Causeway Bay is a land blessed with much of everything. So much so that it can be an assault on the senses and a daunting endeavour for those not in the know. Many in our fair city avoid the culinary delights of CWB because they have no idea where to find them and the sheer thought of seeking them out is too extraordinary a task to tackle. Fear not, gentle gastronomes, for we have done the culinary exploring for you and have found food-lands so aplenty that these pages runneth over. You shall never again find yourself amongst the hectic streets, wondering where in the world to dine, only to seek the safety and sorry offerings of a chain coffee company. Within these pages, we explore the kitschy, the classy, and the casual, and we beat the streets to find the best that different areas of Cover image courtesy of CWB have to offer and we separated Dickens Bar out the speciality shops, so when you’re in the mood for something sweet or special, you’ll know just the streets to point your stomach towards. Read on, Causeway Bay has depths and tastes you’ve never seen…

雙城吧 DIC KE NS BAR Named after the famous Victorian novelist, the Dickens Bar is almost as traditional as the author himself. It has been in the basement of the Excelsior since 1973, and has been a regular stomping ground for avid sports fans. Its walls are adorned with autographed memorabilia, such as Boris Becker’s tennis racket. With its rare UK pints and hearty curry lunches, this place is a must-go. Dickens Bar

UG, The Excelsior Hong Kong, 281 Gloucester Road, 2837 6782

SC HO OL FO O D This light Korean eatery is heavily influenced by K-pop culture. The shop owner has mixed and matched traditional Korean cuisine with K-pop music and interior design. His use of both traditional and fusion recipes (try the Carbonara Tteokbokki) has meant that this trendy joint has become a popular dining place for the hip and the fashionable. Shop 1302, 13/F, Times Square, 1 Matheson Street, 2480 3666

香巴拉 T HE HE RBIVORES Great oaks from little acorns grow, goes the saying, which couldn’t be more applicable to this little homegrown restaurant. This kitchen’s thoughtful and innovative grasp on vegetarian and vegan cooking is unparalleled. With Chef Wendy Leung at its helm, you must try the Portobello mushroom steak and their zucchini rolls. 9/F, Hysan Place, 500 Hennessy Road, 2613 2920

四姐川菜 SIJIE SICHUAN R E S TAUR ANT A former private kitchen, Sijie’s authentic Sichuan flavours pack a bite, even if the basic décor is nothing to write home about. The portions are quite generous, so it’s best to go with a group and order family style so that you can taste a selection of classic mouth-watering (and numbing) dishes, such as twice-cooked pork, fish poached in chilli oil, and Chongqing fried chicken. 10/F, Bartlock Centre, 3 Yiu Wa Street, 2802 2250

The Herbivores

南小館 TH E DIN IN G RO O M A bright and airy modern Shanghainese spot with quirky décor (bicycles are one of the key design elements). Pull up a chair at one of the restaurant’s communal tables and get ready for a feast that’s easy on both the eyes and the pocketbook. The pork soup dumplings and pan-fried buns are must orders, and you can’t go wrong with the well-seasoned wok-fried string beans with minced pork: wok hei to the max. Shop 1201, 12/F, Hysan Place, 500 Hennessy Road, 2648 2299

LE CAFÉ H A B ITAT There is a certain je ne sais quoi that makes this Parisian café, located inside the Habitat furniture store so memorable. Have a taste of classic French staples with a twist, and it will dispel all notions that unspecialised café-type restaurants don’t serve good food. But are there sweeping views over Victoria Harbour, I hear you ask? Mais oui! 15/F, Windsor House, 311 Gloucester Road, 2310 1964 afoodieworld.com 07

FRITES Belgium on Tap

金田家 KANADA-YA Sure, it’s another ramen branch. But the food is simply delicious. You only have a choice of three types of ramen – normal, lite, and supreme – immersed in a pork broth that takes 15 hours to prepare. The pork shoulder gives you that melt-inyour-mouth experience that is, frankly, quite hard to get anywhere else. 34 Tang Lung Street, 2889 3355

F R I T ES BE LG IUM ON TAP With the widest variety of Belgium draught and bottled beers (more than 80!) on offer in Hong Kong, FRITES transports you right into the heart of Europe, with its brasserie-style décor and high ceilings. If you’re ever guessing how many ways you can cook mussels, FRITES will always one-up you with its impressive range of methods.

Jamie's Italian

JAMI E' S ITALIA N Jamie Oliver, the UK’s favourite cheeky-chappy chef, opened his first HK branch of this global casual Italian restaurant chain with a bang in 2014, and it’s been packing in the punters ever since. Some of our favourite dishes – all plentiful in portion and reasonably priced – include the planks (cured meat and fish or seasonal veggies served on wooden boards), garlicky prawn linguini, and juicy grilled lamb lollipops. It’s a great spot for a low-key night out with friends or dining with little ones in tow.

YA K I NIKU FUTAGO

BRUN CH C LUB & SUPPE R

You’ll see lots of restaurants in Causeway Bay with yakiniku as part of their name – meaning “grilled meat” in Japanese. In our not-so-humble opinion, Japanese chain Futago is the best of the bunch. It’s tiny, so book in advance for the opportunity to grill yourself some excellent Japanese beef. The ventilation isn’t that great, so ditch the gladrags.

No one is going to tell you off for having breakfast for supper here. Serving breakfast all day err’day, their Eggs Benedict is to die for. Their chilled, laidback vibe makes them the perfect refuge for any time of day. What’s more, get on those croissants, muffins, and Angel’s Food cakes like there’s no tomorrow; we won’t tell.

四季禅 SHIKI ZE N Move over, ramen – this light and modern Japanese restaurant puts a spotlight on an often underrated, but equally delicious, noodle from the Land of the Rising Sun: udon. Both Sanuki-style (traditional thick-cut, bouncy-textured noodles) and Kyotostyle (softer and thinner noodles, served cold) udon are on the menu; they are made in-house daily using Japanese flour, salt, and water – that’s dedication! – and are served with a variety of ingredients and soup bases. Although Shiki Zen’s sushi and teppanyaki are also noteworthy, for us it’s all about the silky, chewy udon. 29/F, Soundview Plaza 2 - Midtown, 1-29 Tang Lung Street, 2970 3218

韓雅林 HAN AH RUM We first found out about this restaurant from a Korean friend who works for the Association of Korean Restaurants in Hong Kong, so we knew it had to be good. Now it’s become our go-to spot for Korean barbecue. The various cuts of meat are all high quality, but it’s the super-sized galbi (beef ribs) that bring on the meat sweats – not that we’re complaining. The complimentary banchan are not mere afterthoughts either, but tasty little dishes in their own right. 6/F, Causeway Bay Plaza 1, 489 Hennessy Road, 2877 7716

南記粉麵 NAM KE E SPRIN G

RO L L N O O D L E COMPAN Y With a number of outlets around the 852, affordably-priced Nam Kee began selling its famous spring rolls from a cart in 1980. We like to choose our own toppings depending on what we’re craving on the day, but we always go for the sour and spicy soup base with thick and chewy flat rice noodles. 1–3/F, San Kei Tower, 56–58 Yee Wo Street, 2576 3721

N O . 5 I TAL IAN Expanding from its cosy spot in Tai Hang, this charming pizzeria’s popularity is still on the rise. The thin-crust pizzas and homemade pastas never

disappoint; we’re especially fond of the Ernest’s style pizza, No. 5’s take on a margherita with fresh basil and mozzarella. Simple ingredients done right will never go out of style. Shop 311, Level 3, World Trade Centre, 280 Gloucester Road, 2554 2228

鼎泰豐 DI N TA I F UN G We’re never too impatient to queue up for this Taiwanese chain’s signature xiao long bao in all their soupy, porky glory. Their reasonably priced dumplings and noodles are a big hit with kids, too. 68 Yee Wo Street, 3160 8998

何洪記 HO H UN G KE E Now with a coveted Michelin star to its name and glitzy décor befitting its prime Hysan location, this congee and wonton noodle shop has come a long way from its humble beginnings in the 1940s. Ho Hung Kee hasn’t got too big for its britches, though – the prices are still fairly easy on the pockets. Shop 1204–1205, 12/F, Hysan Place, 500 Hennessy Road, 2577 6060 afoodieworld.com 09

The Good Food Tour: Dim Sum Edition

King’s dumplings in lobster bisque from Dim Sum Bar

Who says dim sum is only appropriate as a brunch meal during the day? For the fifth edition of foodpanda's Good Food Tour, we hopped across the harbour to TST to hit up some eateries that serve dim sum all day, every day. With a deepseated history in Chinese Canton cuisine and the obvious plethora of dim sum restaurants in Hong Kong, we were eager to discover what would set these three eatery choices apart. Our first stop was Dim Sum Bar, a restaurant that serves up innovative, East meets West-style dim sum. We started off with plump har gows swimming in fresh, rich lobster bisque. The baked abalone and chicken pastry was an immediate favourite, with its buttery flaky crust, piping hot and salty chicken filling, and a crown of juicy and chewy abalone. The baked barbecued pork cream buns with minced ham came a little toasted on the top, crispy and airy, with light layers that flaked apart at the bite. The steamed rice flour rolls with crispy rice nest was impressively delicate. We moved on to our second destination on Hau Fook Street, Caterking. The East meets West theme continued with perigord truffle and scrambled egg white dumplings; combining the overpowering truffle with lightly whipped egg whites and firm shrimp created a perfectly umami flavour pairing in a soft rice skin pocket. A sweet and thick dough on their baked barbecue pork buns rounded out a great selection. Our last stop of the night was The Dining Room at The One, where we dug into the pan-fried pork dumplings with a crispy golden net. Of course we had to try the xiao long bao at this Shanghainese dumpling joint, so we opted for one with a black truffle twist, along with their signature pan-fried crispy pork soup buns. The skin on the top was pillowy, with a crispy bottom and a nutty flavour. We chose the crispy rice dumplings with pomelo, 12 afoodieworld.com

maltesers glutinous dumplings, and green tea and red bean paste sweet balls to finish. Just when we thought we knew it all about dim sum, foodpanda proves that there's always more options to be explored. And just because we've spent a whole night sampling dim sum certainly does not mean we won't be back for more - in fact, with all the new suggestions we have up our sleeves, we are already looking forward to our next weekend yum cha. The to-die-for harbour views (especially at night) and spacious outdoor seating area are the main attractions of this rooftop bar and restaurant, but visitors will also be impressed by Talk of The Town’s extensive list of cocktails and super-indulgent free-flow weekend brunch. This spot is always at the top of our list when we’re dressed to impress or entertaining out-of-town visitors.

楽壽司 KISHO KU Opened by a chef from another stellar CWB sushi bar, Sushi Ta-ke, Kishoku’s omakase menus showcase premium seasonal Japanese ingredients prepared beautifully. A meal here is definitely a wallet buster, so save it for a special occasion – or go for a relatively bargain-priced set lunch. 5/F, ZING!, 38 Yiu Wa Street, 2893 0333

Elegant Pak Loh has consistently ranked amongst the best Chiu Chow restaurants in HK for years. Chiu Chow cuisine is much subtler in flavour than many of its regional Chinese counterparts, allowing the ingredients to shine. Our must-order dish here is the sliced goose and tofu, poached in a lightly spiced, fragrant broth. 23–25 Hysan Avenue, 2576 8886

竹壽司 SU SHI TA- KE We feel like we’ve been transported to Tokyo every time we step inside this elegant Japanese restaurant, where sushi and sashimi are the stars of the show. The fish is beautifully fresh, the rice perfectly textured, and the sushi artfully formed. We dream about their luscious fatty tuna. To really push the boat out, opt for one of the restaurant’s omakase menus, which also feature grilled and simmered dishes and soul-warming seasonal soups. 12/F, Cubus, 1 Hoi Ping Road, 2577 0611

翠亨邨 T SU I HANG VI LLAGE You’ll think you’ve died and gone to char siu heaven after sampling a bite of this long-standing Cantonese’s restaurant honey-glazed barbecue pork (made with either pork from China or Japanese pork, which is slightly richer): it’s crispy yet tender with the right amount of glistening fat. 22/F, Lee Theatre Plaza, 99 Percival Street, 2409 4822 22 afoodieworld.com

BUDAOW E N G HOTPOT CUISIN E More upscale than most hotpot joints in Causeway Bay, Budaoweng stands out for its prime ingredients and Japanese influences (both sake and sashimi can also be ordered). We never get bored here, dipping an assortment of veggies, dumplings, seafood, and hand-cut beef slices into a cauldron of bubbling broth (take your pick from a variety of soup bases) that is consistently refilled by staff. 雲陽 Y UN YA N Your lips may be on the numb side after a meal at this stylish Sichuan restaurant, but that’s the price to pay for a meal this good. Traditional Sichuan dishes like mapo tofu and kung pao chicken are interspersed with a smattering of more creative offerings like the lamb rack and rice cakes in wild mushroom sauce. If you can’t take the heat, not everything is knock-your-socks-off spicy; the housesmoked duckling is a more subtle delight if you want to maintain your composure and ensure a dry brow while still enjoying a delicious dish.
