Sea Turtle Season Words by Vincent Dalessio

According to the Florida Wildlife Commission, only one in 1,000 sea turtle hatchlings mature to adults. We’re in the heart of sea turtle nesting season in Northeast Florida, and turtle nests and hatchlings have been spotted all over the beaches. According to the Jacksonville Beaches Sea Turtle Patrol, around 100 nests have already been counted along our coastline, including over 90 loggerheads and a few leatherbacks, the largest sea turtle in the world that can measure as long as six feet and weigh up to half a ton. With summer in full swing, people are flocking to the beaches in droves. Sea turtles usually hatch and nest under the cover of darkness when beaches see the least human activity, but it's not uncommon to come across turtles hatching during the day. If you happen to come across a turtle nest or baby sea turtles waddling their way into the shore break, here are a few tips to help keep these creatures safe, given that every species of sea turtle in our coastal waters is on the vulnerable or endangered list. Despite baby sea turtles being the cutest thing your eyes have ever graced, do not pick up, touch or even approach them. When turtles hatch, they “imprint” on the sand, meaning, they leave oils behind so they know where to come back to when they’ve reached sexual maturity (20-30 years later) to lay their own eggs. On top of this, baby turtles have extremely fragile bodies with a white pouch on their bellies, holding around three days worth of food, that can easily rupture if handled incorrectly. Do not use flash photography or shine lights on adult or adolescent turtles. Baby turtles crawl in the direction of the closest white light (which is why most beachside towns are lined with colored lights rather than white ones), and they can become easily confused. Instead, use red lights if you need some light for your late night beach combing. Check your sunscreen! Many sunscreens contain chemicals, like oxybenzone and octinoxate, that contribute to ocean acidification and harm the habitats of turtles. Read the labels and only use mineral-based sunscreens, like those from Sun Bum or similar brands. If you see an injured turtle on the beach or something appears to be wrong with it, do not touch it and contact the Beaches Sea Turtle Patrol at 904-613-6081.

Shelter in Place Words & photos by Janie Day

The current installation at the Corner Gallery is unlike any I’ve ever seen before. You don’t stand in a room looking at framed paintings on the wall. Instead, you become immersed into Erin Kendrick’s colorful and distorted maze of textures and objects. This multi-sensory installation titled “Shelter in Place” forces you to navigate your way around large brightly painted panels depicting various scenes and symbols of Black women and girls’ experience. You sift your fingers through the sand in the sandbox as the eyes plastered on the wall stare you down. You pass through dangling strings of beads and are met with warped mirrors that reveal words on the opposite wall, a quote from Zora Neale Hurston: “It’s no use of talking unless people understand what you say.” Your eyes are compelled to examine every part of the room: from the tall white wall covered in hands of various gestures to the money shoe prints on the floor. Each corner you turn brings you to a new object to interact with, consider and interpret—a seesaw or a swing made from a black woman’s hair. This installation is an experience--one that represents how Black women and girls navigate, find safety, and survive in the spaces they inhabit by using verbal and non-verbal language. Kendrick utilizes elements of mazes, playgrounds, and funhouses, fully incorporating the viewer as a part of the installation. I suggest that you go experience this installation yourself at the Corner Gallery in the Jesse Ball DuPont Center sometime before August 3rd.

“Public art claiming to represent our collective memory is just as often a work of historical erasure and political manipulation,” novelist Zadie Smith wrote in The New York Review about Walker’s work. “It is just as often the violent inscription of myth over truth, a form of ‘over-writing’—one story, overlaid and thus obscuring another—modeled in three dimensions.” Walker turns this “over-writing” on its head, overlaying her own history atop archival imagery. In “Exodus of Confederates From Atlanta” from Harper’s Pictorial History of the Civil War (Annotated), 2005, she prints woodblock silhouettes of enslaved men and women over photographically enlarged plates from an 1868 compilation of Civil War illustrations, originally published in Harper’s Magazine. Walker’s “Cut To The Quick” is hard: It hurts to be immersed in so much violence. But it is a necessary component of understanding the <true> history of our nation. As the fight for unwriting the false narrative laid upon us by political institutions continues, it is not common in our age of division and misinformation to sit between walls of truth. Art makes space for a vessel of veracity as it has for many years. I’ll leave you with a excruciating memory from Harriet Jacobs, a Black writer born into slavery. “Even the little child, before she is 12 years old, will become prematurely knowing in evil things. Soon she will learn to tremble when she hears her master’s footfall. She will be compelled to realize that she is no longer a child.”

“If God has bestowed beauty upon her, it will prove her greatest curse” - Harriet Jacobs

“Cut to the Quick” will be on display at MOCA through Oct. 2.

Femme Fire Books Words & photos by Molly Britt

What began as a fun hobby for Vanessa Nicolle in 2020 has turned into a brick-and-mortar dream come true for book lovers who are passionate about diversity and inclusion. Nicolle started Femme Fire Books as a way to “celebrate diversity and encourage reading for all.” You may wonder, what’s so different about this bookstore? Nicolle’s shop is stocked with books written by women and people of color who have been marginalized in the publishing industry in the past. Femme Fire Books is a way to raise the voices of those who have felt silenced. “Representation matters, and I felt as a Filipino-American woman I was not very well represented in literature spaces. When I went to the bookstore, it was quite hard to find books written by Filipino-American authors, let alone Asian-American authors…so I wanted to create a space where you wouldn’t have to search so far and wide for that,” said Nicolle. Before and during the start up of her brand, Nicolle wasn’t able to find other businesses like hers. She eventually found motivation in Bel Canto Books in Long Beach, California and Yu and Me Books in New York City’s Chinatown, among others, to continue bringing voices to those who haven’t had one in the past. One thing to note is anyone is welcome here. While she does spotlight diverse cultures and people, Nicolle wants readers to know this bookstore is for all. Femme Fire Books’ offerings include poetry, non-fiction, fantasy, romance and children’s books. Have too many books to read at home and forcing yourself to stop buying more until you read them (I try and fail at that)? Femme Fire Books also has unique stickers— insert adorable Stranger Things stickers here—and mugs too. Nicolle even welcomes suggestions for those who think a new book should be added to her stock. Being a small business owner, Nicolle understands how hard it can feel to be seen and heard. She encourages others to keep going, noting there are people supporting you, even if you don’t notice them. “Being your authentic self and putting that into your brand will carry its own weight,” Nicolle said. So, looking for a new book? Check out Femme Fire Books in Riverside. Men, women and anyone in between are encouraged to visit and explore a new world in each book. You can also check out my favorite shelf “Blind Date With a Book” because the fun is in the surprise.

IN CONVERSATION WITH LEE BRICE On a warm, sunny, morning last month, I was all set up at my desk to do a Zoom interview with country music superstar Lee Brice. The clock struck 10, then 10:01,10:02 and finally 10:06. This was strange to me as there is usually a handler involved who communicates with me first and then puts the artist on. They aren’t generally late with these calls as typically I’m not the only one waiting to do an interview. This morning was different. I looked down at my muted phone and saw that “Nashville” was calling. I picked up the phone and said, “Hello, this is Rob.” The voice on the other end said, “Is this Rob Nicholson with Folio?”. I said, “Yes, it is”. He said, “Rob, this is Lee Brice. I know we have an interview this morning, but I’ve somehow lost the link.” Brice, who was calling from his farm near Nashville, was handling his own publicity this morning, as he wanted to get out in the field to hang out with his kids. When you look at Brice’s tour schedule, you’ll see that he’ll meet his tour on a Wednesday or Thursday of a given week and play through until Saturday or Sunday. Then he will fly home to his family for a couple of days during each week. In the attached video interview, you will see how Lee walks the tight rope of balancing a very successful career with home and family. Lee Brice will be at the St. Augustine Amphitheatre on Aug. 12 and he’s bringing Michael Ray (married to Carly Pearce) and is touring on his hit song “Whiskey and Rain” as well as 21-year-old Jackson Dean, who is touring on his wildly successful debut hit song, “Don’t Come Lookin” which is featured in the smash hit television show 1883. When listening to and watching Lee Brice perform, I’d always thought that he must be a really nice guy in the country music industry. After meeting him and talking to him, he is.

We sat down with Erik to learn more.

LIVING A LIFE OF SERVICE TO HIS COMMUNITY AND HIS COUNTRY

How do you think about service as it relates to your role as a Comfort Advisor?

Erik Colquitt, of Snyder AC, reflects on his 20-year career of service in the HVAC industry following his time as an

I love my job. Every day I get to help people, there’s nothing better. Serving customers in this industry really boils down to education- educating customers on the best decision for them. First it’s about listening to the client’s needs, then

it becomes about coaching and teaching customers so that they can make the right decision for their needs and priorities.

How has your time in the Army helped you in your residential HVAC career? Well, I think it’s helped me in numerous ways. Firstly, would have to be the

importance of being a technical expert in what you do. If you can’t maintain and

manipulate your rifle and your equipment to the highest proficiency, you are failing. The same thing in the HVAC industry- you must be the best with your

tools and equipment or you’re doing the customer a disservice. Secondly, being part of team. Every company is a team. Poor communication or poor teamwork will end up in problems for the most important people, our customers. And lastly,

understanding the importance of serving others. In the HVAC world your job is

to serve the customer and listen to their needs. A lot of comfort advisors try to over-sell or not really address customers need- that’s bad service and a recipe for failure.

What has helped you have such success in the industry? During my time in this industry, I have learned that patience is a true virtue. One must take the time to find the root of the problem and find the solution. It’s important to slow down when diagnosing a problem or recommending a solution. The St. Augustine Amphitheatre earns headliner status in Pollstar Magazine The concert industry looks to make a strong comeback in 2022, and the St. Augustine Amphitheatre is leading the way according to industry-leading publication, Pollstar Magazine. The publication’s 2022 Mid-Year Ticket Sales Report ranks St. Augustine Amphitheatre No. 1 in the United States and No. 2 in the world based on tickets sold from Jan. 1 to June 27, 2022. The St. Augustine Amphitheatre has a history of ranking as a top venue, but this most recent ranking is due to the venue’s record-breaking number of ticketed events and overall sales. Since the start of 2022, The Amp hosted 39 ticketed events and welcomed 106,646 guests. In 2019, the last full year of live music prior to the pandemic, The Amp hosted 30 ticketed events and welcomed 74,226 guests at the mid-year point, earning the No. 2 spot in the country and No. 3 in the world. Based on this latest report, The Amp came in second in the world behind the Sidney Myer Music Bowl in Melbourne, Australia by 20,384 tickets. In the U.S.,The Amp bested Red Rocks Amphitheatre, selling 49,223 more tickets than the world-renowned venue. “We knew we were having a strong year, and we just assumed that most, if not all, venues were seeing similar record-setting numbers,” said Gabriel Pellicer, general manager of The St. Augustine Amphitheatre and Ponte Vedra Concert Hall. “That being said, we didn’t necessarily think we’d be first in the country, let alone nearly double the sales of outdoor venues like Red Rocks Amphitheatre with 57,423 patrons. We’re very proud.” Since the start of the 2022 season, the St. Augustine Amphitheatre has hosted a variety of renowned artists including Grammy Award-winning bluegrass phenom Billy Strings, critically-acclaimed indie-rock artist Phoebe Bridgers, comedian Sebastian Maniscalco, emerging indie singer-songwriter Rex Orange County, Grammy Award-winning R&B artist Leon Bridges and American-rock group Widespread Panic. Looking ahead, the St. Augustine Amphitheatre will close out 2022 with a strong lineup of performances by artists such as Buddy Guy & John Hiatt (Aug. 6), Ringo Starr and His All-Starr Band (Sept. 15), Jack White (Sept. 19), Earth, Wind & Fire (Sept. 27), Bonnie Raitt (November 12) and more. I WAS TIRED OF LIVING WITH MY FIBROMYALGIA PAIN Fibromyalgia has been difficult to treat and even more difficult to understand, UNTIL NOW! Dr. Turpin provides patients with much needed relief from Fibro symptoms!

If you're suffering from Fibromyalgia, you understand this sentiment all too well. Local Jacksonville resident Kate R. found herself at a turning point when she noticed her diagnosis had started to take a toll on her marriage.

"I was angry all the time because of all the things I couldn't do anymore because of my Fibromyalgia. That anger cycled through depression and affected everyone around me, my husband more than anyone. It made our lives miserable." Fibromyalgia affects the entire body. To make things complicated it affects everyone's body a little differently. To make things even more complicated, those effects can change on a daily basis. Sometimes you're plagued with widespread muscle pain and fatigue, and other days it's a headache and heightened sensitivity to touch.

"I could barely stand to have the light weight of bedsheets touching me, much less a hug from my husband." explains Kate. This is what it's like to suffer from Fibromyalgia. Symptoms make everyday life incredibly difficult. Mundane, daily tasks are nearly impossible. And too often, these symptoms are only made worse because practitioners find it difficult to understand and even more troublesome to treat. It's characterized by widespread pain in muscles and tissues rather than inflammation of the joints.

Then your primary care doctors suggest dietary changes, pain linaments and prescription medications to the point where your life is no longer ruled by Fibromyalgia. It's now ruled by difficult routines and pill regimens that are supposed to aid in avoiding flare ups.

Kate put it this way, "My life was no longer my own." Eventually, Kate did her own research and discovered that acupuncture can improve the quality of life in Fibro patients. Determined to find the best, she discovered Riverplace Acupuncture Integrative Health led by Dr. Jann Turpin. Dr. Turpin has been successfully treating difficult to manage, chronic pain cases for almost 12 years. She uses the time tested science of acupuncture and integrates it with modern medical advancements that encourage healing and recovery. Acupuncture is a form of Chinese medicine that is commonly used to reduce various forms of pain. Acupuncture works by reducing inflammation, stimulating the release of endorphins and offers much needed symptom relief for Fibromyalgia. Then Dr. Turpin skillfully layers other non invasive therapies like ATP Resonance Biotherapy™ and O3 Regenerative Therapy™ for amplified, long-lasting results.

"I feel like a new person. My husband comes with me to my appointments. He spends most of it thanking Dr. Jann for giving him back the woman he married. And for the first time since we moved here, one of my neighbors told me I looked good! It's a miracle she treated my Fibro, I don't know how else to explain it." If you're looking for a doctor and a practice who not only understands your diagnosis but also has a proven solution for chronic pain, look no further than Riverplace Acupuncture Integrative Health (RAIH).

Kate describes RAIH almost as enthusiastically as she does their treatments. "I love it here!"
