That 80s Show 1
L E T T E R F R O M T H E P R E S I D E N T A N D A R T I S T I C D I R E C TO R Dear Friends, Welcome back to the 80’s! Tonight is flashback to a decade that celebrated big hair, shoulder pads, and the start of MTV! Sit back and listen to the sounds of the hits heard on shows like Solid Gold, American Bandstand and America’s Top 40 while a bevy of characters from favorite television shows and videos make cameos across the stage. Chicago Gay Men’s Chorus established in 1983 Like so many LGBT and HIV/Aids support organizations, CGMC got its start in the early 80’s. Since that time many positive changes have occurred in the areas of equality, acceptance and support for our community, but the fight is not over. While CGMC is poised to celebrate our 30th Anniversary, we see our mission to Entertain, Inspire, Motivate and Comfort as important as it was in 1983. To continue our reach within the community we chose to perform this show in new venues: Francis Parker Auditorium and Elmhurst College. Both institutions promote equality and acceptance among their student populations and fully support programs and scholarships for LGBT students and their supporters. We applaud both of these schools and the pride they instill in their students. A Special Kind of Pride… Denver bound! Speaking of pride, please join us on June 16th when history will be made as CGMC takes the stage with Windy City Gay Chorus and Aria for a Pride celebration concert at Senn High School. This joint concert is in anticipation of all three organizations attending GALA Festival in Denver Colorado July 7-11, 2012. The festival is 4.5 days long, with 45 ensembles, 130 choirs, 200 performances and over 5000 delegates. Come to the concert and experience what all three groups will be performing in Denver! A Dedication… to the Past and the Future We dedicate this concert to two people who helped shape the history of CGMC: Merry Mary and Arnold ‘Arnie’ Cuarenta. Merry Mary passed away on December 30, 2011. For nearly 30 years, she attended almost every CGMC Sunday rehearsal, staffing the money table, volunteering in other capacities, and being a friend and supporter of everyone in the organization. Mary was a critical part of Chicago’s LGBT history and certainly of CGMC’s. Arnie Cuarenta joined the chorus in 2001 and as member served on the chorus’ board of directors and on the membership committee for two years respectively. He has been the General Manager for the past six years. He and his partner are moving to Florida to explore the next chapter in their lives together and we wish them both the very best. Arnie’s enthusiasm and love for CGMC and life in general will be missed greatly. His dedication to this organization serves as a highstandard for all of us to strive for.

ABOUT THE CHORUS With more than 150 singing members backed by a small army of volunteers, the CGMC family covers a diverse cross-section of the Chicago metropolitan area. Under the visionary guidance and inspired direction of Artistic Director, Patrick Sinozich, CGMC delivers a distinctive brand of entertainment that keeps our audience coming back again and again. Our members log thousands of hours annually to accomplish an ambitious schedule of performances, fund-raisers and charitable appearances. We Entertain CGMC delivers a unique entertainment experience found nowhere else in the city. We produce professional-quality shows that combine the best elements of musical theater, cabaret and traditional choral performance. But only CGMC can add that special “twist of gaiety” that can make each show fun, moving and memorable. We Inspire Whether we’re representing the community while singing the national anthem at Wrigley Field or we’re providing rarely-seen GLBT-friendly entertainment in smaller cities downstate, CGMC serves as ambassadors and provides a positive image to countless thousands every year. We Motivate Sometimes the message to take action can be delivered more effectively through song than through speech. That’s why CGMC has been heard regularly in the dome of the state Capitol (supporting GLBT rights and domestic partner benefits) and at major fundraising events throughout the city (often supporting AIDS-related organizations). We Comfort CGMC is not only an integral part of the community, but we are a family. When asked to help, CGMC heeds the call. We’ve sung at at the Auditorium Theater honoring the victims of Sept. 11. We sing at smaller memorial services honoring local community leaders... and sometimes our own members. We’re humbled to realize that CGMC’s presence can bring comfort and healing to those around us. For more information, to join our mailing list or to find out how you can support the Chicago Gay Men’s Chorus, visit cgmc.org. This program is partially supported by a grant from the Illinois Arts Council, a state agency. CGMC is supported in part by a City Arts 2 grant from the Chicago Department of Cultural Affairs.
CGMC is a proud member of GALA Choruses, the Gay and Lesbian Association of Choruses, an international organization. CGMC is a proud member of the League of Chicago Theatres

James has also appeared as a featured cabaret pianist at Gentry, Spin, Davenport’s, the 410 Club and the Casino. Janneke Waal-Fowers, Choreographer After her parents sent her to ballet class at four years old to help her get rid of her flat feet, Janneke eventually earned a bachelors degree in Dance Education. She worked as a dance teacher and choreographer for theatre, television and fashion shows both in her native country of the Netherlands and in Bozeman, MT where she also was a founding member of Montana Theatre Works, a community theatre company. After receiving her masters degree in Art & Culture from the Erasmus University in Rotterdam, she moved to Chicago with her husband nine years ago and changed careers to become the Heritage Interpreter at Mayslake Peabody Estate. She would like to thank CGMC for giving her the opportunity te re-visit her first love, choreography, despite her flat feet. Margaret Nelson, Lighting Designer Margaret L. Nelson, USA 829, has received two Ruth Page Dance Achievement Awards for lighting design and stage management in the dance community and a Joseph Jefferson Citation for lighting design at the Organic Theatre. More than that, she has been the lighting designer and occasional stage manager for CGMC for many years. Margaret’s current projects include acting as production stage manager and lighting designer for Goat Island Performance Project’s national and international tours. More projects include working with assorted Chicago dance companies as they create works for Ravinia, the Athenaeum, the Dance Center of Columbia College and a Park District swimming pool; the 2005 Dance Chicago, 2005 Dance For Life and Chicago Human Rhythm Project; and lighting Dance Africa at the Auditorium Theater for WTTW. Theater projects have included lighting and road managing the national tours of Big River, Pump Boys and Dinettes and This Is America.

Ron Wirth, Sound Designer Ron Wirth was raised a sharecroppers son on a small farm in the midwest, where he ate fresh veggies from the garden and was forced to drive a stick shift (on a tractor) at age 8. His grade school band director needed trumpet players and Ron’s parents dutifully volunteered their firstborn. In the 7th grade he was diagnosed with a serious disorder and has been wearing glasses ever since. At the age of 16 he had to pay his father 34 cents a gallon for the gasoline that would take him to the city for hooliganism, trumpet lessons, concerts and culture shock, that would change his life forever. Now he just does audio, and still drives a stick. Derek Van Tassel, Production Assistant Derek is thrilled to be a part of CGMC! Since graduating Columbia in 2009 with a BA in Theatre, Derek has been keeping busy working as a director/stage manager with Strawdog, Appetite Theatre, Lincoln Square Theatre, Nothing without a Company, Point of Contention, American Demigods, Quixotic Comedy, and Chicago Fringefest. Some of his favorite credits include A Funny Thing Happened on the way to the Forum, Chicago, Grease, Dames at Sea, The Apocolypse: Now in 3D, On Golden Pond, Fatima & Maama, Erratica, Vanishing Points, and Ike Holter’s FuturePast. “Of course it is happening inside your head, Harry, but why on earth should that mean it is not real?” Arnie Cuarenta, General Manager Sadly That 80’s Show marks Arnie’s final show with the Chicago Gay Men’s Chorus. He joined the chorus as a singer in 2001 and became the General Manager in 2006. He always joked that the chorus hired him so they could pay him not to sing. Arnie and his partner Steve are moving to Fort Lauderdale shortly after this performance. We wish them well in their endeavors.

THE L ARRY E. BURKE MEMORIAL SCHOL ARSHIP FUND In addition to their many talents and their endless enthusiasm, Chicago Gay Men’s Chorus members are also required to contribute financially to the success of the organization – through annual dues and miscellaneous costs associated with weekend rehearsal retreats and traveling performances. Fortunately, CGMC members who are not able to meet these financial obligations can earn scholarships through the memorial fund left by Larry Burke, a longtime member and dear friend of the chorus who died in February 2005. Through Larry’s generosity, every CGMC member has the opportunity to enjoy all the benefits and experiences the Chicago Gay Men’s Chorus has to offer.
