BAINS PUBLICS SCREENING: Tue 02.4 (9.45PM) in ZED-Vesalius
The swimming pool as an illustration of the melting pot of the big city. A place where people train, chat, relax, wash themselves and wind down. ‘Bains Publics’ is a homage to the diversity of Brussels and how the swimming pool water washes away all the differences. A cinematic gem to enjoy. The Marolles, in the heart of Brussels. In 1953, the “Pools of Brussels” were inaugurated here. An architectural gem of three floors with two swimming pools and showers for people who do not have sanitary facilities at home. Almost 65 years after the opening, the complex is still a refuge for the inhabitants of this working-class neighborhood. They are a place of relaxation and regeneration for people of different ages, backgrounds and social classes. Everyone is equal in the blue water. The showers on the ground floor have been Viviane’s premises for more than 30 years, and she still helps everyone with a smile. On the first floor children’s feet gently shuffle along the edge and generations of school children have learned to swim here. On the third floor swimmers do their laps. As a lunch break, as a reflection or to battle an alcohol addiction by exercising.

A visual essay about an industrial city in all its facets. Charleroi, on the banks of the Sambre, is a sultry metropolis in which René Magritte, a homeless camp, advocates of a new urban design, deep red socialists, the discoverer of the Big Bang and the supporters of the Zebras intersect. Charleroi is facing the beginning of a new era, but no one knows exactly what that will look like. Charleroi, the former epicenter of the European coal and steel industry, is a city in decline without a clear view of a better future. It is also the hometown of writer, music producer and filmmaker Guy-Marc Hinant. Memories from his childhood bring hidden places to light in the dark city. They are the poetic note in this quirky and eclectic history of Charleroi. The story of the glory and fall of the industrial wonder is intertwined with his personal traumas and silent childhood memories. It is a back and forth in time and space with the only constant being the lights of the city against the dark hinterland.

HARRY GRUYAERT. PHOTOGRAPHER SCREENING: Sat 30.03 (6.30PM) in ZED-Vesalius
He is known as the Picasso of photography. Belgian Magnum photographer Harry Gruyaert thinks and frames in color. When he was 18 years old he fled gray Flanders and started traveling. In Morocco and India, he discovered light and color and a vital need to take photographs. Harry Gruyaert. Photographer, for once, focuses on the photographer rather than the picture. Harry Gruyaert grew up in a strict Catholic family in Flanders. His father, who works at Agfa Gevaert, thinks becoming a photographer would be sinful. And so Harry decides to leave home and travel. Stifled by his gray, oppressive background, a new world full of artists, writers and freedom suddenly opens up. Driven by a love-hate relationship with his homeland and the irresistible urge to become a photographer, Harry Gruyaert becomes the European pioneer of color photography. Director Gerrit Messiaen succeeds in letting a man who communicates with images tell his story with words. Through the lens of DOP and photographer Jimmy Kets we see the colors appear in Gruyaert’s world. The beautiful dreamy soundtrack by Tuur Florizoone is the perfect finish.

Inclusive education is a hot topic, but sometimes it seems we talk about it more than we actually look at it. That is the starting point of Ellen Vermeulen’s film, who previously caused quite a stir with 9999. In this highly stylized, observing documentary, it is not about arguments pro or contra. This is an invitation to look at how things really go down in a classroom. Irakli is in the sixth grade. He is in a wheelchair and fights an ongoing battle against spasms. He goes to a regular school, where he has a personal assistant. Still his presence also requires the teacher and classmates to adjust. Rosie, Sami and Nathan are also children with special educational needs who attend classes in mainstream education. When it comes to this type of inclusive education, many different opinions and various viewpoints are expressed, usually loaded with emotions. After all, it is not a theoretical discussion for the parties involved, but a reality that has a huge impact on daily life. The film does less talking and follows - without judgment - the daily reality of these children and their environment. It takes us into the world of the children who are the subject of this big debate, but have no voice.

MANU SCREENING: Sun 31.03 (6PM) in ZED-Vesalius
Manu Bonmariage has often been featured at DOCVILLE. The experienced documentary filmmaker started out as the spiritual father of the legendary news series Strip-Tease. Manu, who is going through the first stages of Alzheimer’s, is now the subject of a warm and humorous portrait made by his daughter Emmanuelle. Manu Bonmariage made over 80 documentaries, establishing himself as a key figure in the Belgian documentary world. He lost an eye when he was 6 years old, but that did not stop him from picking up a camera and building up an impressive repertoire. He always had a camera across his shoulder and looked at the world through the lens. The honest way in which he portrayed people and their stories full of compassion and often with a healthy dose of humor was unique. Today he is in his 70s and suffers from Alzheimer’s. While his memory plays tricks on him, his daughter Emmanuelle goes back in time and makes a warm, humorous, and extremely honest portrait of the man who reminds us of the people he so fondly portrayed.

In 2013, the Royal Museum for Central Africa closes for renovation. Not only the building and the museum cabinets are in need of renewal: the spirit of the museum has to be brought into this century. In COMRAF, a board of advisers, the process of decolonization leads to fierce discussions. While the tall statue of Leopold II is being disassembled, his spirit roams through the corridors and halls of the museum. The renovation of the Museum for Central Africa is an opportunity to modernize the existence and mission of the museum. The taxidermied animals, the traditional masks and the dusted artefacts have to give way to a more complete, modern view of Africa. The museum calls on experts and establishes consultations with delegates from African organizations that have united in a structure set up for that purpose, COMRAF. When exhibiting minerals from Congolese soil, a scientific explanation no longer cuts it. We also need to consider the horrible circumstances in which those raw materials were mined and the disruptive consequences for Congolese society. But in order to completely pry away the majestic building from its colonial identity, more fundamental questions need to be asked. Who is looking at who? And whose story is being told here?

SAKAWA SCREENING: Thu 28.03 (7.30PM) in ZED-Vesalius
“Beautiful lonely woman looks for love on Facebook. She would love to visit you, if you could just send some money so she can apply for a visa.” We’ve all received them: emails in which someone asks for some money in order to obtain an inheritance or get lottery money. This type of internet fraud has been around for a long time. For many young people in Ghana, it is their only way out of poverty. For his debut film, the Belgian-Ghanaian filmmaker Ben Asamoah returns to his homeland and introduces you to the people behind the emails. Meet your scammer! A wealth of information is hidden in the mountain of burning e-waste in Ghana. If you have some skills you can easily grab a pile of hard disks and download photos and private data from rich Westerners. In a dusty bar, sakawas hang out to exchange tips. OneDollar knows how to drive men completely crazy with his fake account. A picture of a busty woman and some flattering phrases with a high-pitched voice, that’s all he needs. Young mother Ama wants to earn some quick money to start her own business. A seasoned sakawa tries to teach her the trade, but it is trickier than it looks. To convince difficult customers, the sakawa resort to the black magic of local voodoo priestesses. The combination of modern communication and old rituals brings hope for a better life.

THIRD ACT SCREENING: Sun 31.03 (8PM) in ZED-Vesalius
We all age, even the driving forces behind the theater and dance company Peeping Tom. Third act sheds light on their trilogy Father, Mother, Child: the plays all center around the theme of family relations and the passing of time. These themes is also present in their lives off stage. Some actors are already quite old but have no plans to retire. All the world’s a stage, but what if the curtain is about to close? Leo is 80 and travels around the world with the international dance and theater collective Peeping Tom. Being active and creative in the company of young, energetic people keeps him young. In ‘Father’ he plays a man who is abandoned - dumped, you could say - in a retirement home by his son. Local seniors portray the other residents of the nursing home. For them being creative is an important part of their lives too. At home in Belgium, it is Leo’s wife who is in an institution and is waiting for her husband. Leo will have to choose between taking care of his wife and slowing down on the one hand and living an active life on the other. How do you want to spend your final years? Will there be someone who cares for you? In ‘Third Act’ the stories from the performances are interwoven with the personal stories of the actors and the local extras.

Cheap motels along a busy road. The guaranteed anonymity and low cost turns these motels into a special world of their own. In the States they are a kind of transit area for outsiders. A place where the victims of the American Dream end up, a haven for wandering souls. Some still dare to dream, others live day by day. The neon sign of a motel is not just a beacon in the dark night. It is a beacon for a lot of people in turbulent, economic times. A final anchor for those who have left everything behind. Or have lost everything. Unable to pay rent or even an advance, they have to resort to motels where they can pay day by day. Initially they plan to stay only for a little while, but this temporary existence often becomes their new way of life. The refuge can become a trap. They are on the edge of society and each of the residents runs the risk of losing their identity.

WHEN ARABS DANCED SCREENING: Sat 30.03 (10AM) in ZED-Vesalius
Fundamentalists have greatly changed the Muslim world. A liberated way of enjoying your body and culture has been restricted, seemingly without much resistance from the population. In ‘When Arabs Danced’, Moroccan-Belgian filmmaker Jawad Rhalib gives a voice to this silent minority who, against the current, continue to oppose radicalization. The mother of Moroccan-Belgian filmmaker Jawad Rhalib (Le Chant des Tortues, Les Damnés de la Mer) was a belly dancer. In a not so distant past, this Arab dance symbolised sensuality and femininity. Fundamentalists, in the name of Allah, then labeled dancing, music and other artistic expression as unclean. Rhalib was taught that he should be ashamed of his mother. What are the effects of this radical turnaround for dancers and artists in the Arab world? Will they continue and fight for the freedom of expression or will some self-censorship seep into their work? With testimonies from the Belgian playwrights of action zoo humaine, actress Hiam Abbass (Insyriated), Iranian-Belgian playwright Sachli Gholamalizad and his own mother, Jawad Rhalib shows how artists throughout the Arab world oppose and seek to an answer to this attack on (artistic) freedom.

INTERNATIONAL SELECTION
After a rigorous selection from numerous submissions and after visiting festivals around the world, DOCVILLE has nominated ten brand new author documentaries. Films that take you to all corners of the world: from Kabul to Mexico, from the Netherlands to the nonexistent Transnistria. The best film is awarded the Canvas Jury Prize.
ANTHROPOCENE SCREENING: Sun 31.03 (11AM) in ZED-Vesalius, Sun 31.03 (7.30PM) in Kinepolis, Mon 01.04 (5.30PM) in ZED-Vesalius
Using breathtaking footage, three award-winning directors illustrate the hypothesis that we have entered a new geological era: an age that - for the first time - is not determined by natural factors, but by human activity. A wonderful cinematographic testimony about the extensive human impact on our planet. Anthropocene is the third part of the trilogy including Watermark (2013) and Manufactered Landscapes (2006). With dazzling photography, the camera records how big the human impact on earth is, in the most literal sense: from the immense concrete sea defenses in China through psychedelic mines in the Russian Ural Mountains to the surreal lithium ponds in the Atacama desert. The directors are amazingly good at getting us to look at our world differently: from a neutral point of view, as if we were looking at the impact the human species has on the earth with extraterrestrial eyes. Without any explicit judgment, we witness an overwhelming beauty, but also the sobering scale of our impact.

100 years ago an incredible scene took place in Bisbee, a small town close to the Mexican border: over 1200 immigrants were brutally taken to the desert by the local sheriff and his supporters and left for dead. Filmmaker Robert Greene, alongside the current residents, takes on this black page from their history by recreating it. A creative, compelling documentary that brings past and present together in a clever way. The New York Times put Bisbee ‘17 in first place in their top 10 films of 2018. A huge honor, more than deserved. Bisbee ‘17 is an exceptional documentary that not only presents an important unprecedented piece of history, but at the same time points to contemporary issues such as immigration and trade union protests. Robert Greene is one of the most creative contemporary documentary makers who often works ‘outside the box’. By ingeniously playing with the concept of ‘re-enacting’ he brings present and past closer together. In his earlier hybrid documentaries Actress and Kate Plays Christine, an actress became the ideal tool to make a very complex case clear. Our understanding of an event from the past does not simply consist of a list of facts. It is full of assumptions and prejudices from the present. With Bisbee ‘17, Greene has truly outdone himself.

CLOSING TIME SCREENING: Sun 31.03 (9.45PM), Tue 02.04 (3.45PM) in ZED-Vesalius
Three o’clock at night in Taipei, a city that never sleeps. At a busy intersection Mr Kuo and his wife have a simple food stand, where they cook for anyone who braves the night. An infinite ballet of night owls, hurried suppliers, fleeting conversations in a rainy, neon-lit anonymous corner of the city creates an intriguing, hypnotic viewing experience. Under the fluorescent light of a viaduct, even in the middle of the night, there is still a lot of activity. Kuo and his wife run their simple eatery, scooters zip through the jumble of merchandise, bright red fish in an aquarium give each other kisses. Director Nicole Vögele calmly registers, wide shots are interspersed with close-ups. Sometimes the images are humorous, like when a stray dog ??quietly waits at a crossing until the pedestrian light turns green. Sometimes it takes a while before we understand what or who we are looking at exactly, but the hypnotic rhythm continues to intrigue. Closing Time has already won several prizes, including the Special Jury Award at the prestigious Locarno film festival. A fascinating and playful viewing experience that takes you to the other side of the world.

This hilarious and intimate portrait of two impetuous teen brothers won the coveted audience award at IDFA. The audience fell in love with slightly autistic Peter and his brother Matthew. They both have red hair, but that’s about as much as they have in common: Peter is obsessed with Expedition Robinson and constantly votes off family members, while Matthew mainly wants to get rid of his fear of dogs. During one summer, the film records the charm of their fraternal love-hate relationship. Peter is hyperactive, an extrovert and thinks of himself and the rest of the family as participants in the television program Expedition Robinson (Survivor). Every day he plays the elimination rounds according to a fixed ritual. His younger brother Matthew is more mature and often bewildered or embarrassed by his energetic, crazy brother. The film follows their daily lives, with occasional violent quarrels but above all a warm and cozy family life. As much as they like to poke fun at each other, they accept each other’s shortcomings. Debuting director Ben Mullinkosson brings the story about the brothers in an airy and open way. He avoids a ‘fly-on-the-wall’ approach and we regularly hear him give comments or see him appear in mirrors. A film that balances between an observing documentary and home movie and brings a loving ode to youth and family life - no matter how intense, crazy and wry it may be…

KABUL, CITY IN THE WIND SCREENING: Thu 28.03 (9.30PM) in ZED-Vesalius, Wed 03.04 (6PM) in ZED-STUK
When Afghan capital Kabul is featured on the news it is often as a gray place where death lurks, but here the director chooses to capture the vibrant life of this city. For three years, the film follows a weed smoking bus driver who is barely able to bring his passengers home safely and the two young brothers Afshin and Benjamin. A special portrait about daily life in a city where there is a permanent threat. For the film Kabul, City in the Wind, director Aboozar Amini returned to his hometown. He spent hours in a local bus that has been traveling the same route for 40 years, from West Kabul to the city center. During these rides he meets Abas, Afshin and Benjamin. Abas is an impulsive, spontaneous bus driver who knows his route like the back of his hand. While driving his rickety bus, he muses about his hopeless existence, sings songs and inhales nonstop from an improvised hash pipe. Abas and Afshin are two brothers from the poor part of Kabul. When their father leaves the country for security reasons, the eldest brother Afshin becomes responsible for the family. Without romanticizing, the film shows another Kabul, a world besides the violence, full of life and beautiful characters. A moving, beautiful portrait of everyday life that continues in spite of everything.

Mexico City: 9 million inhabitants and less than 45 official ambulances. The desperate situation of health care leads to an underground industry. The Ochoa family owns a private ambulance. Life-saving for the wounded, a bitter competition for the family. An incredible journey through a nocturnal Mexico. Midnight Family jumps on board of the private ambulance of the Ochoa family. They try to save lives by bringing injured people to the hospital and hope to be financially rewarded in exchange. A struggle that often brings them into difficult situations. But this is not their only struggle. It is a race with other ambulances to be the first to arrive on the scene, while police officers obstruct them and even demand kickbacks. The rules are immediately clear: money is power. Private ambulances, hospitals and the police are connected in a web of financial self-interest. Exciting scenes show the different street scenes in a nocturnal, corrupt Mexico. A compassionate portrait of a family that places its priority on the people who they transport, but also hopes for money to survive. Frustrating and moving. A film that is simultaneously as exciting as an action movie and silent like an intimate family drama with an eye for stunning cinematography.

Over the course of 12 years Liu Bing filmed himself and two of his skater friends. Over the course of the 12 years the gap between youth and adulthood, between boy and man, is inevitably bridged. An authentic documentary that was bombarded with prizes. An ode to being young, growing up, chasing dreams and letting go of certain hopes. Three high school friends grow up in the heart of the American Rust Belt. Growing up here usually means a future of unemployment, poverty, addiction and violence. These friends find an outlet in skateboarding. One of them, Liu Bing, films all of their adventures and records how they inevitably tumble into adulthood: they find jobs, get steady relationships, have children... Years later, he returns to his birthplace to see what has become of his friends. Minding the Gap has won countless international prizes and was unanimously honored for its authenticity. Director Liu Bing is not an outsider, but sits in the middle of this unique registration of the big leap across the gap from youth to adulthood, from boy to man. A jump with a lot of pitfalls in between.

Idealistic shepherd Stijn has a hard time dealing with the tough economic reality. After 10 years, his ideals have been infected with a frustrated anger. A tragicomic portrait of a man in the middle of the universal story of David against Goliath, of ideals versus practice, of dreams and disappointments. Ten years ago, Stijn was a cheerful, laid-back man full of ideals who was living the dream as a shepherd: alongside his flock of sheep and faithful quadrupeds he crossed through nature reserves so that they could be maintained in an environmentally friendly way. But the peace and romance associated with the ancient profession of herding sheep turns out to be hard to hold on to. It is becoming increasingly difficult to find new assignments due to the tough competition from large companies and Eastern European shepherds. With the camera in its wake, the shepherd roams through beautiful Dutch landscapes. He still talks passionately about his profession, but the persistent stress has also turned him into an angry man with a quick temper. His busy family life keeps him going in a time when ideals clash with a bitter reality.

A report of love, friendship and growing up in a European area that has never been recognized as an independent country: Transnistria. The dreamy documentary follows three young people in an intimate way, a brief idyll. Because in a country that does not exist, life is extra volatile. Transnistra won the Big Screen Award at the Rotterdam Film Festival. Rightly so, because this pearl, completely filmed on 16mm, is a cinematic highlight. A blistering, carefree summer in Transnistria. Charismatic Tanya and her friends wander around in nature or along dilapidated flats, they seek each other out for short flirts or just for fun. They fill their days with friendship, puppy love and sometimes also rivalry. They live in a country that does not exist, with few possibilities for the future. It makes the young people wonder whether to stay in this non-existent country or move away, if they have the money to even consider this choice at all. With beautiful handheld 16mm shots Anna Eborn manages to capture youth in a country that has been fighting for recognition for 27 years. Even though they live in a little-known corner of Europe; yet the teenagers are mainly young people with recognizable lives, desires and questions. A small story in an environment that deserves to be seen.

ARTIST IN FOCUS Andre Singer is a monument in the world of documentaries. After his doctorate in anthropology, he started making nonfiction in the 1970s. He produced over 55 documentary films and series, including many award-winning titles and collaborations with well-known names. He produced Joshua Oppenheimer’s Oscar-nominated documentary The Act of Killing (2014) and the worldwide TV series Stephen Fry in America. But his main brother-in-arms is Werner Herzog, for whom he has been producing films for a quarter of a century. In 2014, Singer took place in the director’s chair for the memorable WWII documentary Night Will Fall. His last achievement is another collaboration with Herzog, this time as co-director of Meeting Gorbachev. The perfect occasion for DOCVILLE to put the spotlight on him as Artist in Focus.

Documentary god Werner Herzog meets one of his heroes: former Soviet president Mikhail Gorbachev. A cinematic encounter that recreates the life of the former world leader. Gorbachev speaks openly about his eventual political downfall and the machinations behind it. A unique look back at world history by a key figure in that history. He is 87 years old now, but Gorbachev still has as much charisma as when he introduced some reforms as a world leader, which would change the Soviet Union and by extension the world forever. He was at the helm when the Cold War came to an end, the nuclear disarmament was deployed and the Berlin Wall fell. Gorbachev also speaks openly about the end of the Soviet Union, the rise of Yeltsin and the dark forces that played a role in this. Herzog speaks with the former world leader three times over a period of six months. The interviews are supplemented with comments, archive footage and interviews with other prominent politicians from that time. A beautiful portrait of a fascinating figure, who can not form a greater contrast than with current Russian president Putin.

Night Will Fall is made entirely with original and unique footage from 1945: film footage made by the Allies when they liberated concentration camps. The footage ended up with renowned filmmakers like Hitchcock so they could turn it into a documentary, but it remained unfinished for 70 years. Andre Singer finally took control and completed this essential documentary. When British troops started liberating concentration camps in 1945, they brought a lot of war and news photographers with them. They were instructed to capture as much of the horror as they could so they could share it with the rest of the world. Hours of film were passed on to none other than Alfred Hitchcock and Sidney Bernstein. Unfortunately, they never finished their project: the film remained in the archives for seven decades. Andre Singer dug up the images, and finished it with the help of, among others, Helena Bonham Carter. In 2014 the film was shown for the first time: it is a milestone in both the history of the Second World War and war photography and cinematography. Night Will Fall is one of the most chilling, but also one of the most important documentaries in British film history.

WHERE THE WIND BLEW SCREENING: Tue 02.04 (10.15PM) in ZED-STUK
Where The Wind Blew paints a picture of the arms race during the Cold War, and its consequences that carry much further than you would think. Many of the nuclear tests were carried out in Kazakhstan. The people, however, revolted and it became the first country to obtain a ban on nuclear testing. This touching story is told by victims, witnesses and activists. For forty years, the people of Kazakhstan were victims of the arms race between the then USSR and the United States. Nuclear weapons were tested non-stop on the Semipalatinsk site. With the help of touching testimonies and archival footage Where The Wind Blew tells the story of how citizens joined forces to stand up for themselves. They fought a battle to ban the terrible tests, a daring battle against their own government and the US. In 1989 Kazakhstan eventually became the first country to ban nuclear weapons testing. However, the story does not end there: the traumatic traces of the nuclear weapons remain visible. Moreover, the survivors are painfully aware that the arms race may have started again, and that nuclear weapons are still being built around the world.

ONE CHILD NATION SCREENING: Thu 28.03 (6PM), Sun 31.03 (10PM), Wed 03.04 (8PM) in ZED-STUK
When the People’s Republic of China wanted to tackle the problematic population growth at the end of the 1970s, they opted for a drastic intervention: every couple could only have one child, a second child was punishable. Especially in the first few decades, the introduction of this rule caused dramatic consequences: forced sterilization, selective abortions and the neglect, sale or killing of girls. One Child Nation won the Jury Award for Best Documentary at the Sundance Film Festival. Nanfu Wang is a name to keep in mind. Only three years ago she made her debut film Hooligan Sparrow, which immediately landed on the Oscar shortlist for Best Documentary. Successor I am Another You was screened at DOCVILLE last year and her most recent documentary One Child Nation immediately won a prestigious prize. After Wang herself became a mother for the first time, she became intrigued by the One Child policy that China followed for decades. Her research into the (side) effects of the severely imposed family limitation is at times hallucinatory. She has conversations with victims, parents and children, as well as party members who have to defend, introduce and control these politics. The figures and factual data related to forced sterilization and child neglect are shocking and reveal a painful truth about the consequences of an unseen social experiment that affected and destroyed many lives.

Nigeria is Africa’s largest oil producer and with 190 million inhabitants it has the seventh largest population in the world. Yet less than half of Nigerians have access to electricity. Residents who do have access, only have it for at most a few hours a day. Reason enough to not pay the bill, certainly. A cat-and-mouse game between illegal connections and an energy company that tries to reinvent itself. The electricity problem affects the daily life of the population and the economic and social progress of Nigeria as a country. Accidents are commonplace and the infrastructure falters on all sides. No one knows the frustrations of the Nigerian population better than Martins, a dedicated family man and electrician. He works for a private energy company and every day he works on the unstable and unreliable infrastructure, while he is also up against black market electricians and the many illegal electrical connections. His colleague Deborah is a marketer whose job it is to collect unpaid bills. Take Light unites the experiences of Martins and Deborah with other compelling and dramatic stories. A captivating portrait of the people behind the statistics, people who continue to hope for improvement despite all the difficulties because “development is a marathon, not a sprint.”

THE BORDER FENCE SCREENING: Mon 01.04 (6PM) in ZED-STUK, Tue 02.04 (8PM) in Kinepolis
2016. The so-called ‘Balkan route’ is closed. Austria is very concerned about a potential refugee flow that would enter the country illegally via the Brenner Pass. The solution? A 370-meter long fence. But soon it turns out that that is not the ideal solution. Old-timer Geyrhalter succeeds better than anyone else at capturing an observing, beautifully portrayed and at times hilarious portrait. Nikolaus Geyrhalter is no stranger to DOCVILLE. The prize-winning director succeeds time and time again at taking a pretty well-known fact and approaching it in a way that is unique and gives the viewer new perspectives, both literally and figuratively. After our food production (Our Daily Bread), our nightlife (Abendland) and our buildings (Homo Sapiens), Geyrhalter focuses on a very public theme: the walls that are erected at national borders to keep out refugees. The area around the Brenner Pass - the border area between Austria and Italy - suddenly became the stage for a changing policy in 2016. 370 meters of wire fence would have to keep migrants from entering Austria. But the inhabitants of this area are as afraid of the fence as they are of the direction in which their country is evolving. With patience and precision, Geyrhalter manages to capture the landscape and its inhabitants in long high-definition shots. He interviews local people about the fence, refugees and politics. The diversity of voices give color to the film. Harsh and human at the same time, The Border Fence is a documentary with an important message that brings out many new perspectives.

This fly-on-the-wall documentary follows Steve Bannon, the controversial ex-advisor to President Donald Trump. The impact of the former head strategist of the White House penetrates deep into Europe, even into Belgium. Bannon, after all, fights for a populist world revolution and tries to mobilize and unite extreme right-wing parties for the elections of the European Parliament in 2019. When Bannon left his position as chief strategist of President Trump in August 2017, his game was not over. On the contrary. The fact that he no longer exercised this important official function gave him more freedom. The man who, like no other, can promote himself through controversy, turned his gaze beyond the American borders, towards Europe. The Brink follows Bannon during the 2018 midterm elections in the US and sheds light on his efforts to mobilize European right-wing extremist parties. He sees himself as the leader of a worldwide populist movement and tries to unite right-wing extremists from UKIP to Vlaams Belang in order to win seats at the European parliamentary elections in May 2019. Director Alison Klayman (Ai Weiwei: Never Sorry) offers an unseen immersion in the world of one of the most bizarre influential characters of our time.

Democracy and unrestrained economic growth. These two cornerstones have been the foundations of Western society for decades and are usually regarded as perfectly complementary values. Pulitzer Prize winner Chris Hedges argues that they are actually each other’s enemies. Held in a stranglehold, democracy is being suffocated by a ‘corporate coup d’état’ in which companies and billionaires increasingly take control of the political process. A shocking pamphlet about the loss of Western democracy.

When a robotic arm kills a worker, who is responsible? And if the police use a robot to take out a shooter, is it fundamentally different than when an agent fires the shot? The ubiquity of AI raises questions, but the dangers point to a profound problem that concerns us all. The automation of simple, routine and repetitive work has been going on for some time, but in recent years more and more complex processes have also been taken over by robots or artificial intelligence; just think of a self-driving car or police or demining robots. According to Hollywood, the danger of AI is in malicious or independent robots that deliberately want to destroy humans. Director Pozdorovkin wants to show that the danger lies entirely elsewhere, but is even more real. The effects of automation on an economic, psychological and social level appear to be extensive and harmful in the long term. In order to demonstrate this, Pozdorovkin does not so focus on the technical developers who explain the powers of AI, but on the people who are confronted with it in daily life. Their stories are remarkable and illuminating. In addition to the series of fatal incidents The Truth about Killer Robots outlines the dangers on an economic, psychological, moral and even biological level.

THIS CHANGES EVERYTHING SCREENING: Sun 31.03 (6PM) in ZED-STUK, Tue 02.04 (7.45PM) in ZED-Vesalius
Hollywood is a perfect microcosm that can hold a mirror to our society. That mirror is not always flattering. This Changes Everything reveals how gender inequality is firmly embedded in the film industry. It is still a man’s world, where women have to fight hard for their place. And it used to be so different: in the period of silent films, most directors were women. What has changed? Why? And what can be done about it? A whole series of prominent women - actresses, directors, technicians - discuss and outline a sobering picture of gender inequality in Hollywood in this documentary. Meryl Streep, Natalie Portman, Gillian Anderson and many other women make their voices heard. This Changes Everything is critical, loud, but also practical and hopeful. Without blind hostility but with passionate perseverance, this film refutes every argument for existing gender inequality.

CHINA LOVE SCREENING: Thu 28.03 (9.30PM), Sat 30.03 (6PM), Thu 04.04 (8PM) in ZED-STUK
In the heyday of the Cultural Revolution, romantic love was still considered a capitalist concept in China. But now China has completely fallen in love with love. Weddings are big business and the wedding photography leads to - at least to western eyes - unbelievable scenes. The groom as centaur with his beloved on the back? Or a graceful mermaid in the arms of an uncomfortable Neptune? Tackiness is no objection in the search for the ultimate picture. Photographer Olivia Martin McGuire is an expat in Shanghai and was amazed at how widespread the stunning photoshoots of future couples are. In these photos the young couples live out their wildest fantasies: they pose in opulent 18th century interiors, underwater or floating in the air. The crazier and the more luxurious the better. What may seem childish or tacky to outsiders is actually the expression of the new Chinese dream: status, romance and wealth can now be celebrated openly. This is a radical break with the past when the Party decided who made up a good couple and when wedding photos invariably showed a man and a woman in similar Mao uniforms. Immerse yourself in the trillion yuan industry of Chinese wedding photography during a crazy ride full of glitter, glamour and abundance. You will witness a break with the past, you will see people dealing with social pressure and even ... real love.

In a small village in the north of Denmark, a remarkable number of men are married to Thai women. For decades, Sommai, a local matchmaker, has been bringing them over from her former village. This is not the usual story of exploitation by rich Western men. Thanks to Sommai who defends, follows up and coaches ‘her’ girls, the possible relationship starts out with a balanced and positive approach. A surprisingly empathic film about love, dreams and migration. Former prostitute Sommai is married to Niels and has been living with him for years in Danish Jutland. For twenty-five years, she has been setting up women from her home village with lonely Danish men, so that now almost a thousand Thai women live in the Jutland region. Director Janus Metz and anthropologist Sine Plambech follow four of these Thai-Danish couples. The film not only highlights the motivation of Thai women to move - women who often see it as a way out of prostitution - but also raises open questions about love in an arranged marriage: can you learn to love someone? How do you deal with the language barrier? And does the homesickness ever go away? With images spanning ten years, Heartbound is an atmospheric film that sheds a new light on concepts such as love, sex and migration.

Love is ... more complicated than a Hollywood movie. But no less funny, tender or moving. Love Etc. tells five true stories about love. Stories as diverse as New York, the city in which they unfold. An ode to love in all its forms and the ideal film for a first date. Young or old, straight or gay, single or married ... everyone experiences love and its whims. Love Etc. observes various characters in different stages of love during one year. A portrait that is as colorful as New York itself. From a young childhood love to a decade long marriage, just married to recently divorced. But also a single gay man’s intense desire for a child. The film shows love in all its forms. Recognizable feelings emerge and bring the viewer to discover that the “etc.” is perhaps the most important part. A witty and poignant documentary about the universal stages of a theme with many different sides: love.

This Marianne is Norwegian Marianne Ihlen, his lifelong muse with whom he started an intense relationship in a time of free love. Nick Broomfield, director of documentaries such as Whitney: Can I Be Me, Biggie & Tupac and Kurt & Courtney, follows their unconventional relationship from the early days in idyllic Greece. Does love have to be conventional? Marianne & Leonard: Words of Love is a beautiful illustration of the twists and turns of a complicated relationship that has produced some of Cohen’s most famous songs. Archive material and some recent interviews tell the story of the interrupted yet never ending love that began on the island of Hydra. Cohen was mostly a writer at the time - the songs came later, when the melancholy poet evolved into a prominent musician. When Cohen became famous, and Ihlen became known as his muse, their relationship suffered and they lived apart more than they lived together. Still, their connection remained strong, even after Ihlen returned to Sweden. A love story that defies conventional structure and slides back and forth in time within a rough chronology.

Mating is an intimate portrait of two millennials who grow up in a world where love is increasingly situated in a digital landscape. Is there still intimacy in a world of Facebook, Instagram and Tinder? A slice from the lives of two young people. Swedish Naomi (22) and Edvin (20) agreed with director Lina Mannheimer to give weekly interviews during a year. Mannheimer followed them on their journey to adulthood, a journey full of challenges around studies, work, relationships with parents, friends, love ... especially love. The development of their digital personas is not unimportant in the contemporary era. Naomi and Edvin balance on the thin line between their public and private selves. An intimate observation of the millennial generation in which dreams, relationships, fears and challenges are openly addressed, with an unexpected twist.

Marjon is 32 years old, single, and hates questions like “But why are you single?”. She hates them so much that she made Single, a 4-part series in which she, together with a number of experts, answers a number of these questions: is she missing out as a single person? Why doesn’t she have a partner? Is it her own fault, or are there just no good men for her? The four episodes have been assembled into one full-length film, just for DOCVILLE. Finding a life partner seems to come so easily to some, while others never manage. The Dutch Marjon Moed notices that she is treated differently because she still has no partner at the age of thirty-two. She wonders why she is seen as the big exception in a society that seems to be built for couples. She notices, for example, that it is almost impossible for her to buy a house as a single. Is that fair? In the four-part documentary Single, which is screened exclusively as a full-length film at Docville, Marjon takes a look at herself and her life. She meets with a dating coach, a therapist, a number of ‘near-exes’, her friends and a whole group of other singles. The viewer joins her in her quest for answers: why is she single? Why is that bad? Is it her own fault? And above all: what can she do to find a partner?

People often laugh at them, the so-called flat-earthers: the people who believe inexorably that the earth is not spherical but flat. And yet the number of followers continues to grow. With an open mind, director Daniel J. Clark presents the supporters and their arguments to you in this funny, but also intriguing documentary. Can they convince you? For most people worldwide there is no doubt: the earth is a globular planet. However, there is a small, but growing group that is convinced that this common view is the result of a global conspiracy that hides the truth. The truth that the earth is flat. They see themselves as the ‘truly critical’ freethinkers who do not just go along with what is being dictated. In their eyes they are the only ones who are not blinded by the organizations that hold the reins, like NASA and the CIA. A respectful look behind the scenes at one of the largest flat earth organizations, with its colorful figures, amazing arguments and literally incredible theories.

What begins as the unraveling of murder plot slowly turns into a true thriller that surprises you at every turn. On the night of 16 September 1961, UN Secretary-General Dag Hammarskjöld’s plane crashes under suspicious circumstances in the Congolese province of Katanga. Together with Swedish private detective Göran Bjorkdahl, director Mads Brügger, dressed in a white safari suit and a hat, trecks across the African brousse in search of answers. Could Hammarskjöld have been murdered by powerful political opponents? And who left the ace of spades death card on his body? The duo ends up in a web of deception, betrayal and more questions. Every year, tens of thousands of young people start a nursing study. An intensive and difficult course, in which they not only gain a lot of knowledge and learn technical actions, but also prepare for great responsibilities. A moving confrontation that does not shy away from human fragility. Ambition and idealism go hand in hand. The students at the “Institute for Nursing” are dedicating their lives to vulnerable bodies that need care and knowledge. A learning process with many highs and lows. From a young age they are confronted with human frailty, illness, suffering, wounded souls and fragile bodies. Precise actions are part of a strict procedure because the devil is often in the details. In this way they learn that disinfecting is a matter of life and death in a room where it is teeming with sick people. From a kind perspective we follow the youngsters in their practice sessions. A document that talks about us, and our humanity. A simple, humble and curious narrative about people we can describe as heroes.

A long time ago, years before Elon Musk reached for the stars with his Space X project, a young man had his own childhood dream about a journey into space. Fly Rocket Fly tells the fantastic story of German astrophysicist Lutz Kayser who developed the world’s first private space company. He did this under the curious and concerned eyes of secret services around the world. A compelling documentary adventure that reads like a film script. 1975, Lutz Kayser and a dedicated group of engineers have big plans. They are working together on a missile technology based on affordable materials. They set up OTRAG (Orbital Transport and Rockets Inc.), the world’s first private space travel company. But Kayser has a problem: he is not allowed to test his rockets in Europe. His search for a suitable development location leads him to then dictator of Zaire, Mobutu Sese Seko. Mobutu agrees with Kayser’s plans, but the international security services are not on board. After all, since the Second World War no-one wants to see any German rockets being launched. Yet Kayser signs a contract between OTRAG and Zaire in which he can make unlimited use of 100,000 km² of territory to launch and test his rockets. This creates a lot of tension between a troubled outside world and the German rocket scientists. With fascinating archive material, private videos and interviews, director Oliver Schwehm tells this crazy story as a true political thriller full of adventure.

The attacks of 22 March 2016 sent a shock wave through the country. Suddenly, all the spotlights were focused on Molenbeek, a “hell hole” according to the American president. But it’s also the place 6-year-old Aatos and his friends call home. A film about friendship, faith and identity. And above all, a film about what connects us. Finnish-Spanish Aatos is 6 years old and lives in a cité in Molenbeek. Together with his best friend Amine, a Muslim boy, he discovers the world. They listen to the sounds of spiders together, discover what a black hole is and bicker about who can sit where on their flying carpet. Finland meets Morocco, atheism gently rubs against Islam. The gods Aatos and Amine know are numerous, some are real, others are invented. They lead to playful discussions, until a terrorist attack in Brussels and Zaventem disrupts their harmonious world. Armed soldiers now patrol the streets, candles are lit in memory and even in the bedtime stories there are victims. The two boys search for the meaning of it all. They fantasize that they are the last survivors, the strongest. Until an unexpected event changes their lives forever.

A pleasant reunion with the makers of ‘The children of Miss Kiet’, the successful documentary that won many hearts last year. Little Branche, who recently moved to the Netherlands, is desperately trying to find a friend in Miss Kiet’s class. A wonderful, moving portrait of the human craving for friendship and the importance of a loving, warm and safe environment for all children - including refugees. Branche is a six-year-old Macedonian boy who has only just arrived in the Netherlands, where he ends up in the classroom of Miss Kiet. He would love to have a friend in his new surroundings, not an easy task. He meets Syrian Ayham and a friendship grows despite the language barrier. But then Ayham suddenly stops coming to school. The makers do not give explanations or answers, because Branche does not receive any either. This powerful approach scales the theme of refugees and the social discussions back to the story of a child. Tender and emotional. While in The children of Juf Kiet the focus was on the binding power of the inspiring teacher, it is now on the experiences of the children and their search for friendship. A human story about the craving to be accepted and to feel at home in a warm, social environment.

Should every opinion get a platform? Or are there opinions that are so opposed to the prevailing consensus that they have to be banned? Is asking certain questions or expressing other perspectives always innocent? Does it put someone in a certain camp? Or is it dangerous to exclude certain thoughts in the public debate? Has the nuance disappeared in the current discourse? An intriguing documentary that makes you think. When filmmaker Marijn Poels released his controversial documentary The Uncertainty has Settled, he himself experienced the consequences of questioning climate science. He was praised by some, but also condemned, among others by many people who pointed out that certain questions and suggestions are not as innocent as they seem, especially in these times of fake news. As society is increasingly polarized, an open debate is also under pressure in other areas. Certain questions or statements place someone inexorably in a certain camp: left or right, good or bad. Clashing worldviews do not seem to stand side by side anymore; and the debate suffocates when the other person does not simply ‘have a different opinion’, but literally becomes the enemy. How free and liberal is the West? And should we ignore or embrace other perspectives - that are diametrically opposed to our paradigms?

An indomitable woman who, after sixty years of legal battle, is still eager to fight. She fought for women’s rights, overcame discrimination and now at age 85 faces one of her last but toughest fights: Donald Trump. A current report about her personal and professional life. RBG started her career as a groundbreaking lawyer and grew into a silent but tireless force on the US Supreme Court. Her high position had a major impact on fundamental issues, on equality for men and women, abortion, the American constitution, elections ... RBG did not leave a subject unchallenged, just like the documentary. But in addition to her impact on these important themes, the film shows the normally reserved RBG as a warm, humorous woman who is still fit at the age of 84. A surprising portrait of a heroine who refuses to give up her passionate duty. A documentary with a clear message: hope. Quirky, persevering and powerful.

Director Billy Corben made an exciting and hilarious documentary about one of the biggest scandals in the world of American sports. Like no other, award-winning filmmaker Billy Corben (Cocaine Cowboys, The U) knows how to find the most colorful figures for his documentaries. This time he focuses on Anthony Bosch, a key figure in an immense doping scandal involving the legendary New York Yankees. As a self-proclaimed specialist, Bosh convinced elite athletes to become clients, superstars who would later deny any involvement - in vain and despite overwhelming evidence. Too crazy to be true, and that’s why Corben chose a bold but very successful intervention: for the so-called reenactments of events Corben uses children. This very successful procedure speeds everything up and makes the detective story - even for laymen - extremely entertaining.

Farming differently, dealing with nature differently. Many people talk about it, but actually doing so is not easy. John and Molly try to fulfil their dream: operating a real biodiverse farm with respect for animals and nature. No monocultures, but dozens of fruit and vegetable varieties that crisscross the field, a precarious balance between animal, man and nature. Cameraman John Chester and his wife Molly live in a small apartment in Los Angeles. Molly is a culinary reviewer and chef and has been dreaming for years about starting a sustainable farm where she can grow her own products. Their new roommate, the endearing dog Todd, gives them a nudge in the right direction and they decide to turn their dream into reality. With the help of investors, they buy a piece of land outside the city. The arid land is grown according to an ingenious system and with the arrival of pigs, ducks and chickens, their dream slowly comes true. It is not always easy: many things go wrong and they are confronted with unruly natural phenomena. But they also discover that the solution to many setbacks can just be found in the power of nature, for example in the fight against pests. This hopeful documentary, spanning a period of 8 years, is full of breathtaking images of landscapes and animals, including Emma, the pig that will undoubtedly steal your heart.

Peter Jackson (The Lord of the Rings) magically brings a wealth of archival images about WWI to life. Through digital techniques (and a lot of manual work) the film images were colored and we literally see the war as we have never seen it before. A story about deprivation and senseless massacres, but also about the daily life and camaraderie in the trenches. When none other than Peter Jackson makes a documentary about WWI, expectations are high. When the press - despite those sky-high expectations - throws superlatives at it, that says a lot. Peter Jackson has delivered a magisterial film. 600 hours of footage from the BBC archive was carefully picked up and polished: noise and scratches were removed and the speed adjusted. After that, countless images were colored. The result is amazing and is miles away from the familiar jerky black and white images. And yet the power of this documentary does not lie solely in technical ingenuity. Jackson made the conscious choice not to give history lessons: there is no explanatory voice-over and interviews with historians are lacking. He lets the people who fought speak, literally, by giving testimonies from the 60s and by giving the soldiers a voice. He hired forensic lip readers who analyzed the silent film images and found out what was being said. 100 years ago has never before come this close.

Not much later he finds out the shocking explanation behind their behavior. Bobby has a twin brother Eddy, who took classes there a year earlier. An extraordinary coincidence of fate. Their story becomes even more absurd when a third brother, David, is discovered. The media can’t get enough of this exceptional event. But after the joy and surprise, questions arise about their separation, leading to the discovery of a secret study. It turns out that their adoption agency had an agreement with psychiatrist Peter Neubauer to split up twins and triplets for a study within the nature-nurture debate. A grim discovery that takes a gripping look at family, free will and the ethics of science. Three Identical Strangers is one of the “golden three” of 2018: documentaries that have earned over 10 million dollars at the US box office. A justified audience favorite.

The illegal ivory trade and the battle against it divide some regions in Kenya. In a village near a nature reserve, a small ivory trader tries to survive, while rangers use every means possible to prevent poaching. His own cousin is one of them, but he has not been paid for months and has doubts about his commitment. A unique look at the people behind the ivory trade and their motivations. The declining elephant population in Africa has shocked the world. Are we headed for a total ban on ivory trade? The Kenyan government is using troops to stop illegal poachers. But who are these poachers who risk everything - even their lives - to trade ivory anyway? In his debut, director Jon Kosbe followed two men who are in the epicenter of the (fight against) ivory trade during three years. He gained unprecedented access to their lives and is able to offer a rare insight into their perspectives and motivations. We even gain insight into the poachers, who in their eyes are continuing a tradition and who put things in a different perspective by not placing the life of an elephant above that of a human being.

WILL TURA: HOOP DOET LEVEN SCREENING: Sun 31.03 (5PM) in Kinepolis
Will Tura wrote history and has become the Emperor of the Flemish Song. He was the first Belgian artist to fill rock temple Vorst Nationaal in 1974 and his performance at the funeral of King Baudouin is engraved in the collective memory. A look back at his long career is a nostalgic trip through Flanders from the early 60s to the present. 60 years ago Will Tura was on stage for the first time. In the following years, 10,000 performances, dozens of albums and a hundred number one hits would follow. From the very beginning, Tura had a large fan base, but it was not until the last few decades that he gained the respect he deserves throughout the Flemish music world. Director Dominique Deruddere (Crazy Love, Wait until Spring Bandini, Everybody’s Famous) brings Will Tura’s story in his own way: beautiful archive footage is accompanied by the warm voice of Jan Decleir. The story of an honest artist and excellent performer who has worked very hard throughout his life to perfect his profession. And because of his long career, Tura’s story also tells the larger story of Flanders during the last decades, making Hoop doet Leven a varied ‘trip down memory lane’ for every Flemish viewer.

OUTSIDE THE DOX
Outside the Dox is the colorful home of documentaries that dare to deviate from the classic approach. Films that experiment with form or content and thus broaden and enrich the genre. This year, among others, we present a cinematographic gem that knows how to convey a penetrating message without words; a film that is built up like a symphony and a film that is completely made up of found-footage material. Intriguing, uplifting, disturbing and fascinating.
AQUARELA SCREENING: Wed 03.04 (8PM) in Kinepolis
Award-winning director Viktor Kossakovsky films the primal power of water in a incredible way as a natural element that seems to take revenge on mankind as we are slowly but surely destroying the earth. Immense ice caps crumble and turn into tumbling waterfalls and devastating waves. A visually stunning prayer for forgiveness. “How the hell did they film that? It is a question that pops up regularly when looking at the impressive images of Aquarela. Russian director Kossakovsky used the latest high-tech stabilization equipment and filmed with waterproof HD cameras at 96 frames per second, resulting in an overwhelming cinematography. Water is the protagonist in Aquarela, but not so much in its gentle, life-giving form. Kossakovsky shows the raw energy of this force of nature, in all its glory and immeasurable power making people seem very fragile in comparison. When immense chunks of ice break off and float away, the wonder of this majestic element of nature gradually turns into a disturbing feeling. The melting icebergs leave behind a trace of devastation and tragic events; from Lake Baikal in Siberia, through gigantic waterfalls of Venezuela to tornado-infested California.

A contemplative journey through our obsessive consumer society. A beautiful documentary symphony about the lifeline of everyday objects from the mining of the raw materials to the final waste processing, supported by a beautiful cinematography and an impressive soundscape. We are surrounded by countless things that we have collected throughout our lives. All those items have been made, tested, transported and will eventually be destroyed. A perpetual consumption chain from raw material to waste. Built up as a symphony in four parts, Beautiful Things shows four men in an exceptional working environment that is part of this consumption chain. Everything starts with the extraction of crude oil in a desert, the basic raw material of many consumer goods. The story continues on an immense cargo ship. After the vastness of the desert and the ocean, an acoustic scientist takes us to his echo-free test room to end the journey in a hellish waste processing company. As with a symphony, the four parts are linked to each other, in a magnificent whole in which both the soundscape and the image fit together perfectly.

Self-development. Inner growth. It seems likewww.mintfilm.nl the holy grail of our time. The contemporary search for meaning and personal growth is widespread, the offered solutions vary. A cinematic - often hilarious - observation of this search, along with a registration of workshops and training courses that want to answer ubiquitous questions. A presentation about happiness for primary school students, a course ‘dealing with tension and aggression’ and a vlogger who tries to calm down stressed followers with soft, relaxing sounds. But also quite a few therapy sessions with animals, such as a pig massages or leadership training with horses. Fatherhood courses. Mindfulness for children. The camera registers, but keeps its distance, just outside of the group. As a clinical observation of our human quest, this varied documentary lets the viewer make up his own mind about what all this means. Now Something is Slowly Changing won the prize for best Dutch documentary at the prestigious documentary festival IDFA

Morgellons disease. According to Wikipedia it is a non-existent skin condition: believing you have the disease is actually a psychotic disorder. According to the YouTube community of the ‘morgies’, however, it is very much a real disease that they passionately document. A strange found-footage portrait of the believers and their daily, hardcore fight against the disease, real or psychotic. Three years ago filmmaker Penny Lane was a guest at DOCVILLE with the hilarious, inventive documentary Nuts! She played, as it were, a game with viewers who like to believe crazy stories. In The Pain of Others, she takes a completely different approach. It is still a wild story that explores the boundaries of ‘truth’, but this time there is a focus on the tragedy of those who believe in a world of non-believers. Lane only uses the self-made footage of three women who document their controversial disease. With empathy she gathers their testimonies, which are a heart-rending cry for help: a sincere exclamation that their suffering is real, that they are not just imagining this. Their evidence: hours upon hours of footage of their bizarre symptoms. An alienating, creepy experience that evokes empathy and makes you weary at the same time. An interesting look at the online communities in which everyone sees their own truth proven.

PRESS UNDER PRESSURE
Carrying out detective work against the clock, journalists risking their lives, secret information that can change the world: it sounds like fiction, but it really exists. DOCVILLE selected four high-profile documentaries on (investigative) journalism. Critical minds from around the world who, each in their own way, dig up secrets and fight for freedom of expression. But the opposite is happening too: there is a part of the media that subordinates the truth to their own agenda and deliberately sends out fake news.
DIVIDE AND CONQUER SCREENING: Thu 28.03 (1.30PM) in ZED-Vesalius, Mon 01.04 (10PM) in ZED-STUK, Thu 04.04 (7.30PM) in Kinepolis
It is no coincidence that the right-wing conservative Fox News has become a breeding ground for fake news and is one of the causes of the rise of new, highly conservative movements. On the contrary, it has all happened by design. It fits in the vision of Roger Ailes, who has been the head of Fox News for twenty years. Ailes’ predilection for sensational news and polarization perfectly match his own turbulent career. A staggering look at (the lack of) moral limits in the media. For several decades, Roger Ailes was active as CEO of Fox News and Fox Television Stations. Like no other, he could give news a sensational twist to appeal to the taste for drama in his audience - a tactic he also applied as a media consultant for Nixon, Reagan, Bush Sr. and Trump, among others. In Divide and Conquer, witnesses describe how he made his own persona as impressive as that of his clients. His cunning approach made him incredibly influential in the media world, he was known as ‘the most powerful man in the media’. But it is clear that he also offended many people and crossed many lines: he was accused, among other things, of racism and sexual harassment. On the basis of Ailes’ life, the documentary takes a critical look at themes such as sexism, manipulation and especially the moral limits of different media.

The story of the biggest scam ever has all the ingredients of an exciting film scenario. A top financier obscures 3.5 billion dollars from ‘1MDB’, a Malaysian fund that is entirely in the hands of the Minister of Finance. Investigative journalists from The New York Times, Wall Street Journal and Hollywood Reporter take an interest in the investigation and trace the money trail that - ironically - leads to the funding of the blockbuster The Wolf of Wall Street. The world’s largest scam is a story about corruption at the highest level, abuse of power and international money laundering. A hot shot financier obscures 3.5 billion US dollars from a Malaysian fund. The money from this bold scam follows a lot of winding roads and flows to New York and Hollywood. The thieves visit several A-list celebrities and ultimately finance Leonardo DiCarpio’s passion project The Wolf of Wall Street. Investigative journalists from The New York Times, Wall Street Journal and Hollywood Reporter follow the money trail like true detectives and unravel the cunning intrigues. The US Department of Justice is involved, just like the Malaysian Prime Minister and his entourage. Assets are frozen and money is seized while the duped Malaysian population fights back. An impressive account of crime and corruption and how much a few driven journalists can dig up.

In the spring of 2016, the media exploded thanks to the publication of the Panama Papers, which exposed the fraud and tax evasion of prominent figures around the world. The Panama Papers explains in an intriguing way what the documents contain and how journalists around the world secretly worked on their publication for a year. In 2015, an anonymous source shares more than eleven million documents with a German newspaper. A year later, on April 3, 2016, the International Consortium of Investigative Journalists publishes the Panama Papers, the largest data breach in history. Drug barons, politicians, top athletes and other celebrities from around the world are linked to tens of thousands of offshores - foreign bank accounts that are often used for illegal financial activities. One month later, 200 countries publish lists of names of all citizens involved. The Panama Papers portrays the journalists involved in the investigation of the Panama Papers, who are forced to keep their work secret during 2015 - which is emphasized at the time that Maltese journalist Caruana Galizia is murdered during the recording of the film. An extremely exciting documentary that guides the viewer deeper and deeper into the maze of the fraud scandal.

Months later, his boat was found at sea – without Bas Jan. Filmmaker Martijn Blekendaal finds out what happened. A maximum security prison in the US. On the one hand there is the prisoners, on the other hand non-prisoners. There are differences and similarities, lives come together and separate, release is sometimes just as shocking as detention. A fascinating visit inside the prison that will change your view of the prison system forever.

The Eiffel Tower, the Taj Mahal, Venice, the Vatican ... These are just a few of the many monuments or even entire cities of which replicas have been made. These constructions are more than simple copies, they reflect a certain world view: places shaped according to what we consider ideal. A sometimes absurd journey through the monumental copycat architecture of China, amongst other places.

INVESTIGATIVE JOURNALISM AND FAKE NEWS While the press used to have an unquestionable aura of authority, in these times of fake news it finds itself increasingly under attack. The press continues to drop bombshells: from Watergate to The Panama Papers, investigative journalism does have an impact on society. Should the press be the watchdog of our democracy? Is there a remedy for fake news? Can thorough investigative journalism survive in these times of super-fast social media?

IS POLARISATION A PROBLEM? “Polarisation”. It is a term you hear every day. Regardless of which theme is being discussed, extreme opinions become stronger and reinforce each other. Not only in the media, but also in discussions between friends and acquaintances, it is increasingly difficult to take a nuanced position, to ask critical questions or to vent dissenting opinions without being placed in the hostile camp. How do we explain this phenomenon of polarisation? Which consequences does it have? And what are the risks? How do we reintroduce nuance and honest critical thinking into the debate?

SATURDAY 30.03 | 10AM When Arabs Danced | 13h Lecture Khalid Benhaddou
ISLAM IN CONTEMPORARY WESTERN SOCIETY In When Arabs Danced, director Jawad Rhalib asks questions about the effects of Muslim fundamentalism, basing himself on the story of his mother, who was a belly dancer. Not so long ago this Arab dance stood for sensuality and femininity, now Muslims often label it as unclean. How do artists look at it today? And more broadly: how do Muslims combine their faith with the contemporary European context? Imam Khalid Benhaddou, author of “Halal or not?”, elaborates on this. He has been trying for years to build a bridge between his faith and the contemporary European society in which he lives.

DISCUSSIONS AND DEBATES
SATURDAY 30.03 | 15h Palimpsest | 17h Debate with Peter Verlinden
A NEW LOOK AT THE COLONIAL PAST? The renovation of the Africa Museum in Tervuren is the ideal occasion for director Matthias De Groof to study our view on the Belgian colonial past. Does the facelift of the museum imply that this past must be (re) interpreted? Did the museum demolish not only old walls but also the old colonial vision in its new design? And have they succeeded in making the voice of the African diaspora heard? VRT journalist and Congo expert Peter Verlinden offers his expertise.

FLAT EARTH: NOT A CRAZY THOUGHT Worldwide, more and more people are claiming that the earth is flat. Where does this belief come from? Are their arguments too crazy for words? Or is there something to what they say? Isn’t a critical mind one that dares to question common theories? Should we just shrug? Or convince these people with scientific arguments?

INCLUSIVE EDUCATION: CURSE OR BLESSING? Since the introduction of the M-decree, which really started in 2016, so-called “inclusive education” has often been the subject of discussion. What some consider a step in the right direction children and young people should be able to deal with differences - others see as a risk to the quality level of our education. Canvas - the ultimate documentary channel - has been a valuable partner of DOCVILLE for years and traditionally presents its own program at the festival. An exclusive preview of new series that are in the pipeline? This year we spoil you with the first episode of the 7-part biopic about Frank Vandenbroucke and the first footage of a very very quirky series called Fiskepark. A mockumentary with, among others, Tomas De Soete, Jan Jaap van der Wal, Bent Van Looy and Siska Schoeters that is a parody of the true-crime genre, questioning its authenticity in a humorous way.
Authors’ association SABAM supports audiovisual authors in various ways. They have an eye for young emerging talent, but also for filmmakers who have already proved themselves. No less than three documentaries will be screened on the Sabam evening and this year women rule the roost! On this fascinating evening in the presence of the directors we present the screening of Memre Yu by Wildcard winner Zaïde Bil, Fraternidad by Laura Zuallaert and Still from Afar by Eva Van Tongeren.

MASTERCLASS ANDRE SINGER
Macky is a new collective of Flemish creatives with a heart for children’s content. During the industry pitches at DOCVILLE, makers have the chance to explain their latest ideas for children and youth content to TV channels, production houses and distributors. Telidja Klaï (Ketnet) will kick off this day, which ends with an inspiring screening of successful children’s documentaries from neighboring countries. LANGUAGE: DUTCH

BEYOND BORDERS: DIRECTORS ROUNDTABLE Professional documentary makers from the Netherlands and Flanders meet up for an interesting conversation. Is there a difference in the way we make documentaries? But also: how far do we want to go as directors? Would we be willing to be our own producers? How do creation and financing relate to each other? A roundtable discussion across the border. Andre Singer is a monument in the world of documentaries. After his doctorate in anthropology, he started making non-fiction in the 1970s. SCENARIO IN DOCUMENTARY: CASE STUDY SCREWBALL Just like with a fiction film, a scenario is indispensable for a documentary. But how exactly does that work? Doesn’t a documentary want to avoid manipulating reality? Of the many possible formats, re-enactments the re-enactment of events with actors - are often the subject of discussion. It is an intervention that offers opportunities as well as pitfalls. Director Billy Corben shares how he used actors in the hilarious ‘Screwball’ in a very creative way. LANGUAGE: ENGLISH

DAY OF THE DOC Professional documentary makers traditionally meet on the last day of DOCVILLE for the annual Day of the Doc. In the morning a round-up will be made of the state of affairs of Flemish documentary film, followed by a session on the social impact of documentaries. In the afternoon, we will discuss various themes and specific topics. LANGUAGE: DUTCH
DOCVILLE and Hello crowd! are teaming up to present the very first edition of the Hello crowd! crowdfunding competition at DOCVILLE. ABOUT LEUVEN Leuven is a relatively small city (100.000 inhabitants), twenty kilometers near Brussels. Leuven is widely known for two things: students and beer. It harbours one of the largest and oldest universities in Europe. The KU Leuven was founded in 1425 and has more than 55.000 students today. Leuven is also the hometown of InBev, the largest brewery in the world, famous for its beer Stella Artois (since 1366), one of the best known (and may we add: best tasting) beers.
GETTING AROUND IN LEUVEN BY BUS
In Leuven the buses of the public transport company De Lijn will swiftly take you anywhere in the city. - Cinema ZED- Vesalius: stop Leuven Campus Vesalius - lines 1, 4, 5, 6 - STUK: stop Leuven H.Hart Kliniek - line 2 - Kinepolis: stop station Leuven - 30CC/Wagehuys Stop Sint-Pieterskliniek BY BIKE
Leuven itself was founded in the 11th century and has a fabulous historic city centre (with the magnificent town hall) and a worldwide known Beguinage (officially recognized as an UNESCO World Heritage site). Due to the creative input of students, it always stayed a vivid, young and creative environment. In a city where the historical buildings are only surpassed by the number of pubs and bars (following our last count: 180, but it’s possible we’ve missed some) there is always something going on. Leuven harbours a series of interesting cultural organisations and events. Besides DOCVILLE there’s also the International Arts Centre STUK (www.stuk.be), the M-Museum, the local cultural center 30CC (www.30CC.be), The Afrika Film Festival (www.afrikafilmfestival.be), the club concerts of Het Depot (www.depot.be), the Leuven Short Film Festival (www.shortfilmfestival.org) and so on.
Bikes rule the streets of Leuven, it’s the best way to get around the city center. You can rent bikes at the Bike center at the Leuven railway station or in the center at Leuven Leisure. BY FOOT
Leuven has a small citycenter, which means that everything is easily accessible by foot. - Cinema ZED- Vesalius: 12 minutes from the station. - STUK: 20 minutes from the station. - Kinepolis: 4 minutes from the station. - 30CC/Wagehuys:17 minutes from the station.
MORE INFORMATION You can find more detailed information about Leuven on the official website of the city (www.leuven.be) or at the Tourist Information Bureau (Naamsestraat 1, 3000 Leuven). 115

“You say blues, you gotta say BB.” Blues legend B.B. King was always on the road, for over 65 years with hardly a break, giving about 18,000 performances. On the Road offers the viewer a chance to join him on this adventure, a journey along the days and nights along the way, from the very beginning of his tour days up to the great milestones of his unrivaled career.
For almost 40 years General Franco ruled Spain with an iron fist. A bloody past that many Spaniards prefer not to discuss. However, several surviving relatives want to break this silence. A disconcerting documentary about a period that still divides the country - after decades of democracy.

An increasing workload, operating rooms that are overmanned and surgeons who increasingly need to run production.
