CUSTOMER PROFILE

TSV Contracting VisionLink® Machinery Monitoring Delivers Value Every Day Tom Van Keirsbilck Contracting started out as a residential developer and home builder in 1992. “I had to shorten the name of the company because it was to much to write and I had to spell it for everyone.”

Van Keirsbilck, (Belgian, pronounced vankeers-bilk), also narrowed the scope of work the company performed as a result of the recession that began in 2008. “In the course of building houses, I did the excavation and grading myself. It wasn’t long before other builders asked me to do their work as well. I purchased a dump truck and got into digging my own basements and building retaining and decorative rock walls,” Van Keirsbilck said.

TSV operates throughout the Kansas City metropolitan area, but is primarily focused in Johnson County, a hot bed of residential development activity in south Kansas City. “We’ve been quite fortunate as far as our growth over the years. I attribute this to our focus and the fact that we’re highly skilled operators with a high level of integrity when it comes to serving our customers. In some respects, we’re an old school operation operating on an old school principle: We do what we say we’ll do and treat people fairly,” Van Keirsbilck explained. The Cat Connection Cat® machines dominate TSV’s fleet and include machines purchased new and used including a 2005 953C track loader, two 2005 963C track loaders and a 320 Cat backhoe with hydraulic hammer. “Cat has always been part of my heavy equipment fleet due to reliability and resale value. I also appreciate the local sales and service from Foley,” Van Keirsbilck continued. The Foley Connection TSV relies on Foley Equipment for all of its service, having made the decision to no longer perform their own service. “Without a fulltime mechanic, we need the expertise that Foley provides. They are familiar with previous maintenance on our machines, so they know what they’re dealing with. I really like dealing with Ronnie Miller, Foley K.C. shop manager. I trust that he fixes only what needs fixing and without fear of overbilling.”

Tom Van Keirsbilck, TSV Contracting, on a pond and dam reconstruction and restoration project.

The Foley connection goes beyond service alone to include remote machine monitoring. TSV has Product Link™ communication hardware on all their machines and monitors the equipment with VisionLink® software. “I have been monitoring our equipment for a while and appreciate the information it provides. It has saved me money in maintenance. Anytime a machine throws a code, Jake (Jake Jenkins, Foley Product Support Sales Rep), gets a notification. That’s one less thing to worry about in day-to-day operations and maintenance,” Van Keirsbilck explained. “Recently, VisionLink saved us money by catching an event code stemming from a drive motor. The proper adjustments were made before we had a catastrophic failure. Catching

the small repairs before they turn into large problems not only saves on repair costs, but also downtime. I also like being able to keep track of location and machine usage to assist in accurate billing,” Van Keirsbilck concluded.

Cat M-Series Small Wheel Loader: Improved Fuel Efficiency, New Options & Operator Features ®

and coolant levels, and lighting to illuminate the fuel area. A new Object Detection System is available that uses radar and provides both visual and audible alarms to warn the operator of objects close to the rear of the machine. The class-leading operator station introduced with K-Series models is further refined to ensure all-day comfort and safety for the operator. Larger external mirrors feature a lower parabolic section that allows visibility to the rear tires at ground level, improving safety when working around trenches and when loading machines on trailers. Operators also can customize M-Series controls by using the new, redesigned secondary display. The secondary display is now larger, providing more customization and information. New features available through the secondary display include coded start and operator profiles, application profiles, service-mode and preventive maintenance alerts, independent flow adjustment for third and fourth hydraulic functions, directionalshift response, ride-control activation speed, automatic-lubrication intervals, bucket- float activation, feather-catch mode, rack snubbing, multiple camera inputs, Perfect Parallelism, diesel exhaust fluid (DEF) level and remaining time until fuel fill.

The new Cat® M-Series Small Wheel Loaders — 926M, 930M and 938M — build on the success of K-Series predecessor models — 924K, 930K and 938K — with engineering refinements that include new engines meeting Tier 4 Final emission standards and new options and features that further enhance value, operator comfort and safety. 926M Replaces 924K With the M-Series introduction, the nomenclature for the smallest model in the family changes from 924 to 926, reflecting the increased capabilities of the new model. All three new models have increased engine power and higher tip loads for improved performance. Efficient Drive Train/Selectable Power Modes A new Cat C7.1 ACERT™ engine powers the three new M-Series wheel loaders and has a clean emissions module designed to require no operator intervention and causing no disruption of work cycles. M-Series models are efficiently powerful and offer hybrid-type fuel savings by using new power modes, selected via the soft touch button panel: Standard mode offers the same power as K-Series models in ranges 1, 2 and 3 and features a Power-By-Range logic that boosts the available power in range 4 for improved roading speed on uphill grades. Testing shows up to 5 percent fuel savings in composite-work cycles and up to 10 percent fuel savings in specific applications, such as roading, long load-and-carry applications and snow clearing. Cat Product Link™ standard The Caterpillar enterprise telematics solution enables customers, dealers and enterprise users to determine the location, operation and condition of connected Cat products. Product Link helps lower owning and operating costs, and the system offers daily operations support and information for business decisions. Through the solution’s

detailed asset management, customers can see fuel status, work time versus idle time and upcoming service needs. Included is a threeyear subscription to the web-based VisionLink® interface for generating summary reports that assist in effective fleet management. New Generation II Loader Linkage The Caterpillar patented, Generation II Optimized Z-bar loader linkage on the M-Series models delivers the performance and breakout forces of a traditional Z-bar linkage with the parallelism and load-handling capability of a tool carrier. The Generation II lift-arm design enhances overall forward visibility, and the redesigned torque tube on standard lift linkages maximizes visibility when the linkage is above the level-arm position. Higher tipping load ratings for the M-Series small wheel loader models also allow the new models to comfortably handle heavier payloads. Operator safety and customization The M-Series small wheel loaders also introduce several new optional features designed to enhance productivity, operator

Operator Tips for Higher Productivity #

1

Anticipate equipment needs Job requirements can differ by a number of factors including project type, location, application and industry. It’s important to outline tasks and identify which machine type, size and configuration is needed before starting any work. Each industry generally has a standard set of equipment that’s required, but sometimes, the same machine can be used across a variety of job tasks for improved productivity. Here are some examples:

Mini But Mighty: Cat® Micro & Mini Excavators The Cat® 300 family of micro and mini excavators provide you with more working advantages, whether you need more digging depth, more power, greater reach, more lift capacity, higher breakout force or more swing torque. The extensive line of Cat® mini hydraulic excavators, models 300.9 – 308, range from 1-10 metric tons and offers the performance to dig in and be productive on every job. These micro and mini excavators, with a net power ranging from 13.0 hp to 65.0 hp and operating weights ranging from 2,061 lbs to 18,519 lbs, are designed to work efficiently and safely in small spaces and on congested job sites. Not to mention the 20+ different Cat attachment configurations that can help you get the job done faster and more efficiently. There is a Cat micro or mini excavator model ready for use and transport to any jobsite – large or small, tight spaces or wide open fields. Take a look at and compare the entire line by contacting your Foley rep or log on to FoleyEQ.com/Mighty300.

front of a bucket. By removing the bucket, and installing a set of forks, construction operators can safely lift a heavier load, improve jobsite visibility and increase machine stability at higher ground speeds. • It’s common for operators to break concrete using the bucket on an excavator or backhoe loader. Adding a hydraulic hammer is much more productive and does less damage to the machine.

Productivity is something that can always be improved upon, so it makes sense that machine owners and operators continue to look for ways to get more from their equipment. We’ve identified three areas in which application practices can be evaluated to improve jobsite strategy, extend equipment lifecycles and increase efficiency.

• Landscaping machines, like compact track loaders or multi terrain loaders, can also be used for snow and ice management. Purchasing a set of snow tracks can greatly improve performance because track-tread patterns meant for soil do not work as well in snow. Additionally, a skid steer loader could probably remove a tree stump, but replacing the bucket with a stump grinder makes quick work of the job, does less damage to the site and minimizes wear and tear on the machine. • In agriculture, some job tasks require moving heavier materials like manure. In this case, select a bucket with less capacity to maintain the proper balance of breakout force, bucket loading time and job site travel speed. • In construction, it’s more efficient to incorporate a quick coupler onto a loader arm than to use forks on the

2

Establish effective operator techniques Sometimes machine operators will find themselves under pressure to finish a job quickly. It’s important to resist the urge to rush, because hurried work can lead to machine damage, dual efforts to fix mistakes and poor record keeping. Up-to-date and accurate records allow machine owners and operators to track progress, which can be used to make adjustments for increased productivity. Additionally, the following loading practices can improve operator efficiency. #

versatility so operators can complete more jobs with fewer machines. Using machines and attachments for multiple purposes or in unique applications can help optimize the equipment even further. Here are some examples: • Augers are used for drilling, but they can also be used to screw specialty bits into concrete or asphalt for manholes and valve access. They can drill anchors for a stronger foundation, such as soil stabilization in hill sides. • Hammers can be equipped with plates, instead of pointed tools, for compacting. Stick-mounted hammers can be used overhead for removing rock faces or for scaling ceilings in caverns and tunnels. • Cold planers are used to profile or texture asphalt and concrete roadways, but they can also remove large numbers of stumps in special applications. In dairy applications, a cold planer mounted to a skid steer loader can texture concrete to keep the cows from slipping and falling in the milk parlors.

• Pay attention to the distance between the machine and the material when loading. Traveling longer distances than needed increases completion time and can accelerate wear on tracks and tires. • Be aware of loading limits. Overloading the machine could have a negative impact on maintenance intervals, lead to downtime or increase equipment wear.

Analyzing application practices can make a big difference in improving jobsite efficiency across the board. The goal is to apply equipment in unique ways that will allow machine owners and operators to get more out of their fleet, reduce wear and tear and increase overall productivity.

3 Ways to Improve Undercarriage Life

Did you know that undercarriage repair and maintenance can be as much as 50 percent of your machine’s maintenance cost over the life of the machine? While undercarriage maintenance is not complicated, track machines, which have much better flotation than wheel machines, can be managed so that the undercarriage life is optimized and owning and operating costs are reduced. Three tips can help you manage wear, maximize track life and minimize repair and maintenance costs:

1

CAREFULLY MATCH THE MACHINE TO JOB CONDITIONS Compact machine selection and configuration play big roles in the life of an undercarriage system. For example, a track machine configured with a narrow shoe in highly abrasive, wet conditions will not provide adequate flotation. This situation will increase the amount of material circulating through the undercarriage system and accelerate wear on all undercarriage components. In this case, a wider track shoe will provide better system wear life. An example for a rubber track machine would be using a Multi Terrain Loader in an application where the

underfoot conditions consist of small aggregate that can get stuck in the undercarriage system, which consists primarily of rubber. In this case, a compact track loader with a steel-embedded rubber track along with steel components would be a better match.

2

CONSIDER OPERATOR TECHNIQUE Practicing good operating techniques will increase undercarriage life. In general, it is best to avoid sharp turns, counter rotations, constant side-slope work and high-speed reverse. All of these greatly increase undercarriage wear and should be avoided whenever possible.

3

CONDUCT DAILY INSPECTIONS Good maintenance practices, along with proper operating techniques, significantly reduce wear and tear on any undercarriage system. Daily machine walk-around inspections are essential for identifying irregularities in machine appearance, possible leaks, loose hardware and improperly tensioned tracks. Proper track tension is critical to all undercarriage styles. In general, tracks that are too tight can accelerate wear and compromise seal integrity; tracks that are too

Beck Winner of National Caterpillar Drawing David Beck of Hopper Farms was the first winner in a national contest sponsored by Caterpillar®. Beck won free fluids and filters for his Cat® machine for one year. “This was quite a surprise,” said Beck. “Like most people, I never win anything.” The free fluids and filters will be used as part of the regular maintenance program for Beck’s 259B Compact Track Loader, which gets regular use around Beck’s 1,500 acre livestock and crop operation near Chillicothe, Missouri.

Presentation of the award took place August 10 at Beck’s farm. On hand for the presentation was Beck’s son, Stephen, in addition to several representatives from Foley.

loose can cause unnecessary wear on track frames. The undercarriage should be cleaned out every day, and even more often when material packing is a factor. Additionally, Foley Equipment can perform a Custom Track Service (CTS) inspection on any Cat track machine. UNDERSTANDING DIESEL EXHAUST FLUID Caterpillar’s response to Tier IV emission control standards includes a number of technologies and systems designed to meet the increasingly stringent requirements. One of those is Diesel Exhaust Fluid (DEF). What is DEF and how does it work? Diesel exhaust fluid is a precisely mixed solution of 32.5% high purity, chemical grade urea and 67.5% de-ionized water. Diesel engines can be run with a lean burn, air-to-fuel ratio to ensure the full combustion of soot and to prevent the exhaust of unburnt fuel. The excess of oxygen leads to the generation of nitrogen oxides (NOx), EPA-recognized and regulated pollutants. Selective catalytic reduction (SCR) is used to reduce the amount of NOx released into the atmosphere by injecting DEF into the exhaust pipeline. The two components of DEF, ammonia and urea, chemically convert the pollutants to harmless water and nitrogen. How much DEF will I need? On Cat products equipped with a SCR system, DEF consumption is approximately 2-3% of fuel consumption, depending on the product and application. The DEF tank has a 1:1 fill rate with the fuel tank. If fuel is added, DEF needs to be added. The DEF fill cap is an industry standard blue and easily identifiable on the product. Are there storage requirements? DEF should be stored in a cool, dry, well-ventilated area. The ideal storage temperature for DEF is between 15ºF and 77ºF (-9ºC and 25ºC). It should not be exposed to direct sunlight for long periods of time as the urea will decompose. Refer to ISO 22241-3 for further information regarding DEF handling, transportation and storage.

Is DEF corrosive? Yes. DEF is corrosive to many different materials; proper dispensing equipment and practices must be utilized. Failure to use DEF specific tooling and fittings will result in corrosion and contamination of the DEF supply. As few as one incorrect fitting could contaminate the DEF supply and may lead to emission system faults and engine shutdown. DEF spills should be cleaned immediately, and machine or engine surfaces should be wiped clean and rinsed with water. As always, refer to the MSDS for specific safety and handling guidelines. Are there recommendations for dispensing? Yes. Automatic dispensing units provide safeguards for DEF dispensing. Every Cat DEF tank is equipped with a magnet in the fill port. The automatic dispensing DEF nozzle has lever protection, if the magnet is not detected, DEF will not be dispensed. This prevents the DEF tank from being overfilled and DEF from being dispensed into the fuel tank, hydraulic oil tank, windshield washer tank, etc. Is contamination a concern? Yes. DEF cleanliness is extremely important as contaminants can degrade the life of DEF and SCR system components. Several points to consider are: • Clean the fill area prior to refilling • Avoid transfer containers when possible • If transfer containers are used, keep the container clean and dedicated for DEF Poor handling practices will contaminate the DEF supply and potentially lead to fault codes and emission system failures. Foley Employees Celebrate 75 Years Summer Events a Good Time for Foley Families

YEARS

Foley employees and their families celebrated Foley’s 75th anniversary at special events in Wichita and Kansas City this summer. To accommodate the nearly 2,000 employees and family members attending from across the Kansas and Missouri territory, the events were held

on separate dates in late June and July at the Sedgwick County Zoo and Kansas City Zoo. Fun included family photos, machine skill games, special zoo animal demos, face painting for the kids, snow cones and a tasty BBQ lunch. Here are a few shots of the fun!
