Half Moon Townhouse Meeting new roommates is a fun part of life. Some find their roommates to be too distant while some people find the lack of privacy to be the biggest challenge. With that in mind, I wanted to create a pleasant and relaxing environment even for strangers. Half Moon Townhouse is a live and work residence that holds a 180 m2 vintage clothing store featuring a courtyard because not only does it provide ventilation and natural lighting for this narrow site, it also helps bringing the programming and residents closer together. Through constant visual connection of the glazed inner courtyard, residents have the option to feel connected with each other while maintaining privacy. Overall, Half Moon Townhouse is a residence that focuses on fostering a close relationship between the people and programs.

A full moon is just like a relationship between two individuals. It is everchanging and mysterious, yet expansive and fruitful. Each resident is represented by a half moon. When they meet another resident, the moon changes phase and grows into one full moon. Likewise, each customer to the store is represented by a half moon. When they fall in love with one of our vintage items in store, it’s as if they’ve found the other half of the moon, ultimately blossoming into a beautiful full moon.

3rd Floor Bedroom #1

The master bedroom features a washroom that has visual connection to the balcony. Resident can place plants and or other relaxing elements to create their own little private bathtime paradise, while being protected by the transluscnet brick wall.

Since the master bedroom is located on the north side, it features a full height glazing as well as a skylight to maximize optimal natural lighting, while the translucent concrete brick wall blurs the visibility and acts as a privacy barrier for the resident.

COURSE : ASC 720 STUDY ABROAD CHINA STUDIO

Through the integration of traditional ‘Hui’ and Chinese architecture values and elements with contemporary design, the Yu Village provides a unique space for community gathering, learning, socializing, working and living. Public, semi-public and private spaces are generated to adapt to the various programmatic needs. The design respects site by locating program appropriately, in order to maximize views of the environment. Several exterior spaces and pavilions are provided to allow for visitors and residents to experience the natural environment.

Store Signage with Weathering Steel to create a naturally oxidizing finish for vintage look

Live + Work in Tokyo From its innovative technological excellence, to its humble and intricate traditional wooden architecture. Tokyo is the city where ancient and modern meets. I’ve chosen a vintage toy store as the commercial component of the townhouse because I believe play is something that never gets old. No matter what your age, playing with toys will inevitably be a fun experience. Ultimately, I wanted to create a store that connects both young and old age groups of this vibrant city. Throughout my spaces, I emphasized the idea of play through the usage of ladders and mixed height levels of spatial programming. This encourages the users to climb up and down, just like the classic board game of snakes and ladders. In terms of functionality, the various different levels of height enable the space to feel larger and connected to one another. The atrium at the lounge area and roof skylights allows maximum amounts of natural lighting to shine into every corner of the building. Overall, the design aims to bring playfulness into visitors’ lives and remind people of good old childhood days. You can never be too old to have fun.

My building form is slightly recessed onto the right side to allow visitors to enter and exit the store safely without worrying about vehicular dangers on the street level. Also, this set back allows for the storefront to become emphasized, while the residence entrance maintains a higher level of privacy. Material Palette

Solar Panels The site recieves abundance of sunlight throughout the year. Hence, I’ve placed solar panels on the roof to help supply electricity.

South Facing Windows This can help maximize natural lighting and direct sunlight during winter for this small site, while our neighbours provide shade on west and east side.

Cross Ventilation To help reduce the need of air conditioning, I’ve placed automatically opening windows on both N and S to enable cross ventilation. It brings in fresh air and creates a visual connection from the streetscape to the back of the site.

Rainwater Harvesting It is crucial for tokyo houses to include rainwater harvesting since tokyo has many rainy seasons. The collected water will be recycled and reused in the building.

Skylights This allows natural lighting to shine into the building, and thus creating a welcoming and lively space as residents circulate through the building. It also allows them to enjoy the night sky before they sleep.

The Dun is a children’s chair mindfully designed for the assembly and use of kids, ages 8-12. The main goals for this design were to create a unique chair with minimal pieces, ease of assembly/ disassembly and customization opportunities. The Dun follows the characteristics of a traditional chair but modernizes it through the use of kerfing, which allows for the creation of two main pieces that combine multiple elements of the traditional chair. One pieces connects the rear legs, seating and backing of chair through a flexible piece while the other combines the arm rest and front legs into one singular piece. These two pieces interlock nicely together to create a sense of fluidity and unity. The Dun can be used in a variety of environments such as classrooms, community centres, bedrooms, playroom and many other.

From taking care of your plants using the peg board, to multiple customized sensory walls and an observation dock, the Kingdom playhouse is a retreat area for children that aims to provide various play options to accommodate different hobbies and explorations. Some activities are challenging, while some are more calm and gentle. I hope my design can stimulate different fields of development for the young users. During 2018 February, I had the opportunity to work as an architecture intern at ArchiPlus International Limited. This Hong Kong based architecture firm develops projects with many complexities for an international client base. Although I only worked for 4 weeks, I was able to experience and contribute in 3 residential projects, ranging from high rise to luxury house. My major tasks include 3D modelling conceptual designs, photoshopping landscapes for floor plans, and rendering draft perspective views, as well as creating diagrams and organizing presentation powerpoints.

I also prepared biweekly client presentations which require updated renderings, presentational plans, updated room schedules, and layout. For the cultural hub project, I was in charge of furniture placing and interior design of the exchange (gathering space) and some classrooms. As well as assiting senior architects with room schedules and renderings for client meetings. The firm also encourages project teams to create physical models to help portray the architectural story, so I often prepared lasercut files, 3D print files, and helped create physical models for my project teams. Moreover, I initiated and organized a fundraiser within the firm to help raise money for Canada food bank.

After I graduated from architecture school, I was extremely exhausted so I decided to take a short break before I find a full time job. I wanted to do something that makes me happy, so I thought why not getting back into childhood hobbies? I decided to try air dry clay for fun and within 2 weeks, I created most of the characters from my favourite cartoon. I had so much fun. But then I found a job and started working non-stop again. Two years later, I moved back to Hong Kong. I thought it was a good time to take a short break again due to covid. I decided to stay home and work on this hobby. Thanks to support from my family and friends, I finally have enough courage to start posting about my little creations on social media. I even opened an Etsy shop, hoping to bring joy to others through my little creations.

Open air, the sacred plane sits in the middle of an open field. The concept of the sacred plane is a metaphoric “tabula rasa”, a blank slate. Those who come in to reflect, to pray and to find peace leave with an open and clear state of mind. Slightly, immersed into the earth, the sacred ground is responsive to the climatic changes of Senegal. During the drought seasons, the rammed earth landscaping is exposed. Visitors travel across the landscape towards a bamboo alter which is oriented towards Mecca. The bamboo structures connects the ground and reaches to the sky allowing a divine connection from earth to sky. During the flood season, water is collected at different levels allowing for an alternative experience where worshippers proceed over a layer of water in order to reach the alter. The drainage paths also harvests the rainwater into a cistern where it supplies water back to the villagers. Other than the orientation to Mecca for the large Islamic population, the design remains minimal and free of other religious illusions to provide a sacred space for all.
