Letter from the FESTIVALE CHAIR: Every day is beautiful on the First Coast, but the month of May is a very special time to explore our city, take in the sights and enjoy the events during the ten days of Romanza Festivale of Arts and Culture. The daily schedule is filled with music, visual arts, dance, theater, heritage and cuisine for your entertainment and enlightenment. St. Augustinians believe our small city is the cultural epicenter of the First Coast. Not only is heritage paramount in this “Ancient City”, but arts and culture have thrived since its founding when Don Pedro Menendez brought Spanish court musicians with him to settle the new colony in 1565. This Festivale, the eighth produced by Romanza, spotlights our local arts community, filling the ten days with events starring our own talented citizens as well as featuring programs from those outside our city. Many favorite events are returning: The Chamber Music Series, the Young Performers, the Tale Tellers, the Organ Crawl, a concert in the Gazebo by Mama Blue and Dance Kaleidoscope our own terrific headliner featuring 170 dancers. Other events include “The Trial of B.B. Wolf”, an opera for children; Lincolnville Live!, featuring music in the Commons; A Classic Theatre explores the different aspects of motherhood; the Gainesville Brass; Duo B starring Hirono and Philip Borter; and concerts by the St. Augustine Concert Band, Orchestra and Community Chorus. Don’t miss our headliner, Juana Zayas, concert pianist, who opens Festivale with a FREE concert in the Cathedral Basilica on Friday evening, May 3. Ms. Zayas has just returned from a concert tour in Milan in which the reviewer lauded her as “one of the greatest living pianists”. This year, Romanza Festivale is partnering with two festivals: the Gamble Rogers Music Festival on the first weekend and Unidos en la Musica on the first Saturday. The Gamble Rogers main stage is in Colonial Oaks on St. George Street. and Francis Field will be alive with Latin music during Unidos en la Musica. Come and dance to the beat of Caribeño Tropical and Mariachi Garibaldi in the downtown Gazebo on May 5 as we celebrate Cinco de Mayo. The music will begin at 5 pm. Then, on to a week filled with art, music, drama and good food! You will love being in St. Augustine. Explore our city, dine in our cafes and bistros, visit our shops, galleries, historical sites and museums and discover Festivale - a cavalcade of beautiful music, compelling theater, outstanding art —all found in the nation’s oldest city.

Juana Zayas in Concert at the Cathedral Basilica
H
avana-born pianist Juana Zayas began her musical career at a very early age, performing complicated classical pieces as a little girl. Her mother, realizing her daughter was a child prodigy, took charge of her musical education and Ms. Zayas gave her first recital at age 7. She graduated with a Gold Medal from the Peyrellade Conservatory at age 11 and six years later, she entered the Conservatoire National Superior de Musique de Paris. At the Conservatoire, she studied piano with Joseph Benvenuti and chamber music with Rene Le Roy, receiving first prize in both fields. After Ms. Zayas and her husband married in Versaille, they moved to America where she studied with Adele Marcus, David Barilla and Josef Raieff. After a hiatus from concertizing to raise her children, Ms. Zayas returned to the concert stage to glowing reviews and appreciative audiences the world over. A Steinway artist, Ms. Zayas has given recitals throughout Europe, South America and the United States. She is known in particular for her exquisite and moving performances of the works of Chopin. The critic Harold Schonberg declared: “Ms. Zayas turned out to be a Chopinist to the manner born.” Her performances have been broadcast by National Public Radio and New York’s WQXR. Her recordings delight audiences worldwide. Romanza Festivale • May 3-12 2019

WHAT THE REVIEWERS ARE SAYING ABOUT JUANA ZAYAS: Cesare Guzzardella, March 10, 2019 in Milan, Italy: “Zayas is an excellent pianist…she deserves a full house. …The rest of the program was entirely devoted to the music of Chopin and thus brought to bear Juana Zayas’ well established fondness for the great Polish genius. The overall level of what we heard puts Zayas among the best living pianists.” Peter J. Rabinowitz in “Fanfare”, May/June 2005, in a review of a recording of her Schumann Recital: “This is bold, vigorous, and supremely imaginative playing, notable for its lean, muscular sound, for its wide dynamic contrasts, for its exceptional delineation of conflicts in rhythm and articulations,….for its bristling detail….and for its contrapuntal lucidity. Zayas has an enviable legato.” Donald Manildi in “International Piano Quarterly”, summer 1999: “A quite fabulous amalgam of lyricism, wit, drama, and sheer pianist craft, full of subtle and imaginative detail, lustrous tone, and impeccable technique.” 4

About Romanza Romanza is also very active year-round in advocacy and publicity for the St. Augustine Arts community. Romanza was founded in 2009 by 22 members of key community cultural organizations and was commissioned to serve as the coordinating entity.
Romanza is more than just one festival. “Romanza – St. Augustine”, the organization, produces three large annual events, as well as smaller events.
MISSION: “Romanza - St. Augustine, Inc.” is a nonprofit community organization which promotes and produces cultural events that showcase St. Augustine’s vibrant living culture, that enhance the quality of life for residents, and that create a positive lasting impression of America’s Most Romantic City for visitors.
Our main event is the grassroots, community collaboration “St. Augustine’s Romanza Festivale of Music & The Arts”. Our “St. Augustine Celtic Music & Heritage Festival” is a celebration of the culture and heritage of “America’s Oldest Celtic City”. In 2019 we presented 8 of the top Celtic bands in the world.
Romanza events provide opportunities for Partner organizations and regional artists to perform and present in front of large, diverse festival audiences. Partners produce their own events, pay their own costs, set their own prices and keep all their revenue. Romanza coordinates a festival schedule of Partners’ events plus our own numerous productions and executes major marketing campaigns for the 10-day long Romanza Festivale.
Our St. Augustine’s St. Patrick Parade commemorates the first St. Patrick parade in the world, which took place here in 1601. In addition to major events, Romanza holds monthly Gatherings – outreach mixers that are a unique and comfortable opportunity for the creative community and businesses to socialize, communicate and exchange ideas and information.

praise for their passionate musical commitment, creative style and original programming. The ensemble began in 2009 with the chance meeting of a Japanese violinist (Hirono Sugimoto) and an American cellist (Philip Borter) in Germany at the Hochschule fur Musik-Freiburg. Their fascination with travel, innovative styles of music-making, and each other soon led them down creative and unexpected paths that later resulted in the forming of Duo-B, while still graduate students at the Eastman School of Music. In addition to performing rarely heard classical masterpieces alongside lesser-known works, a great emphasis is placed on the communicative power and remarkable intimacy found in the string duo. The couple has since dedicated much of their performing careers to promoting the wealth of music for violin and cello duo. As winners of numerous awards, they have performed across three continents including landmark performances in Kodak Hall at the Eastman Theater, the Kennedy Center in Washington D. C., the University der Kunst in Berlin and Minatomirai Hall in Yokohama. Dr. Borter is currently a member of the music faculty of Luther College. While dedicating their musical lives to the string duo, Philip and Hirono cherish being full-time parents and sharing as many musical adventures as possible with their three young sons: Jude, Joseph, and Matthew. Free Concert - 5-6pm Memorial Presbyterian Church, 32 Sevilla St.
