A1A is Not a Freeway Molly Britt
It’s a road known nationally as Florida’s “Scenic and Historic Coastal Byway.” As you drive along A1A through the Beaches and into St. Augustine, you get a perfect view of the coast with some of the most serene views in North Florida However, there’s a darker side to this famed road. According to the Jacksonville Beach Police, there is a greater amount of speeding and motor vehicle accidents on A1A (also referred to as Third Street by locals) than anywhere else at the Beaches. If you were to search “car accidents on A1A in Jacksonville,” the first links to come up all describe the same thing: fatal car accidents. We know speeding and distracted driving happens on more than just this state road, but here’s the issue: A1A is not the highway everyone treats it as. There are traffic lights, stop signs and crosswalks that some drivers seem to disregard. On Oct. 13, 2021, for example, an accident took place on A1A near the corner of Fourth Avenue North in Jacksonville Beach, causing the death of Theodore Hudson, a passenger on a motorcycle involved in the collision. On the same day, it was reported two fatalities occurred after a van heading south on A1A hit an oncoming vehicle in the north lane early that morning. A month prior to that, a pedestrian was in critical condition after being hit by a car on A1A. Earlier in the year, a woman was killed after a three-car crash occurred on the same road. These tragic stories are only the tip of the iceberg, however. The frequency with which serious accidents occur on A1A can be attributed to several factors. The lighting is very poor, and the road is surrounded by greenery, both of which significantly affect visibility at night. Speeding is also an issue, especially in areas with a speed limit of 35. Non-vehicular traffic including pedestrians, cyclists, skateboarders and runners, provides another difficulty for navigating down A1A at the Beaches. In Ponte Vedra Beach, the speed limit picks up slightly, but drivers just go that much faster or weave through traffic, often without respecting crosswalks and traffic lights. South of Ponte Vedra, as A1A gets darker and more difficult to navigate, they seem to speed up even more. So, next time you decide to take the scenic route, pay extra attention to your surroundings, obey traffic signals and stick to the speed limit because it just might save a person’s life, maybe even your own.

WHAT TO WATCH 2022 Coming Attractions Harry Moore
After another year of depressed ticket sales, Hollywood is hoping that 2022 will see a return to business as usual. With a steady drip of big budget and high concept films on the way, including several Batmen, two different Tom Cruise sequels and a re-imagining of Buzz Lightyear, studios are betting that audiences are eager to get back into theaters. Streaming services also plan on making major waves in movies, as both Netflix and Apple are slated to release their biggest films yet. Here is a preview of what we can expect to see over the year.

“So I'm talking to the owner, and I'm like, what's the name of the boat? And he says, ‘Second Wind’ and I just choked. When I was in high school, I lost my mom to lung disease. It was my freshman year and then we had like all these bracelets made when she was sick that said ‘second wind’ talking about wind in her lungs. Something she always instilled in me, my siblings and our family was that you don't get your second wind until you've given everything. And that's emotional, physical, spiritual, like, you have to give up everything. And then you're met with that second wind, like the runner's high,” Elliott explained. Elliott has found serious purpose on this journey to the starting line and continually emphasized the importance of being present. He explained it like this, “Every step I've taken towards this race I've gotten closer to all these amazing things. Friendships have reconnected or new ones have started. People talk about how inspired they have been by and how much their lives have changed because of me attempting this. I've met so many people that I now will love for the rest of my life, and I think each time I've stepped out of my comfort zone to get closer to this, the universe has really stepped up, and it's really showing me that this is what I'm supposed to do. So I guess the motivation is that I'm supposed to do it.” Elliott and I talked extensively about his inspirations like Paulo Coehlo’s The Alchemist, Robin Knox Johnston, the first person to ever perform a non-stop circumnavigation sail around the world, and Jeff Johnson and Yvon Chourinard with their pilgrimages to Patagonia but Bernard Moitissier to be his greatest. Moitissier’s The Long Way, a memoir of his experience in the ’68 Golden Globe race, taught Elliott about how this race can change the way you view the world. The one thing all of these stories have in common is that the journey is much more important than the destination. “There's days where I'm just like grinding fiberglass in here busting my frickin’ knuckle on something stupid or whatever. I'm just like, What am I doing? Like, I’m so far away from my financial goals. It's like, why am I even trying? I think that's life, you don't just have an idea and change, so you’re set. You have to keep reevaluating, you have to keep staying present and keep refocusing things,” he explained. Elliott has truly embraced every hiccup, shortcoming and success in his journey thus far. From pouring blood, sweat and tears into his vessel to the financial ups and downs that come with it, he has learned the importance of following his “truth,” and hopes to inspire others to do the same along the way. Despite the amount of work that Elliott has poured into this endeavor, he is still far from where he was hoping to be; the biggest speed bump being funding. With getting shut down hundreds of times by large sponsors, on top of the intimidation that comes along with the $12,000 required fee for sponsored boats, Elliott has mostly stuck with grassroots fundraising from and has taken fundraising into his own hands completing handy work for boats around the area. If you feel inspired by Elliott’s story, support his journey through his Go Fund Me campaign, offer a set of extra hands to help him get his boat ready, or send him a stack of your favorite cassettes to keep him connected to humanity while on his journey. History has been made in the small beach towns of North Florida: For the first time, Atlantic Beach, Neptune Beach and Jacksonville Beach all have female mayors. I spent some time with each of them to learn more about their unique friendship and making strides to better the Beaches.
Ellen Glasser: Atlantic Beach Mayor since 2017 Can you tell me about your goals when you were originally elected and re-elected for mayor? “When I first ran I was really looking to try and help stabilize Atlantic Beach and restore a feeling of civility to government…I was elected and got a lot of things done in the first term, but when I ran again, I really had an expanded platform to really focus on public welfare after going through all we’ve been through.” Where are you now on reaching your goals? What are some steps you’re taking? I’m really proud of what we’ve done. The team here in Atlantic Beach with the city manager, all of our department heads and the community have all accomplished quite a bit. We’ve revised and updated many of our plans. That’s our land development regulations, our stormwater master plan. We’ve been looking at sea level rise. We’re focused on public art and art in the community, complete streets, and providing fun recreation events and activities for our people. How did your previous work in law enforcement aid you in your transition to mayor of Atlantic Beach? I really never thought that I would have a political career…here in Atlantic Beach I saw an opportunity to step in and do some of things that I wanted to do, and I think my career in the FBI and as a former faculty member at the University of North Florida really helped me. Everything I’ve ever done in my life contributed to what I was able to do when I became mayor. As a law enforcement officer I’m all about the rule of law and trying to be logical about making things happen, but in the FBI it is supposed to be an apolitical organization and that is the way that I worked for my career in the FBI, and so what I brought from that is a nonpartisan approach to being a mayor of a small town. How is it, being a female mayor of the beach alongside two other empowering women? I can definitely say as a mayor I am as equipped as any man to do this job and that definitely holds true for the other lady mayors at the beach. It’s such an unexpected pleasure and privilege to be serving with the other two lady mayors. We’re all different because our cities are different, and I get a lot out of working with them and learn something every time I am with them…Our relationship is very strong.
26
Elaine Brown: Neptune Beach Mayor since 2016 I noticed that you have a lot of background in the environment. Can you explain how that’s shaped some of your interests as mayor? It should be on every mayor’s agenda throughout the world, and bring it down to this little tiny city doing our part is the most interesting thing. You know, because you have so much at risk. I’ve seen the devastation that Mexico City had when a hurricane hit there. It just wipes out the town…it goes on and on. So taking care of what we have, making sure we’re aware and on top of climate change is something. I have to say I’m lucky the other two mayors are right on board with me and I'm on board with them, as far as protecting our environment. What major challenges have you faced as mayor? Pandemic. Closing the beach. It has to be the biggest challenge. Working with all three beaches together with Duval County with Mayor Curry and this pandemic, when it finally hit in March 2020, was like a turning point for so many of us…it really was the hardest thing on beach living and the people that lived in all three beaches. Have you faced any challenges as a woman in power? I think that when you have the interest of the entire community and of working together to make sure that we are all doing the things that are the best for our communities, and we’re doing them together. I think that that kind of levels the playing field because we’re all in this together. Men, women, children, we’re all in this together.
Christine Hoffman: Jacksonville Beach Mayor since 2020 How was the transition from City Council to mayor of Jacksonville Beach? I was on the Jacksonville Beach City Council for two terms—for eight years—beginning in 2012. I was glad to have that time to really learn the city and learn the role of the city council and the ins and outs, so when I became mayor it was a pretty smooth transition. How has your position on the historical side of Jax Beach aided in your position as mayor? A friend of mine introduced me one time at a speaking engagement. He said that I stand at the intersection of Jacksonville Beach's past and its future and that’s really resonated with me…I get to look at the background of why things are the way they are. In particular, one of the areas I’ve really dug in on is the redevelopment of Jacksonville Beach. There’s been several different bouts of redevelopment. You are the first female mayor of Jacksonville Beach. How has that shaped what you’ve done as mayor? Having gotten to know so much better my colleagues, Mayor Brown and Mayor Glasser, I think that in our cases we all felt very much, even before we got involved in the political side of things, that we needed to be very involved in our community. I’ve always been someone that has stepped up into service roles…these organizations that I think really give me a more rich viewpoint of my community. … Having three women mayors, we just have a special kind of friendship. What would you say to the younger generation about getting into local politics? I think the path that I went on—and, again, my colleagues went on—with community service is a valuable one. I’ve known a lot of people who kind of just woke up one day and decided to run for office without really having any sort of engagement in the community and they may do just fine, but I feel like [community service experience] is a definite advantage. 27

In Defense Of Derp:
The metallic megalith at the former Landing site isn’t all that bad Isa Barrientos
Outrage swept through the city with the start of the summer heat. In June, One Park Jax released the design plans for the park that’s set to take the space where the Landing once stood. The digital mockup included open lawn spaces, a living shoreline, a playground, a pavilion, and what turned out to be one of Jacksonville’s biggest scandals of the year: a 151-foot stainless steel sculpture, set as the centerpiece of the park, to line the cityscape and serve as a landmark. The internet wasted no time in creating memes about and petitions against the sculpture. The hyper-contemporary piece, formed as flowing water, could vaguely be seen as reading “Jax” from the skyline – though many people see lox, lax, lerp, or derp. “IT'S NOT A SIGN, font or letters. It’s a fluid form of water rising up from the river into the City skyline that forms curving shapes reminiscent of the oxbows and bends of the St. Johns River. From every view point, the river form is a completely different sculpture and reflection of a timeline in history,” said artist JEFRE in a statement. It’s abstract art at the largest scale. The concept for the piece has all kinds of hidden meanings: it’s 1822 inches tall and 310 feet wide, corresponding with Jacksonville’s founding year and the length of the St. Johns River. Each vantage point of the massive sculpture will create a new shape and endless interpretations. Though many people appreciated the concept, and most negative remarks were light-hearted, there was no shortage of people who were genuinely offended by the piece. More than 20,000 people signed a change.org petition asking the City Council to stop it from being built, citing national-level ridicule, jokes and shame at Jacksonville’s expense. Many also raised the price tag of $11 million to $18 million as a problem. Though it’s coming from private funding and not taxpayer dollars, internet commenters said that the money would be better off going toward an aquarium or improving infrastructure. Regardless, it would fill a gap in the lack of monumental artwork in the city and serve as a talking point for years to come. The discourse around it only further proves that it can be a timeless landmark. One Park Jax’s window for public input closed in July. It is unclear if the project will move forward as planned at this time.

lurch. Of course, medical marijuana continues to pay literal dividends. Reliable figures are hard to find, but a fair guess puts cannabis revenue in Florida at a half billion dollars, minimum. The lockdown was positively salubrious to their bottom line. Full legalization would help spike turnout among progressive voters, and all the polls suggest that it would pass easily. That would, in turn, flip the revenue by double or triple, almost immediately. Will that happen? Probably not. That said, politics is fun, but that’s not what you really want to read about. You want to know what’s going on in our local cannabis market, and so you shall. For now, you need to obtain your medical marijuana card to be legal. Our city offers many Cannabis Physicians whom can help qualified patients to get their card. And if you haven’t noticed, Jacksonville has cannabis dispensaries popping up all over the place. They all offer wide varieties of medical cannabis products ranging from flower, to concentrates, edibles, oral tinctures, topicals and nebulizer options plus accessories. I will dive into that information a little deeper in next month’s column.

Cardona Direct Primary Care Vincent Dalessio
It’s no secret that the United States Healthcare System is broken. Despite the U.S. spending much more on healthcare than other highincome nations, the U.S. still scores poorly on health measurements like life expectancy, suicide rates and preventable hospital admissions, according to Harvard Health. The average cost of health insurance for an individual is a steep $450 a month and with less than 50% of businesses around the US providing healthcare to employees, many people are left to pull cash out of their own pockets, or worse, go without health insurance. Direct Primary Care is a more affordable option for those looking for basic medical care. DPC is a newer model of healthcare, breaking onto the scene in the early 2000s in which patient/physician relationships have no middle man. Rather than dealing with insurance agencies, billing and collections, and extra staff, DPC patients have an unmediated relationship with the physician. DPC clinics also often have plans for small businesses wanting to provide some form of healthcare for employees but are unable to afford large insurance plans. The Direct Primary Care model has many benefits for patients like more time spent with providers (often with a direct 24/7 phone line), upfront costs, smaller offices and smaller patient pools meaning a more personal relationship with the provider. Although most still encourage insurance for medical emergencies and special procedures, DPC clinics do not accept insurance as a form of payment. Folio recently sat down with Dr. Jing Jing Cardona, a local provider in DPC, to really dive into why more people should look at changing to DPC. Scan QR code here to learn more.

ADULT ADVICE SHARI AND TERRY JAYMES
TERRY: I hate seeing lonely people make desperate decisions. I see stuff like this all the time. SHARI: Wow, Adie, it does sound like your mom is in denial. TERRY: Yes. And it’s important to see what you’re actually dealing with here, Adie. For the life of me I don’t understand why the older we get the more likely we seem to settle for less than we deserve. Maybe it’s a fear of being alone. She obviously has something like that going on.
I need some advice and it’s about my mother. She’s been seeing a golf professional who lives in another state with another woman. She tells me that they are just roommates, but the more she talks to me about him and
SHARI: Well, the older we get, the smaller the dating pool. I feel for your mom for this reason alone. I think we should keep that in mind.
his situation, I feel she’s blinded by love.
TERRY: Watch porn.
Just the other day she told me that she can’t call him at night anymore. She

went and visited him one weekend, and he told my mom not to be weirded out by the furniture as he owns nothing and everything in the home is hers. What’s sad is that my mom doesn’t think any of this is strange. None of this passes the smell test. I have talked to my mom about him, and I expressed my distrust. She said I was silly and made excuses for him. It’s embarrassing to see her so weak and lonely. This doesn’t have a good feel to it. Is there anything else I can do? Adie B. Portland, OR
meet you for coffee. TERRY: And coffee doesn’t break your heart or lie and steal from you. SHARI: OK, back on topic. How can we help Adie? TERRY: Have her drink coffee while watching porn. Actually, there’s nothing you can do, Adie. She’s a grown woman. You may want to consider giving her your thoughts one last time. This is for you more than her. So you can sleep at night knowing you did your best. I’d be willing to bet she’s making excuses for these major red flags. You may want to point that out. It’s been my experience that when someone has to make excuses for their mate, there’s something really wrong. SHARI: I think your mom should at least stop being exclusive with this guy. She needs to get on Bumble and see what else is out there, especially since this guy isn’t even local. A good rogering ought to do the trick. TERRY: Yes. She definitely needs to be less available. But let's be real here. We know he’s not a good guy. Ask your mother what kind of advice she would give you if you were seeing a guy you can’t call at night and used someone else’s home to have you over. Maybe that will at least open her eyes. SHARI: I feel like Adie already tried that but a good idea anyway. Unfortunately, I feel like your mom is headed for heartbreak. TERRY: Be there to pick up the pieces and do your best not to say, “I told you so.”
