WELCOME TO THE 3RD ANNUAL SING OUT LOUD FESTIVAL! --------------------------------------------------------------
Over the last couple of years we have truly learned how resilient and passionate this community really is. After weathering multiple hurricanes, we watched people from all around come together and help their neighbors get back on their feet, provide essential food, shelter, clothes and anything else that was needed. We knew that during this time one of the important things we could do to help lift people’s spirits was to make sure that the show(s) went on! And last year, it certainly felt critical to not only provide FREE live music events all around town, but to also make sure all the local artists, event crew, bartenders, servers, hotels, etc. were able to get back to work as quickly as possible. Here we are a year later and the festival and the community feels stronger and more passionate than ever! All of you attending, performing, working or supporting in any way are part of the great overall musical ecosystem that continues to establish the greater St. Augustine area as THE MOST celebrated and preeminent music destination in the Southeast United States. This year we have, again, tried to diversify the lineups, genres, venues and activities in hopes that there is something that really strikes a chord with you. I hope everyone has a wonderful time this year and gets to experience something new, wild or exciting. In the meantime, enjoy the music, tip your bartenders and servers, be kind to each other and always:

The Sing Out Loud Festival would like to thank the following Festival Partners for their contribution to the 2018 Sing Out Loud Festival, one of the largest free music festivals ever held in Florida!

Jason Isbell and The 400 Unit Saturday, September 22 at the St. Augustine Amphitheatre If there’s an heir apparent to the altcountry throne, it’s Jason Isbell. From his earliest days as a member of the Drive-By Truckers, to his current work with The 400 Unit, Isbell takes our preconceived notions of what we call Americana and even Southern Rock and bends them into something altogether new. In the last decade the Green Hill, Alabama native has released a half dozen studio albums and three live recordings, scoring two Grammy Awards in the process. At turns plaintive and raucous, the songs of Jason Isbell smack squarely in the tradition of rock-poets like Bob Dylan,
Bruce Springsteen, and Neil Young. Southern roots remain evident in Isbell’s work. Songs like “Down in a Hole,” “Speed Trap Town,” and “If We Were Vampires” are stark stories filled with small town heroes and villains, broken people on the mend and redemptionseeking ramblers. Isbell’s backing band the 400 Unit is a five-piece group from Muscle Shoals, Alabama who are the perfect foil in bringing Isbell’s millennial honky tonk tunes to life. Isbell was the 2017 artist-in-residence at the Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum in Nashville and guest stars on John Prine’s latest, The Tree of Forgiveness.

The Decemberists Saturday, September 22 at the St. Augustine Amphitheatre In the ever-changing world of independent music, The Decemberists remain always in season. Since 2000, the Portland, Oregon five-piece have been creating mini-symphonies of baroque pop that have made them de facto darlings of the indie rock scene. After releasing two albums on the celebrated Northwest label Kill Rock Stars, The Decemberists signed to Capitol Records, a move that maintained their unique sound while exposing them to a much larger audience. Many of the band’s tunes touch on folk and historical themes, along with nods to obscure references and heroes. In the last decade, The Decemberists have well established themselves as a cerebral
and playful band that still knows how to rock. In concert, The Decemberists encourage audience participation and the group is known to perform minitheatrical productions, only reinforcing their already eclectic worldview. Their major label debut, 2006’s The Crane Wife, topped countless “Best Of” lists and appearances on Late Night with Conan O’Brien, Jimmy Kimmel! Live!, and Parks and Recreation and The Colbert Report have made the band one of the more visible indie artists working in the mainstream today. The band’s latest, I’ll Be Your Girl, was inspired by the aftermath of the post2016 election.

BETTY GRIFFIN CENTER SPOTLIGHT For more than 35 years, Betty Griffin Center has provided shelter and support for local victims of domestic violence and sexual assault and their children. Betty Griffin Center is here to ensure those in danger get immediate help, counseling and the services necessary to become self-sufficient and live safe, productive lives. Today, Betty Griffin Center shelters more than 550 people each year, operates a 24-hour help line, provides professional counseling for victims of domestic and sexual abuse and provides age-appropriate violence prevention training. The nonprofit agency also has a rape care unit at Flagler Hospital, and victim advocates who assist survivors in the court system, when necessary. In addition, Betty Griffin Center operates two thrift stores at Julington Square and Anastasia Island to assist in funding the agency’s ongoing mission. While the Center relies on charitable donations every year to fund operations, in 2018 they urge the public to consider supporting the Center through the challenge grant graciously offered by the Delores Barr Weaver Fund. The fund will match up to $100,000 given by new donors, current donors who increase their gift or past donors who haven’t given to the Center for the last three years. To date, the 2018 Sing Out Loud Festival has raised over $90,000 through donation tickets to the September 22 Betty Griffin Center Benefit Showcase featuring Jason Isbell and The 400 Unit, The Decemberists and Lucero at the St. Augustine Amphitheatre.
If you or someone you know is being abused, call the Betty Griffin Center 24-hour Help Line at (904) 824-1555.

against me! Sunday, September 23 at the St. Augustine Amphitheatre When Against Me! sprung from the fertile punk rock scene in Gainesville, Florida in 1997, the band quickly established themselves as a force to be reckoned with. While many of their peers played it safe with the accepted punk rock blueprint, Against Me! explored folkleaning flavors along with an avowed leftist, anarcho-punk ideology. The band has released a series of well-received EPs and full-length albums, with themes that touch on global politics and the call of individuality. On the local tip, band founder Laura Jane Grace wrote the band’s 2010 album White Crosses
when she and her family lived here in St. Augustine. In 2014, Against Me! released Transgender Dysphoria Blues, which deeply chronicled Grace’s experiences with gender dysphoria and coming out as a transgender woman. Against Me! continues to prove that “punk’s not dead” while assuring us it’s in a constant state of evolution. In the 20 years since the band’s inception, Grace and her sonic cohorts continue to reveal the freedom, resonance, and inherent power of the DIY sensibility and community.

lucero Saturday, September 22 at the St. Augustine Amphitheatre Twenty years in and Lucero show no signs of slowing down. The Memphisborn five-piece continues to travel a storied road fueled by country, soul, gospel, and good old punk rock. Band classics like “I’ll Just Fall,” “What Else Would You Have Me Be?” and “My Best Girl” tackle the big stuff: loneliness, heartache, addiction, and a spiritual dose of the blues. Ben Nichols’ gruff vocal delivery is met with the band’s raw feel, bridging the gap between Stax records and modern day altcountry swagger. While they’ve released a series of impressive albums, Lucero is arguably first and foremost
a live band. Their most recent album, Among the Ghosts, was recorded at Sam Phillips Recording, the legendary Memphis studio where legends Elvis Presley, Jerry Lee Lewis, and Johnny Cash, B.B. King created seminal classics. Recorded live and with the band playing in one room, Among the Ghosts captures Lucero’s fierce energy and lyrical power in peak form. Over the course of the album’s 10 tracks, Lucero takes us on an extended trip into the band’s deep roots, where Southern Gothic and southern soul sway side by side under a flickering neon bar light.

Leftover Salmon Sunday, September 23 at the Ponte Vedra Concert Hall For nearly 30 years, jam band heavyweights Leftover Salmon have been creating inventive and eclectic music that definitely swims against the stream. The six-piece combo perform a signature mix of bluegrass, country, straight-up rock and roll, and Zydeco that they like to call “Polyethnic Cajun Slamgrass.” In lesser hands, that could be a recipe for coyness or disaster. But in the anything-goes musical gumbo of Leftover Salmon, a banjo solo might be met by a synthesizer freakout, only to then be matched by a percussion solo, and it all somehow works. Since 1993 the band has released 10
well-received albums, including their latest, Something Higher. However, it’s Leftover Salmon’s live shows that have garnered the Boulder, Coloradospawned band a tie-dyed, devoted audience that demands the kind of hours-long, jam-heavy shows where the band seems to truly thrive. And while they are top-flight players, the band never lets showy licks get in the way of a good time. Leftover Salmon has sought its own level when working with others, forgoing showbiz names in lieu of collaborations with Waylon Jennings and ‘90s college rock kings, Cracker.

Rising Appalachia Friday, September 21 on the Backyard Stage at the St. Augustine Amphitheatre Rising Appalachia are carriers of the flame for the world folk scene. While bandmates Leah and Chloe Smith are family, they’re hardly just a showbiz sister act. From their earliest days busking in the French Quarter, the Atlanta natives began fusing traditional Appalachian music with gospel, soul, and hip-hop, a melodic and rhythmic exploration that continues to the present day. Between the two of them, these multi-instrumentalists play an array of global instruments, from banjos and fiddles to kalimbas and washboards and have released a half dozen releases featuring the sisters’ soaring harmonies and unique Americana-meets-world-music sound. They’ve combined their musical
and lyrical worldview with various collaborators as the roving Rise Collective, a 21st-century caravan of activists, poets, educators, yogis, fire spinners, and circus performers. Ardent activists, Rising Appalachia coined the term “Slow Music Movement,” where the band works in conjunction with farm groups, non-profits, and educational organizations to foster grassroots outreach programs; while their 2016 “Fertile Grounds” tour encouraged their fans to check out permaculture farming. Nomadic spirits at heart, Rising Appalachia perform at venues and festivals around the globe, offering music that highlights our culture similarities into a truly oneworld sound.

Southern Avenue Friday, September 21 on the Backyard Stage at the St. Augustine Amphitheatre Southern Avenue are on the vanguard of the next wave of talent rising up from the ever-fertile and soul-rich music scene of Memphis. Although they’ve only been together since 2015, the band has garnered much attention for their high-energy spin on electric blues. Following the band’s formation, Southern Avenue wasted no time in hitting the road, relentlessly touring the States and Europe, playing clubs and festivals and representing Memphis in the 2016 International Blues Challenge competition. Southern Avenue’s soulful blues quest went full circle when the legendary Memphis R&B label, Stax Records released the band’s 2017 self-
titled debut. Produced by Kevin Houston (Lucero, Patty Griffin) and featuring guest appearances by Luther Dickinson of the North Mississippi Allstars and Marc Franklin of the Bo-Keys, the album’s 10 songs ran the gamut from ballads to gutbucket boogie, capped off by a solid rendition of Ann Peebles’ classic “Slipped, Tripped and Fell in Love.” The band’s lineup - vocalist Tierinii Jackson, sister Tikyra Jackson on drums, Ori Naftaly (guitar), Jeremy Powell (keyboards), and Gage Markey (bass) – bring both a reverence for the blues and the undeniable skills to keep the music moving forward.

war on women Sunday, September 23 at the St. Augustine Amphitheatre War On Women describe themselves as “Feminist AF. Formed in 2011, this Baltimore-based, co-ed/feminist hardcore punk band defines the unified stance, imminent force, and radical resistance of the current punk music community. While some current artists shy away from rocking the boat in talking politics or current global issues, War On Women are fully prepared to sink the fleet. Taking their cue from radicalized agitprop punks, War On Women directly address topics like sexual assault, the new breed of global racism, street harassment, crazed gun violence, transphobia, and women’s
reproductive rights. Their on-point (and at times, humorous) lyrics issue a battle cry in a current political climate that continues to attempt to ignore, mute, and even silence voices that dare to speak out. Hailed for their high-speed thrash and intense live performances, in 2015 War On Women released their debut. Their sophomore effort, Capture the Flag, is a continuation of their hybrid of old-school riot grrrl rage and warp-speed thrash. Festivalgoers looking to witness a band that is both confrontational and inclusive would do well to check out War On Women.
