Say Clarkson Construction in the Kansas City metropolitan area and the phrase “they need no introduction” comes to mind. Clarkson built Kansas City beginning back in 1880 when an earthmoving machine was a horse-drawn buckboard with a crude blade attachment driven by G.G. (George) Clarkson. dozer purchased is on display in front of Clarkson’s headquarters. The 1937 Cat was purchased by Ed Clarkson, third generation leadership. Over the years and to this day, Cat dozers, scrapers, excavators and motor graders have been part of Clarkson’s fleet. “Value, reliability, a leader in technology...these are the things that come to mind with Cat,” said Greg Shirley, Purchasing Agent for Clarkson. When our equipment is committed to other jobs, we found that a strong rental relationship provides us the chance to take care of the emergencies and capture smaller, short turnaround projects,” said Shirley. “The key is availability. 37,000 Hours and Still Rollin’! Powerline Dairy’s Forget Me Not operation in Dodge City picked up this 924G new in 2002. At their 8,000 head operation, the loader has done standard dairy duty hauling feed and manure over the years. Nothing too remarkable about that, is there? Turns out the machine has around 37,000 hours! This is unheard of, but the story gets even better. The engine hasn’t been overhauled and the only major repairs have been hydraulic system components and a transmission and drivetrain overhaul, turbo and injection pump, common at half these hours. Feed manager Eugene Montoya and maintenance and service technician, Samuel Orozco, have been tending to the loader. Montoya said, “It leaks some hydraulic fluid, but otherwise works great as a backup machine
when another loader is being serviced.” Orozco is in and out of the seat regularly. “This loader still runs great…starts right up every time.” The fact this machine is still serving Powerline speaks volumes about Cat quality, reliability and low cost of ownership.

Ideker Relies on Cat Skid Foley Hosts Invasive Steer’s Security System to Help Tree & Weed Field Day Recover Stolen Equipment Small and compact machines are susceptible to theft because they’re easy to transport and often hold high resale value. Recent construction machine statistics reveal a large problem. About 83% of construction equipment owners are victims of theft and 64% never recover the equipment.* In fact, a stolen machine from Ideker, Inc. in St. Joseph, Missouri, led to a complete overhaul in fleet management strategy. Ideker, Inc., a family-owned construction company, has had two machines stolen in the last 12 months. In 2013, a Cat® 289C Skid Steer Loader was stolen off of a project and was never found. In May 2014, a brand new Cat 272D Skid Steer was taken during off hours. Thanks to the standard Cat security system found in the new D Series Skid Steer Loader, the machine was quickly recovered. The multi-language security display requires a 4, 5 or 6-digit code that’s programmed by the customer before the machine will start. An optional advanced display can hold up to 50 customizable security codes with the ability to retain operator preferences. “We planned to install a remote monitoring system before taking the Cat 272D into the field, but we were confident in the security system it already had,” said Ken Ideker, Vice President of Purchasing and part owner of Ideker, Inc. “We needed the machine right away because we were pressed for time on a project. Once we set up our security code, we pushed forward.” A few days into the project, the truck and trailer holding the machine were stolen from a hotel parking lot near the jobsite. The company immediately contacted police to file a report and reached out to Foley for
additional support. “The machine didn’t even have 20 hours on it before it was stolen,” said Ideker. “Foley quickly provided another machine so we could continue working, and our rep alerted the company’s network, which resulted in a recovered machine before the police report was fully processed. Foley went above and beyond for us.” The offenders broke into the truck that was attached to the equipment trailer and drove to a nearby residential area. Security cameras show the criminals attempting to start the Cat 272D for several hours without success. They eventually abandoned the truck and reattached the trailer to another vehicle before hauling the equipment to a different location. Kevin Bell, Foley sales rep, was searching the area, recognized the stolen equipment and called it in. Since recovering the machine, Ideker, Inc. has made loss prevention a top priority. Plans have been made to install Cat Product Link, a remote monitoring fleet management system, on all six of its mobile machines to improve performance and avoid lost equipment in the future. Using telematics, Product Link tracks equipment location, provides utilization reports and analyzes performance allowing machine owners to maximize efficiency and lower operating costs. “The factory-installed security system kept those guys from taking the machine, which is the main reason why we recovered it,” said Ideker. “We’ve been using Cat products for three generations, and we’ve been working with Foley Equipment for a long time. They provide everything you’d want and need from a dealer, and we plan to continue that partnership.”

Large areas of Kansas would be overrun by cedar trees if allowed. Reclaiming grazing pasture has obvious cash flow benefits to the stockman and so might the waste stream. These and other topics of interest were the focus of a recent Foley Field Day held August 17 southwest of Topeka. About 70 land owners gathered for informational presentations in the morning by the Kansas Forest Service, K-State, K-State Extension Service and Shawnee County Weed Control. The presentations included the history and scope of the problem and mechanical and chemical treatments as part of a “cut and stunt” program. An expert on drones and data modeling provided attendees with insight on how to monetize the expense of the unusable land, as well as new, revenue generating opportunities from the biomass. Foley Compact Construction Equipment sales personnel served a
cookout lunch. Tree removal equipment demonstrations took place in the afternoon and featured Cat Skid Steers running a variety of saws, shears and mulchers. Foley Field Day events are held regularly, so look for one near you.
Dr. Deon van der Merwe from K-State uses drones to map the spread of plant and animal pathologies in agriculture. Drones are also used to map the extent of the invasive tree problem … and opportunity. The biomass of the trees can be estimated for their biofuel energy potential.

A Camel through the Eye of a Needle How do you get a humongous Cat 772G off-highway dump truck into a mine nearly 1,000 feet below ground?
A fully assembled 772G.
The various components are palletized and lowered one at a time down the mine shaft.
The answer is simple (or complicated depending on your point of view!): Disassemble the truck to its component elements — engine, transmission, cooling package, wheels, frame, etc. — and lower them a piece at a time through a 9-by-12-foot mine shaft … and then put it all back together again. That’s what Foley Technicians and Product Support reps did for Audubon Materials at their limestone mine in Sugar Creek, Missouri. Audubon crushes the limestone, dries it and turns it into cement powder. It took about two weeks to disassemble the truck, including cutting the dump body into three pieces that would fit down the mine shaft. Technicians estimate about a week to lower everything underground and another 2-3 weeks to reassemble the truck. The Cat® 772G has a nominal payload capacity of 52 tons and a gross operating weight of 181,000 pounds. It stands nearly 14 feet high, has an operating width of nearly 16
feet and is right at 27 feet long. Absolutely remarkable project for Foley and one that underscores Foley’s vast capabilities.

Tier IV Final Engine Shutdown The new Tier IV Final engines in the newer model Cat® machines and generators have a delayed engine shutdown system. As part of the emission control system, diesel exhaust fluid, DEF, is injected in the exhaust system and must be drained from the system and back into the DEF tank before the engine shuts down. Caterpillar developed an automatic shutdown procedure to accomplish this. When the engine key is turned to the OFF position, the engine continues to run for about 70 seconds while the DEF is purged. This might seem confusing at first, but is part of the normal shutdown process.

Cold Weather Diesel Fuel Tips Save yourself downtime and headaches by taking these simple preventive measures. The easiest way to help minimize cold weather issues is to make sure your fuel system is as dry as possible. All diesel fuel contains water. Water that is dissolved in the diesel fuel will not cause cold weather issues. Free water in a storage tank, vehicle tank or filter will cause problems long before the diesel begins to “gel”. Here are a few things you should do in preparation for before it gets cold. Check your tanks for water regularly. Change vehicle filters now. Change the filters on your storage tanks and stick your tanks with waterfinder paste in October. Remove any free water on the bottom of fuel tanks in October. The most common cause of cold weather issues is filter icing. Consider using a fuel that contains water dispersant year round to help keep your fuel system as dry as possible. Additives & Performance Your fuel supplier can provide additives for year-round solutions to conditions encountered in the Midwest. For example,
an additive that contains water dispersant provides excellent protection against gelling. Ask your supplier if they’re routinely testing their diesel from various sources for best cold weather performance. Fuel they sell to you should be tested with and without additives to measure additive performance. Fuels from different sources react to additives differently. Your supplier should have the data. Cold Filter Plug Points (CFPP) CFPP is the coldest temperatures that fuel molecules will pass through a filter and it is measured. Some fuels will improve CFPP by 20-25 degrees and others will improve very little. Again, this is something your supplier can provide. Most fuel suppliers begin winterizing with additive October 1st, so it’s likely your equipment contains winterized diesel before the first cold snap. Changes in equipment have been made. This means that Caterpillar and other manufacturers have been installing higher micron retention filters on all equipment in order to have cleaner fuel to injector systems. Injector systems have higher pressures in order to reduce stack emissions. These systems do not tolerate water in fuel or gelled fuel. Fuel filters on equipment in the '80s might have been 25 microns. Fuel filters on new equipment can filter to as few as 2 microns.

Foley Industries, in conjunction with Trimble Navigation, recently announced the establishment of SITECH™ Central, a dealership that will sell these technology and productivity solutions to all construction customers operating Cat® and non-Cat equipment in Foley’s territory in Kansas and northwest Missouri.
The Job Bettis Asphalt of Topeka, Kansas was the contractor for this especially demanding project at Topeka Regional Airport, a shared commercial and military airport. Plans called for replacing concrete shoulders with turf and milling and overlaying the remaining 7,000foot long, 150-foot wide runway. Variabledepth milling was required, as airport officials wanted to change both the rideability and profile of the runway. The required tolerances were tight: milling within 2/100 of a foot and then paving within 2/100 of a foot. Bettis knew when bidding that machinecontrolled, 3D milling was an essential first step to reaching those target tolerances. But when work began, it quickly became apparent that the problems couldn’t be solved with milling alone. Some elevations were so far off that the unmilled areas were below the targeted level. Inches of material might have to be removed from one area, and a few feet away the existing surface was already below the specified milling level.

Caterpillar, Trimble and the Cat Dealer community created the SITECH dealer brand to market Trimble technology solutions to the construction industry, regardless of what brand or brands of equipment the contractor is operating.

SITECH™ represents the full line of Trimble construction technology products and also assists the Cat Dealership with Cat Grade Control technology products. Trimble construction products include GPS, laser, sonic and total station products used with all brands of construction machines.

SITECH™ Central is a separate company from Foley Equipment, but operates under the Foley Industries' family of companies.

A Healthy Worksite A healthy worksite should be clean and safe and promote the overall well-being of the employees and visitors. It reduces the exposure to job hazards and communicable diseases that can lead to lost time or restricted duty, increased expenses and lost productivity. Healthy worksites also promote employee morale and reduce employee turnover. Characteristics of a Healthy Worksite • Provide clean bathrooms, wash stations, eating areas and running water: Make sure there are proper toiletries and cleaning supplies available. Hands-free plumbing and waste receptacles are best. • Make the work environment as visual as possible: Eliminate slip, trip and fall hazards. Use signs, colors and shapes to denote locations, aisle ways and means of egress. • Ensure there is good ventilation in work areas proportional to the risk involved with the work. • Establish and adhere to all Personal Protective Equipment requirements. • Ensure blood-borne pathogen training has been provided and response kits are
available. Limit the use of smoking and oral tobacco to designated areas only. • Establish a pre-shift stretching routine to keep muscles loose. • Make sure Material Safety Data Sheets are available and accessible to all employees. • Ensure spill response and fire suppression equipment is available. • Provide Emergency First Responders and have at least one designated for each work area. • Set high cleanliness and housekeeping standards: Do not let dirt and debris accumulate. • Keep waste receptacles from overfilling: Designate the type of waste that should go into each waste receptacle, and establish good recycling procedures. • Implement a comprehensive auditing program that assesses compliance to expectations; most Healthy Worksites have an effective auditing process.
