Pumpkin spice and basic bitches are back Saturdays are for College Football and weekdays are for talking smack to your friends about last week’s game or this week’s game. Mondays are for celebrating Jaguars victories. (Manifesting this one!) It’s a season of giving and often that giving includes buying on Amazon Prime Day, Black Friday, Cyber Monday or Small Business Saturday. It’s also a time for holidays, events, awareness months and days — and there is no shortage of things to get involved in or be part of.

Whatever you choose to be a part of — or not be a part of — take a cue from Nov. 13 — World Kindness Day – and remember to be kind. The thing that is important to you may not be on the top of someone else’s list: Learn what’s at the top of theirs and teach them about yours. Throughout this busy season we all have a lot on our plates (not just on Thanksgiving), so treat each other with kindness and enjoy the season.

One of the most historic sites in Jacksonville is the grave in Old City Cemetery of Episcopal Bishop John Freeman Young (1820-1885). People in every English-speaking nation sing his words every December. He translated the lyrics of the Austrian carol “Stille Nacht” to “Silent Night.” I found his woefully neglected gravesite in 2002. Since the Episcopal Diocese of Florida had no interest in maintaining the monuments of the Silent Night bishop and his wife, I travelled to Jacksonville (70 miles) three or four times a year to work on the site. At one point, the bishop’s monument needed repairs. It took five years of letters, email, and phone calls to get the Episcopal Diocese to put up the $350 that was needed to pay a monument company. For decades, I visited Bishop Young’s grave on December 24 to place a wreath and sing “Silent Night.” Nobody from the Episcopal church was ever there. I knew that at the same time in Austria, there would be a candlelight ceremony at the grave of the Catholic priest who wrote the “Stille Nacht” poem in 1816. Age has caught up. Now in my 80s, I can no longer maintain the gravesite, but I visit there when in the city for an annual medical appointment at the Veterans clinic. When I stopped in Old City Cemetery the other day, I was shocked to see the deplorable condition of Bishop Young’s grave. It’s the opposite of the scrupulously maintained graves of the Austrian men who created “Stille Nacht,” Joseph Mohr and Franz Gruber. The years of neglect by the current Episcopal Bishop of Florida, Samuel Howard, have clearly indicated that he has no interest in maintaining the legacy of his predecessor. Perhaps volunteers from another religious denomination or history group could organize a committee to care for the site. They could also consider obtaining a historic plaque to relate the “Silent Night” history of Bishop John Freeman Young. That should have been done by the Episcopal church, many years ago. But they, obviously, don’t give a damn. Bill Egan – retired Navy Journalist Flagler Beach

WELCOME TO THE GAYBORHOOD Words by Kelila Ritchie and photos by John Lawless Rainbows, loud music, infectious laughter, dance parties in the middle of the street. River City Pride is the place to be every October. It’s something I personally look forward to every single year. People from so many different walks of life, dancing together, drinking together, taking pictures together. It’s a day for everyone who participates to just be without fear of judgment. In either direction you look, you see people just thoroughly enjoying themselves. We don’t see a lot of that these days. So anytime I’m able to squeeze in some dopamine boosting experiences, I’m all for it. Riverside has been coined as the first “gayborhood” of Jacksonville, for many great reasons. Riverside became Jacksonville’s Pride headquarters following the first gay pride festival at Willowbranch Park in 1978. The event became so successful, it became an annual picnic. During the 1960s, there was a drastic drop in house values in Riverside resulting in “white flight.” This opened the space and opportunity for people from many different backgrounds to find community within this one neighborhood. Throughout the years, Pride events have seen some community backlash but Jacksonville overall has seemingly improved its LGBTQ+ visibility. During a time where being a part of the LGBTQ+ community was less than normalized, the Willowbranch Library also served as a safe haven for the LGBTQ+ community back in the day. JASMYN, a prominent LGBTQ+ youth nonprofit in Jacksonville, actually has roots in the library. In 1992, 19-year-old Ernie Selorio was outed by his mother after she read his journal. Selorio asked for his peers to meet and help form an LGBTQ+ youth support group which resulted in a turnout of 10 people. From there, JASMYN was born and has since blossomed. JASMYN continues to support and provide support to LGBTQ+ teens and young adults around the city. Today, you will likely see modern hippies, happily gay couples, artists, musicians etc. at Bold Bean simultaneously. River City Pride has completely captivated the neighborhood of Riverside. There is a parade that goes through Riverside accompanied by a week of events in Five Points. She IS the moment.
Jacksonville itself has a very colorful history with the LGBTQ+ community which is something we don’t talk about! Jacksonville served as a headquarters for different music genres such as blues, jazz and especially ragtime music. Many of the members who participated in creating Black music and sharing it with the world were members of the LGBTQ+ community. Professor Johnnie Woods was a well known performer, ventriloquist and “female impersonator” (more commonly known today as a drag performer) performed frequently at the Airdome in LaVilla before it was demolished. Another super cool fact that I did not know, Ma Rainey, a prolific blues singer, moved to Jacksonville with her husband to join Pat Chappelle’s variety troupe,The Rabbit’s Foot Company, in 1906. Rainey was bisexual and often talked about same-sex romance in her songs. A fan favorite is “Prove It On Me Blues.” Music often plays a vital role in gay spaces. Speaking of music, many Jacksonvillians have no idea about many different bars and clubs dedicated to creating a safe space for the LGBTQ+ community in Jacksonville (maybe it was just me but anyway …). Sadly, OGs like College Station, Bo’s Coral Reef — which closed in 2019 after 55 years in business — and the Metro Entertainment Complex are no longer with us, but Park Place Lounge, Boot Rack Saloon, Incahoots and others have been carrying the torch with new spots like Hardwicks Bar opening last month to rave reviews. While River City Pride Festival and the always-popular parade through Riverside took place earlier in the month, it’s an important reminder of the purpose of Pride: to unite and celebrate our diverse community in the month of October. And if you missed it this year, be sure to mark your calendar for next year!

Like many longtime cannabisseurs (at least the sane, honest ones), I was thoroughly confused by dabs when all that first became a thing some years back. My tastes were simple, pedestrian even: a toke here, a bong rip there, maybe a mouthful of THC gummies soaked in Manifest vodka on very special occasions, like WrestleMania or the election of Barack Obama. The first time I saw a dab rig, I had no idea what it was; maybe a glass bong made by someone who was already so high that they forgot what they were doing, which is something that does happen. Generally, the last things you want to be playing with when you’re high are red-hot glass, butane torches and nails. In #Florida, that usually means somebody’s in big trouble! I’ve dabbled in dabs for years, always from a position fixed firmly on the periphery, for reasons both practical and professional. But once medical marijuana got started here in 2017, the overall profile of that product was boosted bigly, as dabs went from a relatively isolated gimmick used strictly by hardcore weedies to a legit category that is now easily found at pretty much every dispensary. Oil, wax, resin, shatter — they sound like names that juvenile delinquents give each other, and that’s no accident. Dabbing is for the kind of person for whom finger-blunts and office water cooler bottles just don’t cut it anymore. That used to mean a trip to rehab, but now it means a trip to re-up on concentrate, which is ironic, because the very last thing you’re gonna do after dabbing is concentrate on anything. Dab dilettantes might be shocked to see how sophisticated this particular aspect of the culture has become, but we’ll all have a perfect opportunity to learn more about it on Oct. 28, when the annual Dab Day Halloween Festival takes place at The Glass Factory, a repurposed warehouse turned event space, nestled in the heart of the city’s Railyard District (601 N. Myrtle Ave.), right next to Myrtle Avenue Brewing, which is co-hosting.

The answer is simple.
Certain hosts have even taken the “trick or treat” tradition to a whole new level by crafting a medley of boozy concoctions, each served in a shot glass.
You go trick-or-treating … with a twist.
Among these creations, some are bound to be wickedly awful (trick), while others are scrumptiously delightful (treat). But here’s the kicker: once you

DESIRE FOR DOOM WHY DO WE LIKE TO FEEL FRIGHTENED? Words by Mallory Pace The tradition of Halloween is, objectively, a weird one. When October rolls around, we decorate our homes with skeletons, cobwebs, ghosts and no one bats an eye … get it? We walk through haunted houses fully aware there’s someone dressed in a terrifying costume waiting around every corner to jump out. Despite knowing none of it’s real and there’s no actual danger awaiting us, we still scream and run out of genuine fear. Even outside of Halloween, we watch disturbing horror movies and murder-packed TV shows that fill our insides with anxiety and disgust. Pondering on this strange American tradition a bit more begs the question of, why do we like to feel terror? There is no one answer to this question, in fact, there are quite a few explanations depending on whom you ask and in what context. One of the simplest reasons is found in our thrill-seeking nature. Jonathan Bassett, a psychology professor at Lander University in Greenwood, South Carolina, said these thrill- or sensation-seeking behaviors also explain why people enjoy roller coasters, bungee jumping, skydiving, etc. These activities provide a neurochemical jolt in our brain in ways we don’t typically get in our daily lives. Some people possess this “sensation-seeking” trait more than others, which psychologists use to see how much an individual likes to look for novelty and excitement in their lives. Correlation survey research shows high sensation-seeking predicts greater enjoyment and more frequent watching of horror media, Bassett explained. “So for these folks, watching murder, blood, gore and horror, gets them kind of the same level of arousal, physiologically, that low sensation seekers might get from more mundane kinds of experiences,” he added. Another explanation for why we might desire unpleasant feelings is called cultivation appreciation. Bassett explained that like a pungent cigar, a dry wine or spicy food, horror movies and thrill-inducing activities are an acquired taste that can evolve over time. “Maybe there’s just something enjoyable about overcoming that initial unpleasantness and learning to sort of cultivate an appreciation for it,” Bassett said. Bassett also argues that horror aficionados might take pride in their ability to regulate their emotions and overcome feelings of fear and disgust. But on a deeper level, they learn to appreciate the technique and artistry that goes into creating a high-quality horror scene or haunted attraction. A third explanation is called the excitation transfer theory, or simply put, relief. It might not be that we actively enjoy being afraid but more so enjoy the sense of relief we feel when it’s over. Many horror movies use pop-up scenes to induce anxiety via anticipation, but the fear felt during the scene is quickly alleviated when the jump scare is over, the movie continues on and we can breathe again. That feeling might be what we seek and enjoy, not necessarily the agonizing anticipation. Like roller coasters, Bassett explained, we get off the ride and jump with glee and excitement, partly because of the thrill and partly because it’s over.

by investigating psychological theories surrounding death, anxiety and the defenses we use to manage that anxiety. He claims one positive of horror exposure is it allows us to confront the disturbing reality of mortality in a way that’s typically repressed. The topic of death isn’t something talked about socially or casually, even though we all think about it to some extent. It’s become unspoken, almost taboo in society, and we aren’t all that exposed to death aside from a personal loss or in the media. Bassett argues that horror is one genre able to break through social disguises about what’s polite and what makes us uncomfortable, but in a fictional way. “It kind of allows us to look behind the curtain, to stare into the abyss and see the reality of that thing we typically repress,” he said. Bassett’s advice to readers this Halloween season is to go out there, unabashed and unashamed, and enjoy the scary activities, horror movies and haunted attractions because at best, there’s a potential to raise your social consciousness by interacting with these issues. You might gain a new sense of mastery or control over your life, or at the very least, it’s an opportunity to confront your inner fears in a safe, controlled environment. But if none of those things happen, Bassett said, it’s still just fun.

about.
We are talking about the moral superiority that came with it and how members within the community began overreaching in the name of being “woke.” Or when opposing opinions simply could not exist, and if they did? People were then deemed homophobic or transphobic for simply disagreeing with a few of the remodeled terms and conditions that most had not realized changed, the overreaching alienated moderate supporters. Once again, driving the wedge between the two parties even further because “wokeness” in gender ideology is not a pretty sight. Take, for instance, the case of Canada’s oldest women’s domestic violence shelter in Vancouver. In 2019 they lost their local authority funding because they stood their ground on the admission of trans women (biologically male). Sure, they could’ve handled things differently, but in the name of “inclusion,” the local authority claimed a short-term victory. And the result? An essential service became crippled, division intensified and the long-term damage to the cause was undeniable. It seems people now demand nothing short of rigid conformity to their newfound focus on gender ideology and a pecking order of wokeness that’s tearing apart the progressive agenda. The term “one bad egg could spoil it all” is essentially exactly what happened. (Albeit, it was a few more than just one egg). When the Libs took the term and morphed it to fit their agenda, that is where “woke” went to die (at DeSantis’s discretion). Once a symbol of heightened awareness to racial bias and discrimination is now more like a badge worn proudly by those leaning a tad too far to the left, which conveniently becomes ammunition for those a tad too far to the far right. It’s unfortunate, really, for all of the moderate Democrats. Being “blue” does not equal being “woke.” But in the eyes of politics, and everyone within the sphere, you are what your party is. How drab. A perfect example would be this fascinating piece of mail we received only a few days ago when we sent out our Holiday Ad Gift Guide: “As I don’t agree with your ‘Woke’ agenda, I would not even consider advertising in your rag.” (Thank you, SignsPlus! And oh, yes, thanks for being a “Folio” reader too!) Now, what “woke agenda” are they referring to? As an alternative news magazine (emphasis on magazine), I don’t see us having any real agenda, other than to inform and entertain. But since we are a bit left-leaning (thank you, Ronny Boy), of course, that means we are “woke”... how silly! We’ve reached a juncture where the true meaning of this word is as clear as mud. Republicans tossing it around seem to be in the dark about its real essence, while the Libs are contorting and reshaping it to suit their ever-evolving agenda. So we are left at a standstill. Do we reclaim the word? Or let it die at the hands of those who don’t quite grasp what it stands for? Or, do we pull a Nancy Pelosi and be damned to an eternal hell of “wokeness” for wishing American citizens a happy “Schwanza” instead of “Kwanzaa.”

Your name is Rhett, and you worked as the cashier at Publix off Atlantic in AB. We chatted a bit about your name and the character from “Gone with the Wind.” You said the book was better than the movie, and encouraged me to read it. I was duly impressed you had 1) seen the movie 2) read the book!! Love a literary man. And it doesn’t hurt when he’s also tall, dark, and handsome. It’s safe to say you’re the most memorable cashier I’ve ever had. I wanted to give you my number but the next time I came back to Publix you’d quit. One lady said you went on to flight school…? Or maybe it was JU… I couldn’t get a clear answer on where you’d gone. In any case, Rhett, I’d very much like to talk to you again.

SAFE HAVEN Many survivors of domestic violence face many barriers when trying to leave an abusive relationship — lack of resources, affordable housing, conflicting feelings and beliefs, and familial values to name a few. Survivors may be afraid the violence will increase if they try to leave. They may also stay out of fear they will lose their children or their family may be harmed as a result. In many cases, these fears are based on past experiences. Affordable housing is one of the most significant barriers survivors face. This is one of the biggest challenges people face when leaving an abusive relationship: Where will I go? “Survivors need to be able to rent or own a home at a worker’s level of income so they have choices to live free of the abuser. We need to address how rising costs of living and costs in general are impacting everyone,” said Patin. “But for a survivor, it could be deadly.” To address domestic abuse cases in Northeast Florida, The Hubbard House and other local organizations like Sulzbacher and the City Rescue Mission remain dedicated to creating a safe space for survivors of domestic violence. Patin attributes the success of Hubbard House to the support of the Jacksonville community. The mission of Hubbard House is safety, empowerment and social change for victims of domestic violence and their families. Patin also stated the importance of family and friends in a domestic violence situation and had these tips on supporting someone you know may be involved in an abusive relationship. She suggested posting information about domestic violence on social media; sharing information about resources available to them; and above all, being there for them — in private and away from the abuser. Tough love, she added, is not the answer. When dealing with someone being abused at home who hasn’t left the relationship yet, it’s human nature to carry that worry with you and want them to leave. Though it may feel like the right thing to do, tough love can be detrimental to the survivor. Whether it is the first time they decide to leave or the 100th, support them in doing so, every time. “Believe them in doing that because that one time may be the time when they leave that it sticks,” Patin said. If you or anyone you know is dealing with domestic violence, please call the 24-hour Domestic Violence Hotline at (904) 354-3114. This month, as every month, “Folio” continues to spread awareness for survivors of domestic violence. We hear you, we see you, we believe you.

BUCHNER’S BIERHALLE Now this wouldn’t be a proper scavenger hunt if we didn’t get lost a few times. When my Apple Maps told me I had arrived at my location, I had to doublecheck I was in the right place as I was standing in front of a seemingly closed vapor shop on Edgewood Avenue in Murray Hill. Luckily, I saw somebody else walk in. Through its vapor shop guise, you wouldn’t guess that a German-themed speakeasy is located in the back of this shop. And boy, do I love themes. This speakeasy only offers German beers and wine, and I’m not complaining. Not to mention the amount of detail was impressive, from the menus to the decoration, this place screams German. And surprise! There’s more. Behind the speakeasy is the biergarden. Which I can only assume is the German way of saying outdoor patio. The garden was much more quiet and decorated with hanging lights (bonus points if you can find all the gnomes). Unfortunately, I got to this speakeasy after 11 p.m., but if you start your nights earlier and are in need of German-themed food, this is the place to go. THE PARLOUR Funnily enough, when you search The Parlour on the web, it is listed as a beauty salon. They truly took that whole secret thing to heart even if this speakeasy is hidden behind Grape & Grain Exchange, which is a bar in San Marco Square. Despite the fact that the curtains were drawn back and essentially open to the rest of Grape & Grain, I wouldn’t have guessed what I was about to walk into. I walked through the misleading hallway and was met with hypnotizing live jazz music and a full bar. I quickly ordered some cocktails, and by quickly I mean I asked the bartender to make me whatever the couple next to me was having. Thankfully, the cocktail was delicious and so was the atmosphere. It was the kind of place I could get lost in. Are we rating? Cause this speakeasy gets a 13/10. SECRET TIKI TEMPLE Tucked behind Pagoda Restaurant on Baymeadows Road, you’ll find the Secret Tiki Temple. Its secret? You need a reservation. Luckily, you can usually make reservations day of and needless to say, it’s worth the visit. This speakeasy is decorated to the nines, and if you’re impressed by its colorful lights and island-inspired seating, you’ll be even more impressed by its cocktail menu and food menu. TIPSY DUCK PARLOR This one goes out to all of you Jeep and soap lovers. Let me set the scene. You’re casually spending the day shopping in St. Augustine when you stumble upon a soap shop. But not just any old soap shop. Located inside Bath Junkie in St. Augustine is the Tipsy Duck Parlor. A rubber duck-themed bar, with a few tables and bar stools styled to look like duck feet. Not only does this fever dream speakeasy offer specialty cocktails but they also have a make-your-own soda option with a range of flavors to choose from. Bonus points because pets are welcome. THE RL LOUNGE Finding the address is easy: 712 N Hogan St. Finding parking is a cinch (there’s a garage next door). Finding this super hidden speakeasy … not so easy. You may even want to give up after your third drive around the block, but if you do, you’ll be missing out on a true hidden gem. Located inside the NoCo Center (currently home of the King Tut exhibit, which also hosted “Beyond Van Gogh”). Once you make it to the door (look for Tut), enter and take a left. Just down the hallway, you’ll find a cozy, sophisticated lounge serving up craft cocktails, killer panini and their highly craveable nut mix. Not to mention some of the best service with a smile in town.

PLAY DEFEATS CANCER Words and photos by Carson Rich The Roc Solid Foundation, an organization created to serve children who are fighting cancer, made a stop in Jacksonville for their “Play Defeats Cancer Tour.” During the tour, volunteers and teams from Roc Solid travel across the country to build custom backyard playsets for children diagnosed with cancer. Eric Newman, the founder and chief play officer of Roc Solid, came up with the idea for the tour based on his own history of battling a life-threatening illness. After beating a rare form of liver cancer and seeing loved ones around him suffer, he began to struggle with finding his own purpose in life. This all changed for him once he began sharing his story and realizing that he is not alone in the fight. “Everything that you see right now has come from some of the turmoil that was created in my life. With me being a childhood cancer survivor, I know exactly what the kids are going through,” said Newman. “I was a second child, three years old when I was diagnosed. My dad’s sister, a second child, three years old, was diagnosed with leukemia. My dad’s brother, a second child, three years old, was diagnosed with an inoperable brain tumor. So I witnessed play be taken from them as well, and they lost the fight.”
Newman worked previous jobs in construction and even started his own companies, but after an unfortunate series of events caused him to let go of them, he started on his own journey to inspire kids who are going through the same things that brought him here. Combining his knowledge of construction with the passion that he has to brighten children’s lives created the Roc Solid Foundation and most importantly, the “Play Defeats Cancer Tour.” When asked why Roc Solid specifically chose to build playsets for these children, Newman spoke about the impact that playing outside has had on them as children and why it is so detrimental to have that stripped out from underneath them. “The reason that we built playsets specifically is that the one thing that you and I never had to be taught to do is to play, play is a universal language, play is a gift to the imagination. And once a child is diagnosed with cancer, all of that becomes off limits. Play becomes off limits. See, you and I choose to stop playing, but kids fighting cancer, they don’t have a choice.” Their stop in Jacksonville served to help 4-year-old Aspen Peterson-Armengol, diagnosed with embryonal rhabdomyosarcoma (ERMS), an aggressive form of childhood cancer. Due to her being immunocompromised, she has not been able to play on public playgrounds since her diagnosis, taking away some of the biggest moments that every child deserves to have at a young age. Building this playset gives her the opportunity to have that experience. Unfortunately, Peterson-Armengol could not be there in person for the reveal of her new playground because she needed emergency surgery, but a heartfelt Facetime call was made later that day, and she was smiling from ear to ear. Eric Newman has dedicated everything he has toward the cause, and he feels like now he has finally found his purpose. “This is what I was put here on this earth to do, this is why I still have breath in my lungs … they don’t. So I’m gonna chase this and fight as hard as I can, until every child gets the ability to play,” he said. “It’s bigger than screws. It’s bigger than bolts. It’s bigger than wood. It’s a moment. And that’s what these families yearn for is, like, they want a sense of normal. And so this place provides the emotional support behind it; it gives them a taste of hope.”

AMBAR: Once Carmen was finished with her intense, nail-biting reading, it was my turn. I went into this reading wanting to know if moving to New York City in the near future was a good decision. Not as scary as a relationship reading, but still nerve-wracking as you never want to hear that your dream doesn’t align with your purpose. Still, I went into it with an open mind and heart. CARMEN: That would be such a shame, wouldn’t it? AMBAR: Anyway, Ruth was about to ring the bell to tune in with my spirit guides, but, of course, Carmen’s guides were not finished and had one more question for her. CARMEN: They wanted to know just how long I was going to sit on this information. Yet I’m the bossy one? AMBAR: I wouldn’t expect anything less from her guides honestly. Once they were finished making sure Carmen heard what they had to say, they dipped and in came my guides.
The girls see a psychic Words by Ambar Ramirez and Carmen Macri CARMEN: Let me start by saying I was a bit skeptical of this. It is hard for me to put my blind faith into something I truly do not understand. Still, during my reading, there were just so many specificities mentioned that I had no other choice but to fully believe every single thing Ruth Elder told me. AMBAR: Let’s set the scene. I was severely hungover, and Carmen just got back from a weekend trip of over-spending and over-drinking. Nonetheless, we made our way over to the Portal, Midnight Sun’s dedicated space for psychics, tarot readings and other spiritual healing activities. And as soon as we walked into the incense-filled room I felt my hangover dissipate and a sense of peace. CARMEN: One of us had to be the guinea pig, and it had to be me. Great. After racking my brain for a whole two minutes, I came up with the perfect question (I’m sorry, Ryan): Am I in the right relationship? But, she said, that was too broad of a question, so she sat me down and we went over the specific sub-questions that I should also be asking, i.e. who am I with him, who would I be without him and vice versa. Needless to say, questions were answered, but new questions arose and I didn’t have the heart to ask them. AMBAR: Before Ruth starts shuffling and pulling cards, she rings a little bell to channel our spirit guides. And one thing about spirit guides is they have a lot to say and aren’t afraid to hold back. As they should. CARMEN: Before she even pulled a card, I guess my spirit guides had a lot they wanted to say. My guides told me that I already knew the answer to my question, but I just needed that energy push to solidify it. They also said I was a bit bossy, but that’s neither here nor there. The first card pulled was Page of Wands — reversed (every card pulled was reversed). The Page of Wands reversed suggests that you can feel the stirrings of something new emerging within you, but you don’t know how to turn it into action. That was the catalyst that set my very, very hefty reading into place.

CARMEN: Ambar’s guides were a lot nicer than mine. AMBAR: They were very sweet, and if I could have seen them, I would’ve given them a kiss on the mouth. CARMEN: I would have shaken them. AMBAR: Enough with the interruptions. You and your spirit guides are so alike. Anyway, after my guides quickly let me know that I was essentially on the right path and have a good track with luck, they noted how I am often hesitant. And if you know me at all, you know I don’t make decisions easily (or at all – Carmen.). Which is why I did the reading in the first place. I’d rather have someone else (aka a clarity reader), make the decision for me. CARMEN: Essentially, Ambar is moving to New York City and I need to have a long talk with my boyfriend. AMBAR: I call that a win-win situation if you ask me. CARMEN: Mmm hmm ... AMBAR: If things don’t work out for Carmen and her relationship, she can move to New York with me. CARMEN: Overall, it was an amazing experience. We gave Ruth very little information about us, and most of what she said was spot on (albeit, annoying to hear, but spot on.) She has been doing this for over 30 years and it shows. She made sure we were comfortable and understood exactly what each card meant. AMBAR: If you have the chance to get a reading or are currently having internal battles, visit Ruth Elder at the Portal. You won’t regret it. CARMEN: Well, you might.
“I started reading Tarot when I was 20 years old due to a “twist of fate.” I was raised in a very strict Catholic household where things like Tarot were verboten. I had a friend whom I had met through another twist of fate. (She was the ex-girlfriend of my then-husband.) Susie had been raised in Daytona and attended church in Cassadega, so she was very much in the Tarot/Mediumship/ Psychic mindset. One day, we were hanging out, and she said, “I want a Tarot reading,” and handed me her deck of Tarot cards. I told her, “I don’t know how to read Tarot. And she replied, “Yes, you do.” I don’t even remember what I read, but I remember that reading the tarot cards was like getting a taste of the most delicious thing I had ever tasted: I had to find out more. I have had a passion for Tarot and Divination ever since! Susie gave me her own deck after that first reading and she taught me a lot. I’ve spent the last 31 years reading books and taking classes and reading as many people as possible to keep expanding my knowledge. Now I also teach Beginning Tarot classes to help others learn. The wonderful thing about divination in any form is that there is always more to learn to strengthen your skills. About half the people I read have never had their cards read before. And I’m always happy to demystify the “scary” Tarot cards like Death, The Devil or the Tower card. (P.S. all are about change, which is why people find them scary.) In the end, my goal is to give people clear guidance on how to move forward to their highest good. I want to give my clients as much clarity through the reading as possible,

ing “it’s a great example of how a healthy relationship can be.” Thanks for all the laughs and inspiration, for it’s inspiration I need. I’m 17 years old and my uncle got me a job at his dentist office. I basically answer the phones. I do a good job, but I’m afraid to tell everyone involved I want more in life. I’m very outgoing and love to laugh with my friends. What I want to do is go to college and get into the entertainment industry. Either in front of the camera or behind the scenes. I’m pretty sure, OK, I know this won’t go over well with my parents. But I really want to do it. I know Terry is in the industry, so could he give me some insight on what I can expect?
