Gordon Jones Though it’s always been a popular tourist destination, Bath and Somerset were never on Britain’s culinary radar. Thankfully this attitude is now a thing of the past; Bath and the surrounding area are now considered foodie destinations in their own right – it’s about time. When people come to visit the great city of Bath, or the beautiful Somerset countryside, towns and villages, there’s no shortage of great food and drink for them to enjoy. The great tapestry of diverse restaurants, businesses and shops is part of what makes our little corner of the world so appealing. I love that you can go from the bustling centre of Bath and within 15 minutes be enjoying the peace and quiet of the canal. Bath and Somerset are awash with dynamic chefs and exciting restaurants, and there’s a great diversity of cuisine available. This competition pushes us chefs and restaurateurs to keep improving and coming up with new ideas to ensure diners are happy. I like to cook with my heart and decide each day what to create for my customers. It can depend on the weather or what new and exciting produce my suppliers have to offer. Being based in Somerset means there’s a bountiful array of exceptional produce available locally; Larkhall Butchers supply us with fantastic-quality meat. Local foragers Bello Wild Foods are another notable supplier, providing us with different and interesting ingredients including various herbs and mushrooms. It’s unfortunately a difficult era for the restaurant industry, with small businesses struggling to establish themselves thanks to high rents and rates; Bath has lost a lot of independent restaurants recently. This means that we have to nurture our talented young chefs – especially those trying to steer away from traditional concepts – and work hard to ensure that this region has the diverse and exciting gastronomic offering that it deserves. As a busy chef, I don’t have a great deal of time to eat out, although when I do I head to Yak Yeti Yak or The Longs Arms, which both serve consistently good food. At Menu Gordon Jones we strive to make sure that we’re accessible to all diners, providing a fine dining experience without any pretension. I hope that you’ll use this guide to navigate the excellent gastronomic offerings around Bath and Somerset, and find some new favourites of your own.

There are only two things you really need to know about Menu Gordon Jones – firstly, it’s listed in The Times’ Top 100 Restaurants in the UK, and secondly, there’s a long waiting list. Pre-booking is essential at this 22-cover restaurant, which can be found just a short stroll from Bath’s city centre. The food, cooked by Michelin-trained Gordon, is breathtakingly beautiful and the incredible set menus are a delight. There’s always an element of surprise; eating here is certainly more of an event than just lunch or dinner, but it’s grounded in the chef’s honest, Scottish culinary roots. As Mr Jones says, ‘come with an open mind and enjoy the experience’.

*

£50 to

£55

‘...the incredible set menus are a delight...’ Gordon himself is clearly one of the main attractions at his eponymous restaurant. The open kitchen allows diners to watch him at work, and when he’s not cooking he’s in the restaurant chatting and occasionally showing off the huge gun that normally lives on the wall. Gordon’s a born showman, but when it comes to the food, he’s an artist. The menu changes daily and a surprise selection of dishes are created for each service, so guests never know what they’ll be sampling until it’s in front of them. This element of surprise keeps the offering fresh and exciting, and ensures that dining here is a memorable experience. Gordon uses as many unusual local ingredients as he can, so you might find the likes of Dorset wasabi ice cream, seagull eggs or duck hearts on his innovative menus. Ever original, his wine flights are designed to dispel outdated, preconceived notions about wine pairings. As much emphasis is placed on the wine as the food, with the team endeavouring to ensure that the potable offering is just as exceptional as Gordon’s cuisine. Each tipple is hand-picked to complement the food offering, and every one is organic and biodynamic. All the while, impeccable service ensures that this one-of-a-kind establishment excels in every area. There’s every reason for epicureans to add Menu Gordon Jones to their foodie hit list. *Price range represents the cost of a tasting menu for lunch or dinner.

We visited for lunch and were delighted to discover an extensive menu full of delicious, locally sourced dishes, with something for even the most discerning palate. We were greeted by Vincent, a charming and ever-helpful front-of-house manager who ensured that our visit was a success. The venue boasts a malt bar with over 200 single malt whiskies and a choice of a dozen or more gins. On Vincent’s recommendation I enjoyed a local Courtney’s Exe gin and tonic before we moved on to our meal.

‘...perched right on the bank...’

We were spoilt for choice but I opted to start with deliciously rich baked Camembert studded with cranberries. My wife chose equally well with a delightful confection of smoked salmon, prawn and samphire. For mains, I couldn’t resist the Exmoor venison tenderloin cooked to perfection and served with a tasty selection of roasted vegetables. My wife chose the rainbow trout, which was delectably fresh and perfectly seasoned to highlight the delicate flavours. The Exmoor White Horse Inn boasts a good selection of wine, with many vintages available by the glass. To accompany my meal I ordered a large glass of La Ronde, a medium-bodied French that was very easy to drink. We finished our meal in fine style with an irresistible sticky toffee pudding with honeycomb ice cream and a beautifully light crème brûlée. Family-owned and operated for several generations, this attractive venue is now in the capable hands of Peter and Linda Hendrie. As well as offering an excellent meal, those wishing to explore the area can stay in one of the beautifully decorated guest bedrooms, some of which are even dog-friendly. The team has excellent connections in the area, and can arrange a wealth of outdoor pursuits for guests, from an Exmoor Safari to mountain biking, riding, fishing and clay pigeon shooting.

Bath & Somerset Guide 2019

A quiet serenity underpins the luxury on offer at The Gainsborough. This impressive hotel and spa spans two Grade II listed buildings in the heart of historic Bath. We were instantly enthralled by the subtle opulence and elegant styling that greeted us. On our arrival we took a seat in the Gainsborough Bar, which is tucked away from the main lobby for an intimate atmosphere. Our friendly mixologist offered us a taste of the bespoke cocktail service; after just five simple questions we heard the satisfying clink of shaken ice and our cocktails were soon served. My lychee-infused Tequila Sunrise was enhanced by lashings of lime and an edible flower garnish. As our glasses emptied, we perused the restaurant’s enticing menus; a difficult choice between the five-course, seven-course and à la carte offering. We opted for the seven-course tasting menu – a stunning arrangement of esteemed head chef Dan Moon’s specialities – and accompanying wine flight. Each wine pairing is explained in enlightening detail by the expert front-of-house team. Seated in the restaurant, we welcomed the arrival of a selection of miniature loaves of bread with assorted butters, which preceded that of the rich chicken tea amuse-bouche, which was poured from a pretty Japanese teapot. The Jerusalem artichoke velouté that followed was creamy beyond belief and elevated by sumptuous goat’s curd, black truffle and sherry vinegar gel. Smoked fillet of beef was next on the agenda; it came topped with foie gras, horseradish cream, fennel and a pané quail’s egg. The dish was beautifully constructed and revealed from under a smoke-filled cloche for added theatre. Leading up to the main of roast Creedy Carver duck with confit spring roll, plum and sesame was my personal favourite: sautéed scallop with sumptuous shellfish risotto, king prawn, delicate beads of yuzu and seaweed. Dry and fruity chenin blanc matched the zesty yuzu and cleansed the palate between each delightful mouthful. The duck was followed by the highly anticipated dessert of chocolate delice with salted caramel ice cream, vanilla mousse and hazelnuts. Decorated with cranberry sorbet, lemon balm, meringue and passion fruit sauce, the triumphant finale came in the form of a stunningly presented lemon mousse. The cuisine at this three-AA-rosette-awarded restaurant is exquisite; each dish is presented with confidence and served with abundant knowledge.

There’s no whispering or stiff-backed chairs here, just the pleasure to be had from an immaculately refurbished and comfortable restaurant. The restaurant is situated within the grounds of historic Bailbrook House Hotel, surrounded by 18th-century grandeur and opulence. Impeccably polished cutlery, crisp linens and gleaming glassware set the scene for first-rate dining experiences.

‘…immaculately refurbished and comfortable…’ Our meal began, for me, with the super smooth and peppery mushroom pâté, while my dining companion relished the al dente poached asparagus that married beautifully with morel mushroom vinaigrette. I followed with a 21-day-aged flank of beef atop buttered spring cabbage with horseradish gnocchi and Madeira jus, which took simple flavours and amplified them for tremendous effect. The slow-cooked beef, in particular, was incredible, and you’d never guess it was a so-called lesser cut from its tenderness. My partner, meanwhile, appreciated the cod fillet with saffron potato risotto and samphire. The minute cubes of potato that made up the risotto were bite-sized pieces of heaven, and everything combined to result in one utterly delicious plate of food. We finished with the kind of indulgent desserts you dream of as a child – the chocolate brownie with raspberry sorbet put a smile on my face before we left.

‘…the kind of indulgent desserts you dream of…’ Our expectations of an establishment with an atmosphere like Cloisters were very high, but the constant string of delights that we were presented with proved just how good this restaurant really is. It comes as no surprise that they’ve been awarded two AA rosettes. We’ll be back to sample the Sunday lunch soon.

The quintessential country pub setting is delightful, but the real draw of The Cotley Inn is the excellent menu. Farm to fork is the overriding ethos here, and much of the produce is sourced from the surrounding farmland. The game on the menu is often from local shoots and the kitchen team goes to great lengths to source the best seasonal produce. I opted to start with a rich and creamy leek and potato soup. My Open: Tues-Sat wife chose equally well with the noon-3pm, 6pm-11pm; pub platter – a homemade pork Sun noon-3pm, 6.30pm-10pm pie, scampi, a Scotch egg and melting blue cheese croquettes. Appetites sufficiently whetted, we moved on to the eagerly anticipated main course. After much deliberation I settled upon the roasted lamb rump with Dauphinoise potatoes, minted pea purée and a red wine jus and was delighted with my choice.
