2017-18 NEBRASKA MEN'S TENNIS

HUSKERS READY TO CLIMB BIG TEN LADDER The Nebraska men’s tennis team laid the foundation for the future in 2017, after a young Husker roster took the court against some of the nation’s best teams following the departure of five talented seniors from the 2016 squad. A 2017 roster with no juniors or seniors took some lumps during the course of the season, but never stopped battling. With three sophomores and three freshmen from last year’s team returning to the roster after making significant contributions last year, the Huskers have a higher level of experience than a season ago. The Big Red also will be bolstered by the addition of three talented players, including the return of former Husker Linus Erhart to the roster. Erhart, who graduated from FH Vorarlberg University of Applied Science in his home country of Austria in the summer of 2017, was a talented freshman for the Big Red in 2014-15. He spent the past two years in Austria, before returning to Nebraska to pursue a master’s degree in business administration while choosing to return to the courts as well. Nebraska Coach Kerry McDermott said Erhart’s return could have a major impact on the Husker fortunes in 2017-18. “He is a very strong player who has very good fundamentals and will be a big asset to have back on the team this year,” McDermott said. “He is quite the leader who leads by example, and we are very excited to have him back as his experience and level of play have already made our team stronger.” Erhart recorded 19 singles victories playing out of the middle of Nebraska’s lineup in 201415, while adding 14 doubles wins. The Huskers also add a pair of talented freshmen who could make immediate impacts. Isaac Nortey, a newcomer from Lakeland, Fla., earned runner-up honors in the Florida state singles competition in 2016. McDermott said Nortey is a hard-working and determined competitor who is still tapping the potential of his overall ability. “We like the fact that Isaac has not reached his potential with his tennis,” McDermott said. “His best tennis will be in the years ahead of him in college and past college. Isaac is a very gifted athlete and along with that he is a very hard worker, and a very determined young man. He is just great to be around. He has a very infectious attitude about life, and he will make our team better by having him around.” Fellow freshman William Grattan-Smith from Atlanta reached the round of 16 at the USTA Boys 16 and Under Hard Court National Championships in 2015, before leading the Atlanta International School to its first Georgia state semifinal appearance in 2016. Grattan-Smith’s high-level experience could help him make an instant impression on the Nebraska lineup in 2017-18. “William is someone who brings a wealth of experience and good energy to our team,” McDermott said. “He will absolutely make an immediate impact and will this team to great heights in the years that he is here.”

Junior Toby Boyer leads the Huskers into the 2018 spring season capturing a runner-up finish at the ITA Central Regional Singles Championships in the fall of 2017.

While McDermott is planning on the new additions to make immediate contributions, he is also expecting more victories from the talented nucleus of returning Huskers. Junior Toby Boyer, who has been one of Nebraska’s top players the past two seasons, continues to show his potential. Boyer showed his continually improving play by battling his way to a runner-up finish at the ITA Central Regional Singles Championships in the fall of 2017. Boyer was just the second Husker to reach the event finals since Husker Karl Falkland won the tournament in 1993. Boyer’s performance earned him a spot at Oracle ITA National Fall Championships. “We are excited as coaches to see Toby’s hard work paying off,” McDermott said. “He had an outstanding fall and he showed some great mental toughness and fortitude to reach the ITA Central Regional finals by beating some highly ranked opponents. “Toby is focused on continuing to work on his game and keep improving as we get ready for the second semester dual match season.” Boyer led the Huskers with 11 singles victories last season. As a true freshman in 2016, Boyer notched 21 wins playing primarily out of the No. 3 singles spot, while teaming with his older brother, Dusty, for 21 doubles victories. Boyer and Dylan Bednarczyk shared time playing out of the top two spots in the Husker singles lineup last season. Bednarczyk, a

sophomore from Woodbridge, Ontario, Canada, led Nebraska with three Big Ten singles victories among his 10 wins on the season. Third-year sophomore Micah Klousia is also prepared to play a major role for the Huskers in 2018. As a redshirt freshman, the Springfield, Mo., native notched 11 singles victories while playing out of the No. 3, No. 4 and No. 5 spots in the Husker lineup. A hard-working leader, Klousia also earned Nebraska’s Big Ten Sportsmanship Award last season. “Micah is just starting to reach his potential, but he will need to continue to push himself and believe in himself,” McDermott said. “We feel good things will happen for him and the team in the future.” Chris Dean gives Nebraska a third sophomore who could see significant gains on the court in 2018. The second-year Husker from Papillion, Neb., competed in 26 singles matches a year ago. Juniors Rok Krizaj and Jon Meyer round out the Husker roster in 2018. Krizaj, from Idrija, Slovenia, is one of the top student-athletes in the classroom at Nebraska. A 2017 Big Ten Distinguished Scholar, he was also an academic All-Big Ten selection as a sophomore. Meyer, a Lincoln native who spent his first season with the Huskers in 2017 after transferring from Wichita State, joins Krizaj in pursuit of their first singles wins as Huskers in 2018.

BIG RED POISED FOR MAJOR IMPROVEMENT “Jon is a very hard worker who continues to show improvement at practice,” McDermott said. “He just needs more match play to improve.” Traditionally, Nebraska has played a rigorous non-conference schedule to prepare for the highly ranked teams in the Big Ten, and that tradition will continue in the spring of 2018. The Huskers will open the spring campaign with a six-match home stand at the Dillon Tennis Center, beginning with two matches against South Dakota State on Saturday, Jan. 13. The following Saturday, the Huskers will be back in action against Creighton, before taking nearly three weeks off from competition to maximize their training efforts. The Big Red will close the stand by playing three matches in two days at the Dillon Tennis Center, beginning with a dual against North Dakota on Friday, Feb. 9. The following day, the Huskers will battle Omaha and UMKC. The Huskers hit the road for the first time to take on Arizona (Feb. 17) and Northern Arizona (Feb. 18) in Tucson. They continue a threegame road swing by facing Denver in the Mile High City on Sunday, Feb. 25. Nebraska will take on Northern Illinois at the Dillon Tennis Center on Saturday, March 3, before returning to the road to take on Wichita State (March 9) and New Mexico (March 10) in Wichita, Kan. The Huskers open Big Ten Conference play at home by battling Wisconsin on Saturday, March 17 at the Dillon Tennis Center. The following day, Nebraska travels to Iowa to take on the Hawkeyes. The Big Red will have a single Big Ten match the following weekend on Sunday, March 25, at Minnesota, before returning to the Dillon Tennis Center to clash with Northwestern (March 30) and Illinois (April 1). Nebraska returns to Big Ten road play the following weekend by tangling with Penn State (April 7) and Ohio State (April 8), before stepping away from conference action to challenge Dayton on the night of April 8, before returning to Lincoln. The Huskers close home Big Ten play by squaring off with Purdue (April 13) and Indiana (April 15), before wrapping up their home season at the Dillon Tennis Center by dueling with Drake on Wednesday, April 18. Nebraska finishes Big Ten regular-season action at Michigan State (April 21) and Michigan (April 22), before heading back to Iowa City for the Big Ten Tournament (April 26-29). “We are looking forward to a very competitive year because we feel we are much better,” McDermott said. “Our returning players all played extensively in the lineup throughout the year, and they are more experienced and have improved over the summer and throughout the fall season. The team is much stronger, and we feel we can go into every match this year ready to compete.”

KERRY MCDERMOTT Head Coach 37th Season Nebraska (1980)

MILESTONE VICTORIES No. 50 Iowa (6-3) 1984 No. 100 Minnesota (4-3) 1989 No. 150 Oklahoma State (5-0) 1993 No. 200 Colorado (4-3) 1999 No. 250 No. 16 Rice (4-3) 2005 No. 275 No 23 Oklahoma (5-2) 2007 No. 300 No. 75 Southern Miss (6-1) 2009 No. 350 Troy (4-1) 2013 No. 375 Michigan State (4-3) 2015 Coach Kerry McDermott has been at the helm of the Nebraska men’s tennis program for 37 years since since taking the reins at his alma mater in 1982. McDermott owns the second-longest tenure among active Big Ten coaches, while his 394 career victories are the most in the history of Nebraska tennis. In fact, only one other coach, Ed Higginbotham (1951-72), recorded 100 career victories. McDermott owns a 394-433 career record. More impressively, McDermott guided the Huskers to backto-back NCAA Tournament appearances in 2010 and 2011 and has led Nebraska to six final top-75 ITA national rankings since 2009. In fact, the Huskers have finished the season ranked among the ITA top 75 in 10 of the last 13 seasons. Nebraska closed its first season in the new Sid and Hazel Dillon Tennis Center with a 14-13 overall record that included a 4-7 Big Ten mark. The Huskers finished No. 66 in the ITA rankings after splitting a pair of matches at the 2016 Big Ten Tournament. Senior Dusty Boyer led the Huskers by capturing All-Big Ten accolades for the third consecutive season. In addition to their success on the court, the 2016 Huskers captured Nebraska’s Herman Team GPA Award, which is presented annually to the Husker men’s program with the best combined grade-point average. The 2016 Huskers posted a 3.418 GPA to win the award for the seventh time in 20 years. With a record of 11-14 in 2015, McDermot pushed the Huskers to a 3-8 Big Ten mark. In 2014, McDermott led a young Husker team to a 12-15 overall record and a 3-8 Big Ten mark with Boyer leading the way. In 2012, McDermott NU in its first year in the Big Ten Conference. He guided the Huskers to an 11-15 overall record and a 3-8 conference mark, as NU finished No. 73 in the ITA rankings. McDermott had two players earn All-Big Ten honors. Christopher Aumueller captured first-team All-Big Ten honors while Benedikt Lindheim added a second-team All-Big Ten award. Aumueller and Lindheim teamed up on the doubles court to finish the season ranked No. 26 after competing in the 2012 NCAA Men’s Tennis Doubles Championship. The appearance by Aumueller and Lindheim at the 2012 NCAA Championships, followed back-to-back NCAA

Championship bids by the Husker team in 2010 and 2011. Nebraska finished 15-12 and closed the 2011 season at No. 44 in the ITA rankings after a narrow 4-3 loss to Miami in the NCAA first round. Aumueller earned a spot on the All-Big 12 team as a singles competitor, while joining partner Andre Stenger on the All-Big 12 doubles team. McDermott’s 2010 Husker team finished No. 41 in the ITA rankings with a 13-12 record after claiming the school’s first NCAA Tournament bid. NU fell to North Carolina 4-1 in the first round, but helped propel the Huskers to a repeat bid in 2011. NCAA Tournament appearances and national rankings are just a small part of McDermott’s successful career at Nebraska. McDermott’s players regularly refer to his character and commitment to them off the court. McDermott routinely recruits individuals who are focused on team success, and he serves as an invaluable resource to young men in navigating their paths to maturity and graduation. In the classroom, Nebraska annually places student-athletes on academic all-conference teams and contends for the Herman Award, which is presented each year at Nebraska to the men’s and women’s teams with the top GPA. McDermott’s men’s tennis teams have captured the award seven times (1997, 1998, 2000, 2001, 2002, 2008, 2016). In 2012, Aumueller, Lindheim and Sock earned spots on the academic All-Big Ten team. Aumueller added NU’s first-ever Big Ten Sportsmanship award and claimed the Arthur Ashe Leadership and Sportsmanship award for the Central Region. Nebraska’s roster regularly features players from around the country and the world. McDermott is committed to keeping Nebraska’s top players at home, while attracting some of the best competitors from the Midwest and Big Ten region. McDermott also has had great success throughout his career in bringing top talent from overseas. After completing his playing career at Nebraska in 1980, McDermott earned his first career win as the Husker coach in 1982 and quickly started his climb up the NU coaching ledger. That early success was realized behind a solid foundation of players who earned regional and national acclaim. The leader of that group and one of the top players in the nation each of his last two seasons was Steven Jung. After earning a berth in the NCAA Championships for three consecutive seasons, Jung is the most decorated athlete in NU men’s tennis history. Jung is the only player in Nebraska history to earn AllAmerica status, after he finished his career as the runner-up at the 1989 NCAA Tournament. Under McDermott’s guidance, Jung entered the tournament ranked No. 16 in the country, the highest regular-season ranking for a Husker in history. Jung also reached the NCAA Tournament in doubles play that season, teaming with his brother, Stuart, to rank as high as 12th in the nation. Steven Jung finished his career as the Nebraska career wins leader with 114. He was also a first-team CoSIDA Academic All-American, contributing to Nebraska’s all-sport record total of 330 entering 2018. In 1988, McDermott earned Big Eight Coach-of-the-Year honors by guiding the Huskers to a second-place finish in the league standings with a 5-1 record. Nebraska finished the season with a 14-6 dual mark, one of 18 seasons under McDermott that NU has recorded at least 10 dual match victories. McDermott pulled double duty during the 1988 season, as he also crossed over to coach the Husker women’s team for one year. He helped the Huskers to a fifth-place finish in the league standings despite a 5-12 overall record. McDermott’s Huskers came back to post a 17-7 record in 1989, the best winning percentage (.708) during his tenure. The Huskers matched the school-record mark with 17 victories again in 1990. Over the years, McDermott has tutored 11 Huskers through the regular season into the NCAA Championships. Four of the national tournament appearances have been in singles action, with the most recent coming in 2002. Five other appearances have come on the doubles court. McDermott has continually pushed the Huskers to excel

on and off the court. He has helped 12 singles players and five doubles teams earn conference championships, with the most recent coming at the end of the 2000 campaign, as Ryan Haith grabbed the top spot in the Big 12 at No. 6 singles. After struggling in the mid-1990s, the Huskers have recorded at least nine dual victories in 17 of the past 18 seasons. In 2009, McDermott led the Huskers to a 16-10 record and a final ranking of No. 68. It was the second-best win total in school history, trailing only the 1990 squad that captured 17 victories. From 2009 to 2012, the Huskers began each season ranked in the top 50. In 2010 the squad began their campaign ranked 41st, and in 2011 the Huskers started the year ranked 42nd. They began the 2012 season ranked No. 40. McDermott also has helped Nebraska singles and doubles players achieve spots in the national rankings. Aumueller, a four-year standout who completed one of the most successful careers in school history in 2012, finished among the top 100 in the national rankings in each of his four seasons on the court. Aumueller closed his freshman season at No. 97 in 2009, before climbing to a final ranking of No. 85 in 2010. In 2011, he finished further up the ladder at No. 75, before closing his senior season at No. 70. Aumueller, who is in his fourth season assisting the Husker staff in 2014-15, also was a standout on the doubles court. In fact, he and Lindheim entered the 2012 season as the No. 7 doubles team in the nation before eventually earning a trip to the 2012 NCAA Doubles Championships. Aumueller made history for the Huskers as a senior, as Nebraska’s first-ever first-team All-Big Ten selection, while Lindheim added a second-team award. The duo also finished the season at No. 26 in the national rankings. In 2009, Aumueller was the Big 12 Newcomer of the Year. Other Huskers to earn national rankings since 2002 include: Lance Mills (99th, 2002); Florian Preissler (78th, 2003), Adrian Szatmary (78th, 2007; 115th, 2005); Calin Paar (70th, 2009; 128th, 2008); David Bendheim (67th, 2009); Andre Stenger/ Robert Schulze (44th, 2012). Arguably one of the program’s greatest upsets came in the spring of 2005, when McDermott led the Huskers to a win over No. 16 Rice in the first dual match of the season, which also gave McDermott his 250th career win. Initially unranked as a team, the win helped push the Huskers into the national polls where they stayed for 13 weeks, ranking as high as No. 55. In 2003, Nebraska reeled off a seven-match win streak early in the season behind Florian Preissler (13 singles wins) and freshman D.J. Geatz (14 singles wins). The previous season, NU’s Jose Hernan also reached the 14-win total while helping the team finish with a No. 72 ranking. Hernan’s teammate, Lance Mills, became the first Husker to qualify for the NCAA singles tournament in a decade, where he advanced to the second round of the championship. The Omaha native finished the 2002 season ranked No. 99 in singles play after posting a 1-1 record at the national tournament. McDermott began his relationship with the NU men’s tennis program as a player. He competed for the Huskers from 1976 to 1980, and lettered all four years before playing No. 1 singles as a senior. A native of Grand Island, Neb., McDermott is married to the former Terrie Wade, also of Grand Island. In his spare time, McDermott competes in local and state tennis tournaments and is an avid runner who races competitively. In 2003, McDermott won the 1,500- and 3,000-meter runs for his age group at the Cornhusker State Games, and he picked up a bronze medal in the 5-mile road race. For his accomplishments, McDermott was named the Cornhusker State Games Male Athlete of the Year. McDermott also earned the National Congress of State Games Male Athlete of the Year award in 2003, recognizing him for his distance running achievements and participation in various activities over 20 years at the Cornhusker State Games. McDermott also served as the Director of the Cornhusker State Games in 2006.

BILL MOOS

Director Director of of Athletics Athletics First First Season Season Washington Washington State State (1972) (1973)

Honor the past. Live the present. Create the future. Nine simple words that carry impressive significance and undeniable responsibility. Words that Nebraska’s new athletic director uses to lead his programs and set the tone for building champions in competition and in life. William H. (Bill) Moos was named Nebraska’s Athletic Director on Oct. 15, 2017, and fully assumed those responsibilities on Oct. 23. Moos, who became the 15th athletic director in the history of the storied Cornhusker program, brings nearly 25 years of experience as an athletic director at three Division I schools (Washington State, Oregon, Montana) with him to Nebraska. More importantly, he brings an impressive track record of success in building outstanding programs, developing long-term relationships, and for doing what is best for his schools, its fans and most importantly, its student-athletes. “When you name the top three, four, five athletic programs in the great positions as an athletic director, Nebraska is in that same breath,” Moos said at his introductory press conference at Memorial Stadium. “I want you to know that my motto has always been, in the 25 years I have been a Division I athletic director and it will be here too is very simple - honor the past, live the present, create the future.” Moos came to Lincoln after spending seven-plus years at Washington State (2010-17). He previously served 12 highly successful seasons as the athletic director at Oregon (1995-2007).

During his time at his alma mater, Moos wasted little time in making his impact felt in Cougar Athletics, spearheading a department-wide rebranding effort with Nike while securing a 10-year, $35 million marketing rights agreement with IMG College. In addition, the 2004 WSU Alumni Achievement Award winner gained Regents approval for a $130 million addition and remodel of Martin Stadium, featuring a remodeled press box with luxury seating, including suites, loge boxes and club room. Also included in the project was a stateof-the-art video board and an 80,000-square-foot football operations building that served as the stadium’s showpiece and opened in May 2014. As the dean of Pac-12 athletic directors, Moos was at the forefront of the conference’s procurement of a 12-year, $3 billion television contract with FOX and ESPN, a landmark agreement in college athletics. Under Moos’ direction, the Cougar Athletic Fund’s Annual Giving program saw an 81 percent increase in gifts while CAF donor members rose from nearly 4,000 to more than 7,500. Additional facility enhancements under Moos included a center-hung video board in Beasley Coliseum that was installed prior to the 2011-12 season, giving Cougar basketball one of the premier fan experiences in the conference. An indoor golf hitting facility was also completed in early 2013, and Lower Soccer Field underwent a major renovation making the venue TV-ready while also providing one of the best playing surfaces on the West Coast, along with the addition of lights and a new scoreboard. Other enhancements were made to the Moobery track facility, Bailey-Brayton Field, the basketball practice gym, Gibb Pool and the Simmelink Indoor tennis courts. In Moos’ seven years at WSU, Cougar student-athletes and coaches accounted for 805 academic all-conference selections, 130 all-conference accolades, 45 All-America honors and three Pac-12 Coach-of-the-Year honors. Moos served as Oregon’s director of athletics from July of 1995 to 2007. While at Oregon he oversaw a 17-sport athletic department that grew to national prominence during his tenure. Oregon’s annual athletic department budget grew from $18.5 million in his first year to more than $40 million by 2007, becoming 100 percent self-sufficient during that time. Under his direction the Duck Athletic Fund donor base increased from 4,930 to 12,290, resulting in an annual gifts increase from $4.1 million to $15.3 million. Moos initiated more than $160 million in facility

improvements while at Oregon. Included in that was the $90 million Autzen Stadium renovation in 2002, which added 12,000 new seats, 32 new suites, a new Club at Autzen and a new press box to the stadium. In his 12 years, the Ducks ranked first in Pac-10 football attendance 11 times, reaching 100 percent capacity in each of those seasons. During Moos’ tenure, Oregon athletics captured 13 Pac10 championships across six different sports. He increased opportunities for women by adding two intercollegiate programs, soccer and lacrosse, and negotiated an allinclusive shoe and apparel contract with Nike, one of only 14 in the country at the time. From an academic standpoint during Moos’ tenure, Oregon student-athletes collected 722 academic allconference selections, 34 Academic All-America selections, nine NCAA Postgraduate Scholarship recipients and one NCAA Top Ten Award. During his first stint as a collegiate athletic director at Montana (1990-95), Moos created an academic support program and hired its first athletic academic coordinator, developed a facility enhancement plan that created more than $4 million in improvements, and lifted the school’s fund-raising efforts to show a 300 percent increase in private and corporate gifts. Academically, Montana student-athletes were equally successful as the athletic department achieved a graduation rate 20 percent higher than the general university enrollment. Under Moos’ watch Montana garnered 269 academic all-conference selections, five Academic All-Americans and two NCAA Postgraduate Scholarship recipients. Moos began his athletic career as an athletic administrator in 1982 as assistant athletic director at Washington State. He also served as the school’s associate athletic director (1988-90). At Washington State, he was director of development for more than five years and associate director for nearly two years, supervising all external operations. Prior to that, he managed and owned private businesses in Washington and Oregon for eight years. He was a student assistant football coach at Washington State for the 1973 season, then spent part of 1974 in Washington, D.C., serving as a government intern. Raised on a wheat and cattle ranch in eastern Washington, Moos attended high school in Olympia when his father served in the governor’s cabinet. Moos earned his bachelor’s degree in history from WSU and was a three-year letterman in football before concluding his collegiate career by representing Washington State in the 1972 East-West Shrine All-Star Game in San Francisco. He served as co-captain on the Cougars’ 1972 squad and garnered first-team All-Pac-8 Conference honors. Moos and his wife Kendra have three daughters: Christa, Brittany and Kaiti; and two sons, Bo and Benjamin.

YOUNG HUSKERS LAY FOUNDATION FOR GROWTH

Dylan Bednarczyk was one of Nebraska’s top players as a true freshman in 2016-17. The Canadian recorded 10 singles wins, including three in Big Ten play.

The Nebraska men’s tennis team struggled to find its footing against a loaded schedule in 2016-17. A Husker roster that was without any juniors or seniors, faced nine opponents that finished the 2016 campaign in the final rankings, and went toe-to-toe with some of the nation’s top teams in the Big Ten. Although Nebraska settled for a 5-19 overall record that included a 1-10 Big Ten mark, the Huskers laid the foundation for future growth. Toby Boyer provided several highlights throughout the year, moving into the top two spots in the Husker lineup throughout the season. The sophomore from Ham Lake, Minn., finished with an 11-16 singles mark, including a pair of Big Ten Conference wins. Boyer was one of three young Huskers who reached double-digit win totals in 2016-17. Dylan Bednarczyk joined Boyer as a regular playing in of the top two spots in the NU lineup. Bednarczyk, a true freshman out of Woodbridge, Ontario, Canada, managed 10 victories during the season, including three wins in the No. 1 position. He also led the Huskers with three Big Ten singles victories. Bednarczyk added a pair of Big Ten doubles wins as well, including one with Boyer at No. 1 doubles and one with fellow freshman Chris Dean. Dean, a true freshman out of Papillion, Neb., teamed with Bednarczyk with three doubles wins on the year. Dean was also a regular in the Husker singles lineup, competing in 19 spring

matches out of the No. 3, No. 4 and No. 5 spots. Redshirt freshman Micah Klousia was also a regular in the Nebraska singles and doubles lineups throughout the season. The native of Springfield, Mo., matched Boyer for the team lead with 11 singles victories on the year, including a 4-3 mark in the No. 5 spot. He went 6-14 during the spring, including one Big Ten victory. Klousia was also part of Nebraska’s most consistent doubles tandem, teaming with David Samardzija to win five matches in the No. 2 doubles position during the season. The young Huskers, who tried to overcome the graduation of five successful seniors from the 2015-16 campaign, stumbled out of the gate early in 2017, losing seven consecutive matches to start the year. Nebraska regrouped with a pair of home wins at the Dillon Tennis Center, starting with a 4-3 victory over UMKC (Feb. 25) and a 5-2 win over Creighton (March 2). After a 5-2 setback in the Big Ten Conference opener with Iowa (March 10), the Huskers completed a successful five-match home stand at the Dillon Tennis Center with a 4-3 win over Toledo (March 17) and a 5-2 pounding of Wichita State (March 18). The Huskers wrapped up non-conference play with a loss at Drake (March 22), before taking eight consecutive Big Ten losses. But the Big Red snapped the streak with an

exciting 4-3 victory over Michigan State at the Dillon Tennis Center on April 21. Bednarczyk provided a thrilling 6-7, 6-4, 6-2 comeback win over MSU’s Brett Forman at No. 1 singles to secure the win over the Spartans. Boyer added a hard-fought 6-3, 4-6, 6-4 victory over Jasper Koenen at the No. 2 position, while Klousia added a 6-1, 6-4 straight-set win over MSU’s Ivan Rakic at No. 4 singles. Bednarczyk and Boyer teamed for a 6-0 win over MSU’s Colin Harvey and Michael Dube at No. 1 doubles, while Klousia and Samardzija notched a 6-3 win over Forman and Billy Shisler at the No. 2 position to earn the Huskers the decisive doubles point in the match. Nebraska concluded 2017 with a loss to No. 16 Michigan before falling to No. 35 Purdue in the Big Ten Tournament in West Lafayette, Ind. The Huskers, who faced Purdue twice in the final two weeks of the season, played six of their final eight matches against top-35 foes. The late-season win over the Spartans demonstrated the commitment to competition and improvement the Huskers showed throughout the season, despite not always being rewarded with wins. As the Huskers continued to compete against much more experienced Big Ten competition, they continued to narrow the gap on the court. That commitment should benefit the Huskers, as the young nucleus of talented players grows together in the future.

“When I tell my friends and family in California about the University of Nebraska and how great the people and sports programs are, it’s never fully appreciated until you step off the plane and onto the campus. The entire city and really the whole state supports the University of Nebraska. I really enjoyed the sense of community where everyone was very helpful and very friendly every day we were there.” Steven Jung 1989 NCAA Men’s Tennis Singles Runner-Up 2015 Nebraska Athletics Hall of Fame Inductee The athletic academic unit, located in the Dick and Peg Herman Family Student Life Complex, provides personal and academic support to ensure that student-athletes will get the most out of their years as Huskers. Featuring one of the most innovative and comprehensive academic support systems in the country, Nebraska is dedicated to helping its student-athletes become outstanding leaders in their chosen fields. The academic support team is composed of 14 full-time staff members and is certified by the National Association of Academic Advisors for Athletics (N4A) as meeting the standards established by the N4A.

ACADEMIC COUNSELING

Seven academic counselors, three learning specialists and two assistant academic counselors are in place to monitor daily academic progress, receive consistent course feedback, assist with the advising/registration process and monitor continuing eligibility and progress toward graduation.

TUTORIAL SUPPORT

A tremendous resource for all academic abilities, unlimited tutorial support from approximately 120 tutors on staff is available from day one up to college graduation in all subject areas. The tutorial program is certified as a model tutoring program by the College Reading and Learning Association.

STUDY HALL

Nebraska’s study hall program is housed in the D.J. Sokol Enrichment Center within the Student Life Complex. Student-athletes attend a supervised, flex-time study hall that features day, evening and weekend hours. Student-athletes are required to complete a specific number of study hours each week as determined by their academic counselor and/ or coach. Additional performance-based or tutor-based study hall also may be determined by the academic counselor.

MENTORING

Academic support staff serve as mentors to all incoming student-athletes and a select group of returning student-athletes. Student-athletes meet with their mentor weekly to develop time management skills, gather and report academic progress information, and discuss academic success strategies.

EDUCATIONAL ASSESSMENTS

Assessments are administered upon the request of the student-athlete, academic counselor, or coach. Learning specialists are available to administer and score informal assessments, which include a reading comprehension and a writing assessment. When more in-depth assessments are necessary, referrals are made to a consulting psychologist who conducts the assessments. If it is determined a student-athlete has a learning disability or another medical condition that impedes the student from reaching their academic potential, appropriate accommodations are implemented by the Office of Services for Students with Disabilities.

STUDENT-ATHLETE ORIENTATION

Each new student-athlete attends an orientation at the beginning of their academic career. Student-athletes are introduced to staff, faculty, administrators, and a variety of resources that help facilitate the transition into college while enhancing awareness of support services in the Athletic Department and across campus.

PERSONAL COUNSELING

Student-athletes will find a supportive and caring environment at Nebraska. Transitional issues, stress management, time management, academic focus and problem resolution are all addressed in a proactive manner throughout the year. If necessary, counseling referrals are also made to designated practitioners.

COMPUTER RESOURCES

The Herman Student Life Complex has two computer labs available for student-athletes. The Scott Technology Center features two tech tables for use on group computer projects and group study sessions. Additionally, each student-athlete is provided a laptop for use throughout their academic career at Nebraska. Renovations to the Nebraska Student Life Complex nearly tripled the size of NU’s previous academic space in 2010. The Dick and Peg Herman Family Student Life Complex also features a new technology center and a dedicated Life Skills area and the Papik Computer lab (left). NEBRASKA LIFE SKILLS Regarded as the premier and most comprehensive Life Skills program in college athletics, the Husker program is committed to providing proactive education, resources and support through college and beyond to promote total person development and preparation for life after sports. Led by Senior Associate Athletic Director Keith Zimmer, five full-time staff members coordinate community involvement, career planning, communication strategies and much more to benefit Husker student-athletes.

In May of 2017, 22 student-athletes traveled to Nicaragua as part of the NoFilter program to serve abroad with Seeds of Learning, a nonprofit organization that helps to create educational opportunities in rural Latin America. Over the course of one week, these Huskers experienced a new culture, created new friendships and relationships, and most importantly, helped build additional classrooms for a school in the town of Villa Japón.

In August of 2014, the NCAA Division I Board of Directors restructured the way member institutions and conferences, including the Big Ten, govern themselves. Nebraska has a great history and tradition of providing unmatched benefits and support to studentathletes. However, this change in governance, and subsequent legislation, paved the way for Nebraska to enhance the benefits and experiences for student-athletes. A few examples of these enhanced benefits are: • All scholarship student-athletes across all sports have their scholarship calculated based on the full cost of attendance. • Each student-athlete is offered an Apple MacBook Air laptop computer to enhance their learning opportunities. • Nebraska has increased resources and support in all academic and performance related areas including but not limited to Academic Services, Life Skills, Athletic Medicine, Athletic Training, Strength and Conditioning, Nebraska Athletic Performance Laboratory, Nutrition and Dining Services (Training Table) and Sports Analytics. • Nebraska created the first-known Post-Eligibility Opportunity (PEO) program, where every student-athlete graduate who has exhausted their athletic eligibility has the opportunity to pursue (with Nebraska support) an internship, participate in a study abroad program or attend graduate school at UNL or UNMC.

HUSKERS FOR LIFE

Former Nebraska All-American Steven Jung was inducted as a member of the inaugural class of the Nebraska Athletics Hall of Fame in September of 2015. Jung, who was the NCAA Singles runner-up in 1989, was also a firstteam CoSIDA Academic All-American the same season. He and his brother, Stuart, qualified together for the 1989 NCAA Doubles Championship as well.

LIFE SKILLS AWARDS

Ford Zitsch captured a prestigious Nebraska StudentAthlete HERO Leadership Award as a senior in 2016. The award is presented to NU’s most committed student-athletes to community service across all sports. A two-time member of the Tom Osborne Citizenship Team, Zitsch was also a three-time a Big Ten Distinguished Scholar.

Athlete Network and Husker Hire Link provide opportunities to explore career options across the country.

COMMUNITY OUTREACH

Nebraska student-athletes readily accept the role-model challenge, collectively giving more than 7,500 hours annually to impact thousands across the state of Nebraska. Outreach events include but are not limited to hospital visits, mentoring, school assemblies, statewide rallies (including the Sportsmanship 4 Life Pep Rally), Make-A-Wish, School is Cool and Husker Heroes.

LEADERSHIP

Nebraska Life Skills provides student-athletes with countless opportunities to enhance leadership skills while distinguishing themselves from the competition. Student-athletes can be members of the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee, Uplifting Athletes Chapter or Inner Circle. UNL offers more than 600 recognized student organizations allowing athletes to collaborate with other campus leaders for common goals. Nebraska Life Skills funds and coordinates an annual one-week service abroad trip that allows 20 student-athletes to work together toward a common goal while enriching cultural competencies.

RECOGNITION

In 2016-17, a record 386 Husker student-athletes were named to the Tom Osborne Citizenship Team for completing a minimum of six service projects in the calendar year. A host of other recognition opportunities at the institutional, Big Ten and NCAA levels that all reflect the high ideals, character and servant leadership nurtured through community involvement also are available.

POST-ELIGIBILITY OPPORTUNITIES

Effective December 2015 and beyond, studentathletes who letter and graduate will have a threeyear window to benefit from one of three posteligibility opportunities each valued at $7,500. Upon completion of required seminars, graduates can either study abroad, complete an internship or begin graduate school at the University of NebraskaLincoln or the University of Nebraska Medical Center.

DIVERSITY AND INCLUSION

The men’s team under the direction of Coach Kerry McDermott captured back-to-back Herman Team GPA awards for producing the highest cumulative grade-point average among all of Nebraska’s men’s teams in 2015 and 2016. The men have won the award nine times since its inception in 1994.

The Life Skills program also is responsible for all Diversity and Inclusion initiatives for Husker Athletics. Since 2016, the Diversity and Inclusion Summit has reached all student-athletes and staff members with programming emphasizing respect, acceptance and unity. Numerous other special events are coordinated in collaboration with campus departments highlighting the diversity within Husker Nation.
