Reaffirmation continues In 2011-12, JCC continued preparing for its 2013 reaffirmation by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools. The year was spent completing the Quality Enhancement Plan (QEP), drafting a focused report, and preparing for the October on-site visit by SACS reviewers. The on-site visit resulted in only one recommendation related to faculty credentials for senior administrators to address. Over the next five years, the College will continue implementing its QEP, titled “On the Write Path.” The plan, which was

created with broad-based campus and community input, focuses on enhancing existing courses that emphasize writing instruction and developing new writing intensive courses. The plan also provides for supplemental resources, such as the new Writing Studio, to assist students in discovering and developing a writing voice. Both formative and summative assessments will be used to measure the implementation and outcomes of the QEP.

David N. Johnson, Ed.D As we enter into JCC’s 44th year of providing educational opportunities, I am glad to take a moment to thank you for being a part of our success this past year. We could not be publishing this positive report of accomplishments without supporters like you. By reflecting on 2011-12, I am reminded of many examples of academic success and leadership by our students, faculty, and staff. This year has been a time focused on relationship building to help us better serve our students in their educational journey. Our major accomplishment for 2012 was the preparation for and completion of our reaffirmation visit, a process that involved much hard work by the entire College. The reaffirmation project allowed for the creation of our outstanding Quality Enhancement
We are creating the right path to help our students achieve success. Plan, an effort that brought the entire institution together while working for the common goal of improved writing. We are creating the right path to help our students achieve success. From new degree programs that meet today’s job demands to developing certification courses local employers need, we are finding new opportunities to move our institution forward. I am extremely proud of all the good things happening at JCC. And as we continue to work together, I look forward to greater accomplishments in the future.

Lyn T. Austin As I embark on my fifth term as a JCC trustee, I am so proud to serve this fine institution of higher education. I am honored to represent an institution that creates success and opportunities for others. It has been a privilege to serve as chair of a very dedicated and hardworking group of fellow trustees. I am a firm believer in JCC’s mission, which is to provide accessible, high-quality educational and community enrichment opportunities for the successful development of learners. As I hear firsthand the challenges and struggles many of our students face, it is so humbling to see them achieve the ultimate success when they walk across the stage and receive their diplomas at graduation.

Grant Awards Throughout the year, JCC pursues public and private external grants to fulfill the mission of the College. College employees serve as project directors and work with partners in business/industry, community services, economic development, education, and workforce development to increase access and success for our students. JCC received nine awards totaling $443,105 in the 2011-2012 fiscal year.

Students, college employees and trustees, and legislators talk about community college needs during the Legislative Breakfast.
JCC hosts annual Legislative Breakfast Johnston Community College held its annual Legislative Breakfast Monday, May 7 in the Great Hall of the Paul A. Johnston Auditorium on the main campus in Smithfield. Federal, state, and county leaders, community college representatives, JCC students, and faculty and staff attended the event, including N.C. Rep. Leo Daughtry, N.C. Rep. James Langdon, and Jeff Carver, vice chairman of the Johnston County Board of Commissioners. Also in attendance were district representatives for U.S. Sen. Richard Burr and Congresswoman Renee Ellmers.
JCC President David Johnson thanked the legislative guests for their support and stressed the need for state leaders to restore some $80 million in recent management flexibility cuts to the state’s 58 community colleges.
The audience heard testimonials from student ambassadors Kameron Wood of Selma, Katherine Robbs of Clayton, and Rebecca Cook of Princeton who shared how JCC is helping them to achieve their educational and career goals. “JCC and the student ambassador program have been a wonderful experience this past year,” said Robbs, who will graduate with an associate in science degree in May 2013. “I’ve gotten the chance to meet many new people and although I am sad to say this coming year will be my last at JCC, I can honestly say that this is only the beginning of my educational journey.” 6 | JCC PRESIDENT’S REPORT 2011 - 2012

Supporting higher education strengthens communities PGI receives JCC business partner award Polymer Group, Inc. (PGI) is the recipient of the JCC 2011 Business and Industry Partner Award. The award was presented February 9 at the Breakfast before Business event, which was hosted by the JCC Foundation, the JCC Economic and Community Development staff, and the Johnston County Association of Chambers of Commerce. Held in the Great Hall of the Paul A. Johnston Auditorium, the event was sponsored by Pierce Group Benefits, BB&T, First Citizens Bank, Four Oaks Bank, and KS Bank. Over the past two years, JCC has assisted PGI with two customized training projects to better train its employees in safety, maintenance, computers, leadership, and other skills. PGI supports the College Foundation and has a scholarship endowment that has awarded 10 scholarships to JCC students since 2004. PGI encourages its employees to earn college degrees by offering a tuition reimbursement program. “PGI greatly respects our partnership with Johnston Community College,” said Rich Towler, human resources manager at PGI’s Benson facility. “Supporting higher education strengthens the communities in which we operate and having an active partnership allows for the community college system to assist private industry, like PGI, with current training needs and initiatives.”

Howell Woods Environmental Learning Center Some 700 patrons of all ages visited the College’s unique 2,800-acre Howell Woods Environmental Learning Center for the annual Howell Woodstock celebration in November. About 50 exhibitors, vendors, and volunteers displayed their wares and entertained the crowd.
Arboretum In 2012, Arboretum volunteers logged more than 1,300 hours tending the gardens and donated more than 1,000 pounds of food to the Food Closet at Centenary United Methodist Church and the Soup Kitchen at First Baptist Church.

Congratulations to the Class of 2012 JCC awarded a record 547 associate degrees and diplomas at its commencement ceremonies on May 16 and 17. Renee Batts, education consultant-health sciences academic programs from the North Carolina Community College System, delivered the commencement address to Monday’s health sciences graduates. Dr. Barry Drum, chaplain and religious studies instructor at North Carolina Wesleyan College, gave the general commencement speech at Tuesday’s ceremony. James

Hodge of Newton Grove, who earned an associate degree in paralegal technology, received the President’s Award for his scholastic achievement and leadership. Marjorie West of Dunn, who earned associate degrees in medical office administration and office administration, received the Citizenship Award for her leadership and service to fellow students. In 2011-12, 145 students earned their GED and eight students received their Adult High School diplomas from JCC.
2011-2012 Student Ambassadors JCC selects 15 up-and-coming student leaders each year to serve as its prestigious student ambassadors. The students receive paid tuition for the year through private monies given to the College Foundation. In return, the student ambassadors are involved in a number of Foundation special events and student activities on campus to foster their leadership skills. Nate Jones is JCC’s Academic Excellence Award winner for 2012.
Nate Jones is Johnston Community College’s excellent student It’s hard to ignore Nate Jones’s passion for Johnston Community College. “It’s been fantastic. If you don’t know exactly what you want to do in the future, the community college is a great place to find yourself,” says Jones, 21. “I definitely found myself at JCC.” With an obvious zeal for learning and a determination for success, Jones is JCC’s Academic Excellence Award recipient for 2012. In 2009, Jones, a Clayton resident, enrolled at JCC thinking he wanted to study music. Thanks to his educational experience here and the guidance of a few mentors along the way Jones decided to move to New York after graduation in May to study communications.
I definitely found myself at JCC “My passion is communications and the collaborative effort that goes on behind the scenes,” he says. “I think it’s the best medium for all facets of art to bring their skills and talents together to create something larger than themselves.” In 2010-11, Jones served as the president of the college’s Phi Theta Kappa honor society, a position he says strengthened his leadership skills. “It’s been a great opportunity to promote the community college option,” Jones says. “You get to work with the best and brightest at JCC, and it’s been a wonderful avenue to mingle with other students.” ACHIEVING SUCCESS | 11

Outstanding Instructor: David Oliver It’s obvious that David Oliver was born to teach. Whether it’s in the classroom at Johnston Community College, in combat in the Army Reserve, or in Sunday School at Coats Community Church, Oliver loves to help others learn new information.
Outstanding Staffer: Jackie Page Jackie Page is so thankful she was hired at Johnston Community College nine years ago. “Something just told me JCC is the right place to be,” she said recently. “There is so much camaraderie and fellowship here at the college. It’s such a great place to work.”
“I started my teaching career in 1993, and I’ve literally taught every age from three years old and up,” Oliver says.
A resident of Benson, Page is the recipient of the 2012 Rudolph A. Howell Outstanding Staff Person Award.
Oliver’s dedication to education is one reason he is the 2012 Earl C. and Doris F. Helms Excellence in Teaching Endowment recipient at JCC.
A graduate of JCC, Page is a records registration specialist in the Student Services division. She spends most of her time entering student registration data, assisting students with transcript requests, and answering general registration questions.
“I love seeing the light bulb when a student comprehends a concept after you’ve tried different ways to get the concept across to them,” the Erwin native says. “To me, that’s the greatest reward.” Since 1999, Oliver has taught networking technology at JCC. He’s also a member of the Army Reserve and teaches antiterrorism, safety, and other courses to soldiers. “The best part of my job has always been the students,” Oliver says. “They make it fun, and I’ve enjoyed dealing with the myriad of experiences they bring to the table. I learn new methods from them just as much as they learn from me.” 12 | PRESIDENT’S REPORT 2011 - 2012
Christina Wilson, an admissions coordinator, said Page is conscientious and is always eager to help. “Jackie is friendly, hardworking, and always has a smile on her face,” Wilson said. Page said she was surprised but humbled by her honor. “I’m so grateful for the recognition,” she said. “I’m very appreciative for the opportunity to work at JCC. I’ve developed so many special relationships, and it’s been a really wonderful experience that I hope will continue.”

A Message from the Foundation President
Earl W. Worley, Jr. The JCC Foundation celebrated its 30th anniversary in 2012, and on behalf of the Foundation Board of Directors, Dr. David Johnson, and the College trustees, I want to express my sincere thanks for the support you have shown these past 30 years. This year is bittersweet as my presidency ended June 30, 2012, but I am fortunate to have led such an outstanding organization. During my tenure as Foundation Board president, I have been able to serve alongside a committed Board of Directors, two devoted college presidents, and a dedicated Foundation staff. I am thankful for the greater understanding I have of this fine institution and the many ways in which JCC touches our students and communities through exceptional instruction and outstanding cultural and personal enrichment opportunities. Many of these opportunities would not be possible without support from our private donors. In 2011-12, the Foundation’s assets grew nearly 12 percent from $5,133,715 to $5,725,395 as of June 30, 2012. More than $70,000 was raised as part of the 30 for 30 challenge where the Foundation engaged 30 new partners to contribute at least $1,000. First Citizens Bank provided $30,000 in matching funds to these new partner gifts. In addition, 13 new funds were established to support scholarships, including six scholarship endowments, three annual scholarships, and four memorial funds. To date, 11 spaces have been named in the Learning Resource Center to support the President’s Innovation Fund, a fund focused on student success and building a 21st century campus.

Supporting the college through fundraising events Foundation Highlights September 2011 (right, top photo) The JCC Foundation honored its donors and scholarship recipients Sept. 11 at a Donor Appreciation and Scholarship Recipient luncheon. Approximately 250 scholarship recipients and donors attended the celebration in the Great Hall of the Paul A. Johnston Auditorium. For the 2011-12 academic year, the JCC Foundation awarded nearly 160 scholarships totaling $95,000.
October 2011 (above) Thirty teams participated in the 17th annual Neal Lancaster-Four Oaks Bank Charity Classic Oct. 7 at the Country Club of Johnston County. The event raised nearly $60,000 for critical areas of funding such as scholarships, program enhancement, and academic enrichment at JCC.
January 2012 The JCC Foundation kicked off a year-long celebration of the organization’s 30th Anniversary. As part of the anniversary celebration, JCCF established a goal of raising an additional $30,000 in business and corporate support. As of June 30, 2012 over $70,000 had been raised with a significant major gift contributed by First Citizens Bank.
April 2012 (right, bottom photo) The JCC Foundation held its 2012 spring gala April 19 at The Clubhouse at Portofino in Clayton. The event was hosted by Sandra and Norwood Thompson.
