FOLGER CONSORT

Engaging Washington-area audiences since 1977, Folger Consort is the early music ensemble-in-residence at the Folger Shakespeare Library.

Founding Artistic Directors Robert Eisenstein and Christopher Kendall create programs that offer opportunities to discover and enjoy music from the Medieval, Renaissance, and Baroque periods. Whether presenting concerts in the ensemble’s intimate home, the Folger’s Elizabethan-styled theater, or in the splendid reaches of Washington National Cathedral, the Folger Consort continues its tradition of bringing internationally noted guest artists to Washington, DC to join in its “early music chamber society.” Beyond its concert series, Folger Consort strives to deepen audiences’ understanding and appreciation of early music through seminars, discussions, recordings, radio programs, and unique collaborations with other programs of the Folger Shakespeare Library. Folger Consort has received five awards for Best Classical Chamber Ensemble by the Washington Area Music Awards.

Robert Eisenstein—medieval fiddle, recorder—is a founding member and program director of the Folger Consort. In addition to his work with the Consort, he is the director of the Five College Early Music Program in Massachusetts, where he teaches music history, performs regularly on viola da gamba, violin, and medieval fiddle, and coordinates and directs student performances of Medieval, Renaissance, and Baroque music. He is an active participant in Five College Medieval Studies and served as Music Director for the Five College Opera Project production of Francesca Caccini’s La Liberazione di Ruggiero. He has a particular interest in the use of computer technology in the service of music and enjoys teaching a course called Fun with Music and Technology at Mount Holyoke College. Mr. Eisenstein is the recipient of Early Music America's Thomas Binkley Award for outstanding achievement in performance and scholarship by the director of a college early music ensemble.

Christopher Kendall—lute, citole—is founder of the Folger Consort. He served from 2005-2015 as dean of the University of Michigan School of Music, Theatre & Dance, where he was responsible for establishing the University of Michigan Gershwin Initiative, for re-instituting international touring, for the funding and design of a $30M expansion/renovation of the music building, and for launching the interdisciplinary enterprise ArtsEngine and its national initiative a2ru (Alliance for the Arts at Research Universities). In Washington, DC, in addition to his work with Folger Consort, since 1975 he has been Artistic Director and conductor of the 21st Century Consort, new music ensemble-in-residence at the Smithsonian Institution. Mr. Kendall 4

served as Director of the University of Maryland School of Music from 1996 to 2005, and was Director of the Music Division and Tanglewood Institute of the Boston University School for the Arts from 1993 to 1996. Associate Conductor of the Seattle Symphony from 1987 to 1992, Mr. Kendall has guest conducted many orchestras and ensembles in repertoire from the 18th to the 21st centuries. His recordings can be heard on the Arabesque, ASV, Bard, Centaur, Delos, Innova, Nonesuch, and Smithsonian Collection labels.

Daniel Meyers—recorder, flute, slide trumpet, trombone, percussion—has a reputation as an engaging performer of both classical and folk music. His credits range from premieres of avant-garde chamber music, to headlining a concert series in honor of Pete Seeger at the Newport Folk Festival, to playing Renaissance instruments as part of the “band” for Shakepeare’s Globe on Broadway. He is a founding member of the Boston-based classical/folk crossover group Seven Times Salt, and in recent seasons he has been a guest artist with the Newberry Consort, the Boston Shawm and Sackbut Ensemble, Early Music New York, La Follia Baroque, and the Cambridge Revels. He is the director of early wind studies for the Five Colleges Early Music Program and has taught recorder and Renaissance winds for the Early Music Week at Pinewoods and at Tufts University. He also performs southern Italian folk music with the award-winning band Newpoli and traditional Irish music with the trio Ulster Landing.

Mary Springfels—medieval fiddle, citole—is the founder and former director of the Newberry Consort. A veteran of the early music movement in America, she has performed and recorded extensively with such ensembles as the New York Pro Musica, the Waverly Consort, Concert Royal, Sequentia, Philharmonia Baroque Orchestra, the Seattle Baroque Orchestra, Music of

the Baroque, Musica Sacra, the Marlborough Festival, the New York City Opera, and Chicago Opera Theater, where she served as an artistic advisor.

She is much in demand as a teacher and player in summer festivals throughout the US, among them the San Francisco and Amherst early music festivals, the Conclave of the Viola da Gamba Society of America, the Pinewoods Early Music Week, and the Texas Toot. She has recently performed with the Sonoma Bach Festival, the Arizona Bach Festival, the Dallas Bach Festival, and Ars Lyrica of Houston.

The Orlando Consort Formed in 1988 by the Early Music Network of Great Britain, the Orlando Consort rapidly achieved a reputation as one of Europe’s most expert groups performing repertoire from the years 1050 to 1550. Their work successfully combines captivating entertainment and fresh scholarly insight; the unique imagination and originality of their programming together with their superb vocal skills have marked them out as outstanding leaders of their field. The Orlando Consort has performed at many of Britain’s top festivals (including the BBC Proms and the Edinburgh International Festival) and has in recent years made visits to France, Holland, Belgium, Germany, Italy, Sweden, Poland, the Czech Republic, Estonia, the US and Canada, South America, Singapore, Japan, Greece, Russia, Austria, Switzerland, Slovenia, Portugal, and Spain.

The Orlando Consort’s impressive discography includes a collection of music by John Dunstaple and The Call of the Phoenix, which were selected as Early Music CDs of the Year by Gramophone Magazine; their CDs of music by Compère, Machaut, Ockeghem, Josquin, Popes and Anti-Popes, Saracen and Dove, and Passion have also all been shortlisted. Their recording of Machaut’s Messe de Notre Dame and Scattered Rhymes, an outstanding new work by the young British composer Tarik O’Regan and featuring the Estonian Philharmonic Chamber Choir, were shortlisted for a BBC Music Magazine Award. Dart of Love is their second recording in a series for Hyperion exploring the polyphonic songs of Guillaume de Machaut; the first release, Le Voir Dit, was selected by New York Times critics as one of their favorite classical CDs of 2013. Their most recent releases are a second anthology of music by Loyset Compère—shortlisted for a Gramophone Magazine Early Music Award—and volume three of the Machaut series, A Burning Heart.

The Orlando Consort’s performances also embrace the spheres of contemporary music and improvisation: to date they have performed over 30 world premieres, and they have created striking collaborations with the jazz group Perfect Houseplants and, for a project exploring historic Portuguese and Goan music, the brilliant tabla player Kuljit Bhamra. The Consort currently holds a residency at Nottingham University, and recent concert highlights include a return visit to New York’s Carnegie Hall. The group is currently touring with a grand new project that presents Carl Theodor Dreyer’s silent masterpiece, La Passion de Jeanne d’Arc, with a live soundtrack of music from the early 15th century. Performances take place all over the UK, Europe, and the US throughout 2016/17. Future plans include several appearances in North America, Italy, Germany, Spain, France, Portugal, Poland, and the UK. The Orlando Consort is particularly delighted to be beginning 2017 with the Folger Consort in a meeting of musical minds across the Atlantic Ocean.

NOTES

Our most important source of late 14th- and early 15th-century English music is a large collection, containing almost 150 pieces, known today as the Old Hall Manuscript.

It fortunately survived the Reformation destruction of most other sources of late medieval English music, and so it provides our most important evidence for the existence and development of specifically English traits during a period in which English music and musicians had a profound influence on Continental music. The manuscript belonged to St. Edmund’s College, an 18th-century Catholic school in the village of Old Hall Green in Hertfordshire, from which it acquired its name, and is now owned by the British Library. Settings of the Ordinary of the Mass predominate, but the manuscript also contains motets of several different types. Over a number of years, several scribes successively contributed pieces to the manuscript, so there are chronological layers of content in the source. The music was composed between 1350 and 1420, and the wide range of styles represented gives us a vivid sense of the evolution of English music during this period. For our program this evening, we have chosen to focus on pieces included in the Old Hall Manuscript, but we will supplement its contents with a few instrumental works from other sources and a couple of early 15th-century carols.

Although we know very little about most of the composers named in the Old Hall, we do know that Pycard was “principal singing man” in the service of John of Gaunt. Pycard is well represented in our program by a number of delightfully complex and canonic mass movements, like the Gloria with which we begin this evening. He often enriches his music by splitting parts into two, and thus we can consider him as the originator of divisi writing.

We continue with an instrumental piece, most likely for organ. We have “orchestrated” it here for a few of the soft or bas chamber instruments of the time which include plucked and bowed strings, end-blown and transverse flutes, organetto, and harp.

We continue with another Gloria, this one by Gervayse. It is a more straightforward setting than that of Pycard, in the style we call cantilena. The top part definitely predominates and together with a tenor forms the main structure of the piece. A third part, the contratenor, fills in harmonies and provides more rhythmic interest between the tune and tenor. Mayshuet’s Are post libamina, which ends this group, is an interesting work. Mayshuet, as he is named in the Old Hall, is actually the French composer Matheus de Sancte Johanne, who died around 1391. He was in England by 1366 in the service of the nobility, including Phillipa of Hainault, the queen, but returned to France in 1368. He was a chaplain in the papal chapel in Avignon from 1382 to 1387, and indeed his few secular songs exhibit the same notational and rhythmic complexities of Solage and other composers of the papal court that we now associate with the ars subtilior style. Are post libamina is composed with five parts, although two of them seem to be alternatives and not meant to be sung together. The text denounces various musical excesses, while the music goes ahead and uses most of the devices the author complains about!

The Credo by Leonel Power (d. 1445) is another piece that is related to the highly mannered and complex music of the French ars subtilior. In this case, it is not simply the rhythmic complexity of the style that stands out, although 7

that is indeed present, but also the chromaticism. In music of this period, performers often had to adjust certain pitches in order to make smoother cadences and avoid the forbidden interval of the tritone. Certain compositions seem to purposely paint the singers into a tonal corner and force them to choose between some strange sounding alternatives. That is certainly true of this piece.

The two instrumental pieces in this group are from an early 14th-century manuscript known as the Robertsbridge Codex and are written out, like Flos vernalis, in a sort of organ tablature. In form they are estampies, the only instrumental form we know about from this period. In these medieval dances, a small bit of music is played with a first ending, then repeated with a second more final one, before going on to a succession of new bits, each of which has the same two endings. In the case of these examples, like the one source we have of Italian dances from the 14th century, the content of the individual melodic bits (officially called puncti) can be added on to earlier material, and so the forms can become quite intricate and almost hypnotic. These Italianate estampies work very well for instrumental ensembles.

We know nothing about Richard Chirbury, a composer represented by four pieces in the Old Hall. The Agnus Dei is an old-fashioned piece for the time, with all three voices moving in the same rhythms. This discant style seems to be derived from 13th-century conductus. Chirbury’s pieces are from the original, earliest layer of compositions in the manuscript. We complete the first part of our program with an anonymous Credo which is incompletely preserved in Old Hall, yet fortunately also included in a source associated with Fountains Abbey. This delightfully engaging work is a wonderful example of 14th-century artifice. There is an introitus, or introductory section, which is a canon for the two highest voices. The main body of the piece is isorhythmic—in other words, overlapping rhythmic and melodic patterns in the tenor determine the structure of the composition. The tenor is derived from six notes, and there is a rubric, or inscription in the source, which instructs the singer to perform those six notes forward, then backward, then forward again. Then the entire pattern is repeated twice as quickly. We are not really expected to hear these mathematical subtleties, although the singers themselves no doubt appreciate them. However, they are a reflection of the music of the spheres, and as such glorify God and the wonder of his universe.

After intermission we continue with music directly associated with Henry V. The attribution of the rather simple Sanctus in Old Hall to “Roy Henry” probably refers to the king himself. While we know nothing about Bittering, his En Katerina solennia is an isorhythmic motet composed over a chant sung on St. Katherine’s feast day. It seems probable that the piece was composed for the celebration of Henry’s marriage to Catherine de Valois in 1420. We have mention of the composer Damett (c.1390 – c.1436) in royal household accounts of the campaign against the French, and his motet Salvatoris mater pia bears this out. The highest voice is a Marian prayer, with interpolated hopes for her intercession on behalf of the king, and the middle voice calls on Saint George to protect the English people. We conclude our royal set with the famous anonymous Agincourt Carol, which relates the story of the Battle of Agincourt in 1415, probably best known today from the account in Shakespeare’s Henry V. 8

With Anna mater matris Christi, we come to the latest layer of works in Old Hall and a younger composer. John Plummer (c. 1410? – c. 1484) sang in Henry VI’s Chapel Royal. This large scale motet exhibits Plummer’s facility for imitation and is more modern than the pieces we have heard so far.

With our last group of pieces, we arrive at the fresh new style that took the Continent by storm in the 1420s and 30s. John Dunstaple (c. 1390 –1453) is the most important English composer of his time and the most famous proponent of this new style (although there were other practitioners, like Forest, whose name appears with no forename). In fact, we know more about Dunstaple than any other composer in the Old Hall Manuscript. In 1477 the theorist Johannes Tinctoris singled out Dunstaple along with Binchois and Du Fay as the originators of a new style. According to a Burgundian writing in 1441, these composers wore “la countenance angloise.” They made lively consonances and, following Dunstaple, made their music “joyeux et notable.” To our ears, Dunstaple’s music certainly sounds different from what came before. It is sweeter and fuller than Continental music of the period, with few dissonances and the sound of the full triad predominating. As Tinctoris correctly noted, it is with Dunstaple and his followers that this style originated, a kind of music that was to prevail, with further evolution, for almost 200 years. Dunstaple’s primary employment was as a singer in the Duke of Bedford’s chapel, although he was said to be a mathematician and astronomer as well. He probably spent many years on the Continent while his lord was Regent of Paris and governor of Normandy, so he was more able to affect Continental musicians than other composers. We now know that Dunstaple had previously been in the service of the widow of Henry IV, and after the death of Henry V in 1422, was employed by Humphrey, Duke of Gloucester. The composer was connected to St. Albans Abbey as well, and after his death the Abbot composed an epitaph: He is enclosed in this tomb who enclosed heaven in his breast, John Dunstaple, who had secret knowledge of the stars…. This man was your glory, your light, your prince, O Music; and one who has scattered your sweet arts throughout the world.

Dunstaple’s Descendi in ortum meum is a lovely setting of a text from the Song of Songs, as is his better known Quam pulchraes. His grand and sonorous Veni sancte spiritus/Veni creator spiritus was performed in 1416 as part of the ceremonies at Canterbury Cathedral celebrating the victory at Agincourt. Henry V and the Emperor Sigismund were in attendance. It is one of Dunstaple’s most famous and beautiful motets. Although it is an isorhythmic motet and structurally very much in the world of the 14th century, the full harmonies make it seem fresh and different indeed.

A distinguished Gallic practitioner harmonized this song on Gallic melodies, but afterwards he recast it in the Latin language; it becomes agreeable to the English rather often, rendering thanks to God.
