MODAK

Since Ganesh Chaturthi is just around the corner, Modaks top our list. It is one of the most popular sweet, and any Chaturthi celebration is incomplete without a modak. Although many varieties of Modak are available in the market today, there is nothing that can beat a classic homemade modak.

Ingredients

For the filling:

1 cup grated coconut 1 cup jaggery A pinch of nutmeg A pinch of saffron

For the shell:

1 cup rice flour 2 tsp ghee 1 cup water

Method

Prepare filling:

Heat a pan and add the grated coconut and jaggery

Stir for about 5 minutes. Now add the saffron and nutmeg, mix well.

Prepare Modak:

Cook for another 5 minutes and keep aside.

Take a deep dish and boil water with ghee. Add some salt and flour, mix well.

Cover the dish and cook till half done.

Spread the base of the steel bowl with some ghee and knead the dough while it is still hot.

Take a little dough and roll it into a ball. Flatten the ball well and shape the edges into a flower pattern.

Take a spoonful of filling and put it onto the dough, then seal it.

Put the dumplings in a muslin cloth and steam them for 10-15 minutes .

Total Cook Time: 40 minutes.

Ready to serve!

PURAN POLI

Puran Poli is another popular sweet dish prepared and relished during Ganesh Chaturthi. So get going with this simple recipe and give your family and friends a sweet reason to rejoice.

Ingredients

For filling:

1 cup Chana Dal, washed. 1 cup sugar. 1 tsp cardamom powder. Grated nutmeg 3 cups of water.

For the dough:

2 cups maida. 1 tsp salt. 2 tbsp ghee. 1 cup water.

Method

Firstly prepare the Dal mixture:

Pressure cook the chana dal for about a minute with water.

Drain all the water and mash the Dal coarsely.

Pour the mashed Dal into a cooker and add sugar to it.

Mix it well and cook slowly. Add nutmeg and cardamom powder and mix thoroughly. Stir on low flame till it gets dry. Cool down the mixture.

Take maida in a bowl. Add ghee and salt, and mix well. Add sufficient water to make a soft dough. Wrap the bowl with a damp cloth or plastic sheet and let it rest for 30 minutes.

Flatten the dough like for chapatis Dust it with maida and using a roller give it a round shape. Fill the puran(filling) in it, cover the edges and again roll it into a round shape. Heat the tawa and using enough ghee cook both sides of the Puran Poli. Ready to be served with some more ghee poured over.
