CALIFORNIA DREAMS
BELGIAN PREMIERE
SCREENING: thu 23/3 at 22h & tue 28/3 at 16h (ZED-Vesalius)
California Dreams follows five people that, almost hopelessly strive for success in Hollywood. There’s Cory: the actor that collects money to be able to afford his flight to Berlin so he can audition. Neal is obsessed with Taco Bell (California-Mexican food), but dreams of a career as a scenewriter. Even the shy Patrick is trying to pave his own way to Hollywood. Carolan has been living in her car for a few years now, but when it comes to her Oscar speech: it is signed, sealed and can readily be delivered. Kevin, aka K-nine, is convinced that he can make it in Hollywood as an imitator. Soon he realizes his chances are slim to none. California Dreams explores the fine line between fiction and reality. Director Mike Ott beautifully interchanges scripted scenes with real-life scenes of the aspiring actors he follows. Together they provide a combination of a documentary and a comedy. Director of photography Mike Gioulakis does an outstanding job behind the camera. He films fascinating images of landscapes and knows how to play with colors.

FAN GIRL SCREENING: mon 27/3 at 20h (Kinepolis), tue 28/3 at 21h30 (ZED-Vesalius)
Every teenage girl has her idol. In times of social media like Instagram, Facebook and Snapchat these idols are more accessible than ever, which makes for true obsessions. How can these girls be in love with guys they probably never meet in person? Fan Girl is a short documentary about girls who are in love with the famous boys they follow on social media. Teenage girls obsessed with celebrities is a phenomenon that exists for years. By changing technology (social media, smartphones ‌), the relation between the girls and their idols also changes. Liza Mandelup shows perfectly the illusions of these girls, without labeling them as crazy. The desire for connection even shows the humaneness behind the obsession. Fan Girl demonstrates how people become more and more dependent on social media and technology in their search for friends and relations.

GOD KNOWS WHERE I AM
BELGIAN PREMIERE
SCREENING: thu 23/3 at 20h & sun 26/3 at 21h30 (ZED-Vesalius)
God Knows Where I Am is a reconstruction of an extremely bizar story, worth the jury prize at the renowned documentary festival Hotdocs. With an intense tenderness, God Knows Where I Am slowly but surely reveals the ravage of a confusing mental illness when all help fails. With the diary, we get to know a woman who lost her mental health and, in turn, her life. Directors Jedd and Todd Wider bring, with much tenderness, the story of Linda Bishop, a woman with a serious bipolar disorder that has lived as a prisoner of her own mind, surviving on apples and rainwater. With help of the diary, images of the location and a story of those who stay behind – her sister, a friend, her daughter and the owner of the abandoned house – we get to know a woman who lost her mental health and, in turn, her life. An livid example of a failing health-care system. Strong, poignant, but also tragically comical: an unforgettable movie.

GRINGO: THE DANGEROUS LIFE OF JOHN MCAFEE
BELGIAN PREMIERE
SCREENING: thu 23/3 at 20h30 (Kinepolis), sun 26/3 at 22h15 (ZED-Vesalius)
John McAfee became world-famous and stinking rich when he became the most famous anti-virus software creator ever. But he also became crazy. He suddenly identified himself as a yogi, and left all of his belongings to follow a group headed for Belize. In Belize he founded a commune with a very high Heart of Darkness vibe. In 2012 he became the main suspect of a murder case and fled. That, however, did not stop him from attempting to run for presidency in 2016. Filmmaker Nanette Burstein (The Kid Stays in the Picture) was, like many others, fascinated by this bizar play of McAfee’s life. What can money and fame do to one’s mental health? Conversations with witnesses and those involved offer horrifying stories about the now 70-year-old mogul. McAfee refuses to confirm Burstein’s ideas and stories, but does send her an occasional mail, each one increasingly bizar. The story of John McAfee defies all imagination and proves that facts amply overpower fiction.

IN LOCO PARENTIS
BELGIAN PREMIERE
SCREENING: sun 26/3 at 20h (Kinepolis), wed 29/3 at 13h & thu 30/3 at 14h (ZED-Vesalius)
In Loco Parentis shows the life of John and Amanda Leyden, two friendly teachers teaching at Headfort, the only boarding school in Ireland for kids aged 7 to 12. Headfort, where the couple has taught for 46 years, resembles the Harry Potter-esque scenery of Hogwarts. John teaches math, Latin and English, but also guitar. Amanda tries to teach the kids about the beauty of literature. After all these years, retirement is in sight. Can they leave behind the school that has become their life, and go their own way? After being selected for awards at, among others, Sundance Film Festival and IDFA, DOCVILLE is proud to present In Loco Parentis. The directors Neasa Ní Chianáin and David Rane enjoyed unlimited access to classrooms, but also detention, recreational rooms and the band-practice room. Throughout the school – thus also throughout the life of John and Amanada – there is a positive, magical atmosphere that is somehow explicitly depicted by the two directors.

SCREENING: fri 24/3 at 20h, tue 28/3 at 17h30 & thu 30/3 at 16h (ZED-Vesalius)
In her long-awaited second full-length work, Alma Har’el chooses a story about people searching for the true meaning of love. She allows us to follow the relationship troubles of a disabled Joel and stripper Blake. Wil has a hard time raising his son, now that he found out he is not the biological father. Finally there is Victory, struggling with the painful divorce her parents are going through. Alma Har’el knows how to elegantly frame the complexity of love by using these stories as an example. Alma Har’el won the Bombay Beach prize in 2011 for best documentary at the Tribeca Film Festival. She uses a strong sample of cinematographic work that show the past but also the possible future of storylines in love. Fiction and reality flow over onto the screen. For this original project Har’el was supported by two well-known partners: actor Shia LaBeouf as a producer and musical artist Flying Lotus as the composer. The custom-fit composed music is the cherry on top of this already very poetic movie.

In the textile factories of the Indian metropolis Gujarat, machines rumble unhindered while workers slave away in degrading conditions to earn the minimum to survive. For director Rahul Jain – himself a scion of a rich family of Indian textile industrialists – it was necessary to capture the reality of hard labour in long, bewitching shots. That makes it more difficult to look away – something we are often guilty of.

Stefan Sagmeister is not unhappy. He is a well-known and very successful graphic designer, who has the privilege of working with some of the biggest artists in the world. Still, he thinks he can be even happier. But can he control that? He examines whether it is possible to improve your own happiness by three popular psychological experiments: therapy, meditation or medication. Of course everything does not always go as planned. But whatever happens, Stefan Sagmeister is not afraid to speak very openly about important things in his life. Co-director and subject of experiments in The Happy Film, Stefan Sagmeister is a famous graphic designer who designed album covers for famous artists like The Rolling Stones, Jay-Z and Talking Heads. That work earned him two Grammy Awards. In this film his talent is seen on (and not off) the screen, making for a visually strong and beautiful documentary. The experiments and sometimes painful honesty that Stefan Sagmeister exudes account for very funny situations while still functioning as an inspiration.

TOKYO IDOLS
BELGIAN PREMIERE
SCREENING: mon 27/3 at 20h (Kinepolis), tue 28/3 at 21h30 (ZED-Vesalius)
More than 10,000 teenage girls in Japan call themselves idols. For decades, the worship of cute girls was regarded as one of the strangest subcultures in Japan; a fairly specific definition of female sexuality. The rise of the Internet made the subculture of idols a mainstream phenomenon. It is ubiquitous in Japanese society and is backed by an enormous money industry. Tokyo Idols follows some idols and their super fans who sometimes literally give their lives to be able to follow their idol. Director Kyoko Miyake left Japan after her childhood. It was only later, during her visit in her home country, that she became acquainted with the phenomenon of idols. Miyake looks to discover what is at the root of this phenomenon and why she and many other girls feel uncomfortable in Japan. Tokyo Idols is a fascinating documentary that goes beyond just presenting this exotic phenomenon. It questions the ever-growing disconnection between man and woman, and between virtuality and reality in these hypermodern times.

TOWER
BELGIAN PREMIERE
SCREENING: sat 25/3 at 15h & mon 27/3 at 22h15 (ZED-Vesalius), wed 29/3 at 20h30 (Kinepolis)
August 1, 1966. On the quiet campus of Texas University suddenly gunshots are heard. A confused man takes refuge behind the clock tower on top of the main building. He opens fire and shoots at random passersby. What follows is 1,5 hours of immense anxiety, meticulously reconstructed by former victims and witnesses: the boy who just cycled past, a journalist, police rushing to get to the scene, a pregnant woman ... ordinary people whose lives changed radically while they learned they are capable of more than they imagined. The story is incisively portrayed with a rotoscoping filming technique, an animation procedure in which live action is interspersed with lots of media clips and archived material. This impressive film won the Audience Award at the SXSW film festival. In Europe we look compassionately at every mass shooting incident at a school in the US. The praised documentary proves that a drama such as that is more than a senseless tragedy, or a cause for a discussion on guncontrol. It is a story of people: of tension and terror, but also of courage and selflessness. Fifty years after the first mass shooting at a school ever, Tower not only brings back a senseless tragedy, but a profound thriller about adrenaline, fear, courage and compassion.

ARNO: DANCING INSIDE MY HEAD SCREENING: sat 25/3 at 22h15 (ZED-Vesalius)
The rocker – now retired – is after decades on stage still one of the most original artists of Belgium. He is not known as the most convenient person, which makes it all the more surprising that director Pascal Poissonier got permission to follow the musician for two years. The camera goes into the recording studio and on tour throughout Europe, the US and Japan. Pascal Poissonnier is not only a filmmaker but he teaches film at the School of Arts (Ghent) and the Lemmens Institute (Leuven). He was previously on DOCVILLE with Walking Back to Happiness in 2010, and now returns with a fascinating and pure portrait of a Belgian legend. On stage we see Arno as a young and wild colt, but off-stage we may see him as an old man, with 35 albums to his name and just as many broken relationships. Poissonier brings a sincere portrait of the man and the artist, indistinguishable in the case of Arno.

(ZED-STUK)
Through the eyes of children about to be adults, Simon Gillard brings the nomadic life of a colourful West-African Fulani peoples to life. Boli Bana is a sensory film that takes you all the way to West-Africa, where you can almost taste the fabric of the savanna on your lips while the sun burns your skin. At night the young Ama and other boys from the tribe are wandering around the savanna with their herd of cows. The boys are responsible for the imposing, but mild animals. Together they travel around, act like real boys – with typical boy jokes – but try to behave like real men. The colourful village is the place where the women live. A village surrounded by the sounds of their laughter and hymns. Today is a big day for Aissita. A sorceress came to the village for her rite of passage, because today is the day Aissita becomes a woman. After two short documentaries – which were very successful in the festival circuit (Anima in 2013 and Yaar in 2014) – the director Simon Gillard shows up with his debut feature film. His shots are so sensitive and delicate, making the pain and endurance that comes with live and the rites of passage, almost physically tangible.

BURNING OUT SCREENING: sun 26/3 at 19h30 (30CC/Wagehuys)
In the hospital, everything has to be cheaper, faster and more efficient. The management places enormous amounts of pressure on the staff. The human connection between doctors and their patients disappears in the background, which causes many doctors to lose any joy in their work. Some get frustrated and short-tempered while others act indifferent to their patients. What follows is a logical consequence. In 2012, Jérôme Le Maire was present at DOCVILLE with the beautiful Le thé ou l’électricité, a film which earned him a nomination for the European Film Award. While back then, Le Maire focused on a Moroccan community in which time stood still and modernity only entered reluctantly, his focus has now been placed on a world that cannot be reversed any longer. Burning Out paints a shocking image of the perfect breeding ground for a growing problem: a burn out.

EL COLOR DEL CAMALEON SCREENING: fri 24/3 at 20h (Kinepolis)
During the Pinochet regime, the 21-year-old Jorge falls into the hands of the Chilean secret services, forcing him to work for them in a particularly violent way. Through all sorts of manipulation and espionage techniques, they try to turn Jorge into a secret agent. But Jorge escapes and flees to East Berlin. Eventually he enters Belgium, where he is a respected war cameraman and able to start his family. His son Andrés is now looking for answers regarding his incomplete Chilean past and what made his father who he is. El Color del Camaleon is an intimate story. Father and son return to the places of which Jorge thought he would never visit them. They find an old STASI file and try to reconstruct the dark past. More than that, the film is an openhearted story about the lack of dialogue between a father and a son and an intriguing universal story about the dark side of the human condition, in which life and all choices in it are more complex than they may seem at first.

EXPRMNTL SCREENING: sat 25/3 at 21h30 (ZED-STUK)
The documentary EXPRMNTL highlights an important period in the cultural scene of radical cinema, underground music and unrestrained experimental drift. EXPRMNTL was initially the side program of the World Festival of Art and Film that took place between 1949 and 1974 in the casino of Knokke. The special side program showed the medium in all its forms and colours: surrealist film, Dadaist film, abstract film ... EXPRMNTL had only five editions, but was the most legendary experimental film festival ever. The significance of experimental film is clarified by looking at the history of EXPRMTL, a history that questions the nature of film. The lover of underground film will be nothing but pleased by this documentary: a flash of the cult figure Pierre Clementi, an image of Yoko Ono, rare images of ‘fringe events’ at the festival – including a bouncy castle full of nudists – and much more unknown subversive pearls of the festival’s catalogue. Filmmaker Debackere uses this documentary to pinpoint a topic that is all too relevant today: the limited display possibilities for experimental film.

GRANDS TRAVAUX SCREENING: thu 23/3 at 21h30 (ZED-STUK)
The Institute Anneessens Funck is a Dutch vocational school in the center of Brussels where young people can learn a certain subject. The school not only prepares students for a future job not just through hands-on experience, but also by staging certain work situations and job interviews. In addition to school, their life is filled with football, love affairs and the search for a job and a home. Olivia Rochette and Gerard-Jan Claes graduated from the KASK School of Arts in Ghent in 2010 and attracted attention with their graduate work Because We Are Visual (2010) and Rain documentary (2012) which they made on behalf of the dance company Rosas. Grands Travaux is a film about a group of young people in Brussels where a certain stigma remains in place (Anneessens Funck has a bad reputation, despite all the hard work put into it). The filmmakers do not partake in the debate, but rather show these images, so that the young and their environment may speak for themselves.

JAN FABRE AT THE STATE HERMITAGE MUSEUM
WORLD PREMIERE
SCREENING: sun 26/3 at 20h (ZED-Vesalius)
Jan Fabre at the Hermitage Museum follows the artist as he organizes his big exhibition in the renowned State Hermitage Museum in St. Petersburg. It is a very big deal, because there is a lot involved in putting on such a large-scale exhibition. In addition, there is the sometimes difficult relationship between a quirky Fabre and an old museum. It is fascinating to see the famous artist at work. A side note for the fans: the exhibition in Russia runs until the end of April 2017. Director Wannes Peremans had followed Fabre already in 2009, when he joined Fabre during the preparation of a major exhibition at the Louvre. Now together they travel to Russia, where the exhibition has caused for some friction with those who reject the use of stuffed animals (taxidermy). The film is not only a unique opportunity to look behind the scenes of one of the oldest, richest and largest museums in the world. It is also a personal and intimate portrait of one of the most renowned Belgian artists.

Director Kenneth Michiels followed Moussa and the young ones for a year. Some of the young people are labelled as ‘unmanageable’: they have a precarious situation at home and most of them can do little more than play football. Sometimes there is talent, but no discipline or motivation. 0-8 losses (or more) are no exception. Can football bring about a change? In 2011 Kenneth Michiels won the VAF Wildcard during his graduation at KASK with his work Twenty-One + Seven, a portrait of his sister Britt and her daughter. The twins Eden and Leandro are born prematurely, after less than 6 months of pregnancy. From their first hours of life, they are forced to fight alongside their mother Laurence in a modern neonatal ward. Surrounded by tubes and machines, but also by a concerned medical group, the young ones try to overcome major problems – which they have, among other things, with their breathing and internal bleeding. Like an intimate guardian of Eden and Leandro’s life, Life to Come tells a story with tremendous empathy and from a surprising point of view of premature twins in all their fragility. SACRED WATER SCREENING: tue 28/3 at 19h30 (ZED-STUK)
In Western civilization the female orgasm is often shrouded in mystery. In Rwanda, however, it is literally legendary. According to an old legend, Lake Kivu – one of the Great Lakes in Africa – was formed by the orgasmic flood of a queen. Intrigued by this legend radio presenter Vestine is bound to investigate the secrets of female sexuality and wishes to bring a respectful tribute to female pleasure with a broad smile and without the slightest diffidence or trepidation. The title’s sacred water refers to Kunyaza – the female ejaculation. The extravagant radio personality Vestine wants to know all about it and aspires to honor the Rwandan sexual tradition and keep it intact. Furthermore, Vestine tries to bring attention to the Gukuna ritual, involving young women to prepare for sex by means of herbs and massage. Candid and cheerful conversations about the Kunyaza technique, about whether all women possess the ability, but also about the apparent fact Western folks know less than little about the phenomenon ... therefore they do not know what they are missing out on.

Shadow World is not only eye candy for the movie lover, but also an eye-opener and a wake-up call. In the aftermath of a war rumors of bribery, conflicts of interest and unethical profiteering are surfacing time and again. A shady world of arms dealers, corruption, greed, bribery and dark back rooms. But also corrupt politicians, secret services, military commanders and world leaders whose moral compass is off course suddenly emerge. Their only objective seems to be prolonging the war and gaining profit, regardless of the human and moral costs and sacrifices Based on testimonies of investigative journalists, arms dealers, lobbyists, politicians and insiders, Shadow World shows how the international arms trade is a threat to democracy. STILLE WILDERNIS
BELGIAN PREMIERE
SCREENING: wed 29/3 at 20h30 (ZED-Vesalius)
When a child has gone missing for years, what goes running through its parents’ heads? Director Mathijs Vleugels depicts the uncertainty and heartache of the people involved in the child’s absence and does so in a creative and poetic manner. He entices the viewer when following a police force trying to shed light on a lost young boy, named Tim, who disappeared in 2003. In 2003, the life of Aimé and Yvonne gets turned upside down for good. Their adoptive son Tim disappears in the Hungarian wilderness. For years they are struggling with endless questions. What happened? Where is he? The nagging nescience and obscurity creates an ever-growing emptiness fed by uncertainty. During the police’s final attempt to solve the case, it seems the intolerant silence in the parents’ life is gradually coming to an end. Can this last effort of the police still elucidate the boy’s disappearing? Director Mathijs Vleugels successfully portrays an intimate profile of the missing boy by using footage of Tim’s childhood, thus creating a personal and nostalgic feeling alleviating the heavy subject. The story is enhanced by the black-and-white animations representing Tim’s emotional world. Vleugels – also known for his Canvas docu-series – visually and powerfully translates the heavy burden Aimé and Yvonne have been carrying in their daily lives for years.

AMATEURS IN SPACE
BELGIAN PREMIERE
SCREENING: thu 23/3 at 19h30 (ZED-STUK), thu 30/3 at 15h30 (ZED-Vesalius)
How technical is a spaceship? Two Danish men want to be the first amateurs sending a human into outer space and bring him back again. Amazingly, their first steps seem promising. But can human intelligence overcome human sensitiveness and clashing egos? Filmmaker Kestner shows the human side of one of the most complex technical challenges: building a spaceship. Amateurs in Space depicts two Danish men, Peter and Kristian, trying to achieve their childhood dream. For six years, these amateurs were followed by filmmaker Max Kestner in their unrealistic project, since only three countries in the world have succeeded so far in actually getting a man into space and back again. But they are not complete beginners: Peter has put together a fully functioning submarine before. Although they use do-it-yourself materials and hairdryers, the complex project is coming along surprisingly prosperous. The greatest surprise in Amateurs in Space is the human side of the project, and not the technical one. The smallness of humanity may be the biggest stumbling block in whether or not this great project will be a success and will put Denmark on the map of spaceship building countries. It becomes clear why these kinds of complex projects are carried out by large and professional teams with concrete plans and strict leadership. A project like this easily ends up in a battle of egos. Or how the contrast between human intelligence and human sensitiveness can compromise the ultimate boy’s dream.

DAVID LYNCH: THE ART LIFE
BELGIAN PREMIERE
SCREENING: tue 28/3 at 22h (ZED-STUK)
Few contemporary directors have such a great aura around their work as does David Lynch, the man whose name has defined his own style. David Lynch: The Art Life is an intimate and highly creative journey through the masterful mind of David Lynch, whose life itself is like a moving eccentric artwork. And of course, this documentary tells his life story in a totally typical ‘Lynchian’ style. Whether art imitates life, or life in fact art, is irrelevant in the case of the eccentric director David Lynch, for whom art equals life. Lynch’s creative products are undoubtedly surrealistic, they originate from a specific personal background and philosophy. Director Jon Nguyen is looking for that certain ‘something’ of David Lynch and where it comes from. An intimate look at the life of the creative brain behind inter alia Eraserhead, Mulholland Drive, Blue Velvet and Twin Peaks.
Director Jon Nguyen, Rick Barnes, Olivia Neergaard-Holm, Country of origin United States Year 2016 Runtime 1h30 Contact information Chloe Tai Film Constellation LTD. 1 Green Bank E1W2PA London UK P: +4479 8452 3163 E: office@filmconstellation.com
Nguyen and his team have been following Lynch’s creative footsteps before and already created Lynch, a documentary about the film Inland Empire (2007). This time however, Nguyen opts for a focus on the extraordinary and unique connection between Lynch’s life and art, thus making this film more intimate than any other interview with Lynch ever. Bathed in style Lynch is portrayed in the typical strange, unusual, slightly unsettling atmosphere he is known and celebrated for himself. A perfect tribute to the unique genius that is David Lynch, who has already passed the age of 70.

DE KINDEREN VAN JUF KIET
BELGIAN PREMIERE
SCREENING: sat 25/3 at 19h30 (30CC/Wagehuys), thu 30/3 at 15h (ZED-STUK)
At the local primary school in the Dutch village Hapert in Brabant, Kiet teaches children of asylum seekers who fled from countries such as Iraq, Eritrea and Syria. At first sight, the children seem quite ordinary, but gradually the emotional injuries become visible, of which the heartbreaking scene in the gymnasium is a striking example. Their traumas and insecurities sometimes manifest themselves in expressions of fear and aggression, but in the care of the ever patient Mrs. Kiet the children are allowed to be a child again and play freely and fearlessly. Directors Petra and Peter Lataster followed Mrs. Kiet and her classroom for a year, meeting children from all over the world. They filmed the events from the perspective of the children and their height. The simplicity with which the children are brought into the picture, are similar to the style of Être et Avoir, the masterpiece of Nicolas Philibert, which the film is justly and deservingly often compared to. The directors’ approach lets us listen in on the conversations between the pupils, who are at times funny, and then again touching. Mrs. Kiet is a wonderful film, a tribute to the resilience of the child and the tireless efforts and dedication of Mrs. Kiet, a teacher you wish for every child.

Many dream about it, but few really realize it. Let alone keeping up with it unceasingly for five years. Rolf and his family go on a world tour. Not so much for the adventure, but mostly as a spiritual journey, in search of the meaning of life. Filmed with just one camera and no crew, Down-to-Earth brings us not only a genuine story of a family that is detached from our consuming society, but above all an ode to nature, intriguing encounters and commitments to others. Together with their three children economist Rolf Winters and his wife Renata Heinen leave on a grand world tour. Their adventure starts at the Anishinabe in North America, then passes along the native cultures of the Amazon rain forest of Peru, the deserts of Namibia to the Aborigines in Australia. Rolf and his family seek out the wisdom of the ancient sages and chieftains, known as the Earth Keepers. For years, the family lives in nature, and coming into closer contact with others and themselves. Back in modern life, the most difficult task turns out to be the integration of their gained knowledge and into the present life. This personal Dutch documentary combines images of nature and reflections on happiness and fear, truth and commitment, but also shows some intriguing images of the encounters between the family and various indigenous peoples. What begins as an adventurous trip finally results into a deeper search for the essence of life and, ultimately, their own self.

FROM BUSINESS TO BEING
BELGIAN PREMIERE
SCREENING: sun 26/3 at 15h (30CC/Wagehuys)
Three businessmen – a former investment banker at Lehman Brothers, a project manager in the automotive industry and a regional manager in the pharmaceutical sector – take up the personal challenge to escape the rat race and give deeper meaning to their working and private lives. Several experts in economics, science and meditation are trying to build a bridge and fill the gap between ‘work’ and ‘being’, offering a new impulse to the pursuit of viable work in which the welfare of all contributors and people involved forms the central topic. Documentary filmmakers Hanna Henigin and Julian Wildgruber were convinced that finding harmony in the combination of living and working should not be wishful thinking. They went looking for people who actively seek a healthy balance and were left inspired by those who believe they have found an answer to this important issue. An honest and straightforward film for anyone dwelling on the same question and struggling with the same issue: how do I truly wish to live and fill my time? And how do I want to work and fulfill my professional career? (ZED-STUK),
After much insistence Scottish photographer Harry Benson was persuaded to join The Beatles on their first tour in the US in 1964. The pictures Benson took became legendary: they were all lively and at the same time intimate photos and the start of a career filled with iconic images. Bensons lens witnessed historical moments, such as the assassinations of Robert F. Kennedy, Martin Luther King and John Lennon, and got very close to the most inaccessible artists of the 20th century, such as Andy Warhol, Truman Capote and Michael Jackson. But Benson also traveled to refugee camps in Somalia, infiltrated and witnessed KKK meetings and managed to sneak behind the gates of the IRA. However, the photographer paid a price for his full and exciting career. The story told by his pictures is a story of historical moments and characters, but also the story of Benson’s life and personality. With a considerable pinch of self-mockery, empathy for others and self-reflection, Benson browses through recent history using his controversial work.

In this Belgian co-production Raoul Peck starts from an unfinished novel by African American writer James Baldwin and travels through the black history of the civil rights movement in the 60’s, connecting it to the current #BlackLivesMatter. The text, written in 1979, is unfortunately still very relevant and discusses racism being rooted much deeper as a fundamental sense and conviction that in their essence and humanity other cultures and races should not be accepted. The film is a striking argument based on archival footage, film clips and current news images, all interlaced by the hypnotic voice of Samuel L. Jackson.

Every four years the woods nearby lake Aegeri in Swiss are cut. The still traditional way of working is passed on from generation to generation. Without being influenced by technology. Ins Holz is a sequence of beautiful shots of an almost forgotten job in Swiss nature. Every four years, over a period of three months in winter, wood is cut in a steep mountain forest above lake Aegeri. Over the years neither technology, nor progress has replaced the traditional and sustainable way of working. Even though technology could make the work a lot easier, the people there choose to preserve their tradition. So the cutting of the wood becomes almost a cultural event. A beautiful documentary with shots of breathtaking landscapes, about a traditional way of working, still not influenced by technology. The main characters in this short film are the employees of Oberägeri and Unterägeri, the two companies that cut the wood. LIBERATION DAY
BELGIAN PREMIERE
SCREENING: thu 30/3 at 20h & 20h30 (ZED-Vesalius)
The rock group Laibach, which was located in former Yugoslavia about 35 years ago, was very controversial from the beginning. It was primarily their visual style - with many references to fascism and dictatorships – that triggered both admiration and abhorrence. Ironically, precisely these rockers were invited to the first North Korean international rock concert in 2015. Liberation Day follows the band’s entourage from their arrival in North Korea onto their performance at the rock concert. The enigmatic Morten Traavik is both director of the film as was he the concert manager of Laibach. Like an invisible strategist he is involved with the secret, ruthless power problems that occur backstage, bringing the rock band where no rock band had ever gone before, all the way to the isolated North Korea. The confrontation between the Slovenian rock band and the strict ideology of North Korea, its powerful censorship and estranged public (totally unfamiliar with rock ‘n roll) provides the unique material for this original, funny and at the same time thoughtful documentary.

BELGIAN PREMIERE
SCREENING: sun 26/3 at 11h (ZED-Vesalius), mon 27/3 at 20h30 (Kinepolis), wed 29/3 at 17h (ZED-Vesalius)
Norwegian chess player Magnus Carlsen is called the Mozart of chess. He became the world’s most promising chess talent since Bobby Fischer. What distinguishes him from other chess masters is his intuitive ability. Magnus trusts his senses without dealing with the memorization of computer analysis. At the age of 25 he is able to beat 10 of the world’s best chess players, in these simultaneous games his gift becomes extremely apparent. Even if you know nothing about chess, this entertaining documentary is highly recommended for it is a celebration of young intuitive talent. We see Magnus as a warm and playful young guy, far removed from the classic image of the hyper-intelligent and nerdy chess masters such as Bobby Fischer, who are often prisoners of their own minds. Magnus was followed over a long period, so the viewer gets to see him grow and share his dream. Magnus is a film granting chess a whole new and unprecedented status and meaning, depicting a genuine and fascinating portrait of unexpected greatness.

SCREENING: mon 27/3 at 17h30 (ZED-STUK), thu 30/3 at 20h (ZED-STUK)
Ulrich Seidl, the master of the wonderful but uncomfortable documentary, examines the trophy hunting phenomenon of the white tourists in Africa. With the use of stylized pictures and his usual insidious humour, he portrays the process of these meaningless massacres and tries to grasp the motivations behind the dreadful act of trophy hunting. Every year countless European white tourists travel to Africa chasing their dream to visit the reserves and go on safari in for example Namibia. And the chase has become somewhat literal. Beer in hand, waiting for hours to see their prey, ready to shoot it from a safe distance, then triumphantly posing beside the bleeding lion, zebra or gazelle. Skinning and shipping the carcasses is a job for the poor black staff. The Austrian filmmaker Ulrich Seidl (known for his other work I’m Keller, The Paradise Trilogy and Hundstage) conveys the images and process of this senseless killing using stylized tableaux and his typical nasty humor. With his usual awkward camera techniques he tries to figure out what the motives of the hunters are and what drives them to engage in these fun raids.

Anita and Andres are in love and want to get married and have a baby. But like Rita and Ricardo, they are still going to a special school, where they are being prepared to be ‘responsible’. They wish to live independently, get a job they like and have chosen themselves, and want to get married to the man or woman they love dearly. But there are many obstacles between their dreams, hopes and wishes and the harshness and complexity of reality. They have reached the age and maturity to fantasize about a future, but lack the financial and emotional baggage to fully achieve their goals. The title of the film somewhat reveals the light touch with which this loaded subject is discussed. It is not the first documentary of Albredi, last year she was nominated for a European Film Award with short documentary I’m not from here.

THE ISLANDS AND THE WHALES
BELGIAN PREMIERE
SCREENING: tue 23/3 at 17h30 & sat 25/3 at 20h (ZED-Vesalius)
The Faroe Islands are an archipelago in the triangle Scotland-NorwayIceland. The islanders have been living there for centuries of what nature has to offer them: seagulls and whales. But their way of living and existence are threatened from various fronts. Scottish director Mike Day received the award of Best Emerging Filmmaker at Hot Docs with this visually stunning documentary. For centuries the islanders live of what nature has to offer them. Fathers teach their sons how to catch the best birds and the whole community looks forward to the reoccurring whale hunt. But due to the pollution of the oceans, the number of local birds is decreasing and the meat is full of toxins. A local toxicologist has discovered that the meat even causes cognitive growth retardation in children and many other medical problems. There is a lot of outside criticism on whaling. Environmentalists come to the islands, determined to intervene. All this leads to a defensive attitude of the islanders, who want to hold on to their traditions. How do the Faroese deal with this conflict of interest?

THE ROAD MOVIE
BELGIAN PREMIERE
SCREENING: tue 28/3 at 20h30 & thu 30/3 at 20h30 (Kinepolis)
In Russia, everything is possible on the road, so everyone is driving around with a dash cam. It is an insurance against unwarranted claims, but also a means against corrupt police officers. The main character of this long trip of dash cam videos is not a famous person, but the everyday Russian man or woman on the street, or rather road. We see Russians struggling with the forces of nature when driving by a forest fire, agonizing about a gang of paramilitaries stepping out of a car in front of them, being goodhearted when a young lady is being ripped off by a taxi driver. Repeatedly a person escapes death in the most peculiar and spectacular ways. A round luminous source in the sky is a UFO, or is it a crashing airplane or a meteorite? Who knows ... Director Dmitry Kalashnikov (yes, that is his real name) edited the found footage to Life as it is: Russia. And it is raw and unfiltered, absurd and frightening.

WHERE IS ROCKY II?
BELGIAN PREMIERE
SCREENING: fri 24/3 at 17h30 (ZED-STUK), thu 30/3 at 20h (Kinepolis)
In 2009 the American artist Ed Ruscha stashed away a big fake stone – which he baptized Rocky II – in the Mojave Desert. Casually he wishes scriptwriter Piere Bismuth luck in his quest for the stone. Bismuth picks up the gauntlet and goes out to find the stone. Where is Rocky II? is a wonderful unconventional documentary Bismuth himself describes as ‘fake fiction’. When artist Ed Ruscha – whose work is worth a lot of money – hides a giant fake stone in the desert, it is reason enough for Pierre Bismuth – known for his screenplay of the movie Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind – to go looking for the stone. But it turns out he is searching for a needle in a haystack. Bismuth is required to ask a private detective, as well as two screenwriters from Hollywood, for help. Private detective Mike Scott tries to find the stone via standard detective investigation, the screenwriters focus on what would be the best storyline. Who will find or get closest to Rocky II?

His first film as a director, however, is a very unconventional documentary in which finding the stone Rocky II does not only trigger an exciting quest, but also a funny reason to ask questions about documentary making, storytelling and the use of fiction and fantasy. For is filming a documentary not similar to true detective work? Or is it quite the opposite?

ZERO DAYS
BELGIAN PREMIERE
SCREENING: fri 24/3 at 17h30 & wed 29/3 at 22h30 (ZED-Vesalius)
Oscar-winning filmmaker Alex Gibney created an intriguing and infuriating exciting documentary about an elusive but real subject: the international war raging in cyber space. The film tells an hallucinatory and unsoothing tale any global citizen should watch. Because the knowledge to shut down everything all at once is already present, and unfortunately not always in the right hands. In 2010 computer hackers launched Stuxnet, a computer virus spreading through malware and so powerful not one computer was able to counter it. The virus launch was part of a true cyber war involving the United States, Britain, Israel and Iran. The computer worm was commissioned by the US and Israeli government with the intent of sabotaging Iran’s nuclear program. But it got out of control and spread to numerable computers worldwide. With two Oscar nominations and one effectively won Oscar documentary filmmaker Alex Gibney (Going Clear: Scientology, We Steal Secrets, Enron, Taxi to the Dark Side) is not to be underestimated. Zero Days is a true documentary thriller, with a hallucinatory tale that makes you shiver in and bounce off your seat. Razor sharp and – despite the invisible topic – visually captivating Gibney explains what was going on during the cyber war that caused the Stuxnet launch and sheds light on its implications. As journalist Kurt Vandemaele from newspaper De Morgen wrote: “No film deserves more applause than Zero Days.”

ALL GOVERNMENTS LIE
BELGIAN PREMIERE
SCREENING: tue 28/3 at 20h (ZED-Vesalius), wed 29/3 at 19h30 (ZED-STUK), thu 30/3 at 11h (ZED-Vesalius)
All governments lie, was the ominous slogan of the legendary American investigative journalist I.F. Stone, inspiring a group of stubborn journalists wanting to do in-depth and independent research. Popular and mainstream media, however, refuse to spend money and time to this kind of profound investigative research. Between 1953 and 1971 the passionate American investigative journalist I.F. Stone published a small, but very well-respected newsletter, called I.F. Stone’s Weekly. He emphasized a journalist must have the freedom and ability to work independently. By this statement Stone became an inspiration to many driven journalists and filmmakers. Michael Moore, for example, considers his own work as a continuation of Stone’s heritage. But also Glenn Greenwald, who exposed the secrets of Edward Snowden concerning the NSA and privacy issues, as well as John Carlos Frey, who conducted research on the mass graves at the US-Mexico border, refer and appeal to Stone’s leading example. Using visual fragments of the past six decades All Governments Lie narrates the convincing and chilling argument insisting on the crucial and essential work ethics of a journalist and the vital force of strong and motivated investigative journalism. In this film the time-consuming and hard work of an ensemble of journalists is documented, raising pressing questions concerning the value and credibility of what we read and see in everyday media.

CITY OF GHOSTS
BELGIAN PREMIERE
SCREENING: mon 27/3 at 19h30 (ZED-Vesalius), wed 29/3 at 17h30 (ZED-STUK)
How can ordinary citizens stand up to ISIS? The group ‘Raqqa is Being Slaughtered Silently’ (RBSS) uses a special form of warfare in the fight against ISIS: journalism. Oscar-nominated director Matthew Heineman (Cartel Land) follows the group of journalists in their valiant attempt to refute the misinformation terrorists continue to use in their battle. The impact on the lives of activists is massive. After their land was taken over by ISIS in 2014 a number of anonymous Syrian activists joined forces in battling the harmful propaganda and unjust information spread by ISIS. City of Ghosts follows the story of this group of courageous citizens working as journalists in the fight against all kinds of misinformation spread by ISIS. They live in hiding, always on the run and risk their lives for opposing the biggest terrorist organization of our time. City of Ghosts is a very personal and exciting story giving a unique insight into the lives of the members of RBSS. Director Matthew Heineman was praised and won the Candescent Award with this documentary at the prestigious Sundance Film Festival. He is no stranger though: last year he was awarded the jury prize for best director with his previous film Cartel Land. In addition, this film got him three Emmy Awards and an Oscar nomination for best documentary. City of Ghosts brilliantly captures the difficulties and personal sacrifices of the members of RBSS. Heineman surely knows what he is doing.

DEAD DONKEYS FEAR NO HYENAS
BELGIAN PREMIERE
SCREENING: sun 26/3 at 19h30 (ZED-STUK), wed 29/3 at 16h (ZED-Vesalius)
Director Joakim Demmer was absolutely stunned when he saw this dreadful paradox at the airport in Ethopia: exhausted workers were loading food, intended for export to Europe, while another team was unloading imported food aid, intended for inland distribution. His bewilderment soon gave way to anger. Demmer was immensely frustrated and angry to witness the results and injustice of land grabbing, which is nothing less than a modern form of colonization. Fertile land for agriculture and arable farming is often called ‘the new green gold’. Many developing countries are leasing millions of hectares of farmland to large foreign investors, hoping to receive some of the export earnings. But more often this practice leads to land grabbing, with major international players expelling peasants off their own property and chasing them away. Often these malpractices are indirectly supported by major organizations such as the World Bank. As is the purpose of a true documentary thriller, Dead Donkeys fear no Hyenas investigates the dark concept of land grabbing. Like most Westerners, director Demmer assumed that large, foreign investments in the agricultural economy of a developing country could only mean improvement and good news: a promise of increasing income and therefore prosperity for the population. However, gradually he discovers - together with the viewer that the reality of these international investments and trades is in fact more complex and far from unambiguous.

FREE LUNCH SOCIETY
BELGIAN PREMIERE
SCREENING: sun 26/3 at 20h15 & thu 30/3 at 12h (ZED-Vesalius)
What if everyone got an unconditional basic income? Would people still work? Or would we all prefer laziness and watching TV over honest working, thus confirming the stereotypical prejudices and justifying the public fear? And would the government be able to pay for all of it? What would the implications be from an economic, political and ethical point of view? Until recently, these questions were completely unmentionable or too far-fetched, but today they have become more present than ever. Free Lunch Society is investigating the possibility of a basic income for all, without being indebted to society or owing our community anything. The documentary focuses on the possibilities and consequences viewed from an economic, political and ethical angle. In Finland, the first experiments will be set in motion. But the debate is open for discussion and in fact on the table in other countries as well, such as Belgium, the Netherlands and Switzerland. Is ‘handing out money’ a solution to the decline of the middle class? Will it work? Can the introduction of a basic income deliver results? Or will it just remain a utopian figment of our imagination and naive dream?

MACHINE OF HUMAN DREAMS
BELGIAN PREMIERE
SCREENING: thu 23/3 at 19h30 (GroepT), mon 27/3 at 18h (ZED-Vesalius)
Robots will be the next ‘people’ and species on Earth and perhaps that day will come sooner than we expect’. For those unbelievers who are compassionately shaking their heads when reading this, Machine or Human Dreams can be a real eye-opener. Will robots ever be ‘really’ intelligent? And will we ever accept artificial intelligence? Roy Cohen goes out looking for answers ... Ben Goertzel is an eccentric technology guru who grew up in a hippie community. Both the period of the Vietnam War as his passion for science fiction motivated him in a cheeky and daring way to pursue a rational and non-violent way of living in a peaceful world. His entire life revolves around his personal creation, an artificial intelligence (A. I.) program called OpenCog, which is based on the human brain. In 2014 he received financial assistance from the government of Hong Kong, in order to personify and embody OpenCog. Talking about a dream coming true. In this documentary Cohen follows the eccentric Ben and witnesses OpenCog being embodied, but he also sees how Ben’s past haunts him and casts doubt on the future of the project. Because how do you know when an artificial program is truly successful? Will an A. I. program like OpenCog ever be ‘really’ intelligent? And above all, who will determine this?

SCREENING: fri 24/3 at 18h & sat 25/3 at 20h30 (ZED-Vesalius)
Bringing a child into the world is undoubtedly one of the most intense experiences of life. But within the context of poverty and a densely populated country, and at the same time an atmosphere of optimism and perseverance, you end up in the emotional roller coaster called Motherland. Probably one of the most intimate, but also most powerful films you will ever see. Obviously this documentary was praised and awarded at the prestigious Sundance Film Festival. Motherland takes its viewers behind the scenes of the world’s busiest maternity hospital, situated in one of the poorest and most densely populated countries in the world: the Philippines. The clinic is buzzing because women in Manila do not get two or perhaps three children like us Westerners, but six or more. In all the hectic, three women – Leah, Aira and Lerma – share their story, which is told through the narration of their contacts, families, doctors, social services and other mothers. Although all three of them have no ideal home environment, their strength shines through in their optimism, humor and honesty. It is a force they will undoubtedly need in the future.

PORNOCRACY
BELGIAN PREMIERE
SCREENING: sun 26/3 at 21h30 (ZED-STUK), tue 28/3 at 19h30 (ZED-Vesalius)
Never ever have we watched more porn than nowadays. With the rise of the internet and websites with amateur videos, the porn industry was subject to large changes. That is, behind many of these websites not a group of amateurs, but in fact a large multinational is holding the reins. How can a group of computer programmers without any experience hijack the entire adult web industry? And what are the consequences? Director and former porn star Ovidie wants to find out. Pornhub, YouPorn and 35 other companies? There is just one large multinational behind it. The traditional way of working in the porn industry is almost extinct, due to that one multinational. All kinds of websites streaming amateur videos as well as piracy result in the very different manner of porn production and consumption. Studios are going bankrupt, businesses have to shut down, actrices earn less money to do more extreme things. Meanwhile, Fabian Thylmann, one of the great leaders in the porn industry, gets arrested for tax evasion. How do you manage to gain a monopoly on the entire porn industry? As well as being a filmmaker, Ovidie is a journalist and the author of a dozen books, including Porno Manifesto (2002), a vivid denunciation of the preconceived ideas about the pornographic film industry, a book which lead to her nickname of ‘feminist porn intellectual’.

WAITING FOR GIRAFFES
BELGIAN PREMIERE
SCREENING: thu 23/3 at 18h & sun 26/3 at 18h (ZED-Vesalius)
A Palestinian vet tries to replace the giraffes who died in the zoo where he works. But how can the only zoo in occupied territory create more space for its animals, when even if the people living there are confined to a small closed environment? Will the giraffes be a first step in overcoming the conflict between people? A completely different view on the IsraeliPalestinian conflict. The zoo in Qalqilya, a Palestinian village near the Israeli border, is the only form of recreation for the children in the neighborhood. However, due to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict they have recently lost many animals. Dr. Sami, the veterinarian at the zoo, is trying to replace the popular giraffes. To do so, he must cooperate with other zoos, including one Israeli zoo. Obviously political relations become clear very quickly. Nevertheless, Dr. Sami will not rest until the zoo of Qalqilya meets the international requirements needed for a smooth cooperation with other zoos around the world. Waiting for Giraffes is more than a documentary about a zoo. The quest of Dr. Sami to gain international recognition reflects the harsh reality and the complexity of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. Even a zoo experiences that the West Bank is all about politics. But this film is not all doom and gloom, in fact director Marco de Stefanis made this documentary to show that there are indeed positive stories to come out of Palestine.

SCREENING: thu 23/3 at 22h (ZED-Vesalius), fri 24/3 at 21h30 (ZED-STUK), sat 25/3 at 17h30 (ZED-Vesalius)
A bizarre story of a stuntman who wants to jump across a river with his car and a musician making a special album about it: John Bolton perfectly combines both plot lines in a sassy and idiosyncratic documentary, titled Aim for the Roses. A must-see film called ‘the craziest, weirdest, wildest and brightest documentary in years’ in reviews worldwide. In 1976 Canadian stuntman Ken Carter wanted to jump over the St. Lawrence Seaway with his car, powered by a rocket engine, and land in a field of roses. In his jump, he had to cover more than a mile! Even the most famous stuntman ever, Evel Knievel, called it ‘the stunt of stunts’. Fellow-countryman and musician Mark Haney pays tribute to Carter 32 years later, by making a special solo album in 2008, totally dedicated to this daredevil and his crazy venture. Another 3 years later filmmaker John Bolton, also a compatriot, decided to combine both stories and created a musical docudrama called Aim for the Roses. Director John Bolton used archival footage and interviews, but also a re-enactment and some clarifying information of various experts. Mark Haney himself was responsible for the accompanying music. Bolton says he has always been fascinated by the story of the two men, who risked their entire careers by realizing such extreme projects. He himself took a risk as well with the absurd musical docudrama Aim for the Roses, but fortunately it proved to be a hit!

RAT FILM
BELGIAN PREMIERE
SCREENING: sun 26/3 at 18h & wed 29/3 at 22h (ZED-Vesalius)
‘Before the world became the world, it was an egg. Inside the egg it was dark. The rat nibbled the egg and let the light in. And the world began’, as goes the beginning of Rat Film. The film shows the city of Baltimore from a rat’s point of view. Like any other big city, Baltimore has a rat problem. Or is it a people problem? For who is actually trapped in a cage? The rat or the humans? In his first full-length documentary filmmaker Theo Anthony follows ratcatcher and piper Edmond, who guides the viewer through the streets of Baltimore. And by following the rats, he actually reveals the real problem of Baltimore and by extension many contemporary metropolises. The film thus becomes a portrait of the social confinement of the 20th century. In society there are different ‘cages’; the development of the rich neighborhoods in Baltimore on the one hand and the ghettoization of the black population on the other. Rat Film deviates from the pure perceptual storytelling and shifts its focus to the crooked, claustrophobic world of the rat. At a certain moment the viewer is treated to a portion of virtual reality, when the lens positions itself in the eyes of the rodent scampering around in a maze. Director Anthony reverts to what is called a ‘behavioral sink’, explaining people’s conduct in crowded communities as similar to the rat’s behavior. Or how a rat’s behavior serves as the reflection of human conduct.

A threefold welcoming speech unfolds: initially dismissive and sobering, then full of empathy and good will, and finally full of complex rules and incomprehensible procedures they will have to comply with. Stranger in Paradise tries to find a balance between fact and fiction and investigates the power relations between Europe and migrants. Wir Schaffen Das. Or will we not? And at what cost and conditions? The blunt but intelligent approach of director Guido Hendrikx is rather confronting and resembles the work of Renzo Martens, Enjoy Poverty: Episode III, also opener of the International Documentary Film Festival in Amsterdam at that time.

THE BOMB
BELGIAN PREMIERE
SCREENING: fri 24/3 at 22h (ZED-Vesalius), sat 25/3 at 18h (ZED-STUK)
The Bomb puts the viewer at the heart of the incredible power of nuclear weapons - the most dangerous machines ever built by man. This intense film explores the fascinating industry of nuclear weapons, from the Trinity Test in 1945 to the current state of nuclear technology. The immense and lethal force of nuclear weapons is indeed incomparable, resulting in people’s gloomy fascination with and dark attraction to them. Because of the perverse grander of their power and the beauty of their underlying ingenious technology nuclear weapons are by far the most fascinating, but also the most chilling machines ever built. Mankind has built complex computer systems to control them (hopefully), and manufactured rockets and bombers that transport or launch them. The weapons themselves are influenced by social and political reasoning and their existence is internationally kept within an atmosphere of secrecy, or even denial. The Bomb not only tells a story about nuclear weapons, but also tries to provide a total experience of the essence of nuclear weapons, through the use of impressive audiovisual simulations, archival footage, animation, music, text and images. It is intense, heartbreaking and nauseating: a true but terrible and haunting beauty. This film is a surprisingly intense overall experience that will completely blow you away!

I KILL SCREENING: sat 25/3 at 19h (ZED-Vesalius)
Follow Beatle, the kindest slaughter, and his way of working. He goes from farm to farm with his truck that says ‘I Kill’ and gets paid to shoot cattle. Let yourself be carried away in an exceptional story about the NewZealand way of life. I Kill follows Beatle, a man who earns his living by killing cattle. Beatle epitomizes an exceptional side of the New-Zealand way of life. He drives around with license plate ‘I Kill’ and his voicemail message is ‘I must be out killing, leave me a message’. However, he approaches his job in a serious and careful way. The documentary starts from the question if this man really likes his job.
Director David White, Paul Wedel Country of origin New Zealand Year 2012 Runtime 9 min. Cinematography Paul Wedel Music Paul Wedel Production David White, White Balance Pictures
Co-director David White knew Beatle already from his childhood. An anecdote from his youth, when he once was allowed to join his father and Beatle to see this last one working, did him think about a film about Beatle. That resulted in the short documentary I Kill.

BELGIAN PREMIERE
SCREENING: sun 26/3 at 11h (30CC/Wagehuys), tue 28/3 at 18h & wed 29/3 at 18h30 (ZED-Vesalius)
In In Defense of Food Michael Pollan refutes the often faulty information on nutrition, provided by all kinds of media. He travels around the world to show that many Western diets have mucked up our eating habits. 60 percent of Western food supplies consists of processed foods. The food is no longer a product of nature, but a result of science. The more we think about our food, the less healthy we seem to become. Pollan’s rules for a healthy diet are extremely simple, for example: ‘Don’t eat anything your grandparents would not recognize as food’. Shooting this documentary, director Michael Schwarz and award-winning journalist Michael Pollan worked closely together. Unsurprisingly In Defense of Food is based on one of Pollan’s bestsellers, carrying the same title. The documentary is grounded on the book, following it step by step, chapter by chapter, forming the perfect illustration of the strong arguments Pollan presented. In 2010 Pollan was listed as one of the top 100 most influential people in the world, according to Time Magazine. The documentary In Defense of Food was nominated for two Emmy awards.

SEED: THE UNTOLD STORY
BELGIAN PREMIERE
SCREENING: sun 26/3 at 17h30 (ZED-STUK), wed 29/3 at 21h30 (ZED-STUK)
During the last century, 94% of seed varieties has disappeared, mainly because a few gigantic companies manage and almost monopolize the majority of our seeds. But like a true David versus Goliath, a few rebels passionately try to revolt in order to preserve seeds and save them from their downfall. Farmers, scientists and advocates are putting up a fight worldwide to create a future for our food. Because history has already taught us that the definitive disappearance of various seed types can have catastrophic consequences. The heartwarming story of the defenders of seed diversity is not only contagious in its passionate narration and dazzling with its beautiful cinematography, the documentary also delivers a very fascinating insight into an unknown world. The importance of maintaining seed diversity is clearly represented and proven by various diversity defenders from Minnesota in the US, to Madhya Pradesh in India. A dazzling tribute to the vitality, diversity and beauty of seeds, some of which are as endangered as the polar bear.

How did con man Rudy Kurniawan betray wine merchants and collectors with fake wines during all these years? Kurniawan is infamous for being the first wine fraud ever to be caught in the US, falsifying award-winning quality wines from acknowledged wineries. With the help of a chemist he mixed wines until their taste resembled the flavour of an old, very expensive Bordeaux. And he succeeded, in fact he triumphed. Even Bill Koch spent up to 2.1 million dollar for 200 bottles of Rudy’s wine. This wine scamming game continued until 2012, when Kurniawan’s sour deception was exposed. Directors Jerry Rothwell and Reuben Atlas follow the detectives who finally unmasked Rudy Kurniawan – now firmly locked up behind bars. The cork of his amazing fraud popped when wine collector Bill Koch and winemaker Laurent Ponsot questioned the authenticity of Kurniawan’s rare wines. Sour Grapes shows the bitter side of the wine industry: a world characterized not only by good taste, but also by the unreal sum of money that naive wine lovers are willing to spend because of status rather than taste. Sour Grapes can thus be seen as a modern version of the fable The Emperor’s New Clothes.

THE FRUIT HUNTERS SCREENING: sun 26/3 at 14h30 (ZED-Vesalius)
The Fruit Hunters is not merely shedding light on the incredible variety of exotic fruits, the documentary also shows what it means to be obsessed with it. From the beautiful Umbria, into the hot jungles of Borneo, and even in your own backyard, fruit fanatics are everywhere! Director Yung Chang wishes to capture the experience of the fruit hunter. The sweet but healthy journey moves alongside diverse cultures and passes through beautiful areas. The viewer encounters different fruit hunters, including movie star and fruit fanatic Bill Pullman. It is surprising how a seemingly everyday subject like fruit can tell such a distinguished and compelling story. The Fruit Hunters changes the way we look at fruit. But Yung Chang also puts the exotic fruit hunting story into sheer contrast to its commercialization. Looking for the perfect type of apple or banana for export, the industry has created a monoculture bringing fruit diversity at risk. The work of the fruit hunters, as protectors of fruit diversity, has become a full-time obsession. Previously director Yung Chang made headlines with his award-winning documentary Up the Yangtze (2007), and with The Fruit Hunters, once again, Chang created a finger-licking sensational film.

MARCH OF THE PENGUINS 2: THE CALL
FROM 6 YEARS
BELGIAN PREMIERE
SCREENING: sun 26/3 at 14h00 (ZED-Vesalius), wed 29/3 at 15h00 (ZED-Vesalius)
After two months of filming in chilling cold weather in Antarctica, Luc Jacquet returns with a second documentary that captures the life of penguins. And what a picture! It was filmed from all sides: using drones and submarines, all in high definition 4K. The first film focused on the mating ritual of the penguin, but in this amazing sequel the courageous filmmaker explores the ‘vocation’ or ‘call’ of this magnificent animal. How does it feel to live in a freezer? What’s behind that strong instinct that drives penguins to go on tour? How do they survive? We become witnesses of this great adventure and experience the journey through the eyes of a young penguin who is subject to his first vocation and leaves for an unknown destination. We see how the little animal carves its way through the cracking ice and swims through icy water. We sympathize with his (supposedly) thoughts, fears and relief. Despite the dangers the animal and the film crew had to deal with - either the risks of predators or the effects of climate change - the film is primarily a tribute to freedom, cuteness and lightness. A film about an amazing journey full of challenges. Remember to wear a warm sweater!

FROM 10 YEARS
BELGIAN PREMIERE
SCREENING: sun 26/3 at 16h00 (ZED-Vesalius), wed 29/3 at 15h00 (ZED-STUK)
An adult eagle can get up to 7 kg and is therefore not a small cuddly bird. Nevertheless, Aisholpan, a 13-year-old girl, is not afraid to hold them. She decides to become a female eagle hunter, against all odds and the (all male) tradition. In The Eagle Huntress filmmaker Otto Bell combines breathtaking cinematography of an almost unreal and beautiful landscape with a heartwarming story about changing social structures. Aisholpan lives with her family in the Altai Mountains of Mongolia. She is expected to stay at home and look after her brothers and sisters. But Aisholpan wants to delve into the family tradition which uses eagles to catch foxes for their fur. Will she be able to prove herself and hold her own in a centuries-old tradition dominated by men? At first sight The Eagle Huntress resembles an archetypal ethnographic documentary film about an ancient people knowing how to survive in a harsh environment. But many modern elements sneak into this movie, and not only in terms of technology. GoPro and drones provide brilliant images, but also Aisholpan’s personality and characterization stands for an indication of the changing social structures we see all over the world. Part of the ‘better-thanDisney’ magic in this film is a result of the charismatic father who supports his daughter, despite the critical and somewhat disapproving community.

THE LOUVAIN SCENE SCREENING: sun 26/3 at 20h30 (Kinepolis)
Leuven, early 70’s, the substance of the student revolt has settled. The city gained a great reputation and was considered the hotbed of critical votes against activists of all sorts. Students are not only politically, but also culturally engaged; they are making music, organizing concerts and open bars. A new wave of Anglo-Saxon bands reached the mainland: the new folkies, protest song writers and rockers inspiring the spirits. A new type of bar appears; the pubs, music cafes where old jukeboxes have given way to record players and new LP’s are imported from London and listened to together. Music fanatics discuss new material under the blue smokescreens: musical philosophy, drunkenness and musicianship. Leuven was not as clean as it is today, and there was a mild and cheerful anarchy. The Leuven night life with its bars and pleasant atmosphere received a reputation she would be carrying for decades to come. Through its unique atmosphere the city became a true magnet for musicians, adventurers and creative entrepreneurs. The documentary film The Louvain Scene portrays the city as it was in the early 70’s and 80’s and reconstructs those memorable years on the basis of testimonies of musicians, producers, pub owners, managers and organizers. Those years prove to have been of great significance, for it was the time in which the foundations were laid for the next generations of Flemish pop and rock.

The legendary rock band The Stooges was at the start of a new music genre and witnessed the birth and creation of punk and alternative rock in the late 1960’s. Gimme Danger tells the story behind the band and gives insight into the musical, cultural, political and historical context in which they and their music arose. Gimme Danger is an entertaining documentary about the chaotic rise and fall, as well as the reunion of Iggy Pop and his iconic band The Stooges, of course, peppered with some music tracks, giving a unique glimpse behind the scenes of the initial commercial difficulties, but also a revelation of the key to their ultimate long-term success. A must-see for any lover of rock ‘n’ roll. Jim Jarmusch – considered the coolest filmmaker in contemporary art house circuit – chooses to focus on the Stooges, rather than the commercially better and more successful solo career of front man Iggy Pop. But Iggy himself is present in the film, and the center speaker of Jarmusch’s story, along with the other surviving members of The Stooges. The narrations are exquisitely wrapped with archival footage, explanations on The Stooges’ influences, as well as all sorts of sensational anecdotes.

ONE MORE TIME WITH FEELING SCREENING: sat 25/3 at 22h00 (ZED-Vesalius)
What was to be an ordinary ‘making of’ documentary about Nick Cave’s new album Skeleton Tree, became an intense portrait of a suffering artist, after the unexpected death of his son. Uniquely combining the creative process and his personal tragedy, One More Time with Feeling offers you the chance to get dragged into the world of Nick Cave & the Bad Seeds. Evil and darkness were always present in Nick Cave’s work. But fate hit him hard in the face and cut right through his heart, wrapping his life in blackness, when his son Arthur died in 2015, by falling off a cliff in Brighton. The immense sense of loss runs through the veins of the album Skeleton Tree and hangs over al the rehearsals, live recordings and Cave’s daily life, like an intense threatening but serene thunder cloud. Director Andrew Dominik did not create an ordinary music documentary, but composed an intimate document in which we follow the creative process of the troubled Bard. The songs on the record Skeleton Tree, the thoughts in Cave’s voice-over and the beautiful photography of the Belgian cinematographer Benoit Debie form a melancholic and artistic whole that reaches right into your soul.

Students of all ages are involved in the projects, at all levels. Mrs. Annelies Houpline, delegate of the organization Vredeseilanden and leader of the project in Leuven, will be joining Mohamed Ridouani (Municipal councilor of Education and Environment of Leuven) and Kwinten De Paepe, to explain and discuss the project and the documentary.
BURN-OUT, THE CREEPING VENOM? SUN 26/3 AT 17H (30CC/WAGEHUYS)
The relationship and balance between work and private life have been placed under extreme and increasing pressure. Burnout, bore out, depression... these disorders and illnesses cannot be denied any longer. On the occasion of the documentary, Bregje Hofstede (writer of the book Rediscovering your body) and Dr. Jan Vandenbergen (representative of the CM – Christian Health Services – and pleading for the recognition of burnout as a work-related disease) will talk about the subject and why it is important to recognize these problematic phenomena in our society. Other names joining this debate will be announced later on.
100 FOOD QUESTIONS IN 100 MINUTES TUE 28/3 AT 20H (AULA VESALIUS)
A panel of experts (nutrition, a llergies, HACCP...) will be answering all your questions concerning food: can you freeze spinach or does it become toxic? Is celery a helpful cure for impotence? Is cane sugar healthier than beet sugar? Should we use sea salt instead of rock salt? Is red wine good or bad for the heart? Are super foods really that super? … 102
PALLIATIVE CARE IN FLANDERS WED 29/3 AT 20H (AULA VESALIUS)
When the end is near, life raises the biggest of questions. Research shows that palliative care patients and their families often struggle with existential and spiritual questions, and aid workers are not always able to answer them, nor reassure the patients. In this DOCVILLE + session we will be focusing on this particular aspect of palliative care in Flanders. A debate in collaboration with Perennis – Center for Growth in Life and Death and the Flemish Palliative Care Federation.
DOCVILLE 2 WORKSHOP COOKING WITH THE PROFESSOR
WINE TASTING
FRI 24/3 AND WED 29/3 AT 18H (CVO/VTI) (1H THEORY + 2H30 COOKING CLASS)
FRI 24/3 AT 21H (STUK)
Professor Christophe Matthys (UZ Leuven) presents his idea of a healthy and feasible Belgian diet during the DOCVILLE festival. Get rid of all the hipster diets, super foods and gluten free products and meals: what must or mustn’t we and our children eat from a scientific point of view? Prof. Matthys (also a father) takes into account feasibility and taste, and is himself a big fan of ‘emergency dishes’. These dishes are tasty meals you can conjure up in only 15 minutes. Along with chef Manual Vanden Eynde, and especially for DOCVILLE, prof. Matthys will put together a number of healthy, affordable and achievable dishes that can be prepared by the participants of the cooking workshop at CVO/VTI Leuven.
Is the price of wine an indication of its quality? Does a good wine have to be expensive? Can your nose pick out the million dollar bottle? Feel free to discover your talent with Our Daily Bottle Wine Club and put your senses to the test. Learn to recognize the different taste and smell components of various wines and get to know their names and terminology. What is the difference between a Bordeaux or burgundy and other wines? Do you taste a terroir? Does the vintage year matter that much? After learning how to recognize a wine, we will obviously be tasting a selection of wines. To finish up we will have a sip from a bottle of wine which is normally far, actually very far, above our usual budget.
LECTURE ON HAPPINESS
BBQ TASTING
FRI 24/3 AT 21H (30CC/WAGEHUYS)
SAT 25/3 AT 20H15 (ZED-VESALIUS)
As an ambassador of happiness Leo Bormans has been traveling the world to spread luck and happiness. So there is no better authority in our country to discuss this film. Bormans is the author of the international bestseller The World Book of Happiness, which has been translated into over a dozen languages. In his lecture he will integrate the insights of universal scientific research on happiness into our own lives and the experiences in the film in a very unique way. Especially for us he will give an introduction to the movie as well as an epilogue. Consider yourself lucky enough to be there!
Texas ... the proverbial capital of barbecue? Perhaps, but in Belgium we now hold our own. Sticky Fingers BBQ , the ultimate mecca for the loving supporters of the low and slow barbecue in Belgium, offers a tasting of their ‘best-offs’. Ribs, pulled pork, Texas brisket, coleslaw with homemade lemonade or beer. Leuven will be briefly transforming into Texas.

FRUIT TASTING SUN 26/3 AT 16H (ZED-VESALIUS)
How wide the range or selection of exotic fruits may seem at your local hypermarket: it is only a fraction of the available fruit that is eaten in the rest of the world. In collaboration with BUD Holland (one of the main importers of exotic fruits and vegetables in Europe) the festival offers you a taste of a fine selection of fruits you have probably never even heard of, let alone have tasted.
RESEARCH ROULETTE MON 27/3 AT 20H (ZED-VESALIUS)
You cannot miss Research Roulette at the Weten & Geweten (Con-Science) series at the DOCVILLE festival! No screening, but a series of short presentations, videos and lectures presented and given by a team of specialists, led by Dirk Draulans and initiated by rector Rik Torfs. Research Roulette will bring you up to speed in no time, informing you about the progress of recent scientific top-notch Belgian research. A unique insight into a fascinating world.
CHESS TOURNAMENT FOR KIDS WED 29/3 AT 14H (ZED-VESALIUS)
Are you the next Magnus Carlsen? Then you should definitely take part in the friendly tournament of blitz or speed chess (game of max. 10 minutes) for children (<12)! A snack and drinks will be provided by the festival, and the first DOCVILLE chess trophy will be awarded to the winner. Accompanied by RenĂŠ Creemers of the Leuven Centraal association.

In a panel debate future evolutions will be discussed. All speeches and debates are in English. An initiative of Flanders Doc, with the support of Creative Europe Media Desk Flanders and DOCVILLE.

WRITING IN THE LOWLANDS In the documentary series Writing in the Lowlands renowned documentary filmmakers portray a number of Flemish and Dutch authors. This results in a remarkable cross section of the state of affairs in both disciplines: cinematography and literature. Documentary filmmaker Griet Teck (Feel my love) portrays Saskia De Coster (author of inter alia Vrije val – Free falling), while Eva Küpper (What’s in a name) puts the spotlight on Elvis Peeters (De ontelbaren – The countless). Emilie Verhamme (who made it to the competition in Cannes a few years back with Cockaigne) made a portrait of Dimitri Verhulst, whereas Ellen Vermeulen (9999) chose Lize Spit as subject, the author responsible for unleashing the literary hype around Het smelt – Melting, her first novel and soon to-be-film, produced by Veerle Baetens. Christina Vandekerckhove (De nada) tells the story of Randall Casaer, having a breakthrough with his comic debut Slaapkoppen – Sleepy heads in 2007. Kadir Balci (Turquaze) collaborated on the series as well and did so with a portrait of Stefan Hertmans, author of the awardwinning Oorlog en terpentijn – War and turpentine, enchanting us once again with his new work De bekeerlinge – The convert. This is just a small selection of the long series of short portraits you can discover at the DOCVILLE festival, entirely for free. During the festival, there will be 2 little movie theaters at the library – Bib Leuven (Tweebronnen), where you can watch all the portraits.

CANVAS SELECTS: 4X7 Tue 28/3 – 20h – Kinepolis
Each year Canvas, partner of DOCVILLE and documentary enthusiast, presents its own program at the festival. This year Canvas’s choice will be the series 4x7. 4x7 is a set of documentary series: each series consists of 4 short documentary episodes, lasting exactly 7 minutes apiece. The series have one thing in common: they depict compelling stories the creator somehow had to share. The authors of the short documentaries are rather famous individuals, such as Paul Jambers, Marc Didden and Stijn Coninx, but also less famous people, although well-known in the industry, like Dimitri Van Zeebroeck, Pieter-Jan De Pue and Sarah Bishop, as well as young talents like Lidewij Nuitten and Evy the Ceur. 4x7 is an initiative of Canvas and De Chinezen, in cooperation with the Flemish Film Schools and 48 film and documentary makers. At the DOCVILLE festival a few highlights of the past season will be screened, but we will also get some exclusive previews of the new season!

ABOUT LEUVEN Leuven is a relatively small city (100.000 inhabitants), Twenty kilometers near Brussels. Leuven is widely known for two things: it harbours one of the largest and oldest universities in Europe. The KU Leuven was founded in 1425 and has more than 55.000 students today. Leuven is also the hometown of INBEV, the largest brewery in the world, famous for its beer Stella Artois (since 1366), one of the best known (and may we add: best tasting) beers. Leuven itself was founded in the 11th century and has a fabulous historic city centre (with the magnificent town hall) and a worldwide known Beguinage (officially recognized as an UNESCO World Heritage site). Due to the creative input of students, it always stayed a vivid, young and creative environment. In a city where the historical buildings are only surpassed by the number of pubs and bars (following our last count: 180, but it’s possible we’ve missed some) there is always something going on. Leuven harbours a series of interesting cultural organisations and events. Besides DOCVILLE there’s also the International Arts Centre STUK (www.stuk.be), the M-Museum, the local cultural center 30CC (www.30CC.be), The Afrika Film Festival (www.afrikafilmfestival.be), the club concerts of Het Depot (www.depot.be), the International Short Film Festival Leuven (www.shortfilmfestival.org) and so on.
THE ROAD TO LEUVEN Leuven is a 20 minute drive from the Brussels National Airport (10 minutes by train). The lowcost airline company, Ryanair, flies to Charleroi or Zaventem from several cities.
BY PLANE
BY TRAIN In Brussels-Midi/zuid trains arrive from every corner of
Europe. If you are coming from London you can take the Eurostar. If you are coming from France, Germany or the Netherlands, you could take a train of the Thalys network. For international timetables, inform with our guest coordinator. BY CAR Leuven is situated close to the A3 (in Belgium called E40) highway between Brussels and Liège (Luik). Coming from the north; follow the A2 (in Belgium called the E314) between Leuven and Genk.
MORE INFORMATION You can find more detailed information about Leuven on the official website of the city (www.leuven.be) or at the Tourist Information Bureau (Naamsestraat 1, 3000 Leuven).
