Christmas Customs
M
any of us have Christmas customs, including food and ornaments, that have been passed down to us through grandparents from “the old country. When I went to live in Germany years ago, I learned some memorable customs from my German family there. The feast of St. Nicholas on Dec. 6 is commemorated by putting your shoes outside the door the night before. In the morning you find them filled with candy, nuts and fruit. St. Nicholas was a Greek bishop in the fourth century known to have helped three girls by tossed purses with gold through their windows at night to provide them with dowries. Almost every child receives an Advent calendar with 24 little doors. Each day the child opens one door and finds a sweet behind it and then counts down the days until Christmas. Even the child in every adult loves this. Advent wreaths are well known in U.S. churches with one candle being lit on each of the four Sundays of Advent. But in Germany most families have their own decorated wreath with four candles. Each Sunday the family lights one candle in preparation for the coming of the Christ child. Outdoor Christmas Markets can be found all over Germany, the most famous being the Nuremberg Christkindle Market. Wandering from booth to booth you can find hand-carved wooden figures, beeswax candles, Christmas pyramids, toys, scarves and gloves, and the scent of the ever-present Gluehwein, a steaming-hot, red, mulled wine served in a mug which warms your hands as well as your innards on cold December nights. What is the holiday meal? Often duck, goose or rabbit served with red cabbage and potato dumplings. Lebkuchen (gingerbread) and Stollen, a loaf fruit-cake covered with powdered sugar and sporting a ridge down the middle symbolizing where Jesus lay in swaddling Continued on page 10

Help Fill the Kettles The Salvation Army Red Kettles will be out in the coming weeks with volunteers from Geauga Rotary and Geauga Interact Clubs. All donations in Geauga County’s Red Kettles remain here helping residents with emergency assistance such as home heating costs, rent, gas cards to get to a new job and back to school supplies. Since 1994, the Rotary Clubs of Burton, Middlefield, Chagrin Valley, Chardon, and Chesterland have competed for donations to help Geauga residents. In 2014, more that $30,000 was raised and used in Geauga County to provide help to over 130 families in need. Each year, a Red Kettle Award is given to the Rotary ringing in the most donations. This year, working together with youth members of the Interact Clubs from Berkshire, Chardon, Kenston, and West Geauga, the Red Kettles will be around Geauga on Dec.12 and 19. “It’s amazing how many times over the years someone has come up to us when we’re ringing the bell to say how The Salvation Army helped them when they needed it most,” said
Thank you for allowing us to be part of your life!
Merry Christmas and Happy New Year
Brian Brockway, Red Kettle Captain for the Burton-Middlefield Rotary Club. The Chagrin Valley Rotary will ring the bell at both Starbuck's Coffee and at the southeast corner of North Main and Plaza Drive. The Kenston High School Interact Club will ring the bell in Bainbridge at Mazzulo’s Market, Routes 306 and East Washington, and the Giant Eagle at Route 306 and Bainbridge Road. Chardon Rotary will be ringing at Chardon Walmart and Chardon Giant Eagle. Chardon High School Interact Club will be helping out Saturday, December 19. West Geauga Interact Club members, and the Chesterland Rotarians, will be at Chesterland’s Giant Eagle and Drug Mart both Saturdays. Burton-Middlefield Rotary and the Berkshire Interact Club are at the Middlefield WalMart on Dec. 5 and 12 at the Middlefield WalMart. This is the 21st year the Rotarians have been ringing for Geauga residents in need. Look for local students and Rotarians around town - donations big and small make an impact in our community.

E
very year I try to encourage people to purchase locallymade or sold items as Christmas gifts and so here is my pitch. Supporting your local merchants, craftsman or service providers is an investment in your community. You can give gift certificates for almost any service from car detailing to lawn mowing. Why not give a friend a day at the local spa or a dog grooming gift card? Car wash coupons, haircuts, gutter cleaning or possibly a hand-written certificate for an evening of babysitting, dog sitting or stall cleaning may make someone’s holidays just a bit brighter. The possibilities are endless and we all know someone who can use a day off or a helping hand. Geauga County has a number of fine restaurants and who doesn’t love a gift card for a free meal. Locally-made maple syrup is some of the best and can be a “sweet” treat that, if packaged correctly, can be shipped UPS or USPS. Maybe it’s time you gave your wife that kitchen remodel she has been asking for or install a garage door opener you will both enjoy. This is the time to contract for this coming spring outdoor repairs, additions
or outbuilding projects; prices are better when the schedules are empty. How about purchasing some safety gear for your handyman; safety glasses, gloves, ear plugs and chain saw chaps are just a few items available. The cook may enjoy a new set of pot holders or hot gloves and a humorous apron may bring a smile or two to the kitchen. A friend told me he no longer buys his wife gifts. “I purchased her a burial plot two years ago and she still hasn’t used it,” he said with a stupid grin on his face. I reminded him that she could have used it for him; although that never crossed his mind. He was joking, using that line whenever the subject of how difficult his wife is to buy for comes up. I told him to get a bit creative and listen to his wife. Women often give us hints that go in one ear and out the other. Now what was it my wife said she would like for Christmas? To find out what Joe would do, e-mail questions to editorial@middlefieldpost. com. Joe’s articles are his opinion and are only intended as a guide. Please consult an expert when in doubt.

merry christmas Giving Equals Happiness! The Magic Still Lives On
“I
t is more blessed to give than to receive,” writes Dr. Luke in Acts 20:35. He was quoting Jesus, the One who gave us God’s love in extraordinary ways. I like the way The Message paraphrases this quote when it says, “You’re far happier giving than getting.” Of course many of us are looking to receive. We make Christmas lists to let people know what we want. After all, Santa is coming and he needs to know. Besides, turn on your television or pick up a magazine and the message is clear. “Buy this” and “get that” so that you can have the best Christmas ever, and a happy life. For those of us who like to shop (yes, some men do enjoy it, but just won’t admit it!), there is a nice buzz that comes over us when we get what we want. Personally, I like EBay. The bidding only adds to the thrill! Unfortunately it is not long before we are looking to buy something else we need! Maybe we should consider the words of Jesus more carefully. Does he know something that we need to pay attention to? Could his wisdom actually lead us to a happier life? The answer is “Yes” and “Yes!” We are designed by our Maker to give. When we do so, we imitate and tap into
the very heart of God. The challenge is to re-program our thinking so that giving becomes a way of life. It is fun to shop for others at Christmastime and surprise them with a nice gift. However, it is even better to look for ways to give every day. Let me challenge you as I will myself. Make these days leading to Christmas an opportunity to test what Jesus said. Look for a way to give to at least one person every day. Don’t lie down to sleep at night until you have given something to somebody else. Be intentional and specific and ask God to show you how and to whom to give to. You don’t have to spend a lot of money. In fact the most precious things, money cannot buy. Be creative and the Lord will guide you and help you. Let it become a journey of faith as you partner with the Savior born in Bethlehem. Finally, take note of the joy meter in your heart right now, and then again after you establish regular giving each day. Will God’s Word prove true? Will you discover that giving = happiness and spread that same joy to others? That would truly make for a joyful Christmas and a blessed New Year! Roger Kruse serves with One Mission Society as an International Shepherd/Trainer to South East Asia. He, his wife Glenda and family love the rural lifestyle of the Middlefield area.
Holiday Christmas Customs Continued from page 1 clothes, are not far away. Today you will still find Christmas trees in German homes with real candles on them. Of course, you have to keep an eye on them and have a bucket of water nearby in the event of fire. The custom of having a tree in the house spread across Germany in the late 1700s, but it wasn’t until 1836 that the first image of the Christmas tree was printed in the Americas. It is widely believed that a photo of German Prince Albert and his British wife Queen Victoria next to a Christmas tree led to its mass appeal on both sides of the Atlantic. Silent Night (Stille Nacht) is the most popular Christmas Carole written in German and was sung for the first time in1818 in a tiny village north of Salzburg, Austria where a young priest and his organist composed the lyrics and music. The song has been translated into more than 200 languages. Even the Amish sing it a cappella in their own dialect. Now, as the Germans would say, we wish you a Froehliche Weihnachten und ein Glueckliches Neues Jahr, Merry Christmas and Happy New Year from Nancy and Dieter Huth.

T
he pure white snow fell gently on the crystal-like branches and created a fluffy carpet leading up to our door. It was the perfect Christmas Eve setting so long ago. We had convinced the children that “he” was on his way. There wasn’t a shadow of a doubt because they excitedly told us they had seen sleigh tracks alongside our road as we came home from church. Electricity filled the air as the kids kept peering out the front window. It almost looked like daylight because everything in sight was covered with a pure white blanket that we knew would make Santa’s ride much smoother. Then the magical time had come. We heard the bells and then a hearty “Ho-Ho-Ho.” There, at the very top of our drive, was the one person who children all over the world wait for - Santa Claus. His bright red suit stood out brightly against the white back drop and there was no mistaking his goal as he sauntered down our drive and up to the door. By this time our daughter could hardly contain her excitement as she proceeded to do cart wheels all over the living room. Santa entered, distributed the gifts and was quickly on his way, leaving behind a couple of wide-eyed, speechless children. I don’t know if they remember that evening like I do, but their dad and I enjoyed seeing Santa through their eyes and sharing their thrill of a lifetime. Now, so many years later, our children have
grandchildren of their own and the thrill of Christmas is almost exclusively set aside for the little ones. I guess I’m just a kid at heart and a little part of me wants to make sure that they all feel the same magic, if only for one evening. Oh, you and I know that there are Santa’s helpers everywhere to meet the heavy demands of the times. However, if we can just stop for one moment and see “Santa” through the eyes of a child, we too could feel the excitement and wonder of the time. Wouldn’t it be much better than loathing crowded shopping malls, endless shopping lists and the stress of entertaining? We should all be children, if only for a short while, and allow the magic of Christmas to engulf us and take us away to a place that will live in our hearts forever. That Christmas Eve when our children received a special visit from Santa stands out in my mind as vividly as if it were yesterday. A few years past we reminded our daughter of that evening and how she believed with all her heart. In turn she made a plaque with two small Santa’s painted on the sides with the words “I BELIEVE” in the middle. Who did she present the plaque to? Santa Claus, of course. After all, he was visiting our family once again as he did so many years ago. The magic still lives on. Ellie has been a freelance writer for more than 40 years and has written over 400 articles.
