FROM THE PLAYWRIGHT & DIRECTOR First and foremost, The Way of the World is a funny play. Originally written in 1700, Congreve’s comedy satirizes the elite’s idle lifestyle and cynical approach to love, marriage, and sex. When I thought about adapting it for a contemporary audience, I was immediately hooked by the impulsive spirit and joyful abandon in the plot. Congreve’s critique of the hyper-wealthy and his premise that love and sex can be commoditized are something I saw reflected in our popular culture. There is so much backbiting in the original script that, when I first started working on this adaptation, it almost seemed too mean for a modern audience. However, our world changed with the 2016 election. Mean became commonplace, even fashionable. A play from over 300 years ago suddenly felt powerfully of this moment. Through the relationship of our young lovers, Mae and Henry, the play asks whether love is possible in a world that has so utterly ridiculed affection. Heiress to a huge fortune, Mae is searching for meaning, but she is compromised by her place in the world. Henry is at first attracted to Mae’s money, but then he finds himself actually falling for her—and no one’s more surprised than he. In such a jaded world as ours, is it possible for true love to exist? That universal question leads to unlimited comic scenarios. Performing in the shadow of the US Capitol has heightened the play's immediacy for me. When the Waitress talks about working six jobs
just to make ends meet, I can’t help but think of all the people I know in similar situations. The lavish lifestyle of the 1% is a foreign world to most of us. The wealth gap in America is becoming so wide that we are losing sight of how to relate to each other in meaningful ways. We have replaced sincere human connection with the cattiness of social media and reality TV. Through satirizing the idle rich, The Way of the World explores the nastiness and shallowness permeating modern society. The Restoration ushered in a new era of women on stage, so it seems fitting to bring this play to DC during the Women’s Voices Theater Festival. This version of The Way of the World is powerfully different from Congreve’s, not only because it’s adapted to a modern audience but also because as a female writer, my adaptation carries an inherent female perspective that empowers Congreve’s Lady Wishfort (our Rene) and endows our heiress (Mae) with a more complex spiritual life. It is a story that simultaneously embraces Folger Theatre’s impeccable classic credentials and also belongs in the contemporary female context. FROM THE DRAMATURG The English Civil Wars cost England eighteen years of theater. Puritan values held that immorality was the story told on every stage and a 1642 act of Parliament made sure no one would be polluted by it. By the time the Stuart monarchy was restored in 1660, English audiences were ripe for theatrical entertainment. They had seen first-hand the absurdity of shifting power, the uncertainty of social contracts, the hypocrisy that passed for justice. Restoration comedy offered up a satirical cure to a society in need of correction; it exposed, with humor, the foulness beneath extended shows of decorum. William Congreve’s plays are the theatrical greats of the late Restoration. He wrote five in all, four of them comedies. His earliest play The Old Bachelor led Dryden to claim that he “never saw such a first play in his life.” Bachelor ran for an almost unprecedented fourteen days (a palpable hit for that time). The Way of the World was Congreve’s final piece for the theater and is considered “his most sophisticated and complete comedy, a masterpiece.” Congreve made exceptional use of Restoration stock characters and plot points. His comedies engage elements of scandal, deception, and bawdiness, and assign victory to young lovers. He noted the advantage of real women on stage. Congreve’s women demonstrate an interest in self-sovereignty. Millamant, the charismatic heroine 10
of The Way of the World, insists, “I’ll never marry, unless I am first made sure of my will and pleasure.” Her pleasure materializes in the form of the dashing and rakish-but-penitent Mirabell. But the heart wants what the heart wants. She bids liberty adieu. Congreve’s plays flaunt both male and female desire, and attend particularly to cravings for cash and copulation. It is worth noting that morality is not altogether absent from Congreve’s plays; it is, however, decidedly less attractive than wit. Congreve is a dramatist who makes intelligence sexy. Theresa Rebeck’s biting and brilliant adaptation drives home how thoroughly Congreve is our contemporary. Her play depicts the scandalous goings-on of the 1%, and gives new meaning to “the comedy of manners.” There is a current of theatricality that is spot-on. The characters’ obsession with dress and accessories suggests that performance trumps real life among the East Hampton elite. Even nature must be enhanced unnaturally to merit a place in the elaborate design. Attention is paid across the board to objects and to pretty things. There is something unsettling in the way characters fuse emotional and material attractions. We see this in casual bantering between friends: “If it weren’t for that vintage Louis Vuitton bag, I would never even speak to you.” The dysfunction is more striking when the Waitress, nameless and paid to be invisible, is

distressed to find that the bulk of lovely objects in rich people’s homes are forgotten, neglected by their owners. “What is the point of having all these things,” she asks, “if you don’t even know you have them?” It is a resistance to objects as well as to her own objectification that inspires Mae, the play’s virtuous and disturbingly rich heroine, to make a change. Mae is compelling; her goodness is so clear that we are perhaps more delighted by her choices than we are surprised by them. What is unexpected is the propensity for change Mae inspires and ignites. Henry, initially a cad on the trail of Mae’s money, is startled by the depth of his affection for her. He just may be bent on goals beyond a pursuit of property. Others, too, surprise themselves with tiny epiphanies that permit them suddenly to examine their own imperfect behavior.
It’s not clear that any great change will come of it. Still, the desire to do and be better is potentially heroic; it is a marker of the play’s most noble characters. If that’s not the way of the world then it should be. –Michele Osherow

FROM COFFEE HOUSES TO COCKTAIL PARTIES In Theresa Rebeck’s adaptation of The Way of the World, characters sip blue martinis and other colorful drinks as a sign of their sophistication. Blue martinis are a particularly appropriate choice: this fashionable drink takes its color from blue curacao, a liqueur originally crafted by Lucas Bols, a Dutch contemporary of William Congreve, and flavored by the peels of the laraha orange, native to the Caribbean island of Curacao. Bols was able to bring such exotic flavors to his family distillery when he became a major shareholder in the Dutch East India Company.1 The Hampton elite in Rebeck’s adaptation distinguish themselves through such cosmopolitan consumption; in doing so, they echo a crucial theme in Congreve’s The Way of the World (1700), which opens in a “chocolate house,” an institution that plays a key role in this comedy, as do beverages with pharmaceutical properties. In the adaptation, characters end up in awkward sexual situations after their blue martinis; some eighteenthcentury critics, however, suspected coffee, tea, and chocolate as having similar effects on judgment and the body.
on those admired by travelers to the Ottoman Empire. In some coffee houses, proprietors even wore turbans to remind customers of the Ottoman origin this institution. English chocolate came from the colonies, produced by slave labor—a brutal system that still haunts this treat.2 Tea, a drink now understood as quintessentially British, only became popular in the late seventeenth century with the marriage of King Charles II to the Portuguese Catherine of Braganza. The Portuguese has long enjoyed tea, a benefit from their ambitious trading voyages to China. In Congreve’s time, tea remained a relatively new import, and the English were in the process of developing socially significant rituals around this beverage, with the most important woman of the household presiding over the tea ceremony.3 Thus Congreve’s heroine is not being bossy by demanding control of her tea-table, but rather establishing her place in a complex social hierarchy.
Like the blue martini, they also signaled power struggles in a global context: in negotiating the terms of her marriage, the reluctant heroine of Congreve’s play insists that, in partial compensative for “dwindling” into a wife, that she remain “sole Empress” of her tea table. Tea, coffee, and chocolate have become commonplace beverages, but London saw its first coffee houses only one generation before Congreve’s play first opened. In Congreve’s time, coffee houses were still exotic institutions, modeled

Folger Theatre Folger Shakespeare Library, opened in 1932, featured the first replica in North America of an Elizabethan theater, a 250-seat space designed to suggest the innyard playing spaces. Founders Henry and Emily Folger envisioned it as a place for the performance of the plays in Shakespeare’s style, and the first nationally televised broadcast of a Shakespeare play in the US was Julius Caesar from the Folger stage in 1949. Folger Theatre produces seasons of Shakespeare, other plays from the period of the Folger’s rare collection, and new work, including commissions, inspired by the period. Including award-winning stagings of more than 70 percent of Shakespeare’s canon, as well as classical and Restoration work, Folger Theatre premiered the original Shakespeare for My Father, Lynn Redgrave’s reminiscence of her theatrical family, as well as Roger Rees’ What You Will; co-produced Teller and Aaron Posner’s magical Macbeth, released on video; was the first Washington venue to present a production from Shakespeare’s Globe; and has collaborated with the Classical Theatre of Harlem, the Oregon Shakespeare Festival, The Guthrie, Hudson Valley Shakespeare Festival, and other theaters across the country. Folger Theatre is the recipient of 30 Helen Hayes Awards including for Outstanding Resident Production for Sense and Sensibility, The Taming of the Shrew, Hamlet, and Measure for Measure.
Janet Alexander Griffin Artistic Producer Director of Public Programs for the Folger Shakespeare Library since 1982. She has produced 85 plays, including 32 Shakespeare plays, for which Folger Theatre has been recognized with 146 nominations and 30 awards for excellence in acting, direction, design, and production from Washington’s Helen Hayes Awards. Among new work she has developed at Folger was Lynn Redgrave’s solo show, Shakespeare for My Father, which in final development toured internationally and earned Redgrave a Tony Award. Responsible for the Folger Shakespeare Library’s season of performing arts and cultural events, she has overseen the growth of the Folger Consort early music series and developed contemporary literature and lectures at Folger, including the O.B. Hardison Poetry Series and Folger’s partnership with the PEN/Faulkner Foundation, bringing the country’s most renowned writers to the Washington, DC area.
Beth Emelson Associate Artistic Producer Folger Theatre: since 2004.
