Simple Technologies
Deliver MORE on CAT® F SERIES EXCAVATORS
Cat® technology simply makes your work faster, more efficient and rewarding. That’s what Cat Connect PAYLOAD, GRADE and LINK technologies deliver on new Cat F Series Excavators. Keep Production On Track Cat ® PAYLOAD allows you to view material weight on the integrated display so you know precisely how much material is in the bucket and when trucks are filled to target payload. Instant feedback gives you confidence to work more effectively, maximizing the potential of the entire fleet. Site managers can wirelessly access data via the VisionLink ® web portal to measure production and monitor efficiency. The system is available on the 336F XE, 349F XE, 374F and 390F. Cut To Grade Precisely An option on all F Series models, Cat GRADE with Depth and Slope also gives operators the in-cab data to work productively. This 2D system provides real-time bucket tip positioning and cut-and-fill information, guiding operators to achieve consistent grades. That leads to fewer passes, less rework and little need for grade staking and checkers — boosting productivity up to 35 percent and reducing fuel costs by 6 percent. For 3D control, upgrading to Cat AccuGradeTM is easy. 4 | FOLEYfocus | Summer 2016
General Construction & Technology
Get To Grade Quickly For even faster, more accurate grading, there’s Cat ® GRADE with Assist. This simple-to-use technology lets you set your targets, push Auto, and then watch the boom and bucket automatically adjust as you pull back on the stick to get the most perfect grade. Cat GRADE with Assist cuts grading time by as much as 45 percent — and fuel use by 25 percent — compared to traditional techniques. And because it’s a 2D system, there’s no need for GPS. Take 3D Control For more complex jobsites, Cat AccuGrade can help get you to grade more quickly and accurately. It uses GPS technology and a dedicated monitor to provide 3D bucket tip positioning and elevation guidance so you can make challenging cuts and contours; it also eliminates the need for staking and checking. All F Series models are Cat AccuGrade ready for dealer installation. Get To Grade Quickly All Cat Excavators come standard with Cat Connect LINK technologies. Product Link™ monitors and collects information about machine location, hours, fuel use and more. VisionLink ® is the webbased interface that allows wireless access to that data from any device, anytime. Technology on Cat Excavators produce more accuracy and more profit for you. KEVIN HOLLON EXCAVATING
Owner/Operator
A Cat® 953D excavates a basement foundation in Westwood, a residential development in Kearney, MO. Line of Business Residential foundation contractor – 23 years in business as an owner/operator Running These Cat Machines Track Type Loaders – Mixed age and model fleet Services Provided › Product Support rep › CTS (Custom Track Service) - regular undercarriage inspections › Regular overall machine inspections › Component rebuilds The Bottom Line Kevin Hollon is in touch with his machines daily. Hollan not only manages the business, he’s running equipment. Hollon has been running Cat ® since 1993 and sees the value in running Cat across his fleet of Track Type Loaders. Hollon’s hands-on approach includes a maintenance crew for routine service and repairs. If the repair job goes beyond their time or ability to handle, Hollon turns to Foley Product Support rep, Jason Duxbury, for advice about how best to move forward in the most cost-effective manner. Hollon utilizes Foley Custom Track Service, (CTS), to regularly evaluate the undercarriage on higher hour machines. This serves Hollon two ways. The first is to offer a line of site on what needs immediate attention and what can wait. Second, CTS allows Hollon to budget the time and expense in advance to minimize any unexpected downtime due to unexpected undercarriage failures. Foley is able to suggest maintenance strategies based on the lifecycle of the entire fleet of Cat Track Loaders. Managing equipment and maintenance across the fleet delivers a balanced approach to equipment investment for Kevin Hollon Excavating. “If a machine goes down, Foley is there promptly working the problem…a day-to-day partner. Life cycle maintenance means they’re keeping my long-term and bottom-line interests in mind.” – Kevin Hollon Owner, Kevin Hollon Excavating

ALAN’S EXCAVATING
General Contractor
A Cat 160M AWD spreads a rock bed for a rural property driveway. Line of Business General contractors – 37 years in business. Running These Cat Machines Scrapers, Dozers, Medium Excavators, Backhoe Loaders, Med Wheel Loaders, Articulated Trucks, Motor Graders and, just recently, 2 new Compact Track Loaders Services Provided › Product Support Rep › Life cycle fleet maintenance › Component rebuilds › Parts Drop box › Truck Service “Foley makes it easy for us to do business. They give us good advice and deliver on their promises. That’s the essence of a partner that gives 100%.” – Jake & Nick McClure President & VP, Alan’s Excavating The Bottom Line Alan’s Excavating runs many different Cat machines which is indicative of their broad capabilities, handling projects as diverse as a Walmart Supercenter to a small pond excavation for a local farmer. As with many family businesses, Alan’s takes a hands-on approach to the day-to-day management and operations, including regular decisions on maintenance, repairs and long term fleet management. Alan’s has some internal maintenance capabilities, but when there’s dirt to be moved on a project, their crews are generating revenue by running equipment instead of servicing it. That’s where Foley’s Product Support team steps in to assess and recommend solutions. You’ll find Foley offering technical advice and helping sort through maintenance issues in Alan’s shop, Foley’s shop or in the field. Foley’s involvement with fleet management starts with assistance on machine purchase decisions, whether new or used. Alan’s broad fleet of equipment is matched by Foley’s broad range of maintenance solutions. This includes OEM parts delivered to a nearby Drop Box, Cat and competitive hydraulic component rebuilds and undercarriage inspections. Foley Truck Service performs engine overhauls for haul trucks that pull double-duty hauling machines or freshly harvested wheat or corn from a sizable crop and livestock operation. A Cat AP1055E puts down the overlay in the Stoneycreek residential development in Greenwood, MO. Line of Business Asphalt paving contractor – 60 years in business. Running These Cat Machines Large fleet of varying ages & models – Pavers and Compactors, Wheel Loaders, Skid Steers Services Provided › Paving Specialist & Product Support rep › Recent Certified Power Train (CPT) rebuild on ’03 - 980G › Paver - Annual Rebuilds › Parts analysis & procurement program › Training – OSHA, machine safety & operation “Not laying asphalt means we’re not making money. Not an option. Jason’s availability and experience gives me the trust and confidence that the quickest, most reasonable solution will be presented to keep us running.” – Jeremy Byl Equipment Manager, Superior Bowen The Bottom Line Paving is a specialized business. The depth of the relationship with Superior Bowen is evident in the focused expertise and services Foley provides and it starts with Foley Product Support rep, Jason Duxbury, who is focused on maximizing the uptime of the Superior Bowen’s fleet.
Services Provided › Life cycle fleet maintenance › Certified Power Train Rebuilds › Component rebuilds › Parts Drop box The Bottom Line Foley helps Savage serve their refinery customers in Coffeyville and El Dorado, Kansas. While Savage runs and Foley services a broad family of machines, the majority are Wheel Loaders used to handle petroleum coke, a refining byproduct. Foley’s working relationship with Savage varies from the El Dorado and Coffeyville plants based on the individual needs of each facility. Foley’s relationship with Savage began with the acquisition of new machines and repairing machines as needed. While Foley continues to contribute on both new and used sales, it is driven by the bigger picture of life cycle fleet management, extending the productive life of each machine and the entire fleet. In El Dorado, Savage team members work hand-in-hand with Foley Product Support and Parts representatives on many day-to-day issues, including performing preventive maintenance, pulling fluid samples for testing and offering repair options that meet equipment and budgetary requirements on large and small repairs. Foley deployed an Equipment Management Solutions program for Savage’s CAT equipment at the Coffeyville refinery to monitor machine utilization and operating status remotely. Foley performs routine maintenance and inspections in accordance with Foley Maintenance Plans. Repair options include Certified Power Train (CPT) and component rebuilds. Foley has done CPTs on five machines for Savage. CPT rehabilitation offers like-new performance, restoring the power train to original Cat specifications and performance, and includes a new warranty.
At the startup of the new season, Randy Jordan, (Paving Specialist – Topeka), is present to make certain everything goes smoothly and can be counted on when the “road gets rough” and Superior Bowen is looking for specialized technical support as the season progresses. Foley coordinates an annual, off-season Paver Rebuild program to optimize uptime and parts costs. Foley also worked with Superior Bowen to analyze and compare non-Cat ® parts purchases. This lead to the eventual replacement of a parts inventory purchasing system managed by a national retail chain. Foley replaced this with a process that delivers Cat ® quality parts and allows Superior Bowen to take advantage of money-saving discounts available through Foley and Caterpillar. 8 | FOLEYfocus | Summer 2016
“Foley takes both a short and long-term view of our equipment maintenance. They counsel with us on day-to-day, routine decisions and help us plan for anticipated maintenance as part of annual budgetary planning. I trust Foley for maintenance advice whether it’s Cat or a competitor.” – Tim Englett Regional Maintenance Manager, Savage Services

Watch the INDICATORS Maintain Competitive Edge With Hydraulic System Diagnostics It’s easy to overlook the hydraulic system when completing machine walkarounds, as it’s not always visible from checkpoint areas. That doesn’t mean it’s any less important. A machine’s hydraulic system determines how much material you move and how fast you move it. As your dealer, we can help you detect system issues earlier by providing simple diagnostic tests and acceptable specifications. The hydraulic system is comprised of pumps, motors, hoses, cylinders, and hydraulic fluid. Depending on the operating environment and maintenance practices, components may show signs of wear as early as 2,500 hours. We recommend that the operator consider factors that may indicate issues with the hydraulic system, such as: › Cylinder drift (unactuated cylinder movement) › Tracking (experiencing tracking pull one way or another while in forward motion) 10 | FOLEYfocus | Summer 2016
› › › ›
Inconsistent swinging motion with the equipment (jittery movement) System noise (pump or relief valve squealing) Increased system heat (above 190° F) External cylinder, hose, pump, or motor leakage
Your competitive advantage depends on your machine’s ability to maintain productivity and your operator’s proficiency in recognizing when to service something before it fails. Preserving your hydraulic system by acting on the indicators listed above can help you avoid costly repairs and reduce downtime. Foley can help you perform simple machine operation tests to gauge if it’s time to service the hydraulic system before repair costs increase. For more information about maintaining or assessing your hydraulic system, please contact us.

When it comes to truck engine overhauls, we’ve seen a number of customers go the distance … as far as 1,000 miles away … to have a Foley Truck Shop handle their overhauls. In fact, over 1,100 in-frame overhauls of Cat engines have been completed at Foley shop across our territory over the last 5 years. Two out of every three Cat engines in our territory that were due an overhaul* were done at Foley. Now that’s a trusting relationship! *
