ROSTERS and SCHEDULES INSIDE

CARDINAL The Cardinal Local School District takes great pride in providing students with a variety of academic programs designed to prepare them for the future. Ultimately, these programs will lead to college admission, industry certification, and a future career path. We also take great pride in the fact that our academic programs are supplemented by outstanding athletic opportunities. As a small rural school district, our students benefit from the opportunity to participate in junior varsity and varsity sports. Due to the size of our district, we are able to provide our students with opportunities that students in a larger setting would not be able to enjoy. We boast many students that participate and excel in two or three sports. It is our hope that our student athletes will excel in the classroom and on the athletic fields so that we may honor them in the future as a member of the Distinguished Alumni and Athletic Hall of Fame. Come out and support our student athletes as they compete in their respective sports this year! Go Huskies! Dr. Scott J. Hunt, Superintendent

Superintendent: Dr. Scott Hunt Success. That is the ultimate goal here in the Cardinal Local School District. By far, our number one priority is the learning that occurs inside the classroom, but interscholastic, athletic competition is an important extension of that learning. In the athletic department, the victory is measured not by the final score, but by how well we help educate, prepare, and enhance the skills our student athletes need to become successful in life. By participating in interscholastic activities, our student-athletes learn much more than how to play their particular sport. They learn about making commitments and the accountability that is necessary to see those commitments through to their conclusion. They learn about the value of hard work and how to work with others in pursuit of worthy objectives. They learn how to overcome difficulties and to persist through adversity. Ultimately, they learn the “grit that is necessary to achieve success in any undertaking. Through their participation in interscholastic athletics, we hope that our students learn to embrace our core values of:

Athletic Director: Jimmy Soltis

1. Commitment 2. Responsibility & Accountability 3. Tenacity 4. Integrity 5. Unity (teamwork) Athletic competition requires participants to reach for the best within themselves, to push through adversity, and to learn how to respond to the circumstances of life. We are successful when we become the best of which we are capable of becoming. We are excited about the winter 2017 season and hope you will join us in supporting the efforts and achievements of our student-athletes. Sincerely, Jimmy Soltis, Athletic Director

BASKETBALL The Boys basketball team is returning seven players from the 2016 Varsity team, all five starters. We are a very balanced team with size and athleticism. Athleticism is our biggest strength this season. With the versatile players we have at all five positions, our team will be able to compete with any team on this year’s schedule. Eight of the 10 varsity players also played on the football team, so that should translate into a more physical team as well, giving us a great opportunity to compete for the CVC Championship this season. This team will be a lot of fun to watch and I look forward to seeing what we can accomplish this season. ~ Jon Cummins

BASKETBALL I am extremely encouraged about our chances to compete for the CVC title this year thanks to our team’s focus on building up our defense. Outscoring and out defending our opponents will be the key to our success this season. Depth will also be an advantage for our team this season as we expect to have at least nine girls on our roster, including three of the top five leading scorers from last season in Hanna Traggiai, Ashley Gubanyar, and Camille Cummins. Juniors Brittni Lawrence and Adriana Naples will round out the starting five. We are excited to have Senior Virginia Travers back this year after missing last season with an injury. Juniors Annamarie Pollack and Sydney Hahner, along with sophomore Abby Geesling will move up from JV and will contribute nicely to this year’s varsity efforts. ~ Luke Kruse

Fan Fair Play Code

• I will remember that young people play sports for THEIR enjoyment. • I will have realistic expectations and will understand that doing one’s best is just as important as winning. I understand that ridiculing an athlete for making a mistake is not acceptable behavior. • I will respect the official’s decisions and will encourage others do the same. • I will respect and show appreciation for the coaches and understand that they have given their time to provide sport activities for our young people. • I will encourage athletes and coaches to play by the rules and to resolve conflicts without resorting to hostility or violence. • I will show respect for my team’s opponents because I realize there would be no game without them. • I will not use bad language and will not harass athletes, coaches, officials or other spectators. • I will always show good sportsmanship. Young people learn by example.

The OHSAA Believes That…

• Participation in interscholastic athletics programs is a privilege, not a right. • Participation in interscholastic athletics programs complements a student’s school experience and teaches lifelong lessons of hard work, teamwork and self-discipline. • Participation in interscholastic athletics programs promotes citizenship and sporting behavior, instills a sense of community and promotes a lifetime appreciation for sports and healthy lifestyles. • All students, regardless of ethnicity, race or gender, should have an equal opportunity to participate in interscholastic athletics programs. • Sporting and ethical behavior are expectations in interscholastic athletics by all participants, coaches, administrators, officials and spectators. • Coaches, administrators and contest officials should serve as positive role models who are critical to a student’s development and success. • In order to minimize health and safety risks and maintain ethical standards, it is mandatory that interscholastic athletics participants are free from use of anabolic steroids or other performance-enhancing drugs. • All rules, regulations and facilities for and supervision of interscholastic athletics programs should ensure maximum protection of the health, safety and well-being of each participant. • Limitations should be placed upon the length of sport seasons and the number of interscholastic contests played by participants. • Students should engage in a well-rounded experience that encourages participation in a multitude of extracurricular activities. • All attempts should be made to accommodate students with disabilities in interscholastic athletics programs. • Compliance with all school, OHSAA and state regulations along with contest playing rules is essential for everyone involved in interscholastic athletics programs. • Student academic achievement and success take priority over athletics achievement and success. • The success of a team is more important than individual awards. • Interscholastic athletics programs exist to prepare students for the next level of life, not the next level of sports.
