Introduction

Rifle Glossary Air rifle – A gun that uses a .177 caliber lead pellet propelled by compressed air instead of a gunpowder charge. The rifles can weigh up to 12.12 pounds.

Cleaned – A perfect target, in which the shooter hits a 10 on each of the 10 targets on the sheet for a score of 100. Can also be used to refer to a perfect match.

Front sight – The sight attached to the end of the barrel of the rifle, holding the front aperture.

Electronic targets – A target system that uses microphones and sound waves from the bullet or pellet going through the paper to send to a monitor on each point.

Iron sights – Sights that employ no magnification.

Kneeling – Shooting from a kneeling position with a sling and kneeling roll to support the position.

Off hand – The unsupported standing position.

Perfect match score – In air rifle and smallbore, 600 is perfect.

Plug – A metal device used to score targets.

Variations include the “inward plug” and “outward plug.” With the inward plug, the score is determined by the contact point of the outside edge of the plug with the inside of the next highest scoring ring. With an outward plug, the score is determined by the contact point of the outer edge of the plug with the inside of the next lowest scoring ring.

Prone – Shooting from a lying position.

Record shots – Also known as “shots for record,” those shots that are counted toward the match score, with “sighters” not included.

Relay – One group of shooters firing the match at the same time.

Scoring System

Shooting glove – A padded glove, with or without fingers, used to ensure the comfort of the non-dominant hand (i.e., a right-handed shooter wears a glove on the left hand) as the shooter supports the rifle.

Air Rifle

Shooting jacket – The jacket is made of leather or canvas and provides support and pads the shooter to minimize the effect of pulse and recoil. There are strict guidelines regarding the thickness.

Shooting boots – Boots designed for rifle shooting. They have the toe end of the sole and the heel cut flat for stability.

Rifle – Air rifles can be either air or gas powered and weigh up to 12.12 pounds by NCAA regulations.

Time – Competitors have 75 minutes to fire 60 shots from the standing position.

Perfect Match Score – A perfect match score of 600 is the maximum for air rifle.

Shooting trousers – Snug canvas and/or leather pants usually worn over running tights or sweatpants. They often have padded reinforcements sewn on both knees and the seat to prevent the slipping of elbows and knees when firing from the kneeling position.

Sighting shots – Practice shots taken before going “for record.” Sighting shots are unlimited and may be fired before the beginning of each position. Once a position’s first record shot has been fired, no further sighting shots are permitted.

Sling – Adjustable strap with buckle adjustments and arm cuffs that provide stability. A sling is attached to the rifle and helps to support it in prone and kneeling positions.

Smallbore – A .22 caliber gun with an iron sight used in competition. It can be customized with special accessories and/or alterations (barrel length and style, stock, design, etc.) to fit the shooter’s needs and comforts.

Smallbore

Course of Fire – In smallbore three-position rifle, athletes fire .22 caliber rifles from the kneeling, prone, and standing (also called off hand) positions at targets 50 feet away.

Rifle – Smallbore rifles may not exceed 17.6 pounds

by NCAA regulations.

Time – Competitors have 105 minutes for 20 record shots in the kneeling position, 20 record shots in the prone position and 20 record shots in the standing position.

Perfect Match Score – A perfect match score of 600 is the maximum for smallbore.

Introduction

NU RIFLE RANGE In April 2006, Nebraska became just the second university in the nation to add electronic targets to its rifle facilities. First seen only in international and Olympic competition, the electronic targets were added to the U.S. Air Force Academy’s facilities before the Huskers adopted the new technology.

“This target system benefits our athletes in a number of ways. We are able to get immediate results, which makes our day shorter compared to paper targets. Our athletes are also able to work on different types of mental training that is often hard to do without electronic targets. As a coach it is a great coaching tool - I am able to see tendencies in their shots to coach them on the line.“ ~Coach Rose-MacAllister

instead of 10 different targets. The machine contains a roll of black paper, which refills the open target with a clean piece of paper after every shot.

Four microphones in the electronic targets sense the precision of the shot, transmitting the information to an online computer monitor.

“Electronic targets have allowed our rifle team to reach more viewers.

It has been a great marketing tool

to promote our sport as well as keep everyone across the country informed. With electronic targets you no longer have to be at the range to see what is going on; you are able to pull it up on the internet. With the information so readily available it helps to grow the support base for our team and our university,” Coach Ashley Rose-MacAllister said.

Former Husker All-American Kristina Fehlings demonstrates electronic target technology, which was installed at the NU Rifle Range in 2006.

Outlook

Experienced Huskers Shoot For NCAA Championships First-year head coach Ashley RoseMacAllister inherits an experienced Nebraska rifle team that placed fifth at the 2014 NCAA Championships. The Huskers finished with an overall record of 24-9 that included a regular-season mark of 10-2.

Nebraska returns eight shooters from last season, including senior Kelsey Hansen. She is joined by four juniors and three sophomores this season. All eight shooters bring at least one year of collegiate experience on the range for the Big Red. With such an experienced roster, RoseMacAllister expects the Huskers to be even better than last year as they move through the 2014-15 season.

As the only senior on the team, Hansen will be looked to for leadership both on and off the range.

The shooter from North Dakota has more experience than any other Husker and earned Academic All-Big Ten Honors in 2013 and 2014.

Denise Martin, a returning AllAmerican, is one of four juniors who will help lead this Nebraska team. Martin hopes to contend at the national level again after finishing third at the 2014 NCAA Championships in smallbore.

Magdalena Mical fired a season-high air rifle score of 588 during the first match last season and continued to help the Huskers as the season progressed.

Junior Denise Martin claimed All-America honors in smallbore at the NCAA Championships in 2014.

She hopes for continued improvement in her junior year.

Marissa Major tallied the best smallbore score of her career during the 201314 season and was a standout in the classroom. The junior from Colorado looks for continued success this season both on and off the range.

Alexandrea Lorentz brings a competitive edge to the team, which helped her succeed in the 2013-14 season. The junior from Alaska recorded career-best scores in both smallbore and air rifle last season.

She looks to build upon her achievements from last year.

Nebraska. The sophomore from Seabeck, Wash., captured All-America honors from the NRA and the CRCA. She was also the Great American Rifle Conference champion in smallbore. Phillips hopes to make a run at the 2015 NCAA Championships.

Rachel Martin also made a huge impact as a freshman. The sophomore from Peralta, N.M., placed second in smallbore at the conference championships and qualified for the NCAA Championships.

Martin hopes to return to the nationals again in 2015.

Jaycee Carter fired a career-high 593 in air rifle as a freshman and was named to the Nebraska Scholar-Athlete Honor Roll in both semesters of 2013-14. The Californian plans to build on her strong start to her career at Nebraska as she continues to improve throughout her sophomore season.

This talented Nebraska team will take aim at the top teams in the nation throughout the 2014-15 season.

Rose-MacAllister opens her first season at the helm of the Huskers when the Big Red travels to Colorado to battle Air Force on Oct. 4.

The following weekend Nebraska competes at the NU Rifle Range with a pair of home matches. The Huskers are set to square off with Rose-MacAllister’s alma mater, Murray State, on Oct. 10, before facing Ole Miss on Oct. 12 in Lincoln.

Outlook

The Huskers hit the road the next weekend, traveling to South Carolina to compete against NC State (Oct. 18) and Army (Oct. 19). After a week off, the Big Red will battle Memphis (Nov. 1) and Ohio State (Nov. 2) in Memphis, Tenn., before concluding the fall season in Fairbanks, Alaska, by taking on Kentucky (Nov. 22) and Alaska (Nov. 23).

After the conclusion of the first semester and the holiday break, the Huskers return to action Jan. 17 by traveling to West Virginia to take on the 2014 NCAA champion Mountaineers.

Nebraska continues the weekend road trip by taking on Akron in Ohio on Jan. 18.

The Huskers return to the NU Rifle Range for their final two regular-season matches against TCU (Jan. 31) and Navy (Feb. 1). Postseason action begins on Feb. 22 with the NCAA Qualifiers in Murray, Ky. Senior Kelsey Hansen brings leadership, experience and competitiveness to a talented Nebraska team.

GREAT AMERICA RIFLE CONFERENCE

Great America Rifle Conference Nebraska joined the Great America Rifle Conference in 2004-05 after seven years as an independent program.

The conference, which enters its 17th year of operation, includes Nebraska, Army, Kentucky, Memphis, Mississippi, West Virginia, Navy and North Carolina State.

Before joining the organization, the Huskers faced nearly a month-long break between qualifiers and the NCAA Championships. As a member of the GARC, Nebraska has the opportunity to compete for the conference championship in the interim, allowing it to gauge its performance before heading to nationals. Over the last 10 seasons since joining the GARC, Nebraska has finished as high as a program-best second place at the ensuing NCAA Championships.

Ashley Rose-MacAllister was named the fifth rifle coach in the history of the Nebraska rifle program on Wednesday, July 23, 2014.

Rose-MacAllister came to Nebraska after spending the 2013-14 season as an assistant coach at Kentucky.

She inherited a Nebraska program that finished fifth at the 2014 NCAA Championships and returns AllAmericans Denise Martin, Lauren Phillips and Rachel Martin in 2014-15.

Rose-MacAllister assisted in the dayto-day management of the Wildcat rifle program under Coach Harry Mullins, while coordinating practice plans, matches, team travel, equipment and facility management.

She also assisted in recruiting. Rose helped the Wildcats to a third-place finish at the 2014 NCAA Championships.

Rose-MacAllister was a four-year letterwinner and a team captain at Murray State. Her career for the Racers included a third-place overall finish in air rifle at the 2010 NCAA Championships. She was a member of the Ohio Valley Conference All-Newcomer Team in air rifle in 2009.

She was a two-time second-team All-OVC selection in air rifle. Rose-MacAllister was also a leader on Ohio Valley Conference championship teams in 2010 and 2011.

She helped Murray State to a fifth-place team finish as a junior at the 2011 NCAA Championships and a seventh-place team finish in 2010.

Rose-MacAllister earned her bachelor’s degree in political science from Murray State in May of 2012, before spending the 2012-13 season as a graduate assistant

for the Racers’ rifle team. She assisted in the daily operations of the program, including the coordination of team travel and operation of the target system during team matches. She earned her master’s degree in human development and leadership from Murray State in May of 2013. Rose-MacAllister also spent a year as an intern within the Murray State athletic department, gaining a working knowledge of each area in the department.

In addition to her experience at Murray State and Kentucky, Rose-MacAllister spent five years assisting with the Civilian Marksmanship Program. In the summers of 2012, 2013 and 2014, she served as assistant director, preparing for summer camps by hiring and training camp counselors, coordinating travel and managing the daily operations of the summer camps. She began her association with the Civilian Marksmanship Program in 2009 and 2010, serving as a camp counselor and teaching shooting skills to junior high and high school students.

A native of Eubank, Ky., Rose-MacAllister was heavily involved in campus and community activities at Murray State. She served on the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee’s executive committee and represented Murray State at annual Ohio Valley Conference meetings. She was also the vice-chairman of the Kentucky Federation of College Republicans and the Murray State College Republicans.

She also spent two months in the summer of 2011 working in the office of Kentucky Congressman Hal Rogers at the U.S. House of Representatives.

Getting to Know Coach Ashley Rose-MacAllister What is your coaching philosophy?

“It’s not the will to win that matters everyone has that. It’s the will to prepare to win that matters.“ ~Paul “Bear“ Bryant I believe that in order to be good you have to prepare for every possible outcome. Often times you cannot out work other athletes but you can prepare better.

What are you most looking forward to this season?

I am looking forward to getting to know each one of my athletes. I love to hear and find out what motivates each individual on and off the range.

What are your expectations for this season?

I expect to be as good or better than last year. The structure of the team is in place and it is continuing the progress that has been made by Coach Underwood.

What do you look for when recruiting a shooter?

I look at how the recruit will fit into our team athletically, academically and personality. What their personality is and how it will complement each of the other athletes they will be interacting with. I look for their motivation on and off the range. This motivation can often be contagious to the other team members.

What attracted you to come coach for Nebraska?

The character that each one of the athletes show on and off the range. My athletes want to make a difference in school, in athletics, and in the community.

When you are working with individuals who care about what they are doing it makes each day easy to come to work.

They are as passionate about what they are doing as I am coaching them.

PAT LOGSDON

SENIOR ASSOCIATE A.D./SWA

A member of the Nebraska Athletic Department since 1979, Pat Logsdon serves as Senior Associate Athletic Director for Administration and is a member of NU’s senior management team. She is Nebraska’s Senior Woman Administrator to the NCAA and the Big Ten Conference and serves on the Big Ten Sports Management Council.

Logsdon’s duties include oversight on all administrative issues and operational functions of the Athletic Director’s office. She also oversees the areas of Department Travel, including bowl and postseason travel, the Department’s Gender Equity Plan, equipment and serves as a liaison to adidas.

In addition, Logsdon manages student-athlete end of season evaluations and exit interviews. She also serves as the sport administrator for volleyball, sand volleyball, softball and men’s and women’s gymnastics.

Previously, Logsdon spent 23 seasons in football operations, including six seasons as NU’s director of football operations, the first female in Division I to serve in that capacity. She handled organization of all recruiting functions, supervised compliance activities and coordinated all football administrative operations, including travel and practice operations.

Logsdon earned a bachelor’s degree in education from Nebraska.

KARIN FUSCO RIFLE TEAM SECRETARY

Karin Fusco joined the Nebraska Athletic Department in January of 2009.

She serves as the secretary for the rifle, women’s gymnastics and the men’s and women’s golf programs.

Prior to joining the Husker staff, Fusco owned her own business, K&S Medical Transcription, while serving as the office manager for KRL Psychological Services. She was also the owner of Cleaning by Karin.

A Lincoln native, Fusco graduated from Southeast Community College with an associate’s degree in word processing and secretarial technology with a medical specialization. She has two sons, Gage and Avery.

JOHN JENTZ

SENIORASSOCIATEA.D./CFO,BUSINESSOFFICE

John Jentz joined Nebraska Athletics as Senior Associate Athletic Director/Chief Financial Office in January of 2014. Jentz, who came to Nebraska after spending four years in a similar role at UCLA, directs and oversees all financial and business office operations, including the development and implementation of the annual operating and capital projects budgets as well as all accounting functions.

At Nebraska, Jentz serves as a member of the Senior Management Team and provides administrative and strategic leadership for the athletic department. He directs and monitors the department’s financial master plan and human resources.

He also oversees the gift, gift-in-kind and complimentary ticket accounting policies, procedures, approvals and reconciliations. Jentz oversees the department’s risk management, while also monitoring the management of sport program camp and clinic operations.

Jentz’s primary duties at UCLA included management of the department’s financial master plan and annual budget. He served as the principal advisor to the Director of Athletics with respect to long-term programming and planning, including assessing the resources available for the development of major capital projects. He also directed the human resources unit that included over 200 full-time coaches and staff, supervised the information technology unit, and was the sport administrator for the 2013 College World Series Champion Bruin baseball program.

Prior to UCLA, Jentz spent 10 years at Wisconsin. He started as an Assistant Athletic Director for Sports Administration in 2000, and was named the department’s Assistant Athletic Director for Business Operations in 2003. He was promoted to Associate Athletic Director in 2006. He was in charge of the day-today operations of the business office while also overseeing human resources, technical services, cashier’s office, bowl and postseason travel. He was also the sport administrator for men’s and women’s rowing, and chaired the NCAA Rowing Committee during his tenure.

Jentz was an Assistant Athletic Director at Cal State Fullerton for five years prior to joining the staff at Wisconsin. He supervised eight sports and oversaw the athletic business office and ticket office for the Titans. Before his time at Fullerton, he was an accountant in the business office at UC Riverside, and later managed development funds and assisted with coordinating events for the Highlanders.

A 1992 graduate of Brigham Young University, Jentz began his administrative career at East Stroudsburg University, where he was a graduate assistant to the Athletic Director while earning his master’s degree in sports management in 1993.

John and his wife, Nancy, have five daughters: Kristy, Marin, Emma, Serena and Lindsay.

Erica Nett begins her second year as the media relations contact for the Nebraska rifle team and her second year as a student assistant with Nebraska Media Relations.

Nett handles all media inquiries for the Huskers, including the production of the annual media guide, coordinating interview requests and maintaining rifle information on Huskers.com.

A native of Stoughton, Wis., Nett is a senior at Nebraska double majoring in broadcasting and advertising and public relations and minoring in theater and Spanish.

Tom Dufresne serves at the athletic trainer and physical therapist responsible for rifle, women’s gymnastics, women’s golf and bowling at Nebraska. Dufresne also assists in the coordination of rehabilitation for Nebraska’s Olympic sports, including men’s and women’s tennis, volleyball, men’s and women’s track and field and softball.

A former head student athletic trainer at Nebraska, Dufresne joined the Husker athletic medicine staff as an assistant athletic trainer and physical therapist in 1997. He previously served as an assistant athletic trainer at UCLA for nine years before receiving his master’s degree in physical therapy in 1991 at Samuel Merritt College in Oakland, Calif.

Originally from Ventura, Calif., Dufresne graduated from Nebraska in 1980. His brother, Mark, was a letterman on the NU football team in 1976 and 1977.

Tom and his wife, Iffat, have been married for 28 years.

SHAWN EICHORST DIRECTOR OF ATHLETICS • WISCONSIN-WHITEWATER (1990)

Shawn Eichorst was named the 14th Director of Athletics of the University of Nebraska by Chancellor Harvey Perlman on Oct. 4, 2012. Eichorst leads a tradition-rich athletic program of 24 varsity athletic teams, 600-plus student-athletes and more than 275 full-time employees. Nebraska’s reputation as a worldclass academic institution and its stature as one of the strongest and most balanced athletic departments in collegiate athletics supports Eichorst’s top priority, which is to ensure all Husker student-athletes have the necessary support to succeed in academics, athletics and life.

Since taking over for the legendary Tom Osborne as Director of Athletics on Jan. 3, 2013, Eichorst has immersed himself in Nebraska’s rich traditions. He has made nearly 300 public appearances, including nearly 200 speaking engagements in Nebraska. He serves on the Chancellor’s Senior Administrative Team and regularly meets with campus administrators and deans. Eichorst’s monthly radio show and Connecting on Campus column promote the university’s academic and athletic successes, along with the academic and community achievements of Husker student-athletes.

Eichorst was also the first Director of Athletics to visit the Big Ten-based Committee on Institutional Cooperation (CIC) at its Champaign, Ill., headquarters.

The CIC is a highly successful academic-based consortium of 15 schools, including all 14 in the Big Ten Conference. Nebraska is leading the Big Ten and the CIC in several areas, including the Digital Humanities and head injury research.

Under Eichorst’s watch, Nebraska extended its nation-leading total of CoSIDA Academic AllAmericans to 314, including seven in 2013-14. NU also increased its nation-leading total to 17 NCAA Top Ten Award winners, as Mary Weatherholt (women’s tennis) earned the honor in 2014. A total of 279 Huskers were honored at the Student-Athlete Recognition Banquet, and 208 Husker student-athletes earned Academic All-Big Ten honors in 2013-14, an increase of 20 from 2012-13.

In 2013-14, Nebraska became one of only two NCAA institutions – and the first Big Ten program in history – to qualify for a football bowl game, and advance to NCAA postseason in the major team sports of volleyball, soccer, men’s and women’s basketball, baseball and softball. Nebraska was the only institution to win a postseason game in six of those seven sports.

The Nebraska football team completed its sixth straight nine-win season, while playing in its third consecutive New Year’s Day bowl game, a win over Georgia. The volleyball team advanced to the NCAA Elite Eight in its first season at the Bob Devaney Sports Center. The Husker soccer team qualified for the 10

NCAA Tournament for the first time since 2005, and advanced to the second round after winning Big Ten regular-season and tournament titles.

The women’s basketball team captured Nebraska’s first-ever conference tournament title while earning an NCAA Tournament win for the second straight year. The Huskers also hosted an NCAA Regional at Pinnacle Bank Arena – the first time since 1993 that NCAA Tournament basketball came to Lincoln. The men’s basketball team earned Nebraska’s first trip to the NCAA Tournament since 1998, following a top-four Big Ten finish. The men’s and women’s basketball teams qualified for the NCAA Tournament in the same season for the first time since 1998.

The bowling team earned an NCAA runner-up finish, and the rifle team finished fifth at the NCAA Championships. The women’s gymnastics program made the NCAA Super Six and earned a share of the Big Ten title. The men’s gymnastics team added an eighth-place NCAA finish, while the wrestling team claimed 11th at nationals - its top showing at the NCAA Championships since 2009.

The softball team shared the Big Ten regular-season title and advanced to an NCAA Super Regional for the second straight season. The baseball team earned its first NCAA Tournament bid since 2008. It marked the first time in school history the baseball and men’s basketball teams advanced to the NCAA Tournament in the same season.

The men’s track and field team finished 12th at the NCAA Outdoor Championships, after finishing 17th at the indoor meet. The women added a 19th-place finish at the NCAA Outdoor Championships.

The Huskers produced 42 All-Americans who won 51 awards, including 29 first-team honors - NU’s highest totals in more than a decade.

Nebraska ranked in the top 20 nationally in attendance in football (90,933, 9th), volleyball (8,175, 1st), men’s basketball (15,419, 13th), women’s basketball (6,161, 11th), baseball (3,241, 15th) and softball (963) in 2013-14. NU’s football, men’s basketball and volleyball attendances were all school records, and the Huskers extended NCAA-record home sellout streaks in both football (333) and volleyball (200).

Nebraska is focusing on improving the game-day atmosphere at every venue, including a $12.3 million upgrade of its wireless networks in and around Memorial Stadium in 2014. It is the largest wireless network system installation at a college stadium in history. The upgrade includes a new sound system, IPTV system installation and innovative smartphone applications.

In the summer of 2013, Memorial Stadium expansion increased capacity while adding the innovative Nebraska Athletic Performance Laboratory (NAPL) inside East Stadium next to the Center for Brain, Biology and Behavior (CB3). The men’s and women’s basketball teams became the primary tenants at Pinnacle Bank Arena, and the renovated Devaney Center became the home of the Husker volleyball, wrestling and men’s and women’s gymnastics programs.

The next major facility project is a world-class, $20.4 million Nebraska Soccer and Tennis Complex, located just north of the Devaney Center and Innovation Campus. When completed in 2015, the facilities will rank among the best in the Big Ten.

Eichorst came to Nebraska after serving as Director of Athletics at Miami in 2011 and 2012. During his tenure, Eichorst helped grow the academic reputation of an already sterling program with NCAA Top 10 recognition in Academic Progress Rates (APR) for five programs – football, baseball, men’s diving, women’s cross country and women’s golf. Miami’s Hurricane Club grew to more than 5,000 nationwide. A total of $19 million in student-athlete support was generated in 2011-12, and $14.2 million in capital gifts was raised for the Center for Athletic Excellence.

Eichorst hired legendary men’s basketball coach Jim Larrañaga, and the Hurricanes advanced to the NIT second round. The women’s basketball program posted the highest national ranking in school history (No. 5) and advanced to the NCAA second round. The women’s tennis team advanced to the NCAA Elite Eight for the fourth straight season, and the baseball team made its 40th consecutive NCAA appearance.

The women’s soccer team posted the first NCAA Tournament win in history, and the volleyball team made its third straight NCAA Tournament trip.

Before heading to Miami, Eichorst was the Deputy Athletics Director at Wisconsin from 2009 to 2011.

He was the Chief Operating Officer and oversaw the day-to-day operations (23 intercollegiate programs, 850 student-athletes, 320 full-time employees) under Director of Athletics and former Husker Barry Alvarez.

Eichorst was involved in the design and planning of a new ice hockey and swimming facility, and the Student-Athlete Performance Center at Camp Randall Stadium.

At South Carolina, Eichorst oversaw daily operations of the department and supervised Lou Holtz’s and Steve Spurrier’s football programs and Ray Tanner’s baseball program. The football team was bowl-eligible each season, and the baseball team competed in the 2004 College World Series. Additionally, he coordinated and supervised multi-million dollar facility projects, including a football training facility.

From 1999 to 2003, Eichorst served as the Director of Athletics at Wisconsin-Whitewater, which produced four top 10 percent NACDA Directors Cup finishes, one NCAA team title, two NCAA runner-up finishes and five individual national champions. The program also featured 11 CoSIDA Academic All-America selections, seven NCAA Postgraduate Scholarship winners and 74 All-Americans.

A native of Lone Rock, Wis., Eichorst was an allconference defensive back, three-time letterwinner and 1990 football team captain for WisconsinWhitewater. He graduated magna cum laude in business from UW-Whitewater in 1990 and earned a law degree from Marquette in 1995. He practiced law in Milwaukee until 1999. He is a past member of the NCAA Division I Student-Athlete Reinstatement Committee and the State Bar of Wisconsin Board of Governors. He previously served as an assistant adjunct professor of law at Marquette Law School, where he taught classes in sports law. He serves on the Marquette University National Sports Law Institute Board of Advisors. In 2006, Marquette awarded Eichorst the Sports Law Alumnus of the Year award. He also is a graduate of the Sports Management Institute and serves on its Executive Committee.

Eichorst and his wife Kristin have three sons: Jack, Joseph and Bennett.

HARVEY PERLMAN CHANCELLOR • NEBRASKA (1963)

Harvey Perlman was named the 19th Chancellor of the University of Nebraska-Lincoln on April 1, 2001. He had served as Interim Chancellor of the University of Nebraska-Lincoln since July 16, 2000.

A former dean of the University of Nebraska College of Law (1983-98), Perlman has also served as interim senior vice chancellor for academic

affairs at UNL (1995-96).

A Nebraska native, Perlman was raised in York, and earned a bachelor of arts in history and a juris doctorate from the University of Nebraska. During his law school years, he was editor in chief of the Nebraska Law Review and was elected to the Order of the Coif, a law honors society.

He joined the NU law faculty in 1967 after spending a year as a Bigelow Teaching Fellow at the University of Chicago Law School. He served on the Nebraska law faculty until 1974 when he joined the faculty at the University of Virginia Law School.

He returned to Nebraska in 1983 when he accepted the deanship of the Nebraska Law College, a post he held until 1998 when he returned to the professoriate. He has also served as a visiting professor at Florida State University College of Law, the University of Puget Sound School of Law and the University of Iowa College of Law. In 2011, Perlman was named an Honorary University Professor of Xi’an Jiaotong University, in Xi’an, China. This rare lifetime appointment entitles Perlman to privileges at the university, with which UNL has many institutional ties. Perlman

also will occasionally lecture and teach at Xi’an Jiaotong University. The title is the highest honor the university awards to a foreign scholar, and recognizes Perlman as an accomplished scholar or professional of important international reputation.

The award also recognizes Perlman for his significant efforts in globalizing UNL and Xi’an Jiaotong University through joint research and partnership degree programs.

His area of legal expertise lies in torts and intellectual property. He is a member of the Nebraska State and American Bar Associations and is a Life Fellow of the American Bar Association. Perlman is co-author of “Intellectual Property and Unfair Competition” (5th edition, 1998) and co-reporter for the American Law Institute’s “Restatement of Unfair Competition” (1994). He serves on the Council of the American Law Institute, a leading national law reform organization and as one of Nebraska’s Commissioners of Uniform State Laws. He previously served as a member of the NCAA Board of Directors and is past chair of the Bowl Championship Series Presidential Oversight Committee. He serves on the Board of Directors of the Lincoln Chamber of Commerce and is Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Nebraska Innovation Campus Development Corporation. He received the George Turner Award from the Nebraska State Bar Association for contributions to the legal profession and the Roger T. Larson Community Builder Award from the Lincoln Chamber of Commerce.

Perlman and his wife, Susan, an NU alumna, are the parents of two daughters.

Anne, who earned degrees from UNL and the University of Nebraska Medical Center, practices medicine in Lincoln and is married to UNL alumnus David Spinar; they have three children; Will, Ava, and Marco, Husker fans all. Daughter Amie, who received bachelors and juris doctorate degrees from UNL, is a Nebraska assistant attorney general and is married to UNL alumnus Ron Larson; they are the parents of Caleb and Finn.

JOSEPHINE POTUTO FACULTY ATHLETICS REPRESENTATIVE • RUTGERS’ DOUGLASS (1967)

Josephine (Jo) R. Potuto, the Richard H. Larson Professor of Constitutional Law, has been Nebraska’s faculty representative (FAR) at the NCAA and conference level since May 15, 1997.

In 2002, Potuto was named Outstanding Faculty Athletics Representative by the AllAmerican Football Foundation.

From 2008-09 to 2011-12 she was president of the 1A FAR (FARs from FBS institutions).

Among her NCAA positions, Potuto spent nine years (the maximum) on the NCAA Division I Committee on Infractions (chair her last two years) and currently substitutes when a member cannot serve. She was one of three Big 12 Conference representatives on the NCAA Division I Management Council, served on the NCAA Men’s Gymnastics Championship Committee, and currently serves on an NCAAwide (all divisions) committee to advise NCAA staff on student-athlete issues and educational programming for coaches, staff, and student-athletes.

A sports law expert, Potuto regularly lectures and consults on sports issues in general and NCAA processes in particular. She is an expert witness in litigation involving sports issues. She testified before the House Subcommittee on the Constitution regarding due process in NCAA infractions hearings.

In the past year she has appeared in media reports in the NY Times, LA Times, USA Today, Washington Post, CBSSports.com, and the Chronicle of Higher Education, among others. She has presented to the Knight Commission on Intercollegiate Athletics, the Texas Commission of Higher Education, NCAA regional conferences, law conferences and law firms, NACDA, and to universities and law colleges,

including the Universities of Istanbul, Washington, Maryland, Oklahoma, Santa Clara, Baltimore and Mississippi.

Potuto is a past adviser to the Uniform Law Commissioners Committee to draft a sports agent statute, has drafted rules governing search and seizure and hearings for the Nebraska Racing Commission, and also has written on issues of gender equity in college athletics. She has authored numerous articles on sports law issues. She just completed an article on student-athlete use of their names/likenesses with an econometrician and tax professor.

Potuto delivered the 2012 Chancellor’s Distinguished Lecture. She serves on the senate’s intercollegiate athletics committee. She is a past member of the UNL academic senate and also served on Nebraska’s NCAA site certification steering committee.

Potuto teaches constitutional law, procedure, federal jurisdiction, and sports law. She has been a visiting professor of law at the University of Arizona, Rutgers University, the Cardozo College of Law at New York’s Yeshiva University, the University of Oregon, the University of North Carolina, and Seton Hall University.

She has worked as an assistant prosecutor in both the Essex and Morris County (N.J.) prosecutor’s offices.

Potuto was project director and a drafter of the Uniform Law Commissioners Sentencing and Corrections Act, as well as the drafter for the Nebraska Supreme Court Committee to Draft Criminal Jury Instructions. She is the author of three books. She was elected to membership in the American Law Institute, the Nebraska State Bar Foundation, and the Douglass Society.

Potuto earned her bachelor’s degree in journalism at Rutgers’ Douglass College, and her master’s degree in English literature at Seton Hall. She earned her juris doctorate at the Rutgers Law College.

She is a member of the bars of Nebraska and New Jersey and is admitted to practice before the U.S. Supreme Court, the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Third Circuit, and the U.S. District Courts for Nebraska and New Jersey.

Season Outlook (2014-15) As the only senior on the team, Kelsey Hansen will be looked to for leadership both on and off the range. She helped the team place fifth at the 2014 NCAA Championships and hopes to play a role in the team’s return to the NCAA Championships in her final season at Nebraska.

Junior (2013-14) Hansen was one of three upperclassmen on the roster for the 2013-14 season and was a leader on the range and in the classroom. The native of Minot, N.D., appeared 15 times in both smallbore and air rifle and helped the Huskers qualify for the 2014 NCAA Championships, where the team finished fifth. Hansen fired a career-best air rifle score of 593 against Air Force in late January. She finished with a season-best smallbore score of 580.

Hansen earned academic honors for her success in the classroom. She was also named a member of the Tom Osborne Citizenship Team for her work in the community.

Sophomore (2012-13) Hansen continued as one of the Huskers’ top shooters, qualifying for the NCAA Championships in March. She made 14 appearances in both smallbore and air rifle, averaging a combined score of 1,151.30. In air rifle, Hansen fired a career-high 589 against West Virginia on Jan. 19.

In the classroom, Hansen earned academicAll-Big Ten honors, and she was named to the Nebraska Scholar-Athlete Honor Roll for her academic performance in the fall and spring semesters of 2012-13.

Freshman (2011-12) Hansen made a big impact in her first year with the Husker program, leading the team in combined scoring average at 1,153. She averaged 571.69 in 13 smallbore appearances and 580.85 in 13 air rifle appearances. Hansen took home Nebraska’s only combined title of the season against NC State in November, shooting a season-best smallbore score of 580.

Hansen achieved a season-best score in air rifle of 587 on two occasions. The second time was at the GARC Championships, where she helped the Huskers earn a third-place finish.

In the classroom, Hansen was named to the Nebraska Scholar-Athlete Honor Roll for her work during the fall 2011 semester.

2014-15 Husker Rifle

Before Nebraska Hansen came to Nebraska with a wealth of experience in rifle. The native of Minot, N.D., took silver at the 2010 National Junior Olympic Shooting Championships. She also competed in the J2 division of women’s 10 meter air rifle, where she posted a score of 776. Hansen also attended the prestigious U.S. Army Marksmanship Unit Camp, conducted by the Army’s International Rifle team in Fort Benning, Ga.

In addition to her abilities on the range, Hansen was an accomplished swimmer. A swimming and diving team captain and four-year letterwinner at Minot High School, Hansen helped the team to a fifth-place finish in the state in 2010.

Personal Kelsey is the daughter of Jeff and Kari Hansen and has one sister, Kyley, 18. Kelsey was born Jan. 22, 1993, and is majoring in biology. She earned academic All-Big Ten honors in 2013 and 2014.

She also has been named to the Nebraska ScholarAthlete Honor Roll five times.

Denise Martin junior

Season Outlook (2014-15) Junior Denise Martin looks to build on her success at Nebraska. As an upperclassmen, she will be looked to for leadership both on and off the range. Martin finished third at the NCAA Championships in 2014, and she was a standout in the classroom. She claimed academic All-Big Ten honors while earning spots on the Nebraska Scholar-Athlete Honor Roll in both the fall and spring semester of 2013-14.

Sophomore (2013-14) Martin became one of Nebraska’s top shooters in her second season at Nebraska. She appeared 15 times in both air rifle and smallbore, helping the team reach the NCAA Championships for the second year in a row. The team finished fifth at the NCAA Championships. Martin took third in individual smallbore. She was also named an AllAmerican by the NRA and the CRCA. She fired career-bests in both smallbore and air rifle during her second season, scoring a 591 in air rifle and a 586 in smallbore.

Martin was recognized for her work off the range, claiming a spot on the Tom Osborne Citizenship Team and the Nebraska ScholarAthlete Honor Roll in the fall and spring semesters of 2013-14.

Before Nebraska Martin came to Nebraska after an outstanding high school career in Washington. She was a threetime Washington state champion and finished second overall at the USA Shooting National Championships. Martin was a member of the USA Shooting team at the 2010 International Shooting Sports Federation Junior World Championships in Munich, Germany. She also won the 2009 Junior Olympic Three-Position Air Rifle Precision Class Championship.

Martin shot with the Davenport Gun Club and the Colville Valley Sharp Shooters 4-H Club prior to arriving at Nebraska. She was a member of the championship-winning team at the WSRPA/NRA Championships in 2009 and 2011.

Freshman (2012-13) Martin made a major impact as a true freshman with the Huskers in 2012-13. The native of Chewelah, Wash., finished fifth in smallbore at the NCAA Championships with a then-career-high individual score of 583. She also claimed a pair of individual titles in air rifle against Alaska and NC State. Martin proved herself as one of NU’s top shooters, averaging 574.30 in smallbore and 584.40 in air rifle. Her best score of the season came with her 590 in air rifle against Ohio State, Nevada and UTEP in November.

In the classroom, Martin was named to the Nebraska Scholar-Athlete Honor Roll for her efforts in the fall semester of 2012.

Personal Denise is the daughter of Fred and Grace Martin. Denise is a native of Chewelah, Wash., and was born March 2, 1994. She is majoring in business administration and earned a spot on the Nebraska Scholar-Athlete Honor Roll in the fall of 2012 and 2013 and the spring of 2014. She chose Nebraska over TCU.

Season Outlook (2014-15) Junior Magdalena (Maggie) Mical looks to be a key contributor for the Huskers in 201415 as one of five upperclassmen. The native of Clearwater, Fla., finished with a season-high air rifle score of 588 and was named to the Nebraska Scholar-Athlete Honor Roll in the fall and spring semesters of 2013-14.

Sophomore (2013-14) Mical helped the Huskers throughout the season. She appeared twice in air rifle and fired a season-high air rifle score (588) in the first match of the season against West Virginia.

Mical also had a successful year in the classroom. She was chosen as an academic All-Big Ten honoree and earned a spot on the Nebraska Scholar-Athlete Honor Roll in the fall semester.

Freshman (2012-13) Mical made instant contributions to the Nebraska rifle program in 2012-13. The freshman from Florida captured the first combined title of her career against Air Force in November. She produced her careerbest air rifle score (589) against the Falcons, helping her finish with a 578.50 average on the season. In smallbore, she notched a career-best 579 at the NCAA Qualifiers in February. She finished with a smallbore season average of 570.70.

Mical also got off to a strong start in the classroom, earning spots on the Nebraska Scholar-Athlete Honor Roll in the fall and spring semesters.

Before Nebraska Mical won smallbore at the 2011 Florida Junior Olympic Qualifier and was a 2011 Junior Olympic Nationals qualifier. She also finished fourth at the American Legion ThreePosition Air Rifle Championship in 2010 and was the Florida Metric Prone state champion in 2010.

Mical was a standout in the classroom during her high school career as well. She was a National Honor Society and French Honor Society member and also won the 2012 Outstanding Art Award at her high school.

Personal Magdalena is the daughter of Andrzej and Agnieszka Mical and was born Nov. 13, 1993, in Rzeszof, Poland, before her family moved to Clearwater, Fla. She has four siblings: Maria, 22, Miroslaw, 18, Marge, 17 and Marce, 12. Maggie is majoring in advertising and minoring in French and digital design. She picked NU over TCU and South Florida.

Season Outlook (2014-15) Junior Alexandrea Lorentz will bring a competitive spark and a solid work ethic to the Nebraska rifle team in 2014-15. Originally from Anchorage, Alaska, Lorentz recorded careerbest scores in both smallbore and air rifle as a sophomore.

Sophomore (2013-14) Lorentz finished the season with careerbest scores in both disciplines. In smallbore, she fired a 577 against Navy in the second match of the season. In early November, Lorentz tallied a 583 in air rifle against UTMartin.

Lorentz earned a spot on the Nebraska Scholar-Athlete Honor Roll in the spring of 2014, and she was recognized for her efforts off the range when she was named to the firstever Tom Osborne Citizenship Team for her work in the community.

Freshman (2012-13) In her first season as a Husker, Lorentz competed in 10 events in both smallbore and air rifle. In smallbore, Lorentz fired an average of 565.8, including a top score of 574 against Alaska in October. In air rifle, she averaged 579.4, with her best score (580) coming against Air Force in January.

Before Nebraska Lorentz competed with West Anchorage High School, bringing home MVP honors in 2009, 2010 and 2011 and helping her squad to the 2012 divisional championship. Lorentz was also a member of the Borealis Bullseyes club team. The team finished second at the 2010 Junior Olympics in the Precision Team Championships and took fifth in the same category at the 2012 Junior Olympics.

A standout in the classroom during her high school career, Lorentz graduated magna cum laude in 2012. She was a National Honor Society member and earned four academic letters.

Season Outlook (2014-15) Junior Marissa Major plans to continue her success both on and off the range by making key contributions for the Huskers in 2014-15.

The native of Arvada, Colo., registered her career-best smallbore score last season against Kentucky and earned academic honors as a sophomore.

Sophomore (2013-14) Major fired a career-high smallbore score of 572 as a sophomore in early February against Kentucky. In air rifle, she tallied a season-high score of 577 in smallbore against Air Force.

Major also had success off the range, earning academic All-Big Ten honors while claiming spots on the Nebraska ScholarAthlete Honor Roll in both the fall and spring semesters of 2013-14.

Personal Marissa is a native of Arvada, Colo., and was born on Oct. 2, 1993. She is the daughter of Les and Jody Major and has one sister, Leah, 22.

Marissa’s cousin Max Burkhardt is a member of the Memphis rifle team. She is majoring in English. Marissa chose Nebraska over TCU.

Season Outlook (2014-15) Lauren Phillips will look for continued success after becoming one of Nebraska’s top shooters in her first season. Phillips was named an All-American by both the NRA and the CRCA and was the conference champion in the smallbore individual competition.

Phillips was a star in the classroom as well, earning spots on the Nebraska Scholar-Athlete Honor Roll in the fall and spring semesters of 2013-14.

Freshman (2013-14) Phillips made an immediate impact on the Nebraska team as a freshman, appearing in all but one air rifle match for the Huskers. In her first match as a Husker, Phillips fired personalbest scores and continued to improve as the season went on. She finished the season with a career-high score of 587 in smallbore and a 593 in air rifle.

Phillips had a successful postseason as well.

She captured the GARC title in smallbore and was the only Nebraska shooter to make it to the finals in air rifle. She placed seventh in air rifle and was named to three all-conference teams.

She made the second team in smallbore and was an honorable-mention selection in air rifle and on the combined team. Phillips also qualified for the NCAA Championships where she helped the Huskers to a fifth-place finish.

Phillips claimed All-America honors from the NRA in smallbore and third-team All-America accolades from the CRCA. Off the range, Phillips was named to the Tom Osborne Citizenship Team for her service and leadership efforts in the community. She also earned a spot on the Nebraska ScholarAthlete Honor Roll in the fall and spring semesters.

Before Nebraska Phillips came to Nebraska after a prep career filled with championships. She captured titles at the Washington Junior Precision Air Rifle Championships and the 2013 Open ThreePosition Air Rifle Sectional.

She was also the Washington Girl’s Precision Junior Olympic Air Rifle champion for May 2013. In 2012, she was a member of the West Seattle Totems Thunderbirds NRA national championship team in Indoor Conventional Position Smallbore.

Personal Lauren is the daughter of Jeff and Marsha Phillips and was born April 5, 1995, in Bremerton, Wash. She has one brother, Matt, 17. She is an education and family science major. She chose Nebraska over Ole Miss. huskers.com

Season Outlook (2014-15) Sophomore Rachel Martin returns after a successful first season and looks to become one of Nebraska’s top shooters. Martin placed second in the conference in smallbore and also qualified for the 2014 NCAA Championships.

Freshman (2013-14) Martin had a strong freshman campaign, averaging 586.67 points in air rifle and 579.64 in smallbore. Martin fired a career-high score of 593 in air rifle two times, once against NC State and again at the NCAA Qualifiers. In smallbore, Martin shot a 585 against NC State, beating her previous high smallbore score.

In the postseason, Martin finished second in smallbore at the GARC Championships and

Personal Rachel is the daughter of Joel and Donna Martin and was born April 20, 1995, in Albuquerque, N.M. She has two sisters, Kaitlyn, 22 and Sarah, 20. She is majoring in religious studies and minoring in national security studies. She is a member of the FCA leadership team and chose Nebraska over TCU, Murray State and Ole Miss.

Off the range, Carter earned spots on the Nebraska Scholar-Athlete Honor Roll in the fall and spring semesters of 2013-14, and she was recognized for her efforts in the community when she was named to the Tom Osborne Citizenship Team.

Freshman (2013-14) Carter fired a personal-best score of 593 in air rifle against Army, tying the highest score of the season for Nebraska. In smallbore, she fired a season-high 582 at the NCAA Qualifiers.

Top-Five NCAA Finish Keeps Huskers Climbing

The Nebraska rifle team had another impressive season in 2013-14, continuing its advancements on the national level in head coach Stacy Underwood’s final season. The Huskers set several school records and qualified for the NCAA Championships for a second consecutive year.

Nebraska finished the season with a 24-9 overall record that included a 10-2 regularseason mark, before claiming a fifth-place team finish at the NCAA Championships.

Three Huskers captured All-America honors from the NRA and CRCA, led by NRA first-team All-Americans Denise Martin and Lauren Phillips and second-teamer Rachel Martin. All three awards came in the smallbore for the Big Red. The CRCA honored Phillips and Denise Martin on its third team, while Rachel Martin was an honorable-mention pick. The trio will form the nucleus of a bright future for the Huskers in the years to come, as Phillips and Rachel Martin were true freshmen in 2013-14. Sophomore Denise Martin, who led the Huskers with a third-place individual finish in smallbore at the 2014 NCAA Championships, is expected to lead a young and talented roster next season.

Coach Underwood claimed individual honors of her own for the second straight season at Nebraska, capturing the Collegiate Rifle Coaches Association’s (CRCA) Coachof-the-Year honors. Phillips captured the smallbore title at the GARC Championships, while Rachel Martin added a runner-up finish in the event for the Big Red to help the team to a third-place finish. Rachel Martin also captured first-team All-GARC honors in smallbore, while Phillips brought home a second-team award in smallbore and honorable-mention All-GARC accolades in air rifle. Denise Martin added an All-GARC award of her own, earning honorablemention in the smallbore.

Nebraska opened the season in October at the NU Rifle Range against defending NCAA champion West Virginia, falling to the Mountaineers by just five points. The Huskers received spectacular efforts from Phillips, Rachel Martin, ReAnn Wilson and Maggie Mical.

Wilson and Mical both opened with personalbest scores, as Wilson posted a 574 in smallbore and Mical notched a 588 in air rifle.

The Huskers used the early confidence gained from their narrow loss to the Mountaineers to reel off eight consecutive victories - all against ranked opponents. Nebraska’s run began with Navy on Oct. 26, when Phillips, Denise Martin and Alex Lorentz fired career-best scores.

Phillips produced a 585 in air rifle, while Lorentz (577) and Denise Martin (584) both registered smallbore career highs.

The Big Red hit the road for the first time in November, traveling to Kentucky to face UTMartin. The Huskers cruised to victory by over 200 points, as Denise Martin led NU with a 584 in smallbore and a 587 in air rifle.

Nebraska returned home for two matches against Memphis and Ohio State at the end of November. Denise Martin scored a season-high 591 in air rifle against Memphis, while Sunny Russell finished with a personal-best score of 589 in air rifle against the Buckeyes. The Huskers won both matches to conclude the fall portion of their schedule.

Nebraska opened 2014 on the road, competing against Ole Miss in Oxford. The Huskers captured a narrow six-point win over the Rebels, before returning home to face Air Force twice in the same weekend. NU flew past the Falcons with an impressive 4,685, surpassing the Huskers’ previous season high combined score by more than 20 points. It was the fourth-highest score in program history.

Kelsey Hansen fired a season-high 593 in air rifle to help the team get the victory.

The following day, Hansen and Rachel Martin both fired air rifle scores of 591 to help the Huskers rally for another win after trailing by more than 10 points after the completion of smallbore competition.

In early February, NU traveled to Kentucky, for dual matches against Murray State and Kentucky. The Huskers defeated Murray State, but fell short against the Wildcats, who snapped Nebraska’s eight-match winning streak.

The Huskers bounced back quickly to finish the regular season strong by defeating NC State and the hosts from Army in West Point, N.Y. Against NC State, Nebraska shattered the program’s previous air rifle record and finished with a team score of 4,690, the second-highest team score in program history. Rachel Martin finished with a career-best smallbore score of 585, while Phillips added a career-best 593 in air rifle.

The following day against Army, Phillips raised her career-high smallbore score to 587, while Jaycee Carter (593) and Marissa Major (577) both added career bests in the air rifle to help the Huskers past the Black Knights.

After a two-week break from competition, Nebraska journeyed to Murray, Ky., for the NCAA Qualifiers. The Huskers performed well, taking second out of seven teams to claim a spot in the NCAA Championships field for the second straight season.

In between the NCAA Qualifiers and the NCAA Championships, the Huskers stayed sharp by competing in the GARC Championships in Oxford, Miss. Nebraska finished third at the conference meet behind stellar individual performances from freshmen Phillips (champion) and Rachel Martin (runnerup) in the smallbore. The duo dominated the event, as the third-place winner finished more than 10 points behind Martin and more than 15 points behind Phillips.

Denise Martin also made it to the smallbore finals and finished in eighth place. Phillips added a trip to the air rifle finals, where she finished seventh.

At the NCAA Championships March 14-15 in Murray, Ky., the Huskers finished fifth with a combined score of 4,660. West Virginia (4,705) successfully defended its 2013 NCAA title, while Alaska (4,677), Kentucky (4,675) and Memphis (4,669) finished just in front of the Big Red. Denise Martin highlighted the Husker performances at the NCAA Championships, taking third in the individual smallbore competition with a career-best 586 to put the finishing touches on an outstanding 2013-14 season for the Huskers.

The Nebraska Rifle Range is located in the lower level of the Military and Naval Sciences building. One of the finest training facilities in the nation, the Nebraska Rifle Range features 10 firing points with caswell shooting stalls and electronic targets.

Moveable target carriers, which are controlled at the firing line, allow targets to be placed at any distance up to a maximum firing distance of 50 feet. Permanent stops for the targets are located at 10 meters and at 50 feet for NCAA air rifle and smallbore competition.

The Husker rifle team is also able to utilize some of the finest all-sport facilities in the nation at Nebraska, including the Charles and Romona Myers Performance Center. The Myers Performance Center includes massive athletic training facilities for NU student-athletes to maximize their potential.

HOME OF CHAMPIONS Nebraska’s nationally renowned athletic programs enjoy some of the finest home facilities in the country. Nebraska is dedicated to providing its athletes topnotch game-day and practice atmospheres in every sport.

Nebraska annually hosts several Big Ten and NCAA Championship events, including soccer, volleyball, basketball, baseball, track and field, softball, golf, gymnastics, wrestling and swimming and diving.

ATHLETIC MEDICINE

Providing expert care to more than 600 Husker student-athletes, Nebraska features one of the most welltrained and highly skilled athletic medicine staffs in the country.

Under the guidance of Director of Athletic Medicine Dr. Lonnie Albers and Head Athletic Trainer and Physical Therapist Jerry Weber, the 2014-15 Nebraska athletic medicine staff consists of five doctors, 13 athletic trainers and six graduate assistant athletic trainers.

Nebraska’s team of orthopaedists is led by Chief of Staff Dr. Pat Clare, a nationally respected orthopaedic surgeon with more than 30 years of service to Husker athletics.

NUTRITION

Nebraska’s Sports nutritionist and registered dietitian Lindsey Remmers and nutritionist Ryan Reist work with all 24 of Nebraska’s sports by educating athletes on topics such as increasing lean body mass, losing body fat, staying hydrated, nutritional strategies for competition, maximizing recovery following workouts and supplement use. Athletes are given individualized nutrition plans that can be applied in Nebraska’s Performance Buffet at the Lewis Training Table, which was remodeled and expanded in 2010. In addition to utilizing the Lewis Training Table each day for lunch and dinner, student-athletes have access to fueling stations called The Landing, located in North Stadium and the Oasis, located in the Hendricks Training Complex. Both provide chocolate milk, shakes, bars, fruit, nuts, bagels, vitamins and Gatorade at any time before and after training to maximize performance gains and recovery.

ACADEMIC SUCCESS

University of Nebraska student-athletes produced another outstanding year in competition, in the classroom and in the community, continuing NU’s tradition of success in 2013-14. The Huskers increased their nation-leading total of all-time CoSIDA Academic All-Americans to 314 with a Big Ten-best seven academic All-Americans across all sports, while also claiming a Big Ten-leading five NCAA Postgraduate Scholarships in 2013-14.

Nebraska’s seven CoSIDA Academic All-Americans ranked among the highest totals in the nation across all divisions. The Huskers maintained their lead of 76 all-time CoSIDA Academic All-Americans over national No. 2 Notre Dame. The only school in the nation with 300 academic All-Americans, Nebraska is one of just three schools across all divisions with 200 or more, joining Notre Dame and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). NU leads the nation in CoSIDA Academic All-Americans since 2000 with 124, extending its nation-leading streak to 43 consecutive years with at least one academic All-American.

The Huskers also increased their nation-leading total of NCAA Top Ten Award winners to 17, as former women’s tennis All-American Mary Weatherholt was honored during the 2013-14 academic year. Nebraska also ranks among the nation’s best in the total of NCAA Postgraduate Scholarship winners, including five in 2013-14. Spencer Long (Football), Eric Schryver (Men’s Gymnastics), Emily Wong (Women’s Gymnastics), Sunny Russell (Rifle) and Anne Martin (Track & Field) all claimed the prestigious national awards.

A total of 675 awards were issued for the Nebraska Scholar-Athlete Fall (354) and Spring (321) Honor Roll, recognizing Husker student-athletes who produced a 3.0 GPA or better during a semester. Among that group, Huskers produced 87 perfect 4.0 GPA semesters. A total of 62 Nebraska student-athletes also were honored as Big Ten Distinguished Scholars for posting 3.7 grade-point averages or better and All Sports as of August 2014 lettering in their respective sports in 2013-14.

Nebraska’s CoSIDA Academic AllAmerica success continues to set the standard for the approximately 1,400 member institutions. The Husker football team leads all individual sport programs in the nation with 107 all-time CoSIDA Academic All-America awards, including 2013 first-team honoree Spencer Long and second-team selections Jake Long and C.J. Zimmerer.

Spencer Long added a prestigious National Football Foundation Postgraduate Scholarship worth $18,000, along with prestigious NCAA Postgraduate ($7,500) and Big Ten Wayne Duke Postgraduate ($10,000) scholarships before being chosen in the third round of the 2014 NFL Draft. Zimmerer added a spot on the AFCA Good Works Team and claimed Nebraska’s Big Ten Sportsmanship Award for his extensive community involvement.

The Nebraska men’s and women’s track and field program added three academic AllAmericans, including first-teamers Levi Gipson and Anne Martin, along with secondteam pick Cody Rush. Martin and John Welk swept the NCAA Elite 89 awards for the Huskers as the student-athletes with the top grade-point averages competing at the NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Championships for the second consecutive season.

Nebraska’s 38 combined CoSIDA Academic All-America honors since 2002 for the men’s and women’s track and field program lead the nation.

Emily Wong, an 11-time All-American in competition for the Nebraska women’s gymnastics team, added a first-team CoSIDA Academic All-America award to cap one of the greatest all-around careers for a student-athlete in Husker history. A two-time academic All-American, Wong was named the winner of the 2014 AAI Award presented to the nation's top collegiate gymnast. The Honda Award finalist and Big Ten Gymnast of the Year earned prestigious NCAA Postgraduate ($7,500) and Big Ten Wayne Duke Postgraduate ($10,000) scholarships. Her achievements earned her Nebraska’s Female Student-Athlete-of-the-Year Award and the Big Ten Medal of Honor. Men’s track and field student-athlete Seth Wiedel was Nebraska’s Male Student-Athlete of the Year and Big Ten Medal of Honor winner.

THE NEBRASKA ACADEMIC EXPERIENCE

From the day student-athletes decide the University of Nebraska is the right place to be, the athletic academic counseling unit provides personal and academic support to ensure that student-athletes will get the most out of their years as Huskers. Featuring one of the most innovative and comprehensive academic support systems in the country, Nebraska is dedicated to helping its student-athletes become outstanding leaders in their chosen fields. The academic support team is comprised of 13 full-time staff members and a tutorial staff of approximately 75 tutors addressing all subject areas.

Academic Counseling

Eight academic counselors and three assistant academic counselors are in place to monitor daily academic progress, receive consistent course feedback, assist with the advising/registration process and monitor continuing eligibility and progress toward graduation. Essentially, academic counselors assist student-athletes in navigating the University of Nebraska system.

Tutorial Support

A tremendous resource for all academic abilities, unlimited tutorial support is available from day one up to college graduation. Subject and mentor tutors help provide academic support and study strategies to be successful. Supplemental Instruction, a sub-component of the tutorial program, provides targeted group review sessions to help ease the transition to college academics while improving study strategies and building academic self-esteem.

Study Hall

Nebraska’s study hall program is housed in the D.J. Sokol Enrichment Center within the Dick and Peg Herman Family Student Life Complex. Student-athletes attend a supervised, flex-time study hall that features day, evening and weekend hours. Each student-athlete is required to complete a specific number of study hours each week as determined by their academic counselor and/or coach. In addition, weekly study hall reports are provided to the coaching staff. Additional performance-based or tutor-based study hall may also be determined by the academic counselor.

Mentoring

Many student-athletes meet with a mentor on a weekly basis to assist in making a smooth transition from high school to college. Mentors collect syllabi, gather and report academic progress information and teach academic success strategies.

Educational Assessments

Assessments are administered upon the request of the student-athlete, academic counselor, or coach to determine student strengths and areas for improvement.

Results allow academic counselors to develop a personalized academic support program and to determine if more in-depth testing is warranted. When additional assessments are necessary, referrals are made to a consulting psychologist who conducts the assessments. If it is determined that a student-athlete has a learning disability, appropriate accommodations are made through the Office of Services for Students with Disabilities.

Student-Athlete Orientation

The academic staff coordinates New Student-Athlete Orientation to help newcomers adjust to the multiple demands of being a college student-athlete.

Presentations are made by academic counselors, compliance officials, NU faculty and administrators, business/community professionals and student-athletes.

Personal Counseling

Student-athletes will find a supportive and caring environment at Nebraska.

Transitional issues, stress management, time management, academic focus and problem resolution are all addressed in a proactive manner throughout the year. If necessary, counseling referrals are also made to designated practitioners.

Computer Resources

Student-athletes enjoy a new state-of-the art computer lab and technology center with 58 computers and professional supervision. Laptops are also available during team travel. Student-athletes have the benefit of ongoing education and assistance from a full-time computer technician.

NEBRASKA LIFE SKILLS - SERVING LEADERS The Nebraska Life Skills program is committed to providing proactive education, resources and support throughout college and beyond, best preparing Husker student-athletes for life after sports. Services foster transition, retention, responsible decision-making, leadership, volunteerism and career development.

Nebraska has long been considered a pioneer in life skills support and programming. In 1998, Nebraska was one of five Division I schools nationally to win the prestigious Program of Excellence Award recognizing a strong commitment to total person development. In 2005, Keith Zimmer, Associate A.D. for Life Skills, was the recipient of the Dr. Gene Hooks Award recognizing him as the top life skills administrator in the country.

Life Skills Components

Proactive Education Husker Life Seminar – All incoming student-athletes complete a 13-week fall semester seminar addressing a variety of life skills topics ranging from leadership to money to relationships and study skills. Team Workshops – Campus and community experts facilitate team-specific life skills education workshops.

Student-Athlete Assemblies – Meetings featuring remarks from nationally recognized life skills trainers.

Personalized Support/Individual Sessions Resume Development – Each student-athlete is assigned a Life Skills counselor who assists in the creation of a personalized resume for the student-athlete.

Periodic follow-up meetings will take place through graduation to ensure a wellrounded college experience and marketability to realize career goals.

Community Outreach Nebraska student-athletes combine to impact over 100,000 people statewide on an annual basis. Team Service Requirement – Each team participates in a minimum of two service projects per year. School Outreach – Individuals participate in numerous school outreach campaigns in both classroom and assembly settings.

Hospital Visits – Huskers are frequent hospital visitors providing cheer and encouragement to a variety of patients. Miscellaneous Outreach – Outreach requests are received daily from the entire state requesting involvement from Husker student-athletes. Mentoring Programs – Typically requires one hour of service per week serving as a youth mentor.

Leadership/Citizenship Life Skills promotes leadership development and provides recognition opportunities for extraordinary citizenship. Student-Athlete Advisory Committee – Elected team representatives from each of the 24 sports serve as the “voice” of the entire student-athlete population discussing student-athlete welfare, legislation and service events. HERO Leadership Award – Individual recognition to Huskers who have consistently gone above and beyond serving as an exemplary role-model. Heart and Soul Award – Presented annually to the top senior studentathlete leaders for extraordinary service throughout their college careers. Tom Osborne Citizenship Team – Individual recognition to Huskers across all sports who have completed at least six service projects during the academic year. Nebraska Football Uplifting Athletes - A recognized student organization initiated in 2012, Nebraska football players and UNL student leaders collaborate to raise funds and awareness for those with rare diseases. Nebraska running back Rex Burkhead was named the 2012 recipient of the National Rare Disease Champion Award and C.J. Zimmerer won the award in 2014. Life Skills Award of Excellence – Recognizes team services and leadership with the top men’s and women’s programs being honored on an annual basis.

NEBRASKA RIFLE

Nebraska rifle continues to build a tradition that rivals the Huskers’ most successful programs. Entering its 16th season as a varsity sport at Nebraska, the Husker rifle team has produced eight top-six team finishes at the NCAA Championships, including an NCAA runner-up performance at the 2006 NCAA Championships.

In 2005, the Huskers fired their way to a thirdplace showing at the NCAA Championships, before adding a fifth-place team finish in 2007.

Nebraska made it five consecutive top-five NCAA finishes by taking fourth in 2008.

In the 2012-13 and 2013-14 seasons, NU made back-to-back appearances at the NCAA Championships, finishing in seventh place (2013) and in fifth place (2014).
