reat spirits flowed together in camaraderie and unique tastings when over 70 spirit industry leaders gathered for PR%F Awards 2021. Officially named the world’s largest spirits and wine competition in the US, PR%F Awards 2021 encompassed innovation with judging. PR%F Awards 2021 launched a new dual adult beverage competition format including two competitions in one—PR%F Awards-Masked, The Double-Blind Tasting, and PR%F Awards-Unmasked, The Total Package.

Upwards of thousands of spirits, wine brands, and other beverages were submitted for consideration during the two-day, double blind-tasting point-rating competition held at Westgate Las Vegas Resort & Casino in October. The night before the judging, the welcoming reception brought everyone together at Benihana in the Westgate Las Vegas. PR%F Awards was created as an avenue to introduce emerging and established spirits brands to key decision makers and beverage buyers. All PR%F judges are mainstream beverage buyers, distributors, and industry leaders with buying decision capability. The awards competition was open to beverage brands, domestic and international, offering over 300 categories. This included spirits, wine, champagne, sparkling wines, seltzers (spirited and non spirited), ciders (spirited and non spirited), frozen concoctions, novelties, coffee liquors, canned cocktails (RTD), energy drinks, waters, and mixers. judge/buyer comes from different facets of the industry: distributors, restaurants, bars, nightclubs, resorts, airlines, retail, liquor stores, box chains, and online distributors. The judges (buyers) asked for a total exposure of products being judged in addition to the double-blind tasting experience, so PR%F Awards expanded this year’s competition to give buyers all that they need to make buying decisions. PR%F Awards developed the double-blind tasting competition for the judges to rate spirits, wines, and other beverages in a 100-point rating system. After tasting points were accumulated, the distinguished panel of judges evaluated entries, seeing and feeling the bottle, can, or product. They read the ingredients and saw the overall marketing package (look, feel, and approach) the brands want to convey to the patron. The 100-point rating system includes the Century Award (100 Points), Double Gold (96 to 99 points, Gold (91 to 95 points), Silver (85 to 90 points), and Bronze (79 to 85 points). All spirits were evaluated in the NEAT Glass (Naturally Engineered Aroma Technology) designed to apply a scientific approach to spirits tasting with its patented glass shape.

This year, PR%F Awards-Unmasked, The Total Package made an incredible showing with more than bottles judged by artists and design gurus on bottle labels, shapes, theme, color patterns, and creativity. In the beverage industry, how a bottle presents itself on the shelf is just as important as the juice’s perfection, and many brands were decorated with medals to honor their designs. All winners will receive a beautiful bespoke medal, a winner graphic, an entered graphic, online/collateral marketing use of the award, and PR%F Award logo and medals with no additional licensing fees. This special edition of PR%F Magazine featuring all PR%F Awards 2021 winners is distributed to its 14 million readers with our title sponsor Food and Beverage Magazine, following the competition.
During the two days of judging, on the first day, the judges enjoyed lunch with a delicious selection of Italian cuisine favorites at Fresco Italiano. The judges were treated to lunch on the second day at Edge Steakhouse Las Vegas, enjoying great food served with warm hospitality and a welcoming atmosphere. PR%F Awards 2022 is a private judging competition and will be held in July. For more information, visit www.proofawards.com.
Women-Owned spirits and wine brands that joined the PR%F Awards competition were honored with a special PR%F Awards recognition with an additional medal of accolade to congratulate their role in pushing the industry forward. “PR%F Awards 2021 was an incredible showcase for the entire beverage industry with tequila leading the way with the most entries this year,” said Michele D. Tell, executive director/founder of the PR%F Awards. “This year’s special showcase of The Total Package event was a personal trade show for more than 70 buyers to taste and review each of our entries, learn about the brands and see the price points for a personal evaluation of what their venue needs.” “Women-owned brands, Ready-to-Drink, and whiskeys also lead the charge for huge representation as well as botanical-based spirits, and this year, a full round of spiritless spirits,” she said. “Our judges, who come from airlines, cruise lines, restaurant groups, bars, grocery chains, resorts, and more, all gathered under the magnificent roof Westgate Las Vegas to explore the new trends of the beverage industry, give honorable ratings to those winning brands and to personally meet 1000 emerging new brands that entered this year’s competition,” she said. “It was magical.”

E THE TRUTH T S A T OUR VALUES ARE CHANGING THE WAY THE WORLD DRINKS
TRUTH IN SCIENCE
Twisted "marketing science" masks truth and misleads spirits drinkers. Alcohol aroma quickly destroys smell-ability forcing you to rely on your past tasting memories
TRUTH IN EDUCATION
Form your own opinions, why count on someone else's palate? You are the best judge...especially if you use the best glass. The few critics with formal sensory education were trained with tulip glasses which hide truth, and many put personal favorites, tastes and opinions over honest evaluation
TRUTH IN GENDER EQUITY
Women's noses are more sensitive. Tulip glasses discriminate by concentrating nose-numbing alcohol
TRUTH IN PERSONAL ENJOYMENT
Glass choice is critical. NEAT is scientifically designed to divert nose-numbing ethanol, magnify aromas, enhance drinking experiences and support buying decisions

Organizing Tasting Notes and Scoring
By George F Manska, Corporate Strategy Officer, inventor & entrepreneur, Chief Research & Development Arsilica, Inc.
I
In spirits, the idea of a scoring system was borrowed initially from wine. Entire books are published on a single system. Still, at this point, the Parker 100-point wine system, adapted to spirits, is a solid, rational approach and has a high probability of becoming the common method for rating spirits eventually. PARKER’S 100-POINT RATING SYSTEM:
n Tasting Methods 1, I discussed the development of aroma recognition. In 2, I presented a simple tasting procedure. In this installment, I will provide a basic starting point to scoring and developing your personal baseline for spirits evaluations.
Parker’s system is based on 100-points and was co-invented with Victor Morgenroth. Parker designed it to counter confusing or inflated ratings by other wine writers with a conflict of interest, having a financial interest in wines they rated. The scale, now widely adapted to spirits evaluators, ranks 50 to 100 points.
Scoring systems are highly controversial. There are literally hundreds, yet most bloggers, critics, and authors don’t use a numerical scoring system and simply write about their own opinions of the spirit. There is no weighting, accountability, or “measuring stick” to gauge opinions without numerical scoring. Ratings should be a serious personal spirit purchasing consideration, and adopting your own method is the key to consistency, growth, development, and understanding of spirits.
Many competitions do not publish numerical ratings and assign medals based on judging panel consensus. Nearly all use “internal only” proprietary score sheets, and most are unwilling to disclose their methods. A logical starting point is described below. Experience builds proficiency, and you may decide to add additional details under the basic subheadings, However, the weightings should be standardized right from the start.
PARKER’S 100-POINT RATING SYSTEM

TASTING METHODS PART 3

the science of spirits
•
Appearance: 5 points,
•
Nose: 10 points, (remember that nose is orthonasal only)
•
Palate (Taste and Mouthfeel): 25 points,
•
Finish: 10 points, (remember that finish is retronasal aroma+ mouthfeel + taste, the trigeminal input)
•
Supplemental Notes: Quality and drinkability should be noted, and projected changes (e.g. due to aging).
All categories add up to 50 points, and the total of all points is added to the 50 base points to get final 100-point evaluation system score. For details on the traits and characteristics to be evaluated under each of the above categories, study the comprehensive WSET Systematic Approach to Tasting (SAT). The following
links provide a usable description of evaluation details which are provided to aid in understanding the depth and details of the above judging criteria. THE FUTURE OF EVALUATION:
Summary: THE IMPORTANT TAKEAWAY AS AN EVALUATOR: Put YOU first; (1) use a scoring system, (2) discipline yourself to a regimen, (3) develop your system through consistent practice; and (4) learn how other systems work. Using a scoring format adds discipline and consistency to your evaluations. Don’t become just another opinionated blogger. Go a step further, and take a certification course.
There is no quick and easy way to knowledge. Read, learn, practice, and apply. Ignoring these steps can make you (1) a target for those who get rich from your failure to educate yourself, or (2) a wannabee name-dropper and label worshipper like many consumers and self-styled, uneducated “experts.” “I like it” or “I don’t like it” is not evaluation. The spirits authors, critics, and bloggers popular today who do not use a scoring system and do not understand and apply simple sensory science discipline and rationale will disappear, replaced by those who can integrate an entire spectrum of disciplined evaluation and science to provide truly meaningful advice to the consumer.
CONSUMER TAKEAWAYS: If you choose to follow other evaluators, don’t fall into the trap of “the higher the rating number, the better the spirit.” Many systems lack a rational approach and maybe only a gross number assignment without a methodical weighting process to arrive at that number. Research and investigate your sources carefully, follow those raters you believe have a solid methodology and rationale for rating, and never fail to develop your own sense of VALUE (rated quality vs. price) whether you are a collector or just want to enhance your understanding. Don’t be a label worshipper. Remember that scarcity, low volume production, and high price does not make a great spirit. Using your developed sensory abilities to evaluate, you can be the judge, rational, fair, and unbiased.

With only three to four open spots per category, the competition for placement is intense. Delta Sky Club has been honored to be the travel partner for the PR%F Awards since its inception. WELCOME OUR JUDGES! Officially named the world’s largest spirits and wine competition in the US, PR%F Awards, judges travel across the US to create spirits, wines, and beverages in a proprietary 100-point rating system. Each judge is a key buyer and decision maker in the spirits/wine industries and comes from different facets of the industry: distributors, retail, restaurants, bars, nightclubs, resorts, airlines, liquor stores, box chains, and online distributors. PR%F Awards 2021 launched a new dual adult beverage competition format to include two competitions in one—PR%F Awards-Masked, The Double-Blind Tasting, and PR%F Awards-Unmasked, The Total Package. After tasting points are accumulated, the distinguished panel of judges (all buyers) will evaluate each brand unmasked, showing their naked contents. Judges will see and feel the bottle, can, or product, read the ingredients, and see the overall marketing package (look, feel, and approach) the brands want to convey to the patron. This prestigious honor for winners selected by beverage industry buyers is the ultimate competition with more than 300 categories. PR%F Awards thanks all of its judges and showcases the experts that participate.
Chris Motley, Beverage Specialist Liquor World Las Vegas
Chris Motley has 12 years of experience in retail beer, wine, and spirits sales and promotions in Denver and Las Vegas. As a Spirits Specialist, his areas of expertise are in whiskeys, Caribbean rum, and agave spirits. A big focus of his career has been in single-barrel selections, and he has traveled often to Kentucky and Mexico to make these selections. “I am also what I like to call a ‘Cocktail Historian’ and am more into that type of presentation than I am a mixologist, having performed presentations and tasting classes for groups from 25 to 300. I have also created and produced numerous festivals of spirits and beers from capacities of 500 to 1500,” explains Chris.
WHAT DID YOU FIND DIFFERENT DURING THIS YEAR’S JUDGING? Chris Motley: I’ve judged the Denver International Spirits a couple of times, and it’s very similar. The biggest difference here is the second day, with all of the spirits on display for all to see, with the packaging. I really enjoyed this part of the judging, but I would have liked a little more time to assess all of the items properly.
WHAT DID YOU THINK OF THE UNCOVERED PORTION OF THE JUDGING? Chris Motley: The uncovered portion is really cool.

It’s great to be able to see the full package, as that’s so important in retail. I think, though, to ask all of the judges to attempt to judge all those items quickly is a bit much to do in one day. I tried to check out as many as I could but wound up only gravitating to items that interested me.
WHAT TRENDS DID YOU EXPERIENCE DURING THIS YEAR’S JUDGING? Chris Motley: The biggest trends I saw with this competition were special-casked or extra wood-finished American whiskeys. The other, of course, was seltzers and RTDs. Way too many of these on the shelves, but they keep selling, so what do I know lol.
Southern California and an MBA from the University of Phoenix. “Certifications support my hands-on industry knowledge from the Society of Wine Educators with a CSW, WSET I, and WSET II, as well as the first level course from the Court of Master Sommelier,” says Alice.

I was very excited to be invited to participate in this event. As a retail buyer, we have limited access or ability to be invited to these types of events.

Alice Itsell’s current experience with Bashas’/AJ’s Fine Foods has extended for 28 years. She started with the Bashas’ format as a store department clerk and then expanded to the AJ’s Fine Foods format as a Wine Steward. As her education and experience grew, she shifted to the warehouse as a liquor merchandiser and traveled the state of Arizona, visiting stores and doing resets, merchandising, and training. This gave Alice extended experience in each of the formats: Conventional, Gourmet/Specialty, and Hispanic format. Alice is a graduate of the University of Arizona with a bachelor of science in Business Administration. She has a WAFC certificate from the University of
Alice Itsell: I participated in judging the wine portion of the event. I thought the process of tasting the products “Blind” combined with the second day of sampling “Uncovered” was a very revealing experience. The “Blind” tasting section was an education in focusing on the character and elements of the category or varietal. The “Uncovered” sampling was revealing and challenging. During this process, one has to balance their preconceived notions of quality, value, and presentation. How best these products will sell depends on the channel, retail, or restaurant. It is always fun to find that real winner within the mix.
WHAT TRENDS DID YOU EXPERIENCE DURING THIS YEAR’S JUDGING? Alice Itsell: The new trends were limited due to the number of selections presented for the wines. The flavored wine category had new flavors, ranging from traditional berry (blueberry, raspberry) to tropical (mixed tropical, mango). Red Blends continue to fill the market with great success.
