n 1844 the ss Great Britain became the first ship to be photographed. So, almost a century and a half later, it seemed only fitting to come back to this historic location for our ‘Age of Exploration’ bridal shoot. Along with our team of wedding professionals on hand to create these beautiful photos, we had the styling expertise of the Little Wedding Helper, Kirsten Butler.

THE VENUE

With an attentive team, experienced wedding coordinators and stewards well versed in the history and heritage of the venue, the staff of the ss Great Britain will go above and beyond to give you a day to remember. The ss Great Britain’s history is steeped in romance and weddings. The ship was launched by one half of our country’s most romantic and enduring love story, Prince Albert, and many of its earliest passengers were on their way to be married. The enigmatic Captain Grey acted as father of the bride during the countless weddings that took place on board during his service. Jump forward to 2012 and the ss Great Britain is still a stunning location for any wedding. Whether you’re planning a sit down meal or a champagne reception they have a number of rooms and packages to suit your needs. Not only will your guests celebrate your day in one of Bristol’s most unique venues, but they’ll also have the run of the ship with optional guided tours for couples who love the history at its heart. The venue can cater for up to 148 people, with packages including a combination of the ceremony, drinks reception and a three course meal in the stunning dining saloon. With a range of prices and menus on offer, the ss Great Britain echoes the luxury times past without costing nearly as much. If you’d like to know more, the ss Great Britain is holding a wedding open evening on 7th October. The event will run from 4.30pm till 6.30pm and is free.

THE PHOTOGRAPHER

Photographer on the day was Bristol’s own Martin Pemberton. Although his penchant is for photographing couples against the striking backdrop of dilapidated walls and graffiti covered trains, Martin captured these beautiful photographs with exactly the same eye for detail. Personable and engaging, Martin drew our models out of themselves - something he prides himself on doing with every couple he works with. When booking Martin for a shoot, couples are given the chance to ‘try before they buy’. “To make it easier to see if I’m the right photographer for you and your wedding day,” explains Martin, “I offer the ‘suck it and see’ option of booking a pre-wedding shoot with me. If you decide to book me as your wedding photographer I will refund the cost of the engagement session from the wedding package.” Martin grew up watching his dad, camera in hand, itching to have a go. As a teenager his passion was sparked when a photographer visited his youth group and gave him a camera to experiment with, but it was Martin’s wife who bought him his first DSLR and it is her encouragement that has fuelled him to come FOLIO/AUTUMN 2012 5

this far. Although Martin does not exclusively photograph couples on their big day, it’s still touching to see a talent like his blossom from his own wedding.

THE DRESSES AND THE SUIT

Our three stunning dresses and suit were supplied by Anne Harding. We asked for necklines with an impact and all the drama of the high seas with frothing lace and sparking embellishments. The first of our three gowns, by Justin Alexander, boasts a high neckline and floor skimming hem which draws attention to Alice’s lovely figure, while the satin waist proves cummerbunds aren’t just for boys. The ivory gown also features a textured lace trumpet skirt and chapel length train. For our second look – another Justin Alexander creation - we went for a less traditional colour. This gown also has the waist cinching cummerbund and incredible textured details but this time in oyster. What colour could be more appropriate? The beaded sweetheart neckline is finished with metallic lace but it’s the skirt that really catches the eye with its organza bows and lace spiral ruffles. Our final dress, the sweet tea-length creation, is Sincerity for Anne Harding. The neckline, a discreet nod to a certain royal bride, adds just the right amount of lace to this vintage style dress. The light organza skirt was teased by the breeze just like the ships flags and although the gown is also available in full length with a chapel length train, the tea length was perfect for a stroll across the weather deck and messing about by the river. Our groom’s suit, Claverley, was also by Anne Harding. The lightweight mohair suit transitioned perfectly from day to night and pairing the suit with the waistcoat meant Oliver looked every bit the gentleman with or without his jacket. 6 FOLIO/AUTUMN 2012

THE JEWELLERY

Diana Porter is known for her contemporary jewellery, whether it is her own designs or the work of jewellers handpicked to exhibit in her Bristol shop. For the shoot we chose to showcase Diana Porter’s intricate Elements collection featuring the evocative ‘on and on’ discs. All of the jewellery we used picked out details from the ship itself, whether it was the heavy chains found all over the venue, the intricate carvings in the dining room, or the crab claws, blue gems and pearls that added a sense of the sea. The engagement ring, an aquamarine set in white gold with diamond detail, was designed by Diana Porter. The pretty blue stone is a fresh alternative to the classic diamond, while the Elements collection is a modern alternative to wearing pearls. Harriett at Diana Porter said: “The words ‘on and on’ were originally used by Diana Porter to represent eternity. What could be more fitting for a wedding?”

HAIR AND MAKE-UP

Our bride’s look was coordinated by Yasmine Jafari of Tomlinson’s Hairdressing, who teamed metallic sparkle with antique elegance. “I feel it is important to always customize hairstyles to the clients theme,” says Yasmine. “For the shoot we went with a contemporary and romantic ‘Titanic’ feel, combining an elegant finger wave with a modern fish tail braid, as seen in the spring and summer 2012 8 FOLIO/AUTUMN 2012

catwalks. This was then swept into a chic side chignon for a textured yet structured feel. The makeup was kept very simple and dewy, going for an English rose feel, contouring with gold to bring out the green in the models eyes. At Tomlinson hairdressing we pride ourselves on creating unique wedding packages, making sure we adhere to each and every one of our bride’s personal desires. No feeling is more magical and rewarding than being able to be such an important part of our bride’s big day.” Our groom embodied old-school elegance with hair done by Rachael of RSR Men’s Hair, Bristol. To create the style Rachael looked back to the Edwardian era, emulating the swept-back hair favoured by the First Class passengers aboard the Titanic. Rachael kept Oliver’s fringe long but cropped the back. She used all Fudge products - matte hed, matte hed gas for hold and hair cement to fix the style and add some shine.

THE MODELS

Alice and Oliver, our beautiful bridal couple, were on location representing Shoot DHS, an agency run by former model David HillSouch. Shoot DHS has earned its reputation for providing quality models for all sorts of work, including fashion editorial and catwalk. Alice and Oliver were great to work with and made a very realistic bridal party, even bickering like an old married couple before Martin had snapped the first pictures.

THE CAKE

Our cake, with its delicate sugar flowers and muted colour scheme, matched the elegance of the first class dining saloon. Clifton Cakes pride themselves on their ingenuity and versatility, confident they can match your cake to the theme of your big day. Past commissions have included a jewel-bright peacock with cascading tail feathers, a cake covered in minute polka dots with classic ribbon trim and a colourful number with a rainbow of edible flowers. For our shoot we went with classic icing and intricate details but Clifton Cakes are also well known for their chocolate creations that feature undulating waves of chocolate, tightly packed chocolate curls or a single sheet of chocolate elegantly swirled around the cake within. And as if that wasn’t enough, Clifton Cakes have embraced the fashion for individual cakes; not only can they decorate cupcakes with as much skill as their larger cakes, they can wrap them in a chocolate casing that melts in the mouth. Delicious.

THE FLOWERS

Our florist for the day, Tina at Lloyds Flowers, wrapped the pillars of the promenade with ivy, sheer ribbon and added white roses for details. The bouquet, boutonnière and table flowers looked and smelt heavenly. Along with the mixed greenery to give the flowers that wild, just-picked look, Tina included calla lilies, spray roses, cream stocks and veronica. The subdued colours complimented each of our bride’s dresses while the boutonnière picked out the details in the bouquet and the fragrant table arrangements added a sweetness and intimacy to the formal dining saloon. 10 FOLIO/AUTUMN 2012

Tina has noticed a subtle shift from the manicured bouquets of recent years. “Brides today are going for more natural flower arrangements, as if they’ve been freshly picked from the garden,” she explained.

Rebecca Oliver looks at ways to match your dress to your venue

LOCATION, LOCATION, inspiration ith the pressure of creating your perfect day and so much choice available, it can be difficult making a decision on the right gown. If that’s the case, why not be guided by your venue? Use that dream location as a starting point in your search. From the grand to the unconventional, we’re spoilt for choice with venues here in the South West. It may only be the start of the wedding planning process, but once your venue is in place you can really focus on finding that perfect dress.

THE ASSEMBLY ROOMS

Could there be a more romantic setting than a place Jane Austen herself frequented during her time in Bath? The venue consists of the Tea Room, Card Room, Ballroom, Octagon and small Georgian garden. These can be hired singly or combination, meaning that the Assembly Rooms can play host to parties of most sizes. With chandeliers and elegant red carpets, these historical rooms call for an equally dramatic gown. Perhaps you should opt for something that nods to Bath’s Regency heyday, such as this Matthew Williamson peacock feather gown (£3,500 available from Carina Baverstock Couture; pictured left), which provides hints of both the classical and contemporary. The empire line and column shape cleverly echo Bath’s historic architecture, while the exquisite Swarovski embellishment updates the look.

SS GREAT BRITAIN

Brides with a sense of adventure may wish to consider Brunel’s ss Great Britain. This alternative venue, equally rich in history, should guarantee a memorable day. Launched in 1843, she was the world’s first luxury ocean liner, and now, from her waterside location, the ship boasts memorable views across the water to Cabot Tower and the surrounding hills. Ceremonies are held on the Promenade Deck, a beautiful wood-panelled space filled with light. The happy couple and guests then have use of the whole ship, and are free to explore the Weather Deck, First Class Dining Saloon and the Hayward Saloon with its own dance floor. This gorgeous Justin Alexander gown (style number 8465, price £POA available from Anne Harding; pictured above left) will ensure any bride is shipshape and Bristol fashion. The playful tulle layers and Venice lace appliqué detail hint at ocean froth, while the tea length is more practical on deck and leaves the bride free to dance into the night. It’s available in a coffee hue too, for those eschewing ivory. SS GREAT BRITAIN GREAT WESTERN DOCKYARD, GAS FERRY ROAD, BRISTOL BS1 6TY. LITTLE THEATRE CINEMA

Couples opting for an even more offbeat and intimate setting can look to Bath’s Little Theatre Cinema, which dates back to 1935 and nestles snugly in the city centre. The versatile space can accommodate parties of up to either 72 or 171 in the two different screens, and also has a licensed bar and beautiful outside courtyard space. Couples are encouraged to make use of the stage and projection facilities to create a truly personal and unique ceremony. This location, perhaps more than any other, screams vintage and the glamour of old Hollywood. Brides could draw inspiration for their gown from silver screen icons such as Hepburn, Hayworth or Monroe, or take cues, à la the Duchess of Cambridge, from Grace Kelly’s classic lace gown. This beautiful Parma dress by Jenny Packham (£2,980 available from Carina Baverstock Couture; pictured right) ticks all the boxes: timeless elegance, a sense of fun and just a little bit quirky. BRASSERIE BLANC

For those seeking an inner-city venue but who still want a touch of history, consider Brasserie Blanc, Bristol. Housing Raymond Blanc’s restaurant and bar, as well as three separate event spaces, Brasserie Blanc is able to accommodate parties between 20 and 147 people. The central location is ideal, and the restaurant is known for its outstanding food. The décor is elegant but understated, with amazing medieval features that make it such a unique venue. This relaxed location is perfect for a more fashion-forward wedding dress. Brides could opt for something less conventional, perhaps a fishtail, or be daring with a backless gown or much shorter length. Scarlett, a striking tea-length gown from Naomi Neoh’s Love Letters collection available from Carina Baverstock Couture (£1,995 pictured left), has everything a girl could want and more. From the lace-draped shoulders, floral detail at the waist, and the full tea length skirt, this dress will take you from day to night and leave your feet free for stair climbing, and of course, dancing BRASSERIE BLANC THE FRIARY BUILDING, CABOT CIRCUS, BRISTOL, BS1 3DF. MONKTON LEISURE

Set in outstanding surroundings, with immaculate grounds overlooking the Limpley Stoke Valley, Monkton Hospitality can provide an exclusive venue for the perfect wedding day. The two elegant oak-panelled dining halls offer enchanting locations for both the smaller intimate gathering and sumptuous banquet for up to 180 guests. With ornate high ceilings, panelled windows and a beautiful arched entrance doorway, the grandeur of the halls will provide some wonderful photographic opportunities. For a larger occasion, perhaps you could consider a marquee near the cricket pavilion, once voted amongst the top ten most picturesque locations in the United Kingdom by The Times Magazine. This venue calls for a unique gown and what could be more memorable than a bespoke dress by designer Alison Miles? The dress featured here (Price £POA pictured above right) is French Lace over pure silk satin with a chiffon cowl neck and a traditional Bulgarian ‘Pafti’ at the waist tied at the back with silk chiffon. "The advantage of having a dress made is the ability of the designer to incorporate special details like this into the design" explains Alison. OLD DOWN MANOR

Old Down Manor, with its regal stag statue in the grounds and rock royalty history - Mike Oldfield of Tubular Bells fame once owned the property - is a venue fit for a queen. The manor is a truly romantic setting, with luxurious bedchambers, sweeping vistas and stunning landscaped gardens, sure to guarantee a magical day. Brides in grander locations can opt for fuller shapes and longer trains, and a venue as majestic as Old Down Manor demands a dramatic and, perhaps, more traditional silhouette. Naomi Neoh’s Dita gown, available from Carina Baverstock Couture (£2,295 pictured left), would work well in this setting. It’s deliciously feminine, with a bodice of French lace, and is tinted with a subtle hint of blush. The full skirt in floaty chiffon has a sweeping train, making it appropriately romantic for this fairytale location. OLD DOWN MANOR FOXHOLES LANE, TOCKINGTON, BRISTOL BS32 4PG. Annie Campbell looks at the wedding industry’s most enduring gemstone.

D

iamonds have been one of the most enduring choices of precious stone for engagement rings throughout the 20th and 21st centuries. The tradition began in Vienna, in 1477, when Archduke Maximilian of Austria presented his future wife, Mary of Burgundy, with a diamond ring to symbolise their betrothal, and has increased in popularity ever since. But has this tradition run its course? Increasingly, brides-to-be want engagement rings that suit their own individual styles. More and more couples are asking jewellers to design one-off rings made with stones and metals of their own choosing, and when you see a piece like the stunning Eleanor necklace, designed by Catherine Amesbury at Artemis, it’s no wonder why. This crystal and pearl choker proves that jewellery doesn’t have to break the bank in order to add a touch of the extraordinary to your wedding, and who wouldn’t want an engagement ring with a touch of individuality to complement a piece like this on their special day? However, many jewellers now offer less traditional designs and collections that may help diamonds to win back the wandering eyes of all those searching for the perfect engagement ring. Local jeweller Diana Porter’s diamond designs are some of the more unusual on the market. Many of her rings can be made in a variety of metals to suit the customer’s own tastes, and they offer interesting and unusual settings for the nation’s gem of choice. As well as classic, clear diamonds, Diana designs rings set with more unusual brown diamonds, giving tradition a classy twist. Or, if you’re looking for more than sparkling gemstones, you could take a look at her ‘on and on’ collection (featured in our cover shoot), which combines etchings of the phrase ‘on and on’ with her own distinct jewellery designs, to create a quirky take on the classic eternity ring. Hannah Bedford proves that size doesn’t always matter with her beautiful diamond granule rings, designed for Clifton Rocks. This collection includes other pieces that could be worn on your big day to complement that one special ring. Or, if you don’t have the cash to splash out on

platinum or gold, but still want something special, take a look at Shona Carnegie’s stunning silver diary rings. These combine the class of white diamonds with the simplicity of silver, and come in a range of prices that make them perfect for a couple working on a budget. If you prefer a taste of the traditional, but still want to add that special touch to your engagement ring, perhaps consider melting down sentimental jewellery that you no longer wear and have it made into a ring that really matters. Clare Chandler, owner of Clifton Rocks, offers this service to all her clients, and has created some beautiful rings that mean that little bit more to their bridesto-be. And if you like a splash of colour, but still fancy a diamond that will last forever, take a look at Jody Cory’s stunning array of coloured diamond rings. Her white gold and green diamond ring is particularly elegant, and will have people intrigued as to what stone it is you’re really wearing. Of course, this doesn’t mean you have to forsake that beautiful Eleanor choker; diamonds go just as well with pearls as any other precious stone. In fact, they might even be perfect partners! It seems as though Maximilian had the right idea all along: maybe diamonds are forever. CLIFTON ROCKS 100 QUEENS RD, CLIFTON, BRISTOL BS8 1NF T: 0117 9731342 W: WWW. Hannah Chapman dives into the world of surfing in South Wales.

S

ince Europeans first encountered surfing in the 18th century it has grown in popularity as a way of having fun, keeping in shape and enjoying the world around you. Though the sport is most commonly associated with California or Hawaii, surfing is also popular in the UK and the chance to learn might just be closer than you think. South Wales is home to some of the country’s most beautiful shoreline, and less than an hour from Bristol it is the perfect location for land-locked lovers of surf to come and get to grips with their wilder side. Cressey’s Surf Academy introduces surfers of all ages and skill levels to the sport. The academy was founded by South African surfing champion Ingemar Cressey, who has been surfing since he was nine years old, and who has over 20 years’ surfing experience and 12 years’ coaching experience. But what do you do after a day chasing

waves? The answer: enjoy yourself. Vale Resort is a four star retreat surrounded by 650 acres of gorgeous Welsh countryside. As well as its stunning surroundings, Vale Resort is also home to an award winning spa and restaurant, as well as two golf courses. What’s shorter than a honeymoon but just as sweet? Hannah Chapman tells us why the mini moon is no joke.

ou’re in the midst of planning your wedding and the reality of the situation hits you; the photographer needs paying, the venue wants to confirm how large the bar tab is, the bridesmaids are eyeing up the most expensive dresses in the shops and somehow you need to find the money for a lavish holiday for two. It’s enough to scare the pre-wedding tan off anyone but don’t worry, we might just have an idea (or three). Introducing the mini moon. A mini moon is not so different from a honeymoon; you still get to spend time alone with your new husband/wife, you still get to treat yourselves and do things you wouldn’t normally, but the key difference is the location. While for some the thought of a honeymoon will evoke the sights and smells of far flung countries with white sand, blue water and a slowly deepening tan, the mini-moon is all about finding somewhere closer to home where you can enjoy being married for a short time before going back to the daily grind. If the thought of doing without the holiday leaves you feeling cheated, why not plan to take an anniversary trip together to celebrate the first year of being married? It lessens the stress on the run up to the big day and is one less burden on your bank account. In the South West we are blessed with gorgeous landscapes and thriving city environments so whether it is a weekend by the water or a night on the town catching dinner and a show, we might just have what you’re looking for.

SURF AND SPA DOWN SOUTH

The surf and spa break includes one night’s accommodation at the 4* resort, a full Welsh breakfast, lunch, and dinner, surfing tuition and full equipment hire, and full use of Vale Resort’s extensive leisure facilities. The resort is only an hour outside of Bristol and with prices starting from £109pp it’s the perfect mini moon location. BOUTIQUE BATH

Spend a night or two in the city made famous by the romantic novels of Jane Austen and famed for its ancient Roman Bath. You’ll need a hotel that lives up to your expectations, which is where The Queensberry Hotel comes in. Named after the 8th Marquees of Queensberry, famous for writing the rules for boxing and being sued by Oscar Wilde for libel, the Queensberry hotel is a charming mix of times past and luxury modern convenience. Priding themselves on their excellent wine list, original cocktails and exciting menu the hotel also encourages guests to step out and enjoy what more is on offer. On arrival ask to see The Bath Voice, a semi-secret service that highlights the best that Bath has to offer including champagne hot air balloon flights over the city, or treatments at the award winning Thermae Spa. THE BATTLE of the

eco bride

From wedding fairs to fair-mined metals, brides in the South West are winning the war to make weddings more environmentally responsible. Hannah Chapman steps up to the front line to find out more.

F

or the ethically minded planning a wedding can be a minefield. Decisions that would be so easy for some become considerably harder when taking into account the environmental and social impact your choices will have. We’ve pulled together some eco inspiration from venues to favours, and with more and more companies realising that going green is the way forward, planning an ethical wedding is getting easier every day. The Longhouse is a venue in Somerset with a strong stance when it comes to reducing its impact on the environment. Not only does it have its own sustainable power supply, rain water flushes the toilets, it has planted over 5000 trees, heating either comes from a ground source or from burning the venue’s own wood, it uses eco-logically friendly cleaning products and local produce wherever possible. If that wasn’t enough it recycles as much as possible. If you’re worried about the ethics of the meat industry then the Longhouse is happy to provide both vegetarian and vegan catering options. Sounds good, doesn’t it? Well it should do - the Longhouse has won a number of awards for the efforts to minimise its carbon footprint. Why not consider hiring vintage tableware for the big day from a local supplier? Bristol Vintage is a vintage china supplier with a definite green streak. “We strive to be as ‘green’ as we can at Bristol Vintage, from using recycled paper for wrapping our orders to washing up with eco-

friendly liquid,” says Ali Cook, the owner of the company. “The whole idea of re-using vintage crockery embraces the recycling concept and it’s great to see once-loved cups and saucers being enjoyed by a new generation. When we have breakages we don’t throw them out or even put them in the recycling bin - we pass them on to Jackie Smith, who makes beautiful mosaic mirrors and other items - giving them another life!” Jewellery designer Diana Porter is a firm advocate for ethical jewellery. Not only does she use Fairtrade and Fairmined gold where possible in her work, Diana has visited mines in Bolivia to experience the working conditions first hand. Although ethically produced gold has a higher retail price, between 10-15% higher than the current market price, knowing that the ring on your finger hasn’t endangered lives and has given hard working people a fair wage is worth the extra money. On her website Diana Porter says that her aim “is to work with the UK jewellery industry to influence the way that precious metals are produced, so that ethical production becomes the norm.” Hopefully that change will come sooner rather or later. For those of you who love the bustle and excitement of a wedding fair but want to know that each of the supplier shares your ethical stance then the eco wedding on Saturday 3rd November should be added to your diary. Not only is the event a first for the South West, it’s also being held at riverstation, one of Bristol’s most actively ethical venues. This

venue’s efforts to go green include a bee hive on its ‘green roof’, bottling its own filtered water, using seasonal produce and biodegradable bar sundries, planting trees in the restaurant’s orchard and using them to make delicious apple juice and elderflower syrup, recycling its cooking oil, encouraging visitors to use its bike parking and, wait for it, boat mooring. Phew – that does sound like a lot! But there’s more. On the day itself there will be countless like-minded suppliers, including the online wedding invites of Rachel Goodchild. There will also be fashion shows and workshops to satisfy even the craftiest of brides. The fair is being organised as a response to you, the brides of the South West, who are keen to use local suppliers and seasonal food and flowers. Let’s hope this is the first of many eco wedding fairs in the region.

A TOUCH OF

Venue stylist Kirsten Butler, aka The Little Wedding Helper, looks to nature for this season’s must-have styling.

W

hatever your budget I truly believe that it doesn't cost a ridiculous amount of money to create a stunning, personal and heartfelt celebration. It can be very easy to get sucked into the wedding bubble of thinking you need everything you see in the magazines or at a wedding fair for your wedding to be amazing, but it’s the details that really count. Consider what is important to both of you because that is what your day should reflect in its style and feel. It will be this and the memories you consequently create that your guests will remember long after the leaves have changed their colours. These are my top tips for styling a wedding day that will be as fun and fabulous as you are! Autumn is a beautiful time of year for a wedding and brings a harvest of flavours, colours and textures that are perfect for a heartfelt and beautiful celebration with family and friends. One only has to look around at nature itself for ideas and inspiration to create an intimate look and feel to your special day. Create a feast for the senses by combining warm orange, deep raspberry and rich caramels and browns with lots of candlelight to welcome your guests. For a more modern and luxurious look, combine rich plums and pinks with gold details to create a sophisticated and warm feel to your reception. Your chosen venue will help with the style you can create, and in the autumn months what could be cosier than a rustic barn or an old country manor with roaring log fires? To co-ordinate your table setting, decide on where the focus will be. Is it a particular colour, flowers, texture? Once you have this clearly in your mind it is easier to find the other elements to complete your look and feel. Remember that you don't have to go over the top with too much, as keeping tables elegant and simple means your guests' eyes are drawn to the details more.

FOR THE DIY BRIDE... • Write your name places with gold pen on pressed leaves. • Collect conkers to fill the bottom of your vases of autumnal blooms. • Get together with family and make homemade jams or chutneys for your wedding favours. • Fill jam jars with tea lights and wrap ribbon or lace around them. • Slices of logs make fantastic 'plates' for your centrepieces to sit on. • Cut out the top of apples and add a tea light to create unique lighting on your tables or around the venue. • Carve out butternut squash or pumpkins to hold your flowers (have a look on my Pinterest 'Autumn wedding ideas' board!). • Ask guests to contribute towards a pudding table by bring a homemade cake or dessert.

FOR THE MODERN BRIDE... • Hire coloured or patterned linen for your tables to add depth and texture. • Add gold charger plates and coloured glassware to your table. • Fill your venue with large lanterns to create a cosy, intimate atmosphere. • Twine ivy and flowers around candelabra. Mini apple cake pops or toffee apple favours for each guest to enjoy. • Supply a pashmina for every female guests for when it get chillier in the evening. • Give individual tree saplings as thank you presents – a gift that will keep on growing! ow that many couples are ‘wellestablished’ - for want of a better word - by the time they mosey down the aisle, a lot of people are finding that they no longer need the toaster, bed-sheets and canteen of cutlery that were the traditional wedding presents. Instead, if you already have a fully equipped home together, a wedding is a chance to get some of the little extras that you could never quite justify buying for yourself. Or that you could justify, but are even more fun if they come with love from your friends and family. This shift towards wedding gifts that add to your home rather than make a home has resulted in a rising number of people keeping a wedding wish list at iota Bristol, the must-shop Gloucester Road boutique that describes itself as the place where there’s a present waiting to happen. Blushing brides don’t come here for kettles or 10.5 tog duvets: instead, they’re listing snap-together MDF deer heads, exotic Moroccan fairy lights and iota’s unique light bulb vases. Other popular choices include one of the stylish array of teapots, a chopping board illustrated with 1940s anatomy charts and brightly coloured Avoca lambswool blankets,

NEWS THE personal TOUCH S

ue Bide has been running The Bridal Make-up and Hair Room for 16 years and during that time hundreds of brides have passed through her hands. She doesn't have a website as she prefers the human touch. Brides come to her house for a coffee to look through her portfolio and discuss their wedding and ideas. There is no obligation whatsoever after this meeting. Once the bride confirms her booking a test day is arranged about two to three weeks before the wedding. This will include any bridesmaids and mother of the bride who may also be having a test day. This can take up to about four hours depending how many people are involved but it's a fun time. At the end of the test day make-up calls are given to everybody for the big day and the scene is set. You can’t work in hair and makeup for 16

You’ve got to be in it to win it. Visit the website for more details.

years without picking up some tips. “Bridal make-up should be soft and subtle,” says Sue. “Avoid too many dark colours as the bride will be wearing white or cream and any dark colours on the face will stand out and be a focal point. When thinking of hairstyles take into consideration the neckline of the dress, the jawline (very important) and whether it will be windy if the bride is going to have loose hair.” On the day in question Sue arrives and within half an hour the first hair and make-up candidate is sitting in her chair. The big day starts. Last to be done will be the bride and after Sue has fixed her veil and everyone's fascinators, laced-up dresses etc. she waves them goodbye, packs away her hair and makeup kit, and another bride says: “I do!” THE BRIDAL MAKE-UP AND HAIR ROOM FFI: 01225 444769, SUEBIDE@AOL.COM
