Whether it is the sound of a murmuring brook or the spectacle of a sparkling waterfall, water in the garden provides at the same time a connection to nature and an escape from the ordinary. Come along and rediscover your garden in a way you never imagined before.
3
Your Backyard Paradise
Let Your Imagination Be Your Inspiration Water can take on almost any shape. Imagine the calm of a serene water landscape, the joy of majestic koi, the spark of a babbling brook, or the vitality of a gushing waterfall. Find out how easy it is to make your imagination come to life.
O
nce you have decided on a particular water feature for your backyard, choosing the right location is the next step. A koi or fish pond should be located near a patio or close to the house so that one can observe and interact with the fish. A splashing water feature is best placed in the middle of the garden, while a natural pond is perfect for the garden perimeter.
4
General considerations 4 to 6 hours of direct sunlight are perfect for a pond. Deep water zones help prevent the pond from heating up too much if you live in a region with a lot of sunshine. Locations directly under trees are not ideal, since leaves and needles can influence water quality and dealing with tree roots can complicate construction and installation.
Basic materials and equipment:
• • • • •
Pond liner or pre-formed pond Pump for filtration or for water feature Filter for mechanical and biological filtration Spiral tubing or PVC pipe for connection of components Sand, pebbles and boulders (as needed)
Flexible PVC or rubber (EPDM) liners are perfectly well suited for most applications – they are UV resistant, do not rot or tear easily and conform to almost any shape – as long as they are designated as “pond liner” or “fish-safe”. Flexible liner also makes large and uniquely shaped ponds and water courses possible. Pre-formed ponds offer the advantage of very easy installlation but are limited in size and customization options.. For larger ponds using flexible liner, consider securing help from friends or neighbors before laying out the liner, it can quite heavy. Flexible liner can also be glued for creating truly large liners from smaller pieces.
PRO Advice
A good plan makes building a pond a fun and easy-to-do project. Use tools like the OASE Pond Planner as a guide for your design. Remember to incorporate bog zones (along the edge of the pond), shallow water zones and deep water zones (3 ft. or more). This will give your pond a very natural appearance and provide a proper enviroment for a variety of plants and aquatic life.

Pump Technology
Bring Enchantment And Life Into Your Garden Moving water is truly fascinating. It engages all senses with sight and sound, while it refreshes and soothes. At the heart of any garden pond is a pump which moves the water through a filter, sends it up to a waterfall or sprays it into the air for a sparkling display.
B
ut not all pumps are created equal. In the past, many ponds were built with simple submersible sump pumps or the like. These pumps are based on designs for non-continuous use and generally use a lot of energy due to their relatively inefficient design. To make a long story short, the time was ripe for a change.
6
Application-based Pump Design For many years now, OASE has designed its pumps to suit a particular purpose, be it feeding a filter system, running a water feature or bringing a statue to life. With the right combination of casing, impeller design and motor technology, OASE-built pumps can run continuously and efficiently for years.
Superior Motor Technology OASE wants your investment in your pond pump to last, which means we incorporate features and technology that will give you peace of mind. All OASE pumps feature thermal motor protection and many of them are frost-proof. Asynchronous motor technology allows for electronic regulation of pump flow via rheostat and greatly improves pump durability and reduces energy consumption. Patented Impeller Designs The impeller gives the pump its characteristics. In OASE filter pumps the impeller is designed to move solid materials (fish food, pine needles) without clogging or being damaged. Fountain and water feature pumps, on the other hand, put out much more pressure because of a different design of their impellers. OASE puts this much effort into its pumps for a reason: a failed pump can mean an inconvenience at best and serious problems for a fish pond at the worst. By using an OASE pump in your pond or for your water feature you can be sure that the pump suits the purpose and will perform reliably for many years.
PRO Advice
Ponds are often built with a single pump for filtration and running a waterfall. While this might seem to make sense initially, it can become costly in the long run. Since a single pump has to be relatively powerful in order to run the waterfall but also has to operate constantly to maintain water quality, the operating costs can be very high. We recommend a two pump setup with a dedicated energy-efficient filter pump and a high-performance waterfall pump. 7
Filter Systems
Let The Inner Values Of Your Pond Shine With clear water you will have the best seat in the house. A good filter system guarantees that you have an unobstructed view of the wonderful world of water in your backyard. So look below the surface and explore all your pond has to offer.
P
onds are more than simply water; they are, in fact, man-made ecosystems that are influenced by the changes in weather and seasons. Because backyard ponds are fairly shallow and usually have a relatively high fish load, they can only adjust themselves to these changes in a limited fashion – unlike most natural bodies of water. Therefore, filter systems play a vital role in maintaining the proper biological balance in the pond.
8
Filtration Explained Filter systems work in two ways: they trap solids suspended in the water by mechanical means and – by applying naturally occurring biological breakdown processes – remove superfluous nutrients stemming from plant decay, fish waste, over-feeding, and environmental influences. Together, mechanical and biological filtration result in great water uality for the aquatic life in the pond.
The BIOsys Pond Filtration System A complete pond filter system combines a filter pump, UV clarifier and biomechanical filter: The pump moves water and debris past the UV clarifier – where microscopic floating algae are clumped together in order to be filtered out mechanically – and then through the mechanical and biological stages of the filter. OASE has developed and sized these components – filter pump (Aquamax), UV Clarifier (Bitron) and filters (Biotec, Filtoclear) – to work together in perfect harmony for superior results at the lowest total cost of ownership The combination of these OASE components is the BIOsys Pond Filtration System. All you need to know is the size of your pond in order to chose the right and compatible components. The OASE Clear Water Guarantee Because the components in an OASE BIOsys Pond Filtration System are so well matched, OASE offers an industry-leading Clear Water Guarantee. This means that not only will your plants and fish benefit from the excellent water quality but also that you will be able to enjoy your pond fully – for as long as you own it. For more detailed information and OASE BIOsys product selections, see Page 16.
PRO Advice PRO Advice
Get a quick start on establishing a proper bacterial environment in your filter after installation or at the beginning of the seaA good plan makes building a pond a fun son by adding starter bacteria directly into and easy to do project. Use tools like the the filter. OASE Microbe Balance is ideally pond planner in the center of this catalog suited to introduce a mix of naturally ocas a guide for your design. Remember to curring bacteria into your pond. incorporate bog zones (along the edge of the pond), shallow water zones and Filter pads should not be cleaned with deep water zones (3 ft. or more). This will soap, bleach or pressure washers. In order give your pond a very natural appearance to maintain them, simply breaking up comand provide a proper environment for a pacted debris with the built-in cleaning variety of plants and aquatic life. mechanisms in OASE filters is sufficient. 9
Pond Maintenance and Lighting
Give Your Pond The Care It Deserves Your pond will soon become the pride and joy of your garden. You will look forward to the changes of the seasons and watching nature grow and fade. But with these changes new challenges present themselves. Meet them hands on.
A
pond is a part of your garden and just like you tend to flower beds and mow the lawn, your pond needs some attention every once in a while. And just like there are appropriate tools to prune bushes and rake leaves easily, you can now take care of your backyard paradise with professional tools that are easy and convenient to use.
10
With an OASE Pondovac you can clean all the nooks and crannies – and even remove string algae – in your pond without getting as much as a toe wet. A variety of nets let you easily remove leaves and allow you to inspect fish without harming them. For freezing climates the ultra-low-power Ice Free Ice Preventer ensures proper gas exchange between water and air.
Set The Stage For Magical Evenings Unlock the beauty of your pond at night. An illuminated pond makes for a splendid spectacle after sunset: water drops refract into a ďŹ rework of sparkles, and waterfalls look like as if they are made out of liquid gold.
L
ight in the pond extends the time you can enjoy the beauty of your pond. With only a few well-placed accent lights you can create a magical landscape that will fascinate you every evening as you turn it on. Your own creativity is the only limit as you combine colors and highlights for a grandiose display in your backyard.
The OASE Lunaqua Series offers a comprehensive set of options that can stand alone or be incorporated into existing low-voltage landscape lighting systems – above or below water. With their adjustable beam angles, included stands, and ground stakes Lunaqua 2 and 3 give unprecedented versatility for installation and application. Sizing Your Pond
•
The tip of a 1 inch wide tape measure will be visible at 2 feet depth in a pond that is built using all required and properly sized OASE BIOsys Pond Filtration System components.
•
Multiplying width by length by depth in feet by 7.5 gives the approximate size in gallons.
•
If the tip of the tape is not visible, your OASE dealer will recommend changes to remedy the situation.
•
Pick the appropriate components for the pond using the chart above.
•
The Clear Water Guarantee assumes that all OASE BIOsys Pond Filtration System components are in working condition and that normal pond and appropriate equipment maintenance is performed.
•
Fish stock will reduce the effectiveness of the filtration and needs to be taken into account. See the chart for recommendations for ponds with fish stock.
•
The Clear Water Guarantee also assumes that a proper plant and fish population – appropriate for the size of pond and the specific OASE BIOsys Pond Filtration System products in use – is being maintained.

Clear Water Guarantee when used in a BIOsys Pond Filtration System Multi-directional valve »Filtration position«
Algae and waste are first flocculated by the UVC clarifier. The water is then clarified in the fine mechanical and large-pore biological filter elements.
Multi-directional valve »Cleaning position«
After turning the knob, the cleaning handle is slowly moved up and down several times. This breaks up blockages in the filter elements. Loosened debris is then flushed out of the system.
