"It just heals up so much better. To the point I’m more functional now than I have been in years!”
Hi,
Nice recent article on a very controversial topic. I suggest an addition to fully clarify and present current Florida law, which does in fact allow open carry under specific conditions:
• A person engaged in fishing, camping, or lawful hunting or going to or returning from a fishing, camping, or lawful hunting expedition;
• A person engaged in the business of manufacturing, repairing, or dealing in firearms, or the agent or representative of any such person while engaged in the lawful course of such business; and
• A person firing weapons for testing or target practice under safe conditions and in a safe place not prohibited by law or going to or from such place. [Fla. §§ 790.053 and 790.25(1)]
Thanks, Sean
BOUQS & BRICKS BOUQUETS
To Beaches Energy and Beaches Sea Turtle Patrol. With sea turtle nesting season underway, the two organizations launched the #CleanDarkFlat campaign to ensure that our local beaches are safe for sea turtles (clean = free of litter, dark = free of artificial light, flat = free of holes or sandcastles that can trap turtles). Support the cause by purchasing a $10 mug from participating coffee shops at the Beaches. Donations can also be made at the Beaches Energy Services office at Jacksonville Beach City Hall.
To HarperCollins and Penguin Random House for their Unbanned Book Club. The publishing giants donated more than 500 books currently banned or being challenged which will be distributed through Little Free Library’s network of book exchange boxes. To learn more, visit littlefreelibrary.org.
BRICKBATS
To the unrelenting heat making this summer one for record books across the globe. Since global warming/climate change is partially to blame, we’re tossing a bunch of bricks to the top causes.
Burning coal and gas. Who’s to blame? Mostly power companies. We need to keep moving forward on the path of generating power from wind and solar sources
Cutting down forests. Who’s to blame? Three-quarters of deforestation is driven by agriculture. Infrastructure development is responsible for 9-17%. Fertilizers containing nitrogen. Who’s to blame? Companies that produce synthetic fertilizers which contain nitrogen. When nitrogen is exposed to soil in its active form, like fertilizer, the gas is 300 times more potent at warming the atmosphere than carbon dioxide.
Increased livestock farming: What’s to blame? The methane and nitrous oxide gases produced by the practice of rearing farmed animals.

T H E MAIL
Pumpkin spice is in the air, Aries. Can you smell it? Unfortunately for you, this fall won’t just be pumpkin carving and “Gilmore Girls” reruns. You might find yourself confronted with situations that require decisive choices. Be wary with how you choose: Similar to the spookiness of the season that is to come, you might find yourself down an undesirable path.
HOROSCOPES ARIES TAURUS
Happy Fall, sweet Taurus. Even though the leaves are changing colors, it doesn’t mean you have to. In fact, on Sept. 5 when Jupiter goes into retrograde, it would be wise to lay down a strong foundation for any upcoming plans. And just as the trees shed their leaves to make room for fresh ones, devote some time to clearing up a path of your own and make room for all the new opportunities soon to come your way.
GEMINI
The moon will be in Gemini for most of September which calls for celebration! Finally, a month of positivity and good vibes! It’s been a while, hasn’t it? Use the upcoming moon cycle for positive growth and self-reform. Channel your inner witch; you know you want to. Light some candles and perform a seance.
CANCER
Time to get cozy and light those marshmallow-scented candles, Cancer. You’ve been through a lot of emotions these past couple of months and rather than continue this cycle and fall into despair, fall into the warmth of your bed. Lean into what and who you know, those you trust most. And strengthen those relationships rather than going to look for new ones.
LIBRA
Time and time again these horoscope predictions have urged you to find balance and harmony within yourself, Libra. Yet it seems that the stars are not fully convinced of your efforts. Hopefully, this season will urge you to finally make some changes in your life. You just need to be-leaf in yourself and the rest will play out.
SCORPIO
Oof. Another month of self-reflection, Scorpio. Maybe it’s time to make some actual changes rather than tip-toeing around the subject. Although you may think you are perfect (you are), some take your overbearing, intense personality as a red flag (it’s not). You will feel your emotions in full force on the full moon — much like a werewolf — but don’t shy away. Embrace it and make a change.
SAGITTARIUS CAPRICORN
I spy with my little pie an obstacle-filled month for you, Sagittarius. You’ve made a lot of progress within your personal and social life but with Uranus and Jupiter making their way through your sign, you will be forced to get down and dirty. During this time, it will be important to ignore the star’s effort to falter your spirit. Maybe turn off all the overhead lights, light some witchy candles and cozy up to a good Fall-themed movie.
Money this, overworking that. Maybe it’s time to chill the f*** out. As the weather cools down, so should you. You are no fun to be around when you’re being a control freak. Focus on mending relationships. Use this time to self-reflect and relax.
AQUARIUS
Not only is fall in the air, Leo, so is love. Use that charming personality of yours and get “boo-ed up.” It’s time to end that dry spell. Your social life will be fulfilled this month, forming new friendships and relationships,so make it count.
LEO VIRGO
Hay there, Virgo! Despite the ups and downs of these last couple of months, you are walking down a pumpkin patch path that is leading you right where you need to be. All you need to do is recognize that you harness all the power to be the best version of yourself. Maybe Fall is the perfect season to release that power the same way the trees shed their leaves.
Spice, spice, baby! This month is pushing you to the edge, Aquarius with Jupiter and Uranus in Taurus messing with your usual cool spirit. But you’ve been through worse, right? Instead of focusing on the obstacles blocking your clear view, direct your focus on clear communication. Allow the universe to settle from the heat of the Summer and cool down.
PISCES
Boo! More like boo-hoo. September calls for a time of reflection, introspection and deep healing. You can’t just rewatch “Hocus Pocus” for the 10th time and ignore your problems. Newsflash: You can’t ghost your issues. Use the downtime this fall to face your challenges head on and make necessary changes in your life.

“A Beach Day” By Adam Johnson
THE SPECKTATOR
Words by Kerry Speckman
Comedian and “Saturday Night Live” alum Pete Davidson scheduled a last-minute date for two shows at Ponte Vedra Concert Hall late last month. I, for one, was not willing to spend a car payment to see him, which is a relief since I saw some very mixed reviews on FB (from “great show” to “cringy misogyny”). Turns out, I could have seen Davidson the day before had I been at Don’s Barbershop in Ponte Vedra. In a Specktator exclusive, I spoke to stylist Khristina Himes who gave the comedian a quick trim around the ears and neck. “He was super nice and down-to-earth. Just a regular guy,” she said about her surprise walk-in client. Davidson also told her he just bought a Honda Ruckus scooter and asked where he should take it for a ride. The cut, she said, took less than five minutes, and for her work, he handed her a $100 bill. In case you are wondering (because I sure was), Davidson found Don’s randomly in a Google search and read the reviews.
The Regency AMC 24 is literally rolling out the red carpet for Chad Hendricks’ latest film, “Bloody Freakin Mary.” Shot entirely in Jacksonville (mostly Moncrief, to be more specific), the film centers around four teens (played by Aniyah Thomas, Whitney Carroll, Gwenett Henderson and Pao Portillo) and their unintentionally “killer” slumber party. Hendricks, who served as writer, director, producer and editor of the film, as well as many of the all-local cast and crew, will be in attendance when “Bloody Freakin Mary” premieres Sept. 7 at 7 p.m. at Regency AMC 24. Check out facebook.com/bloodyfrickinmary for the deets. And be careful what you say in front of a mirror.
Selma Alicajik (middle) smashed it in the Battle of the Neighborhoods Cocktail Competition hosted by the Hyatt Regency Jacksonville Riverfront. The Volstead bartender, who represented Downtown, took home the top prize with her creation —the Selma Smash — made with Roku gin, fresh peaches, basil, lime, simple syrup and club soda. As part of her win, the hotel will make a donation to her charity of choice, JASMYN. Michael Bovender and Rachel Gerber placed second and third, respectively.
Membership has its privileges. And as a member of the Florida Theatre, I went on a hard hat tour of the venue while it’s undergoing an $8.2 million make-over. Florida Theatre President Numa Saisselin explained the changes, which include total makeovers of the bathrooms “down to the studs” and repair and repainting of the entire interior using historically accurate colors, which are noticeably different from the colors they’ve been for decades. The project is scheduled to be completed in October, just in time for “The Rocky Horror Picture Show” on Oct. 28.
I spotted this ridiculousness on a white box van on 301 near Baldwin. While there’s no “QIA” on this piece of “art,” I have a suggestion: “Q” for “Questioning,” “I” for “Indictment” and “A” for “Arrest.” #P01135809
Completely Booked:
PODCAST PICKS
Words by Su Ertekin-Taner
“Folio” is completely hooked on the Jacksonville Public Library’s official podcast, “Completely Booked”! On this bimonthly podcast, Jacksonville’s chroniclers, thriller authors, cookbook creators, biographers, queer historical fiction writers, poets, romance novelists and wordsmiths gather for a recorded tete-a-tete with a cute and snappy name — Lit Chat or Teen Lit Chat for the library’s teenage audience — with other Jacksonville-based writers. As the equally cute and snappy synthesizer-based introductory music fades, I ready myself for some literary shop talk among the stacks.
I peruse the episode library as I would a conventional library, scanning for familiar last names and enticing genres. I’m indecisive as always, lost in the neverending catalog and choosing between Lit Chats with featured names like cookbook author Chef Dennis Chan, graphic novelist Leela Corman, producer and author Nikesha Elise Williams, chronicler of Jacksonville history Wayne W. Wood, debut novelist Valerie Bowman and even poet Jessica Q. Stark featured in a past Su’s Summer Books article.
I listen to the jacket cover sound bites of the episode — when the interviewing author asks about the featured author’s written inspiration, writing and publishing process, surrounding writing community and specialized genre. While the saying cannot be universally applied, more means more when it comes to featuring Jacksonville’s storytellers. That is to say, when two authors are put into conversation with one another, there is twice as much to learn … more editorial and publishing stories to share, more earnest, empathetic responses and more juicy insights into the author’s life. For an after-podcast bonus, find a featured author’s book in the Jacksonville Public Library’s collection.
Whether you’re a publishing fanatic, local author, aspiring writer or casual reader, get ready to be completely booked (for an hour, at least) when Completely Booked releases its bimonthly episodes.
Listen to “Completely Booked” on the Jacksonville Public Library’s official website, Apple Podcasts, Spotify, Stitcher, Listen Notes, YouTube, RadioPublic, Player FM, iHeart, and Luminary Podcasts and other streaming platforms.
OG Sessions:
You ask and “Folio” delivers or, rather, you tag a podcast in our Instagram comments, and we check it out. We found this next podcast pick floating somewhere in our social media cosmos. After some light social media stalking/surveying — whichever noun you prefer —we were invested in weekly podcast “OG Sessions” hosted by entrepreneur Nick Usher.
Established in December 2021, “OG Sessions” features 30- to 60-minute episodes with local artists, actors, entrepreneurs, and public figures like hip-hop artist Reecie Montana, UFC fighter Trey Waters, Upland Clothing Co. owner Jesse Ferrell, R&B singer Ebonique, Jacksonville Jaguars creative content manager Devin Carvajal and painter Aristide Pinto. Even some featured “Folio” alums like podcaster-comedian Bobby Brown Jr. and “SoulHood” actor Broadway Louie have joined Usher on the podcast.
With every guest and every episode, Usher digs into a niche for the day. Usher relives a musical artist’s excitement about their most important performance, questions the root of an entrepreneurial endeavor and the life of the entrepreneur before their newfound profession. He inquires about an artist’s distinct artistic process and investigates the logistics of how a photographer connects with big name brands. And as always, the host talks game with his guests. Not the Monopoly or hunting kind of game, but the financial and professional kind.
What makes Nick Usher an OG in the Jacksonville community is not only the quality or diversity of the guests. Usher also builds a bona fide familiarity with his guests. While Usher is a researched interviewer with the eloquence of a host and the curiosity of a fan, his “interviews” always transcend investigations. They are flavorful conversations that allow listeners insight into two notable Jacksonville figures (Usher and his guest) rather than one. So, enjoy a hearty conversation, find and try a new passion on for size, talk a little shop and explore the multifacetedness of the Jacksonville community with OG Sessions.
Listen to OG Sessions on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, Amazon Music, Listen Notes, Podbay, YouTube, Stitcher and other streaming platforms.

JAGUARS 2023 PRESEASON RECAP
Words and Photos by Carson Rich
Following the success of last year, the summer heat gave way to much anticipation for the Jaguars 2023 season. Preseason games are never really taken seriously by the fans, but it does give insight to the amount of depth a team has for future years, and if anything ever happens to their starting players. Fans have been eager to see what happens next after the series of exciting offseason moves were made a few months back, and this three game stretch makes the hype seem real.
The Jaguars took control early during the first game against the Dallas Cowboys, as they took a 14-0 lead going into the second half. Former CFL quarterback Nathan Rourke had the crowd roaring as he escaped three defenders and threw a near impossible yet perfect ball to running back Qadree Ollison for a touchdown late in the 4th quarter. This spotlight was also shared by rookie Anton Harrison who showed that he has potential to become an elite pass blocker, as he protected any pressure from getting to the quarterback. Although Dallas opted to bench a large number of their starters to avoid injury, Jacksonville walked away with the win, more than satisfied with how their new faces handled the pressure.
Week 2 of the stretch only excited fans more as they went head-to-head with the Detroit Lions. This game was off to a slow start as both teams did not play many of their starters, so some first year jitters were being shaken off during the first couple drives. Jacksonville would eventually pick up the pace, however, dominating on both sides of the ball and preventing any sense of victory for Lions Head Coach Dan Campbell. Jags first-year running back Tank Bigsby proved himself well as he carried the ball 13 times for 70 yards, and running back D’Ernest Johnson also held his own, giving the Jags both of their rushing touchdowns on the night. The Jaguars take yet another win for their undefeated preseason record, pulling off an impressive score of 25-7.
Jacksonville came out swinging during their first two matchups, and it did not stop there, as they had no struggles against their final opponent, the Miami Dolphins. The first half really showed how much depth the Jaguars have in the running back area, as both Travis Etienne Jr. and D’Ernest Johnson added a touchdown each, giving them a 17-6 lead going into the third quarter. The Jags pushed their way through to a 31-18 lead, until the game was called early due to an injury on Miami’s Daewood Davis, who was eventually carted off the field and is now conscious and has movement in all extremities.
In a few games that fans never usually pay any mind to, the Jacksonville Jaguars revitalized the hype for the upcoming season. Their rookies shined and showed why they deserve a spot in the league, running through all of their opponents like a freight train. These three games finally satisfied fans of their cravings since the heartbreaking loss in last year’s playoffs, and showed that “It was always the Jags”.

TURNING FANTASY INTO A REALITY: THE BRUTAL WORLD OF FANTASY FOOTBALL AND ITS CONSEQUENCES
Words and Photos by Carson Rich
It’s that time again. Time to sit on the couch and do absolutely nothing but scream at random people on the TV screen while smashing a 12-pack on the couch every Sunday. The creative, magical world of fantasy football is back with a vengeance, and each year everyone is just trying to avoid landing in that last place spot. Punishments have become a viral moment for leagues everywhere, so if you need some new ideas on how to make your friends pay, we’ve got you covered.
For those who aren’t familiar with fantasy football, each person in the league drafts an entire team of active NFL players, who are scored based on how they do in real time. Your team faces a new team each week like an actual season, hoping to be good enough to make the playoffs at the end of the year and take home the championship. Some leagues also have consolation brackets during playoff time to decide who the biggest loser is, which ultimately decides who gets to endure a punishment that the league has chosen beforehand.
Fantasy football punishments are brutal to say the least. Sometimes it only takes one game to decide your fate, and one great season could swiftly turn into public humiliation. In case you’re new here or play fantasy football and can’t come up with a good one, we’ve gathered a list to help you out:
The One-Chip Challenge: Starting off hot, the loser of the league must purchase and the “Paqui One Chip,” supposedly the hottest nacho chip made and endure more than a minute and a half without anything to drink or help cool it down.
The Milk Mile: This is not for the lactose intolerant players out there. The loser must dress up in business clothes and shoes, travel to a local track and run a mile. Seems simple right? No. In between each quarter mile, they have to chug a quarter of a milk gallon. This ounuagnwbr is one of the reasons this story was written because of how harsh it is.
IHOP/Waffle House Challenge: This one has been a classic for years. The loser must spend a 24 consecutive hours in either a Waffle House or IHOP. One hour of time is taken off for each pancake or waffle consumed, which sound easy until you get full after the third one and want to take a nap in the middle of the booth.
Comedy Night: All members of the league that did not lose must write out a list of jokes and punchlines for the loser to take to an open-mic stand-up comedy night to perform these jokes. This punishment lies all on the creativity of the league.
A Questionable Transaction : The loser must take a trip to a store with a list of embarrassing items that the league has prepared for him to purchase. Examples of this could be anywhere from ointments to “bedroom equipment.” The possibilities for embarrassment are endless.
Ink of Shame: This one stays with you the longest and could haunt you forever. The loser must get a tattoo of either a banner that says they lost the league during the current year or any other art that the league collectively chooses.
Test Taker : A test for the mind. Last place has to sign up to take a standardized test like the SAT. The other members will decide on a score that they have to achieve, and if they don’t, they have to do it until they pass by their standards. Better study hard!
The Petitioner: The loser must come up with an issue about a league-approved topic and create a petition. They then have to go out in public to ask others to sign it. The only way they get through is if they reach 50 signatures, so your marketing skills need to be in tip-top shape.
When Life Gives You Lemons: The loser has to build their own lemonade stand and set up shop (wherever it is legal to). The league then chooses a certain amount of profit that they have to reach, and the money goes to the other members.
Photoshoot: What is more fun than humiliating your friends? Each league member purchases an outfit of their choosing to dress the loser in, then they have to set up a whole photoshoot and create a calendar full of the results. Creativity is also a factor here, as some examples have included anything from tacky outfits to lingerie. This works best for 12-team leagues.
Fantasy football is already stressful for competitive groups, and this is just one great way to spice things up. Defeating your friends is fun, however, so don’t be shy and bring some of these ideas up during your next draft, if you dare.

LET’S BE REAL
Words by Amiyah Golden
As a blossoming 21-year-old, my post-college fears aren’t limited to career options or how much my first month’s deposit will be — but the overwhelming fear of finding … adult friends.
Scary!
I’m curious as to how my mom made friends as an emerging young adult, 20 years ago, and let’s just say times were different. People existed in reality. They went out, they connected with similar hobbies, and they had the gift of… gab? Interactions were far more personal and personable than they are today.
Although I’m fortunate enough to have found friends throughout college, many of my friends and I are approaching the day we begin to plan the rest of our lives. With that comes the possibility of us separating and starting anew, and with that comes the daunting search to establish a new circle of confidantes.
So, I hate to say it but maybe some of my teachers were on to something with creating uncompromising seating charts that resulted in some impactful friendships.
Sadly, we don’t have the luxury of free matchmaking on behalf of our teachers anymore… or do we?
Jacksonville is a huge city filled with various subcultures of hobbies, entertainment, cuisine, you name it, and as the city continues to grow, more recreational groups are starting to form, which is great (especially for those of us who are extremely socially awkward and terrified of taking the first step)
Local social collectives, like Sunday Social and Jax Social Group, have now become the middleman in your search for friends.
With both groups garnering a social media presence through Instagram reels and some fun group photos that I want to be a part of, they are a great segway into launching into Jacksonville’s adult scene.
Now, you’re probably thinking…. I do not want to frequent another beach bar or nightclub. I know… I get it. That is why you have to check out these two groups!
Sunday Social, for example, hosts events like adult arts and crafts, paint and sips, and cocktail hours. You’re sure to emerge into an environment of fellow individuals embracing their creative side (or discovering that they even have one) and mingle amongst people in a thoughtfully curated space.
Now, if the idea of going to an event is a bit too intimidating right now, Sunday Social serves as a great directory, by providing a list of “hidden gems” in the Jacksonville area. Whether that’s highlighting local restaurants or mentioning the super fun silent discos hosted during Art Walk and other events, it is an accessible way to unearth some stowed-away activities.
Sunday Social is not the only group that generates events in the Jacksonville community, however.
Jax Social Group is a Facebook network that provides consistent events such as beach volleyball, cocktail hours, parties and professional networking events. With people joining from various different cultures, careers, and backgrounds, this group caters to local residents who want to meet unique individuals and build up their contacts.
So, take a risk. Go mingle and have a drink or show your competitive side in some beach fun.
We live in a beautiful city with numerous beautiful people. Log off Bumble BFF and unplug from your parasocial relationships. I hope to see you at one of these events, dancing the night away or embodying the spirit of Bob Ross.
To check out future events, check out Sunday Social at instagram.com/withsundaysocial and Jax Social Group at facebook.com/ jaxsocialgroup.

NAKED CRUISES COMING TO A PORT NEAR YOU
Once upon a time, most cruise ships had clothing optional or topless decks for adults only. This wasn’t always fun for some. I, for one, wasn’t a fan in the early ‘90s when my new husband was refusing to come off the top deck as he obviously was enamored with the sight of female bare breasts basking in the sun on the open ocean.
However, as I have matured, becoming a little less modest and being divorced from that disrespectful peeper for a few decades now, I am actually OK with a topless deck. Who likes tan lines anyway?
Being a frequent cruiser, I was recently contacted by a company promoting a totally nude cruise here in Florida. Of course, I was curious especially as that memory of being furious at my new (now ex-) husband came to mind. Now in my 50s, a topless deck would not be a big deal, and hey, I probably would utilize it to get the best tan I could.
Apparently, a few cruise lines still allow topless sunbathing in designated areas: Celestial Cruises, specializing in Mediterranean voyages; Costa Cruises, owned by Carnival Corporation; and Virgin Voyages (no pun intended), an adults-only cruise line that’s a little bit different than any other. Seriously, I hear they have mermaids in drag and even a tattoo parlor on board.
The particular cruise I mentioned is known as “The Big Nude Boat.” This year’s cruise, which is chartered and not sponsored by the cruise line, takes place aboard the 2,124-passenger Carnival Pride. It departs from Tampa on Feb. 5, 2024 with stops in Cozumel, Costa Maya and Roatán Island.
Everything about The Big Nude Boat is on brand: Ride the waterslide in the buff, try naked yoga, catch the breeze on the zip line, cast your bet in the casino or simply enjoy a cocktail letting it all hang out at the piano bar. And don’t forget to enjoy a naked poolside lunch while feasting on some bomb-dot-com grub from Guy Fieri’s Burger Joint.
The 2025 Big Nude Boat will be on Norwegian Cruise Line, also in February, departing from Miami with stops in Puerto Rico, St. Maarten, Dominica, Martinique and St. Lucia.
Guess what, these cruises aren’t just a bunch of horny swingers. In fact, most of them are geared for travelers who live the naturist lifestyle: those who like to be naked in a non-sexual way. Supposedly, nude cruisers are encouraged to be very discreet in hooking up or risk being kicked off the ship.
If swinging is your thing, there are cruises for that too. Often referred to as “desire cruises” or “bliss cruises,” these charters cater to the more sexually adventurous types and allow public cavorting in designated spaces.
For the nude cruise-curious, there are also clothing-optional cruise ship charters like Bare Necessities that operates on Celebrity Cruises, Holland America and Carnival, including one leaving from JAXPORT. Nudity is at your own discretion; however, all guests must be clothed in the dining rooms. Nude newbies should also know they are required to wear clothing when exiting the ship at ports (though, your friendly cruise director can probably tell you about any nude beaches in the area). It is also considered proper etiquette not to on furniture when naked. Kindly, sit on a towel.
It’s actually no surprise Jacksonville has its own clothing-option cruise since Florida is the No. 1 destination for nudists and naturists with Pasco County holding the “title” of Nudist Capital of the World (at least according to a former president of the American Association for Nude Recreation).

PALETTE POPSTAR:
JANAYA BRADLEY IS A SELF-TAUGHT VISUAL ARTIST, ‘SOMETIMES’
CREATIVE WRITER, MODEL AND FULL-TIME ‘BAD BITCH’
Words and photos by Carmen Macri
“I went to school for creative writing, which is why I’m a ‘sometimes writer,’ “but school beat the passion for writing out of my body,” Bradley recalled. “But I still wanted to be creative, so I decided to change mediums.”
Choosing that path turned out to be one of the best decisions she ever made, and it brought positive impacts to both her own life journey and the lively city of Jacksonville. With her art, Bradley manages to capture all the different emotions that young black women experience in this complex world. And what’s interesting is that each piece of art can be seen in its own special way, and that perception changes based on how the viewer is feeling at the moment they look at it.
There is one piece, in particular — “The Horizon” —Bradley brought with her to our impromptu gallery viewing at Icecapade Frozen Treats in Springfield. She painted the piece amidst a breakup and her initial interpretation of the painting, a woman walking into the ocean with her hand held out while the sun is setting in the background, represents the act of letting someone go and moving on. Her hand extends, a silent farewell, while the sun gracefully sets on this distinct chapter of her story. Though, for other viewers, Bradley recalls her friends saying they view the piece as the woman calling for someone to follow into the sunrise. New beginnings.
“I know what I wanted to convey, but I really wanted it to be ambiguous for the viewer. And it really is like an introspection of ‘do you have a glass half full or a glass half empty mentality?’” Bradley explained. “Because the girl has her hand out and she’s going toward the ocean, the sun is either going down or is it coming up? People that have seen the piece have interpreted it as her asking you to come with her.”
Bradley has been professionally painting since 2015, but she recalls a certain Blues Clues coloring book she was once given as a young girl that sparked her initial interest in art. During her childhood, art served as a pastime. However, as Bradley matured, her paintings transformed into a therapeutic outlet, becoming a means to heal from life’s adversities and emotional wounds. Bradley portrays in her work what it’s like to grow up a Black woman in our society. She includes recurring themes of “Blackness, societal commentary, social identity and self-esteem.”
“It’s just inherent. I’m not even conscious of it. I’m not like, I need to paint this today. Life happens, I go through a breakup, I go through something, and then I’m like, OK, I need to convey this,” Bradley shared. “And I guess I know that I’m finished when I feel like I’ve conveyed what I wanted to convey with that piece.”
And while she intends to sell her work, she explains needing time with her art to experience, appreciate and mourn the paintings before she sends them off. As each painting signifies an important chapter of her life, saying goodbye to those paintings is like closing the book and beginning anew.
Much like any artist, Bradley has had to overcome roadblocks along the way. She mentioned having dozens of paintings that remain unfinished from the beginning of her career.
“I have a lot of pieces that are not done from when I first started because I get frustrated with myself,” she explained. “Because I’m like, ‘I should be better than this,’ and I just abandon it and then start something else.”
Bradley often shares that her motivation to complete ongoing projects stems from her newfound professional footing in the art world, where meeting deadlines is paramount. This journey has compelled her to navigate artistic hurdles and creatively troubleshoot when faced with mental blocks.
“I’ve had at least one or two art shows a month, and I always want to bring something new. I don’t want to bring the same things over and over,” Bradley explained. “So actually having this [deadline] is something I didn’t know about myself until it started happening. I need to have a painting done by so-andso day, so I just have to keep outputting things, and it really helped. I have become more time efficient.”
Something important to note, and previously mentioned: Bradley is self-taught. When it comes to her paintings, she hasn’t received any formal “classical” training. Crafting her distinctive style was a journey solely defined by trial and error. This path did lead to moments of insecurity for Bradley when she embarked on her career. In encounters with fellow local artists, she occasionally felt inadequate due to her lack of art education or formal training. However, these feelings didn’t dampen her spirits for long. She came to recognize that her current position was precisely where she belonged, regardless of where her artistic journey began.
“I felt some type of way about that, like, I’m nothing compared to, you know, people that went to SCAD or went to a classically trained art school, I kind of felt intimidated by that,” Bradley shared. “But having people of all ages, shapes, colors and sizes approaching me and identifying with my work has really been an encouragement.”
Although she had some initial doubts, Bradley has seamlessly integrated herself into Jacksonville’s art community. With numerous events scheduled each month and even a mini gallery in Icecapades, she has left no doubt that she’s a permanent fixture.
And we couldn’t be happier.

FOR THE RECORD …
Words by Ambar Ramirez
Before there were music streaming services, mp3 players and CDs, before we were illegally downloading music onto our desktops, there were cassettes and vinyl records. The latter faced a kiss of death within the music industry during the late 1980s and early 1990s when CDs became the dominant format for recorded music. But in the same way fashion trends from the ’90s and ’70s are popular in our modern age due to renewed interest in the past, vinyl records have resurfaced in recent years. Not only do records offer a unique sound one can only hear when a vinyl spins on a turntable, but they are also super fun to collect. There is something special about finding that one album your dad used to play in the car on the way to school in physical form. And most importantly, it offers something lost within music streaming services like Spotify and Apple Music: listening to the whole album in the original song order the artist intended and carefully crafted.
And because of this multifaceted phenomenon surrounding the popularity of vinyl records, independent record stores have had a comeback as well, be coming cultural hubs and community spaces for music lovers in the process. Naturally, Jacksonville is home to many independent record stores. All argue that they are the best independent record stores, and frankly, they all are. So in no specific order, I present to you some of Jacksonville’s best independent record stores.
WOLFSON RECORDS
The independent record store has been a part of Jacksonville’s music scene for roughly seven years. Wolfson Records was once a warehouse full of vinyl records and equipment located on University Blvd but is now at a smaller location on San Jose Boulevard. Still, the smaller-sized shop in no way portrays the large range of music this record store has. Through the yellow-painted door with a porthole, I was instantly met with loud ambient music that I almost didn’t hear the man sitting at the counter greet us. The space was filled to the brim with records in makeshift record holders made out of cardboard boxes, separated by genre, as well as a whole wall dedicated to cassettes. From rock, pop and new wave to soul R&B and easy listening “[Cheesecake Exotica]”, whatever that means, there is something for everybody in this carefully curated record store. The prices range from $8 to $100 for rare records. I myself walked away with a brand new live Pearl Jam album recorded in Chicago in 1992 for $28. It was actually when I went to check out that I got to know the man behind the counter, the owner himself, Ron “Godfather” Johnston. He mentioned that he got to meet Pearl Jam and Nirvana at his old record shop in Seattle, making me fall in love with this record store even more.

YESTERDAY AND TODAY RECORDS
Yesterday, all their troubles seemed so far away ... Not that I know of any troubles they may have had, but I couldn’t pass up the opportunity to quote The Beatles, especially when this independent record store has an entire section devoted to the original heartthrob boy band. Of course, Yesterday and Today Records has more than just the classics in stock. If the name isn’t telling enough, this record store founded in 1998 and now located in San Marco has a large variety of records. Whether you’re looking for jazz, reggae, rockabilly, disco or experimental, you’ll find it within the impressive space. Unlike Wolfson’s Records, this shop separates most records by last name, while some special genres like The Beatles, country and soundtracks have their own designated bins to sort through. The pricing was a bit cheaper from other stores, but that in no way took away from the value of the records they have. When I found Styx’s “Pieces Of Eight” in the bins labeled $2, I didn’t have a choice but to purchase the gem. In addition to records, the shop has CDs and cassettes, along with equipment like used record players and books for sale. And this is slightly biased but they get bonus points for playing “Pursuit of Happiness” by Kid Cudi as I roamed the seemingly endless store.
• Record Pick : Styx “Pieces Of Eight”
• Buys and trades used records

TIGER RECORDS
One of the newer names in the record store game, Tiger Records opened up last year along with Eraser Records (R.I.P.) and is still running strong. Located in historic Riverside, this independent record store truly lives up to its name — that is if you also imagine a tiger would listen to hardcore metal and punk music. As I entered the shop, it was as if I had teleported to a jungle with tiger memorabilia scattered throughout the store, plants and hardcore metal music filling my ears. As the store is very aesthetically pleasing, pushing a certain image, the diversity of records is just as carefully curated. While most genres can be found at this store, there was definitely a focus on punk, hardcore metal and classic rock. But it was in the “new arrivals” bin that I found a brand new Cocteau Twins “Heaven or Las Vegas” record for $28. Besides the carefully crafted record collection (with prices ranging from $1 to $50), this record store also has vintage T-shirts, stickers, pins, turntables and equipment for sale.
• Record Pick: Cocteau Twins “Heaven or Las Vegas”
• Buys and trades used records

SOUL WAVES VINYL RECORDS
The Beaches definitely aren’t excluded from this list of independent record stores. In a blue wood-paneled building tucked behind the busy traffic of Third Street in Jax Beach is Soul Waves Vinyl Records. Being one of the only independent record stores near the beach, the owner did not shy away from keeping to the beachy theme with surfboards hanging from all corners in the naturally sunlit store. And just as you would expect, this beach record store has vinyls of all genres but specifically country, soul waves and, surprisingly, house music with prices ranging from $1 to $50. Now here’s the kicker and why everyone should visit this establishment. First, let me set the scene. I’m roaming through the new arrivals bins (that doesn’t mean new records, just newly added to the stock) when I came across The Cars’ “The Cars” record for $18, then I found Stevie Nicks’ “Wild Heart” for $17 and even though I was already overwhelmed with deciding which record I would take home, something told me to keep looking. And that is when I found it, Stevie Nicks’ 1981 “Bella Donna” for $18. Since “Edge Of Seventeen” has a special place in my heart, I knew that this was the record I was meant to walk away with. And to add a cherry on top to my already sweet experience, Joe aka the owner of Soul Waves sold the record to me for $10!

HONORABLE MENTION: DJ’S RECORD SHOP
Before I even walked around the corner to the entrance of this five-decadeold establishment, music seeped out into the busy traffic of Edison Avenue and McDuff Avenue South. DJ’s Record Shop is the oldest name in the game of independent record stores in Jacksonville, and its towering stacks of vinyl shows it. And when I say towering stacks of records, I mean it. I would be surprised if more than one person could roam through the narrow path laid out by all the records. Within this cramped space, music lovers will be sure to find gospel, R&B, jazz, rap and reggae, new and old. Not only do records fill the warehouse space: Speakers, stereos, cassettes and CDs are also for sale and reach ceiling heights too … and a 25-cent gumball machine, if you’re into that kind of thing. Regardless of your taste in music, this business is a community staple and has stood as long as it has because of it. Don’t let the overwhelming atmosphere keep you from visiting this Jacksonville gem.

“Holy Waters”
Puma Blue
NEW MUSIC RELEASES
Made
For You By
Amiyah Golden
Described as, “the chronicle of the graciousness within death and rebirth,” UK artist, Jacob Allen, known best by his alias, Puma Blue is sure to entice listeners with his new project, “Holy Waters.” This comes after his 2021 release “In Praise of Shadows” which garnered uplifting reviews.
With quoted musical inspiration from artists, Jeff Buckley and Bjork, this album is sure to dig deep into the soul. Exploring grief in the ways he knows best - through sound. “[Allen] looking each face of grief in the bloodshot eye.” This album is “a gentle affirmation to himself, to the listener, at an album’s close, to keep going.” Although this album has been detailed as Allen’s darkest project yet, there is still a glimmer of light exhibited as “it seems to find Puma Blue in a better place than ever.”
With the inclusion of recordings from his live band, Holy Waters is credited as, “more analogue and experimental than his previous works.”
Allen’s sound is unique and dynamic. With influences of jazz, lo-fi, R&B, and more, this multifaceted artist is able to transport you through a realm of inner exploration.
“At the Roadhouse” is the sixth studio album from the Australian indie band The Paper Kites. With this collective creating music that resides in my “romanticizing my future life” playlist, their new album is sure to provoke the imminent feeling of delightful pleasure.
“At the Roadhouse”
Paper Kites
The 16-track album is filled with, “emotionally charged [songs] with the tradition of storytelling.”
I’m anticipating nothing less than descriptive narratives that resonate with the listeners regardless of familiarity (just because they are truly that good at setting the scene.)
After six years of silence from the UK band, they have finally graced us with their fifth studio album, “Everything is Alive.” Personally speaking, after hearing the release of their single, “The Slab,” I’m beyond ecstatic to hear the rest of this project.
“Everything is Alive”
Slowdive
The merging of production and the live instruments creates an evocative soundscape, transporting me far beyond my wireless headphones. I’m not surprised as Slowdive has always been a heavy hitter for me: constantly creating timeless music, carved from intentions of passion and existence.
The rising pop star has announced the release of her sophomore album, “Guts” with early releases of singles, “Vampire” and “Bad Idea Right?” Both hint at an upbeat teen angst project.
I’m curious to see how “Guts” will compare to Rodrigo’s stellar “Sour” album, which received well-deserved love. Her single “Vampire” has hit number one on Billboard’s Hot 100. Guts also comes with plans for a tour. “I wrote the album with a tour in mind,” said Rodrigo. “They’re all songs I wanted people to be able to scream in a crowd.” With Rodrigo being known for her buoyant sound and her hard-hitting storytelling, I’m excited to see what coming-of-age sagas Rodrigo will reveal with “Guts.” SEPT
R&B powerhouse Teddy Swims releases his debut full-length album “I’ve Tried Everything But Therapy” this September.
Teddy Swims
I remember hearing his single “Lose Control” from the anticipated album in my dance class one night and was absolutely enamored with the lyricism, grit and raw emotions displayed through the song. It sent me on a deep spiral into Swims’ discography. It’s rare to find music in today’s age that holds longevity but with Swims, insane vocal abilities and poetic lyrics, he’s one to watch out for.

A REFLECTION OF ROYALTY: THE COUPLE WHO CAPTIVATES WITH THEIR NEW PROJECT, COLORS
Words by Amiyah Golden and Photo by Wesley “Michael Rakim” Edwards
Local Jacksonville duo Bright Purpel is a new emerging duo that you need to look out for (I mean it… I’m trying to keep you ahead of the curve here!) With songs like “LaLa” that literally embody… sunshine, Bright Purpel keeps me on my toes through their upbeat sound and their immense talent - separately and collectively.
The collaboration is made up of artists Kaylin Peavie, also known by her stage name K.utie and Jeremy Bracken who goes by the moniker Jeremy Ryan.
Although the two are paired as a dynamic blend, both are individual performers in their own right. Having started off their careers as soloists, the twain aren’t new to the spotlight. Kutie has multiple singles that feature an upbeat, groovy sound and an EP, that highlights her range; and Ryan with an extensive discography that shows off the scale of his artistry. The two come together to present their dynamic debut album, ‘Colors.’
I talked to K.utie and Ryan about the inspiration behind their first joint project.
“This was not planned,” both chimed together.
Colors was recorded and written in just three days, as the result of the two exploring music as they usually did.
“We wanted to show different sides of our artistry,” said K.utie “But it wasn’t planned that way. We were just listening to beats and creating and listening to songs in different genres…and it just worked out.”
The album name was inspired after the two envisioned their work through the lens of a painting.
“We had a canvas and we were closing our eyes and [asking] what’s going to speak?” said Ryan. “With having colors, or like having a Crayola box, you have different shades that show different sides of you.”
With the two now being keyholders to this seven-track masterpiece, they knew they had to release it.
With an album now in play, the two now needed a name… something strong… something unique. Something like… Bright Purpel.
K.utie expressed how the name materialized.
“Purple means royalty and we uphold ourselves as [kings] and queens. Bright came from our intellect. We always say to each other ‘From genius to genius’ and we shine. We hope everyone sees our light.”
As many struggle to break through in the music scene— and are unfortunately unsuccessful, the two have continued to strategically set themselves up for longevity; with imaginative music videos, distinctive sound, and the ability to produce their own music.
“I record everything myself,” said Ryan “I brought my own mic, laptop, and program. I’m able to do thousands of songs to tighten what works and what doesn’t.”
Talent can only get you so far, but having an additional dedicated work ethic, brews for the perfect storm of achievement.
Although fame would be an added bonus, it’s not the proprietary fuel behind their artistry.
The two strive for the ability to turn their passion into their sole careers - with financial freedom following closely behind.
“I want to just be able to wake up and create music for a living,” exclaimed K.utie.
With dedicated listeners and warm embraces from the Jacksonville art scene, Bright Purpel is well on their way to reaching their goals.
“The support itself is at an all-time high,” said Ryan. “For us to be able to have our own individual listeners and then combine that, was really a true blend of having our fans [come together.]”
Although the two didn’t have plans to form a group initially both citing that, “none of [this] was planned,” The collaboration was inevitable, as K.utie had been acting as background vocals in many of Ryan’s songs and Ryan vice versa.
The synergy they formed when combining forces, was a chemistry unmatched.
What also makes this duo unique is their interpersonal connection to each other. The two have been in a relationship for a few years now after meeting at their Corporate America job and bonding over their love for music.
“We met in 2018 while working in the same group at work,” said K.utie. “We became friends and then we found out we both make music.”
Ryan then invited K.utie to an event he was hosting at the time, Waves— a showcase for local artists created by Ryan.
K.utie was one of the first artists that Ryan booked for one of his first shows. Many studio sessions and countless happy hours later, the two found themselves extremely fond of each other, blossoming into a beautiful connection that is still holding strong today.
While the Jacksonville artists are known for their musical capabilities, they refuse to confine themselves to the box that encapsulates them strictly as musicians. With both being featured in short films and Ryan recently creating an anthropology mini-series, both are well on their way to becoming superstars.
Their dire love for the arts beacons through every song, every film, and every interaction. With inspiration from names such as Beyonce, Michael Jackson, and Will Smith, the two continue to work to establish a brand unique and authentic to themselves while still looking up to these legends.
Although confident enough, I can say the two will not be looking up for long, as they will be staring at a reflection that parallels their future successes as they continue to cultivate their craft.
Make sure to check out Bright Purpel’s newest project, Colors and their individual discographies through the links below.

SOME THINGS IN THIS LIFE ARE MEANT TO BE: NOAH HUNTON’S JOURNEY TOWARD SUCCESS
Words by Carson Rich
48 Folio Weekly Southern Sounds
Southern Sounds
Noah Hunton is a rising singer/songwriter who has always had dreams of being at the top. Since the time he picked up a guitar in the sixth grade, he has always envisioned himself on the big stage like the ones before him. A childhood filled with the top country artists playing throughout his home brought this idea to life.
At a young age, Noah Hunton loved playing music, so much so that it drove his parents crazy everytime he would ask for a new guitar or something new to learn. This drive kept moving along as he began to play during family gatherings and anywhere else he could show off his vocal skills. His high school years made some of his aspirations turn into a reality, as he got the chance to open for the legendary Josh Turner at the Strawberry Festival in Plant City. From then on he went to play various local shows to really kickstart his career.
After moving on from bouncing back and forth from around 10 different jobs trying to pay the bills, he dropped them in search of a new way of life. He started booking more shows, working his way up to bigger festivals, hustling day and night to get his name out. He asked local businesses to promote his music through a sponsorship to help fund new events. This idea took new heights soon enough as he wanted to create his own form of art, taking trips to Nashville to a recording studio looking for that spark.
Catching up to now, he runs almost every aspect of his career and is steadily moving toward the place he has always dreamed of being — at the top. He does all of his own merchandising and marketing. And since he’s not yet signed to a label, he still has full control of his own releases. Growing up his family had full support of him and still does, and now he mainly relies on a tight circle that includes his fiancée, producer, friends and family.
When discussing his view of his own music, he speaks very highly of the amount of versatility in his vocal range. Listening to his catalog, there are instances that remind the listener of older Josh Turner songs, but others sound like Tim McGraw with his higher tone of voice. The storytelling aspect of his songs also sticks out, and that is usually his main focus when getting out the pen and pad.
Hunton said, “All these songs are like a heartfelt message from me that can reach other people, but also, you know, other people can relate to it in different situations. So it’s very open to different, you know, realms of thinking.”
It’s very apparent that most of his songs have meaning to him and his personal life with a great example like “Meant to Be.” This tune screams that 2000s era of country music that everyone knows and loves, and to top it all off, it was written as a love note to his now-fiancée. He has now released 12 singles on streaming platforms and hopes to gain traction in the near future to get to the next level. He had always had dreams of playing at the Grand Ole Opry, and now he is finally getting that chance, since he was nominated by the Joseph Music Awards for Male Vocalist of the Year for Modern Country.
Always being yourself and working hard to achieve your dreams no matter what anyone says has always been the message that Hunton wants to give his fans, which seems to be exactly what he’s been doing his whole life. The sky’s the limit for Noah Hunton on his journey to become one of the greats, and so far he is on the right path.

RAISING THE BAR: 1912
Words by Amiyah Golden
The breeze of the Atlantic Ocean is just one of many sensory components to your experience at 1912 Ocean Bar & Rooftop.
With a plethora of menu options including tapas, as well as a raw bar that embraces local seafood, 1912 is Jacksonville’s newest hotspot for feasting and fellowship with friends, new and old alike. Located at the Sawgrass Marriott Golf Resort & Spa in Ponte Vedra Beach, Florida, 1912 provides a stunning view of the skyline and the waves meeting right at the cusp, wherever you sit, you will be met with an idyllic view.
Making sure no stone was left unturned when it came to details, manager Todd Hickey and his team prioritized creating a space for diners that highlighted the connection between food and nature.
With the installment of innovative technology, 1912 included a system called nanowalls, allowing for anl fresco dining experience. Nanowalls allow the wall unit to completely open up, allowing you to enjoy the elements while eating fresh seafood and sipping on refreshing cocktails.
If you’re not feeling the Florida climate that day, no worries because 1912 has taken that into account as well, providing an indoor dining option as well.
1912 doesn’t just provide guests with the aesthetics. It also surpasses expectations when it comes to the food and drinks.
For all my seafood cynics, don’t worry 1912 has got you covered with the options of “fire breads” out of their very own pizza ovens, an array of assorted hand-picked meats and cheeses from their “butcher block” and their unique takes on some familiar bites off from their starters menu.
Oh, and for the vegans and vegetarians out there, they also kept you in mind with their very own vegan meatloaf that incorporates an heirloom tomato sauce, crispy onions, charred vegetables and pickled lima beans over roasted smashed fingerling potatoes.
With no expense spared, 1912’s cocktail program allows for the immersion into fusions of some classic cocktails, along with some new signature creations on behalf of general manager Asia Owens and the talented bartenders at 1912. Hickey highlighted some notable drinks such as the A1A Margarita which incorporates freshly squeezed citrus blends of lemon, lime and orange juice, as well as a Bourbon Smoke that features hand-selected bourbon from Buffalo Trace. 1912 also highlights Eagle Rare bourbon. Mixing bitter pineapple, cherry smoked wood and their very own bitters, it’s a unique experience sipping bourbon that’s smoked right in front of you. For those seeking something sweeter, Rose Colored Glasses — grapefruit, rose botanical vodka, Campari, lemon garnish and an edible flower — should hit the spot.
The bar has also partnered up with local brewery Intuition Ale Works to create an exclusive beer called The Waverly, a light Czech pilsner with notes of lemon.
Although Sawgrass is known for accommodating a certain type of clientele, Hickey made it known that 1912 is for everyone. There is no fancy dress code or elite status that you have to possess to dine here. All you need is a hungry belly to come and partake.
For all the locals, make sure you include 1912 in your future staycation plans, and for all those visiting, keep this rooftop restaurant on your list of places to nosh at.

WHERE DOPE SANDOS AND HUNGRY RANDOS ASSEMBLE TO FEAST:
LONE WOLF CO.
Words and photos by Su Ertekin-Taner
I half expect a member of KISS or one of those Harley-Davidson bikers that travel in herds to enter behind me when I walk into punk-inspired sandwich shop Lone Wolf Co. The edgy decorations that adorn the walls of the venue suggest as much. The Punk’s Not Dead flag, wolf’s skull mural, coffin-shaped Little Red Riding Hood-esque mural, and three-eyed wolf logo are all artistic nods to the type of counterculture that KISS and Harley-Davidson represent. And as punk music reverberates throughout the restaurant, I know I’ve struck gold on the unconventional with Lone Wolf Co.
Lone Wolf Co. first opened its doors seven months ago and quickly became a rendezvous point where dope sandos (sandwiches) and hungry randos (randoms) assemble to feast. Today, I am one of those randos and I am ready to partake in a eulogy to the conventional with Lone Wolf’s sandwiches.
I begin by perusing the eccentric menu. While a quick check of the Lone Wolf Co. Instagram indicates they are “NOT A DELI!!,” I still assume an Italian sub, Reuben or bologna sandwich will have made the menu cut. But my conjecture was soon proven wrong. Maybe, I should’ve listened to the all caps messaging.
Instead, the menu — much like the venue’s decor — pays tribute to punk and rock. Blitzkrieg Bop is a chicken, pepperoni and bacon-based sando (and a song by the Ramones). Psycho Killer offers a rich combination of pork, mac and cheese, and provolone and a reminder of the Talking Heads’ hit. And while Against the Grain may be a vegan sando packed with roasted bbq tempeh, green beans, pickled ginger onions and lettuce, it’s also the title of Bad Religion’s 1990 album. Other notable rock-punk sandwich tributes include Mind Over Matter, Weight of the World, Seeing Red and Divine Intervention.
In total, there are 15 tribute sandwiches that rotate regularly plus some
As I teeter between two or three options of sandwiches, I feel as if I’m attempting to pick a personality to inhabit while dining. Should I be slightly supernatural with a Bark at the Moon or greedy with a Gimmie, Gimmie, Gimmie or confident with a Walk the Walk? I’m feeling confident today … with a side of curly fries.
The Walk the Walk sandwich includes fried chicken, queso, everything-seasoned bacon, slaw and Hot Cheetos crumbles. I’m intrigued by this quirky, modern flavor combination. I begin to —pun intended — wolf the sandwich down. Immediately, the Southern flavors of the fried chicken and slaw dominate my palate, as expected. Unpredicted, however, is the balance in this sando. The background rock music reaches a dissonant passage, but this sandwich is nothing but harmony. The crunch of the bacon and fried chicken is undercut by the creaminess of the slaw now spilling out of the corners of the sando, and the French Pantry bread is a fitting canvas for this art. The fresh, warm curly fries dipped in the original spicy, ranch-based Wolf sauce add a playful element to the meal.
While the sandwich’s size seems meager in comparison to the foot-long subs found in delis, I am full in a few bites, so I stop wolfing it down and, instead, pick at the sandwich with the occasional overconfident bite like a rabbit. Eventually, I decide to save the other half for another time when I am ready for a taste of punk again. I’m sure it will be soon. In fact, I’m sure I will crave these counterculture sandos after the ride home and again, the coming day.
Lone Wolf Co. has revolutionized the sandwich. No longer is the sandwich a meal for those shirking a rich meal or the staple of a stereotypical work lunch. Simply by referring to sandwiches as “sandos,” the restaurant has broken down sandwich conventions and culture. The sandwich can be spunky, referencing music and brimming with contemporary ingredient blends as Lone
