All student-athlete and coaching staff interviews must be arranged through Gage Peake in the Nebraska Media Relations Office at least one day in advance. The best time to interview student-athletes and coaches is before or after weekday practices. Generally, the Huskers will practice from 3:45 to 6 p.m. on weekdays. The best time to reach Head Coach David Harris for interviews during the week is before Noon in his office. Previews will be provided each week the Huskers compete. Rosters, releases and results will be available at Huskers.com.
Notice of NCAA Probation
From 2007 to 2010 the University of Nebraska unintentionally reimbursed student-athletes for recommended textbooks as well as required textbooks through a failure to properly administer and monitor book scholarships. Only reimbursement for required books is permissible under NCAA rules. As a result, the NCAA placed the University of Nebraska on two-year probation, beginning in January of 2012. The NCAA did not impose additional penalties such as loss of scholarships, forfeiture of games, or a ban on postseason play. Rather, as a condition of probation, Nebraska will continue to educate student-athletes and staff thoroughly on NCAA bylaws and will notify prospective studentathletes of its probationary status.

Woody Greeno/Nebraska Invitational The Woody Greeno/Nebraska Invitational celebrates its 23rd year of competition this fall as one of the largest annual races in the Midwest. Team and individual champions will be crowned in the University and College divisions, with nearly 700 athletes vying for the title. Held at Pioneers Park in southwest Lincoln, the meet began in 1990 when Nebraska Wesleyan combined its meet (the Woody Greeno Invitational) with Nebraska’s annual meet (the Nebraska Invitational) to form what is now the largest cross country event in the state. Nebraska has captured 11 men’s titles and 17 women’s titles. Most recently the Husker women won the 2011 crown, after claiming four straight University titles from 2006 through 2009. Nine athletes have captured 12 individual titles, including Fran ten Bensel, who won three consecutive titles in the 1990s, and Lara Crofford, who won back-toback titles in 2009 and 2010.
Nebraska competes at Pioneers Park, which holds a challenging 5,000-meter course that rolls over the tree-covered hills in the 900-acre park.

ACADEMIC SUCCESS The success of Nebraska student-athletes reaches far beyond athletic competition. More Husker student-athletes have been selected to CoSIDA Academic All-America teams (299) than any other school in the nation, and Nebraska has produced more NCAA Top Eight Award winners (16) than any other school. As it enters its second season of Big Ten Conference competition in 2012-13, Nebraska continues to set the standard for the approximately 1,400 NCAA member institutions. The Husker football team leads all individual sport programs in the nation with 102 all-time CoSIDA Academic All-America awards. The Penn State football program ranks second among all sports nationally with 60 all-time academic All-Americans. In fact, Nebraska's 102 football academic All-Americans would rank among the top 25 schools (all sports, all divisions) in the nation in the number of CoSIDA Academic All-Americans. The NU volleyball program has captured more academic All-America awards (36) than any other women’s team in the nation, while the Husker softball program ranks second on that list with 29 selections. Nebraska also ranks among the top 10 schools in the nation in CoSIDA Academic All-Americans in baseball, women's basketball and men’s and women’s track and field/cross country. Over the past two years, the men's and women's track and field programs have produced 10 CoSIDA Academic All-Americans - the most in the nation during that span.
Huskers Build on Academic Tradition in 2011-12
Husker student-athletes produced another stellar year at the University of Nebraska, continuing NU’s tradition of academic success. Nebraska increased its nationleading total of CoSIDA Academic All-Americans across all sports to 299 with a Big Ten Conference-leading eight honorees in 2011-12. A total of 190 Husker studentathletes captured academic All-Big Ten honors, while Huskers earned 667 All Sports as of August 2012 spots on the Nebraska Scholar-Athlete Honor Roll during the fall and spring semesters.
Academic All-Americans 299
The Nebraska football team led an impressive showing in the classroom for the Huskers, as Austin Cassidy, Rex Burkhead and Sean Fisher all claimed CoSIDA Academic All-America honors. Cassidy, who became the 24th Husker football player in history to be a twotime academic All-American, earned first-team honors as a senior safety. Cassidy was joined on the first team by Burkhead, who rolled to 1,357 rushing yards as a junior I-back in 2011. Fisher, a junior linebacker, added second-team CoSIDA Academic All-America accolades. A total of 47 Husker football players earned bachelor's degrees in 2011-12, while 27 Huskers earned academic All-Big Ten awards.

Track and field All-Americans Tyler Hitchler and Ashley Miller led an impressive season for Coach Gary Pepin’s program. Hitchler, an All-American on and off the track during his career, claimed Nebraska’s Male Student-Athlete-of-the-Year award. A firstteam All-American in the discus in 2012, Hitchler was also NU's male recipient of the Big Ten Medal of Honor. A two-time Nebraska Student-Athlete HERO Leadership Award winner and a four-time member of the Nebraska Student-Athlete Advisory Committee, Hitchler was accepted into medical school at the University of Nebraska Medical Center, and along with Miller was chosen as a recipient of a $7,500 NCAA Postgraduate Scholarship. Miller, a three-time All-American on the track, was a cocaptain of both the NU women's cross country and track and field teams in 201112. The 2011 CoSIDA Academic All-American was NU's female recipient of the Big Ten Medal of Honor and the women's track and field team's Big Ten Sportsmanship Award winner. The track and field program added a trio of 2012 CoSIDA Academic AllAmericans, led by senior Bjorn Barrefors who became just the 13th Husker in history Top: Nebraska Student-Athletes of the Year Ashley Miller (left) and Tyler Hitchler (right) earned multiple All-America awards for the Husker track and field program. Middle: Ashley Miller earned her bachelor’s degree as a dietetics major from Nebraska in the spring of 2012. Miller, who claimed a prestigious NCAA Postgraduate Scholarship in 2012, was a second-team CoSIDA Academic All-American in 2011. Bottom: Jesse Adams earned his bachelor’s degree as a finance major from Nebraska in the spring of 2012. A three-time academic all-conference selection, Adams was also a standout in the community as a 2012 Nebraska Student-Athlete HERO Leadership Award recipient.

THE NEBRASKA ACADEMIC EXPERIENCE
From the day student-athletes decide the University of Nebraska is the right place to be, the athletic academic counseling unit provides personal and academic support to ensure that student-athletes will get the most out of their years as Huskers. Featuring one of the most innovative and comprehensive academic support systems in the country, Nebraska is dedicated to helping its student-athletes become outstanding leaders in their chosen fields. The academic support team is comprised of 13 full-time staff members and a tutorial staff of approximately 75 tutors addressing all subject areas.
Academic Counseling
Eight academic counselors and three assistant academic counselors are in place to monitor daily academic progress, receive consistent course feedback, assist with the advising/registration process and monitor continuing eligibility and progress toward graduation. Essentially, academic counselors assist student-athletes in navigating the University of Nebraska system.
Tutorial Support
A tremendous resource for all academic abilities, unlimited tutorial support is available from day one up to college graduation. Subject and mentor tutors help provide academic support and study strategies to be successful. Supplemental Instruction, a sub-component of the tutorial program, provides targeted group review sessions to help ease the transition to college academics while improving study strategies and building academic self-esteem.
Study Hall
Nebraska’s study hall program is housed in the D.J. Sokol Enrichment Center within the Student Life Complex. Student-athletes attend a supervised, flex-time study hall that features day, evening and weekend hours. Each student-athlete is required to complete a specific number of study hours each week as determined by their academic counselor and/or coach. In addition, weekly study hall reports are provided to the coaching staff. Additional performance-based or tutor-based study hall may also be determined by the academic counselor.
Mentoring
Many student-athletes meet with a mentor on a weekly basis to assist in making a smooth transition from high school to college. Mentors collect syllabi, gather and report academic progress information and teach academic success strategies.
Educational Assessments
Assessments are administered upon the request of the student-athlete, academic counselor, or coach to determine student strengths and areas for improvement. Results allow academic counselors to develop a personalized academic support program and to determine if more in-depth testing is warranted. When additional assessments are necessary, referrals are made to a consulting psychologist who conducts the assessments. If it is determined that a student-athlete has a learning disability, appropriate accommodations are made through the Office of Services for Students with Disabilities.
Student-Athlete Orientation
The academic staff coordinates New Student-Athlete Orientation to help newcomers adjust to the multiple demands of being a college student-athlete. Presentations are made by academic counselors, compliance officials, NU faculty and administrators, business/community professionals and student-athletes.
Personal Counseling
Student-athletes will find a supportive and caring environment at Nebraska. Transitional issues, stress management, time management, academic focus and problem resolution are all addressed in a proactive manner throughout the year. If necessary, counseling referrals are also made to designated practitioners.
Computer Resources
Student-athletes enjoy a new state-of-the art computer lab and technology center with 58 computers and professional supervision. Laptops are also available during team travel. Student-athletes have the benefit of ongoing education and assistance from a full-time computer technician.

Tom Osborne
Athletic Director Sixth Year Hastings (1959)
Hall of Fame football coach Tom Osborne has continued to leave a lasting impression on the history of Nebraska Athletics since returning to lead the Husker program as the school’s 13th athletic director on Oct. 16, 2007. Osborne, who led Nebraska to three national championships (1994, 1995, 1997) and 255 victories in his 25 years as the Huskers’ head football coach, has continued to use his impressive leadership skills to guide the NU athletic department as a whole over the past four seasons. With the core values of integrity, trust, respect, teamwork and loyalty serving as guiding principles for Nebraska’s 23-sport program as a whole, Osborne has made historic decisions to help the University of Nebraska athletic programs for years to come. In June of 2010, Osborne joined Nebraska Chancellor Harvey Perlman and Big Ten Conference Commissioner Jim Delany to announce the Huskers would join the Big Ten beginning on July 1, 2011. Nebraska’s move to the Big Ten will continue to add University-wide academic opportunities, while providing financial stability for the athletic department for years to come. Just a few months later, Osborne announced an aggressive expansion plan for the east side of Memorial Stadium that will increase attendance past 90,000 for the first time, while continuing Nebraska’s NCAA record-setting sellout streak. The expansion, which is set for completion before the 2013 football season, will include athletic and academic research components. In the spring of 2010, the city of Lincoln also received voter approval to begin construction on the 16,000-seat Pinnacle Bank Arena, which will serve as the new competitive home for both Nebraska men’s and women’s basketball programs beginning in 2013-14. The basketball programs, the wrestling program and many of NU’s other sports also have benefitted from the new Hendricks Training Complex at the Bob Devaney Sports Center. The facility, which opened in October of 2011, includes practice and team areas, and greatly expanded athletic medicine and strength training areas. The Nebraska baseball and softball programs also received a new indoor practice facility that opened in the fall of 2001 at Haymarket Park. The first step in Osborne’s aggressive building plan for Nebraska’s facilities began in the summer of 2010, as the Huskers broke ground on the Student Life Complex on the west side of Memorial Stadium. The complex, which opened in the fall of 2010, directly benefits every Husker student-athlete with expanded academic resources. While Osborne has helped initiate landmark moves off the field, he has continued to help coaches and student-athletes focus on Nebraska’s tradition of competitive success. In 2011-12, 10 Husker teams finished among the top 25 in the nation, including the Nebraska football team’s New Year’s Day appearance in the Capital One Bowl. One of Osborne’s first major decisions as athletic director was to hire Bo Pelini as the Huskers’ football coach. Pelini, who had spent the 2003 campaign as NU’s defensive coordinator, has energized Nebraska’s storied tradition with four consecutive nine-win seasons. Pelini’s Huskers have finished among the Associated Press top 25 in each of the last three seasons. The football program also contributed three CoSIDA Academic All-Americans to Nebraska’s nationleading total of 299 all-time, across all sports. Coach Mark Manning’s Husker wrestling program added a pair of CoSIDA Academic All-Americans. On the mat, NU tied for 21st at the NCAA Championships despite entering the season in what appeared to be a rebuilding year. The tradition-rich NU volleyball program captured the Huskers’ first-ever Big Ten Conference title in any sport in 2011, finishing No. 12 nationally while advancing to the second round of the NCAA Tournament. Coach John Cook’s squad has claimed four conference crowns since Osborne’s return to Nebraska. The Husker women’s gymnastics team led by Coach Dan Kendig added its first Big Ten championship, while finishing eighth nationally in 2012 for its third straight top 10 finish. The Nebraska women’s indoor track and field team contributed another Big Ten title. Coach Gary Pepin’s men added a tie for 11th
at the NCAA Championships during the outdoor season for its best team finish since 2003, after tying for 23rd at the NCAA Indoor Championships. The NU men’s and women’s track and field teams have combined for four conference crowns, while producing eight top-20 finishes over the past five years. The NU women’s basketball team produced one of its best seasons in school history by rolling to a 24-9 record that included a run to the Big Ten Tournament championship game. Coach Connie Yori’s Huskers finished No. 17 in the final AP poll and advanced to the NCAA Tournament for the third time since Osborne’s return to Nebraska. The 2010 Huskers ran to the best season in school history with a Big 12 title and an NCAA Sweet 16 berth in 2010. Coach Scott Jacobson led the Nebraska women’s tennis team to the best season in school history in 2012, posting a school-record 24 wins and No. 16 final ranking. The Huskers advanced to the second round of the NCAA Tournament, marking the third straight season the team has advanced to the postseason. The Husker men’s tennis program added its first two NCAA appearances in school history in 2010 and 2011. Coach Bill Straub’s bowling team added a third-place finish at the 2012 NCAA Championships, marking the program’s fifth straight top-eight showing. The Husker bowlers claimed the 2009 NCAA title. The Husker softball team made three consecutive NCAA Tournament appearances from 2009 to 2011, while the Husker women’s golf and baseball programs both earned NCAA Regional bids in 2008. Osborne made his second coaching hire since his return to Nebraska, when he named two-time Major League All-Star, three-time Gold Glove award winner, and former No. 1 MLB Draft pick Darin Erstad as the baseball team’s new coach on June 2, 2011. Erstad was not only one of the best Husker baseball players in history, he was the starting punter on NU’s 1994 national championship football team coached by Osborne. The baseball program responded by posting a 35-23 record in his first season. It marked a five-game improvement in the win column over 2011. Osborne made another high-profile hire with the addition of men’s basketball coach Tim Miles on March 24, 2012. Osborne also hired former Husker Stacy Underwood as NU’s fourth rifle coach on May 24, 2012. Academically, Nebraska produced eight CoSIDA Academic All-Americans in 2011-12, increasing its nation-leading total to 299 all-time, across all sports. NU also graduated a school-record 155 student-athletes from August of 2011 through May of 2012. Before being asked by Chancellor Perlman to return to Nebraska as athletic director in 2007, Osborne served three terms in the U.S. House of Representatives (Nebraska’s 3rd congressional district) from 2000 to 2006. He returned to academia following a 2006 gubernatorial bid, serving as a senior lecturer at Nebraska in the College of Business Administration, teaching leadership and business ethics, in the fall of 2007. Osborne also worked as a consultant for local college athletic departments for two years. Osborne and his wife, Nancy, continue to pour their time and support into the TeamMates mentoring program, which they founded in 1991. TeamMates provides encouragement to school-aged youth to help them graduate from high school and pursue a post-secondary education. Osborne’s leadership of the TeamMates program began while he was putting the final touches on one of the best coaching careers in college football history. The Hastings, Neb., native, who earned master’s and doctoral degrees in educational psychology from the University of Nebraska, was named NU’s 25th head coach following the 1972 season. In 25 seasons with Osborne at the helm, the Huskers mounted a 255-49-3 record - the sixth-most wins in major college history. Osborne’s .836 winning percentage ranked fifth all-time. His career came to a close with a 42-17 win over No. 3 Tennessee in the 1998 Orange Bowl, when he became the first coach in college football history to retire as a reigning national champion. Following his career, he became one of just four coaches in history to have the mandatory threeyear waiting period waived for induction into the National Football Foundation College Hall of Fame in December of 1998. Osborne’s 1994 and 1995 teams allowed Nebraska to become just the second school in history to post back-to-back perfect national championship seasons (Oklahoma 1955-56). Nebraska put together the best five-year run in college football history from 1993 to 1997, going 60-3 with five straight 11-win seasons. Osborne led NU to 13 conference crowns, including six of his last seven seasons on the sideline. All 25 of his Husker teams won at least nine games and went to a bowl, while 15 won 10-or-more games. In the classroom, the NU football program totaled 65 CoSIDA Academic AllAmerica awards in Osborne’s 25 years. In fact, he accumulated more football academic All-Americans in his 25 years as coach than any other football program in the nation has produced in its history. Prior to becoming head coach, Osborne spent five seasons under Devaney, helping the Huskers win back-to-back national championships in 1970 and 1971. In 1973, Osborne succeeded Devaney, who also served as Nebraska’s Athletic Director from 1967 to 1993. Osborne and his wife, Nancy, have three adult children, Mike, Ann and Suzanne and four grandchildren.

Meet the Huskers
Isabel Andrade Junior, Co-Captain
24 | nebraska Cross Country | 2012
Husker Women Begin Rebuilding for Future A young Nebraska women’s cross country team will begin a new era with Coach David Harris at the helm in 2012 with the challenge of replacing four talented seniors from the 2011 squad. Ashley Miller, Jessica Furlan, Erica Hamik and Katie White made up the nucleus of Nebraska’s team for the past several seasons, helping the Huskers to a sixth-place finish at the 2011 NCAA Midwest Regional and a seventh-place showing in their first Big Ten Championships. In addition to the losses of four strong 2011 seniors, the Huskers also will be challenged by the loss of junior Martina Barinova. One of Nebraska’s top runners as a freshman in 2010, Barinova battled to overcome injuries during the 2011 cross country season and the 2012 track season. She competed in only two cross country meets a year ago. This season she is expected to redshirt while trying to recover completely from the injuries that sidelined her a year ago. With the heavy losses among Nebraska’s top runners, Isabel Andrade is expected to be a leader for the Huskers in 2012. The junior from Petaluma, Calif., lettered for NU as a sophomore and competed at the Big Ten and NCAA Midwest Regional championships. She also performed well in the classroom, earning academic All-Big Ten honors. She notched a career-best sixth-place finish in a time of 19:54.72 at the UNO/Creighton Invitational, before posting a career-best time of 18:38.7 at the South Dakota State Classic. She closed the year by finishing 70th at the Big Ten Championships and 85th at the Midwest Regional in DeKalb, Ill. “Isabel has a tremendous work ethic and will be a great benefit as a captain this cross country season to the young athletes we have on our team,” Harris said. “It is now her time to step up and lead the team as an upper-class runner.” Fellow junior Sarah Plambeck is expected to be another key returner for the Huskers. The Lincoln Christian High School graduate will join Andrade as a captain for the 2012 squad after earning her first cross country letter as a sophomore a year ago. Plambeck, who finished 80th at the 2011 Big Ten Championships and 135th at the NCAA Midwest Regional, posted a season-high fifth-place finish at the Creighton/UNO Classic last season. She
Sarah Plambeck is one of five returning letterwinners for the Huskers in 2012. The junior from Lincoln will serve as one of Nebraska’s three co-captains on the women’s side this season.

also performed well in the classroom, joining Andrade on the academic AllBig Ten squad. “Sarah will be one of our women’s captains this year,” Harris said. “Her dedication during her junior season should result in some nice performances as one of the upper-class runners on our team.” Sophomores Sarah Larson and Hannah Edwards will also look for improvement while providing leadership for the younger Huskers. Larson, a Lincoln native, demonstrated her talent in her first season of competitive cross country at any level in 2011. A Nebraska all-state softball player at Lincoln Northeast High School, Larson’s softball commitments limited her distance training to the track in high school. However, she made a quick adjustment to collegiate cross country training as a freshman. After a top10 finish at the Creighton/UNO Classic to open the season, she posted a career-best time of 19:00.0 to take 23rd at the SDSU Classic. Although she did not compete at the Big Ten Championships, she finished 137th at the NCAA Midwest Regional meet to close her freshman season. Edwards, a native of Whittier, Calif., competed in three meets as a freshman, making her final appearance at the Woody Greeno/Nebraska Invitational. With just four healthy returning cross country runners on the roster, Nebraska will rely heavily on incoming freshman runners who will make a difference in their first year of competition. Sophomore transfer Jessica Wright will be eligible to compete in her first season for NU this year. A native of Bellevue, Neb., Wright spent last fall at Marquette University. She earned All-Metro cross country and track and field honors while in high school, and has a bright future for the Huskers. Tess Keller, a native of Sparta, N.J., will also be a force for NU this season. Keller recorded numerous top-10 finishes in the New Jersey State Interscholastic Athletic Association Group Championships in track and cross country. Sarah Dweikat will also be a freshman contributor this season. Dweikat, a Lincoln native and Lincoln East graduate, has competed in the Nebraska track and field championships, and recorded a sixth-place finish at the 2011 Nebraska cross country championships. Nebraska’s young team will face the challenge of going head-to-head with a talented Big Ten Conference. Five Big Ten teams finished among the top 30 in the nation in 2011, led by Michigan State, which closed the year in 12th at the NCAA Championships. Michigan added a top-15 NCAA finish, while Penn State (22nd), Wisconsin (28th) and Minnesota (30th) lead the list of talented Big Ten foes. Before competing against the best the runners the conference has to offer at the Big Ten Championships in East Lansing, Mich., on Oct. 28, the young Huskers will begin laying their foundation for success with the season-opening Creighton/UNO Classic in Omaha on Sept. 1. Two weeks later the Huskers will play host to the Woody Greeno/Nebraska Invitational at Pioneers Park in Lincoln on Saturday, Sept. 15, at 10 a.m. Nebraska returns to the road for the KU Rim Rock Farm Classic on Sept. 29, before competing at the Wisconsin adidas Invitational on Oct. 12. Following Nebraska’s second appearance at the Big Ten Championships, the NCAA Midwest Regional will be held in Springfield, Mo., on Nov. 9. The NCAA Championships are set for Nov. 17 in Louisville, Ky. “I think that it’s a must that we schedule low key at the start of the season before we hit the meat of our schedule,” Harris said. “We are trying to build momentum going into the Big Ten Championships in East Lansing.

Meet the Huskers Jarren Heng
Junior, Co-Captain
34 | nebraska Cross Country | 2012
Young Huskers Hope to Lay New Foundation Under Harris The Nebraska men’s cross country team will have almost an entirely new look in Coach David Harris’ first season at the reins of the program. Not only did the Huskers graduate four seniors from former Coach Jay Dirksen’s final NU squad, but senior Trevor Vidlak will redshirt in 2012, and senior Tommy Brinn will see a light work load due to an injury suffered in the spring. Another returning runner redshirting will be junior Connor Gibson. Vidlak, a Lincoln native and returning captain for NU, will be missed after performing at a high level the past two seasons. Vidlak earned Nebraska’s Most Valuable Cross Country Runner award in 2011, as well as NU’s Most Improved Runner honor in 2010. During the 2011 season, Vidlak was at his best at the SDSU Classic in Brookings, S.D., winning the individual meet title in 24:46.7. Brinn, a native of Otsego, Mich., had a successful junior season for NU. He performed at his best at the SDSU Classic, where he placed 12th in 26:14.6. The heavy losses from last year’s squad will present both challenges and opportunities for Harris and a young Husker team. “This will by far be the youngest team to compete in this program’s history,” Harris said. “I keep telling my team that we need the younger kids to step up so we can make strides into the future, due to the fact that we do not have many seniors this season.” Nebraska’s top active returning runner in 2012 will be Jarren Heng. The junior from Norfolk, Neb., will be counted on to lead a young Husker squad in training and competition, while improving his times from a year ago. “The expectations are high for Jarren, both in leadership and performance,” Harris said. “He has put in the work to make progress in his running career at the Big Ten level. He will be one of our men’s captains and with that comes incorporating all of our freshmen into the 2012 season. That could play a pretty big part in the future success of this program in the years to come.” Heng performed at a high level throughout his sophomore campaign, posting a pair of top-five finishes on the year. He took second at the Creighton/ UNO Classic in a time of 27:31.24. He added another runner-up finish two weeks later at the South Dakota State Classic, posting a time of 25:25.9 to help the Huskers capture a team title. Brett Grieb, Anthony Pittman and Dani Dapo will join Heng as runners expected to lead the young Husker squad in 2012. Grieb, a junior from York, Neb., hopes to continue his improvement while adding veteran leadership on and off the course. He competed in three meets in 2011 and posted a personalbest time of 28:48.1 at the Woody Greeno/Nebraska Invitational. Grieb captured third-team CoSIDA Academic All-America honors in 2011-12.
Jarren Heng is expected to be the top runner for Nebraska in 2012. The junior co-captain from Norfolk, Neb., will lead NU’s young runners this season.

2012 Returning Runners (8) Tommy Brinn, Dani Dapo, Connor Gibson, Brett Grieb, Jarren Heng, Anthony Pittman, Alney Tobias, Trevor Vidlak Returning Letterwinners (4) Tommy Brinn (1), Connor Gibson (1), Jarren Heng (1), Trevor Vidlak (2) 2012 Newcomers (9) Taylor Anders, Matt Bloch, Matt Gilbert, London Hawk, Jonah Heng, Sidney Madlock, Jacob Olson, Adam Procknow, Aron Sebhat 2011 Departed Runners (5) Jesse Adams, Brad Doering, Grant Duffy, Peter Falcon, Adam Mitteis Pittman also will enter his third year in the cross country program after redshirting in 2011. The sophomore from Omaha plans to regain the success he found on the course as a freshman, while improving his times to help lead the Huskers. Pittman hopes to be one of the Huskers’ top-seven runners in 2012. Dapo, a native of Omaha, will also be looked upon to lead the young group of Huskers this season. Dapo will be competing in his last season with NU, and will be one of the only seniors competing for the Huskers in the fall. Dapo will add depth to the team this year, and will likely be a top-seven runner. With only four returning runners expecting to make significant contributions for the Huskers this year, Nebraska’s eight-member freshman class will be counted on to make immediate contributions. One of Nebraska’s most talented recruits in recent history, Jonah Heng, a native of Overland Park, Kan., could have a bright future for NU. “Jonah probably has the best distance credentials with his performance at the Midwest Regionals last year in high school. He just missed going to Nationals, and then backed that up with a 9:06 two mile that broke the Kansas state high school record.” Aron Sebhat, a native of Skokie, Ill., is a touted recruit for NU. The Niles North High School graduate had a phenomenal prep career, and owns multiple records at the school. “Aron will make an impact on day one for the Huskers,” Harris said. Another incoming freshman who could contribute right away is Jacob Olson. The native of Kearney earned Nebraska Gatorade Runner-of-the-Year honors as a senior. “Olson is one of the top runners coming out of the state this year,” Harris said, “and has the potential to become a great runner.” Matt Bloch, a native of Valley Village, Calif., will also be one of NU’s top freshman runners coming into the 2012 season. Bloch recorded several top-10 finishes at the California track and field championships, as well as a fifth-place finish in cross country. Adam Procknow, a native of Cary, Ill., will look to adjust to the longer distances covered in collegiate cross country this year. Procknow will add depth to the young Huskers and will look to build strength in the coming years. Matt Gilbert, a standout runner from Fenton, Mich., will also look to add depth for NU. Gilbert brings solid credentials from Michigan, where he earned all-state and all-region honors. Taylor Anders, a native of Greeley, Colo., could contend for a spot in the Huskers’ top seven this season. Anders recorded numerous top-10 finishes at the Colorado track and field championships, while also competing in the cross country state championships. The tough task of taking on more extensive training to help conquer both longer races will challenge the first-year Huskers. An even greater challenge for the freshmen-laden team will come with the strength of the Big Ten. Defending NCAA champion Wisconsin headlines a group of five Big Ten teams that finished among the top 30 in the nation in 2011. Indiana closed the year in seventh at the NCAA Championships to join the Badgers in the top 10. Michigan took 17th and Minnesota closed the year 19th to contribute a pair of top-20 NCAA finishes for the conference, while Ohio State added a 30th-place showing at nationals. “Expectations for the freshmen may be too high for their first season,” Harris said, “but in the end it will help build a strong foundation for success in the future.”

If Brinn is unable to build a training base early in the season because of limitations caused by his injuries, he could take a redshirt season in 2012. Brinn started his junior campaign with a pair of top-20 finishes for Nebraska, including a sixth-place performance at the Creighton/UNO Classic in Omaha (28:11.18). The native of Overland Park, Kan., could contend for one of the Huskers’ top spots as a freshman, according to Coach David Harris. “Jonah probably has the best distance credentials with his performance at the Midwest Regionals last year in high school,” Harris said. “He just missed going to Nationals, and then backed that up with a 9:06 two mile that broke the Kansas state high school record.” Before Nebraska (Shawnee Mission West) Heng was a standout runner at Shawnee Mission West High School in Overland Park, Kan. He earned a seventh-place finish at the 2010 Kansas state cross country championships, and added an eighth-place showing in 2011. He was also an academic all-state selection in cross country. Personal The son of Nick and Julie Heng, Jonah was born Aug. 21, 1994. Jonah joins his cousin, Jarren, as a member of the Nebraska cross country team. He plans to major in civil engineering at Nebraska.
Jacob Olson

He was a Lincoln Journal Star Super-State selection in both 2010 and 2011. He won the Class A state cross country title in 2010 and finished runnerup in 2011. Personal The son of Sandi and Jon Olson, Jacob was born March 14, 1994. He is majoring in chemical engineering at Nebraska.
