USKER AARON H BABCOCK

S P O R T S | Fall 2018

Fall 2018 | H U S K E R S P Tre O R TBryant S 15

With the dawn of the season upon us, Coach Scott Frost’s plan will be tested on the field

THE WAIT IS OVER BY NATE ROHR @RohrOfTheCrowd

The offseason honeymoon after Scott Frost’s hiring gives way to a season of unknowns. How quickly can the Nebraska offense adapt to Scott Frost’s new scheme? How quickly will the Blackshirts adjust to their third defensive coordinator in four years? And can a punchless Husker defense, which generated only 12 takeaways and 14 sacks, morph into a big-play defense like the one Erik Chinander ran at UCF (32 takeaways, 27 sacks last year)? Helping to answer those questions immediately will be a class of newcomers that includes five junior-college transfers.

QUARTERBACK

The questions start at quarterback. Redshirt freshman Tristan Gebbia and true freshman Adrian Martinez will battle throughout fall camp, and perhaps longer, for the right to lead the Husker offense. Gebbia, a pro-style quarterback, and the dual-threat Martinez, both ran the Red offense in the spring game. Martinez was one of the first prospects called by Frost after he was hired at Nebraska, while Gebbia was recruited by the prior staff. Frost has said little about how either ranks, and both will be a factor this season.

RUNNING BACK

Another wide-open race is at running back. Tre Bryant ran for nearly 300 yards in the first two games last season, but chronic knee problems ended his season early and kept him out of spring ball. Mikale Wilbon and Devine Ozigbo split starting duties after Bryant went down, but neither claimed the I-Back job definitively. Jaylin Bradley also got limited work as a freshman. Junior college transfer Greg Bell, who averaged six yards per carry at Arizona Western, was on campus this spring and will compete immediately.

16

H U S K E R S P O R T S | Fall 2018

RECEIVERS

The Huskers are well-stocked at wide receiver, starting with Stanley Morgan Jr., who returns after setting a school record with 986 receiving yards last year. J.D. Spielman, who distinguished himself in his freshman year, could be a gamechanger in the new offense both as a receiver and ballcarrier. Tyjon Lindsey, who had a quiet freshman year, could be similarly dangerous. After redshirting with an injury as a true freshman, Jaevon McQuitty will look to emerge. At tight end, Jack Stoll, Kurt Rafdal and Austin Allen will battle to replace the graduated Tyler Hoppes.

OFFENSIVE LINE

A decent amount of experience returns on the O-Line, led by left guard Jerald Foster, who started all 12 games and served as a captain last year. Two-year starter Tanner Farmer returns at right guard, while Brenden Jaimes, who started nine games as a true freshman, moves from right tackle to left tackle to replace Nick Gates. Cole Conrad is expected to start at center after splitting the starting job with Michael Decker last year. Decker retired from football during the spring due to injuries.

DEFENSIVE LINE

All six players from last year’s D-Line twodeep return and are looking for increased production. The Huskers struggled both in controlling opponents on the ground (allowing 5.6 yards per carry) and slowing down their passing game (only 14 sacks). Ben Stille had 3.5 of those sacks at outside linebacker and will move to defensive end this year. Mick Stoltenberg anchors the middle after starting every game at nose tackle last year while serving as a team captain. Carlos Davis looks to build on last season at defensive end, where he totaled four tackles for loss and 2.5 sacks.

LINEBACKERS

Nebraska will have to replace the graduated Chris Weber, who led the team in tackles with 95. Junior college transfer Will Honas has made a strong case that he’ll be able to plug into that spot. The four-star prospect comes to Nebraska after making 96 tackles last year at Butler CC in Kansas. He’ll play alongside Dedrick Young II, who is only the fourth player in school history with 200 career tackles before his senior season. On the outside, another newcomer, Breon Dixon, is expected to make an immediate impact. Dixon transferred from Ole Miss after

18

H U S K E R S P O R T S | Fall 2018

one year and received an NCAA waiver to play right away. He was a four-star recruit in Georgia. Luke Gifford will return to the other outside spot after missing the last five games and spring ball with a hip injury.

DEFENSIVE BACKS

Nebraska has big holes to fill in the secondary with the graduation of Joshua Kalu and the depature of Chris Jones. The Huskers have significant experience at safety, as Aaron Williams (48 tackles, two interceptions) and Antonio Reed (42 tackles, one interception) both return. Lamar Jackson is also back after starting the last two years at cornerback, but is still looking for his first career interception.

SPECIAL TEAMS

Two freshmen will battle to replace four-year starter Drew Brown at kicker. Cole Frahm, a redshirt freshman, will battle Barret Pickering, a true freshman who was in for spring, for the job. Caleb Lightbourn improved last year after an uneven freshman year at punter. J.D. Spielman returned a kick for a 99-yard touchdown in the opener, and could be a force returning kicks this year. The punt returner job is open after the graduation of De’Mornay Pierson-El.

PLAYER TO WATCH

DEDRICK YOUNG II | SR. | LB

A three-year starter at linebacker, Young is just the fourth player in school history with 200 tackles before his senior season. With a good year, Young could end his career in the top five in school history in career tackles. This season, the Huskers are looking for more big plays from Young, after he had one sack, four tackles for loss and no interceptions last year. AARON BABCOCK

PLAYER TO WATCH

STANLEY MORGAN JR. SR. | WR

After setting a school record with 986 receiving yards, Morgan looks for a big senior season in 2018. He earned second-team All-Big Ten honors after snagging a career-high 61 catches with 10 touchdowns. He enters his last season at Nebraska with 1,743 receiving yards, just 238 yards from becoming the fifth receiver in school history with 2,000 career receiving yards and with the school career receiving yards record within reach. PLAYER TO WATCH

JERALD FOSTER | SR. | OL

Foster has been a mainstay at left guard for the Huskers ever since Foster rushed back from what was thought to be a season-ending knee injury in 2016 to play in the final four games of that season. Last year, the Lincoln Southeast product was one of two offensive linemen to start all 12 games while serving as a team captain. AARON BABCOCK

PLAYER TO WATCH

MICK STOLTENBERG | SR. | DL

Facing constant double-teams in the middle of the Husker defense, Stoltenberg held up for 12 games at nose tackle for the Huskers last season. The Gretna graduate ended the season with 33 tackles—more than doubling his output from his first two years—along with four tackles for loss. He’ll look to build on a great finale to last year: four tackles, two tackles for loss against Iowa. AARON BABCOCK

PART OF THE PROCESS Greg Sharpe sits down with new head coach Scott Frost

GREG SHARPE: Do you feel settled here yet, or does that take a full year to go through a cycle? SCOTT FROST: It’s a process kind of like getting our team better is a process. Anytime you move there’s a lot of complications that go along with that. Everybody is family here and we feel comfortable here. Kind of like the team continuing to improve, our quality of life and our comfort will continue to improve. GS: How’s the work ethic of the team? Do you see a difference from early on as you approach the season? SF: There’s definitely been improvement. I’m thrilled with the buy-in of the team and effort in the weight room, on the field, and in the classroom. The new guys are going to buy in to what we’re doing sometimes faster, because they won’t know a different way. We’re getting the older guys to change their habits and start having them work the way we want them to and both those things take a bit of time. GS: Earlier in the summer you had a chance to go out and visit communities around the state and get a sense of the passion and excitement. Did that hit home or surprise you? SF: I knew the passion was here, but the enthusiasm even surprised me. I can’t tell you how great of a reception we’ve gotten from the state. We’re thrilled to have a part in trying to make Nebraska what it should be again, and like I’ve said a bunch of times, it’s

going to be a process, but I know we have the state of Nebraska behind us. GS: How do you approach this daunting 2018 schedule? SF: We try not to look at the big picture. We want to look at what’s right in front of us. Right now, what’s in front of us is summer conditioning and summer school and making sure we are doing well in those areas. This is a good league. It’s going to be tough every year. Year one was going to be tough no matter what, as guys are figuring out our way of doing things. It’s going to be an even bigger challenge with the schedule we have. This year is going to be the first giant step on the way to something bigger. GS: Some rule changes for college football, one being that freshmen can play up to four games and save some eligibility. Do you like the rule and how do think you’re going to manage it? SF: I think the NCAA got this one right. We’re going to have a meeting as we get toward fall camp on how we want to handle it. A lot of the decisions won’t be made until after fall camp of who’s going to play full time as a freshman. The great thing is the ones that may or may not be ready to contribute their freshman year right away, still have an opportunity to play if they develop later in the year. We’ll still be able to use all the kids for depth and special teams and for them to get their feet wet with what college football games are like.

COACH SCOTT FROST

AARON BABCOCK

GS: Will this rule help keep players engaged and motivated all of fall? SF: It keeps guys engaged, keeps guys working their freshman year. It’ll help if we have any injuries. I want us to be smart in how we use it, but we’re smart if every one of our freshmen touches the field and gets a taste of college football. GS: Do you have the practice schedule figured out, when and what time of day you’re going to practice? SF: We’re practicing in the mornings. We are going to be a morning operation. Time will continue to adjust as we get that settled, but that helps our team be at its best, getting practice over with in the morning. We are

32

H U S K E R S P O R T S | Fall 2018

working with our student athletes’ schedules to make sure that’s possible, but I really believe in it and what it can help our team do. GS: You are the head coach of the Nebraska Cornhuskers. Has there been a moment where it has hit you that you now occupy this chair? SF: For the most part we just keep our heads down and do our work. It’s not often that you come up and smell the roses but walking out of the tunnel for the spring game and being back in that stadium brought back a lot of memories for me. We have a monumental task in front of us to try to resurrect and reignite this program, and we have everything we need to do it now it’s up to us to put in the hard work to get it there.

OF NEBRASKA

FOOTBALL ASSISTANT COACHES ERIK CHINANDER, Defensive Coordinator

The Blackshirts have struggled to generate turnovers, averaging only 17.4 takeaways per season since 2013. Erik Chinander seems equipped to turn that around, since his UCF defenses forced 58 turnovers in his two seasons as defensive coordinator. Chinander has coached nine years at four different stops with Scott Frost. He played college football at Iowa.

TROY WALTERS, Offensive Coordinator Troy Walters brings a decorated resume as a player and coach to the offensive coordinator job at Nebraska. While at Stanford, Walters totaled 4,047 career receiving yards and 26 career touchdown catches, winning the Biletnikoff Award as a senior in 1999. He then played eight years in the NFL and had 98 career catches. As a coach, Walters was a Broyles Award finalist after coordinating the top scoring offense in college football last season.

GREG AUSTIN, Offensive Line

Greg Austin started for the 2006 Huskers that won the Big 12 North Championship and played in the Cotton Bowl. He met Scott Frost in 2010 as a graduate assistant for the Ducks. After following Chip Kelly to the Eagles for three seasons, Frost hired Austin to coach the offensive line at UCF.

SEAN BECKTON, Tight Ends

Scott Frost’s first recruiting job was not for a future Husker, but rather for a coach. Despite playing at UCF, then coaching 19 years for the Knights, Beckton was persuaded to come to Nebraska. He’s already made a huge impact in recruiting, helping the Huskers pull several prospects from Florida and Georgia.

MIKE DAWSON, Defensive Line Mike Dawson is making the most of a second chance at coaching. After 14 years as a college coach, Dawson worked as an athletic director at a high school in Massachusetts. An old colleague, Chip Kelly, offered him a job with the Eagles. After three years with the Eagles, Frost hired Dawson as UCF’s D-Line coach. The Knights forced 58 turnovers and scored nine defensive touchdowns in two years.

JOVAN DEWITT, Outside LBs/Special Teams

Jovan DeWitt is smart enough to be a rocket scientist. Literally. After graduating from Northern Michigan with degrees in physics and mathematics, DeWitt turned down a job offer from NASA to coach. DeWitt succeeded Scott Frost as UNI’s defensive coordinator, and helped the Panthers to two playoff appearances in three years. After coaching at Florida Atlantic and Army, Frost hired DeWitt at UCF, where DeWitt coached linebackers and served as special teams coordinator.

H U S K E R S P O R T S | Fall 2018

FOOTBALL ASSISTANT COACHES TRAVIS FISHER, Defensive Backs

Travis Fisher uses his experience from nine years as an NFL defensive back to coach Husker DBs. Playing alongside Hall of Famer Aeneas Williams, Fisher piled up 341 tackles and nine interceptions, including four pick-sixes. A UCF graduate, Fisher spent four of his first five years as a coach at his alma mater. In his last two seasons with the Knights, UCF picked off 35 passes, fifth in the nation.

RYAN HELD, Running Backs

A former Husker walk-on, Ryan Held has brought a dogged approach to the recruiting trail in helping Nebraska restock the talent on the roster. Held played for the 1994 and 1995 national champions, then served as an undergraduate assistant coach for the 1997 champions. Held collected another national title ring as a graduate assistant at Tennessee in 1998. After 12 years as a head coach at the Division II, NAIA and junior college levels, Frost hired Held at UCF to help direct the Knights’ high-powered offense.

BARRETT RUUD, Inside Linebackers

Nebraska’s school record holder with 432 tackles, Ruud returns to a program for which his father, uncle and great-grandfather played. A third-team All-American for the Huskers in 2004, Ruud broke Jerry Murtaugh’s school record for career tackles, then played eight years in the NFL for Tampa Bay, Tennessee, New Orleans and Houston. Ruud began his coaching career in 2016 as a quality control administrator for UCF. This is his first full-fledged coaching job.

MARIO VERDUZCO, Quarterbacks

The most veteran member of the Husker staff, Mario Verduzco brings 41 years of coaching experience to the table as he works with Nebraska QBs. His work with McKenzie Milton at UCF may have been his best. Milton directed a Knights offense that was the top scoring offense in the country in 2017, as Milton threw for 4,037 passing yards and 37 touchdowns. Frost and Verduzco crossed paths at UNI, where Verduzco coached quarterbacks from 2001-2014.

ZACH DUVAL, Strength & Conditioning

The Huskers have already made massive strides in the weight room thanks to the aggressive program of Zach Duval, Nebraska’s new strength and conditioning coach. Duval brings a deep background in Husker Power, as he worked 10 years and for three national championship football teams at Nebraska. After working as an assistant at Nebraska, Duval became the head strength coach at Buffalo, then spent two years at Wyoming before going with Frost to UCF in 2016. Football Scoop named him the Strength & Conditioning Coach of the Year in 2017.

ABOUT THE ZIPS Akron won the MAC East for the first time in 12 seasons, but the season ended with a thud, as the Zips were throttled in the MAC Championship Game by Toledo, 45-28, then blasted by Florida Atlantic in the Boca Raton Bowl, 50-3. After the suspension of starting quarterback Thomas Woodson, Kato Nelson moved into the starting role and led Akron to a 37-34 win over Ohio that put the Zips in the drivers’ seat for the division title. Nelson threw for 989 yards and eight touchdowns last year as a freshman. Little else returns for Akron on offense. Only four starters, including three offensive linemen, return from an offense that was 108th in scoring offense in the country last year. Nine starters return from an opportunistic Zips defense that helped Akron rank 19th in the country in turnover margin (+10). Senior linebacker Ulysees Gilbert, a first-team All-MAC performer last year, keys the defense. He led the team in tackles (140) and sacks (5), while also compiling 9.5 tackles for loss and three interceptions.

ABOUT THE BUFFALOES After winning the Pac-12 South in 2016, Colorado regressed to 5-7, its 11th losing season in the last 12 for the Buffaloes. Colorado started the year 3-0, but lost seven of nine to end the season. The departure of running back Phillip Lindsay leaves a big hole in Colorado’s offense. Lindsay set a school record with 301 carries, while rushing for 1,474 yards and 14 touchdowns. Virginia Tech transfer Travon McMillian will get the first shot to replace him. Steven Montez returns for his second season at quarterback. He also saw significant time in 2016. Montez hit 60.5 percent of his passes last year while throwing for 2,975 yards and 18 touchdowns. Colorado struggled against the run last year, allowing 5.23 yards per carry and 208 yards per game. Six returning starters, including four in the front seven, will try to be stronger in run defense. The secondary took a hit when Isaiah Oliver declared a year early for the NFL Draft. Oliver broke up 13 passes and had two interceptions last year.

ABOUT THE TROJANS Troy won seven games in a row to wrap up a share of the Sun Belt Championship last year. The Trojans are a combined 21-5 the last two seasons. There will be a new quarterback running the Troy offense after the graduation of four-year starter Brandon Silvers. Neither Kaleb Barker nor Sawyer Smith has stepped forward to take over as starting QB, and they’ll be competing with three-star freshman Gunnar Watson for the job when fall camp starts. The Trojans also lost their top two running backs, but Jamarius Henderson, who averaged 7.9 yards per carry last season in limited work, would seem like a solid option to replace them. Troy’s defense was one of the stingiest in the country last year, ranking 11th in scoring defense, seventh in rush defense and 24th in total defense. Six starters return from that unit. Linebackers Tron Folsom and Hunter Reese set the tone for the Trojans. Folsom led the team with 80 tackles, while Reese racked up 14.5 tackles for loss and 6.5 sacks.

ABOUT THE WOLVERINES A struggling Michigan offense got a shot of life from the NCAA in May when Ole Miss-transfer quarterback Shea Patterson was ruled immediately eligible for the 2018 season. In seven games last year, Patterson threw for 2,259 yards and 17 touchdowns for Ole Miss. The Wolverines offense was one of the worst in the country, sitting 105th in the NCAA in total offense and 91st in the country in scoring offense. Offensive coordinator Tim Drevno was fired and no new offensive coordinator has officially been named. While Michigan’s passing game struggled mightily (nine touchdowns, 10 interceptions), the run game was solid and will likely improve this year. Running backs Karan Higdon and Chris Evans, who combined for 1,679 rushing yards and 17 touchdowns return, as do three starters on the offensive line. The Wolverines defense has been ferocious under defensive coordinator Don Brown, and this year is likely no different. Michigan returns eight starters on defense, including the entire defensive backfield that led the nation in passing defense. Khaleke Hudson (eight sacks) and All-American Devin Bush (100 tackles) anchor a linebacker corps expected to lead the Michigan defense.

ABOUT THE BOILERMAKERS After winning eight games combined the three years prior, Purdue won seven games, including the Foster Farms Bowl, in Jeff Brohm’s first season as head coach. Purdue won despite both quarterbacks battling injuries. David Blough suffered a seasonending ankle injury Nov. 4, while Elijah Sindelar played the last three games with a torn ACL. Both return this year. The offensive line returns plenty of experience. Four of five starters return, led by senior center Kirk Barron and left guard Shane Evans. The Boilermakers were solid on defense last year, ranking 24th in the country in scoring defense, but only four starters return from the unit. The biggest defensive loss is linebacker Ja’Whaun Bentley, who led the team with 97 tackles. Middle linebacker Markus Bailey (89 tackles and seven sacks) is the top returner.

ABOUT THE BADGERS The Badgers may have their best offensive line in school history. Three All-Americans — left guard Michael Deiter, right guard Beau Benzschawel and right tackle David Edwards-return — to a Wisconsin O-Line that brings back all five starters. Running behind that offensive line will be Heisman Trophy candidate Jonathan Taylor, who ran for 1,977 yards and 13 touchdowns last year. He finished sixth in the Heisman voting last year as a freshman. Alex Hornibrook prepares for his third year as starting quarterback needing to take better care of the ball. Last year, he hit 62.5% of his passes with 25 touchdowns, but also threw 15 interceptions. Wisconsin ranked in the top-five nationally in all four major categories (rushing defense, passing defense, total defense and scoring defense), but only three starters return. Despite losing most of last year’s starting defense, last year’s top two tacklers return. Linebackers Ryan Connelly (88 tackles) and T.J. Edwards (81 tackles, four interceptions) will pace an inexperienced Badgers defense.

Certified Piedmontese beef tastes great: lean and tender, juicy and delicious. But there’s more to it than just flavor. Certified Piedmontese is a rich source of healthful protein, containing fewer calories and less total fat and saturated fat per serving than traditional beef. Great taste, great nutrition. ABOUT THE WILDCATS Northwestern has the best home schedule in the country. The Wildcats entertain Michigan, Nebraska, Wisconsin and Notre Dame at Ryan Field this season. If he’s healthy, quarterback Clayton Thorson could be one of the top signal-callers in the Big Ten. Thorson has 7,548 pass yards and 44 touchdowns in his career, but had knee surgery in January and may not be ready for the start of the season. The Wildcats will have to replace running back Justin Jackson, who paced the offense with 1,311 rushing yards and 11 touchdowns. Jeremy Larkin, who averaged an explosive 6.0 yards a rush on 84 carries, will have the first shot at it. An already tough Northwestern rush defense should be even tougher this year. After ranking ninth in the country in rush defense last year, the Wildcats return five starters from last year’s front seven. Northwestern’s season-ending eight-game winning streak was keyed by taking better care of the ball. After committing 12 turnovers while starting 2-3, the Wildcats gave it away just six times over the final eight games of the season.

ABOUT THE GOLDEN GOPHERS Minnesota returns no experience at quarterback. Conor Rhoda graduated, while Demry Croft, who ran for 183 yards and three touchdowns against Nebraska, transferred to Tennessee State. Running back Rodney Smith enters the season 1,260 yards from setting the school record for career all-purpose yards. Left tackle Donnell Greene anchors a solid offensive line that returns three starters. Minnesota ranked third in the Big Ten in rushing and fifth in sacks allowed. After missing most of last year with a hamstring injury, safety Antoine Winfield, Jr., returns. He was a Freshman All-American in 2016 with 52 tackles and an interception but went down in the conference opener. Middle linebacker Thomas Barber anchors a Gopher defense that returns seven starters. In his first year as a starter, Barber led Minnesota with 115 tackles.

ABOUT THE BUCKEYES Three-year captain and four-year starting QB J.T. Barrett graduated after setting Big Ten records for passing touchdowns (104), total touchdowns (147) and total offense (12,697 yards). But Dwayne Haskins made his case to start after leading OSU to a win at Michigan. Taking the heat off Haskins will be running back J.K. Dobbins, who churned out 1,403 rushing yards while gaining 7.2 yards per carry as a freshman. Backup Mike Weber is also proven. OSU also returns its top seven receivers. K.J. Hill (56 catches, 549 yards, three touchdowns) and Parris Campbell (40 catches, 584 yards, three touchdowns) headline an explosive group. The biggest question defensively is the linebacker corps. The lone returning starter, middle linebacker Tuf Borland, will miss the start of fall camp with an Achilles injury. Nick Bosa paces a big-play defensive line that helped Ohio State lead the nation with 114 tackles for loss. Bosa led the team with 8.5 sacks as a sophomore.

ABOUT THE FIGHTING ILLINI Illinois has struggled in conference play under Lovie Smith. In his two years as coach, the Fighting Illini are 2-16 in the Big Ten, including a winless showing last year. The picture got worse for Illinois as the season went along. Not only did the Illini lose the last 10 games of the season, Illinois lost the final five games by a combined score of 171-55. With both Chayce Crouch and Jeff George, Jr., leaving the program, Illinois had only one scholarship quarterback for spring ball: sophomore Cam Thomas. Former Husker AJ Bush and three freshmen will compete with Thomas in fall camp for the starting QB job. Trying to spark a struggling offense, Smith fired offensive coordinator Garrick McGee, replacing him with Rod Smith. Illinois was last in the Big Ten in scoring and next-to-last in total offense. Senior middle linebacker Del’Shawn Phillips returns after leading the team with 85 tackles. Last year’s starting secondary also returns for an Illinois pass defense that ranked 34th in the country.

ABOUT THE SPARTANS Nineteen starters return from a team that rebounded from a 3-9 season in 2016 to go 10-3 last year. Michigan State has won 10 games or more in four of the last five seasons. The vast majority of the Spartans’ offensive production returns. 100 percent of its passing yards, 100 percent of its receiving yards and 76 percent of its rushing yards return. Quarterback Brian Lewerke returns after a breakout sophomore season in which he threw for 2,793 yards, 20 touchdowns and nine interceptions. Nine starters return from a defense that was second in the country against the run, allowing only 95.3 yards per game. MSU ranked seventh in the nation in total defense and 19th in the country in scoring defense. The Spartans could be especially tough against the pass this season. The entire starting secondary returns from last year, including free safety David Dowell, who led the team with five interceptions.

ABOUT THE HAWKEYES Kirk Ferentz enters the 2018 season tied with Hayden Fry for most wins by an Iowa coach with 143 career wins. Ferentz begins his 20th season, tying Fry for longest tenured Hawkeye coach. Omaha South graduate Noah Fant could garner All-America attention at tight end. Of Fant’s 30 receptions last season, 11 were for touchdowns. Keegan Render will be expected to anchor an Iowa offensive line needing to replace two All-Big Ten performers. Last year, Render started nine games at right guard and three at left guard after starting the season opener at center. Iowa has to replace two All-Americans on defense – linebacker Josey Jewell (433 career tackles) and cornerback Josh Jackson (8 career interceptions). Only four starters return on defense, including no starting linebackers. The schedule is in Iowa’s favor, other than a road test at Penn State. The Hawkeyes get divisional foes Nebraska, Wisconsin and Northwestern at home.

ABOUT THE NITTANY LIONS Penn State has to find a way to replace running back Saquon Barkley, who set school records for total touchdowns (53), career rushing touchdowns (43) and career all-purpose yards (5,538). Junior Miles Sanders will have the first shot at it, rushing for 6.2 yards per carry in limited action last year. Trace McSorley is back for his final year in Happy Valley after leading the Big Ten in passing, with 3,570 yards and 28 touchdowns against 10 interceptions. Two three-year starters, tackle Ryan Bates and center Connor McGovern, anchor an offensive line that returns four starters from last year. Eight of 10 offensive linemen listed on the two-deep for the Fiesta Bowl are back. The Nittany Lions have huge questions defensively. Only two starters return from a defense that ranked sixth in the country in scoring and 17th in the nation in total defense. The biggest loss is safety Marcus Allen, who ranks fifth in school history with 321 career tackles. All four starters are gone from the secondary.

ABOUT THE HOOSIERS The only area on the field where Indiana returns any experience is the offensive line. The Hoosiers return four starters on the O-Line, but only five starters on the rest of the squad. In Tom Allen’s first full year as Hoosier head coach, IU came within one game of qualifying for a bowl game but lost 31-24 to Purdue in the final game of the regular season. After suffering a season-ending injury on the opening kickoff of the season, dangerous wide receiver Nick Westbrook returns. He had 54 catches for 995 yards and six touchdowns in 2016. The biggest loss for Indiana’s defense is linebacker Tegray Scales. A three-year starter, Scales piled up 89 tackles, six sacks and two interceptions.

ABOUT THE TERRAPINS After making a bowl game in DJ Durkin’s first season as head coach, injuries to Maryland’s top two quarterbacks in the first three games, among others, hampered the Terrapins in year two of the Durkin era. New offensive coordinator Matt Canada is installing a pro-style offense. Canada comes to Maryland from LSU, and has also run offenses at Pitt, NC State, Wisconsin and Northern Illinois. There’s plenty of material on offense. Running backs Ty Johnson and Lorenzo Harrison, who rushed for 1,497 yards last year return, as does the entire offensive line. The departure of wide receiver D.J. Moore leaves a huge hole. Moore had a school record 80 catches last year, with 1,033 yards and eight TDs. The defense is bolstered by the return of linebacker Jesse Aniebonam. After racking up nine sacks and 14 tackles for loss in 2016, Aniebonam broke his foot in the season opener last season, but returns healthy this season to a defense that returns just four starters from last year.

ABOUT THE SCARLET KNIGHTS Rutgers’ Big Ten schedule starts tough (week two vs. Ohio State), and ends tougher (at Wisconsin, Michigan, Penn State, at Michigan State). After struggling mightily last year on offense (121st in scoring offense, 129th in total offense), the Scarlet Knights have a new offensive coordinator. John McNulty comes back to Piscataway after serving as Greg Schiano’s offensive coordinator in 2007 and 2008. Rutgers will have to replace running back Gus Edwards, who ran for 713 yards and seven touchdowns as a graduate transfer, and wide receiver Janarion Grant, who battled injuries his last two seasons, but was a dangerous threat on the perimeter and in the return game. The Scarlet Knights were decent against the pass last year (55th in the nation), and could be again this year. The secondary has experience, with cornerbacks Blessaun Austin, Isaiah Wharton and Damon Hayes starting a combined 70 games in their careers. Rutgers will have to find new pass-rushers, as defensive ends Kemoko Turay and Sebastian Joseph were drafted last spring.

With fresh faces and young players, the Huskers will try to build on the successes of the past decade

AIMING FOR FOURTH STRAIGHT FINAL FOUR BY NATE ROHR @RohrOfTheCrowd

Two national championships and three trips to the national semifinals in the last three years have set the bar high for Nebraska Volleyball in 2018. But with only three starters returning from last year’s national champions, and only two players with more than one year of college volleyball experience on the roster, young players will have to step in and contribute immediately for the Huskers if they’re to meet the standards set the last three years.

FOECKE AND MALONEY LEAD YOUNG HUSKER TEAM

The only two upperclassmen on the roster, seniors Mikaela Foecke and Kenzie Maloney, will lead the team as captains this season. Foecke earned second-team All-America honors last year at outside hitter, leading the team with 441 kills, while earning her second NCAA Championships Most Outstanding Player award of her career after racking up 20 kills and 14 digs against Florida in the national final. Meanwhile, Maloney played every set as the Huskers’ libero, and set a school record with 13 aces in the NCAA Tournament. Both have started all three years of their Husker career. But this season, they’ll be called upon to lead the team. To help them grow into that role, Cook is calling on Director of Operations Lindsay Peterson to build Foecke and Maloney’s leadership skills. “They had been meeting all season long and will continue to meet over the summer just to

work on how to become great captains, and I’m really fired up with how they’re attacking this and how passionate they are about becoming leaders,” Cook said. They’ll be called upon to lead a roster with almost as many newcomers (seven) as returners (eight). “We have a lot of work to do this summer, and we’re labeling it ‘Operation Come Together’, because technically, seven of our players are new,” Cook said. “We’ve got to come together this summer pretty quickly, or we are going to get knocked out the first couple of weeks.”

YOUNG, BUT EXPERIENCED

While Foecke and Maloney are the only players with more than a year of college volleyball, there’s still some experience back for the Huskers. Three Huskers — Jazz Sweet, Lauren Stivrins, and Hayley Densberger — return after playing at least 30 matches and at least 85 sets last year as freshmen. Sweet, an

outside hitter, was fourth on the team with 277 kills, while Stivrins, a middle blocker, was fifth on the team with 259 kills. Stivrins also ranked second on the team with 127 blocks. Densberger, a serving specialist, had 10 aces last year.

ANOTHER TALENTED TRANSFER

In past years, John Cook has added talented transfers like Kelsey Robinson, Briana Holman and Lauren Cook. This year, the Huskers add Lexi Sun, who was named firstteam All-Big 12 after piling up 327 kills for the Longhorns. Like her head coach, Sun is a San Diego-area native. “We have a lot of ties,” Cook said. “Her club coaches all worked for me at one point, and so we tried to recruit her early on and didn’t get very far with her. Once we could get her

to visit, she fell in love with it. I don’t think there’s any better place to play volleyball.” Sun came to Texas as the Gatorade National High School Player or the Year and the MVP of the Under Armour All-American game in 2016.

BIG SHOES TO FILL AT SETTER

Kelly Hunter left a sizable legacy at setter for the Huskers. A two-time All-American, Hunter led the Huskers to two national championships and a pair of Big Ten titles. Heralded freshman Nicklin Hames will be the first to try to take her place. A Knoxville, Tenn., native, Hames won five state championships for the Webb School while playing for her mother, Chris. Four times, she was named the MVP of the state tournament in Tennessee, and was ranked the fourthbest overall prospect and top setter recruit in this class, according to PrepVolleyball.com.

LEANING ON TEAM LEADERS John Baylor sits down with volleyball coach John Cook

John Baylor: What is the mentality of the returning players? John Cook: We are not allowed to work with them in the summer. So, I can’t ask questions or comment on that, but they’ve all started back, they started workouts this week. When you have so many new players and then so many new open positions, that creates a lot of competition, so I think there’s some motivation for players. JB: Where was this program when seniors Mikaela Foecke and Kenzie Maloney arrived in 2015 and what have they meant in this ascent of Nebraska Volleyball? JC: They have a chance to do something that no other Nebraska Volleyball players have done. Which is win three National Championships or even potentially three Big Ten Championships. The second thing is that both those girls I think have played every match since they have been here, and both have performed at a really high level and they’ve accomplished as much as any Nebraska Volleyball player. We named them captains and now they get a new role of being leaders. They are our only two seniors and we have no juniors, so they have big loads on them as far as leadership.

school program. Mikaela was a great middle blocker, but we knew at college she probably wasn’t best suited to be a middle blocker. Her junior year of high school I said, “Hey. We’re going to recruit you. We are going to offer you, but we want you to be an outside hitter”, and she loved the idea. She’s from smalltown Iowa, farm girl, farm family, she’s a PreVet major, and is a typical Husker volleyball player, but just happens to be from Iowa. JB: You have a high impact transfer arriving this year in Lexi Sun. Do you take greater satisfaction in getting an elite fifteen-year old to say yes to Nebraska Volleyball, or an elite nineteen-year old who’s already been somewhere else to say yes? JC: I don’t know if it’s any different. We’re trying to find the right players for the right program. She’s from San Diego and I’m from San Diego, we have a lot of ties, her club coaches all worked for me at one point, and so we tried to recruit her early on and didn’t get very far with her. Most kids growing up in San Diego don’t know much about Nebraska. Once we could get her to visit she fell in love with it. I don’t think there’s any better place to play volleyball.

JB: What have Mikaela and Kenzie meant for your culture?

JB: You had unparalleled chemistry in the last title year 2017. How do you preserve that with the new comers?

JC: One of the reasons I wanted to recruit Kenzie is she’s the oldest of four kids, three younger sisters. She came from a very tough club program and a very successful high

JC: It’s a 24/7 process we’re going through with our performance team and with our captains trying to figure out what buttons to push. We have a lot of work to do this

summer and we’re labeling it ‘Operation Come Together’, because technically seven of our players are new. In volleyball it’s about relationships, they have to feel comfortable with each other, we have to make the new players feel comfortable.

JB: Annika Albrecht’s a player who couldn’t get to the front row her first three years here. Boom. She vaults to All-American status. What were you able to do? What was she able to do to suddenly make that leap in such a pivotal part in that title team?

JB: You’ve got to replace one of the greatest volleyball players, at least in the history of this program, and that’s Kelly Hunter. Any news on a transfer setter?

JC: We call that “training the complete athlete.” She bought in to her having to train the mental part, having to train the physical part, and with that comes good nutrition, getting in great shape, trying to become a better athlete. Then there’s the emotional part. So, the combination of those three things allowed her to play at the level she’s probably capable of and she was having fun. I think she knew she had a big role on our team and she could make a big impact and she really embraced that.

JC: We are continuing to work on that, and we can’t really say anything until we can cross the t’s and dot the i’s. It’s just taking time and that will be the final piece of the recruiting class is to get that done. Everybody’s here now and we just have to get them going. Like I said it’s “Operation Come Together.”

THE OFFICIAL CAR OF HUSKER VOLLEYBALL

BIG TEN VOLLEYBALL PREVIEW Wisconsin, Minnesota, and Nebraska will be the favorites to win the conference crown this year, though 17-time Big Ten champion Penn State shouldn’t be counted out.

NEBRASKA CORNHUSKERS (32-4, 19-1, Big Ten co-champs, National Champions)

Coach: John Cook (532-70, 19th year, 4 national titles) Quick Hit: Freshman Nicklin Hames takes over at setter and Texas transfer Lexi Sun will play outside with Michaela Foeke, who hit .293 and crushed 3.5 kills per set in 2017. Libero virtuoso Kenzie Maloney and Foeke go for their third national title in 2018.

ILLINOIS FIGHTING ILLINI (23-11, 12-8, tied 5th)

IOWA HAWKEYES (7-13, 18-15, tied for 10th)

Coach: Bond Shymansky (63-66, 5th year) Quick Hit: The NCAA Tournament Committee has left Iowa out of the tournament the last two years. Senior OH Taylor Louis smacked 3.4 kills per set last year and gifted setter Gabrielle Orr is back for her sophomore season to get the Hawkeyes over the bubble in 2018.

MARYLAND TERRAPINS (7-13, 18-14, tied for 10th)

Coach: Chris Tamas (23-11, 2nd year) Quick Hit: Tamas, a former Husker assistant, is leading a resurgence in Champaign, notching six more wins overall and two more conference wins in 2017 than the 2016 Illini had. Two All-American caliber seniors lead Illinois in 2018: setter Jordyn Poulter and MB Ali Bastianelli.

Coach: Adam Hughes (1st year) Quick Hit: Five Terps, including four starters, have transferred since Steve Aird stunned Maryland by announcing he’d be taking the Indiana job. Coach Hughes, a 4-year assistant under Aird, couldn’t stop those departures but has added three transfers to this program that was the final team left out of the 2017 tournament.

INDIANA HOOSIERS (1-19, 12-20, 13th)

MICHIGAN WOLVERINES (21-12, 11-9, tied for 7th)

Coach: Steve Aird (1st year – 55-74, in 4 years at Maryland) Quick Hit: Steve Aird takes over at Indiana after building Maryland the last four years. The Hoosiers will play in a new, muchneeded arena this fall. This year’s motto: New Coaches, New Facility, New IU. It will be a young team with only two juniors and no seniors.

102

H U S K E R S P O R T S | Fall 2018

Coach: Mark Rosen (384-244, 20th year) Quick Hit: Three-year starting setter MacKenzi Welsh leads the Wolverines after being an AVCA All-America honorable mention in 2016. Last year Coach Rosen took Michigan to the NCAA Tournament for the 16th time in 19 years, including the 2012 national semifinal.

MICHIGAN STATE SPARTANS (24-9, 14-6, 4th)

PENN STATE NITTANY LIONS (33-2, 19-1, Big Ten co-champs)

MINNESOTA GOLDEN GOPHERS (28-6, 15-5, 3rd)

PURDUE BOILERMAKERS (23-10, 12-8, tied for 5th)

Coach: Cathy George (244-170, 14th year) Quick Hit: Like Penn State, Purdue, and Nebraska, Michigan State has to replace a talented senior class. The 2018 Spartans will be young, with only two juniors. The lone senior is ex-Husker and ex-UCF OH Maddie Haggerty, who in two full years already at MSU has yet to play a match.

Coach: Hugh McCutcheon (162-43, 7th year) Quick Hit: Coach McCutcheon has designs on his second Big Ten Title and the program’s third ever. All American senior setter Samantha Seliger-Swenson leads a potent offense that includes sophomore right-side hitter Stephanie Samedy, a first-team AVCA All-American last year as a freshman, and third-team All-American outside hitter Alexis Hart.

NORTHWESTERN WILDCATS (4-16, 14-18, 12th)

Coach: Shane Davis (24-40, 3rd year) Quick Hit: Talent arrives this fall as the Wildcat freshman class is ranked 18th best in the country by PrepVolleyball.com (the 2017 freshmen were ranked 22nd). These six freshman and seven sophomores better deliver because the Cats have no seniors. Coach Davis won two titles in twelve years coaching men’s volleyball down the road at Loyola.

OHIO STATE BUCKEYES (15-16, 8-12, 9th)

Coach: Geoff Carlston (208-133, 11th year) Quick Hit: Taylor Hughes’ medical challenges have forced the fantastic lefty setter to retire after her junior year. Her successor is a transfer from Kentucky, Olivia Dailey, a former All-SEC setter who lost her job last year to Wildcat freshman phenom Madison Lilley. Attacker Jordan Fry is also leaving Kentucky for Ohio State.

104

H U S K E R S P O R T S | Fall 2018

Coach: Russ Rose (1,246-198, 40th year, 7 National Titles) Quick Hit: Penn State lost only two matches in 2017, both to Nebraska. The Lions are 0-7 vs. Nebraska over the last three seasons. Penn State always reloads, but this year the Lions replace one of the greatest senior classes ever.

Coach: Dave Shondell (324-175, 16th year) Quick Hit: Purdue is young and have just three seniors and two juniors. Danielle Cuttino is done and playing in Italy. Her 4.1 kills per set will be difficult to replace, though senior Sherridan Atkinson smacked 3.4 kills per set and hit .322 in 2017.

RUTGERS SCARLET KNIGHTS (0-20, 5-27, 14th)

Coach: CJ Werneke (72-219, 11th year) Quick Hit: Starting setter Megan Sharkey transferred to Creighton, saying, “I was just tired of losing.” Rutgers, only 39 miles from the UN, will dress seven foreigners this season, including four Russians. Four Scarlet Knights hail from the U.S.

WISCONSIN BADGERS (22-10, 11-9, tied for 7th)

Coach: Kelly Sheffield (135-35, 6th year) Quick Hit: Outside hitter Molly Haggerty, the 2016 Big Ten Freshman of the Year, returns after red-shirting with a bad back in 2017. Setter Sydney Hille was an Honorable Mention All-American last year as a freshman. The Badgers are loaded in the middle with senior MB Tionna Williams, also a 2018 Honorable Mention All-American, and sophomore Dana Rettke, a 6’8” First Team All-American last year.
