Getting back to nature Research carried out by Center Parcs explains just why we should be embracing the forest bathing trend and getting back to nature with outdoor team-building events to boost productivity. A university study conducted in Japanese forests in the 1990s found that as little as 15 minutes spent walking in a forest is associated with improved mood and feelings of health, coining the term Shinrin-yoku – literally translated as forest bathing. Yet among the events industry, time spent outdoors is scarce. In a recent survey conducted by Center Parcs among 175 members of the events industry, 61% of respondents said health and wellbeing is a high focus for internal events, yet only 26% said outdoor space was a priority when booking an event or meeting destination. Dan Elliott, national sales manager at Center Parcs, says ‘with the natural outdoor environment known to reduce stress, increased time spent outdoors is positive for the mind and body, delivering physical, psychological and socio-economic benefits’. For companies, the wellbeing of employees is essential for success, so time spent outdoors and within nature could be a simple solution to achieving improved employee wellbeing and positive attitudes in the workplace.
