A quintessentially American Story Rural Texas, 1909. Haskell Harelik, a nineteen-year-old Russian émigré, arrives at the port of Galveston, Texas. He is far from his native land and struggling to adapt. Religion meets religion, culture meets culture, fear meets fear, and love meets love.
Letter from the FESTIVALE CHAIR:
2022 Romanza Members
The Romanza Board of Directors welcomes everyone to our ELEVENTH Romanza Festivale of Arts and Culture. We are especially excited this year, because we have returned to the reality of a full schedule of incredible events. HOORAY! St. Augustinians believe that our small city is the cultural epicenter of the First Coast. Not only is heritage paramount in this “Ancient City” but arts and culture have thrived since Don Pedro Menéndez brought Spanish court musicians with him to settle this new colony in 1565. Henry Flagler continued this rich cultural heritage when he built his grand hotels and filled them with the finest art and performers.
“Harelik’s irresistible comedydrama is one of the sweetest, coziest plays imaginable.” —Houston Post
This is Haskell Harelik’s story... and our story. MAY 6, 7, 8 and 13,14,15 at The Waterworks Building
Romanza Festivale opens on April 29 with a performance of “Trouble in Tahiti”, an opera by Leonard Bernstein and closes on May 15 with a show of delightful songs from Broadway entitled “With a Song in My Heart”. The two plus weeks in between are full of wonderful experiences ranging from three Musicales, seven Chamber Music concerts, jazz, solo acts, drama, storytelling, concerts from our large performing groups and even a terrific Kaleidoscope of Dance. This booklet contains all the information you need to attend these events and almost all are FREE! We know you will love being in St. Augustine! Explore our city, dine in our cafes and restaurants, visit our shops, galleries, historic sites and museums and discover FESTIVALE - a cavalcade of beautiful music, compelling theater, outstanding art and exquisite dancing - presented in the midst of the nation’s oldest city.

Our main event is the grassroots, community collaboration “St. Augustine’s Romanza Festivale of Music & The Arts”. Our “St. Augustine Celtic Music & Heritage Festival” is a celebration of the culture and heritage of “America’s Oldest Celtic City”. In 2022 we presented some of the top Celtic bands in the world.

Romanza events provide opportunities for Partner organizations and regional artists to perform and present in front of large, diverse festival audiences. Partners produce their own events, pay their own costs, set their own prices and keep all their revenue. Lisa Lockhart & Friends in “Trouble in Tahiti” Romanza Festivale 2022 will kick off with a showcase of talent in a production of the famous opera by Leonard Bernstein, “Trouble in Tahiti” on Friday evening at Trinity Hall @Trinity Parish. Join us for Leonard Bernstein’s quirky yet poignant one-act, seven-scene operatic satire about the American dream, life in “Suburbia” and an unhappily married couple struggling to find their way back to each other. The composer and renowned conductor Leonard Bernstein is well known for his major works West Side Story, Wonderful Town and Candide, among other compositions. This one-act opera, starring Regina Torres and Lloyd Reshard, is a delightful snapshot of Bernstein and his music.
The premier artists from Duo Beaux Arts and Duo Formosa plus other musicians will present a varied musical program featuring the music of Romanza President, Albert Syeles. The program will include not only five chamber works by Mr. Syeles, but also music by composers Faure, Hsiao, Wieniawski, Ravel, Sarasate and Chabrier. Mr. Syeles is an accomplished amateur composer. His Rhapsody for Violin and Orchestra was nominated at the 2016 “Views of the World Film and Music Festival” in Montreal and five of his chamber works are presented this evening. He is Romanza’s co-founder, President and Board member. Mr. Syeles also serves as Public Relations director for Romanza’s St. Augustine Celtic Music & Heritage Festival, St. Patrick Day Parade, and St. Augustine’s Romanza Festivale of Music & the Arts. He is also the founder and President of the EpiCentre Alliance, a consortium of a dozen arts, organizations, planning to build a new performing arts center tentatively called The Shell in St. Augustine.

Mama Blue’s Concert Special for Moms – and Everyone! Returning to Romanza is like coming home for Mama Blue! The Jacksonville native has planted seeds in St. Augustine, and the musical fruit is sweet! Choosing to take “a road less traveled,” by keeping close to her roots and community, she has blazed a “Heartfelt Highway”, with original music, emboldened by sharing her vulnerabilities and ours. Though the pandemic has taken its toll, Mama Blue still manages to press on with honors such as Best of the Beaches Female Vocalist in 2020. When the coveted Porchfest Music Festival in Jax was cancelled due to Covid, she and her bandmates rallied to put on a Porchfest Party for her fan family, which was a testament to the power of community! Humanity is her family and the social forces that influence our lives, influence her music. She continues to push past barriers, seen and unseen through her original songs of friendship, perseverance, forgiveness and the perfection in our imperfections. Mama Blue Live is an experience you won’t want to miss, at Lewis Auditorium! 7

T
he EpiCentre Alliance is working to build “The Shell at St. Augustine” a new type of WorldClass Multi-Venu/Muli-Use Performing and Visual Arts Center. It is unique because it is driven by input and advice from performing arts groups with consideration of the requiremements and aspirations of the performing arts community. One of the most significant aspects of The Shell at St. Augustine is that it is a multi-use facility by design, which will enable it to be self-sustaining and profitable once completed. The Shell will have three performance venues which can be operated simultaneously and will have five non-performance business models all under the same roof. These non-performance businesses include restaurants, banquet and conferences facilities, rehearsal space and many others. The profits from these other activities are used to subsidize venue rentals to keep them affordable for the local Arts community; and to provide services such as marketing, accounting, and fundraising to member non-profits. It’s being set up as a partnership allowing for both an ROI for investors, and reliable, stable performance opportunities for the member organizations. This new Business Model was inspired by local performing arts groups in St. Augustine Florida that banded together to form the EpiCentre Alliance. Their common vision is based on the need of local performance venues and exposure to be sustainable and grow. The Shell at St. Augustine is anticipated to cost approximately $100 million to build complete with auditorium, full theater and black box theater, retail spaces, a rooftop restaurant, banquet and conference halls, office space and arts academy with rehearsal halls. We are looking for like-minded visionaries to join our cause as donors, investors, advisors, and consultants to make this happen. For more information contact Albert Syeles, EpiCentre Alliance President at asyeles@gmail.com

Bluegrass was influenced by Welsh, Scottish, Appalachian and English traditional musical styles. Grass Menagerie was formed five years ago for audiences desiring the bluegrass feel, but with an added factor – variety! The instrumentation lends itself to the strict bluegrass rooted music, but the music selection takes it to another level by including jazz, pop, rock and covers of country music.

Meet the Heart of Romanza Festivale It takes a lot of people collaborating to present dozens of events over 17 days to create Romanza Festivale, but it takes a force of nature to plan, coordinate, create a schedule, find venues, work the budget and make it all run smoothly. That force of nature is Kathleen Vande Berg. A native of Iowa, Kathleen graduated from college with a degree in Applied Music, Organ Performance with minors in music education and English. For 30 years she taught in all educational levels from preschool to college in New Jersey, New York, Virginia, Georgia and Florida. Since retiring from the White Plains, NY Public Schools in 2003, she has been active in the cultural life of St. Augustine. Kathleen and her husband, Dr. James Vande Berg, are residents of the Westminster St. Augustine community where she serves as Chair of the PlayReaders Committee, is a member of the Social Committee and is currently presenting a series
of organ recitals during the Lenten/Easter season. She was named the 2020 Volunteer of the Year for Westminster. Kathleen conducts the St. Augustine Chamber Singers, accompanies the North Florida Women’s Chorale and serves as Music Director and Organist at St. Cyprian’s Episcopal Church. As Chair of the Romanza Festivale of Arts and Culture for the last eight years, Kathleen has planned this year’s Festivale, featuring over 35 events. She also serves on the Board of the Epicentre Alliance for the Performing Arts as secretary. She is the recipient of the ROWITA award, was an EWLI International Women’s Day honoree and knighted by the Menorcan Easter Society for outstanding community service.
