What’s Inside?
Huskie Pride!
The HUSKIE REPORT By Dr. Scott J. Hunt, superintendent Wrapping up the year! Our students are ready for the summer months as the last day of school for K - 11th graders is May 25! Even more exciting is that we graduated another class of Cardinal Huskies on Saturday, May 19. Ninety-two students are now embarking on a journey into the next phase of their lives. Some will step right into a career path, others will attend a two-year or four-year college or university, some will serve our country. One thing that they will have in common is that they will bring with them the memory of the time spent here at Cardinal. Congratulations to those who have met this benchmark and earned their rite of passage. We wish them the best of luck in the future.
Current and Summer Projects There are many things to be excited for this summer at Cardinal. Our ability to place a permanent improvement bond will allow us to do much needed repairs and upgrades to our facilities. During the months of May/June we will be replacing the Cardinal Middle School parking lot. Unfortunately, that space has failed and has become a hazard over the last several years. In addition, we will enter into a three-phase roofing project. The Cardinal High School and Cardinal Intermediate School roofs that in the most need of repair/replacement will be fixed during the summer months. Specifically, the CHS roof over the back hallway/weight room area of the building and at CIS the gym area roof. At the end of next year the remainder of the CHS roof will be completed as well as other roofs that are
at risk including Jordak Elementary. We are also replacing the telephone pole lighting system at the football stadium. This work will get underway in June and scheduled to be complete before the end of July. It will be nice to be able to view our football and soccer games with a properly lit field. We will also be making changes to our safety and security mechanisms including modifying how visitors enter the building. Finally, if you have an opportunity check out the newly updated flooring in the Cardinal High School weight room, please do so. Many thanks to Tarkett for donating approximately $48,000 worth of material and labor to make that space attractive. We will continue look for ways to improve the facilities as well as our programming for the students and families of the Cardinal Local School District.

Advanced Communications: Thanks to some creativity and carefully managed settings, CHS has another way of communicating; add us on snapchat at cardinalhigh. The advanced communications class is reminding students about events at CHS while adding a little fun each week such as wacky Wednesday contests. The class has also been instrumental in the PRIDE rollout at CHS this year by creating videos for each hashtag. Raymond A Horn Outstanding Students We are thrilled to be able to share that two of our high school students were recognized this year as Raymond A. Horn Outstanding Students for the 2017-18 school year. The award is given to a student in each district every year for their remarkable performance. Nicolas C. and Sam L. were the recipients - Sam was actually nominated by her teachers at Auburn Career Center. They say she is a hard working student, earning a 4.0 every quarter since starting her teaching professions pathways. Sam even wrote her own children’s book and presented it to preschoolers at Lakeland Community College. Teachers say her compassion and determination will help her with any challenge thrown her way. Nic is one of our Geauga County ESC Job Program members and takes great pride in his work at the cafe at the high school. In addition to gaining important employment skills, he has mastered using his energetic personality to bring smiles to everyone he comes across. He is also very involved in Special Olympics and the Great Geauga County Fair. Congratulations to both of you on receiving this honor!
Students of the Month Congratulations to the April students of the month: senior Taylor Z., junior Kailyn F., sophomore Lauren D., and freshman Jessica P. Students are nominated and voted by staff and will earn a home cooked breakfast before school, a certificate and their picture posted on social media.

Virginia Travers Signs Letter of Intent When Virginia Travers first learned how to play golf, just four short years ago, she immediately set a goal - play for a college team. At 11:39 a.m. on Wednesday, April 11, Virginia was all smiles in the lobby of Cardinal High School as she signed her National Letter of Intent to play the sport for Ashland University - the only university she wanted to attend. “I can’t explain how good this feels,” said Virginia. “To be able to go to the school I fell in love with and play golf for them is just a double bonus, I’m so excited.” Virginia will be a walk on for the school’s second team, eventually hoping to earn a scholarship and a spot on the first team. Virginia’s golf career began when she was a freshman in high school. “She originally wanted to play volleyball in ninth grade,” says Varsity Golf Coach (and dad) Glenn Travers. “When she realized that wasn’t a good fit for her she asked if I would teach her how to golf... I said, ‘sure.’” The pair would practice, particularly the short game, in the backyard for at least 90 minutes every day, eventually convincing neighbors to allow them to create golf holes in their yards too, for a more realistic approach to finetuning her skills. And when the weather turned cold, “I would putt in the house on the carpet,” shrugged Virginia. All of the hard work paid off. Starting out Virginia says she was shooting in the upper 80s for nine holes, but she finished her freshmaan year as a starter for the JV team and shot a 55 for her best nine-hole round. As a sophomore she earned the number four spot on the Varsity golf team and was

a letter winner. During both her junior and senior years, Virginia was selected as the Varsity Golf team captain and earned the role of number one golfer. She advanced from the Sectional Tournament to the District Tournament both years, narrowly missing the State Tournament by three and five strokes respectively. Virginia also received CVC honorable mention honors as a junior and senior. Along with golf, athletically Virginia also played basketball for the Huskies. Academically, she is a member of the National Honor Society and Student Leadership committee, works with Project ACHIEVE, serves as a freshman mentor, and takes college credit plus classes. Her short term goal is to earn a 4.0 GPA this quarter so she can graduate with her honors diploma. Virginia reports to Ashland at the end of August, where in addition to playing golf, she plans to earn her degree in Biochemistry.

Alex Hutchinson Signs Letter of Intent
He hasn’t been playing soccer long, but as soon as he started kicking the ball, Cardinal High School senior Alex Hutchinson knew he wanted to play as long as he could. “I have always wanted to play soccer at the next level after high school,” said Alex, “I am extremely happy to be continuing this journey.” Surrounded by his parents, school administrators, and a group
of nearly two dozen friends, everyone watched and cheered as Alex signed his National Letter of Intent to play soccer for Baldwin Wallace University in the fall. “It feels really good,” said Alex after signing his letter. “I have known for a while that I was going to BW, soccer wasn’t the deciding factor - I actually didn’t pursue playing there until a few weeks ago when I reached out to

the coach. He’s giving me a chance, so I get to go to the school that I really like and now getting to play soccer is just a plus for me.” Alex began playing soccer in ninth grade and has seen time on both sides of the ball, playing offense and defense for the Huskies, including a stint filling in at goalie his sophomore year. While Alex says he prefers the midfield position, Varsity Soccer Coach Mike Topalian calls Alex one of the program’s most valuable players. “Alex has played almost every position on the field during his time with the team. As a senior, Alex was one of the defensive cornerstones, helping to lead the Huskies to their best season in school history,” Coach Topalian says. On the offensive side of the ball this past season, Alex scored 12 goals, had 12 assists, and earned All-CVC second team honors. In addition to soccer, Alex has also been active as a crew member of the high school musical and plays club soccer in Youngstown. At Baldwin Wallace, he plans to major in film studies with the hopes of becoming a filmmaker in the future.

The HUSKIE REPORT Pride Positive behaviors pay off for 131 students at CHS - they got the day of May 3 off from learning and instead, had fun all day! At the beginning of the semester a hashtag campaign rolled out which encouraged students to exhibit the positive behaviors they learn about as part of the Huskie Pride PBIS rubric. There were 5 hashtags rolled out throughout the semester and those who collected at least one hashtag in each of the five categories got to participate in a day of fun. There was a gaming area where students were allowed to play video games, a movie room, and open gym for athletic activities. Students also won prizes and participated in an epic student vs. staff volleyball game at the end of the day. (Students won the battle by the way, three games to two.) Several prizes were also raffled off to students who earned their hashtags and included water bottles, Huskie gear, snacks, a $200 speaker donated by RadioActive Electronics, a pair of Cleveland Indians tickets and an iTunes gift card!

The HUSKIE REPORT Cardinal Middle School Update! Continuing the annual tradition, CMS 8th grade students read to our Kindergarten and 1st Grade pups on Monday, May 14. Students in 16 middle school classes paired up with the younger classes and read aloud grade level appropriate books to those students. Middle school students also prepared an activity to go along with the story like a game, craft, or coloring page. The event gives both the younger and older students a chance to practice their reading skills and brings lots of smiles to faces! Builders Club This year Builders Club was small, but mighty. A core group of about 12 students participated all year. The first thing we did was create special thank you gifts for every CMS staff member. Then later in the fall we prepared for a Christmas performance at Briar Hill. In December we were supposed to shop for our CMS sponsored family, but a Snow Day canceled that. Builders Club helped organize and wrap the gifts. During the second half of the year we were very busy filling the eggs for the annual Middlefield Village Easter Egg Hunt. We filled hundreds of eggs with candy! In May Builders Club members helped with and performed in the CMS Talent Show. We also raised almost $700 for Pennies for Patients, made a special blanket to cheer up a classmate and worked the Kiwanis Fish Frys. CMS Talent Show - Friday, May 4, 2018 Participants - Ana F. In addition to Mrs. Avalon, we'd like to thank John Avalon, Anita Marlowe, and Claire Zurbuch for volunteering their time to advise the group, as well as Avalon Welding and Machine, LLC for being our industry sponsor!
Track Team Records It’s a new record for the track team at Cardinal Middle School. Eighth-grader Mike S. has set a new record in the shot put with a throw of 45’9” at a meet on Monday, May 7. This marks the third time Mike has broken the record this year. Mike broke the original record set in 1991 of 42’5” back on April 18 with a throw of 42’11”. He went on to break that record at the very next meet with a throw of 43’7” and now this most recent record. Mike’s 43’ throw was good enough to qualify for the OHSAA Middle School State Track Meet on May 12 where he
finished in 5th place in the Shot Put! Mike also was CVC Middle School Champion in the shot. Eighth-grader Lorelei H. also set new school records this year in track. She set the long jump record at 14’8” and broke the 200 hurdles record twice - the first time on April 20 with a time of 32.4 seconds, and then she broke it again at a following meet with a time of 31.38. The original hurdles record was set in 2001. Lorelei was also named Field Event MVP at the Lew Spence Invitational on May 5.

One School, One Book
Holy Bagumba! Flora a self-described cynic and Ulysses the Squirrel have taken over Jordak Elementary School! The pair are characters from the book “Flora & Ulysses” which all students in Jordak read through May 18 for the One School, One Book reading program! On April 18, each class took a scavenger hunt through the school, following clues and looking for characters or scenes from the book. The book itself is from #1 New York Times best-selling author Kate DiCamillo, and is about Flora stepping in at just the right time to try to save Ulysses the squirrel from tragedy. Throughout their adventure Ulysses develops powers of strength, flight, and misspelled poetry, and cynical Flora discovers the possibility of hope and the promise of a capacious heart. Students were so excited to have the characters and various settings around the building and enjoyed their reading assignments and activities! One School, One Book brings a school together through reading; it is designed so that parents read and discuss the book with
their child. At school, teachers review or read the chapters again and do fun activities with students. A big thank you to Kenston schools for sharing their wonderful decorations and 200 books with us for this special occasion; to the Cardinal PTA for their support in bringing this project to life for our pups; and to all of our wonderful staff members who helped decorate the building so it was perfect and ready for the pups when they arrived at school! We couldn’t do it without any of you! Jordak Elementary School will also “pay it forward” and send the decorations and books to James A. Garfield Elementary School in Garrettsville for their One School, One Book campaign! Congratulations as well to students who entered the voluntary essay contest. Winners are: Kindergarten: Layla S., Jake W., Eli Y. First grade: Ora B., Dillon C., Katie H. Second grade: Charlie S., Ava H. Third grade: Xzavier A., Haylee T., Karlie T.
Fourth-grader Sydney S. takes a photo with her grandmother during Grandparents day at Jordak Elementary School.
PTA Grandparents Day Grandparents Day was on May 3 and 4, 2018. Grandparents came to visit with their grandchildren for a fun breakfast, which consisted of Maggie’s Donuts, baked goods, coffee, and juice. Students were able to get their pictures taken with their grandparents, buy flowers at the Flower Sale, make purchases at the Book Fair, and take their grandparents on a tour of their classrooms. Attendance was over the top and students enjoyed their time with family. Our 3rd and 4th grade choir sang in the lobby as grandparents arrived. Also, several grandparents came from out of state!
Lunch with the Principal Students use their earned Huskie Bucks to purchase Lunch with the Principal. We learn about each other and talk about school. Some of the students favorite things to learn about each other and the principal are: favorite color, favorite thing to do in the summer, favorite vegetable, fruit, food, candy, snack, favorite day of the week. We laugh and giggle and eat lunch together, making sure to use our manners. Students sign the their names on the principal’s whiteboard and the picture shown is from three days of student lunches!
