Discover My Cleveland One Year Anniversary

t has been one year since we have truly “broadened our horizons.” After 10 years of promoting tourism in Geauga County, our responsibilities have grown to all of northeast Ohio.

In June of 2017 Pegi Dickson and I purchased the company Discover My Cleveland, a Destination Marketing Company that promotes the area and helps people plan their tours, off-site meetings, conventions, and special events in Northeast Ohio, specifically around the Cleveland area. In the past year we have worked with everything from small family groups to corporate outings, student groups passing through Ohio, to conventions for several hundred. Every day is an adventure!

In our spare time we run ‘FuN bUs’ tours which leave from Chardon giving our Geauga County family and friends the opportunity to come and explore Cleveland with us. Our next adventure will take us to a couple of iconic Christmas locations. We will celebrate Christmas in July, visiting amazing displays of Christmases gone by at Castle Noel, enjoy lunch in an historic Inn, and, of course, visiting the Christmas Story house and see how this movie transformed an entire neighborhood. In August, we will be setting sail for summer fun on the Nautica Queen, and getting a bird’s eye view of the city from the observation deck of Tower City. These are our favorite adventures, the ones that we share with our Geauga County community.

Huntsburg Historical Society

T

he Huntsburg Historical Society is a 501(c)3 public charity devoted to preserving the rich history of Huntsburg Township. The Society has established a large museum in the old Huntsburg School at the center of town, thanks to the generosity of the Township Trustees. The public is always welcome to visit our museums. The museum houses numerous old photographs of early Huntsburg scenes and citizens dating back to the beginnings of photography in the 1800s. Early 1800s furniture is also prominently displayed.

about 1805. Portraits of Dr. Ebenezer Hunt and his youngest son, Lewis Hunt, are on display. Lewis Hunt first came to Huntsburg in 1817 as the sole heir to his father’s lands in the Connecticut Western Reserve. He was one of only several organizers of the Geauga County Agricultural Society which first established what is now known as the Geauga County Fair. Lewis died suddenly at age 49 in Huntsburg on May 11, 1833 and is buried in the Pioneer Cemetery.

Huntsburg, or rather Township 8, 6th Range, Connecticut Western Reserve, was purchased by Robert Breck and Dr. Ebenezer Hunt of Northampton, Mass. from the Connecticut Land Company on April 22, 1799. These two wealthy investors split the 100 Parcels (quarter sections) of land between them in a checkerboard like manner. The earliest Township map (dated approximately 1805) known to date is that of General Simon Perkins showing the 100 quarter sections and the assignment of them to Hunt and to Breck. The 100 parcels were sold individually by Hunt and Breck and their heirs most all of which had been sold by the beginning of the Civil War. The Township had several merchants at the Center including two grocery stores and a hardware. The first viable buhr stone grain mill was established by William Reed starting in about 1815 who was under contract with Hunt and Breck to do so.

Several cheese factories were established in the Township over the last two centuries.

The Township has two cemeteries: one at the Center and one a half mile south known as Pioneer Cemetery. These cemeteries contain three Revolutionary Patriots, seven known War of 1812 veterans, and some 60 Civil War soldiers in addition to more modern veterans. The Huntsburg Historical Society is actively engaged in preserving the memories and gravesites of the many veterans who are buried in these two cemeteries. Huntsburg citizens were actively involved in the Underground Railroad. One family in particular, the Lyman Millards, were instrumental in helping escaped slaves on their way north to Canada.

erryfield Electric has had the pleasure of serving the community for over 79 years.

Many people do not know that we have a very nice and well-stocked storefront open to the public at 14915 Madison Road in Middlefield.

We are mainly commercial electricians but we try to help anyone we can with our knowledge. Our staff has been with the company for many years. Having a good working environment has contributed to the success of Merryfield Electric, keeping employees for such a long time. We continue to expand and grow and we pride ourselves in service and encourage the community to shop small business vs. the big box stores.

Merryfield Electric transitioned when Martin “Sonny” Merryfield handed over the responsibilities to his son, Mark Merryfield, making him the third generation running Merryfield Electric. Mark has made some very good improvements, such as adding a line of Kohler Whole House generators and a line of Firman portable generators at very competitive prices. We have all the generators on display in our storefront. Please stop in and take a look at what we have to offer. We are proud to be certified Kohler installers.

Our vice president, Don Olmstead, also works the storefront and has been with the company for 30 years. Don is always going the extra mile to help his customers which keeps them coming back. If we do not have an item, we try our best to get it ordered and in house in a timely manner. We have many suppliers that we have worked with for many years and they are always willing to go the extra mile to make sure we have everything we need to keep our customers happy. Our staff of electricians is very well trained and conducts business in a very professional manner.

In December, we lost our beloved co-owner, Hope Merryfield, after over 60 years of service. We miss her very much.

eauga Growth Partnership (GGP) holds business growth at the center of its mission and has recently entered into an agreement with Greater Cleveland Partnership (GCP) that will enhance its ability to provide outreach and services to Geauga businesses.

As a result of this partnership with GCP, GGP will be able to enhance business retention and expansion (BRE) visitation, with the intention of making area businesses aware of programs and services available to help expand operations, address workforce issues, and learn about offerings provided through GGP and JobsOhio. Through this collaboration, GGP will more than double their annual company visits, targeting 40 calls in 2018. The GGP team consists of GGP president Tracy Jemison, and GGP’s BRE representative Stuart Miller.

Mr. Jemison, president of Geauga Growth Partnership, is a founding member of the organization, which was established by a group of business leaders in 2010 to enhance Geauga’s economic development. Stuart Miller is a Geauga native, a graduate of Chardon High School, with a Bachelor of Arts from Malone University in Canton. He lives in Chardon with his wife Julie. “We greatly appreciate our partnership with GCP and leveraging ways to grow our businesses in Geauga County,” says Mr. Jemison. “We are also pleased to have the support of Stuart Miller, who is well acquainted with Geauga County and it business needs.”

GCP serves as the lead local partner for JobsOhio in the Cleveland Area defined as Cuyahoga, Lake and Geauga counties. Why I Love Geauga County

y family came to Geauga County 54 years ago this August. I was 7 years old and went to the Great Geauga County Fair for the first time. I was hooked, life could be no better.

As I grew up and things change, that never did. I worked all summer with my Mother in our garden to raise money for the fair each year. Then I joined 4H horse club, and again at the end of the summer spent a week at the County Fair.

As we worked and lived on the farm tending crops and taking care of the farm animals, which amounted to way too many, my mother worked at home and did volunteer work at the local hospital, now University Hospital. My father became a farrier, that is someone who trims the hoofs and shoes horses. He went to farrier school and got expert advice from Levi Miller, whose Amish family became best friends with ours. Years later my parents started their at home on the road business. This is how Country Arts & Jewelry was born. We started small, going to fairs, flea markets and specialty shows for many years. Only open a short time at the Aurora Flea Market, we moved to Middlefield Market now known as Heritage Marketplace back in the 90s.

We have enjoyed the time, friends and customers we have met over the last 30 some years. When customers ask us, “Why are you out here in the country, you should be at the mall,” I smile and ask why. Destination Geauga Destination Geauga is a membership organization whose mission is to promote Geauga County and its businesses as a tourist destination. It is overseen by a board of trustees, who are also members of the organization, and are elected to three-year terms at the Destination Geauga annual meeting. Together with the office staff, they work to market the rural charm of Geauga County throughout the region and the state.

Destination Geauga holds several events and publications to promote tourism in Geauga County. The annual visitor guide highlights Geauga business and attractions and is distributed statewide. obert “Bob” Baker has been the branch manager of the Huntington National Bank at 14849 N. State Ave. in Middlefield for the past 10 years. He’s been in the banking business since 1995, with experience at Chase Bank and HSBC. Baker grew up in Madison and, except for his four years at Mount Union College, has lived there all his life. Bob and his wife, Lisa, have been married 29 years and they raised two sons. Brandon is a paramedic and Tyler is attending college and working part time.

p e n enrollment is happening now for businesses who want to become a part of Geauga Safety Council, a group designed to promote strategies to increase safety and health in both the workplace and the community.

Members have successfully reduced their workplace injuries, workers’ compensation claims and premium rates. There are no dues and no enrollment fees and membership is open to manufacturing and industrial companies, school systems, townships and municipalities, as well as non-profit and self-insured companies.

The Geauga Safety Council is a nonprofit organization established in July

of 2006, sponsored by the Ohio Bureau of Workers’ Compensation and the Middlefield Chamber of Commerce. In addition to receiving critical information to make a safer workplace, companies are rewarded for learning by obtain a rebate when meeting the eligibility requirements and certain performance benchmarks. To be eligible for the BWC Incentive Program, new members must complete and submit an enrollment form before July 31 for the Fiscal Year of July 1 to June 30.

Businesses are encouraged to send employees who will benefit from information that helps them perform their jobs with a better understanding of the safety and health issues that impacts employees every day.

Meetings are held the first Friday of each month at the Huntsburg Community Center, 12406 Madison Road. Registration begins at 11:15 a.m. and the luncheon meeting starts at 11:30 a.m. Cost is $20 for members and $25 for non-members.

Meeting topics pertain to occupational safety and health, risk management, workers’ compensation, BWC services, rehabilitation and environmental issues. A BWC representative is at every meeting to offer assistance and answer questions.

Middlefield Market, Now Heritage Marketplace!

hat has been known as the Middlefield Market for years is in the process of being revised and renewed to a new and exciting market place. This huge complex, located at 15848 Nauvoo Road, is under new ownership and has the new name, Heritage Marketplace. There are five partners sharing the proprietorship of this venture and they are looking forward to creating an updated center for commerce and events.

The group has big plans for the complex and they are pleased to announce that current tenants Country Collections, Country Arts and Jewelry, JMJ Stoves, Penny Pincher and Rustic Rewind will remain. The flea market building will be occupied by a variety of different retail stores. Pine Craft Storage Barns will build a new facility in the east parking lot and relocate from its current location on Route 528. They are hoping to be in full production sometime in August.

The Pavilion building will continue to be used for any kind of auctions, benefits and fundraisers. It is also used every Monday for flea market vendors. The flea market is becoming a bigger success every week. Look for the Monday line auction to commence once again.

The Farmer’s Grill has also revised its menu and is open every Monday from 7 a.m. to noon, serving breakfast from 7 a.m. to 10 a.m. Farmer’s Grill also caters events.

Sheoga Hardwood Flooring

heoga Hardwood Flooring was founded in 1982. The flooring company began as an off-shoot of the Hardwood Lumber Company from Station Road in Burton. Stephen Trudick and his wife Lee worked hard to cultivate a lumberyard and sawmill for the local community. In the early 80s, they recognized the need for a quality flooring producer and decided to expand their business. Steve asked Pete Miller to head the new company and sold shares to raise capital for equipment. In 1994, a new manufacturing facility was built on Burton-Windsor Road, including 4,000 square feet of showrooms and offices and 30,000 square feet of manufacturing space.

By then, sales were expanding throughout the US and the international division had opened relationships in the Czech Republic and Singapore.

Many expansions and equipment purchases have occurred in the last 36 years, with the Sheoga team expanding to 76 individuals from the local communities.

We are blessed to source our lumber from many local sawmills who are harvesting lumber from the Appalachian regions – places were forests are sustainable and their growth outweighs the losses from harvesting, fires and natural death. We are one of only six companies in the US certified under the NWFA RPP (National Wood Flooring Association’s Responsible Procurement Program) guidelines and FSC® Certified and we are audited annually by a

third-party to ensure compliance. We are committed to a program that preserves our forests for future generations.

Operations expanded in 2013 to include a second manufacturing facility and we added a new product line of ¾” engineered flooring. This flooring utilizes a cross-grain plywood substrate with a thick veneer to enable glue-down applications on concrete and for homes situated in very highor very low-humidity environments. The 5.25mm thick veneer enables the flooring to be sanded and re-finished multiple times during the lifetime in your home. All Sheoga flooring is available in Unfinished or Prefinished styles, with the options of various textures and stains/finishes.
