F R O M T H E D I R E C TO R ... J E N U P H O F F G R A Y I am so very happy to finally be able to say these words: “Welcome Back to the Playhouse!” What a journey we have been on over the past 18 months since we last performed here for a live audience. We are so grateful to every one of you that came along for the ride and kept us company as we figured out how to provide a full season of theater without actually being IN the theater. Nevertheless, here we are now, ready to celebrate our “Lucky 13th” season with you. I hope that you will enjoy this production of an unsung gem of a play by legendary American playwright Adrienne Kennedy, written with her son, Adam P. Kennedy. This autobiographical piece of story theater will put you right alongside Adrienne as she recounts her adventures in London in the 1960s, when she experienced close-up the music, the celebrities, and the excitement of that time. For those already familiar with the career of this remarkable artist, this is a rare chance to see this particular piece. And for those encountering Adrienne Kennedy for the first time, I hope you’ll be inspired to learn more about her work and her impact on American culture. We’ve provided lots of ways for you to dig deeper, through the program note from our dramaturg Khalid Long, to an extensive lobby display about the play’s context, to a three-day symposium of online discussions with experts on themes related to Kennedy and this play. You can learn more about all these opportunities on our website. Thank you for being here. We’re so thrilled to be back.

F R O M T H E B OA R D O F D I R E C TO R S .... R O Z A N A N D E R S O N What a year and a half we’ve traveled through… and NEVERTHELESS… here we are, together for Forward Theater Company’s 13th season! As difficult as it’s been not to experience live, professional theater in a shared physical space, Forward not only survived, but thrived. We can be proud of all we’ve accomplished. Thanks to our top-notch staff, Advisory Company, and Board of Directors – and because of our generous donors and audience members, we honored all contracts with artists, fulfilling a key part of our mission to create and sustain a home base for Wisconsin theater professionals and audiences. Not only did we present four mainstage shows and a monologue festival as scheduled, but each production grew creatively, as we adapted to a world swirling with change and ever-expanding technology. We helped lead the Madison-area arts community and, indeed, our reach expanded regionally and nationally, in developing policy and best practices, as well as our audiences, no longer only local. Forward Theater also responded to the national reckoning with systemic inequity by expanding our work to become actively Anti-Racist. To learn more, please check our website for information on our mission, values, and EDI and Anti-Racism commitments. The importance of art in our lives, as self-expression and sharing what it is to be human, has never been more clear. Join us for another season of exciting, engaging, and challenging theater!

FROM THE DIR ECTOR…BARON KELLY What do John Lennon and Adrienne Kennedy have in common, one born in Cleveland, Ohio, raised in Harlem, New York, and the other born in Liverpool, England, who matured in London? Kennedy and Lennon shared many things in common: they both loved fantasy, they had creativity, and they liked to play with words emanating from their dreams and imagination. Both of them used poetry to manifest their discordance with the separate worlds in which they lived. Kennedy’s plays and Lennon’s books share distortion of the real world, breaking logic and modifying language to express a new form of conceiving the world. Lennon wrote a book, A Spaniard in the Works (1965), which involves nonsensical stories and drawings similar to the style of his previous book, In His Own Write (1964). In his book, Lennon broke language to adapt it to his imagination. Well, for Ms. Kennedy, sometimes dreams grow into nightmares to end up as artistic pieces. In her work, she has always written to denounce injustice including the also cowritten (with her son Adam) Sleep Deprivation Chamber concerning Adam’s victimization in a violent racial incident involving the police. Ms. Kennedy has written brilliant plays including Funnyhouse of a Negro (1964), The Owl Answers (1965), and A Movie Star Has to Star in Black and White (1976). These plays are just ringing the doorbell when it comes to learning about what’s in the Kennedy House. Mom, How Did You Meet The Beatles? is an episode of a deceitful power play that Adrienne Kennedy encountered with Laurence Olivier and Kenneth Tynan, power brokers who ruled London’s National Theatre in the 1960s. Her desire to be accepted by the famous people she encountered in London made her marginalize herself as an artist and a person. Mom is a sincere play based on herself, her life experiences, her anecdotes, and the defense of female artistic writing. FROM THE DR A M ATURG…KHALID Y. LONG, PH D In Search of Fame and Fortune: Adrienne Kennedy and Adam Kennedy’s Mom, How Did You Meet The Beatles? Adrienne Kennedy’s career as a playwright stretches over five decades. She wrote her first play, Funnyhouse of a Negro, in 1964, which won her an Obie Award for Distinguished Play. Kennedy wrote her most recent play, He Brought Her Back in a Box, in 2018 as a world premiere for Theatre for a New Audience at Polonsky Shakespeare Center in Brooklyn. In between these bookend plays, Kennedy has written a body of work that defies conventionality and easy categorization. Furthermore, she has taught at several academic institutions, including Yale University, Stanford University, Brown University, Harvard University, Princeton University, New York University, and the University of California at Berkeley. And she has won significant awards, including a Guggenheim Award, a Rockefeller Foundation Grant, the Anisfield-Wolf Book Award for Lifetime Achievement, the PEN/Laura Pels International Foundation for Theater Award, the Lila Wallace Reader’s Digest Award, the American Book Award for 1990, the American Academy of Arts and Letters Award for Literature, among others. Kennedy was inducted into the Theater Hall of Fame in 2018, and, as recently as August 2021, Kennedy was named the recipient of the Dramatists Guild of America’s Lifetime Achievement Award. FROM THE DR A M ATURG…KHALID Y. LONG, PH D
c o n t.
Without question, Kennedy’s long career has established her as one of the most important figures of American theatre. “While the dramaturgy of surreal-expressionistpoetic theatre has placed Kennedy within a theatrical avant-garde in America,” according to Paul Bryant-Jackson and Lois M. Overbeck, “her subjects profoundly challenge the problematic of race, culture, gender, and class.” As such, her audiences witness the devastating and alienating effects of colonialism, racism, and sexism. Even more, Kennedy’s plays are snippets of her life interspersed within her dramas. Since the premiere of Kennedy’s first play, Funnyhouse of a Negro, which positioned her as a pioneer of the Black Arts Movement of the 1960s and 70s, critics have noted that her works are semi-autobiographical. But as theatre critic Hilton Als notes, “But, as usual in Kennedy’s plays, the autobiographical strain is not direct.” Als’ comment is valid for Kennedy’s oeuvre until we get to Mom, How Did You Meet The Beatles? To the casual eye and ear, Mom, How Did You Meet The Beatles? is a memory play (some scholars would consider it a documentary drama) that details Kennedy’s experiences in London in the 1960s after accepting what she perceived to be an invitation to develop a play based on Beatles member John Lennon’s book, In His Own Write. Throughout the play, Kennedy, in an interview style, is asked several questions by her son, Adam, in which she is propelled to reflect on a period of her life where she consecutively encounters actress Diana Sands, actors Victor Spinetti and James Earl Jones, writer James Baldwin, socialite Ricki Huston, theatre royalty Laurence Olivier and, of course, The Beatles. A closer look, however, reveals how Kennedy’s narrative follows in the tradition of Black women writers, to quote scholar Joanne Braxton, who use literature by way of the “African American oral tradition of spiritual narrative and bearing witness” to “define their experiences,” and recall “a coming to consciousness of self in a world that does not treasure, nurture, or protect black women.” In this vein, the Mother and Son discussion presented in the play offers a glimpse into the pre-celebrity-playwright era in which Adrienne Kennedy would soon traverse. For instance, audiences will come to know that Kennedy and her husband, Joseph, split not long after having two children together; they learn of her seemingly close relationship with her mother; and her fascination with Olivier. While audiences will come to know Adrienne Kennedy a bit more, they may even perhaps come to empathize with her as she illustrates a moment in her life where she was pretty vulnerable (especially economically), and like so many aspiring artists, was in search of fame and fortune. G O I N G F O R WA R D – A C O N V E R S AT I O N We invite you to consider the topics below and discuss them with your fellow audience members. We also hope you will join the cast at a talkback after each performance, as audience and artists meet to discuss these and any other issues brought to light by today’s show. And please keep the conversation going – on the drive home, at work, with friends, or by sharing your thoughts on our Facebook page. Let’s start the conversation: • Mom, How Did You Meet The Beatles? is written as a memoir play. Rather than have actors portraying all of the characters, we are instead presented with the character of Adrienne Kennedy recounting this period of her life. Why do you think Adrienne Kennedy and Adam Kennedy chose this format for the play? Unlike some memoir plays, which are strictly monologues, Mom, How Did You Meet The Beatles? includes the character of Adam, Adrienne Kennedy’s son. How do you feel his presence alters the play? • It is safe to say that Adrienne Kennedy’s London experience would have been very different if she had been a white male. And while her erasure from the project that took her overseas isn’t ignored, the play chooses to focus on the joys that Adrienne and Adam experienced in London, rather than the artistic betrayal and the reasons behind it. Why do you think the playwrights made that choice? And in what ways is that subtext still woven into the story? To learn even more about the play, playwrights, and Forward Theater’s production, please consider watching our pre-show talk, which is available for viewing from our website.
