How To Register Four Easy Ways to Register By Mail If submitting the registration by mail, complete the Continuing Education Registration Form found on the last page of the schedule. The Continuing Education Registration Form may also be printed from the website at http://www. johnstoncc.edu/pdfs/ce_regform.pdf. Mail the completed Continuing Education Registration Form in with your check or money order to the address shown on the form. If paying by credit card, you will be contacted for your information. Do not mail cash. By Fax Fax registrations to (919) 989-7862. Faxed registrations must be paid by credit card. You will be contacted for your credit card information. In Person You may also register in person by coming by the registration window at Student Services located in the Wilson Building to complete the registration form. After registering, payment can be made at the Cashier’s Window beside the Bookstore in the Wilson Building. Hours for registration and payment are Monday – Thursday from 8:00 am – 5:00 pm and Friday from 8:00 am – 3:00 pm Students attending classes at the Cleveland Center may register during walk-in hours of Monday – Thursday from 8:00 am – 8:00 pm and Friday from 8:00 am – 3:00 pm. For further Cleveland campus information, you may call 919-9892128. Students attending classes at the Workforce Development Center may register from 8:00 am – 9:00 pm Monday – Thursday. Online Registration You may search, register, and pay for classes online by simply clicking on the WebAdvisor link located on the JCC Home Page, and click on “Continue to WebAdvisor”. Next, select the Continuing Education button and then select “Register and Pay for Continuing Education Classes”. You may search for classes using a keyword, course name, start or end dates, location, or instructor’s last name. Select the class you want, and click “submit”. Complete the registration process, and pay for the class by credit card only.
Who May Register?
If you are 18 years old or older, you may register for a course.
Under the current law, North Carolina does not allow students under the age of 16 to register for Continuing Education courses, with the exception of self-supporting community service courses that may be offered in the summer.
Registration for In-Service Law Enforcement Officers

When to Register
Pre-registration is a necessity! Due to limited space in some classes, advanced registration is required for all courses with the exception of Basic Skills. All classes/instructors provided are subject to change due to specific circumstances and low enrollment may result in class cancellation. All pre-registered students will be notified in advance of any changes to classes. If you are not pre-registered, you may not receive notice of changes. Students must register at least FIVE CALENDAR DAYS prior to the class start date.
After you Register
Plan to attend the classes for which you registered as scheduled. You will not be contacted unless there is a change in the class; for example, if the class is postponed, full or canceled.
Fees/Books/Supplies
Registration fees, which are listed with each class description, do not include the cost of textbooks or supplies. Fees are set by the NC General Assembly and are based on the number of contact hours for each course. Some of the courses listed in this schedule require textbooks that may be purchased at the JCC Bookstore. Please contact the Bookstore for operating times or check our website. Refund Policy
A student who officially withdraws (in writing) from a course prior to the first class meeting is eligible for a 100% refund. A student may be eligible to receive a 75% refund of the registration fee if the student officially withdraws (in writing) from the course after the class begins but prior to the 10% census date (10% of total course hours). A student would not be entitled to receive a refund if he/she withdraws after the 10% census date (more than 10% of total course hours) of the course. Courses offered as self-supporting are not eligible for a refund as these programs are funded by registration fees collected. Students are eligible for a 100% refund if the class is canceled by the College.
Course Repetition Policy
A special provision of the State General Assembly concerning course repetition became effective July 1, 1993. Students who take an occupational extension course more than TWICE within a FIVEYEAR period shall pay their cost for the course at a rate based on current contact hour value. Students shall be primarily responsible for monitoring course repetitions; however, the College shall review records and charge students full cost for courses taken more than twice. (Senior citizens who are legal residents of North Carolina and who wish to enroll in an occupational extension course will not be required to pay for taking the course twice. Senior citizens who take an occupational extension course more than TWICE within a FIVEYEAR period shall pay their cost for the course.) Students may repeat occupational extension courses an unlimited number of times if the repetitions are required for certification, licensure, or recertification.

An Important Message for North Carolina Senior Citizens
Effective July1, 2010, Senior citizens age 65 or older who are qualified as legal residents of North Carolina are waived from paying a registration fee for one course of noncredit instruction per academic semester. This does not include self supporting (SS) courses. Senior citizens are required to submit a registration form, to pay any required technology fees, and to buy any required supplies or textbooks. **All classes/instructors provided are subject to change due to specific circumstances, and low enrollment may result in class cancellation. All registered participants will be notified in either event. Please refer to the Continuing Education Refund Policy. Be sure to register before the class starts! Late registration is discouraged, and you may not be allowed to enter the class after the starting date.

Human Resource Development Employability Skills Training FEE WAIVED to Qualified Participants HRD Tuition and Fee Waiver Human Resource Development provides skills assessment services, employability skills training and career development activities for adults who are unemployed or underemployed. BIOTECHNOLOGY BioWork/AAS Bioprocess Technology Information Session Schedule JCC has scheduled required information sessions for anyone interested in Biotechnology Courses & the AAS in Bioprocess Technology degree. BioWork Certificate Program (Level I) (136 Hrs)
Students who complete this 136-hour BioWork Certificate course will gain the basic skills and general knowledge needed for entry-level process technicians in Bioprocessing, Pharmaceutical, and Chemical Manufacturing, as well as, participate in the Human Resource Development aspect of the course. The course includes nine (9) modules such as Quality, Measurements, Transforming Matter, Growing Living Cells, Safety, Sterile Processes, Process Control, and Nuts and Bolts. There are exams at the end of each module. Additionally, this course will cover all aspects of the job search in the Biotechnology arena, including a job market overview, job search tools and strategies, resume preparation, and interviewing practice. Computer literacy, teamwork, time management, and problem solving are also incorporated in the course. To gain admission to the BioWork course, each student must show proficiency in reading and math skills, as indicated by the Accuplacer assessment test. In addition, interested students must attend one of the regularly scheduled Information Sessions at the Workforce Development Center. The course has limited space. Advanced Biomanufacturing Training (Level II) (NEW!! 148 Hrs)
This course is the next in succession to BioWork (Level I). With advanced training, you will be a step above others in knowledge level of the Biomanufacturing and increase your hiring potential! This course offers 4 separate certifications and also allows you to take the NC State Examination in Biomanufacturing. Currently, JCC is the only college that offers this combination course. Certifications include: Advanced Bioprocessing Certificate (ABC) (64 Hrs) Students who complete all 6 modules (64 hours) of this advanced certificate program will gain knowledge in advanced Bioprocessing practices, including safety in Biomanufacturing environments, advanced quality systems, applied chemical processes, monitoring process variables in Biomanufacturing, applied sterile processing, and applied cell culture. This course has been customized for current industry needs. Advanced Bioprocessing Certificate Program will allow students to gain the necessary skills and knowledge needed for advanced process technician positions in Bioprocessing, Pharmaceutical, and Chemical Manufacturing. Aseptic Training Certificate (60 Hrs) This 60 hour training course prepares individuals to work as process technicians in aseptic pharmaceutical, Biomanufacturing and chemical manufacturing environments. The course encompasses gowning for aseptic environments, environmental monitoring, and product fill line operations. Students receive much hands-on application training and become comfortable with the heart of biomanufacturing: production. BioProcess Technician State Exam REVIEW COURSE (24 Hrs) This course provides extensive review before taking the NC State Examination in Biomanufacturing, a growing requirement trend for industries. Pathways to BioWork (72 Hrs)
This 72-hour Pre-BioWork course focuses on the basic skills and general knowledge needed to enter the BioWork Certificate Program. It will work in the areas of Biomathematics, Reading and Science for the industry, career exploration and job preparation. To gain admission to the course, each student must have reading and

math skills at the 7th grade level or higher as indicated by an assessment test. Attending an Information Session is required for admittance. Aseptic Maintenance (Level III) (60 Hrs)
This 60 hour training course prepares students to work in pharmaceutical, biomanufacturing and chemical manufacturing environments as maintenance, instrumentation, calibration, and other trade technicians. The course encompasses gowning for aseptic environments, environmental monitoring, and product fill line operations. Topics of the course include understanding dedicated equipment, cleaning tools and specialty equipment, cGMP, and FDA regulated environments. Computer literacy, teamwork, time management, problem solving, and situational applications are incorporated in the course. There are exams given throughout the course. Student must have previous trade technician experience, or have completed or be enrolled in a trade program. Will be offered in Summer 2013!

This 24 hour course is specifically for those who are seeking to learn the keyboard through touch-typing. Emphasis is placed on mastery of the keyboard. Lead Safety for Renovation, Repair, and Painting (RRP) Initial Training (8 Hours) The Environment Protection Agency’s 2008 regulation of lead-safe practices requires contractors working in homes built before 1978 where children under six or pregnant women reside, to take the proper precautions to work lead-safe. These precautions include minimizing dust, containing the work area, and conducting a thorough clean up to reduce the potential exposure associated with disturbing lead-based paint. The Federal Government banned lead-based paint for residential use in 1978 but many homes in the U.S. still contain it. Renovation activities that disturb lead-based paint can create lead hazards that have wide-ranging effects on health, from behavioral problems and learning disabilities, to seizures and even death. Those most at risk are children under six years old.

Upon completion of any of these options, it is the responsibility of the teacher assistant to notify the Continuing education Division at Johnston Community College to receive a certificate verifying their completion. This certificate may then be taken to the Personnel Office at the Board of Education for the pay increment to be processed (Pay increases as the budget allows). The following classes are designed to fulfill Plan A requirement of the Johnston County Board of Education for the job of Teacher Assistant for those individuals who are not currently employed by the school system. The courses focus on the concepts of becoming an effective Teacher’s Assistant studying subjects such as classroom management, discipline, EC issues and laws, computers, and more. SMALL BUSINESS CENTER The Small Business Center is located at the Johnston County Workforce Development Center in Clayton. The Center’s mission is to support the entrepreneur in business start-up and to provide assistance to existing business owners to promote their success. Mammography Seminar-Initial Training (30.5 Hours) This 30.5 hour program is the Initial Training required for Radiology Tech desiring to administer Mammograms. Classes are held in the Radiology Department in the Health Science Building. Classes involve theory and positioning techniques (no clinical). Upon completion of the program, students will perform, with their employer, the required 100 Mammograms (student’s responsibility) which are required to apply for the Certification Examination. Emergency Medical Technician Intermediate is a 296 hour program (200 hours didactic; 96 clini-
cal hours) Class begins in January and finishes in May. This class is offered on a “shift-friendly” schedule. The student is required to come to class one day per week; on Monday OR Thursday. There are Saturday and Sunday classes each month with the exception of January. The student will be given a syllabus the first day of class to meet weekend class scheduling requirements. Emergency Medical Technician – Paramedic
The EMT-Paramedic is the highest level of training in the pre-hospital setting. Students are trained in the use of complex medical equipment,such as EKG’s, and are capable of administering medication , both orally and intravenously. Students receive certifications in numerous additional practices such as ACLS, PALS, AMLS, and PHTLS. Students learn the necessary skills needed in today’s ever evolving medical field to recognize, treat, and reverse life threatening conditions. The paramedic course is a year-long course divided into two divisions with a total of 1,132 hours; 632 classroom hours, 500 clinical hours. Tactical Medical Operator
Tactical Medical Operator is a 5-day, 48 hour; hands on intensive program which will address current issues faced by both law enforcement and emergency medical services in the tactical environment. Recent events such as Aurora, Colorado, the North Hollywood Bank shootout, and Virginia Tech are challenging to the current relationship between law enforcement and EMS. In addition, the expanding role of law enforcement in combating terrorism after 9/11 has put those on the front lines into more potentially explosive and dangerous situations. National Registry Refresher / NR Transition Course / NC State Paramedic Refresher EMS Education offers continuing education courses that are consistent with National Registry requirements for both National Registry Paramedic recertification and exam preparation.
The course is a 72-hour NC approved paramedic refresher, NR Prep/Transition course that will be offered the 3rd weekend of each month, three separate sections, starting the weekend of January 18, 19, 20 2013. Other weekends include February 15, 16, 17 and March 16, 17, 18. Classes will meet 8 hours a day for a total of 24 hours per weekend/ Section. A separate National Registry Prep and test will be held April 20-21, 2013. The Registration fee will be $65.00 per section. Total for all 3 sections = $195.00. Certified Intensive Care Provider
This critical care certification is offered to Paramedics, Registered Nurses, Physician’s Assistants and Respiratory Therapists with at least one year of experience. Johnston Community College is a registered site with the Cleveland Clinical EMS Academy. Course requirements include and on-line pre-course, classroom sessions, and 36 hours of clinical in the critical care setting. Course completion allows students to sit for the FP-C exam. Both ground and air transport considerations for the critical care environment are addressed through active participation in lecture and skills based instruction. Defensive Driving Programs (SS*) If you have been charged with a traffic violation, you may be eligible to take one of the Defensive Driving programs offered at Johnston Community College. Two defensive driving courses are offered (SS*): • Attitudinal Dynamics of Driving 8-Hour (Red School) • StreetSafe Attitudinal Dynamics of Driving 8-hour Red School (SS*) If you have been charged with certain traffic violations, you may qualify for the Attitudinal Dynamics of Driving 8-hour Defensive Driving Course through Johnston Community College. This program is offered by the Johnston County District Attorney’s Office, Johnston Community College, and the Safety and Health Council of North Carolina. DDC-ADD is an 8-hour course that addresses the attitudes and behaviors of the negligent driver. Interactive exercises, lectures, visuals and thought provoking discussions are used to teach responsibility on the road. StreetSafe (SS*) If you have been charged with certain traffic violations, you may qualify for the StreetSafe Program. StreetSafe is made available to you by the Johnston County District Attorney’s Office, Johnston Community College, and the S Solutions Incorporated (SSI). StreetSafe is a 4½ hour course that is taught by law enforcement and fire personnel. Under their supervision,
students will witness and experience: Speed Control, Tailgating, Distractions, Alcohol Education, and Seatbelt Convincer. There will also be discussions for both young drivers and their parents with Court Officials. Motorcycle Safety Programs (SS*) Johnston Community College offers Motorcycle Rider courses from March to mid-December for both beginners (BRC) and experienced riders (ERC), with courses cosponsored by the College and the North Carolina Motorcycle Safety Education Program. The Basic Rider Course (BRC) SS* is designed to instruct beginning riders on motorcycle safety, proper riding and street skills. Motorcycles and helmets are furnished. This course meets for 22 hours on Friday, Saturday and Sunday. Approximately 14 of these hours are conducted on our driving range. With successful completion, the participant will be exempt from the driving portion of the DMV requirements for a motorcycle endorsement. For those who have held a motorcycle license for at least six months, we offer an Experienced Rider Course (ERC) SS*. Each class participant must have a valid driver’s license with a motorcycle endorsement and must furnish his own motorcycle (licensed and street legal). The participant must also show proof of insurance on the motorcycle. This one-day course meets for 10 hours on the driving range. A prerequisite for the Advanced Rider Course is a valid motorcycle license or endorsement. Riders must provide their own street-legal and safe motorcycle. The riders motorcycles will be inspected for safety by the coaches and the motorcycles must meet the safety requirements outlined by the MSF to be permitted to participate. This is a one-day course (based on the military Sport Bike Rider Course) for experienced riders who desire to learn and practice more in-depth riding techniques. Class involves

small group discussions, interactive activities to address personal risk management strategies (to discuss options for cornering, braking, and swerving, and to improve visual perception to identify collision traps. On-cycle range exercises provide practice in cornering, braking, and swerving. Students must wear an approved helmet, over-the-ankle footwear, long pants, a long sleeved shirt or jacket, full-fingered gloves, and protective eyewear during the training. There is no skill test in this course.

PERSONAL PROTECTION Concealed Carry Handgun Training (SS*) (8 Hrs)
This course will explain the aspects of the North Carolina Concealed Carry Handgun law as it applies to the rights of the citizen to carry a concealed handgun and to apply the fundamentals of safety and basic marksmanship. Participants will be required to take a shooting proficiency test. This class will give you the certification you need to obtain a concealed carry permit from your sheriff’s office. Students will need to bring a handgun with belt and holster, hearing protection, shooting glasses and 100 rounds of ammunition. Students are required to wear closed toed shoes, and long pants are recommended. In addition, it is recommended to bring a hat/ cap, water, sun block and bug spray. Basic Skills In Basic Skills programs, students have opportunities to build skills in reading, language, and math or to complete high school through either adult high school or a GED Diploma program. There are five program areas in the Basic Skills Department including: Adult Basic Education (ABE), Adult High School (AHS), GED, Compensatory Education (CED), and English as a Second Language (ESL). Enrollment is open to individuals age 18 and older. Under special circumstances, students age 16 and 17 may enroll in certain programs as indicated in each program information section. Basic Skills Classes are FREE! Placement testing is required for entry (See more placement testing information below.) INFORMATION FOR UNDERAGE STUDENTS (Ages 16 and 17) Students ages 16 and 17 are not guaranteed admission into the Basic Skills Program. Students age 16 or 17 who are currently enrolled in high school are encouraged to contact their counselor or advocate prior to withdrawing. Johnston County Schools (JCS) offers a wide variety of alternative credit programs, and students ages 16 or 17 are strongly encouraged to learn of other options within JCS before withdrawing and applying to our Adult High School program. Students ages 16 and 17 must complete and return an application package. Packages may be picked up in the Elsee Building lobby on the main campus. After collecting the required documentation, students must return their application package to Dr. Angela Kearney’s office located in the Wilson Building, Academic Skills Center. Application packages will be reviewed, and students will be contacted regarding their admission application. INFORMATION FOR ADULTS AGES 18 AND OLDER Your First Step‌ Placement testing and orientation for the Adult High School Diploma (AHS) and GED Credentialing Placement testing is required for entry into all Basic Skills programs. Students should choose one testing session to attend. Sessions are offered in on the main campus in the Elsee Building, Room 135. You do not need to make an appointment prior to coming to a testing session. We operate in an open lab setting; therefore, first come, first serve basis. The placement test will take you about an hour and a half to complete. Children and guests are not allowed into the testing session with you. Students are required to bring a picture ID with your name, picture and date of birth. Please plan on staying 1.5 hours and finishing by closing times listed. There is no cost for placement testing. Daytime Assessments: Wednesday, Thursday, or Friday (8:30 am-1:00 pm) Walk-ins accepted within this time frame. Evening Assessments: Tuesday or Wednesday (5:30 pm-8:00 pm) Walk-ins accepted within this time frame. After completing the assessment, students are given the day/time for orientation. Orientations are offered both day and evening for your convenience. Students should again bring their picture ID. Please plan on staying at orientation for 2 hours. During orientation students will receive your assessment scores, learn about both the GED and Adult High School program as well as receive your class schedule. Adult Basic Education (ABE)
The goal of this program is to provide opportunities to improve reading, math, and language skills for entry into Adult High School, GED, College curriculum programs, or simply to improve skills for personal satisfaction. The program is FREE OF CHARGE and open to individuals age 18 and older. Students that are 16 or 17 years old may enroll under special circumstances. To enter this program, please see the above information on placement testing, as this will be your first step.
Adult High School (AHS)
In the Adult High School program, a student can earn a high school diploma by completing required and elective courses of high school subjects. To earn a high school diploma, a student must complete a total of 28 specific course units. Students are awarded credit for previous course work based on an evaluation of an official transcript from high school. This program is conducted in affiliation with the Johnston County Public Schools. This program is FREE OF CHARGE and open to students age 18 and older. Students ages 16 and 17 may enroll under special circumstances. The program is located on the College’s Smithfield campus. Classes are offered through an Internet-based software. Students without Internet access or those wishes for assistance may use the resources of the Academic Skills Center located on the main campus. GED Preparation Classes
The GED Preparation program allows individuals to earn the GED Diploma through completion of the five official GED Tests including: Language Arts – Reading, Language Arts – Writing, Mathematics, Science, and Social Studies. Following placement testing, a student would take the GED Practice Tests to determine readiness to take the actual tests for the GED Diploma. Students are eligible to take the GED once minimum scores have been met in each of the Practice Test areas. The GED program is open to adults age 18 and older. Please see the information on placement testing above – this will be your first step to enter the GED credentialing program.

English as a Second Language (ESL) Inglés como una idioma segunda
Los estudiantes en la programa de ESL aprenden como leer, escribir y hablar ingles. Hay tres niveles de ESL: Principiante, intermedio y avanzado. Si quiere matricular en nuestra programa, tiene que venire para un examén. Ofrecemos el examen cada lunes a las 6 :00 de la noche y cada miercoles a las 2 :00 de la tarde. Tiene que venir a la aula A139 en el edificio que se llama ‘Elsee.’ (245 College Road, Smithfield, NC 27577). No tiene que hacer una cita para tomar el examen, pero tiene que llegar en punto por favor. El examen va a durar una hora y media y no puede llevar ninos o amigos al examen. This course provides instruction in English for individuals who do not speak English as a first language. Learning English is important for self-improvement, better job opportunities, and preparation for citizenship. The program is FREE OF CHARGE and open to individuals age 18 and older. To enter ESL classes, the first step is a placement test. We offer this test weekly on Mondays at 6:00pm and Wednesdays at 2:00pm in the Elsee Building, Room A139 (245 College Road, Smithfield, NC 27577). You do not need to make an appointment to take the placement test, but please arrive on time as late arrivals will not be allowed to enter testing sessions already in progress. Also, please note that children and guests may not accompany you to the exam.

Compensatory Education (CED)
This community college program is designed to compensate adults with intellectual disabilities who have not had an education or who have received an inadequate one. The goal of the program is to help individuals become as independent and self-directed as possible through acquiring basic academic and life skills needed to function successfully in daily living at home and in the community. Compensatory Education classes are held at the main campus in Smithfield, Cleveland Center, and Johnston County Industries. The program is FREE OF CHARGE and available to adults age 18 and older. Continuing Education (CE): A student who officially withdraws (in writing) from a CE course prior to the first class meeting is eligible for a 100% refund upon request to the CE Division. A student may be eligible to receive a 75% refund of the registration fee if the student officially withdraws (in writing) from the course after the class begins but prior to the 10% census date. A student would not be entitled to receive a refund if he/she withdraws after the 10% census date of the course.
Courses offered as self-supporting, denoted by (SS) beside course title, (motorcycle, interior design, etc.) are not eligible for a refund as these programs are funded by registration fees collected. Students are eligible for a 100% refund if the class
is canceled by the College. A student may transfer ONLY ONCE (within the same semester) to another class if he/she notifies the office a minimum of one week in advance. Course Repetition Policy: Students who take an occupational course more than TWICE within a FIVE-YEAR period shall pay their cost of the course at a rate based on current contact hour value. Students shall be primarily responsible for monitoring course repetitions; however, the College shall review records and charge students full cost for courses taken more than twice. Senior Citizens who are legal residents of North Carolina and who wish to enroll in an occupational extension course will not be required to pay for taking the course twice. Senior citizens who take an occupational extension course more than TWICE within a FIVE-YEAR period shall pay their cost for the course. Students may repeat occupational extension courses an unlimited number of times if the repetitions are required for certification, licensure, or recertification. Senior Citizens (age 65 or older), who are qualified as legal residents of North Carolina, do not pay registration fee for one occupational class per academic semester. This does not include self-supporting courses.
