2017-18 NEBRASKA WOMEN'S TENNIS

HUSKERS FOCUSED ON TAKING NEXT STEP

The 2018 Nebraska women’s tennis team (back row, from left): Paula Del Cueto Castillo, Brianna Lashway, Jeannie Lozowski, Elizabeth Gould, Vasanti Shinde, Marina Cozac and M’Balia Bangoura, (front row, from left): Hayley Haakenstad, Claire Reifeis, Emma Worley, Katerina Matysova and Emily Rees.

The Nebraska women’s tennis program has its sights set squarely on a top-half finish in the Big Ten Conference and a bid to the NCAA Tournament in 2018. “We’re excited about the upcoming season,” Nebraska Coach Scott Jacobson said. “We believe that this is the highest level program we’ve had since our 2013 NCAA qualifying program.” After producing the best season in school history with a 24-6 record, a Big Ten Conference Championship and a trip to the NCAA Sweet 16 in 2013, the Huskers went through a rebuilding year in 2014. Jacobson, who was the 2013 Big Ten Coach of the Year after leading the Huskers to the conference title in just their second season in the league, took the Huskers a step forward in 2015 with a 12-12 record while moving into the spectacular Sid and Hazel Dillon Tennis Center. In 2016, Nebraska made more strides with a 17-8 overall record to solidify the upward trajectory of the program. Last year, the Huskers were knocking on the door of the NCAA Tournament, finishing with a 19-8 record, including a 16-2 mark at the Dillon Tennis Center. The Big Red knocked off Minnesota in the first round of the Big Ten Tournament, but the Huskers finished a step or two short of making the Big Dance. Now, with another year of experience under its belts, a Husker team loaded with talented juniors and sophomores is ready to break through behind proven seniors Katerina Matysova and Brianna Lashway. “With the return of the majority of our team as well as the addition of Brianna Lashway, Emily Rees and Marina Cozac, we believe that there is tremendous depth within our program,” Jacobson said. “In addition, we should be stronger in the

upper part of our lineup as well as the lower part of our lineup.” The Huskers, who return nine of 12 letterwinners from the 2017 roster are joined by transfers Lashway (Missouri) and Cozac (DePaul) and talented freshman Rees. “We are grateful to all three for entrusting us with their future,” Jacobson said. “We believe all will have a positive and powerful impact on our Husker family moving forward.” According to Jacobson, Lashway comes to Nebraska playing the best tennis of her college career. No stranger to the No. 1 spot, Lashway won 10 matches primarily out of the top singles spot in Missouri’s lineup last spring. As a sophomore, she won 18 singles matches and 20 in doubles play. Cozac is also expected to be a valuable addition to an already talented roster. “We believe Marina is going to set the standard for work ethic at Nebraska,” Jacobson said. “Not only has she proven to be a phenomenal player, Marina is also a phenomenal person.” Rees is expected to add a competitive edge to the Big Red roster, after choosing the Huskers over Wisconsin and Missouri among other schools. The new Huskers will help replace the departure of 2017 seniors Lisa Andersson and Mary Hanna, who combined for 30 singles wins last season. The 2018 Huskers will be led by senior captain Matysova, who went 13-0 in spring singles action, including 3-0 in Big Ten play, before earning her undergraduate degree in 2017. Matysova missed much of Big Ten play last year with an injury, but the Huskers still fought their way to a 5-6 conference mark and a bid in the Big Ten Tournament. The return of a healthy Matysova could go a long way in helping the Big Red climb in the final Big Ten standings.

Junior captain Paula Del Cueto Castillo also returns after recording 12 singles victories primarily playing in the top half of the Husker lineup last year. The Spaniard was also a Big Ten Distinguished Scholar and earned Nebraska’s Big Ten Sportsmanship Award for her leadership standards on and off the court. Del Cueto Castillo is joined by fellow juniors Vasanti Shinde and Elizabeth Gould. Shinde enters the spring with 33 career singles wins and 41 career doubles victories. Last year, she went 10-9 in the spring playing out of the top two spots in the Big Red lineup. Hayley Haakenstad serves as an anchor for the young Huskers as a third team captain. The sophomore from Chanhassen, Minn., notched 11 singles wins for the Huskers as a freshman in 2017. She also went 19-9 overall in doubles play. Haakenstad leads a talented group of returning sophomores that includes Claire Reifeis, Jeannie Lozowski, M’Balia Bangoura and Emma Worley. Reifeis, who won a singles championship at the Minnesota Invitational during the 2017 fall season, had one of the best freshman seasons in recent history with 20 singles wins, including a 1210 mark playing out of the top half of the Husker lineup in the spring. She also had a hand in 20 doubles wins as a freshman, including a 15-6 mark with Haakenstad. The duo went 13-5 during the spring, including 7-3 in Big Ten play. Lozowski posted 15 singles wins, including nine in the spring, while adding a 9-3 mark in doubles play a year ago. Bangoura pitched in nine singles wins and seven more in doubles as a freshman. Jacobson believes outstanding team chemistry will play a major role in NU’s success this season. “This is a cohesive unit that loves and cares about each other and loves competing as a team.”

SCOTT JACOBSON Head Coach 27th Season Blue Earth, Minn.

HONORS & AWARDS Big Ten Regular-Season Champions (2013) Big Ten Co-Coach of the Year (2012) Big 12 Coach of the Year (2005, 2010) Six NCAA Tournament Appearances (2005, 2006, 2010, 2011, 2012, 2013) Nebraska Herman Award (Team GPA) (2005, 2006, 2011, 2012, 2013, 2014) JACOBSON’S COACHING PHILOSOPHY “By helping our student-athletes develop the values of dedication, cooperation, compassion and the ability to handle adversity with courage, we help them grow as both tennis players and as people. Through a belief in one another and a positive approach to competition, we can build meaningful relationships off the tennis court and continue a winning tradition on it.” Entering his 27th season as Nebraska women’s tennis head coach, Scott Jacobson has had his Huskers consistently ranked among the top 75 teams nationally for nearly 20 years, while making regular NCAA Tournament appearances the past decade. A three-time conference coach of the year, Jacobson owns 389 victories at the helm of the Huskers and has averaged nearly 15 wins per season, while laying the foundation for the Nebraska program brick by brick since his first season in 1991-92. His program has been defined by consistent success. Nebraska produced 17 consecutive winning seasons from 1997 through 2013, with the Huskers producing a top-75 final national ranking 15 times. He has guided the Husker program to six NCAA Tournament bids in the past 10 seasons and led Nebraska to the Big Ten Conference regular-season title in 2013. From 2010 to 2013, Jacobson’s Huskers produced the most successful stretch in school history, winning 20 or more matches for four straight seasons to advance to four consecutive NCAA tournaments. The Huskers finished No. 16 in the final ITA rankings in both 2012 and 2013, including the program’s first NCAA Sweet 16 appearance in 2013. Since that Sweet 16 appearance, Coach Jacobson has been building the women’s tennis program back to a point of national prominence, aided by the addition of the world-class Sid and Hazel Dillon

Tennis Center. Over the past four seasons, the Big Red has more than doubled its win total from eight wins in 2014 to 19 victories in 2017. In 2017, NU had its most successful season since its Big Ten championship season in 2013. Under Jacobson, the 2017 squad amassed more than 140 individual singles and doubles wins in the spring alone. The team earned a national ranking at No. 39 and earned a spot in the Big Ten Tournament for the first time since 2013, where NU defeated Minnesota and advanced to the second round. The top-40 national ranking and Big Ten Tournament victory culminated a four-year process to reload the program after Nebraska lost several seniors from the 2013 season which produced the greatest team and individual season in school history. Not only did Nebraska finish with a No. 12 ranking and advance to the program’s first Sweet 16 in 2013, the Huskers experienced tremendous individual success as well. Mary Weatherholt, the greatest player in program history, capped her Husker career by finishing as the runner-up at the 2013 NCAA Singles Championship. Weatherholt was a first-team All-American in both singles and doubles play in 2013, as she teamed with fellow All-American Patricia Veresova to advance to the final eight in the doubles competition. Off the court, Weatherholt claimed one of the NCAA’s top overall honors as a winner of an NCAA Top Ten Award in 2014. She was the Big Ten Women’s Tennis Athlete of the Year in both 2012 and 2013, and she was Nebraska’s Female Student-Athlete of the Year in 2012-13. Weatherholt added a Big Ten Sportsmanship Award, while claiming the ITA Cissie Leary Sportsmanship Award, which is presented to the nation’s top women’s tennis student-athlete. Jacobson guided Weatherholt to 208 career combined wins, the program’s first player to reach 200 victories. In addition to their first-team AllAmerica honors, Weatherholt and Veresova both earned first-team All-Big Ten accolades, while fellow senior Stefanie Weinstein claimed second-team honors. The Huskers’ record-breaking 2013 season followed on the heels of a 2012 campaign that featured a 24-5 overall record and a 9-2 Big Ten mark in Nebraska’s first year in the conference. Weatherholt, who returned to the court after suffering a knee injury as a sophomore in 2011, again led the Huskers along with Veresova, Weinstein, Janine Weinreich and senior Madeleine Geibert. A three-time all-conference pick both athletically and academically, Geibert established the NU record with 181 combined wins before Weatherholt broke the record the following season. Jacobson earned 2012 Big Ten Co-Coach-of-the-Year honors after leading the Big Red to the second round of the NCAA Tournament. In Nebraska’s final season in the Big 12 Conference in 2011, Jacobson led the Huskers to a 20-win campaign despite dealing with the loss of Weatherholt to a knee injury early in the fall. NU finished fourth in a loaded Big 12, producing a 7-4 conference mark while qualifying for their third straight NCAA Tournament. Geibert and Veresova both earned All-Big 12 honors. Jacobson capped his association with the Big 12 Conference by leading seven Huskers to Big 12 individual titles and 26 firstteam All-Big 12 awards. In 2010, Nebraska posted the first 20-win campaign in school history, finishing with a 22-6 overall record that included a 9-2 Big 12 mark and a third-place conference finish. Jacobson was

named Big 12 Coach of the Year for the second time, while leading the Huskers to their first-ever NCAA Tournament victory with a first-round win over Illinois. Jacobson, who led Nebraska to its first NCAA Tournament with an 18-4 record and a 9-2 Big 12 mark in 2005, was also the 2005 Big 12 Coach of the Year. The 2006 team added a 17-10 overall record while featuring Big 12 Freshman-of-the-Year Kim Hartmann on its way to a second straight NCAA Tournament bid. While Nebraska has seen its most success on the court under Jacobson, the veteran head coach also emphasizes excellence in the classroom and in the community. During his career, Jacobson’s Huskers have earned numerous academic all-conference accolades. Jacobson also guided the athletic career of two-time CoSIDA Academic All-American Imke Reimers. The women’s tennis team also earned the Herman Award four straight years from 2011 to 2014. The award is presented to the NU team with the top overall grade-point average. Before becoming head coach in 1991, Jacobson helped the Nebraska men’s team to an 84-86 record as an assistant from 1979 to 1989. He also spent 11 years as the assistant director of the Tennis and Life Camp in St. Peter, Minn. He has been an employee of the camp for 23 years. In 1995, Jacobson was awarded the David Aasen Award by the staff of the Tennis and Life Camp. The award honors enthusiasm, energy, sense of humor, high standards of sportsmanship, a love of teaching and a genuine concern for others. Originally from Blue Earth, Minn., Jacobson has been involved in many activities in Nebraska. BILL MOOS

Director of Athletics First Season Washington State (1973)

Honor the past. Live the present. Create the future. Nine simple words that carry impressive significance and undeniable responsibility. Words that Nebraska’s new athletic director uses to lead his programs and set the tone for building champions in competition and in life. William H. (Bill) Moos was named Nebraska’s Athletic Director on Oct. 15, 2017, and fully assumed those responsibilities on Oct. 23. Moos, who became the 15th athletic director in the history of the storied Cornhusker program, brings nearly 25 years of experience as an athletic director at three Division I schools (Washington State, Oregon, Montana) with him to Nebraska. More importantly, he brings an impressive track record of success in building outstanding programs, developing long-term relationships, and for doing what is best for his schools, its fans and most importantly, its student-athletes. “When you name the top three, four, five athletic programs in the great positions as an athletic director, Nebraska is in that same breath,” Moos said at his introductory press conference at Memorial Stadium. “I want you to know that my motto has always been, in the 25 years I have been a Division I athletic director and it will be here too is very simple - honor the past, live the present, create the future.” Moos came to Lincoln after spending seven-plus years at Washington State (2010-17). He previously served 12 highly successful seasons as the athletic director at Oregon (1995-2007).

During his time at his alma mater, Moos wasted little time in making his impact felt in Cougar Athletics, spearheading a department-wide rebranding effort with Nike while securing a 10year, $35 million marketing rights agreement with IMG College. In addition, the 2004 WSU Alumni Achievement Award winner gained Regents approval for a $130 million addition and remodel of Martin Stadium, featuring a remodeled press box with luxury seating, including suites, loge boxes and club room. Also included in the project was a state-of-the-art video board and an 80,000-square-foot football operations building that served as the stadium’s showpiece and opened in May 2014. As the dean of Pac-12 athletic directors, Moos was at the forefront of the conference’s procurement of a 12-year, $3 billion television contract with FOX and ESPN, a landmark agreement in college athletics. Under Moos’ direction, the Cougar Athletic Fund’s Annual Giving program saw an 81 percent increase in gifts while CAF donor members rose from nearly 4,000 to more than 7,500. Additional facility enhancements under Moos included a center-hung video board in Beasley Coliseum that was installed prior to the 2011-12 season, giving Cougar basketball one of the premier fan experiences in the conference. An indoor golf hitting facility was also completed in early 2013, and Lower Soccer Field underwent a major renovation making the venue TV-ready while also providing one of the best playing surfaces on the West Coast, along with the addition of lights and a new scoreboard. Other enhancements were made to the Moobery track facility, Bailey-Brayton Field, the basketball practice gym, Gibb Pool and the Simmelink Indoor tennis courts. In Moos’ seven years at WSU, Cougar student-athletes and coaches accounted for 805 academic all-conference selections, 130 all-conference accolades, 45 All-America honors and three Pac-12 Coach-of-the-Year honors. Moos served as Oregon’s director of athletics from July of 1995 to 2007. While at Oregon he oversaw a 17-sport athletic department that grew to national prominence during his tenure. Oregon’s annual athletic department budget grew from $18.5 million in his first year to more than $40 million by 2007, becoming 100 percent self-sufficient during that time. Under his direction the Duck Athletic Fund donor base increased from 4,930 to 12,290, resulting in an annual gifts increase from $4.1 million to $15.3 million. Moos initiated more than $160 million in facility improvements

while at Oregon. Included in that was the $90 million Autzen Stadium renovation in 2002, which added 12,000 new seats, 32 new suites, a new Club at Autzen and a new press box to the stadium. In his 12 years, the Ducks ranked first in Pac-10 football attendance 11 times, reaching 100 percent capacity in each of those seasons. During Moos’ tenure, Oregon athletics captured 13 Pac10 championships across six different sports. He increased opportunities for women by adding two intercollegiate programs, soccer and lacrosse, and negotiated an all-inclusive shoe and apparel contract with Nike, one of only 14 in the country at the time. From an academic standpoint during Moos’ tenure, Oregon student-athletes collected 722 academic all-conference selections, 34 Academic All-America selections, nine NCAA Postgraduate Scholarship recipients and one NCAA Top Ten Award. During his first stint as a collegiate athletic director at Montana (1990-95), Moos created an academic support program and hired its first athletic academic coordinator, developed a facility enhancement plan that created more than $4 million in improvements, and lifted the school’s fund-raising efforts to show a 300 percent increase in private and corporate gifts. Academically, Montana student-athletes were equally successful as the athletic department achieved a graduation rate 20 percent higher than the general university enrollment. Under Moos’ watch Montana garnered 269 academic allconference selections, five Academic All-Americans and two NCAA Postgraduate Scholarship recipients. Moos began his athletic career as an athletic administrator in 1982 as assistant athletic director at Washington State. He also served as the school’s associate athletic director (1988-90). At Washington State, he was director of development for more than five years and associate director for nearly two years, supervising all external operations. Prior to that, he managed and owned private businesses in Washington and Oregon for eight years. He was a student assistant football coach at Washington State for the 1973 season, then spent part of 1974 in Washington, D.C., serving as a government intern. Raised on a wheat and cattle ranch in eastern Washington, Moos attended high school in Olympia when his father served in the governor’s cabinet. Moos earned his bachelor’s degree in history from WSU and was a three-year letterman in football before concluding his collegiate career by representing Washington State in the 1972 East-West Shrine All-Star Game in San Francisco. He served as co-captain on the Cougars’ 1972 squad and garnered first-team All-Pac-8 Conference honors. Moos and his wife Kendra have three daughters: Christa, Brittany and Kaiti; and two sons, Bo and Benjamin.

Mary Hanna, a force in Nebraska’s singles and doubles lineups, produced a solid career with 126 combined victories. As a senior in 2016-17, Hanna went 21-3 in singles competition. She also posted an impressive 11-3 mark at No. 1 double, partnering with Lisa Andersson, Vasanti Shinde and Paula Del Cueto Castillo.

The Nebraska women’s tennis team continued to climb the ladder in the Big Ten standings with a successful 2016-17 season. The Huskers finished with a 19-8 overall record in 2016-17, the most wins for Nebraska since its Big Ten Tournament championship in 2013. Nebraska also earned a trip to the 2017 Big Ten Tournament, where the Huskers advanced to the second round after a thrilling 4-3 victory over Minnesota. The win at the conference tournament avenged a regular-season setback to the Gophers. The 2016-17 Huskers continued to thrive in their second season at the Sid and Hazel Dillon Tennis Center. The Nebraska tennis program’s spectacular on-campus facility helped the Huskers to an outstanding 16-2 record on its home courts. A truly world-class competitive and training facility, the Dillon Tennis Center includes six indoor and 12 outdoor courts with championship lighting conditions and Olympic-caliber surfaces. The courts also provide premier seating for 1,400 spectators and outstanding views for many more to roam and take in all the action across the courts. Nebraska appeared to be on the verge of a breakthrough season, racing to a 15-0 record to start the season, including a perfect 14-0 mark at the Dillon Tennis Center. The Big Red was nothing short of dominant in its first 15 matches, outscoring the opposition by a combined 88-8.

Three of those lost points came at the hands of No. 35 Wichita State, but the Huskers knocked off the nationally ranked Shockers, 4-3 on Feb. 26, and days later the Huskers were in the heart of the national rankings themselves. The Big Red’s outstanding start to the season catapulted Nebraska to the No. 39 spot in the ITA team rankings to open the month of March. At 12-0, NU swept Houston and Illinois State at the Dillon Center March 4-5 to improve to 14-0. The following weekend, the Huskers welcomed Purdue to the Dillon Tennis Center for their second Big Ten match and improved to 2-0 in conference play with a 5-2 victory over the Boilermakers. Although the Huskers appeared poised for a run in the Big Ten, unexpected adversity hit the Nebraska lineup on a Spring Break trip to California. One of Nebraska’s top players, Katerina Matysova, was knocked out of the lineup with a non-tennis health condition before NU’s match at Cal State Fullerton. Entering the trip, Matysova was truly dominant in the heart of the Husker lineup, posting a perfect 12-0 singles record while dropping just one set all season. She was also 5-0 in spring doubles play. Without Matysova, the Huskers dropped a 4-1 decision to the Titans, before heading to Minneapolis to face the Golden Gophers to start a nine-game stretch against Big Ten foes.

UNDERCLASSMEN ADD ENERGY TO NEBRASKA Nebraska fell 4-3 to the Gophers on March 25, before rebounding with a 5-2 victory at Wisconsin the following day to improve to 16-2 overall and 3-1 in the Big Ten. Without Matysova, the Huskers split home matches with No. 40 Northwestern and Illinois the next weekend. She returned to the lineup against Penn State on April 7, sweeping her singles match to help the Huskers to a 5-2 victory over the Nittany Lions, giving the Huskers a perfect 16-0 record with Matysova in the lineup on the year. However, Matysova’s health did not allow her to return the rest of the season. The Huskers closed the regular season with four consecutive losses, including setbacks to a pair of top-10 teams Ohio State and at Michigan. With Matysova, Nebraska was 16-0. Without her, NU went 3-8 with three losses to top-10 foes. Although Matysova went 26-1 in singles sets during the spring, her absence from the Husker lineup reached further than just her victories. The shuffling in Nebraska’s lineup likely cost the Huskers wins in other spots, especially the 4-3 loss at Minnesota and a 4-3 loss at Iowa in the regularseason finale on April 22. While the loss of Matysova hurt the Huskers in the win column in 2016-17, her absence helped the Big Red grow and become stronger as several young Huskers stepped into the spotlight. Paula Del Cueto Castillo battled back from injury the previous year for a stellar singles season. The sophomore from Sevilla, Spain produced 12 victories out of the top positions on the court. She added a team-best five wins in Big Ten play. She also recorded 12 doubles wins with help from senior teammate Mary Hanna.

Off the court, Del Cueto Castillo was a Big Ten Distinguished Scholar, Academic All-Big Ten and earned Nebraska’s Big Ten Sportsmanship Award. Claire Reifeis produced one of the most impressive first seasons for the Big Red in recent memory. The freshman from Indianapolis paced the Huskers in every level of play. Reifeis posted a team-best 24-8 record in doubles play (7-3 Big Ten), the majority of which came with fellow freshman Hayley Haakenstad. Reifeis added team-high, 20 singles victories, playing out of the No. 1, 2 and 3 positions. Haakenstad added to the success of the Husker freshmen by notching 30 combined victories in singles and doubles. Fellow freshman Jeannie Lozowski contributed 24 combined wins for NU. While the freshmen provided many reasons for optimism in the future, seniors Hanna and Lisa Andersson supplied outstanding leadership throughout the 2016-17 campaign. Hanna compiled 37 combined victories in singles and doubles play as a senior to finish with 126 total career wins. Hanna was also honored with the Nebraska Student-Athlete HERO Leadership Award in 2016. Andersson, a four-year starter in the Husker lineup from Varberg, Sweden, played out of the No. 2, 3, 4, 5 and 6 spots for the Big Red as a senior. The veteran amassed 13 wins as a singles player, two of which came from Big Ten play. She added 17 doubles wins in 2016-17. Andersson finished with 105 combined wins (47 singles, 58 doubles) in her career. She also earned her bachelor’s degree in May of 2017 as a threetime All-Big Ten selection and a six-time member of the Nebraska Scholar-Athlete Honor Roll.

“I’ve had the privilege to tour the new soccer/ tennis complex. I literally was awestruck with everything that I saw. What an incredible facility and what a powerful recruiting tool this will be for future student-athletes. They’ve built such an incredible indoor and outdoor tennis facility. It reminded me of how awestruck I was when I was recruited.” Liz (Mooney) Shaffer 1986 NCAA Women’s Tennis All-American 2015 Nebraska Athletics Hall of Fame Inductee The athletic academic unit, located in the Dick and Peg Herman Family Student Life Complex, provides personal and academic support to ensure that student-athletes will get the most out of their years as Huskers. Featuring one of the most innovative and comprehensive academic support systems in the country, Nebraska is dedicated to helping its student-athletes become outstanding leaders in their chosen fields. The academic support team is composed of 14 full-time staff members and is certified by the National Association of Academic Advisors for Athletics (N4A) as meeting the standards established by the N4A.

ACADEMIC COUNSELING

Seven academic counselors, three learning specialists and two assistant academic counselors are in place to monitor daily academic progress, receive consistent course feedback, assist with the advising/registration process and monitor continuing eligibility and progress toward graduation.

TUTORIAL SUPPORT

A tremendous resource for all academic abilities, unlimited tutorial support from approximately 120 tutors on staff is available from day one up to college graduation in all subject areas. The tutorial program is certified as a model tutoring program by the College Reading and Learning Association.

STUDY HALL

Nebraska’s study hall program is housed in the D.J. Sokol Enrichment Center within the Student Life Complex. Student-athletes attend a supervised, flex-time study hall that features day, evening and weekend hours. Student-athletes are required to complete a specific number of study hours each week as determined by their academic counselor and/ or coach. Additional performance-based or tutor-based study hall also may be determined by the academic counselor.

MENTORING

Academic support staff serve as mentors to all incoming student-athletes and a select group of returning student-athletes. Student-athletes meet with their mentor weekly to develop time management skills, gather and report academic progress information, and discuss academic success strategies.

EDUCATIONAL ASSESSMENTS

Assessments are administered upon the request of the student-athlete, academic counselor, or coach. Learning specialists are available to administer and score informal assessments, which include a reading comprehension and a writing assessment. When more in-depth assessments are necessary, referrals are made to a consulting psychologist who conducts the assessments. If it is determined a student-athlete has a learning disability or another medical condition that impedes the student from reaching their academic potential, appropriate accommodations are implemented by the Office of Services for Students with Disabilities.

STUDENT-ATHLETE ORIENTATION

Each new student-athlete attends an orientation at the beginning of their academic career. Student-athletes are introduced to staff, faculty, administrators, and a variety of resources that help facilitate the transition into college while enhancing awareness of support services in the Athletic Department and across campus.

PERSONAL COUNSELING

Student-athletes will find a supportive and caring environment at Nebraska. Transitional issues, stress management, time management, academic focus and problem resolution are all addressed in a proactive manner throughout the year. If necessary, counseling referrals are also made to designated practitioners.

COMPUTER RESOURCES

The Herman Student Life Complex has two computer labs available for student-athletes. The Scott Technology Center features two tech tables for use on group computer projects and group study sessions. Additionally, each student-athlete is provided a laptop for use throughout their academic career at Nebraska. Renovations to the Nebraska Student Life Complex nearly tripled the size of NU’s previous academic space in 2010. The Dick and Peg Herman Family Student Life Complex also features a new technology center and a dedicated Life Skills area and the Papik Computer lab (left). NEBRASKA LIFE SKILLS Regarded as the premier and most comprehensive Life Skills program in college athletics, the Husker program is committed to providing proactive education, resources and support through college and beyond to promote total person development and preparation for life after sports. Led by Senior Associate Athletic Director Keith Zimmer, five full-time staff members coordinate community involvement, career planning, communication strategies and much more to benefit Husker student-athletes.

In May of 2017, 22 student-athletes traveled to Nicaragua as part of the NoFilter program to serve abroad with Seeds of Learning, a nonprofit organization that helps to create educational opportunities in rural Latin America. Over the course of one week, these Huskers experienced a new culture, created new friendships and relationships, and most importantly, helped build additional classrooms for a school in the town of Villa Japón.

In August of 2014, the NCAA Division I Board of Directors restructured the way member institutions and conferences, including the Big Ten, govern themselves. Nebraska has a great history and tradition of providing unmatched benefits and support to studentathletes. However, this change in governance, and subsequent legislation, paved the way for Nebraska to enhance the benefits and experiences for student-athletes. A few examples of these enhanced benefits are: • All scholarship student-athletes across all sports have their scholarship calculated based on the full cost of attendance. • Each student-athlete is offered an Apple MacBook Air laptop computer to enhance their learning opportunities. • Nebraska has increased resources and support in all academic and performance related areas including but not limited to Academic Services, Life Skills, Athletic Medicine, Athletic Training, Strength and Conditioning, Nebraska Athletic Performance Laboratory, Nutrition and Dining Services (Training Table) and Sports Analytics. • Nebraska created the first-known Post-Eligibility Opportunity (PEO) program, where every student-athlete graduate who has exhausted their athletic eligibility has the opportunity to pursue (with Nebraska support) an internship, participate in a study abroad program or attend graduate school at UNL or UNMC.

HONORING ACHIEVEMENT

Lisa Andersson (left) and Katerina Matysova were two of the Nebraska women's tennis players honored for their academic and community contributions at the 2017 Night at the Lied awards ceremony in April. Andersson and Matysova were both academic All-Big Ten selections and members of the Tom Osborne Citizenship Team.

LIFE SKILLS AWARDS

Mary Hanna captured a prestigious Nebraska StudentAthlete HERO Leadership Award in 2016. The award is presented to NU’s most committed student-athletes to community service across all sports. A three-time member of the Tom Osborne Citizenship Team, Hanna was also a three-time academic All-Big Ten selection.

EXPERIENCE THE WORLD SERVICE TO A MUCH LARGER COMMUNITY

The Nebraska Life Skills program offered its third service trip abroad in 2017, taking more than 20 student-athletes and staff members to Nicaragua, including Husker women's tennis assistant coach German Dalmagro (below left). The Huskers also have taken service trips to Guatemala (2015) and the Dominican Republic (2016).

PROACTIVE EDUCATION

The Life Skills team organizes several orientations aimed at acclimating student-athletes to college life. Additionally, all incoming student-athletes attend the fall semester Husker Life Seminar. This interactive class promotes responsible decisionmaking, personal brand, financial literacy, leadership, involvement and service.

INDIVIDUAL MEETINGS

Every Nebraska student-athlete is assigned a Life Skills staff member who will assist with personal and career development. The meetings help each student-athlete identify a career focus and implement a plan to increase career marketability.

CAREER COMMITMENT & NETWORKING

Annually, Nebraska Life Skills organizes a StudentAthlete Career Fair, Networking Night and other career events aimed at connecting Huskers with companies desiring competitive, hard-working, accountable candidates. Athlete Network and Husker Hire Link provide opportunities to explore career options across the country.

COMMUNITY OUTREACH

Nebraska student-athletes readily accept the role-model challenge, collectively giving more than 7,500 hours annually to impact thousands across the state of Nebraska. Outreach events include but are not limited to hospital visits, mentoring, school assemblies, statewide rallies (including the Sportsmanship 4 Life Pep Rally), Make-A-Wish, School is Cool and Husker Heroes.

LEADERSHIP

Nebraska Life Skills provides student-athletes with countless opportunities to enhance leadership skills while distinguishing themselves from the competition. Student-athletes can be members of the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee, Uplifting Athletes Chapter or Inner Circle. UNL offers more than 600 recognized student organizations allowing athletes to collaborate with other campus leaders for common goals. Nebraska Life Skills funds and coordinates an annual one-week service abroad trip that allows 20 student-athletes to work together toward a common goal while enriching cultural competencies.

RECOGNITION

In 2016-17, a record 386 Husker student-athletes were named to the Tom Osborne Citizenship Team for completing a minimum of six service projects in the calendar year. A host of other recognition opportunities at the institutional, Big Ten and NCAA levels that all reflect the high ideals, character and servant leadership nurtured through community involvement also are available.

POST-ELIGIBILITY OPPORTUNITIES

Effective December 2015 and beyond, studentathletes who letter and graduate will have a threeyear window to benefit from one of three posteligibility opportunities each valued at $7,500. Upon completion of required seminars, graduates can either study abroad, complete an internship or begin graduate school at the University of NebraskaLincoln or the University of Nebraska Medical Center.

DIVERSITY AND INCLUSION

N CLUB: HUSKERS FOR LIFE

Each year, Nebraska honors its newest letterwinners as members of the N Club with a ceremony where letterjackets are presented. In the fall of 2016, Nebraska Coach Scott Jacobson (far left), joined former Husker letterwinner Ann (Swanson) Bartek (far right) in presenting letterjackets to (from left): Vasanti Shinde, Sydney Harlow, Elizabeth Gould and Paula Del Cueto Castillo.

The Life Skills program also is responsible for all Diversity and Inclusion initiatives for Husker Athletics. Since 2016, the Diversity and Inclusion Summit has reached all student-athletes and staff members with programming emphasizing respect, acceptance and unity. Numerous other special events are coordinated in collaboration with campus departments highlighting the diversity within Husker Nation.
