Additionally, Olymel is focused on ensuring the safety and quality of the products we offer our customers and have implemented many strategic initiatives to ensure we are leading the industry in healthy eating and food safety. Below are just a few of the things we have done to ensure we are serving the best quality meats in all of our customer markets. Lower Sodium, Reduction of Allergens Since 2012 the sodium content in all our processed poultry has met government recommendations.
In 2017 we reduced sodium in our hams, sausages, bacon and deli meats putting these products well within industry recommended standards. All new products launched since 2012 meet Health Canada’s recommendations for sodium content. In 2016 more than 50%of Olymel products sold at retail, to restaurants and to institutional clients contained no allergens.

Thinking About Tomorrow Means Seeing to the Proper Care and Health of Farm Animals At Olymel we understand that being able to offer our customers healthy and quality products starts at the farm. We ensure that all of our farm animals are treated ethically and humanely, and we have lead the charge in improving practices related to the care and handling of animals in the industry. All producers and suppliers we work with, as well as, Olymel staff comply with codes governing best practices in the industry. A few of the initiatives we have spearheaded and implemented include: Responsible Use of Antibiotics Olymel limits the use of antibiotics in all meat we provide and ensure our chickens are brought up in a antibiotic-free husbandry. Prevention of Suffering Olymel ensures that none of our animals ever suffer by utilizing tools like special devices to help facilitate the peaceful transfer of birds, roofs on trailers to protect animals from rain and wind while transferring, trailers with hydraulic floors to reduce stress for the animals and heating systems in holding areas. Additionally, we employ CO2 anesthetization which has shown to be one of the most humane, stress-free ways to process a chicken. Free Stalls for Gestating Sows Since 2012, Olymel has committed to the use of stalls that allow the free movement of sows.

Thinking About Tomorrow Means Preserving the Environment for Future Generations by Reducing Pollution and Waste Just as animal welfare is one of our top priorities as an organization, environmental protection is just as important. Olymel has established three key priorities to help us ensure we are operating our business efficiently and sustainably: 1. Reduce our energy consumption, greenhouse gas emissions and noise pollution; 2. Reduce our water consumption; and 3. Reduce and recover by-products. We will achieve these objectives by implementing various tactics across our business to ensure our corporate footprint is as minimal as possible. Tactics include:
Using special tools to analyze and preserve electricity consumption.
Provide training in areas of energy bills, energy management practices, green processes, etc.
Implement technologies to reduce fuel consumption, optimize travel and power supply units on electricity instead of dyed diesel.
Track and monitor the consumption of potable water, production facilities equipped with waste water and treatment equipment.
Declare a “zero landfill” policy regarding non-edible meats and agrifood biosolids; incorporate a purchasing strategy that favours the supply of materials in bulk; and increase the potential of recycled packaging.
