FROM THE DIRECTOR I was thrilled by the invitation to

direct Love’s Labor’s Lost here at the Folger. I have loved the play ever since I performed in a production of it in 1995, where I was transported by the ambition of its linguistic gymnastics, the big-heartedness of Shakespeare’s emerging worldview, the play’s charm, and all its endearing imperfections. Over twenty years later, I am still moved by all these elements, and I have loved reencountering the play from a director’s point of view, with a significantly more mature understanding of what love has to teach us.

When Artistic Producer Janet Griffin gave me a tour of the Folger, she walked me into the Paster Reading Room, and it took about three minutes before I turned to her and said, “Well, this is our Navarre!” A place of great reverence for learning, particularly dedicated to the use of Shakespeare as a “living art,” the Folger celebrates one of history’s greatest teachers of the human condition and his unparalleled use of language to understand that condition. As I began my research, I learned that the Folger had opened its

doors in 1932, and another “aha” moment occurred: the opportunity to set our production in the era of the Depression—a disconsolate period that begged for buoyancy, that was rife with the desire for both political and personal betterment (the New Deal was imminent), that was poised for women’s individuation, and which generated a popular culture that delighted in verbal repartee. This need to be transported out of our present situation, to escape from a tumultuous, seemingly hopeless social climate, is all too familiar to us today.

And so we travel now together to a gentler, more antic version of spring in DC . . . Enjoy!

FROM THE DRAMATURG Because Love’s Labor’s Lost is one of Shakespeare’s early (some say very early) plays, there are those who might excuse, or worse, dismiss it. But that loss would be even more unfortunate than the loss announced in the play’s title. Critical attention to Love’s Labor’s Lost frequently emphasizes the play’s anticipation of later and, presumably, more beloved comedies such as Much Ado About Nothing or As You Like It. But this earlier work, generally dated between 1594-96, is shot through with surprising singularity. Like the swanky men of Navarre who open the action, the playtext seems keen to flex its literary muscle and “buy that honor which shall…make [it heir] of all eternity.”

Shakespeare rhymes more verses in this play than in any other—so much so that unrhymed text was flagged for significance by this poetically savvy cast. In Love’s Labor’s, the playwright outdoes himself in mocking literary trends: Petrarchan conventions and courtly matter are among those hardest hit. Compelling, too, is the way Love’s Labor’s subverts expectations of comedy without venturing into the murky discomfort of the later “problem plays.” There is no problem in Navarre that may not be solved by a quick turn of phrase or the swift foot of time. The play’s loving laborers are steeped in optimism and boyish aplomb. Wit fuels every action. If there is a touch 6

of the unseasoned in this work, it comes from the play’s confusion of linguistic ingenuity for bona fide affection.

Language is as much the matter of Love’s Labor’s as love itself. As William C. Carroll writes in the essay excerpted in this program, “the pun…is the linguistic DNA” of this work. The King and his lords dazzle with clever wordplay, twisting one another’s meaning at dizzying speed like a lexical ball spun on one finger. These rhetorical giants are too clever by half. Throughout the play, across class and gender, language is everyone’s playground. All recognize the pleasures to be had in using, coining, riffing, commanding, or lampooning others’ words. It is the simple Costard, rather than the aspiring scholars or their tutor, who uses the longest word found in all of Shakespeare: honorificabilitudinitatibus, from medieval Latin meaning “the state of being able to achieve honor.” Costard uses it in conversation with a mere boy, confirming their mutual access to honor. Language is evermore the great equalizer. Small wonder then that such a play should be presented within these Folger walls. Director Vivienne Benesch’s inspired choice to recreate the Folger’s Paster Reading Room on stage winks an approval of

both the enterprise to which the would-be scholars vow their service and tenderness of feeling that distracts them from it. In Collecting Shakespeare, Stephen H. Grant describes the story of Henry and Emily Folger as “a double love story,” one romantic, the other literary.

Setting this production in the early 1930s (the Library opened in 1932), complements the Folgers’ passion for Shakespeare as a source of faith and hope. In Love’s Labor’s, Navarre’s King makes clear his aim to cultivate “a little academe/Still and contemplative in living art.” Though the early ‘30s saw America in the devastation of the Great Depression, the period gave rise to all manner of “living art.” During that time, the Public Works of Art Project and the more expansive Federal Art Project commissioned work from more than 10,000 artists charged with integrating art into Americans’ daily lives. Many artists taught in educational art centers, also sponsored by the FAP. Art was an essential source, in those hard times, of relief, community and learning. The young men in this play are neither still nor contemplative long enough to find this out, distracted by the arrival of the whip-smart French Princess and her lively companions. Berowne justifies the exchange of rare books for rarer beauty, insisting that “women’s eyes” provide whatever education

men need: “They are…the books, the arts, the academes,/That show, contain and nourish all the world.” It’s a stunning sentiment, and true enough if those ladies’ eyes are kept busy in a library, especially one devoted to turning old texts into living art, inside its walls and beyond them. –Michele Osherow

SYNOPSIS

In Love’s Labor’s Lost, the comedy centers on four young men who fall in love against their wills. The men, one of them the King of Navarre, pledge to study for three years, avoiding all contact with women. When the Princess of France arrives on a state visit, the King insists that she and her ladies camp outside the court. Even so, each young man falls in love with one of the ladies. Meanwhile, Don Armado, a Spanish soldier, falls for a servant girl, Jaquenetta. Costard mixes up two letters he is to deliver, one from Armado to Jaquenetta and the other from Berowne, one of the King’s companions, to Rosaline, one of the French ladies.

The men confess to each other that they are in love and devise a pageant for the ladies, who set a trap for them by exchanging their identifying markers. When word comes that the Princess’s father is dead, the ladies reject the men’s proposals as rash and impose a year’s delay before any further wooing. –Folger Digital Texts

Folger Theatre

Folger Shakespeare Library, opened in 1932, featured the first replica in North America of an Elizabethan theater, a 250-seat space designed to suggest the innyard playing spaces. Founders Henry Clay and Emily Jordan Folger envisioned it as a place for the performance of the plays in Shakespeare’s style, and the first nationally televised broadcast of a Shakespeare play in the US was Julius Caesar from the Folger stage in 1949. Folger Theatre produces seasons of Shakespeare, other plays from the period of the Folger’s rare collection, and new work, including commissions, inspired by the period, with award-winning stagings of more than 70 percent of Shakespeare’s canon, as well as classical and Restoration work. Folger Theatre has collaborated with the Classical Theatre of Harlem, the Oregon Shakespeare Festival, the Guthrie, Hudson Valley Shakespeare Festival, and other theaters across the country. Folger Theatre is the recipient of 30 Helen Hayes Awards including four for Outstanding Resident Production for Sense and Sensibility, The Taming of the Shrew, Hamlet, and Measure for Measure.

Janet Alexander Griffin

Artistic Producer As Director of Public Programs, Griffin has established Folger Theatre as a home for creative, contemporary approaches to classic theater. She has produced more than 25 seasons of theater, including the majority of Shakespeare plays, as well as the work of many other playwrights; more than 800 concerts of early music; and a like number of other cultural events. Her leadership of Folger Theatre has seen the theater recognized with 148 nominations and 30 awards for excellence from Washington’s Helen Hayes

Awards. These include four awards for Outstanding Resident Production, most recently received for Sense and Sensibility in 2017. Bard Records, created by Griffin, has released 23 titles of music by Folger Consort and others, and Folger Theatre has seven fully dramatized Shakespeare audio books available through Simon and Schuster. Projects commissioned or developed include Lynn Redgrave’s Shakespeare for My Father and Rachel and Juliet; The Fairy Queen and other presentations of Baroque music and Shakespeare with Derek Jacobi, Richard Clifford, and other celebrated artists; Roger Rees’ What You Will; The Second Shepherds’ Play adapted by Mary Hall Surface; Aaron Posner’s District Merchants; Caroline Shaw’s The Tempest; The Gravedigger’s Tale with Louis Butelli; and Confection with Third Rail Projects. She was the first to bring to Washington a Shakespeare’s Globe production and to take Folger programming to London’s Wanamaker Playhouse at the Globe, as well as other venues in Washington, New York, and California. Other Folger programs stewarded by Griffin are the O.B. Hardison Poetry series, celebrating its 50th season; screenings from the Royal Shakespeare Company; and lectures and readings by theater professionals, early modern scholars, and contemporary literary figures.

Building on the legacy of Henry and Emily Folger, the Folger Shakespeare Library will construct a new pavilion to share our peerless collection with 21st-century audiences. New engaging galleries and inviting public spaces will make our exhibitions more accessible and expand our reach. The Wonder of Will campaign will raise $50 million to support this effort as well as the many programs that bring Shakespeare and his world to life.

The reimagined west garden and accessible entry plaza to the Folger Shakespeare Library. Rendering by KieranTimberlake, architects.

For more information about The Wonder of Will, please visit www.folger.edu/wow or contact the Advancement Office at 202.548.0303.
