Two-Time Academic All-Big Ten Three-Time Nebraska Scholar-Athlete Honor Roll Helped Nebraska Women’s Tennis Win Three Straight Herman Awards (Highest Female Team GPA)
A new era in Nebraska women’s tennis is about to begin. With construction nearly complete on the $20.4 million Nebraska Soccer and Tennis Complex, the Huskers are about to reap the benefits of a spectacular new home unlike anything the program has ever known. When the new complex opens this spring, it will feature six indoor courts and 12 lighted outdoor courts. For the first time in program history, Nebraska will have indoor and outdoor courts dedicated solely for its own use. The Huskers will also enjoy an on-campus indoor facility for the first time. Having dedicated indoor and outdoor courts located in the same complex will allow the Huskers to seamlessly transition between indoor and outdoor play, increasing the efficiency and convenience for Nebraska’s student-athletes. The Nebraska Soccer and Tennis Complex, located on Nebraska’s Innovation Campus, is a 28-acre facility that will also feature ample parking for student-athletes, coaches and fans, along with combined seating for more than 1,000 tennis fans. The complex also includes a 2,500-seast soccer stadium.

NEW NEBRASKA TENNIS COMPLEX OPENING 2015 | INTRODUCTION
2 | NEBRASKA WOMEN’S TENNIS | 2014 15
More Experienced Huskers Seek More Success in 2015 A er losing four seniors, including two firstteam All-Americans from the most successful Nebraska women’s tennis team in history in 2012-13, a young 2013-14 Husker squad that included six freshmen struggled to find wins in a loaded Big Ten Conference. The young group ba led through the season, finishing with an 8-17 overall record while discovering the challenges of NCAA Division I tennis. Now a more experienced and healthier group of Huskers looks for greater success in the spring of 2015. Although the 2015 Huskers will be more experienced than a year ago, Nebraska will s ll feature just one senior, Izabella Zgierska. The na ve of Miesbach, Germany will provide leadership on and off the court for the Huskers in 2015. Zgierska enters her senior year with a 66-68 combined career record for Nebraska. She boasts an impressive off-court resume, including Academic All-Big Ten honors in 2013 and 2014, as well as earning a spot on the Nebraska Scholar-Athlete Honor Roll. With the help of Zgierska, the Nebraska women’s tennis team earned its fourth straight Herman Award in 2014 for the highest team grade-point average across all Nebraska women’s sports. “Izabella made a big jump last year,” Nebraska Coach Sco Jacobson said. “We asked a lot more of her. She went from playing the No. 6 spot for our program to No. 2. Her game elevated, and she embraced the challenge. She really played the best tennis of her college career last year. Her work ethic is exemplary. When you have a young team with a bunch of freshmen and sophomores, with the excep on of Maggy (Lehmicke) and Lauren (Wagner), to have that kind of leadership from your senior makes a big difference, with respect to work ethic.” Nebraska also will look to juniors Maggy Lehmicke and Lauren Wagner for leadership. As two of the three upperclassmen, Lehmicke and Wagner will add valuable experience to the young Husker crew. Lehmicke earned the posi on of team captain as she con nues her successes on and off the court. The na ve of Kirkland, Wash., enters her third season as a Husker with an impressive 7151 combined record, playing at the No. 1 singles spot as a sophomore. Lehmicke also serves as a leader in the classroom and community. She was a Big Ten Dis nguished Scholar and earned Academic All-Big Ten honors while claiming the pres gious Nebraska Student-Athlete HERO Leadership Award a year ago. She earned spots on the Nebraska Scholar-Athlete
Honor Roll in both semesters of her freshman and sophomore years and captured a spot on the inaugural Tom Osborne Ci zenship Team in 2014. “Maggy went from a freshman playing the No. 4 and 5 spot to our No. 1 and made a big jump,” Jacobson said. “She is one whose game con nues to grow. The other thing about Maggy that is really important is her leadership with respect to how she engages the team. She is all about others. That’s what you need in a team captain; someone who has a great work ethic but also selfless in nature. She is the real deal.” Wagner saw limited ac on in her first two years with Nebraska but looks to build off a successful fall campaign in 2014. The junior from Roslyn Heights, N.Y., earned Academic All-Big Ten honors in 2014 as well as spots on the Nebraska Scholar-Athlete Honor Roll in the fall of 2012. Wagner helped the team earn its fourth consecu ve Herman Award, as she received a Nebraska Honors Medallion for having a GPA between 3.0-3.49. “Throughout the fall she probably played her highest level doubles she’s ever played in her college career, with Ka Matysova,” Jacobson said. “She made a jump. A er her sophomore year, she went back home and worked on her game all summer. She con nues to improve and get be er.” Nebraska features two sophomores in Lisa Andersson and Mary Hanna. The two will lean on the experience they gained in their inaugural seasons to drive the Huskers to success in 2015. Consistently playing singles in the middle of the lineup for NU, Andersson accumulated a 13-36 combined record, while Hanna rounded out her first season as a Husker with a 24-34 record. “Both of them probably learned that playing college tennis is never easy,” Jacobson said. “Every me you step on the court you are challenged. Those two learned to embrace compe on. That’s the thing they are learning and will con nue to get be er at. You have to love the ba le. I think they are both very gi ed sophomores. The thing they both need to focus on is the mental aspect of the game and get stronger mentally. Approach every point with posi ve energy.” Two Huskers, Spur Shivalingaiah and Katerina Matysova, are coming off redshirt seasons and look to make immediate impacts in both singles and doubles in 2015. Shivalingaiah redshirted her freshman season with an injury a er joining the Huskers prior to the start of the spring semester. The
na ve of Bangalore, India, got off to a strong start in the classroom as a member of the Nebraska Scholar-Athlete Honor Roll in the spring of 2014. “Spur is incredibly gi ed,” Jacobson said. “She was one of the top 250 juniors in the world when she came here. We are glad to have her for another four years. She is probably the cleanest ball striker on our team. She strikes the ball in the center of the racquet every single me. Now it’s just a ma er of ge ng her physical condi on back and then ge ng used to compe ve play.” Matysova, a na ve of Erding, Germany, played some matches in the fall of her freshman season earning a 2-4 singles record and 1-4 doubles mark before having her season end with a knee injury. She earned a spot on the Nebraska Scholar-Athlete Honor Roll in the fall of 2013 and spring of 2014 while her efforts helped the team earn the Herman Award. “Ka is striking the ball as well as she ever has and she has made a big jump mentally,” Jacobson said. “Her mindset is unbelievable. We kid her a li le bit about how this ACL tear was the best thing that ever happened to her because she realized how much she loves the game and maybe before she took it for granted. Her mental approach is tremendous.” Nebraska will add one new face, Mackenna Maddox, to the 2015 team. The McKinney, Texas na ve joins the Huskers a er spending two seasons at Brigham Young University, where she accumulated a 21-20 singles record and a 20-19 doubles mark. Maddox earned a spot on the West Coast Conference Honor Roll both her freshman and sophomore year at BYU and will look to con nue her success as a Husker. “Mackenna has been an incredible addi on to our program,” Jacobson said. “She has a tremendous work ethic and a posi ve a tude. She has very good hands around the net and tremendous doubles ins ncts. In addi on, Mackenna is a great compe tor and always plays with passion. We believe she has the opportunity to help our program in a big way this coming spring.” The Huskers have 24 regular-season matches, with 17 scheduled at home. Five of the 11 conference matches will be at home, while they will travel to Michigan State, Iowa, Wisconsin, Minnesota, Illinois and Northwestern. The Huskers will kick off the 2015 season at home against Air Force on Jan. 24 at 10 a.m.

Sco Jacobson Head Coach|Blue Earth, Minn.|24th Season Honors and Awards Big Ten Regular-Season Title (2013) Big Ten Co-Coach of the Year (2012) Big 12 Coach of the Year (2005, 2010) Six NCAA Tournament Appearances (2005, 2006, 2010, 2011, 2012, 2013) Nebraska Herman Award (2005, 2006, 2011, 2012, 2013, 2014)
EEntering i his hi 24th 24 h season as Nebraska N b women’s tennis head coach, Sco Jacobson has had his Huskers consistently ranked among the top 75 teams na onally for nearly 20 years, while making regular NCAA Tournament appearances the past decade. A three- me conference coach of the year, Jacobson has guided the Husker program to six NCAA Tournament bids in the past 10 seasons. He also led the Big Red to the Big Ten Conference regular-season tle in 2013. From 2010 to 2013, Jacobson’s Huskers produced the most successful stretch in school history, winning 20 or more matches for four straight seasons to advance to four consecu ve NCAA tournaments. The Huskers finished No. 16 in the final ITA rankings in both 2012 and 2013, including the program’s first NCAA Sweet 16 appearance in 2013. While the Huskers produced a golden age in the program from 2010 to 2013, Coach Jacobson’s program has been defined by consistent success. In fact, Nebraska produced 17 consecu ve winning seasons from 1997 through 2013, with the Huskers producing top-75 final na onal rankings 15 mes. Although Nebraska’s string of winning campaigns came to an end with an 8-17 overall record in 2014, Jacobson is confident the founda on for more future success is firmly in place. Jacobson, who owns 341 victories at the helm of the Huskers, has averaged nearly 15 wins per season at NU, while laying the founda on for the Nebraska program brick by brick since his first season in 1991-92. Success at Nebraska goes far beyond winning, Jacobson emphasizes excellence on the court, in the classroom and in the community. A shining example of the total-person concept of Nebraska women’s tennis is Mary Weatherholt. The greatest player in the history of the program, Weatherholt capped her record-se ng career as a first-team AllAmerican in both singles and doubles. She was the NCAA runner-up in singles in 2013, while teaming with fellow first-team All-American Patricia Veresova to advance to the NCAA Elite Eight in doubles ac on in 2013. Off the court, Weatherholt claimed one of the NCAA’s top overall honors as a winner of an NCAA Top Ten Award in 2014. She was the Big Ten Women’s Tennis Athlete of the Year in both 2012 and 2013, and she was Nebraska’s Female Student-Athlete of the Year in 201213. Weatherholt added a Big Ten Sportsmanship Award, while claiming the ITA Cissie Leary Sportsmanship Award, which is presented to the na on’s top women’s tennis student-athlete. During his career at Nebraska, Jacobson’s Huskers have earned numerous academic all-conference accolades. Jacobson also guided the athle c career of two- me CoSIDA Academic All-American Imke Reimers. Shawn Eichorst
Director of Athle cs | Wisconsin-Whitewater (1990) | Third Season
Administra ve Experience Nebraska, Director of Athle cs (2013-present) Miami, Director of Athle cs (2011-12) Wisconsin, Deputy Athle c Director (2009-11) Wisconsin, Execu ve Associate Athle c Director (2007-09) Wisconsin, Senior Associate Athle c Director (2006-07) South Carolina, Interim Athle c Director (2005-06) South Carolina, Senior Associate Athle c Director (2004-05) Wisconsin-Whitewater, Athle c Director (1999-2003) Shawn Eichorst was named the University of Nebraska’s 14th Director of Athletics on Oct. 4, 2012, by Chancellor Harvey Perlman. Eichorst leads a tradition-rich athletic program of 24 varsity intercollegiate teams, 622 studentathletes and more than 300 full-time employees. Nebraska has a reputation as a world-class academic institution and athletics program. Eichorst’s top priority is to provide all Husker student-athletes with world-class educational and athletic experiences and opportunities. On Dec. 4, 2014, Eichorst announced that he had selected Mike Riley to be Nebraska’s head football coach, and Riley was introduced the next day. One of the most respected coaches in the profession, Riley was a highly sought-after coach who had previously turned down interest from several top programs while at Oregon State. The Riley hire was nationally praised by prominent members of the media, the coaching fraternity, Riley’s former players and current and former Nebraska student-athletes. The overwhelmingly positive reaction to the high-profile hiring spoke not only to Riley’s reputation, but also to Eichorst’s ability to look beyond traditional measures by which coaches are judged and find an ideal cultural fit to lead the tradition-rich Nebraska football program. Eichorst secured one of the finest football minds in the world, a teacher of young men and a positive-thinking leader who will represent Nebraska Athletics in a first-class manner while reflecting the department’s core values of Integrity, Trust, Respect, Teamwork and Loyalty. Eichorst has made nearly 300 public appearances describing his primary mission to lead Nebraska Athletics in providing Husker student-athletes with the resources and support they need to be successful in academics, athletics and life. Eichorst’s philosophy is to ensure that the health, safety and welfare of student-athletes is at the heart of every action taken and every decision made. He serves on the Chancellor’s Senior Administrative Team and regularly meets with campus administrators and deans. Eichorst’s monthly radio show and Connecting on Campus column promote the university’s academic and athletic successes, along with the academic and community achievements of Husker student-athletes. Eichorst was the first Director of Athletics to visit the Big Ten-based Committee on Institutional Cooperation (CIC) at its Champaign, Ill., headquarters. The CIC is a highly successful academic-based consortium of 15 schools, including all 14 in the Big Ten Conference. Nebraska is leading the Big Ten and the CIC in several areas, including the Digital Humanities and head injury research. Under Eichorst’s watch, Nebraska extended its nationleading total of CoSIDA Academic All-Americans to 314, including seven in 2013-14. NU also increased its nationleading total to 17 NCAA Top Ten Award winners, as Mary Weatherholt (women’s tennis) earned the honor in 2014. A total of 279 Huskers were honored at the StudentAthlete Recognition Banquet, with 123 earning their undergraduate degrees from August 2013 to May 2014. The Big Ten Conference honored 208 Husker studentathletes with Academic All-Big Ten awards in 2013-14, an increase of 20 from 2012-13. In 2013-14, Nebraska became one of only two NCAA institutions, and the first Big Ten program in history to qualify for a bowl game, or NCAA postseason play in each of the following sports: football, volleyball and women’s soccer in the fall; men’s and women’s basketball in the winter; and baseball and softball in the spring. The Huskers performed well with 15 of Nebraska’s 24 sports qualifying for bowl/NCAA postseason action. In the fall, the football team defeated Georgia in the Jan. 1 Gator Bowl; volleyball advanced to the NCAA Elite Eight; and soccer won the Big Ten regular-season title as well as the postseason tournament and defeated Southeastern
Louisiana in Lincoln in the NCAA first round. The women’s basketball team won the Big Ten Conference Tournament and won an NCAA Tournament game for the secondstraight year. The men’s basketball team made its first appearance in the NCAA Tournament in 16 years, marking the third time that both the men’s and women’s programs qualified for the NCAA Basketball Tournament in the same year and the first since 1997-98. Softball tied for the Big Ten regular-season championship, then went on to win an NCAA Regional and advance to a Super Regional for the second straight year, taking eventual national runner-up Alabama to the wire. The baseball team played for the Big Ten title for the second straight year and defeated Binghamton (New York) in the NCAA Stillwater Regional. Eight other Husker teams competed in NCAA postseason action in 2013-14. The women’s bowling team was the NCAA runner-up; women’s rifle finished fifth in the NCAA; women’s gymnastics advanced to the NCAA Super Six; men’s gymnastics placed eighth at the national meet; wrestling finished 11th nationally; men’s track and field placed 17th indoors and 12th outdoors; and women’s track and field placed 19th at the NCAA Outdoor Championships. NU coaches were honored for their efforts with Tim Miles (men’s basketball) and John Walker (women’s soccer) earning national coach-of-the-year honors. Four Husker coaches earned Big Ten Conference coach-of-the-year honors, including Miles, Walker, Rhonda Revelle (softball) and Connie Yori (women’s basketball). Nebraska’s fan support is unparalleled in college athletics. In fact, in 2013-14 with approximately 19,000 new season ticket holders across three new and expanded facilities, top 15 national rankings for average attendance were reached across six sports, including football, volleyball, men’s and women’s basketball, baseball and softball. Thanks to our loyal fans, three sports have home sellout streaks in place, including football (340 consecutive), volleyball (217 straight) and men’s basketball (16 prior to 2014-15 season). Under Eichorst’s direction, Nebraska continues to focus on improving the game-day atmosphere at every venue, including a $12.3 million upgrade of its wireless networks in and around Memorial Stadium completed in 2014. It is the largest wireless network system installation at a college stadium in history. The upgrade includes a new sound system, IPTV system installation and smartphone applications. In the summer of 2013, Memorial Stadium expansion increased capacity while adding the innovative Nebraska Athletic Performance Laboratory (NAPL) inside East Stadium next to the Center for Brain, Biology and Behavior (CB3). The men’s and women’s basketball teams became the primary tenants at Pinnacle Bank Arena, and the renovated Devaney Center became the home for Husker volleyball, wrestling and the men’s and women’s gymnastics programs. Another major facility project is a world-class, $20.4 million Nebraska Soccer and Tennis Complex, located just north of the Devaney Center and Innovation Campus. When completed in 2015, the facilities will rank among the best in the Big Ten. Eichorst came to Nebraska after serving as Director of Athletics at Miami in 2011 and 2012. During his tenure, he helped grow the academic reputation of an already sterling program with NCAA Top 10 recognition in Academic Progress Rates (APR) for five programs – football, baseball, men’s diving, women’s cross country and women’s golf. Miami’s Hurricane Club grew to more than 5,000 nationwide. A total of $19 million in student-athlete support was generated in 2011-12, and $14.2 million in capital gifts was raised to support the Center for Athletic Excellence. Eichorst hired legendary men’s basketball coach Jim Larrañaga, who led Miami to the NIT second round. The
women’s basketball program posted its highest national ranking in school history (No. 5) and advanced to the NCAA second round. The women’s tennis team advanced to the NCAA Elite Eight for the fourth straight season, and the baseball team made its 40th consecutive NCAA appearance. The women’s soccer team posted the first NCAA Tournament win in history, and the volleyball team made its third straight NCAA Tournament trip. Before heading to Miami, Eichorst was the Deputy Athletics Director at Wisconsin from 2009 to 2011. He was the Chief Operating Officer and oversaw the day-to-day operations (23 intercollegiate programs, 850 studentathletes, 320 full-time employees) under Director of Athletics and former Husker Barry Alvarez. Eichorst was involved in the design and planning of a new ice hockey and swimming facility, and the Student-Athlete Performance Center at Camp Randall Stadium. At South Carolina, Eichorst oversaw daily operations of the athletics department and supervised Lou Holtz’s and Steve Spurrier’s football programs and Ray Tanner’s baseball program. The football team was bowl-eligible each season, and the baseball team competed in the 2004 College World Series. Additionally, he coordinated and supervised multi-million dollar facility projects, including a football training facility. From 1999 to 2003, Eichorst served as the Director of Athletics at Wisconsin-Whitewater, which produced four top 10 percent finishes in the NACDA Directors Cup, one NCAA team title, two NCAA runner-up finishes and five individual national champions. The program also featured 11 CoSIDA Academic All-America selections, seven NCAA Postgraduate Scholarship winners and 74 All-Americans. A native of Lone Rock, Wis., Eichorst was an allconference defensive back, three-time letterwinner and 1990 football team captain for Wisconsin-Whitewater. He graduated magna cum laude in business from UWWhitewater in 1990 and earned a law degree from Marquette in 1995. He practiced law in Milwaukee until 1999. He is a past member of the NCAA Division I StudentAthlete Reinstatement Committee and the State Bar of Wisconsin Board of Governors. He previously served as an assistant adjunct professor of law at Marquette Law School, where he taught classes in sports law. He serves on the Marquette University National Sports Law Institute Board of Advisors. In 2006, Marquette awarded Eichorst the Sports Law Alumnus of the Year award. THIS IS NEBRASKA WOMEN’S TENNIS The Nebraska women’s tennis program has conƟnued to rise in naƟonal prominence over the past decade, and is poised to improve its posiƟon as a naƟonal contender with the addiƟon of the Nebraska Tennis Complex in 2015. The Huskers, who have earned six NCAA Tournament appearances in the past nine seasons under Coach ScoƩ Jacobson, are expected to move into their new home on Nebraska’s InnovaƟon Campus later this spring. The new facility promises to provide the Huskers with some of the top training and compeƟƟve environments in the naƟon. While the Huskers will have a chance to showcase a new home in 2015, Nebraska’s success has always been more about great players and great people. Mary Weatherholt earned All-America honors in both singles and doubles, finishing her career as the NCAA singles runner-up in 2013. She also advanced to the NCAA Elite Eight in doubles with fellow All-American Patricia Veresova. Weatherholt’s success transcended the tennis court. She captured one of the NCAA’s most presƟgious all-around honors by winning an NCAA Top Ten Award. She was also Nebraska’s Female Student-Athlete of the Year in 2013. As a group, the women’s tennis team has posted the best combined gradepoint average of any Husker team each of the last four years.

HUSKERS.COM | 27 Nebraska's top facilities are not limited to the women’s tennis program. Nearly every Husker sport enjoys a venue that ranks among the nation's best. In 2013, approval was given to build a new indoor/ outdoor tennis facility on the University of Nebraska campus to benefit the Husker men’s and women’s tennis programs. The facility, which is being built in conjunction with a new soccer stadium, is expected to open in late-spring of 2015. In 2013-14, the Nebraska men’s and women's basketball team moved into the new Pinnacle Bank Arena in downtown Lincoln. The 15,000-seat arena is the home of both teams while also attracting the nation’s top entertainers to Lincoln throughout the year. The nationally prominent Nebraska volleyball team moved into the Devaney Center in 2013, after the building received a $20 million renovation.

Nebraska’s Dick and Peg Herman Family Student Life Complex opened a er an $8.7 million renova on in 2010. The complex tripled the size of NU’s previous academic support area for student-athletes.
THE NEBRASKA ACADEMIC EXPERIENCE From the day student-athletes decide the University of Nebraska is the right place to be, the athletic academic counseling unit provides personal and academic support to ensure that student-athletes will get the most out of their years as Huskers. Featuring one of the most innovative and comprehensive academic support systems in the country, Nebraska is dedicated to helping its student-athletes become outstanding leaders in their chosen fields. The academic support team is comprised of 13 full-time staff members and a tutorial staff of approximately 75 tutors addressing all subject areas.
Academic Counseling
Eight academic counselors and three assistant academic counselors are in place to monitor daily academic progress, receive consistent course feedback, assist with the advising/registration process and monitor continuing eligibility and progress toward graduation. Essentially, academic counselors assist student-athletes in navigating the University of Nebraska system.
Tutorial Support
A tremendous resource for all academic abilities, unlimited tutorial support is available from day one up to college graduation. Subject and mentor tutors help provide academic support and study strategies to be successful. Supplemental Instruction, a sub-component of the tutorial program, provides targeted group review sessions to help ease the transition to college academics while improving study strategies and building academic self-esteem.
Study Hall
Nebraska’s study hall program is housed in the D.J. Sokol Enrichment Center within the Dick and Peg Herman Family Student Life Complex. Student-athletes attend a supervised, flex-time study hall that features day, evening and weekend hours. Each student-athlete is required to complete a specific number of study hours each week as determined by their academic counselor and/or coach. In addition, weekly study hall reports are provided to the coaching staff. Additional performance-based or tutor-based study hall may also be determined by the academic counselor.
Mentoring
Many student-athletes meet with a mentor on a weekly basis to assist in making a smooth transition from high school to college. Mentors collect syllabi, gather and report academic progress information and teach academic success strategies.
EducaƟonal Assessments
Assessments are administered upon the request of the student-athlete, academic counselor, or coach to determine student strengths and areas for improvement. Results allow academic counselors to develop a personalized academic support program and to determine if more in-depth testing is warranted. When additional assessments are necessary, referrals are made to a consulting psychologist who conducts the assessments. If it is determined that a student-athlete has a learning disability, appropriate accommodations are made through the Office of Services for Students with Disabilities.
Student-Athlete OrientaƟon
The academic staff coordinates New Student-Athlete Orientation to help newcomers adjust to the multiple demands of being a college student-athlete. Presentations are made by academic counselors, compliance officials, NU faculty and administrators, business/community professionals and student-athletes.
Personal Counseling
Student-athletes will find a supportive and caring environment at Nebraska. Transitional issues, stress management, time management, academic focus and problem resolution are all addressed in a proactive manner throughout the year. If necessary, counseling referrals are also made to designated practitioners.
Computer Resources
Student-athletes enjoy a new state-of-the art computer lab and technology center with 58 computers and professional supervision. Laptops are also available during team travel. Student-athletes have the benefit of ongoing education and assistance from a full-time computer technician.
