t’s pretty devastating. I can’t lie,” admits Judi Evans, who makes her DAYS exit this week as Adrienne Johnson Kiriakis, a role she started playing in 1986. “You don’t know what to think ... It’s like a part of your life, a big part, is gone.” Rumblings of Adrienne’s impending demise first surfaced on set. “I heard some rumors from a couple of people in the crew, and I was like, ‘What? What?!’” recounts Evans. “Albert [Alarr, co-executive producer] is usually on the floor during taping, so I kind of sidled over to him and said, ‘Hey. Is this true?’ He said, ‘Yeah, yeah, yeah. But let me talk to you about it.’ So that’s how I found out. It’s that whole thing where a cold shiver goes down your spine. You can’t believe it, because it’s something you just don’t think about, especially [playing] a longtime character like that.” Evans began trying to absorb the information. “It’s just sad, because I loved working there,” she says. “And there are not a lot of roles for women my age, so that makes it a little harder. It was kind of nice knowing I had a place to go.”

JUDI EVANS ON DAYS EXIT

Logically, Evans understood the decision. “It’s what they needed to do. It was a sacrifice for the show, a good sacrifice, and it truly makes sense,” she concedes. “It’s a really good story point, and it gave Wally [Kurth, Justin] tons of material, which I love. The work he’s been doing has been really amazing.” This week, Adrienne’s sudden demise will play out, and her family shares poignant goodbyes, which Evans had to lie perfectly still for in the scenes. “That was maybe some of the hardest work ever, because I couldn’t move. But I could hear them, and it was tear-jerking,” explains Evans. “I just had to do my best to keep my eyes closed. I couldn’t be crying, because Adrienne was dead. Between every take I’d be like, ‘I need tissues.’ “It was hard, especially being such a reactionary person, not

to react. The scenes were so amazingly written and acted,” continues Evans, commending Kurth, Freddie Smith (Sonny), Matthew Ashford (Jack) and Mary Beth Evans’s (Kayla) performances. Evans’s last day on set wasn’t filled with mushy, private good-byes between her and her co-stars by her own volition. “I had the day with them, but I kind of kept to myself,” she notes. “I’m a very emotional person and saying good-bye is really hard

for me. When the scenes were over, Albert said, ‘You’ve been working with these people for some 30 years. Say whatever you’d

“It’s pretty devastating. I can’t lie.” like to say.’ I’m not good at speeches. So I just tried to make it short and sweet and not blubber too much, but of course I did. I said, ‘It’s been an honor and a

pleasure.’ Then I handed out my cards and said, ‘Call me. We’ll have lunch,’ ” Evans adds with a laugh. At the time, Evans gave little thought to the possible silver lining: She could still return to Salem as Bonnie Lockhart, the brash hell-raiser she’s also portrayed on the soap. “That’s always true, but it’s nothing we can really guarantee,” offers Evans. “I mean, it would be great if it happened, but I don’t put a lot of thought into it.” 5

DAYS: KRISTEN AND BRADY’S BABY “DIES” ■ Kristen’s baby is born, then tragically dies — along with Haley — as DAYS flashes back to Mother’s Day in a week that changes the canvas forever. Things start off awkwardly when Kristen and Brady join John and Marlena for a Mother’s Day celebration. “Marlena’s not too happy to have Kristen in her home, and John just deals with it,” sets up Kristen’s portrayer, Stacy Haiduk. “Kristen is feeling hopeful. She’s willing to try and throw out all the stuff from the past to be there because she loves Brady.” Things are going relatively smoothly until Eric shows up with Holly and is livid to see Kristen. While Brady takes him outside to talk, “Kristen is left with Marlena,” says Haiduk. “They’re having an intimate conversation when Kristen’s water breaks.” Brady and Kristen head to the hospital. “It’s a Kristen pregnancy, so it’s intense,” notes the actress. “There’s some ups and downs, but because Brady’s there, she can do it.” Kristen passes out, and when she comes to, Brady delivers alarming news: The umbilical cord is wrapped around their unborn child’s neck. “Kristen is like, ‘Is it dead?’ ” recounts Haiduk. “Brady [assures her] the baby is okay, but she’s going to 6

have to push; otherwise, the baby can suffocate. She’s devastated, but wants this baby and is going to fight for it.” Kristen ends up delivering a healthy baby girl. “The doctor hands her the baby, and she and Brady have a moment to just enjoy the beauty of their newborn child. It’s wonderful, what Kristen’s been waiting for for years.” In the interim, Xander and Sarah arrive at the hospital with Sarah’s newborn, and things take a shattering turn when Sarah’s baby suddenly dies. Victor instructs Xander to switch the two infants. As Xander brings Kristen’s child to Sarah, Haley informs Kristen and Brady that their doctor needs to speak to them and heads off to get him. “Kristen is not going to sit back and wait for the doctor,” asserts Haiduk. “She follows Haley and keeps at it: ‘Tell

me what happened with my baby.’ Finally, Haley tells her the bad news. Kristen can’t believe it. She’s in total shock. Her baby was perfect and now she’s dead? It’s that pain that goes beyond. You don’t know what you’re doing and acting out. She accidentally shoves Haley down a flight of steps.” Kristen returns to her room “in kind of a zombie state,” explains Haiduk. “Kristen can’t even speak. It’s almost like it was a horrible nightmare.” Brady comes in after, and the two try to process what happened. “They have a moment together before he brings the baby in,” notes Haiduk. “Kristen can’t even handle it. She doesn’t want to touch the baby because she doesn’t believe it’s really true. But then she realizes she has to say good-bye. They’re going through it together. It’s heartbreaking.”

B&B: WYATT DUMPS SALLY FOR FLO Over And Over Again:

HOWARD WISE/JPI

■ Wyatt has been doing some soul-searching about his future with Sally from the moment she mistakenly called him Liam. “It’s crazy,” says Darin Brooks (Wyatt). “The whole thing with Sally didn’t sit right with him. He has been living in his brother’s shadow for years now, and he is fed up with being compared to Liam, and competing with Liam, and always losing out. Wyatt is a guy who wears his emotions on his sleeve. What we saw was a slip of the tongue, and Wyatt doesn’t know what to think about that.” Plus, Wyatt is still fighting his feelings for his first love. “Flo did this miraculous thing, this selfless act,” the actor notes. “She saved Katie. It reminds him of who he fell in love with in the first place — that’s the type of person she is, or she was when he knew her back in high school.” And Wyatt is ready to put Flo’s past with Reese behind them. “Wyatt is not happy with what Flo did, but he can see it from her perspective,” adds Brooks. “It wasn’t completely her

fault. She was forced into it with Buckingham and his scheme and the whole thing, and Wyatt is the type of person who, in his mind,

“Wyatt is a guy who wears his emotions on his sleeve.” blames the brunt of that on Buckingham. Wyatt knows that Flo is not the type of person to do something like that. She just got caught between a rock in a hard place. It was one secret that kind of grew and snowballed into a bigger thing, and I think he has made peace with that.

It’s hard now, because he is stuck in the middle.” Sally and Wyatt get together to talk, and Wyatt can tell there is something off with her. “There’s some stuff going on there,” nods Brooks. “Sally doesn’t seem like herself, and anybody who knows anybody really well can tell when somebody is withholding some sort of information. It’s a tough spot. There’s really nothing Wyatt can do, but he does know that something is up with Sally.” Nevertheless, Wyatt realizes that he has to end things with Sally — again — and try for a future with Flo. 7

late- breaking news ■ It’s been a week since Sharon’s breast cancer diagnosis and not surprisingly, she’s in an emotional tailspin. “Sharon is feeling overwhelmed that her life now revolves around cancer,” says Head Writer Josh Griffith. “She also feels she has lost control over her life. Sharon is proud of her independence so she feels guilty that she will need to rely heavily on those around her as she begins treatment.” Luckily, Rey is in Sharon’s corner. “When Rey learns that Sharon has cancer, he goes into ‘fight mode’ to support her,” explains Griffith. “He wants to make sure Sharon is armed with all the information and resources available as she begins treatment.” Nevertheless, Sharon is upset that Faith is moving back to Genoa City because of her mother’s health crisis. “Sharon confides in Rey that she feels guilty when Faith decides to leave boarding school,” Griffith shares. “However, Rey assures Sharon that Faith isn’t making a sacrifice, but rather a decision to be closer to her mother when she’s needed the most.” Mariah is also determined to support her mom. 8

Team Work: Nick (Joshua Morrow) is one of many who’s there for Sharon (Sharon Case).

“Mariah has a lot on her plate but knows she must put her own problems aside and stay strong for both Sharon and Faith,”

“Sharon is feeling overwhelmed.” notes Griffith. “Sharon and Mariah’s bond will grow even stronger.” After Rey leaves for the police station, Nick shows up to check on Sharon. At first, she maintains a brave face until he coaxes her to open up to him. Sharon then admits that it’s tearing her heart out to see how anxious and worried Faith is because of her. Nick assures Sharon that

their daughter will be fine, then presents Sharon with a gift, which is a simple necklace with three individual charms, one word on each: faith, hope, love. Sharon can no longer fight back the tears. “Nick’s natural instinct is to step in whenever Sharon is in trouble,” Griffith notes. “However, Nick will do his best to respect Sharon’s relationship with Rey and not overstep.” Griffith adds that more people will be rooting for Sharon in the weeks and months ahead. “Sharon’s family and friends will show their love and support in their own unique ways, surprising both themselves and Sharon in the process,” he previews.

you’ve got to face up to it, and it’s just so unbelievably uncomfortable? He’s got to take his lumps — and these are such big lumps to take. Nikolas is realizing, ‘Just because I did what I wanted to do, that wasn’t the right thing to do, necessarily.’ ” For Nikolas to get back into Spencer’s good graces, Coloma acknowledges, “The climb is going to be uphill.” Nik is down in the dumps as he heads back to Port Charles — and Ava twists the knife by pressing the issue of the post-nup she wants him to sign. Offers Coloma, “I personally believe Nik and Ava are two people with really big hearts, but they’ve been through hell; they’ve been through a lot of suffering. They’ve gotten tough, and there’s this kind of thick-skin armor that covers

■ With new wife Ava by his side, Nikolas travels abroad to reveal to his son that he’s alive. But his reunion with Spencer doesn’t quite live up to Nik’s expectations. After a three-year separation, Nikolas is “so excited” to see his son, according to his portrayer, Marcus Coloma. “Nikolas has been so focused, and has had such a strong conviction that the whole purpose of this [quest to reclaim the Cassadine estate from Valentin] was to help Spencer and get Spencer back. In his mind, Nikolas taking it back is getting his relationship back with his son.” But Spencer makes it clear to his father that he won’t just forgive and forget that Nik allowed him to believe that he was dead. Coloma reports, “In the scene, Spencer brings up such great points, and it’s hard [on Nik]. I think Nikolas had an understanding that there would be some reconciliation that needed to happen, but I do think there was a very sincere hope and belief that his son would understand him. But you know when you do something that’s just embarrassingly wrong and then

a lot of desire to love and be loved. I think if Nik and Ava could just bring the walls down, there could be this really romantic, true love, soul mate thing going on. All of that said, when she brings up the post-nup, it’s immediately like, ‘Now you’re just another person after my money. Okay, so that’s the game we’re playing.’ I’m very curious to see where it ultimately goes, but it’s a very interesting relationship. Either they’ll fall in love or they’ll kill each other!” Nik does sign the document — after adding a key condition of his own — then turns his attention to smoothing things over with his other ticked-off loved ones back at home. “He knows it’s not going to be easy,” Coloma notes. “It’s such a big hole that the character has dug for himself.”

In San Francisco, Kyle and Summer return to his hotel suite after nailing a successful business deal. “They were in negotiations to buy this cosmetics company, which was complicated because there was a lot of going back and forth with them,” explains Hunter King (Summer). “Now Kyle and Summer are super-excited and very proud of what they were able to pull off, so they break into the minibar and order room service.” Kyle then asks if Summer and Theo are really over and she confirms that she’s happily single. When Kyle declares that Summer deserves better than Theo, she asks if Kyle is truly happy with Lola. “You can see that the questions make him tense but because Summer knows him so well, she senses there’s something wrong,” says King. “Summer isn’t being manipulative. She’s trying to be mature and honest, but in that moment there’s this pull of chemistry between them.” Which leads to Kyle pulling Summer into a kiss....

BOLD AND BEAUTIFUL Eric Boots Shauna After his conversation with Brooke about Shauna, Eric takes action. “The only thing he can do, the only way he can help the situation, is to get Shauna off the property,” states John McCook (Eric). “He thinks it is inappropriate that she’s still staying there while Ridge is still flirting with her. He understands Brooke’s motivations. However, the argument from Quinn is, ‘Look, if Ridge is going to have a thing with Shauna, he’s going to do it wherever. If Ridge wants to have an affair, he will,’ so that’s the frustration there. But, because Eric is very protective of Brooke, he pulls Shauna out of the area and gets her off the property.” The move apparently does not affect Eric and Quinn’s relationship. “When you see the scenes, as angry as Quinn gets with Eric — and she is chastising Eric — you can see how much they still love each other,” chuckles McCook. “As difficult as this decision is for Quinn to handle, I don’t think it’s a deal-buster.”

What Will Happen

Realizing that she feels off, Sally goes to the doctor. “Sally has been having quite a bit of headaches that have progressed to dizziness, and she is not really quite sure it’s stress or if there is an underlying issue,” states portrayer Courtney Hope. “Her hands start shaking and then it becomes difficult for her to design, which is when her designs start to falter. She starts to get stressed out. Sally is never really sick. It’s not something she ever deals with and she prides herself on being really healthy, so this is kind of odd for her to feel this way, and so she takes herself to the doctor.” Sally bumps into Katie. “Sally is feeling really alone,” sighs Hope. “She doesn’t like to share. She doesn’t want to show anyone that something is wrong, and when Katie shows up, Sally is at that moment where she is very vulnerable. It’s the perfect door for Sally to be able to share what she’s feeling. There’s a lot of stress that Sally has been putting on herself, trying to pretend like everything is okay, at work and around Wyatt, so to be able to have someone to open up to, I think she needs it more than she thinks she does.” The Doctor Is In: Sally (Hope) consults with a professional.

GENERAL HOSPITAL Brad’s In The Hot Seat After Nelle blackmails Brad into letting her crash with him, Brad is on the receiving end of some pointed questions from Michael. “Her appearance is unraveling all the work that Brad has done to just barely juggle the pieces of his life into some semblance of order,” says Parry Shen (Brad) of Nelle’s unwelcome arrival. To make matters worse, Nelle insists on holding her biological child. “Brad always had the buffer of Pentonville to keep Nelle and her unpredictable ways away from Wiley and himself. Now that’s gone and he’s very apprehensive, to say the very least, about her intentions, especially with her holding Wiley and potentially reinforcing her maternal bond with him.” Michael shows up at Brad’s, sees Wiley in Nelle’s arms, and demands answers about why he would let Nelle anywhere near Michael’s godson. Shen says Brad fears “that the whole thing is going to come out right then and there! Q Emme Rylan (Lulu, GH) has a beauty tool that she

swears by. “I like to use an ice roller, which closes up your pores,” she shares. “The one I use is ESARORA, and I got it on Amazon. I break out less from using my makeup when I’ve closed up my pores, and let me tell you, at five o’clock in the morning, it will wake you up, because it is so cold! For my undereyes, or any puffiness if I’ve eaten Indian food or Chinese food — something saltier than I normally eat — it really helps to decrease that puffiness. I love that thing! I also have a jade roller, the Matykos jade roller. When I wash my face and put on oil, I use the roller around my whole face in an upward motion. That is also really cold and helps to close your pores.”

my take

Q Do you have a personal outlook for fashion in 2020? “I just

want to be more stylish every day. At work, they dress me so cute and when I’m home, I’m always in jeans and a T-shirt. I always feel like I’m so boring. I see clothes that I love so much and I would love to wear around town or shopping or whatever. So, I’d like to dress up more with skirts and dresses and cute things like that. I haven’t been able to do that a lot.” Any new beauty products that you’re using and loving? “Yes, there is a cream by IT Cosmetics and it is called their Secret Sauce. It is the best skin moisturizer that I’ve ever used. It’s a little jar and you can get it at Sephora. It is my favorite thing right now. And you know what else I love? It’s Michelle Stafford’s [Phyllis, Y&R] line, Skin Nation. Her Super C Serum is really great, too. I use those two things together.”

ere they’re going...what they’re doing

Do you find your products online or like to shop in person? “I love to shop in person. I have sensitive

skin so I like to try it on my hand or whatever and see if it’s going to affect my skin. I feel like when you buy it online you don’t really know.” What’s your favorite perfume? “Santal 33 from Le Labo. It’s a woodsy scent. Like a guy could wear it, too. Unisex.” What is usually your skin care routine? “I tone my face with the IT Cosmetics. It’s called Bye Bye Pores. And then I just put the Secret Sauce on my face and I just walk around all day. That’s pretty much it.” How do you remove makeup? “I use a spin brush. It’s so great. I use that and then Aveeno [Clear Complexion] face wash.” What is your routine before bed? “I wash my face with the spin brush and then I’ll tone it with Bye Bye Pores. I’ve been also putting the Skin Nation Super C serum on there.”

Melissa Ordway (Abby, Y&R)

What beauty products do you pick up in drugstores? “I like Neutrogena eye makeup

remover. And Great Lash Mascara by Maybelline. It’s just like the old-school mascara.”

he’s using Zoe, a bright, attractive young woman who has been through the Baby Beth ringer just like him. She regrets what she did, is trying to build a new future, and wants Thomas in it. We get that Hope’s maternal instinct is strong, but she isn’t the only game in town: If Zoe cares for Douglas the same way she nurtured her late cat, Harry, she’d make a fine mother figure for Thomas’s son. Plus, the Thomas/Zoe dynamic is working. Bringing Zende back would be a more believable spoiler for this burgeoning romance. The Hope angle just feels like a road to nowhere. Ultimately, though, Thomas’s worst enemy is himself, and he really needs to get out of his own way if he is really going to find a new path. — Tom Stacy 29

■ The new year kicked off with a bang, with most soaps treating us to A-listers in sparkly gowns and letting the sparks fly. ■ GH pulled out all the stops with two lavish parties, the biggest at Wyndemere for Nina’s predictably shiny/creepy wedding to Valentin. Ava prepped by sipping martinis and taunting the other guests, so you knew she wasn’t going to be around to catch the bouquet. Laura (suspicious): “It’s not like you and Nina are the best of friends.” Ava: “Water under the bridge. It’s toxic, flammable water and all the fish are dead but ...” Jax: “If there are any fireworks tonight, I don’t want Nina hurt.” Fireworks included Nina confirming Valentin was behind her fake daughter, Laura suspecting Nikolas was alive, and Martin luring Ava to the turret so Valentin could hurl her off. Valentin: “You have been drinking heavily. It’s cold and icy. It would be a shame if you slipped.” 30

In case you missed the foreshadowing from Ava’s chirpy poem (“Happy is the bride the sun shines on/Happy is the corpse the rain falls on”), the new year did indeed ring in with a bang. Well, not so much a bang as a splash when Ava and her sequins hit the water. Martin (to Nina during the ceremony): “Do you take this man...?” Bang! In came Nikolas car-

about her baby that “died”. Nelle (to Willow, who doesn’t know it was her baby that died): “It almost would have been easier if he had been stillborn but he passed away in my arms.” Willow: “I can imagine.” Ouch. And what’s funnier than Nelle making a vision board in prison of her 2020 goals? Watch your backs, P.C.!

Thomas stalks Hope and she forgives him because he knows how to belt a smock. in her sparkly dress. That’s how you throw a party. The other bash featured the younger set mingling with Ned and Brook Lynn. I wish Tracy had joined them, but I did enjoy her drinking apple cider back at the Qs’.... Adam: “I see the real you ... to you and me and what can be.” Blech. And if there’s anything more boring than watching Billy and Amanda at a dive bar talking about how much they hate everyone, don’t show it to me. Far more entertaining were Kevin and Chloe trying to announce their pregnancy but being thwarted at every turn. Esther: “I’ve joined a dating app!” Oh, dear. Mazel to the expectant couple — let’s see more of them. ■ We saw more of Doug and Julie (finally!) at their festive bash at Julie’s Place on DAYS. Kayla confessed to Justin that she thought she saw Steve at Christmas except he didn’t have an eye patch and they didn’t speak. Justin: “I don’t understand.”

Me, neither. Patch is now Stefano and Hope’s body has been inhabited by Princess Gina for over a year, which means none of her loved ones have noticed her bizarre skulking around John. That’s preposterous even for a show that’s had 90 percent of its cast return from the dead. Even when a smartie like Kayla suspects the truth, they are somehow talked out of it. Kate: “Who is he, Patchy Claus? If it’s Steve playing Santa why isn’t he wearing an eye patch?” This is what passes for reality in Salem. That said, all those unwanted guests made for a rollicking ball drop. John (to Marlena): “What do you say we go to this party and forget about Hope and Stefano?” Enter “Hope” and “Stefano”. “I’m back!” he announced, posing as Patch. Steffy: “My brother wants to win the contest for Hope.” Sally: “Can I ask how that happened?” Steffy: “It’s a complicated relationship.” Yes, Thomas stalks Hope and she forgives him because he knows how to belt a smock. It’s not complicated, it’s pathological. Thomas: “I am the ruler of this kingdom. I will celebrate the day that I take the women and the children to your gravesite and remind them what a twotiming son of a bitch you are.” Liam: “Is that a threat?” Nothing gets by him. I’d give every sequin in L.A. to watch Liam, Brooke and Bill flatten that perv (enough with the shots of him staring at Hope’s breasts!) and shut him up for good. Bill: “I don’t trust that twisted freak.” 5-4-3-2 ... cue the celebration! ■ Hey. It’s only my opinion. 앮 31

Three shocking deaths rock DAYS in a can’t-miss week of shows

his week on DAYS, viewers will finally see how Adrienne died, along with Haley’s untimely demise, what happened with Kristen and Brady’s baby, Sarah and Eric’s and so much more. Previews Head Writer Ron Carlivati, “We kind of always knew from the moment we did the time jump that we would set a full week on the air in one night in the past and the audience could really sink in and watch that whole day and night unfold, not in little bits and pieces, but all at once.” The scribe has spent the past few months laying the groundwork for the powerful tales. “We knew that we wanted to set up these mysteries and let them unfold slowly over time,” he explains. “We also knew that some of these things are interconnected. So, revealing one will actually kind of reveal something about another related story, or maybe even a seemingly unrelated story. All of the pieces kind of fit together. We had to pick and choose our moments very carefully of when to reveal them. We talked about holding it to February sweeps but it really wasn’t holding, and we decided January would be the best time to do it and set the stakes for what happens in 32

Good Morning?

February sweeps. If we could have a lot of big reveals in January, that would be satisfying to the audience. We realized that just showing a re-created flashback here or there would not be satisfying because so much stuff happened on one particular day in Salem.” This one particular day is Mother’s Day, which has major ramifications across the canvas. “We sort of set everything up in the present and then on this mother of all weeks, we reveal what happened,” says Carlivati. “When we calculated the night that Sarah and Kristen would have had their babies, it would have been in May based on how pregnant they were before we did the time jump, and so we decided Mother’s Day was the perfect time to set this whole thing, to have two women about to be mothers. We have Sonny and Will and Justin celebrating Mother’s Day with Adrienne, we have Sarah celebrating Mother’s Day with Maggie, we have a Mother’s Day at Marlena’s house with Brady bringing Kristen over, which you can imagine is a lot of fun. We’ll see all of Mother’s Day play out and what happened that night that these babies were born, what happened to Adrienne, what happened to Haley. This is a monumental day in Salem

and so much happens. You really need to watch this week because you’re going to see it all unfold in a very dramatic fashion.” Carlivati concedes that it isn’t going to be the most uplifting viewing experience. “It wasn’t until we went to thread it all together that we really realized that it all was happening on one night,” he notes. “In some ways, it was set up that way because the stories are connected, but on the other hand, it didn’t really sink in on me or the writers that we’d have three deaths in the space of one night. It’s very exciting, but I have to sort of warn people up front that it’s very tragic. I mean, obviously, they’ve been aware of these deaths since the time jump, but to see it all play out, it is very moving and it is very tragic. There is a lot of excitement. But it does solve a lot of mysteries and so, in a lot of ways it will be, I think, very satisfying for the audience.” And it doesn’t signal the end of the story, he adds. “One of my

favorite things about it also is that there are so many satisfying reveals and answers to questions that the audience has been asking,” Carlivati says. “We definitely also have held back one or two big things that connect to this story that are still to be revealed. So, just when you think at the end of this week you know everything, there are one or two big mysteries yet to be told.” 앮

COMEDY DUO

GH’s James (l.) gets a kick out of working with real-life pal Michael.

James Patrick Stuart (Valentin) is having a blast working on GH with his longtime pal Michael E. Knight (Martin). “We laugh more than two human beings ever should and we just love each other’s company,” he says. “We are going to be two old farts very soon, sitting on the porch playing checkers, but in the meantime, we’ve got a gig! It was a surprise to me [that we’d be working together]. The scene where we broke into Ava’s gallery together, somebody was in on the joke; somebody really appreciated what the two of us have because it was so silly. There was so much comedy in it, it was ridiculous. And like Finola [Hughes, Anna] taught me, ‘You’ve just got to break the glass.’ You just have to go full-tilt and don’t even question it and just commit. Michael was giggling because when he showed up and he was representing Franco, he was a much different character than this buffoon in Ava’s storeroom! I got to be the straight man to one of my favorite comedic actors and it made me really happy.”

Y&R’s Chase has enjoyed his international success.

Chase Coleman (Tanner, Y&R) says that it was a kick playing Oliver the werewolf on THE ORIGINALS. “He started out as a villain type based on what he thought was justified for his clan,” the actor explains. “Without really spoiling it for anyone who would potentially want to watch it, he definitely makes a round trip to the different side of things. It was a great run.” Thanks to the international cult following for the show, Coleman still receives a lot of attention from the fans. “I’ve been doing appearances and conventions for the past maybe three-to-four years,” he shares. “I feel like I’ve become a staple of the Creation Entertainment conventions. They’ve basically been hiring me and Micah Parker [exAdrian, THE VAMPIRE DIARIES] to host the conventions for a few years now. And alongside that, my band has gotten to play concerts at these appearances. I’ve been all over the world. I went out and pursued other things. I also had my first child, with Michael Weatherly [exCoop, LOVING], who went on to do other things in television. He’s a big TV star now. But we met on that soap and that was really a fun point in my life. And then I came out to L.A. We came out to L.A. together and we both sort of pursued our nighttime careers and sort of just auditioned. I think he had a holding deal for some network. They did holding deals back then. Gosh, I’m making myself sound so old, but I guess I kind of am now. I’m like, “Back in the day ...” Digest: But you were still kind of a baby. You were still a teenager when you were hired on LOVING. Heinle: Yeah, that’s true. Thank you for making me feel better. I was young. Digest: Tell us about what life was like for you on LOVING. Heinle: Oh, my gosh. It was a great experience. It was hard to leave, but I knew I wanted to try other things at that age. I remember Jessica Collins [ex-Dinah Lee] was there, who also made an appearance later on YOUNG AND RESTLESS [as Avery]. She was on the show for awhile and I knew her from LOVING, so that was a great moment when she came on our show. I was like, “Wow. This is great.” We circled back around and met each other again, but essentially back then we weren’t really friends, we just kind of knew each other. When you come on a soap when you’re young, there’s like a different vibe.... Back then, we were just looking at each other like, “Is she gonna be better than me?” And I don’t think I really talked to her much back then but Rebecca Gayheart [ex-Hannah] was there. I remember she was nice, but she was leaving when I came in. Michael Weatherly, he was there for a little bit before I left and then he went and did other things. Roger Howarth [Franco, GH; ex-Kent] was on LOVING. Rena Sofer [Quinn, B&B; ex-Rocky], I think, had been there but left right as I got there. The person who really sticks out in my mind was Nancy Addison [ex-Deborah], who I worked with. She played my mom. They actually brought her on to play my mother and that’s 43

Soap Opera Digest: Let’s go back and start at the beginning of your show business career. Tell us how you broke into the business. Amelia Heinle: Okay. Well, I moved to New York after high school. I was 18. I think I wanted to get to the city, to be honest. I wanted to get out of New Jersey. I didn’t want to go to college. I wasn’t sure what I wanted to study. I got on a Greyhound bus and I ended up in New York. I started doing a little modeling and that sort of wasn’t what I was wanting. I think I probably did it for like a year and then I realized that wasn’t for me. While I was modeling I was also kind of going out [on] commercial auditions and things like that.... I remember I was working also at a coat check and it was called The Supper Club.... My agent, who was just a commercial agent, happened to have a role for a soap opera. I had really no acting experience, but I just sort of was like, “Oh, this would [be] kind of fun.” So, I went uptown. It was 66th Street where all the studios used to be, where they used to tape ALL MY CHILDREN and LOVING and ONE LIFE TO LIVE and GUIDING LIGHT. That was like the mecca of soaps. But I didn’t know that, I just was like this little coat-check girl/ model/nothing. And so I ended up going to the wrong studio. I remember it was raining. And then I ended up going [to] ONE LIFE TO LIVE ’cause it was confusing if you didn’t know the right studio. I finally ended up at the LOVING studio; that’s the soap opera that I auditioned for, and somehow I lucked into that role ’cause I had absolutely no experience. I landed the role of Steffi Brewster. I remember that was the worst name. I’m like, “Why would they name someone Steffi Brewster? It’s the worst soap opera name. It doesn’t even sound dramatic.” But it was fine. I mean, I was just happy to be doing it. I’m like, “How did I even get this job?” I remember later I became friends with the casting director who was like, “Well, you weren’t the best of the actresses, but we just had seen that you had a good instinct,” or something like that. Back then, they hired you off of stuff like that. I don’t think they do that as much anymore. But the role was mine and I took it for three years. It was old-school soap opera back then. And then I left ultimately after my three-year contract and

I remember I would sit in her dressing room and we’d just talk. She was a lot older than me, but I gained a lot of knowledge from her. She made it so much fun. I miss her. I wish she was still around. Who else was on that show? ... Do you remember Robert Tyler? Digest: Trucker! Who could forget Trucker? That’s a good soap name. Heinle: That’s what I mean. Why do the guys have all the good soap names? Digest: Laura Wright [Carly, GH; ex-Ally] was there, as well. Heinle: Oh, how could I forget Laura? That’s right. We were roommates for about eight months ’cause when I first came on, she was the person who was my friend. And then we 44

decided we were going to be roommates and that lasted about eight months. We had a blast. I mean, NewYork City at that age and having a job on a TV show. Right before I got on the show, I was watching it at home. My senior year in high school I would kind of get the second half of the day off and I’d go home and watch GENERAL HOSPITAL because I really, really, really loved Duke and Anna so very much. I would skip the end of school to go watch them. And I think LOVING would come on before or after. It was ABC. So that’s why I ended up watching LOVING. And then I would see Michael and I would see Rebecca and they had their little storyline. I’m like, “Look at that. Those are cool.” It was like a kids storyline and I was a kid, so I was like, “Oh, cool. I’m gonna watch it.” And a year later I was on the show. This is weird. It was a great time to be on a soap opera. Now it is, too, but back then we used to sort of tour the country a little bit more and more people were watching, I think. It was kind of the golden age of soaps, or at least the tail end of it. It was fun. Digest: In 2001, you came back to daytime to play Mia Saunders on AMC. How did that come about? What brought you back? Heinle: I just was out here and I was sort of missing the East Coast and missing my family. I wanted to bring [son] August back home to the East Coast. I was a little bit burned out on California. The producer of that show actually had been the producer of LOVING at that time

I never really committed to it. I think I watched it when Christine was Cricket. Digest: This was your first time as a recast. What was it like to sort of step into this role knowing someone else had memorably played it? How did you approach it? Heinle: There was an element of wanting to be the strong [one] that everyone told me about, like, “Oh, she was very strong.” I was like, “Okay, well, that’s not really who I am.” It took me a little while. I tried to be that and it wouldn’t work. Honestly, it just took time. I didn’t read any people’s reactions. I didn’t want to know ’cause you can’t really compare yourself. I know Heather now. We see each other all the time. She’s awesome. I really, really like her. But there’s no way I could’ve played the character the way she played it. Ultimately, they wanted this strong character and ultimately I found my own strength. It may not have looked like hers, but it was mine. Digest: Next March it’s gonna be the 15-year mark that you’re hitting in the role of Victoria. What does that milestone sound like to you hearing it out loud and what does it mean to you? Heinle: It seems like that long, but it doesn’t seem like that long. It seems sometimes shorter and sometimes longer. It scares me to think, like, I never thought I would be in a place so long. Not that it’s gonna end anytime soon, but if it were, like this has become such a part of my life and the people I see on dayto-day basis is like.... This is like a legacy for me almost. I’ll be known for his, for being on Y&R because I’ve been there so long. If anyone Googles me one day they’ll be like, “Oh, yeah. She was on Y&R.” It’s like, “Wow, I’ve put my life into this place already and it just went by so fast.” My son is 24. Like I said at the beginning of this, that’s life. It just goes by really fast. I’m grateful. I don’t have any regrets about staying there. All those people that I work with I just love them, I adore 앮 them. and so I just reached out to her. She brought me back on. She just happened to open a role up for me, which I was really kind of nervous to do because I usually have to audition. And then I went back and I was with my family. It was a good down period to be back on the East Coast and just sort of take a break. It’s difficult out here sometimes when you’re in acting and you’re trying to get jobs. I just needed to take a little personal time, so I went on a soap and went back into the city. It was actually really refreshing. It was right around 9/11, actually. I always look back and I’m like, “I can’t believe I moved back to New York for three years and I’m there for 9/11 and the blackout and then I go back to L.A.” But back to the show, I ended up on ALL MY CHILDREN. I was working with Rebecca Budig [ex-Greenlee] and Alicia Minshew [exKendall] and Terri Ivens [ex-Simone]. I was only there for three years. Digest: You were the Fusion Girls. Heinle: The Fusion. Yes. Oh, my gosh. And one of our directors that ended up coming to Y&R later when I came to Y&R, he was there. He had been on ALL MY CHILDREN. His name is Conal O’Brien. He used to call us Fusions ’cause he would forget our names. He would be like, “Fusions! Stand over here!” But I think he thought it was funny and then later we did, too. Digest: After AMC wrapped, you joined Y&R, where you are now. The show had been looking for the right person to succeed Heather Tom as Victoria for a really long time. What do you remember about getting the role? Heinle: Well, I came back here. I think I was out here for about a year. I had decided to go back to daytime again. I gave myself a little year off to sort of see what I wanted to do. I was like, “Well, I better get a job.” I needed to be working again. I didn’t even have a manager. A friend of mine had this guy named Michael Bruno. He was like, “Do you want to go out for this role? It’s kind of a big role. I don’t know if you’re really interested. There’s gonna be a lot of dialogue. It’s Victoria Newman.” And I’m like, “Yeah, I know who that is.” And I knew of Heather Tom. I had seen Y&R. I had watched it when I was working at soaps, but

Didn’t Mimi on DAYS have a brother? What was his name? I can’t remember. K.G. in MD A Yes, Patrick Lockhart was Mimi’s

brother. He was portrayed by Brody Hutzler from 2004-07. Patrick is currently in prison for crimes he carried out at EJ’s behest and for holding Hope at gunpoint.

Q

Just curious. Are there any male characters on Y&R who are juniors? Simone, via email A Jack is actually John Abbott, Jr.; Nate

was named after his dad, Nathan Hastings, Sr.; Adam’s birth name is Victor Adam Newman; and Chance has the distinction of being Phillip Chancellor IV.

Q

Did I miss something on GH? What makes Willow think that

Orange Crush: DAYS’s Patrick (Brody Hutzler) was last seen getting a visit from mom Bonnie (Judi Evans, c.) and sister Mimi (Farah Fath).

Wiley is her son? She gave up a child for adoption. With all of the adoptions going on, why did she decide Wiley is hers? S.S., via email A In 2018, not long after Brad and Lucas

welcomed their adopted son, Wiley, into their family, they learned that the birth mother had changed her mind about signing away her parental rights. Julian got involved to persuade the birth mother not to reclaim the baby. Later, when Willow and Julian encountered one another at Charlie’s, it was revealed that she was the birth mother in question. So, Willow has always known that the child she birthed wound up in Lucas and Brad’s care. What she does not yet know is that her baby died the very first night he went home from the hospital, and the baby Brad and Lucas are raising is actually Michael and Nelle’s biological son, Jonah, who is believed to have died.

Was GH’s Maxie ever married to anyone before Nathan? C.L., Chicago, IL

A Yes. While her 2009 wedding to Spinelli ended without a marriage (they celebrated their “nonwedding” instead), Maxie was briefly married from May to October 2012 to Matt Hunter, Patrick Drake’s younger brother. Maxie, who had witnessed Matt drunkenly killing Lisa Niles, married him so that she could not be forced to testify against him.

How old is Thomas supposed to be on B&B? What about Hope and Steffy? Thank you. Jennifer P., via email A Thomas was born in January 1998,

Y&R’s Summer Newman has often been labeled a spoiled, scheming wild child, but I personally don’t see her that way. I believe she is very flawed and incredibly human. She really has changed for the better, too. After experiencing extreme heartbreak last year when she lost her beloved Kyle, she could have let herself turn bitter and mean-spirited. She could have sought revenge or schemed to keep him in her life. Instead, she owned up to the many mistakes she’s made. She even came to Kyle’s wedding to someone else and wished him well. If that isn’t character growth, I don’t know what is! Hunter King has always been a talented performer — she has two Emmys on the shelf to prove it! — but in 2019, her portrayal of the complex Summer was nothing short of brilliant. I really feel Hunter has what it takes to become a leading actress on the show. I really hope she gets a great storyline to sink her teeth into very soon. I am truly 68

GOTTA HAVE FAITH I so enjoyed your interview with Alyvia Alyn Lind, Y&R’s Faith, in the 12/30 issue. What a lovely young girl who Y&R fans have loved since the age of 3. She has grown up before our eyes and is wise beyond her years. So nice that she has the option to return to Genoa City when her schedule allows and that she enjoys being reunited with

DYNAMIC DUO I’m writing in to say that I really love Eric and Sarah together on DAYS! I also love that they have a baby together, Mackenzie, named after Mickey, her dad. HOLIDAY CHEER First of all, I have to say that I love your magazine. I would love to see more GH on the cover but that’s because I am a huge fan. Even though the December 23, 2019 episode of A Christmas Carol, with Tracy being present, and then on December 26, when Tracy walked into the Q mansion, was out of sequence, I loved those shows. It is classic GH at its best. I’ve been a fan of GH since the very early ’70s and I loved it. The only thing that I found a little sad is that

they changed Steve Hardy’s reading about the birth of Christ to ’Twas the Night Before Christmas and then A Christmas Carol. Both great books, but can you imagine what a wonderful opportunity they missed by excluding the original book? They could’ve had a few flashbacks and shown John Beradino and Rachel Ames, Steve and Audrey Hardy, who were original cast members on GH. All in all, it was a wonderful show.
