pathways to success JOHNSTON COMMUNITY COLLEGE 2010-2011 PRESIDENT’S REPORT attaining success in the classroom, in the community, and in the workplace

JCC adopted a new mission, institutional goals, and strategic areas of emphasis in 2011. M I S S I O N S T A T E M E N T: Johnston Community College provides accessible, high-quality educational and community enrichment opportunities for the successful development of learners. OUR INSTITUTIONAL GOALS: • Support student achievement of academic goals, enhanced employment opportunities, or transfer to four-year colleges. • Collaborate with appropriate agencies and groups to meet workforce and community needs. • Ensure high quality and continuous improvement in all programs and services. • Provide specialized training to ensure future institutional leadership. • Promote and recognize the diversity and achievements of faculty, staff, and the student body. • Provide and support personal and cultural enrichment, outreach, and community based programs, activities, and events that reflect the diversity within the community. • Create, maintain, and enhance a safe environment conducive to learning. • Ensure the efficient, appropriate, and effective use of all available resources. • Secure alternative sources of funding. • Engage in strategic planning, ongoing quality improvement, and responsiveness to community needs.

O U R S T R AT E G I C A R E A S O F E M P H A S I S : • Engagement of students, employees, and the community in a college environment that nurtures personal growth, diversity, and academic success. • Enhancement of safety, security, and compliance at all college locations. REAFFIRMATION BEGINS In 2011, JCC began preparing for its 2013 reaffirmation by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools. The year was spent researching and writing two key documents, the Compliance Certification, or self evaluation, and the Quality Enhancement Plan (QEP). A QEP is a carefully designed course of action that addresses a well-defined and focused topic or issue related to enhancing student learning. JCC selected written communication as the focus of its plan. The title is “On the Write Path.” In addition to the creation of the two documents, the reaffirmation process also includes dialogue and review of the self study by peers in higher education. An on-site visit by SACS reviewers is planned for October 2012.

suc c ess F ROM TH E PR ESI D ENT As I reflect on the many accomplishments of the past year at Johnston Community College, success is the first word that comes to mind. Throughout 2010-11, JCC witnessed great success in the classroom, in the workplace, and in our community. In this President’s Report, you will see many examples of how our institution created success through numerous opportunities for individuals in the Johnston County community. Our exceptional instructional programs and dedicated faculty and staff provided clear, seamless pathways to help our students achieve excellence. In 2011, the JCC campus grew with the construction of our magnificent Learning Resource Center. This year also marked the beginning of the process to continue our accreditation.

I am proud of the dedication and hard work of our students, faculty, and staff as we continue to serve more than 17,000 students each year. Also, I am extremely grateful for the leadership and vision of our Board of Trustees and for the support of our many friends and our College Foundation Board of Directors. Their generous gifts enable us to provide the best possible educational opportunities for our students. Last year was a successful year for JCC. I know, with all of us working together, JCC is poised to achieve even greater success in the coming years. JCC is truly a special community college with a bright future ahead.

student ambassadors RUSTY MITCHINER RECEIVES ACADEMIC EXCELLENCE HONOR

ABOUT THE STUDENT AMBASSADOR PROGRAM

Rusty Mitchiner just can’t get enough of college.

Each year, JCC selects 15 up-and-coming student leaders to serve as its prestigious student ambassadors. The students receive paid tuition for the year through the College Foundation. In return, they are involved in a number of special events and activities on campus. The program also teaches the students the importance of community service. In 2010-11, the Student Ambassadors volunteered at the Smithfield Rescue Mission and sponsored a fundraiser to raise awareness about the organization.

Last spring, Mitchiner juggled a 30hour academic schedule at Johnston Community College filled with Spanish interpreting and heating and air conditioning technology in addition to his prerequisites for nursing. On top of the academics, he’s also a student ambassador, a member of the Rotaract service club, and the Phi Theta Kappa honor society. In April, he was named the College’s Academic Excellence Award recipient. “I just like to learn, and I’ve always felt that knowledge is power,” said Mitchiner, a Garner resident. “People can take your money and your freedom, but they can never take the knowledge that’s in your head.” Mitchiner said he is extremely grateful for his student ambassador scholarship and the relationships he has built with college supporters through the College Foundation. “You get to interact with donors who place an important value on education,

Mitchiner credits his service as a young adult in the U.S. Navy for instilling in him a strong discipline for success. He attributes his opportunity to study a diverse academic schedule to the openness of community colleges. “I think the community college system as a whole is a great thing,” said Mitchiner, who graduated in May with two associate degrees. “I have been so impressed with Johnston Community College.”

When it comes to her job of keeping buildings looking their best at Johnston Community College, immaculate is her standard practice.

Baker is the recipient of the 2011 Rudolph A. Howell Outstanding Staff Person Award. In her 23 years of service to the College, Baker says she’s loved every day on the job.

“I can’t say enough about how good Barbara is at her job and as a JCC employee,” said colleague Cindy Phillips. “Her quality of cleaning is outstanding, and she never complains. Barbara is so deserving of this outstanding staff award for all she has done

“I could have gone anywhere to work, but I chose to stay here at JCC because of the family atmosphere,” says Baker, 55. “We are all family here, and it’s a joy to work with such wonderful people.”

The College is also special to Baker because it’s where she earned her education. In 1976, she received her high school diploma from JCC when the College was located in Four Oaks. She has also earned her associate degree in general occupational technology and phlebotomy certificate from JCC. In her spare time, Baker likes to camp and spend time with her grandchildren, ages 8 and 5.

JCC continued to make great strides in athletics in 2010-11.

The men’s golf team claimed its second Region X title in two years and competed in the NJCAA Division II championships in May.

The college now fields teams in four sports — men’s basketball, women’s volleyball, men’s golf, and women’s golf. The teams compete in Division II Region X of the National Junior College Athletic Association, which allows students to compete against other junior college teams in North Carolina, South Carolina, Virginia, and West Virginia.

The College hired Henry Dickerson as its new basketball coach and the Jaguars were competing very well at the end of 2011, posting an early season 8-2 record.

grow t h JCC DEDICATES NEW LEARNING RESOURCE CENTER Johnston Community College celebrated its new Learning Resource Center with an official dedication and donor recognition ceremony on Nov. 3. Some 200 individuals representing the College and the community attended the event in the new 33,000-square-foot, two story building on the main campus. The College’s first environmentally constructed facility, the LRC includes a modern library and state-of-the-art distance education learning labs. The event celebrated the fruition of years of planning and support by College administration, community leaders, and private donors for a 21st century learning space for students. The facility was paid for with county bond monies approved by citizens in 2007 and opened for students and public use in August. The ceremony also included special recognition of the donors who named 11 spaces in the building through a naming project by the College Foundation. The naming opportunities are being used to create endowments that will support a new fund used to develop and expand instructional opportunities and meet emergent institutional needs at JCC.

COLLEGE CELEBRATES FRUIT Johnston Community College celebrated fruit on Tuesday, Nov. 8 during a Planting Day ceremony for its new orchard. JCC was chosen to receive a fruit orchard from The Fruit Tree Planting Foundation and Edy’s Fruit Bars after finishing in the top 20 of an online voting competition as part of the Communities Take Root project. The orchard includes 30 varieties of apple trees as well as 13 educational specimens of trees bearing fruits like persimmon, paw paw, and jujube. Arboretum staff and volunteers will nurture and care for the trees, which will enhance the College’s support of growing and donating fresh food for Plant a Row for the Hungry. “We are truly humbled by the support we have received for this project — from volunteers to students, faculty, staff and administration — not just at JCC — but friends around the world,” said Lin Frye, Arboretum director. Planting Day was a special day for the College and the community but especially for the hard working volunteers who care so much about the food produced at the Arboretum. “This place has just become a major part of my life,” said Arlene Bachman as she shoveled mulch around one of the fruit trees. “We’re learning, we’re sharing, and we’re giving. It’s just such a good feeling when you are here.” Above: Lin Frye, Arboretum director, and Rico Montenegro, a chief certified arborist with the Fruit Tree Planting Foundation.

MESSAGE FR OM THE FOUNDATI O N P R E SI DE N T On behalf of the JCC Foundation Board of Directors, Dr. David Johnson, and the College trustees, I extend sincere gratitude for your generous support. In the 2010-2011 fiscal year, the College Foundation’s assets grew from $4,472,566 in 2010 to $5,133,715 as of June 30, 2011 — an increase of 13%. For the same time period, more than $540,000 was contributed by individuals, corporations, and foundations. All of these gifts directly support the College, its mission, and the important work of our faculty and staff who provide outstanding educational and workforce development opportunities to individuals in our county and region. Notable highlights of the 2010-2011 fiscal year were the College Foundation’s annual fall Donor Appreciation and Scholarship Recipient event, the nearly $60,000 raised during the 16th annual Neal Lancaster – Four Oaks Bank Charity Classic, a successful Dollars for Scholars event, and the official dedication and donor recognition of the Frank Creech Art Gallery. The College Foundation also transformed its mini-grants program to the Innovation Grants Program, a competitive grants award program for faculty and staff. And speaking of innovation, the College Foundation developed a new

President’s Innovation Fund, a fund established to assist the trustees and College president in meeting emergent and pressing needs of our institution and student body. To date, 11 corporations and individuals have named spaces in the newly constructed Learning Resource Center to initiate support for this fund. Please know that none of this would be possible without the dedication and faithful support of our alumni and friends. Your support serves a critical role in enhancing our college and community and the lives of thousands of individuals.

Earl W. Worley, Jr. President, Board of Directors Johnston Community College Foundation, Inc.
