Welcome!
Returning home
For its 29th edition, Kortfilmfestival Leuven once again returns to arts center STUK. From 24 November to 2 December, STUK will host Belgium's biggest short film festival. Out of a record-breaking 3,240 submissions from 93 different countries, the festival has chosen the best short films and curated them into custom made programmes. To return home, the festival presents several premiers to broaden the Flemish and European Competition, the heart of the festival.
Race to the Oscars
Alongside the audience award, a new jury award has been introduced for Flemish animated short films. On top of that, there is a new award: the Best Flemish Short Film award. This one will be awarded to the best Flemish short documentary, animation film or live action fiction film. The winner automatically earns a place on the longlist of the Oscars for best short film. It is the first time that Flemish short documentaries and animated films are also taken into consideration.
Austria, the climate, and space
Explore the diverse world of short films with us. Beyond the competitions, we curate thematic compilations, and this year we are shining a spotlight on Austria and present themed programmes on climate change and space. Our 'Artist in Focus' is none other than Tim Mielants, the mind behind the recent hit film Wil. He kickstarted his career with short films, following in the footsteps of industry giants like Martin Scorsese, Justine Triet, and Yorgos Lanthimos. Discover their early short films in Big Names, Short Films.
Finally, there will be plenty of additional activities, such as a virtual reality installation, Labo, short films for children, professional activities and talks with directors. All this as a festive framework for a thrilling journey of discovery along tomorrow's cinematic talent: welcome to Kortfilmfestival Leuven!

Competition & Award Ceremony
At Kortfilmfestival Leuven, numerous prizes are being awarded. Most films in the Flemish and European Competitions have the chance to win both audience and jury awards. However, there is more: winning the award for Best Short Film also earns the winner a coveted spot on the Oscars' longlist. The award is Academy Award® Qualifying after all. In the past, only live action fiction films in the Flemish Competition had a shot of getting on the longlist. However, with the introduction of the new jury award for Best Flemish Short Film, short Flemish documentaries and animated films also stand a chance. The same is true for the European jury award. In addition, one lucky film from the European competition secures a spot at the European Film Awards, as determined by our festival jury.
The Peer Award is back for the fourth time this year. Filmmakers will once again have the chance to view and evaluate each other's creations. The winner secures a spot on the jury for next year's festival.
In addition to the jury and audience awards for best short film, the Flemish Competition boasts a multitude of other awards, including distinctions for the best cinematography, best debut, outstanding acting, the Humo Award, and the Press Award presented by the UBFP and UFK.
Finally, Kortfilmfestival Leuven will host the annual Pitch Your Script Award. The extremely coveted VAF Wildcards are also handed out at our festival. The latter are awarded during the festival’s first weekend, allowing the winners’ films to be screened afterwards. As the festival draws to a close on 2 December, the other awards will be handed out.

BlackVirtual Reality: Floating with Spirits
Juanita Onzaga is anything but unknown for Kortfilmfestival Leuven. In 2016, she received the VAF Wildcard for her graduation film The Jungle Knows You Better Than You Do before winning the jury prize for best short documentary in 2018 with Our Song to War, which premiered at the Cannes Film Festival. During this edition, Juanita Onzaga proves that the sky really is the limit, with Floating With Spirits. VR films can completely immerse you in another world: that of the past, the future or the present. This is once again evident in the VR installation Floating With Spirits. You are taken to southern Mexico, where the Mazatec community is celebrating the Day of the Dead. In the 360° around you, you encounter nature spirits and ancestors. You ascend, but the landing is soft.

As a result, they rightly went home with the jury prize for Best European Short Film.

In collaboration with the European Network for Film Discourse (END) and the magazine Talking Shorts, the festival hosts a four-day workshop on film criticism. Participants are guided by established critics and film scholars, gaining insights into the essential skills and practices of film criticism through short films. In 2024, the second part of the workshop will take place at the Vilnius International Short Film Festival. The results of the workshops will be published in Talking Shorts.
