Belgian selection DOCVILLE presents the ten best Belgian documentaries of the past year. Films that capture special places in our country, such as a small pigsty or an operating room where hypnosis is used, but also films that look beyond national borders and zoom in on, for example, Iceland, Congo, Ireland or Turkey. Documentaries made by familiar faces or by young newcomers. The strongest film will be announced the winner of the Jury Prize for Best Belgian Documentary.
EN My Voice Will Be With You Hypnosis as anesthesia. It not only speaks to our imagination, it is already happening in practice, even in Belgium. We follow two renowned Belgian specialists in surgical hypnosis and are given an insight into their special method in which their voice, together with the power of the imagination, can take patients beyond the operating room and the pain.

Omar Blondin Diop, a Maoist student from Niger, starred in Jean-Luc Godard’s La Chinoise in the 1960s. Fifty years after this almost prophetic cult film, Vincent Meessen supplements the fiction with a film essay. A special reflection on Diop’s life, political activism, unpunished injustice, art and memory, and the evolution of Sino-African relations from Diop’s time to the present.

Heimaland
EN
In the shadow of the Icelandic volcano Katla lies the village of Vík í Myrdal. The villagers have been trying to understand the lurking danger for centuries. Despite signs of increased activity, Katla attracts tourists from all over the world and has become a source of income. This change in the almost mystical relationship between the villagers and the volcano creates friction within the community. Heimaland delves into the ambiguity of a community that, in its quest for wealth, becomes alienated from its own environment. 1h07 - Belgium - 2021 - Director: Dorus Masure, Ischa Clissen - D English, Icelandic – SUBS English – Screening times: Mon 28.03 (8.30 pm) in ZED-Vesalius Is followed by a Q&A with the director.
Is there hope for Congo? For twenty-five years, the Democratic Republic of Congo has been torn apart by a war largely ignored by the media and the international community. What is going on? And is there still hope after more than a quarter of a century of violence?
L’empire du silence The Democratic Republic of Congo has been torn apart for twenty-five years by a war largely ignored by the media and the international community. Award-winning documentary maker Thierry Michel shows the harsh reality of impunity, but also gives a voice to unyielding hope, for instance to doctor Mukwege, winner of the Nobel Peace Prize. A tough, harsh but important documentary. 1u50 - Belgium - 2021 - Director: Thierry Michel - D English, French – SUBS Dutch – Screening times: Sun 27.03 (19u) in Auditorium Vesalius, Wed 30.03 (22u) in ZED-Vesalius The screening on 27.03 is followed by Docville Plus: Is there hope for Congo? Life on endless highways and creepy parking lots is monotonous and hard, but it’s the only chance to give his son a better future. But the toll that Petar and the others have to pay is high. A Parked Life offers a multicolored view of the European continent, from the simmering deserts of Spain to the frozen north of Norway. 1h25 - Belgium - 2022 - Director: Peter Triest - D Bulgarian - SUBS English – Screening times: Sun 27.03 (8 pm) in ZED-Vesalius Is followed by a Q&A with the director and with the protagonist Petar.
New Pigs on the Block

The camera brings us up to eye level with Luc, Mia and Anja and also observes human beings alongside them. Trenches
Trenches and stylized black and white photography. It feels as if we are being catapulted back to the last century, but alas. Since 2014, Ukrainian soldiers have been fighting pro-Russian separatists while diplomats - nowhere near the frontlines - negotiate precarious ceasefires. Experienced war journalist and photographer Loup Bureau spent months documenting life in the Ukrainian trenches just a few miles from their enemy.

The special route that marble takes - from extraction to end product - is surprising and characteristic of today’s global economy. The marble starts out as a rough block and ends up as a Hellenistic sculpture or fridge magnet, from Greece to China and back again. In a playful and ironic way, it hints at the dark sides and absurdism of the global economy, neoliberalism and consumerism. 1h37 - Greece, Netherlands - 2021 - Director: Sean Wang - D Chinese, English, French, Greek – SUBS English – Screening times: Fri 25.03 (5.30 pm), Wed 30.03 (5.30 pm) in ZED-Vesalius

Focus on Philosophy
Is there a word that conveys a more beautiful ambition than the word philosophy? The desire of wisdom. Philosophy is the comprehensive study of the meaning of the most universal aspects of existence and of the validity of our thinking about them. Forget the cliche of abstract topics for crusty professors. These questions have a real link to our daily lives, now and in the future. Leave it to DOCVILLE to find special documentaries about philosophy that will leave you feeling inspired.
Does free will exist?
Future Shocked In recent years, moral rules have evolved at a remarkable speed. There are heated social debates around themes such as gender, climate and race. Activists are running ahead, others are pushing the brakes in response. Whipped into a frenzy by social media, polarization is taking on unprecedented forms. What’s going on here? And how do we quickly achieve the necessary progress in this tense situation? 2h00 - Belgium - 2021 - Director: Johan Van Schaeren - D Dutch, English SUBS Dutch Screening times: Thu 24.03 (6 pm) in 30CC/Wagehuys

For 2,500 years, philosophers have been wondering if free will exists. Over time, numerous arguments were developed for and against. Are we really free in our thoughts and actions? And what are the consequences if the answer is not unequivocally yes? In this debate, philosophers look at the arguments presented in the documentary and offer their own views on this problem. Round table with Prof. Stefaan Cuypers (KU Leuven), Benjamin De Mesel (KU Leuven), Jan Verplaetse (UGent). Moderated by Prof. Filip Buekens (KU Leuven) Tuesday March 29 - 10.15 pm Following the film Free Will (8.15 pm)

Oliver Sacks: His Own Life The endearing, unconventional and brilliant scientist Oliver Sacks is known to the general public for the film adaptation of one of his most famous books, Awakenings. He was an outsider in his field, but also in his life he colored outside the lines. A moving and ver y fascinating portrait of and about the world’s most famous neurologist’s adventurous life. 1h34 - United States - 2021 - Director: Ric Burns - D English – SUBS Dutch – Screening times: Fri 25.03 (7.30 pm), Sat 26.03 (9.45 pm) in ZED-Vesalius, Tue 29.03 (8 pm) in Kinepolis The screening on 29.03 is followed by a Q&A with Pieter Adriaens (professor philosophy KU Leuven and a big fan of Oliver Sacks).

Holy Cross Boys Primary School is located in the heart of Ardoyne, a residential area of Belfast with a somewhat dodgy reputation. Drugs, crime and relentless sectarian violence manifest themselves in the knife, gun, and petrol bomb - certainly not a place to raise children. Yet eccentric school principal Kevin McArevey and his dedicated, visionary team are convinced they can turn the tide with… philosophy! Armed with the wisdom of the old masters, the children question their parents’ entrenched prejudices. 1h42 - Ireland - 2021 - Director: Neasa Ni Chianain, Declan McGrath - D English – SUBS Dutch, English – Screening times: Thu 24.03 (8.15 pm) in ZED-Vesalius, Sun 27.03 (2 pm) in 30CC/Wagehuys, Wed 30.03 (2 pm) in ZED-Vesalius The screening on 24.03 is followed by a Q&A with the director. Free Will?
EN
“We are free to determine what we do and who we are”. The concept of free will is perhaps the most fundamental in our understanding of who we are as humans. However, this idea has been debated since ancient times and contemporary insights are downright sobering. Are we really free in our thoughts and actions? And what are the consequences if the answer to this question is not unequivocally yes? Special: Slavoj Žižek EN The Pervert’s Guide to Ideology Are ideologies just fantasies that we allow to have a concrete impact on our societ y? How are they promoted or undermined in largescale films or other forms of popular culture? In this follow-up to The Pervert’s Guide to Cinema, Žižek uses his inventive interpretation of film history to reflect on ideologies. A unique speech that is both hilarious and deep. 2h14 - United Kingdom, Ireland - 2012 - Director: Sophie Fiennes - D English – Screening times: Wed 23.03 (8 pm) in Auditorium Vesalius, Sun 27.03 (10 am) in ZED-Vesalius
Slavoj Žižek, pseudo philosopher? Slavoj Žižek is a philosophical rock star who, with the help of Hermetic philosophers such as Jacques Lacan and W.F. Hegel, tries to understand the world. His influence on the Humanities and Cultural Studies is immense. Institutionally he certainly belongs to philosophy, but should we take this man seriously? And does he take himself seriously?

Antigone, How Dare We!
EN
Which laws are the most important? State laws or moral rules? The figure of Antigone has, since ancient times, represented the moral resistance of the individual against the unshakable state apparatus that does not participate in ethics. This documentary combines images of recent political events with Žižek’s very own way of thinking. Is today’s Antigone pe r sonif ied by the populist, anti-migration politicians, or by those who oppose them? Who plays which role in the “Greek tragedy” that we are currently undergoing? 1h10 - Slovenia - 2020 - Director: Jani Sever - D English, Slovenian – SUBS English – Screening times: Sat 26.03 (5.30 pm), Tue 29.03 (1.30 pm) in ZED-Vesalius The screening on 26.03 is followed by a Q&A with the director.

Based on these photos, the director tells the history of his city, his own story and that of his impressive archive. A playful film essay in which a news junkie pays tribute to a time when news reports had not yet been devalued into fleeting snapshots of time. 1h28 - United States - 2019 Director: Alan Berliner - D English – Screening times: Thu 24.03 (5.30 pm), Tue 29.03 (7.30 pm), Thu 31.03 (10.30 pm) in ZED-Vesalius
The Maelstrom: A Family Chronicle
EN
1942. A family sits gloomily at the table, in semi-darkness. The women mend clothes, their suitcases ready in the background. It is not the opening scene of a fiction film, but an amateur film of the Peereboom family, a Dutch-Jewish family that continued to film until the night before they were deported. The tragedy of the Second World War told through family films that - with the knowledge of what is about to happen in mind - strike you in the heart. 1h00 - Netherlands - 1997 - Director: Péter Forgács - D Dutch – SUBS English – Screening times: Thu 31.03 (11.30 am) in ZED-Vesalius

Outside the Dox River
Rivers are the arteries of our planet, they are crucial to our planet and to human history. Over time, rivers have shaped our landscapes and our culture. With extraordinary cinematography and an impressive soundtrack, this film shows rivers from new and unique perspectives. A musical and cinematographic ode to their strength, diversity, transformative capacity and indispensability for us as human beings.
Outside the Dox is home to a wide array of documentaries that deviate from the classic approach. Colorful films that experiment with form or content, broadening and enriching the genre. There are non-narrative films that immerse viewers in a special universe, be it a cowshed or a Russian subway. There are also very creative films that make you think about bigger issues like capitalism in China or the alarming militarization of the US security forces.
Where Are We Headed?

A special road movie shot entirely in the Moscow metro and filmed over an entire year. A documentary film that observes cultural and social issues in contemporary Russia in an original way. The often richly decorated metro stations are the perfect backdrop for the theatre of everyday life, with the most diverse characters and its big and small dramas. 1h03 - Belarus, Russia - 2021 - Director: Ruslan Fedotov - D Russian – SUBS English – Screening times: Fri 25.03 (8 pm) in Kinepolis, Sat 26.03 (10 pm) in ZED-Vesalius

Cow
EN
For four years, Oscar winning director Andrea Arnold filmed dairy cow Luma and looked at the world from her point of view. It brings animals we rarely think about so close - literally and figuratively - that it becomes a unique encounter, a true insight into their consciousness. Not a romanticized Disney version, but a lifelike introduction to the reality of the dairy cow, with both the beauty and the challenges of their lives. 1h31 - United Kingdom - 2021 - Director: Andrea Arnold - D English – Screening times: Wed 23.03 (8 pm), Sun 27.03 (10 pm) in ZED-Vesalius

Riotsville USA
Welcome to Riotsville, a model town built by the US military to train troops in handling major riots on their own soil. Why are these towns being built? Are your fellow citizens the enemy? Why the need to militarize the police like this? This unique film - built entirely from archive material - offers the sobering answer. 1h31 - United States - 2022 - Director: Sierra Pettengill - D English – Screening times: Fri 25.03 (1.30 pm), Wed 30.03 (10 pm) in ZED-Vesalius

Ascension This Oscar nominated documentary explores the paradox that characterizes contemporary China: a communist country that plays the capitalism card like no other. The rise in prosperity in recent decades has been so enormous that the regime likes to flaunt ‘the Chinese dream’. Forget the US, China is now the country where anyone can strike gold and which takes a global leadership position. An impressionistic portrait of the various shapes of the Chinese dream. 1h37 - VS - 2021 - Director: Jessica Kingdon - D Chinese SUBS English Screening times: Wed 23.03 (8 pm), Fri 25.03 (3.30 pm), Thu 31.03 (10.45 pm) in ZED-Vesalius
