Two old characters share their past and present. A poetic look at the lives of two very different brothers and the surprises that are still in store. Two elderly brothers approach, with halting steps. Their thin bright white hair looks like a halo around their heads in the backlight. They live together in the family home in a sparsely populated area in Poland. They may look fragile, but are still full of vigor and humor. They once escaped from a Stalinist labor camp, but they cannot escape each other, despite their major differences. Alfons is an artist and a dreamer, Mieczyslaw a pragmatic scientist who worked as a cartographer. They are like cat and dog, but throughout their lives, they managed to differ and overcome conflicts. Filmmaker Wojciech Staron, previously primarily known as an internationally famous cameraman, visited the brothers regularly - often without a camera - and won their trust. The intimacy of old age is beautifully captured in honest images, while their past is dealt with in professionally processed 8mm movies. We get an impression of their time in Siberia and their lives in the former USSR. But life is not over yet. Even in their eighties, they still have dreams and desires. For painter Alfons an ultimate dream comes true, followed by a severe setback. It seems like fate created an unintended allegory, a lesson that life is an accumulation of building up and letting go, meeting and saying goodbye, falling and rising again. This film will be preceded by the short documentary Dear Araucaria. More info p. 19.

EUROPE, SHE LOVES
PREMIERE
SCREENING: Sat April 30th (22:15) and Thu May 5th (14:00) in STUK (Soetezaal)
What do today's twentysomethings think about Europe, and how do they feel? At a time when the unity of Europe seems further and further away, young director Jan Gassman makes an intimate portrait of four young couples in Europe. Siobhan and Terry try to live a drug-free life in Dublin. In Tallinn young mother Veronika wishes that Harri would get along better with her son. Penny is considering leaving her older boyfriend, leaving Thessaloniki and moving to Italy. And in Sevilla, new couple Juan and Caro are fully enjoying a life of love and passion, without thinking of the future. Just like in a mosaic film, the stories of these four couples are woven together, creating a beautiful intimate time document about twentysomethings today. They share the same concerns and aspirations, and their relationships are often an escape from the social and economic dip their country is experiencing. But there is also joy and partying and sex. It's amazing how close director Gassman gets to the couples. They have no qualms about the camera observing their dreams, weaknesses and intimate moments. In several episodes he is able to capture the essence of their personal attitude in pictures. An intimate glimpse into the heart and soul of young people.

LIFE, ANIMATED
EUROPEAN PREMIERE
SCREENING: Sat April 30th (22:00) and Wed May 4th (18:15) in STUK (Labozaal)
Everyone thought autistic Owen Suskind would never talk. He is already a big toddler when he suddenly begins to speak in complete sentences. He does not just repeat phrases: they are quotes from Disney films. A heartwarming story and a deserved Sundance winner. At the age of three energetic chatterbox Owen suddenly stops talking. Autism makes him slip into a dark, closed world. There seems to be no way back. Over the next four years, Owen only responds to one thing: Disney films. One day, his father picks up a Iago doll, the parrot from Aladdin, and starts speaking to Owen as if he were that character. Suddenly, Owen replies with a phrase from the movie. This is a turning point for Owen and his family. Owen learns how to express himself using dialogues from the dozens of Disney films he knows by heart. The rest of the family takes turns playing the roles of Disney characters. The animation films open up a channel of communication that had long been considered as permanently closed. Owen and the world around him learn to understand each other. With an extensive arsenal of stories and dialogues Owen gets ready to face the challenges that life has in store for him. This coming-of-age story is beautifully put together, with a mix of scenes from Disney movies and animated events in the life of Owen. The film raises questions about the 'how' and 'why' of Owen's identification with cartoon characters, but above all it is a plea for love and understanding from one’s environment.

LO AND BEHOLD: REVERIES OF THE CONNECTED WORLD
PREMIERE
SCREENING: Mon May 2nd (20:00) and Fri May 6th (17:30) in Kinepolis
We are completely dependent on it, but we no longer realize how exceptional the Internet is. Documentary filmmaker Werner Herzog calls it "one of the greatest revolutions that we have experienced as human beings". It also has its downsides, such as Internet addiction and cyber bullying. We all use it every day and depend on it, without really realizing it. But we rarely take a step back to look at the endless connections and the somewhat eerie omnipotence of the Internet. German filmmaker Werner Herzog explores our ever-expanding Internet connectivity. In this documentary, Herzog talks to many different people ranging from pioneers of the technology world - like Elon Musk, Bob Kahn and Sebastian Thrun - to victims of radiation from wireless networks or cyberbullying. This combination creates a very complex and contrasting portrait of our modern connected society. It shows how important and necessary technological progress is, but Lo and Behold also reveals its heavy toll.

After 23 years on death row, a man does not request a stay of execution but just the opposite. A psychological thriller-documentary with an amazing and very exciting story as well as a fascinating character study. Convicted for the murder of a young woman, charismatic Nick has already spent 23 years on death row. He recently filed an application to finally carry out his death sentence. On camera he shares his extraordinary story, which is nothing like what you would expect.. His story has incredible plot twists, and the final shocking twist puts everything in a different light. A documentary that keeps you on the edge of your seat thanks to its masterful storytelling. That is partly the merit of director David Sington who keeps a perfect pace and gives Nick the space he needs. The strongest element? Nick’s incredible storytelling skills. He has already spent so much time within the limited world of the prison that he does not need much more than his voice and expression to paint a whole colorful world and take you into his extraordinary life story. His story is occasionally supplemented by clever shots of the things Nick so passionately talks about. The question is whether we can really see through this gifted storyteller.

Choi quickly resurfaced in North Korea, but it takes years before Shin gives a sign of life. THE SWEDISH THEORY OF LOVE
PREMIERE
SCREENING: Mon May 2nd (20:00), Thu May 5th (17:30) and Sat May 7th (22:00) in STUK (Labozaal)
A society in which everyone has the freedom to be totally independent and safely live their life exactly as he/she wants. Perfect, right? Then why are Swedes not happy? In the eyes of many, Sweden is a perfectly organized society. Since the '70s everything is aimed at ensuring that everyone has equal opportunities to live an independent existence. Care and support are all arranged, from the cradle to the grave. No one is dependent on anyone else and so everyone is free to organize their life as he/she wants. Women can choose to be single mothers and use a sperm bank, and the sick and the elderly can turn to the appropriate authorities. But when people no longer need each other, social contact is no longer a necessity. And that has major consequences. Half the population lives alone and the number of lonely, unnoticed deaths is increasing. Some people look for a way out: young hippies organize meetings to 'really see and touch' each other again. A doctor chooses to live in Ethiopia, where the warm community spirit more than makes up for the poor living conditions. Director Gandini knows better than anyone how to look behind the façade of our 'perfect' Western world. In 2010 his film Videocracy was shown at DOCVILLE, a chilling essay on the bling-bling world of the Italian media. Now he shows the many faces of a society for whom the pursuit of individual independence is the greatest good. Sometimes funny, often deeply sad, and food for thought. This film will be preceded by the short documentary A Strong Beat. More info p. 18.

UKRAINIAN SHERIFFS
PREMIERE
SCREENING: Sat April 30th (18:45) and Wed May 4th (22:00) in STUK (Cinema ZED)
Two local men - one strong and the other smart - play sheriff in a small village in southern Ukraine. They could have walked straight out of a Coen brothers film. A funny and ultimately enlightening film about a small world and a major conflict. In a small village in southern Ukraine two men drive around in a bright yellow, decrepit Lada. They have been appointed by the mayor as 'sheriffs' because the nearest real police station is too far away. In this region where everything exudes a bygone Soviet atmosphere, they drive from incident to incident; the theft of some ducks, broken down cars, angry neighbors, the local drunkard who eats his neighbor’s dogs, and even the discovery of a corpse. With an eye for the fabulous absurdity of certain situations director Bondachuk captures the striking sheriff duo. Volodya is the youngest of the two, a former bouncer who looks tough, but is actually quite gentle and accommodating. His companion is a typical retired policeman - including the obligatory mustache and dark sunglasses - who is much quicker to lose his temper. Their everyday routine continues, even when the development of the Ukrainian-Russian conflict reaches the village through TV footage. Even though they live far from the front line, the residents slowly but surely become involved in the contradictions of the war. What starts out as a savory, tragicomic portrait of a duo in a world of colorful characters, gradually offers an insightful look at the broad spectrum of the consequences of national conflicts. Gentle and bitter at the same time. Ukrainian Sheriffs won the Special Jury Award at the International Documentary Festival of Amsterdam.

WELCOME TO LEITH
PREMIERE
SCREENING: Tue May 3rd (22:00) and Sat May 7th (17:30) in STUK (Cinema ZED)
What do you do when neo-Nazis try to take over your town? This question became a sinister reality for the inhabitants of the small village of Leith. A fascinating film about the boundaries of free speech and democracy, which is all the rage at international film festivals. Deep in beautiful North Dakota lies the small hamlet of Leith, where the 24 inhabitants all get along. One day the village gets a new resident, notorious neo-Nazi Craig Cobb. He has a dubious plan: he buys land in the small village, wants to take over the administration and transform Leith into a community exclusively for white supremacists. But the locals are not pleased with his schemes and his extremely racist ideology. Leading the protest against Cobb are mayor Ryan Schock, who runs a small ranch with his wife, alderman Lee Cook, who moved to the serene village after the murder of his daughter in Washington and Bobby Harper, the only African-American of the village. The residents have one big problem: nothing Craig Cobb is doing is illegal. Legally, he is within his rights to buy land and live where he wants. And thanks to the United States’ 'First Amendment' he is free to put up Nazi flags and express his racist ideas. The atmosphere in the village becomes grimmer by the day and the locals are increasingly desperate to stop Cobb. The filmmakers show both parties and register the confrontations between Cobb and the villagers. The tension on how this impasse can be resolved is becoming more cutting. A poignant story that poses uncomfortable questions about the (boundaries of) freedom of speech and democracy. Who determines who is welcome in Leith? This film will be preceded by the short documentary A Conversation with my Black Son. More info p. 17. 16

A LEAK IN PARADISE SCREENING: Thu May 5th (15:00) in STUK (Labozaal)
In 2008, Swiss banker Rudolf Elmer leaks - for the first time - sensitive information about the seedy secrets of a Swiss bank in the Cayman Islands. A noble act with far-reaching consequences for him and his family. For many years, Liege journalist David Leloup followed the eventful life of Rudolf Elmer, a Swiss banker who could no longer stand to watch the malpractices of his own company and decided to make them public. When he first leaked information to the then unknown WikiLeaks in 2008, he had no idea what the consequences would be. He loses his job, has to deal with threats and intimidation and faces a series of court proceedings. He spends a long time in preventive detention, without any evidence, simply because he cooperated with WikiLeaks. The documents he leaked do contain incredible amounts of information on the shady practices in the international banking world. A Leak in Paradise offers a revealing and alarming insight into the unknown world of offshore banking and international tax evasion.

BOBBEJAAN SCREENING: Tue May 3rd (19:30) in Het Depot
Bobbejaan has created an impressive career composing songs, singing and acting. He even built the successful theme park Bobbejaanland. In his old age, however, he asks himself whether he always made the right choices. This intimate and emotional portrait was filmed by his son and shows Bobbejaan in the last stages of his life. What does it do to a human being when you, as he said himself, "have a lot of history, but little future"? Belgian entertainer and entrepreneur Bobbejaan Schoepen lives in a villa in the Kempen, where he can hear the people visiting his theme park screaming in the background. But he is old and sick, and slowly but surely the once active Bobbejaan is fading away. The documentary shows how his wife touchingly continues to care for him and his son who wants to capture it all on camera. The result is a documentary full of loving intimacy. The alternation between the archival footage and his son’s amateur camera footage turns Bobbejaan into a moving portrait of a man full of entrepreneurial talent and creativity but also with a broken dream. His son Tom remains hopeful that his father will be rediscovered, both here and in the United States and with a documentary like this one, it could certainly happen.

LES LIBERTERRES SCREENING: Sun May 1st (17:30) in STUK (Cinema ZED)
They are rebellious, passionate and visionary. Andre, Giuseppe, Olga and Remi are farmers with a radically different vision of their craft. Are they fighting a losing battle or is there hope for a green revolution? As prices plummet, farmers can no longer survive on the proceeds of their craft, and yet 1 billion people are undernourished. The farming industry is no longer economically viable, it harms the environment and it fails to produce enough food, but little seems to change. Les Liberterres presents four farmers who believe that there is a different way. They are from Belgium, Italy, Austria and Africa, but what they have in common is their desire for autonomy. They are not dependent on suppliers, and they do not dance to the tune of the market as they are not dependent on subsidies. They are close to nature but also to their customers: they sell their products in short chain. They experiment plenty with new unconventional farming practices. All four men firmly believe that their way of growing food will offer food security to a world population of 9 billion by 2050. A bold statement that is checked against the analyses of renowned experts. A naive romantic ideal or the beginning of a green revolution?

Two young African refugees arrive in Lampedusa where the locals help them out. But having a future is about more than having a roof over your head. With sharp observations Tim De Keersmaecker shows the subtle nuances in the heated discourse on the assistance of refugees. Omar is a 21-year-old refugee from Tunisia. Like many other refugees, he left his homeland in a rickety boat and stranded on the coast of Lampedusa. Omar is lucky enough to meet Doctor Bartolo, a local doctor who gives first aid to stranded refugees. He gives Omar a family, a home, and even a job as an interpreter at the shelter. During the same period, 16-year-old Adam from Ghana also reaches the island. He receives help from a hotel owner and works at the hotel as an assistant. He receives basic education but it is unclear how freely Adam can shape his own future. Because of his long workdays at the hotel, he barely spends any time with peers. His only social contact consists of a phone call home. Every day that passes takes them further away from the life that lies behind them, and that they never want to return to. They know that they want to go beyond this island, but will they find the strength to start again somewhere else? No Man is an Island crystallizes the efforts of support and integration through two unique adoption stories. The quest for happiness of both the island residents and the newcomers creates nuances in the current discourse on the welcoming of refugees, in an in-depth manner.

ORATORIUM ZONDER DOEL SCREENING: Mon May 2nd (19:30) in STUK (Soetezaal)
In the name of progress, the village of Doel was sacrificed in 1965 for the expansion of the port of Antwerp. Half a century later, the town is still there. A ghost town after fifty years of port policy on the left bank of the river Schelde. "Doel must go, because the port is expanding", that was the message in 1965. In the name of progress a part of the polder land had to disappear. Families who had lived and farmed the same land for generations had to relocate. Half a century later, Doel is still there. A 'battered' ghost village after 50 years of controversial port policies on the left bank of the river Schelde. Docks that are rarely full, and yet the newest one will cut right through Doel. It is the final blow. How did it come to this? And is it really called for? Because the problem of Doel is the problem of Antwerp. What is the added value of a giant dock with even more containers on the already crowded Antwerp ring road? Isn't there another way? Documentary filmmaker Manu Riche spoke with polder farmers, activists of Doel 2020, highly placed officials within the port authority, policy makers, opinion leaders and representatives for multinationals. It is a discussion that has been dragging on for 50 years, and the end is nowhere in sight.

REACH FOR THE SKY SCREENING: Wed May 4th (15:00) and Thu May 5th (19:30) in STUK (Cinema ZED)
Every year in early November, South Korea is fully focused on the Suneung, a final exam for students. The score not only determines which university the student can attend. In a country obsessed with performance, it is also a status symbol. In the harsh, competitive society of South Korea, every student has one chance a year to secure his or her future. During the national exam, the Suneung test, you determine your chance to be admitted to the most prestigious universities in the country. Only those students with the best results are allowed to continue, everyone else has to settle for a less coveted university and will not climb further up the social ladder. Given that everything depends on that single test, the pressure to succeed is immense. In the margins of the test, a whole industry has popped up: refresher courses, training schedules and even magic and divination. Reach for the Sky follows three students who have been preparing non-stop for months for the allimportant test. Their dedication and sacrifice is unparalleled. Their school activities consist solely of hours of additional training at hagwon, a kind of private education. These young people are no longer allowed to be kids: there is simply no room for (non-competitive) sports, relaxation or - God help us - just doing nothing. They are being prepared to pursue perfection, just like their parents.

SAMUEL IN THE CLOUDS SCREENING: Sat April 30th (20:30) in STUK (Cinema ZED)
High in the Andes Samuel remains hopeful that the snow will return, even though climate change has caused the glacier to vanish for good. A compelling example of the global refusal to face and address the facts of climate change, filmed in a unique location. When Samuel saw a picture of a skier on a snowy mountainside as a child he knew what he wanted to do when he was older. He made his dream come true, learned how to ski and found a job working on the old ski lift on the glacier on Chacaltaya in Bolivia, one of the highest ski slopes in the world. For generations people have lived and worked in the snowy peaks. But now the snow has disappeared and an ancient glacier is about to vanish. From his window Samuel looks out on the roof of the world and sees the climate change before his eyes. While scientists are working to measure everything objectively, Samuel continues to hope that the glacier will come back one day. Research shows the opposite is true, and experts predict that within 10 to 20 years the inhabitants of the Andes will have to deal with a severe water shortage due to the disappearance of the glaciers. Director Pieter Van Eecke’s beautiful images not only document the reality of the disappearing glacier. Samuels desperate refusal to recognize climate change as a definite fact is an allegory for all of humanity. Despite all the facts, we hold on to our old habits.

SCOUTS SCREENING: Wed May 4th (19:30) in STUK (Cinema ZED)
The cheerful chaos of teenage life is never as obvious as it is during the annual scout camp. A touching, recognizable portrait about the essence of adolescence. Back home they are simply Maureen, Damien, Camille and François. But once they are at camp, they roll up their sleeves and become Castellan, Chickaree, Shiba and Akita. Isolated from the outside world, and out from under the watchful eyes of their parents, the scout camp becomes a unique universe. For two weeks, they will bathe in the river, they can not use their beloved smartphones and they have to get by on their own. Boys and girls spy on each other, crushes flourish, friendships are forged for life. A dropping forces these teens to take a stand, to be creative and to be leaders. When a girl receives her totem, it is preceded by a complex ritual of introspection. Scouts makes you smile and makes you dream of the time when life’s little issues seemed so vital. THE INVISIBLE CITY [KAKUMA] SCREENING: Sun May 1st (19:00) in STUK (Soetezaal)
Is it possible to build a house in a place called 'nowhere'? Director Lieven Corthouts spent more than 4 years in an African refugee camp by that name and discovered that 'nowhere' is also 'invisible' to the outside world. Kenya's Kakuma camp (the name translates as 'Nowhere') has been around for 20 years and has grown into a kind of city with over 100,000 inhabitants, including many children without parents. Belgian director Lieven Corthouts, who has previously shot other fascinating documentaries in Ethiopia, lived there for several years, built friendships and shared the daily reality of the residents. When he wasn’t filming, he taught and worked in a store. His long stay gave him an unprecedented opportunity to portray the lives of four young refugees in the camp. Claude and Nyakong have just arrived in the camp, while Khadijo and Nyamuch have lived there all their lives. Corthouts shows what the children are capable of and exposes the dynamics of the camp. The children seize every opportunity to build a new life and a future in the camp. But is that even possible? Can Kakuma offer them a new future or is it just a waiting room where your best option is a dangerous trip to Europe?

THE LAND OF THE ENLIGHTENED SCREENING: Fri May 6th (18:30) in STUK (Labozaal)
Fiction and documentary merge seamlessly in this immersive, beautifully photographed film that portrays the primitive beauty and roughness of life - or is it survival? - in Afghanistan in an unique way. A group of Afghan children dig up old Soviet mines and sell explosives to other kids who work in the mines, looking for the precious stone lapis lazuli while day dreaming aloud about the day when the US military will finally withdraw from their country. Meanwhile, another child gang keeps a close eye on the convoys that smuggle the blue gems across the arid Pamir Mountains. The evocative images that director Pieter-Jan De Pue captured on 16mm film, over a period of seven years, present a strange but fascinating look at the state in which Afghanistan is left for the next generation. As US troops prepare to leave, we follow De Pue as he discovers this hidden land in which young boys form outlaw gangs who control trade routes, sell the explosives from landmines and and use rusty tanks as their playground. They follow their own rules of war, modeled on the desolate landscape that they have inherited.

TRUTH OR CONSEQUENCES
WORLD PREMIERE
SCREENING:Wed May 4th (19:30) in STUK (Soetezaal)
An imploring, poetic and captivating portrait of a tiny little town in the desert of New Mexico that changed its name for a radio show. A story about 15 minutes of fame, 64 years later, but also about the elusive mystique and charm of everyday American life. Near the end of 1949 the popular American radio show Truth or Consequences launched a remarkable question: the city that renamed itself after the popular quiz would be given the honor to host the tenth anniversary broadcast. A number of cities put themselves forward, but in the end the honors went to Hot Springs, New Mexico. A place that best suited the philosophy of the program, which was 'a real friendliness for people and a desire to help mankind'. For a little while Truth or Consequences, the radio show and the small town in the desert with the same brand new name, made national news. Long after the media storm had passed, the presenter of the program would visit the small town every year, as its name was shortened to 'T or C'. More than half a century later, the radio show has long been long shut down, but the name change is commemorated every year during the Fiesta celebration with a parade, a rodeo, a Miss Fiesta election and other American panache. The film paints a mesmerizing, poetic and endearing portrait of the desert town Truth or Consequences and exposes a piece of Americas soul. This film will be preceded by the short documentary Who Stole the Ruby Slippers. More info p. 35.

WIM
WORLD PREMIERE
SCREENING: Tue May 3rd (20:00) in STUK (Soetezaal)
In WIM, documentary filmmaker Lut Vandekeybus takes us into the energetic, poetic and complex universe of her brother, acclaimed choreographer and director Wim Vandekeybus. An enthusiastic portrait of a distinguished career. Wim Vandekeybus’ career began with Jan Fabre, but he soon founded his own company, Ultima Vez. His first show What the Body Does Not Remember (1987) became an international success and won awards for its groundbreaking dance language. It was the launch of a career that put both the company and Flemish dance on the map, internationally. In the early 90s he begins to use film scenes in his performances. And successfully so. The short film Elba and Federico (1993) won big at the Brussels Film Festival. WIM is not only a visual journey through his artistic work, it is as much a voyage of discovery of the relationship the choreographer has with the big and small dramas of everyday life and how he incorporates these into his dance and film performances. Dancers and employees testify about Vandekeybus’ visionary talent and rousing enthusiasm, as well as his urge for perfection and at times erratic temperament. With lots of new archival material, unique home videos and in-depth interviews Lut Vandekeybus delivers an inspired portrait of her brother’s impressive career.

10 BILLION: WHAT'S ON YOUR PLATE? SCREENING: Wed May 4th (17:00) and Tue May 3rd (19:15) in STUK (Cinema ZED)
By 2050 the world population will have risen to a hallucinatory 10 billion. How will we ensure that everyone can be fed? Bestselling author and 'food fighter' Valentin Thurn looks for solutions to this pressing problem. A large amount of our food is currently produced in large-scale mass production, which puts the basis of our food sources at risk. Are there other options that are ecologically and economically justified? Valentin Thurn, who also made the controversial documentary Taste the Waste about food waste, travels the world in search of solutions. He visits organic farmers, but also commercial slaughterhouses, speculators of large-scale agribusiness and local urban agriculture projects. In India, he visits a seed bank, where locals claim their crops are much more resistant to the constant flooding than the mutated plants of multinationals like Bayer and Monsanto. In Thailand, he takes a look at an insect farm and he visits various private initiatives in England, Germany and the US. Thurn becomes convinced that there are only two possibilities to tackle the problems of the future: small-scale, sustainable agriculture and eating locally produced food. BOLSHOI BABYLON
PREMIERE
SCREENING: Sat April 30th (20:00) and Thu May 5th (19:30) in Kinepolis
Even the least cultured have heard of the Russian Bolshoi ballet. Look behind the curtains of this legendary institute and discover a hallucinatory snake pit of intrigue and scandal. In January 2013, Sergei Filin, the artistic director of the Bolshoi Ballet, was the victim of a brutal attack. Acid was thrown in his face. For decades, the Bolshoi Ballet was the crown jewel of the Russian identity. It was attended by top politicians worldwide, from Ronald Reagan to Fidel Castro. But this vicious assault put the Ballet in a very different light. When one of the main dancers was arrested on charges of assault, a very different, hidden world gradually came to the surface. A world of clashing egos, an intense power struggle and toxic jealousy. Shakespeare himself could not have come up with it. Bolshoi Babylon brings an intriguing story with a compelling mix of unique backstage footage, breathtaking performances and revelatory interviews with Bolshoi dancers. A legendary cultural institution on the brink due to intrigue, both inside and outside the theater walls. Because the ballet is so closely linked to the Russian identity and pride, the fact that the Ballet has become such a snake pit is not only a national tragedy, but also a symptom of the moral decay of Russia.

BROTHERS SCREENING: Tue May 3rd (17:30), Wed May 4th (15:00) and Sat May 7th (20:00) in STUK (Soetezaal)
Norwegian filmmaker Aslaug Holm filmed her two sons over a period of eight years. She delivers a beautiful and original film about growing up, trial and error, dreams and brotherly love. Boyhood in real life! How can you take years of footage about two brothers growing up and make something that surpasses your average home video? Norwegian filmmaker Aslaug Holm managed just that. Mark and Luke were 5 and 8 years old when their mother started filming them in what could be called a documentary version of Boyhood. The two boys, each with their own personality, grow up before the eyes of the viewer, as you see them evolve from child to teenager. Holms talent lies not only in stunning camera work, but in how she subtly demonstrates that small details can have a big impact on the relationship between the two brothers. She records their dreams and expectations, but also their worries and conflicts and even the influence of her camera on the family. The film is a tender registration of life itself, a beautiful portrait of human nature, poetic and yet authentic.

Is eating insects the solution for saving our planet? Insects as food has certainly been a hot topic, ever since the UN advised it as a solution to world hunger. Are they the new superfood or is it wishful thinking? Ever since the UN advised insects as food, they have been praised by chefs for their unique taste, by environmentalists for their low environmental costs and by food scientists for their high nutritional value. They seem to be the perfect solution to world hunger. Nordic Food Lab, a team from Copenhagen consisting of chefs and scientists, travels the world to listen to people who have been eating insect for years. They harvest and eat insects with people from Europe, Australia, Mexico, Kenya, Japan and many other places. Throughout their journey, which takes them from farms to international conferences, several difficult questions pop up. If insects were to be industrialized, will they still taste as good? Will they remain readily available for the people who count on them to survive? What if our ecosystem loses its balance? Are insects a reflection of our tottering food system, or are they our salvation? The screening of Sunday May 1st will be followed by a bugtasting. More info on www.docville.be.

DEMAIN SCREENING: Thu May 5th (17:00) in STUK (Cinema ZED), Sat May 7th (17:00) in Kinepolis
When the balance sheet is drawn about how our world is doing, we are usually faced with ominous forecasts and disaster scenarios. Threats that should prompt us to change. But what if we do not show problems, but solutions instead? When actress Mélanie Laurent read in a famous study in Nature that humanity and the world as we know it would end by 2100 she was shocked. It was another discouraging testimony of the ecological catastrophe that mankind has brought on itself. She was fed up with the negative news and decided to turn it around, together with director Cyril Dion. They are convinced that showing solutions and an optimistic story is the best way to make progress. With a camera on their shoulder and a microphone in their hand, they travel the world and meet pioneers of change. Spread across 10 countries and three continents, they meet people who believe that there is an alternative and who put their money where their mouth is. They are not only concerned with ecological problems, but also look at how passionate people are reinventing agriculture, energy, the economy, democracy and education. By bringing together these positive and substantial initiatives, they discover what the world of tomorrow could look like. The result is a refreshing look at familiar problems. We are not encouraged to change anything when we hear threats, but we do respond to an invitation that makes us want to join in. The screening of Thursday May 5th will be preceded by a lecture by Jan Lenaerts en Lineke Woelders, two climate scientists of the KU Leuven. In collaboration with Climate Week Leuven.

SCREENING: Sat April 30th (19:30) and Wed May 4th (20:00) in Kinepolis
Two men fighting over an amputated leg. This absurd but true story led to the both hilarious and poignant documentary Finders Keepers, a worldwide hit at international film festivals. The story seems too absurd for any scriptwriter to present to the world. When the enterprising Shannon Whisnant finds a mummified human leg in a second hand barbecue, he believes he has won the jackpot: this could very well be his golden ticket to fame and fortune. He demands an entrance fee from anyone who wants to see the leg. Local media pick up the crazy story, giving Shannon his coveted 15 minutes of fame. Thanks to the press, the story also reaches John Wood. It's his leg that was amputated after an accident and ended up in the barbecue, following a bizarre chain of circumstances. The two men get into an acrimonious battle over who is the rightful owner of the leg. Their bizarre feud makes the media love this story even more. Both men become even bigger celebrities and their personal lives are turned inside out. Directors Carberry and Tweel tell this absurd story in a brilliant way. FREE TO RUN
PREMIERE
SCREENING: Sun May 1st (19:30) and Tue May 3rd (20:00) in Kinepolis
Once upon a time there was a world in which running was something weirdos, eccentrics and protesters did. Where it was forbidden for women. Until the hype broke loose and we all became runners. From the streets of New York to the paths in the Swiss Alps, from São Paulo to Paris, Beijing or Sydney, men and women, champions and amateurs ... every year millions of people run. There are prestigious and grand marathons, there is the neighbor who jogs through the park, but running is firmly established in our society. Less than fifty years ago, things were quite different: running was reserved for men, limited to stadiums and there were strict, sometimes absurd rules. On the basis of unpublished testimonies and archival footage Free to Run tells the amazing story of running, specifically over the past 50 years. It shows the struggle women faced to be allowed to run, the emergence of cross-country running and marathons to the booming business running is today. Or how a marginal and militant act became a universal passion. Director Pierre Morath - an avid runner since his 15th birthday - combined his training as a historian with his passion for running. The history of running serves as a fascinating mirror of important social developments in recent decades. Free to Run is an inspiring tribute to running and the testimony of a change in mentality over the years.

FUOCOAMMARE SCREENING: Sun May 1st (11:00) in STUK (Cinema ZED), Fri May 6th (19:30) in Kinepolis
Fuocoammare by Gianfranco Rossi was the first documentary to take home the Golden Bear at the Berlinale. A true winner that brings the relevant issue of refugees to the forefront in a unique way. Berlin Jury president Meryl Streep spoke of a "major, visionary and necessary film” and the press was unanimously enthusiastic about this documentary. It tells the story of Lampedusa, the tiny Italian island in the midst of the storm that is the refugee crisis. One of the islanders is 12-year-old Samuele. Like all boys his age, he likes to have fun and hang out in the harbor. But his island is not like the other islands. Lampedusa has become the destination for scores of refugees, whose journey often ends when they drown off the coast. Every single day the islanders witness one of the greatest human tragedies of our time. Odd as it may seem, they also continue living their everyday lives on the island. Even in a small place like Lampedusa two worlds can coexist. Rossi spent 1.5 years on the island and presents the story of the refugees next to the story of the local residents. It is not only tragedy and horror, there is also compassion and regular life. Rossi already came to DOCVILLE with El Sicario, Room 164, a controversial documentary about a hit man, and Sacro Gra, a film that won the Golden Lion at the Venice Film Festival.

GHOSTLAND: THE VIEW OF THE JU'HOANSI SCREENING: Sat April 30th (16:00) and Sat May 7th (22:00) in STUK (Soetezaal)
A traditional African tribe visits Europe and lends us their perspective so we can observe ourselves the way they do. A warm and funny reflection on our habits and lifestyle through the eyes of one of the oldest cultures on our planet. The life of the Ju / Hoansi tribe is under severe pressure. The nomadic hunter gatherers of the Kalahari Desert will have to adapt their ancient lifestyle. The Namibian Government has banned hunting, the endless plains of the Kalahari are now littered with fences and the tribe is forced to settle down in houses. Director Simon Stadler is a historical anthropologist and is fascinated by ancient cultures and the changes they undergo. In Ghostland he turns the tables: what starts out as a look at their ancient culture turns into a compelling reflection on our own culture. The trip to Europe not only makes for a funny culture shock, almost like a documentary version of The Gods Must Be Crazy. Gradually the study object becomes the explorer and the tourist attraction becomes the tourist. We face a mirror in which our modern rituals and 'civilized' world suddenly look very unusual. It is as if we encounter ourselves for the first time, through the eyes of an almost extinct, ancient culture.

IN PURSUIT OF SILENCE
PREMIERE
SCREENING: Sun May 1st (13:45) in STUK (Cinema ZED), Thu May 5th (19:30) in STUK (Soetezaal)
We are constantly - voluntarily or not - surrounded by sound. Silence is an increasingly rare commodity, maybe even something from a bygone era. A contemplative film about the meaning and effect of (lack of) silence on the contemporary human. In 1952, avant-garde composer John Cage wrote the piece 4'33''. The pianist does not touch his piano. A cough or the shuffling feet of the audience are the only audible sounds. It is one of the many expressions of the impact of the silence. But is there such a thing as pure silence? Why do we look for it? Or, conversely, why do we seem to run away from it? In a trip around the world we discover the secret nature of silence - from the silence in the remote American wilderness and the silence in Japanese Zen monasteries to the hallucinatory absence of silence in contemporary cities, where unhealthy noise pollution causes aggression and stress. Indeed, there is no aspect of human existence that sound and his counterpart silence do not affect. In Pursuit of Silence is a cinematic listening experience, paradoxically a surprisingly musical film that makes you prick up your ears and gives you time to reflect on silence. The exhibition of May 5 will be followed by a DOCVILLE+session The importance of silence in a world that's getting louder every day? This debate is freely accessible. More info p. 105.

IN UTERO
PREMIERE
SCREENING: Sat April 30th (20:00) and Thu May 5th (16:00) in STUK (Soetezaal)
How do your experiences in the womb impact your later life? The groundbreaking documentary In Utero shows through interviews, cultural myths, popular movies and technological trends just how important your time in the womb really is. With In Utero American documentary filmmaker Kathleen Man Gyllenhaal presents an immersive, cinematic documentary that looks at one of the greatest mysteries of human life. What is life in the womb like and what is the lasting impact it has on the rest of our lives? The film does so on the basis of three questions: How are we made? Who are we? And why are we who we are? We are, after all, not just the result of a fusion of genes, but also of our environment. By bringing together theories of epigenetics and biochemistry, interviews with doctors and psychologists and even the stories of The Matrix and Alice in Wonderland Gyllenhaal made a very interesting documentary about the origins of human life and seeks to answer many vital questions.

JHERONIMUS BOSCH: TOUCHED BY THE DEVIL
PREMIERE
SCREENING: Mon May 2nd (21:45) in STUK (Labozaal)
Thanks to the arrival of new radiography and infrared techniques, an art historical research team is able to reach the bottom paint layers of a painting and thus gain insight into the creative process of 'wizard' Hieronymus Bosch. The documentary Jheronimus Bosch follows the experts at the Bosch Research and Conservation Project across the world - ranging from the Louvre in Paris to the National Gallery in Washington - during four years. These experts reach the first layers of the paintings and can thus analyse Bosch’s creative process. In addition, the Noordbrabants Museum is putting on an exhibition in 2016 in honor of the 500th anniversary of 'their' Jheronimus Bosch. However, the question is how many original Bosch paintings they will be able to get to the Netherlands. The Prado, which owns most Bosch paintings, is not cooperative as they also want to organize an exhibition in honor of the fifteenth-century Dutch master. In this documentary, filmmaker Pieter van Huystee asks the question 'what is a genuine Bosch?’ The answer seems unclear, even to the experts. Van Huystee also offers a deeper look at the world of museums and shows the immense task of putting together an exhibition.

MINIMALISM: A DOCUMENTARY ABOUT THE IMPORTANT THINGS
PREMIERE
SCREENING: Sun May 1st (21:00) in STUK (Soetezaal), Mon May 2nd (18:00) in STUK (Labozaal)
Less is more: that is the premise of this inspiring documentary. Imagine a life with less: less stuff, less mess, less stress ... A life with fewer distractions. A life that gives you more time, more commitment and most importantly: more happiness. How much stuff do you own? For most people, it is too much to mention. And it seems like we are constantly looking for something new. Your mobile phone - once the newest model - is now dated and becomes a source of unhappiness, even though it still works perfectly. Consumerism reigns supreme, causing stress and frustration. This documentary shows the audience a glimpse into the lives of several minimalists and how they feel about their lives. Minimalist architects, designers, musicians, businessmen, et cetera. According to them, minimalism is the quickest way to a better life. Do you really need all that stuff? Should you replace something if it still works? Minimalism: A Documentary About The Important Things shows how you could improve your life according to the minimalists. On Monday May 3rd, STUK Arts Centre organises a debate around the theme Degrowth. More info p. 105.

MY SCIENTOLOGY MOVIE
AVANT-PREMIERE
SCREENING: Sat April 30th (18:00) and Fri May 6th (19:30) in STUK (Soetezaal), Fri April 29th (19:30) in Kinepolis
For his first feature documentary, British documentary maker Louis Theroux targets the Church of Scientology. As they refuse all cooperation, he tries to get his own unique insight into the working methods of the mysterious religion. With his black glasses and modest demeanour, documentary filmmaker Louis Theroux manages to make incisive portraits about subcultures other filmmakers can barely access - using his natural charm and modesty. But when he makes a request to visit the headquarters in Los Angeles, it is refused. Theroux does not throw in the towel: with the help of high-ranking former member Mark Rathbun and inspired by film techniques used by the church itself, he is determined to gain insight in the process of Scientology through re-enactments. Together, Theroux and Rathbun organize castings to find the perfect actors to play Miscavige and the church’s most famous member, Tom Cruise. At times, the re-enacted scenes bring the real Miscavige uncomfortably close. The reaction from Scientology, however, is swift and soon Theroux meets their film crew. It does not prevent him from looking into the famed Gold Base where Miscavige and his confidants live. However, the Scientology film crew is never far away, resulting in equally alarming and hilarious confrontations. As the reconstructions show ever more clearly how violently things work in the church, questions are raised about the role Rathbun has played in this reign of terror. When Theroux confronts him, the tension between the two rises high.

NOMA: MY PERFECT STORM
PREMIERE
SCREENING: Sun May 1st (20:00) in Kinepolis
A candid look behind the scenes of the world famous restaurant Noma and into the mind of its brilliant culinary innovator RenĂŠ Redzepi. For years, restaurant Noma ruled the culinary world. The Danish restaurant was elected Best Restaurant in the World four times. The man behind this success is chef RenĂŠ Redzepi. As the son of an immigrant, he often felt like an outsider. Ironically, he gained worldwide acclaim as the beacon of 'pure Nordic cuisine'. Noma is about more than just delicious food. It's all about the intense quest to find unique local flavors and ingredients and use them in a perfect recipe. Redzepi wants his guests to taste where they are and which season it is, based on their plate. The film follows Redzepi during a tumultuous period in which it becomes clear that there is no margin of error at the top of the culinary world and that a fabulous reputation can be a heavy burden. It is refreshing to see that the person behind the almost divine reputation ascribed to Redzepi by foodies all over the world is a regular guy, who is mainly driven by the passion to create something new. And the passion is obvious, even on the big screen: it is a pleasure to see a team working in the kitchen as one cohesive organism. The delightful images of the various dishes are guaranteed to make your mouth water.

NUTS!
PREMIERE
SCREENING: Tue May 3rd (19:30) and Fri May 6th (20:00) in Kinepolis
A doctor without scruples who gains fame and amasses a fortune by inserting goat testicles into impotent men? Nuts! is a quirky and hilarious documentary about an incredible story, and about the power of a good story. John Brinkley is a young doctor who started a practice in Kansas in 1918. One day a farmer from the village asks him a remarkable question: could the implantation of the testicles of a healthy goat in his body cure his impotence? Brinkley is open to this crazy idea and performs the operation. Soon more impotent patients start showing up. Brinkley and his testicle transplants gain national fame and he builds up a huge fortune. In between his operations, he also founds a radio station, goes into politics and deceives almost everyone around him. And successfully so, because everybody so badly wants to believe his tall stories. And that is exactly what Nuts! is really about: it is an amazing, colorful biopic about a beautiful character but director Penny Lane also demonstrates how much we all love to go along with a compelling story. After all, everyone believes the stories they want to believe ... Lane uses archive material, different animations, interviews and an 'unreliable' narrator to tell the story. The viewer might be put on the wrong track, like Brinkley did with everyone he knew. An astute and incomparable documentary about (our urge for) a fantastic story.

THE DIPLOMAT
PREMIERE
SCREENING: Sat April 30th (16:15) in STUK (Cinema ZED)
The life of the influential American diplomat Richard Holbrooke offers fascinating insights into contemporary American foreign policy. For over 50 years, from Vietnam to Bosnia to Afghanistan, he witnessed it all. The downside of Richard Holbrooke's impressive career is that he was a very absent father. Years after his death, his son David tries to get to know him better. He interviews an impressive list of political figures: Hillary and Bill Clinton, Al Gore, John Kerry, Kofi Annan, Madeleine Albright ... they all touch on Holbrooke's inexhaustible energy. His old-school, borderline arrogant style brought him much success, for example at the end of the war in Bosnia. But his approach was less well received by the more subtle Obama, who pushed Holbrooke aside more and more during his last mission to find a solution for Afghanistan. The Diplomat offers a unique look at foreign policy at the highest level, what goes on behind the scenes when it is time to decide on war and peace and how America's role as international policeman has evolved during the last decades. At the same time this is a film a son made for his father. It shows that even on the stage of world politics it isn’t all about major strategies and performances, but about ordinary people, each with their own personalities and quirks.

THE EMPEROR'S NEW CLOTHES SCREENING: Thu May 5th (20:00) in Kinepolis
A window washer has to work for 300 years in order to earn as much as the CEO of his company does ... in one year. This growing inequality is what Russell Brand denounces in the aptly titled The Emperor's New Clothes, a title that refers to being blind for the truth. The 2008 economic crisis has taken a heavy toll, especially on the population that has lost a lot due to rigorous cutbacks. What bothers Brand is that the CEOs of the major banks and large companies all keep their bonuses and find all kinds of ways to avoid paying taxes. World-known British comedian and activist Russell Brand cooperates with director Michael Winterbottom to denounce economic inequality and the consequences of the financial crisis in The Emperor's New Clothes. The comedic factor but also Brand’s own knowledge of this serious topic, make this documentary both educational and fun to watch. It comes across as very sincere, a true cry of rage against the political and economic elite.

THE WOLFPACK SCREENING: Fri May 6th (21:30) in STUK (Cinema ZED)
Six brothers, their sister and mother have spent many years locked away by their tyrannous father in a small flat in the heart of New York City. Their television and DVD-collection are the only way to learn about the outside world. To pass the time, the brothers watch movies, a whole lot of movies. Growing up, all they learn about society is gleaned from the stories and realities of the movies they watch. They recreate their favourite scenes using elaborate homemade props, costumes and makeup, resulting in fascinating re-enactments from Reservoir Dogs, The Nightmare Before Christmas and The Dark Knight. One day, when their father forgets to lock the door, one of boys manages to sneak out secretly. For the brothers, this is the start of a new chapter in their lives. Director Crystal Moselle gets to know the boys, nicknamed The Wolfpack, on the streets as they explore New York in their costumes: six bright boys with long black hair, sunglasses and identical clothes. Slowly but surely, she learns more about them and unravels the secret behind their strange upbringing. A bizarre but optimistic film about the power of imagination, awarded with the Grand Jury Prize for Best Documentary at Sundance. WE COME AS FRIENDS
PREMIERE
SCREENING: Fri May 6th (20:00) in STUK (Cinema ZED)
A sizzling and stunning documentary about globalization in a mythicallooking country, South Sudan. Oscar-nominated filmmaker Hubert Sauper headed there with a tiny plane and records disconcerting and astonishing stories. With a tiny self-built aircraft filmmaker Hubert Sauper (Darwin's Nightmare) explores South Sudan. A relatively unknown country that looks like a mix of 'Out of Africa' and a Tarzan movie. The decades-long civil war has prevented any form of modernization. The lack of roads forces you to use a plane and the tribes live in huts made of mud and straw. Southern Sudan is an unexplored planet for capitalist explorers: a pristine area full of infinite resources and fertile land, with 'ignorant' locals as your only hindrance. In this arena everything seems to converge in an almost surreal way. Illiterate warriors who for decades have defended their homeland, now sign contracts ending their ownership forever. Chinese build shiny high-tech compounds for oil and dump all their waste right outside the gate. Local politicians who want to modernize their country and foreign businessmen, politicians and missionaries who are happy to 'help'. You can see and taste economic globalization in all its nakedness and rawness. Sauper received an Oscar nomination for his previous disconcerting documentary Darwin's Nightmare and We Come as Friends has already won prizes at the Berlin Film Festival and Sundance Film Festival.

WHERE TO INVADE NEXT
PREMIERE
SCREENING: Sat May 7th (19:30) in Kinepolis
America’s getting ready for elections, and just now their best-known and most controversial documentary filmmaker Michael Moore returns with a hilarious, but also deadly serious documentary about how the US can become 'great' again. Donald Trump's slogan Make America Great Again has a very different meaning to Michael Moore. Moore tries to figure out which countries the US should 'invade' now; not to defend political or economic interests, but to learn something from them. The ironic title does not refer to an analysis of US foreign policy, but to a new kind of battle: according to Moore, it is high time that America explores other countries 'in order to steal their best ideas'. He goes to Italy to see how paid holidays work - something they can only dream of in the US. In Finland, he discoveres a different kind of education, in Iceland a political class where women make up the majority ... With a lot of humor Moore plays the idealist who joyously discovers how life can be improved on. While his earlier documentaries (Bowling for Columbine, Fahrenheit 9/11) were mainly driven by an intense anger against the system, Where to Invade Next is a playful but subversive comedy. Behind the hilarious approach, of course, is the stinging reality of the limitations of contemporary American society.

(DIS)HONESTY: THE TRUTH ABOUT LIES
PREMIERE
SCREENING: Sat April 30th (17:30) and Thu May 5th (19:45) in STUK (Labozaal)
Everybody lies from time to time: a little white lie, infidelity, fraud or plagiarism. Dishonesty seems inextricably linked to our world. Behavioral psychologist Dan Ariely (Predictably Irrational) examines why we lie and why it might actually be a good thing. (Dis)Honesty: The Truth About Lies explores the dark side of mankind and the culture of lying. It does this via several interviews with people whose lies have had disastrous consequences: a Wall Street trader, an NBA referee, a married but unhappy wife and a manager. They all rationalize their actions, and they do not see what they have done wrong. In addition, director Yael Melamede and a team of scientists, including Dan Ariely, examine why we lie so often. They expose our tendency to be dishonest, even when we do not realize this ourselves, and how we often don’t feel that we are doing anything wrong when we lie. The result is a fascinating look at the forces that drive our dishonest behavior.

MOTLEY'S LAW

SCREENING: Mon May 2nd (16:00) and Thu May 5th (22:00) in STUK (Labozaal)
Who would be the least obvious person to be the only foreign lawyer to have a practice in Afghanistan? Undoubtedly it would be an assertive, unveiled African-American woman. And that's exactly what Kimberly Motley is. A surprising story that casts an unprecedented look at life in Kabul. Attorney Kimberly Motley - a former Miss Wisconsin who had never been outside the US before - headed to Kabul for the first time in 2008. In 2004, when Afghanistan got its first democratic constitution, a formal legal system was implemented, combined with the informal Sharia law. Motley is honest about its original purpose: she went there to make money. After all, she herself grew up in poverty and she is determined to secure the financial future of her children. But soon something changed: the lack of human rights and widespread corruption sparked a passion in her she will not give up quickly. She defends various parties: a British soldier who has been incarcerated for fraud without trial for two years and counting, as well as an Afghan girl who threatens to be punished for leaving her husband. She continues to fight despite threats and attacks and the fact that she misses her family, who have stayed behind in the US. Motley's Law already won prizes at prestigious festivals like IDFA and DOC NYC.

OMO CHILD: THE RIVER AND THE BUSH
PREMIERE
SCREENING: Tue May 3rd (17:00) and Wed May 4th (22:00) in STUK (Labozaal)
In the heart of Ethiopia children are killed because they are cursed, according to local beliefs. One man does everything he can to stop this tradition. Do not miss this epic story about how the courage and passion of just one person can change the world. Lale Labuko was born and raised in the Omo Valley where the Kara People live. When he is fifteen, he witnesses the murder of a child. The elders have decided that the child carries the mingi-curse. Labuko is shaken, even more so when he finds out two of his older sisters have already undergone the same fate. Mingi children are considered a major threat to the tribe, because they bring disease, drought and famine. Traditional beliefs state that these children have different defining characteristics. When a baby’s upper teeth emerge first, before any lower teeth have appeared, for example, that is considered a clear signal. Labuko is the very first of his tribe to head to the city, where he goes to school. Years later he returns to the valley to stop this gruesome tradition. But the elders are not easily convinced. The survival of the tribe is their responsibility and they can not risk that the Mingi curse should bring death and destruction. During a five year period, the film follows Labuko's quest as he passionately tries to bring an end to this ancient belief, risking his own life. Do not miss this epic story - set in stunning Ethiopian landscapes - about the clash between the moral conviction of one man and a tradition of fear. Or how the courage and passion of just one person can change the world.

ONLY THE DEAD
PREMIERE
SCREENING: Tue May 3rd (22:30) in STUK (Soetezaal), Fri May 6th (15:00) in STUK (Labozaal)
A war reporter who has spent many years on battlegrounds shares his personal and uncensored footage in a documentary that knocks you out and gives viewers an unprecedented insight on the impact of war in all its facets. For years, journalist Michael Ware worked as a war reporter in Iraq. With the fall of Saddam Hussein’s Regime mid-2003 the Western world expects peace and democracy in Iraq. But at that moment Al Zarqawi - who was to become one of the world’s most wanted terrorists - starts a different kind of war, using beheadings on film and suicide bombings. He handpicks Michael Ware as the recipient of these shocking images. Ware embarks on an epic journey and reaches places other journalists never do. Even though he works for the written press Ware still films everything he encounters. He uses his small hand camera as a notebook and a diary. As he records what he sees, he struggles with all kinds of questions. Is it ok to film someone who is slowly dying? Or does it make you an accomplice? How dark does your heart have to be to handle all of this? What does it say about you as a person if you choose to do this? After seven years, Ware returns from Iraq with hundreds of hours of unique, personal and often disturbing imagery. He combines forces with Oscar winner Guttentag to convert his hours of film into a disconcerting and intense documentary about the reality of war. This film will be preceded by the short documentary A Kiss Deferred. More info p. 70.

SCREENING: Sat April 30th (15:30) in STUK (Labozaal), Sun May 1st (19:30) in STUK (Cinema ZED), Wed May 4th (17:30) in STUK (Soetezaal)
Living legend Noam Chomsky describes the end of 'The American Dream': the ideal that everyone, regardless of their background, has the opportunity to one day belong to the rich happy few. Noam Chomsky is widely regarded as one of the most important contemporary thinkers. In a final series of interviews - recorded over a period of four years - he dissects contemporary capitalist society. He goes back to the founding of the United States, when the foundations were laid, and reveals how, especially in recent decades, everything has become focused on the rich becoming richer. How did we arrive at this juncture in history where there is a historically unprecedented gap between rich and poor? He offers a clear explanation of why the middle class is disappearing and how democracy is dying out at the expense of a handful of powerful players. Chomsky claims that it is increasingly an illusion to think that you can detach yourself from the class you were born in and that everyone, whatever their background, can belong to the rich happy few. Profound, but clarifying interviews are interspersed with historically relevant images and insightful animation. Requiem for the American Dream is an understandable and convincing exposition of Chomsky's vision on society and a must-see for anyone who is interested in the dangerous pitfalls of democracy in a capitalist society.

THE GIRL WHO SAVED MY LIFE
PREMIERE
SCREENING: Tue May 3rd (21:30) and Fri May 6th (20:30) in STUK (Labozaal)
Because of a girl, a man does not board a flight with a fatal ending. This is not the story of a Hollywood rom com, but an incredibly incisive refugee portrait by the Kurdish-Swedish filmmaker Hogir Hirori. Filmmaker Hogir Hirori lives in Sweden with his pregnant wife. When he sees the images of millions of people fleeing Iraq because of the advance of IS, he cannot help but document this tragedy. It is his native country: he knows the area, speaks the language and - above all - he knows what it's like to be a refugee. Once there, he gets the chance to travel in a helicopter headed for the Shingal mountains, where hundreds of thousands of Yazidis are trapped, surrounded by IS. A unique opportunity for a documentary filmmaker. But on the way to the helicopter, he spots an 11-year-old girl, lying on the ground, in pain, by herself, in the scorching heat. He decides not to take the helicopter, and to help her instead. A decision that saved his life, because that same helicopter crashed. He later returns to find the girl who saved his life. During his quest he meets many war victims, who all have their own story. The big difference with other documentaries is that Hirori is 'one of them', he also has his own story. When he was about the same age as the girl he was separated from his parents for a period of time. His father was imprisoned because he fought against IS with the Kurdish Peshmerga. His involvement permeates every image. More than ever, viewers experience the reality of war refugees.

THIS CHANGES EVERYTHING
PREMIERE
SCREENING: Sun May 1st (18:00) and Fri May 6th (22:30) in STUK (Labozaal)
What if the fight against global warming is our best chance at building a better world? This Changes Everything follows seven communities across five continents and their epic battle against global warming. This Changes Everything, based on the book by Naomi Klein, is an attempt to think differently about global warming, to see it as an opportunity to create a better world, a more fair place. It is not meant, like so many other environmental documentaries, to scare the viewer. It wants to provide the strength and the courage to make real changes. The documentary by Avi Lewis takes us to all corners of the world, from Montana in the United States to South India and Beijing where he shows how they deal with the crisis there, on the front line of global warming. Naomi Klein narrates this documentary and connects all these warrior stories with the economic system which has placed them in that position. Throughout the documentary, she works towards one of her more radical ideas: that we can use the existential crisis that is global warming to replace our failed economic system with something radically different.

DOCS IN HET DEPOT 73
This film will be preceded by the short documentary There is Something about Parades. More info p. 79.

JANIS: LITTLE GIRL BLUE SCREENING: Mon May 2nd (17:00) and Tue May 3rd (21:30) in Het Depot
Blues singer Janis Joplin died in 1970 at the age of 27 from an overdose of heroin. Director Amy Berg brings an intimate portrait of a smart, complex woman who came out of nowhere and changed music forever. She sang hits like Me and Bobby McGee, sold four million albums posthumously and has been an example for female rock artists to this day: blues singer Janis Joplin. In Janis: Little Girl Blue filmmaker Amy Berg gives us a unique insight into the highs and lows of the life of Janis Joplin. We see a woman yearning for love, who wants nothing more than to give herself to the world. As a child she was bullied and as a teenager she never belonged to the clique of pretty girls. When she discovered at seventeen that her voice could help her stand out, it seems like the end to a difficult period in her life. We see her childhood and the success, the standing ovations at the Monterey Pop Festival in 1967 and we see her go completely crazy at Woodstock in 1969. But the film also shows the drug use that ultimately proved fatal. Throughout the film, we see fragments from the letters Janis wrote to her parents and loved ones, read by singer-songwriter Cat Power. Janis: Little Girl Blue is a compelling tribute to both a damaged human being and a fearless singer.

SOAKED IN BLEACH SCREENING: Sun May 1st (17:00) and Mon May 2nd (21:30) in Het Depot
On April 8, 1994, the lifeless body of Nirvana singer Kurt Cobain was found. The media jumped on the story: Kurt Cobain had committed suicide. It is true that was found with a rifle in his hands and that there was a suicide note. But was it really suicide? Detective Tom Grant has a controversial theory: Cobain did not commit suicide but was murdered. And maybe Grant knows what he’s talking about. In the beginning of April 1994, he received a call from Courtney Love, when her husband had gone missing from a rehab clinic he was voluntarily staying in. Dylan Carlson, a friend of Cobain and Love’s, joined Grant for a hopeless search mission in Seattle. The whole situation confused Grant more and more. The contradictory statements of widow Courtney Love convinced Grant that there was more to the singer’s death. He decided to investigate and made some remarkable discoveries. Moreover, he recorded all of his conversations. Since Courtney Love does not agree with the theory or with the film, director Statler had to be creative. He works with actors and he reconstructs what could be the last days in the life of Kurt Cobain. There is hard evidence handed on a silver platter, so Soaked in Bleach has more credibility than your average conspiracy movie. After watching this documentary, you might be just as convinced as Grant that Cobain was murdered.

THE REDEMPTION OF THE DEVIL
PREMIERE
SCREENING: Sun May 1st (21:30) and Mon May 2nd (19:30) in Het Depot
An honest portrait of Jesse 'The Devil' Hughes, frontman of the Eagles of Death Metal, the band that was playing at the Bataclan in Paris the night of the terrorist attacks in November. A dangerous cocktail of sex, drugs, rock'n'roll and extreme right. A year in the life of Jesse 'The Devil' Hughes: pastor, musician, father, lover, drug addict, deeply religious and a conservative patriot. With his childhood friend Josh Homme, frontman of Queens of the Stone Age, he is working on the latest Eagles of Death Metal album. On November 13, 2015, four years after this film was shot, Hughes found himself in the eye of the storm, when terrorists opened fire on the audience during a performance of his band Eagles of Death Metal in the Bataclan in Paris. His defeated reaction was met with a lot of respect, but the same cannot be said about his opinion that everyone should be armed. Hughes is indeed a strong supporter of gun ownership, like many other (conservative) Americans. He also raves about Ronald Reagan and is deeply religious, despite his excessive drug use and his relationship with a former porn actress. The Redemption of the Devil is an honest portrait of this bundle of contradictions, a rare rock musician: openly ultra-conservative and extreme right.

We know we can count on Bruce Willis to save the world in Armageddon, but who will save us from a devastating asteroid impact in real life? Disaster Playground hilariously investigates possible disasters and the solutions proposed by scientists. From NASA and the SETI Institute to the White House and the United Nations, director Nelly Ben Hayoun takes us to the researchers who deal with potential space disaster scenarios. How will the world react? Which agency will take the necessary steps and who will save the planet? Because the total destruction that would follow the impact of an asteroid is so unimaginable, Hayoun chose a cinematic approach. Vibrant scientific and philosophical discussions are interspersed with over-the-top re-enactments of two possible doomsday scenarios. With its brilliant soundtrack, featuring The Prodigy among others, Disaster Playground cheerfully sails through the reality of the unimaginable: a global, devastating disaster.

HEART OF A DOG SCREENING: Fri May 6th (22:30) in STUK (Cinema ZED)
Artist and musician Laurie Anderson had to process the deaths of her mother, her husband Lou Reed and her dog Lolabelle in quick succession. Surrender to a filmic essay about love and loss. Not long after she lost her beloved dog Lolabelle, Laurie Anderson also had to deal with the death of her mother. Less than two years later she lost her husband Lou Reed, with whom she was a couple for 21 years. She translated the impact of the grieving process - which started with the loss of her dog into a creative and personal essay about life, love, death and language. She combines her abilities as a musician, artist and performer and combines animation, 8mm personal archives, text and self-written compositions to create an impressive narration. A kind of bright stream of consciousness, her voice is the constant factor throughout the stories and pictures about the dog, the past, fantasies, political and philosophical theories. A film to lose yourself in and one you have to surrender to in order to fully enjoy it. Heart of a Dog was screened at several prestigious film festivals and ended up on the long list of the Oscar for Best Documentary.

DOCVILLE-celebrity Nikolaus Geyrhalter brings an ode to humanity, starting from a possible future scenario in which mankind no longer exists. A sizzling movie that makes you deeply aware of the here and now. Abandoned buildings, dilapidated ruins, towns overgrown by nature, crumbling roads: all these places were built by people, but are now abandoned. They are gradually being returned to nature. With images that are both breathtakingly beautiful and disturbing, Homo sapiens is a beautiful movie about the finitude and fragility of human existence. Which traces of our lives will be left when we are no longer around? Is it a source of comfort that the world would persist even long after people are gone? Nikolaus Geyrhalter’s films are also called film poems. He does not go for a quick information round, but chooses a quiet rhythm and a poetic rather than narrative approach that offers space for reflection. This causes the underlying message to hit even harder. After Abendland and Our Daily Bread he now aims his camera at forgotten places. Thanks to the distant, recording attitude of the director, the scenes have an almost unearthly, weird, abstract beauty.

KATE PLAYS CHRISTINE

SCREENING: Sat April 30th (19:30) and Sat May 7th (17:30) in STUK (Labozaal)
In the '70s television presenter Christine Chubbuck committed suicide on live television. Director Robert Greene asks actress Kate Lyn Sheil to take on the role of Chubbuck to grasp the ungraspable. On July 15, 1974 Christine Chubbuck puts a gun to her head during a live broadcast and pulls the trigger. Now, four decades later, director Greene asks actress Kate Lyn Sheil to prepare for a role as Chubbuck. She travels to Florida, visits relevant places and talks to people who knew her in an attempt to capture the mystery and meaning of Christine’s tragic death. At the same time she is an actress trying to mentally prepare for her role, as she tries to inhabit Christine’s state of mind. She is open about how she deals with this as an actress and how she uses what she knows for her future interpretation. In an ingenious way director Robert Greene looks for a more substantial truth along the classic dividing line between investigative journalism and fiction. As in his previous hybrid documentary Actress the persona of the actress becomes the ideal channel through which he captures a very complex matter. Or at least to question the idea of 'truth' in documentaries or classic investigative journalism and to show that answers from the past are never straightforward, but full of prejudice and assumptions.

MUSEE DE L"INCONNU
OPEN AIR SCREENING
WORLD PREMIERE
SCREENING: Wed May 4th (21:00), lawn St-Maartensdal (Minckelersstraat 64), free entrance
Last year, Ief Spincemaille, Leuven’s official City Artist, created a temporary installation on the lawn of St. Maartensdal. In exactly the same spot, we will show a film about this project and what it triggered in open air and for free. In September last year, Leuven’s City Artist Ief Spincemaille built a small earthen museum on the lawn of the residential St. Maartensdal. The museum’s collection consisted of models and replicas of his own work of the last four years. It deals with light, air, vast distances and the horizon. Spincemaille received a lot of visitors in the museum and spent hours wandering door to door. People brought him food, shouted things from the balconies and invited him to sleep over. After two weeks, the museum was closed. The reflective roof of the museum was removed so that the rain would return the structure back to nature. Musee De l'inconnu was a quest for the unknown in a world unknown to the artist. This journey was filmed and made into a short film which will be shown on May 4 on the big screen, on the lawn where the museum previously stood. The audience will not only be able to sit on the lawn, but can also watch from the balconies of the residents of Block 1, the same place where they saw the project flourish and perish.

I AM IN SPACE SCREENING: Mon May 2nd (15:30) and Sat May 7th (19:30) in STUK (Cinema ZED)
How many young kids dream about becoming an astronaut? Moving testimonies set to impressive space images take you on an unforgettable journey into space. Astronaut Jean-Francois Clervoy accomplished what remains a childhood dream for many. He flew on the Space Shuttle three times. During his mission, he made personal video diaries, which he later shared with director Dana Ranga. On the basis of this unique and authentic film footage, previously unreleased material from NASA and transcripts of interviews with over 50 astronauts, I am in Space paints a portrait of life in space. And life in space turns out to be pretty damn hard. The sun is scorching hot and rises 16 times a day - making sleep almost impossible. There is no privacy, the lighting is clinical, the hum of the machines and the endless weightlessness complicates everything. More than the physical challenge, your psyche is put to the test. An ongoing battle against depression and the pressure of endless patience make life on a space station anything but easy. You are far removed from the rest of humanity and your puny life is fragile in the hostile environment that is the universe. Everything around you is functional which makes it so surprising that an astronaut must be a master of improvisation. Because everything does not go exactly as planned in space. The fascinating I am in Space does not offer the viewer a travelogue, as much as an unprecedented experience of what it feels like to be in space.

PLANETARY
PREMIERE
SCREENING: Mon May 2nd (21:30) and Thu May 5th (14:00) in STUK (Cinema ZED)
Extraordinary images of the beauty of our planet show the growing awareness that everything is interconnected. An impressive visual essay that you have to watch on the big screen. In 2012, Guy Reid directed a short documentary called Overview about the experience many astronauts have when they see Earth from a distance for the first time: an intense revelation of how small mankind is in the bigger picture. But not in the negative sense. On the contrary, it is the realization that our planet is one big whole, an exceptional environment in which all life is interconnected. In Planetary Reid translates this experience to the big screen. With stunning images shot around the world, he not only shows the beauty of our planet, but also the fact that the interconnectedness of all life on earth is something worth protecting. Because even though the astronauts cherish this intense emotion, it appears that this fundamental realization doesn’t really resonate with many people who keep their feet firmly on the ground. We continue to look at nature as a kind of storehouse we can use or - even worse - plunder at will. The stunning images of Planetary are the ultimate wake-up call, as well as a poetic visual essay.

STAR MEN
PREMIERE
SCREENING: Wed May 4th (21:30) and Sat May 7th (18:00) in STUK (Soetezaal)
Four world-renowned astronomers celebrate 50 years of research and friendship. A heartwarming ode, not to the tough astronauts, but to those other heroes who remained on the ground and brought the universe closer to us. Four ancient scholars take a road trip in the Southwest of the US, a journey that brings back their youthful adventures and explores the influence each of them had on the scientific elucidation of the secret world of the universe. The astronomers’ careers took place during the period of the 'space race' and so they have plenty of memories from a very distinct time period in the 20th century. From the discovery of space in the 60's to the Cold War and more recent discoveries. Each of them has their own strength: Robert is the designer of instruments, Donald’s the theorist, Nick is the visionary and Wal the observer. Together, they represent the most productive period in the history of astronomy. They helped build the biggest observatories and made revolutionary discoveries about the universe, discoveries that influenced the image that humanity has of itself. Together they go on a journey, from the ancient telescope at Mt Wilson to growing observatories. They redo a hike in the Grand Canyon that almost got the best of them as young men. During the journey through breathtaking scenery, they look back on their academic achievements, but also reflect on how their work had an impact on their own vision of life, on the question whether life has a purpose, whether there is a bigger picture and whether there will always be limits to our knowledge. Star Men is not only a very personal documentary, but also a comprehensive film about the big life questions. The screening of Wednesday May 4rd will be followed by an astronomy session. THE LAST MAN ON THE MOON
PREMIERE
SCREENING: Sun May 1st (22:00) and Sat May 7th (20:00) in STUK (Labozaal)
Neil Armstrong was the first. But the story of the last man to set foot on the moon is just as fascinating. A harrowing encounter with an iconic figure who is not afraid to show the person behind the heroic astronaut status. After Neil Armstrong's famous first step on the moon, a total of 11 other men have walked on the moon. Cene Cernan was the last and he stayed there for three days. Just before he returned, he consciously left footprints and wrote the initials of his daughter in the dust, because he knew that it would take a while before anyone else traveled to the moon. This was not just a bit of fun, but a personal catharsis. Like all candidate astronauts, Cernan had sacrificed everything for years to achieve the ultimate dream. Their family life had to make way for their ambition and their acclaimed commitment and perseverance had a big impact on their environment. Or, as his wife remarked: "If you think going to the moon is hard, try staying at home." Director Mark Craig combines rare archival footage, stunning visual effects and sincere conversations with the now 80-year-old Cernan. A very honest and personal story about a unique life full of spectacular adventures, burning ambition, intense satisfaction, profound friendship, heavy sacrifices and intense loss.

The International Space Station is an ancient dream of humanity come true. The ISS not only symbolizes the discovery of the universe, but it is also a unique collaboration between different nations in order to turn this dream into reality. In May 2014 three men were sent into space for a period of six months: the American astronaut Reid Wiseman, German Alexander Gerst and Russian Maxim Surayev. For Wiseman and Barley, it was their first space trip. They take you on a breathtaking adventure. The film follows them during their last months of training in different locations - the NASA center in Houston, Star City near Moscow and the European Centre in Cologne - and ultimately, the launch from Kazakhstan in May 2014. During their six-month stay, the astronauts also shoot footage, giving the viewer an overall picture of what it means to be an astronaut. Zero Gravity is a unique experience full of inside information, fascinating images of space as well as a beautiful story about friendship and devotion. This film will be preceded by the short documentary If I Die on Mars. More info p. 93. The screening of Sunday May 1st will be followed by the lecture Mission to Mars. More info p. 106.

BROTHERS
AGE 10
SCREENING: Tue Tue May 3rd (17:30), Wed May 4th (15:00) and Sat May 7th (20:00) in STUK (Soetezaal)

PRIZE FOR BEST TV DOCUMENTARY For the second time DOCVILLE awards a prize for the best TV documentary; a prize for the most impressive documentary series shown on one of the Flemish TV channels this past year. DOCVILLE focuses on television made by people with vision and commitment. No neutral reporting or interpretations accompanying the news and no cheap, reality TV-esque emotions. We look for documentaries with true authorship, made with great integrity. The past year, several well-made and high-quality series found their way to the Flemish channels. The DOCVILLE jury will select a winner from these five nominees.
A MATTER OF LUCK Director Kat Steppe Producer Kato Maes Editing Jan Van Der Weken Research team Jan Daneels, Alexandra Lens, Youssef Kobo, Moustafa Benkerroum Stev Vanthielen DOP Kris Vandegoor Sound Koen De Leeuw
Director Kat Steppe offers an honest look at the people of Borgerhout and Antwerp North, two districts where more than 170 nationalities live together in close quarters. The very different characters reflect the diversity of the neighborhood.
MUD Directors Lennart Stuyck, Maarten Bernaerts, Bram Conjaerts, Jeremy De Ryckere, Mathijs Vleugels, Ruben Vermeersch Production Diplodokus
A different type of sports documentary that does not follow the traditional sports greats, but looks for poetry in the sport and for passion in the mud. A production by the young guns of production company Diplodokus.

Few programs in recent years have been this controversial. The Flemish celebrities in this documentary series do not keep it from having serious social relevance. In a confronting and direct way, this program shows its viewers the unfiltered reality of the refugee crisis.
STUFF Directors Guillaume Graux, Jan Antonissen Script Guillaume Graux, Jan Antonissen DOP Grimm Vandekerckhove, Hyun De Grande Sound Kwinten Van Laethem, Pol Vanlaer Production Canvas, Borgerhoff & Lamberigts Editing Guillaume Graux
A visually strong and substantial in-depth look at what drugs does to athletes, physically and mentally. The series goes beyond the media hysteria and the (at times hypocritical) indignation that usually comes with doping cases.

DOCVILLE+ SESSIONS Series of debates
FREE ENTRANCE!
DOCVILLE is more than a series of screenings. The festival is strongly committed to providing context: screenings are initiated or followed by Q&As. The festival regularly organizes DOCVILLE2 activities, in response to a particular film, such as a lecture related to a specific film. The series of debates DOCVILLE + sessions are also part of the program. Each debate is linked to a movie and starts immediately after the screening.
SESSION 1: Is the middle class disappearing? And is this a problem? Sun May 1st, 21:15, Auditorium (STUK)
The rich get richer and the poor get poorer. Income inequality is on the rise everywhere in the Western world, and the middle class is steadily shrinking. Is this evolution problematic? What are the consequences? Could it be that the disappearance of the middle class is deliberate? This debate follows the premiere of Requiem for the American Dream (19:30). See p. 67. Moderator: Xavier Taveirne (Radio 1), Panel: Marc De Vos (Itenera), Chris Serroyen (ACV). Extra names t.b.a.
SESSION 2: Does overpopulation signal our demise? Tue May 3rd, 21:15, Auditorium (STUK)
The problem of overcrowding is a troubling topic for opinion leaders and policy makers worldwide. Potential malnutrition and large refugee flows threaten the existing balances. But are we really doomed? Or are there viable solutions to the major challenges that present themselves? This debate follows the screening of 10 Billion. What's on your plate? (19:15). See p. 38. Moderator: Xavier Taveirne (Radio 1), Panel: prof. dr. Wannes Keulemans (KU Leuven), prof. dr. Jan van Bavel (KU Leuven), Jelle Goossens (Vredeseilanden), Joeri Thijs (Greenpeace)
104
SESSION 3: Does our education system need elite schools? Wed May 4th, 17:00, Auditorium (STUK)
Our society is more diverse and more colored than ever and this has an unmistakable impact on our Flemish education system. Some people want certain segregation, and advocate for the creation of elite schools for the strongest students. Others are convinced that education is the best tool for social integration and that creating elite schools would be a bad evolution. This debate follows the screening of Reach for the Sky. (15:00). See p. 27. Moderator: Nancy Vansieleghem, Panel: prof. em. Roger Standaert (University Ghent), prof. dr. Orhan Agirdag (KU Leuven), Steven Dhoedt (director Reach for the Sky)
SESSION 4: The importance of silence in a world that's getting louder every day? Thu May 5th, 21:15, Auditorium (STUK)
[W]
www.waerbeke.be stilte werkt
Our society is characterized by acceleration, production and consumption in increasingly crowded cities and by ubiquitous technology. Media, advertising, events, music, traďŹƒc and (too) many people in a crowded space render experiencing silence and peace almost impossible. And yet, people’s need for it continues to grow. How do we reconcile the trends in today's society with this ever-growing need? How do we turn crowded cities into livable environments again? And what are we willing to give up for this goal? This debate follows the premiere of In Pursuit of Silence. (19:30). See p. 47. Moderator: Joris Capenberghs, Panel: prof. em. Danny Wildemeersch (KU Leuven), Virginie Platteau (rekto:verso), Eva Berghmans (De Standaard), Dirk Sturtewagen (Waerbeke Foundation)
SESSION 5: Can we deprogram indoctrinated people? Fri May 6th, 21:15, Auditorium (STUK)
Why are people vulnerable to indoctrination by sects and radical groups? What are the strategies used by these groups to recruit members? How do we avoid that people join these groups? Can members be deprogrammed? In this session we look at the psychology of cults and we draw a parallel with the current issue of (de)radicalization. This debate follows the premiere of My Scientology Movie. (19:30). See p. 51. Moderator: Xavier Taveirne, Panel: Olivier Faelens (Study and Advisory Group for Cults), Tim Trachet (SKEPP, VRT), prof. dr. Elisabeth Mareels (UCL)
UNHEARD OF: Degrowth: key task for a new era? Mon May 2, 20:00, Auditorium (STUK)
The Degrowth movement is gaining steam worldwide. For decades, the current focus on economic GDP growth has been leading to rising inequality and environmental damage. And owning more and more things does not make you happy, quite the contrary. The question is how we can de-grow, and work on a different kind of economy that strives for 'better' rather than 'more and faster'. This debate is organized of STUK and is part of the debate series Unheard. At DOCVILLE the film Minimalism - which deals with the same topic - will be screened earlier that day (18:00). See p. 50.

Dalton Distribution viewing day for exhibitors
Dalton Distribution was founded in 2013. It is an independent film distributor, that grew from the film festival DOCVILLE and the Leuven International Short Film Festival. Its main purpose is the distribution of documentary feature films and short films (both separately and in compilations) in theaters, cinemas, film clubs and cultural centers in Flanders and The Netherlands. Documentary cinema has gradually acquired a permanent place in film programming. It is not surprising that especially the exhibitors with a cultural profile (cinemas, cultural centers and community centers) play a key role in this success. That is why DOCVILLE and Dalton Distribution are organizing a viewing day for film programmers so they can be the first to get acquainted with the new titles from the catalogue. A promising national title, The Invisible City [Kakuma] (Lieven Corthouts) and one of the leading international titles this year; My Scientology Movie (Louis Theroux & John Dower) set the tone for the films Dalton has to offer.

SATURDAY MAY 7TH 10:00-17:00
Day of the Doc | Scenario and music Organized by Flanders Doc, in cooperation with Docville and the Director’s Union
The annual meeting of professionals in the author’s documentary genre focuses on two themes this year: scenario and music. 10:00 Music for documentary film Some say that adding music is not done in documentary film. Other filmmakers are happy to use the emotions and feelings music can evoke to strengthen their footage or to add an extra dimension. During this session, filmmakers and musicians discuss how they make and use music and how directors and composers can work together. Documentaries often turn to music that already exists. A song can even end up in the film by accident. An expert talks about how the do’s and don’ts of clearing music. 13:00 Lunch 14:00 Scenario and documentary No one can imagine making a feature film without having a complete scenario to build on. But is this true for the documentary genre too? Are there strict rules? Or is the absence of a complete scenario more common than we think? We ask several filmmakers to give us a peek into their work method and illustrate their methods with scenes. The conclusion at the end of this session might be that we should adopt the Dutch term 'film plan' instead of scenario. Philippe Van Meerbeeck will be our moderator. As a member of the Flemish Audiovisual Fund’s Judging Committee he has looked at countless scenarios and film plans and knows exactly what the relevant issues are. 17:00 Networking drink

VR DOCS
Virtual reality is omnipresent, even at film festivals. And there's a good reason for that: VR is no longer the exclusive new toy of technology geeks and early adopters of this new type of media. More and more movie directors are starting to work with the tool and are exploring its possibilities. For documentary filmmakers, this technology opens up a new world. With VR goggles and headphones viewers find themselves in the middle of a new reality. An intense, breathtaking experience, incomparable to watching a classic screen. DOCVILLE selected a series of strong short documentaries that take you to the other side of the world in a heartbeat. The Virtual Reality program includes four short films. DOCVILLE employees provide, the necessary guidance and context between and after the films. SCREENING: Sat April 30th (15:00 and 17:00), Sun May 1st (13:30, 15:00 and 17:00), Mon May 2nd (16:00, 18:00 and 20:00), Thu May 5th (17:00, 19:00 and 21:00), Fri May 6th (15:00 and 17:00) and Sat May 7th (15:00 and 17:00) in M-Museum Leuven. PRACTICAL: A VR Docs screening lasts for 1 hour. You have to buy a regular ticket for a screening, just like for the other films on the DOCVILLE program. Please note that a show is open to up to a maximum of 15 people. It is advised to purchase your ticket online beforehand. That way you are sure to have a spot.

ABOUT LEUVEN Leuven is a relatively small city (100.000 inhabitants), 20 kilometers near Brussels. Leuven is widely known for two things: it harbours one of the largest and oldest universities in Europe. The KU Leuven was founded in 1425 and has more than 55.000 students today. Leuven is also the hometown of INBEV, the largest brewery in the world, famous for it’s beer Stella Artois (since 1366), one of the best known (and may we add: best tasting) beers. Leuven itself was founded in the 11th century and has a fabulous historic city centre (with the magnificent town hall) and a worldwide known Beguinage (officially recognized as an UNESCO World Heritage site). Due to the creative input of students, it always stayed a vivid, young and creative environment. In a city where the historical buildings are only surpassed by the number of pubs and bars (following our last count: 180, but it’s possible we’ve missed some) there is always something going on. Leuven harbours a series of interesting cultural organisations and events. Besides DOCVILLE there’s also the International Arts Centre STUK (www.stuk.be), the M - Museum, the local cultural center 30CC (www.30CC.be), The Afrika Film Festival (www.afrikafilmfestival.be), the club concerts of Het Depot (www.depot.be), the International Short Film Festival Leuven (www.shortfilmfestival.org) and so on.
THE ROAD TO LEUVEN Leuven is a 20 minute drive from the Brussels National Airport (10 minutes by train). The lowcost airline company, Ryanair, flies to Charleroi or Zaventem from several cities.
BY PLANE
BY TRAIN In Brussels-Midi/zuid trains arrive from every corner of
Europe. If you are coming from London you can take the Eurostar. If you are coming from France, Germany or the Netherlands, you could take a train of the Thalys network. For international timetables, inform with our guest coordinator. BY CAR Leuven is situated close to the A3 (in Belgium called E40) highway between Brussels and Liège (Luik). Coming from the north; follow the A2 (in Belgium called the E314) between Leuven and Genk.
MORE INFORMATION You can find more detailed information about Leuven on the official website of the city (www.leuven.be) or at the Tourist Information Bureau (Naamsestraat 1, 3000 Leuven).
