Five ways to a healthier you! Fancy making 2011 the year you feel good in your skin, have bags more energy, and a more positive outlook? Then there’s no time like the present, says Rachel Nott
QUIT SMOKING Could 2011 be the year you stop smoking? Have you perhaps made several attempts to quit in the past, but fallen by the wayside more times than you cared to recall? If you’re a smoker, giving up smoking may be the best thing you’ll ever do in your life for your family and your health. To give you the cold, hard facts, one in two smokers die of a smoking-related disease every year, and only three out of 10 heavy smokers will live past retirement age. This will, of course, have a direct impact on your family too. But the good news is that stopping smoking has health benefits at any age and can add years onto your life. Your life expectancy will improve particularly if you stop smoking before you’re 35, but it’s never too late. You’ll benefit from lower blood pressure and improved fitness levels and reduce your risks of developing cancer, heart disease and stroke. Stopping smoking or making your home smoke-free will protect your household from many health problems and also improve your cash flow. You could gain £2,000 a year or more just by quitting, which could pay for a fabulous family holiday or a few extra weekly treats. Many people carry on smoking not through choice but because they’re addicted to the nicotine, and many believe it will be impossible to stop. But, in fact, quitting is possible, and statistics show that with the support of NHS Stop Smoking Services, you’re four times more likely to successfully stop smoking. By providing nicotine replacement therapy and stop-smoking medications on prescription, NHS Bristol Stop Smoking Service can help you deal with your cravings and avoid relapse, so why not pick up that phone today? It could be the most important call you make this year…

GET FIT How many times have you joined a gym with all good intentions in January, only to fall off the wagon by March? It’s a familiar scenario for many us, but if you can motivate yourself to stick with it, you’ll reap the rewards of not only a healthier, fitter body but also stronger bones helping to ward off osteoporosis (which affects men as well as women) - and a greater sense of wellbeing thanks to those happy hormones, endorphins. It can also be an immensely sociable activity if you join a local running group or dance class. There are lots of gyms, personal trainers and classes to choose from, of course, but we’ve chosen three of Folio’s favourites. Part of the prestigious and very grand Clifton College, Clifton College Sports Centre on Guthrie Road (a banana’s throw from Bristol Zoo) is home to a fabulous 25m swimming pool – great for doing some serious lengths – and a 40-station fitness suite kitted out with weight-training and cardio equipment and those all-important big screens so you can catch the latest news or music video while you work out. From April to September, members can also make use of the badminton and outdoor tennis courts, which welcome guests free of charge, and squash courts are available as part of your membership by booking through the Redland Lawn Tennis Club. Personal training and a modest timetable of fitness classes, from circuit training to boxercise, are also on offer if you prefer to keep your exercise regime fun and varied. A range of monthly and annual membership options is available for individuals (£37.50 per month), couples (£65 per month) and families (£80 per month). For north Bristol residents, BS7 Sports and Fitness Club (part of Gloucestershire County Cricket Club) is an affordable and comprehensive option offering a huge array of classes, ranging from beginners to advanced and including out-of-the-ordinary Ski Fit (specially designed for those planning to hit the slopes), Fit Kidz (for ages 8-15), Buggy Fit, and Mums, Bums and Tums (a six-week course for new mothers wanting to get back in shape while looking after their babies), pilates, spinning and body conditioning. Classes are open to members and non-members on a pay-as-yougo basis so you can drop in and out as the mood (or life!) takes you. Members can also make use of the newly refurbished, state of the art gym, where you can choose to follow a number of exercise programmes from Weight Loss to the Workout Challenge, overseen by trained fitness instructors. Once you’ve finished your workout, what better way to relax and soothe tired muscles than in the male- and female-only saunas? Memberships start from £32 per month per individual. Over in Bath, Monkton Leisure Sports Club is situated just two miles outside the city

LOSE WEIGHT If it’s a little more than a Christmas pudding’s worth of extra weight that you’re carrying, you may find it helpful to call in the experts. LighterLife is a weight-loss and weightmanagement programme designed specifically for men and women with a Body Mass Index of 25 or over (ie one or more stone to lose). Through the use of nutritionally balanced soups, shakes and bars, you’re able to lose weight quickly and safely, and maintain your weight loss. Weekly single-sex group meetings are
the other key feature of LighterLife. Cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) and transactional analysis (TA) counselling techniques help clients to lose the weight and make lasting changes to keep it off. Run by your local LighterLife Weight-Management Counsellor Mark Andrew Ryder, they’re designed to help clients explore some of the reasons why they put on weight – because there’s usually a bit more to it than simply ‘eating too much’. Understanding why you overeat means you’re less likely to return to the old habits that led to weight gain in the first place. “The LighterLife Programme is the only national weight-loss and weight-management plan that looks beyond food, to examine lifestyle and emotions in order to help clients to break the weight-loss/weight-gain cycle and make lasting changes,” Mark tells Folio. “As the weight comes off, clients’ health and fitness levels improve, many are able to come off longterm medication and some find that they can do things they’ve never done before, which others take for granted, such as running around with the children, going for job promotions or planning the trip of a lifetime.” Sometimes, however, diets, exercise regimes and changes in behaviour just aren’t enough. Celebrities from Sharon Osbourne and Fern Bitton to Anne Diamond have led the way in showing that surgery is a safe and effective option for those suffering with obesity. Such surgery no longer carries the stigma that it did years ago: hundreds of thousands of patients worldwide have had successful weight-loss surgery, and much has been written in medical literature about its benefits. As well

HEAL YOUR BODY If your body creaks and groans each time you perform a downward dog yoga position, your finger joints are painfully swollen with arthritis or you’re suffering from a football injury that just isn’t going away by itself, it’s time to get yourself seen by a specialist. The Sport and Orthopaedic Clinic (SOC), based at the Spire Hospital in Redland, consists of eight experienced consultant orthopaedic surgeons offering a wide range of specialist interests - in particular hip, knee, foot and ankle, and shoulder and elbow orthopaedic and sports injury problems. SOC prides itself on being able to provide easy access to specialist assessment, investigations and treatment for patients of all ages, treating sports injuries, middle-aged aches and pains, and degenerative conditions such as arthritis. As well as careful expert advice about conservative management of symptoms, the clinic has excellent relationships with the local musculoskeletal radiologists for accurate investigations in the form of X-rays, ultrasound, CT and MRI scans. Working closely with their physiotherapy colleagues they’re able to perform therapeutic injections and provide innovative treatments such as shockwave treatment for conditions such as tennis elbow or plantar fasciitis. If it comes to surgery, SOC’s consultants can offer a full range of interventions, from up-to-date, minimally invasive keyhole arthroscopy surgery to major open surgical procedures such as joint replacements, including resurfacing operations. Alternatively, if you’re aware that your aches and pains are down to bad posture, you could benefit from a course of rolfing. Pioneered by Dr

Ida Rolf in the 1930s, rolfing draws on a range of disciplines including osteopathy, chiropractic medicine, yoga and Korzybski’s study of consciousness. By manipulating the fascial web that links all internal organs, this physically applied practice counteracts the negative effects that your own body sometimes produces in response to an injury, realigning the body, improving posture and enhancing movement and stability. After a course of around 10 sessions with Advanced Certified Rolfer Simon Wellby, you can expect to feel a greater sense of freedom and engagement with your body, which in turn will have a big impact on your overall sense of harmony and wellbeing. LEARN TO RELAX If you’re stuck in a rut of negative thinking and it’s seriously affecting your enjoyment of life and relationships with others, a course of hypnotherapy could help you to create positive changes in a short space of time. Hypnotherapy is a natural way to help people with their problems, whether past, present or future, and can help enormously with all kinds of emotional, nervous or psychological problems such as depression and anxiety. It’s also very beneficial for confidence boosting and phobias and can
help with addictions, anger, pain, blushing, OCD, IBS, sleeplessness, stress, sexual disorders and weight control. It’s now recognised as one of the most successful forms of therapy for depression, anxiety, and panic attacks. Indeed, the Health Education Authority states that, ‘Research shows that there is more scientific evidence for hypnotherapy than any other complementary therapy... by using hypnosis, people can perform prodigious feats of willpower and self-healing.’ Clinical hypnotherapist Shelley Jones uses solution focused brief therapy (also available at the Clifton Practice), which uses modern, practical strategies, such as cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) and neuro-linguistic programming (NLP) to help teach people to focus on solutions, not problems. “The advantage of this type of therapy is trance, which is a natural and ordinary state to be in,” Shelley tells Folio. “When you go into trance, your subconscious mind becomes receptive to positive suggestions and allows you to promote a change for the better. It’s important to note that a client is fully in control throughout the trance and isn’t expected to recount and relive painful memories or experiences - just positive goals that they wish to achieve. Above all, trance is a feeling of complete relaxation and tranquility.” Solution focused brief therapy is, as the name suggests, a rapid form of therapy and clients are usually seen for fewer than 12 sessions. Who's smiling now? Book an appointment with your dentist right now, says Melissa Blease. It might just change your life…

ou’ve embarked on the diet, alcohol (and tobacco, if you were once so inclined) has become a thing of the past and the gym membership card is about to become dog-eared with overuse... So what’s stopping you walking around with a big bold smile on your face? Today, a trip to the dentist has absolutely nothing in common with the grim encounters many of us may have experienced in the past. Even the reception area can be as welcoming as the lobby of your favourite boutique hotel, while the treatments on offer are as inviting - and as relaxing to undergo - as the services offered by your local hairdresser or spa. The results, meanwhile, can offer a genuinely life-changing experience to all those who are affected by troublesome teeth. An appointment at Evolve Dentistry in Portishead can make your A-list smile wishes come true. A warm welcome, chic but relaxing surroundings and even the offer of a glass of champagne from an exceedingly well stocked refreshment bar kickstart your journey down a road that takes in not only the most up-to-date treatments and procedures (including tooth whitening, veneers, white fillings and implants for those in search of a mouth makeover) but also facial rejuvenation options such as Botox and dermal fillers, alongside complementary homeopathic and holistic treatments. Orthodontic specialists can wave their magic wands to offer you a natural Hollywood smile without committing yourself to a cycle of replacements, and if, like many people, you experience feelings of phobiarelated anxiety, the practice’s expert support (and even sedation if required) can put your mind – and

body - at complete rest throughout your treatment, resulting in a totally stress-free encounter for all. The award-winning practitioners at Clifton’s aptly named Smile Suite, meanwhile, all work to the principle objective of preserving natural tooth tissue. Smile Suite technicians can reposition existing teeth and, if necessary, recontour and whiten them without cutting into enamel or replacing it with artificial materials. The results not only look natural, but are long-lasting, healthy and relatively maintenance free to boot, while specialised appliances such as invisible braces mean that you can keep hush-hush about your treatment should you want to. When you’re all straightened out, tooth whitening offers the perfect finishing flourish, and a range of facial rejuvenation treatments help to hide unwanted wrinkles and improve the appearance of your lips - treatments that offer broad appeal to an increasing number of people who want to look as good as they feel. If you’re one of the millions of people who face the overnight shift with a set of dentures grinning back at them from the bedside table, the friendly, welcoming Zetland Road Dental Practice can introduce you to some far sweeter dreams. Many people make do with the hassle of removable dentures or living with gaps, but technology to stabilise dentures or carefully constructed implants (titanium screws placed directly into the jaw) can tailor the ideal bespoke implant solution to the individual. Peruse the extensive treatment menu and easy-options payment plans offered at Zetland Road, and wave goodbye to that overnight glass for good. In order to keep your smile at its brilliant best, you should visit your dentist twice a year. Meanwhile, turn these top tips into a routine…
[e
l Brush your teeth at least twice daily and make friends with both floss and fluoride mouthwashes. Floss reaches the nooks and crannies that a toothbrush can’t always access, while mouthwashes contain effective antiseptics that can help tackle bacteria. l replace your toothbrush every two to three months. Worn, dog-eared bristles are no longer effective and can often be a breeding ground for germs, fungus and bacteria. Ask your dentist for advice on brushing effectively. l avoid sugary, fizzy drinks and cut down on sharp, citrus-based fruit juices unless accompanied by food: they have a corrosive effect on tooth enamel. l avoid bad breath by reducing your intake of the usual suspects (onions, garlic) and acids (coffee, citrus), and avoid alcohol-based mouthwashes, which can dry out the sensitive tissue in your mouth. If symptoms persist, consult your dentist. l red wine, coffee and tobacco can all stain tooth enamel. And, with tobacco in particular, that’s the least of the problems it can cause - the only healthy way forward is to stump out the fags altogether.

so that problems can be rectified before crisis point, and being registered with a dental practice is so important. The major reason for avoiding the dentist is fear of what treatment may be in store, but not addressing an area of sensitivity or a broken filling will usually make matters worse. Fortunately, many cavities that feel huge with the tongue are in reality much smaller than imagined and the treatment needed will often be relatively straightforward and less daunting than first thought. Of course, new year resolutions don’t have to be about facing up to health issues - they can be about improving your dental appearance. Tooth whitening is usually the first step with any improvement in a person’s smile, and techniques can produce rapid, dramatic, long-lasting and safe results. On a more involved
level, crowns showing dark tide marks can be restyled with allceramic alternatives, while dark grey amalgam fillings can be rendered invisible, and misplaced or misshapen teeth can be masked with veneers. Zetland Road Dental Practice offer a comprehensive range of

routine and cosmetic treatments and can see any of their registered patients in an emergency within 24 hours. Things won’t fix themselves, but may be a great deal easier to put straight than you think. What’s more, the results can now look better than ever before.

For the past month of festive soirees, you’ve no doubt been putting your hair through the wringer – cruelly coiffuring it into gravity-defying styles. After a season of being deconstructed, diffused, mussed, messed, tangled, teased and treated, surely it’s crying out for some TLC…? Fabulous, healthy hair has an amazing power to attract attention away from post-Christmas bulges and brighten up sallow skin, so January is exactly the time when you should be paying most attention to it. While you’re exercising and eating healthily, your hair will be reaping the rewards of a nutritionally balanced diet and an improved blood supply to the scalp, so make the most of it and take just a few extra steps to make sure your hair is as gorgeous as it can be. What’s more, the spring/summer 2011 catwalk shows have predicted that longer locks are back in vogue, and for this, you need to make sure that your hair is in tip-top condition.

Trends for 2011 As Folio goes to press, the prestigious London British Hairdresser of the Year Award has just been given to SeanHanna’s Skyler McDonald. Her collection was the judge’s choice because of ‘her use of beautiful, natural,

moving hair that’s alluring and attainable’. So that’s it – no more hiding behind short crops or slick updos. And it’s not just women who are going to have to pay extra attention to their tresses. Rachael Lavis, owner of RSR Mens Hair, predicts: “Men will be wearing medium-length hair in 2011, much longer than last year. And the fringe will make a big comeback.” Detox your locks So how do you get your hair into the condition it needs to be in to wear these 2011 styles with confidence? The first rule in January is to give your hair a break, and a detox. Let it stretch its legs and rediscover its true personality. Think about how you want your hair to look and then book in for an MOT at a good salon. Carlo Bruni, owner of Carlo Hair and Beauty, advises that the easiest way to achieve healthy hair is to get a good shampoo and conditioner - for this, he says, you need to ask the experts: “There are too many rubbish products out there that are no good for your hair or scalp. You can find hundreds of shampoos and conditioners in a high-street shop, but who’s going to recommend the best for you, and test it?” Overhaul your tools After you’ve got your basic shampoo and conditioner sorted, have a look at your styling products and tools. Brushes with bent bristles or damaged tongs can pull and snap your hair, so invest in new ones. Wash off dried excess product from your brushes and wipe down straighteners and tongs to allow them to slide easily over your hair without pulling or snagging it. SeanHanna’s Adam Vincent recommends creating a careful daily haircare routine: “After cleansing your hair twice with the correct shampoo, and before applying conditioner, you should then detangle your hair using a Tangle Teezer brush. These really do stop you applying too much stress to your hair. Pat-dry the hair and always use heat protection before blow-drying or using any kind of styling irons.” Tone down your colour Adding colour to your hair is a great way to give it life and make it stand out in a crowd, but make sure you don’t go overboard, says Sarah Grills from Angela Gaudi Hair Design. “Natural is definitely going to be the main focus of 2011, no matter what shade you decide to go,” she tell us. “This year has seen a lot of vibrant red shades, which will be turning into plums and rich mahoganies for 2011. Blonde will also be big, with soft, creamy tones as the main focus. And to keep your hair looking and feeling healthy, we recommend the L’Oreal Professionnel Serie Expert Absolut Repair range of products – they offer excellent support and protection to hair that’s been damaged by heat or colour.”

Over to you So there’s the advice from the experts. But of course, there are plenty of things you can do too to help keep your hair as lustrous as possible. Avoid fad diets and stick to a nutritionally balanced regime to make sure that your body has enough nutrients to support the hair follicle and promote new growth. Remember, too, that stress can prevent blood flow to the scalp, instead making your body direct it to key organs, so make sure you take time to relax, and book in lots of head massages and plenty of exercise. To really make the most of your hair, though, you really need to lean on your hairdresser. “Your relationship with your hairdresser is very important,” says Rachael from RSR Mens Hair. “You should use them to give you the right styling products and treatments and tell you the correct way to use them. They’ll help you to pave the way to healthy hair in 2011.”

New year, new you
Simon Fry with a round-up of health, beauty and wellbeing news MOVERS AND SHAKERS l While being dazzled by those costumes and impressed by the moves, it’s easy to overlook the fact that the professional dancers on Strictly Come Dancing are all extremely athletic. Dancing is, of course, a great way to keep fit – so why not book onto a six-week dance class at Bristol’s Dance Factory and learn some of the Strictly… moves? Ballroom and Latin classes are on offer for adults or children in Clifton or Kingswood: no experience is necessary, and classes can also cater for those who can already dance. Michele Webber, who runs Dance Factory and delivers the classes, has recently partnered Strictly…’s Brian Fortuna in a beginners’ ballroom and Latin dance DVD – it’s currently on sale via Amazon and will be launched internationally this year. Look after your eyesight with Juul and Payne
l Wearers of glasses who have previously suffered from dyslexia and migraines are benefiting from the use of an ‘Intuitive Colorimeter’ at Juul and Payne opticians. The instrument was developed by Professor Arnold Wilkins and the Medical Research Council to logically and sequentially explore colour space in order to find the optimal precision tint to help with perceptual distortions in visual stress. Juul and Payne have received fantastic feedback from people whose lives have been transformed by this technology. Clients have expressed great gratitude at being able to enjoy writing and reading again, with one of them now taking up the chance to study at university as a primary teacher. Still more good news comes via reports of a marked drop in the incidence of age-related macular disintegration experienced by Juul and Payne’s clients - representative of a general reduction across society. In earlier decades, people in their forties, fifties and sixties would typically suffer loss of vision (and sometimes blindness) in the visual field’s centre as a result

of retina damage. Now, evidence from Australia suggests that better retina health is being caused by several diverse factors. Explanations put forward include a reduction in red meat consumption (and the additives previously found in processed meat products), a reduction in passive smoking, and greater UV protection through the use of more effective sunglasses.
