C A R R I E R O N D E AU M E M O R I A L S C H O L A R S H I P Once again this year, we are most pleased to present the $1,500 Carrie Rondeau Memorial Concerto Scholarship. This award goes to the winner of the Senior Symphony Concerto Competition, involving many of the finest young musicians in southeastern Wisconsin. Carrie Rondeau, a talented violinist and longtime member of MFY/MYSO, died in 1993, at age 24, after a courageous battle with leukemia. As a result of generous contributions from her family and friends, the Carrie Rondeau Memorial Concerto Scholarship Fund was established to memorialize Carrie and to provide support for the musical excellence she so admired and exemplified. Her generous family and friends have perpetuated this memorial. BIOGR APHIES Elaine Hyke is a freshman at Muskego High School. Her composition, Fly, is her first venture into composing for a wind ensemble. Music has long been a highlight in Elaine’s life. In addition to playing French horn with the MYSO Junior Wind Ensemble, her high school Wind Ensemble, pit orchestra, and marching band, she also plays piano with the school’s jazz band. Elaine enjoys horseback riding/jumping, tennis, hanging out with friends,

and devoting time to learning other instruments such as the flute. She would like to thank the people and players who are involved with the MYSO Junior Wind Ensemble for giving her this amazing opportunity–and for enduring the ups and downs of the creative process. A special thank you goes to both Mr. Simmons and Professor Dvorak for their expertise and, of course, a heartfelt thank you goes to composing coach Adam Murphy for his indispensible guidance. And a shout out to music teachers Ally Schweitzer and Elaine Lehman, and school band directors Mr. Beckman and Ms. Climer.
B I O G R A P H I E S ( c o n t .) As a musician Isaac Young is probably most associated with versatility. You may see him on piano one day, playing violin the next, on a different occasion French horn, or perhaps even in front conducting. This is because Isaac simply cannot be satisfied with just one area. To him the real joy and experience of music is when all collaborate, working to create something together. Composition and conducting are his favorite ways to express this joy. “The End of an Era” is a very personal work for him. The interpretation of the piece is different for every person. He challenges the orchestra to “find a way to connect to the work, and bring something personal from their experiences.” For Isaac the composition is symbolic of his life today. The work is an “homage to the dear friends, family, and instructors who have walked with me all through life, and as the work progresses, so does the instrumentation, conveying the changes and additions life gives us as we continue our journeys.” The piece is his last “hurrah” of his high school life as he steps into the door of college and adulthood. He feels incredibly blessed to have the opportunity to conduct the work. Isaac is also the executive director and conductor of the Waukesha Area Chamber Orchestra, a non-profit organization founded in 2008. The organization is determined to assist those in need, as well as offer true, intense but enjoyable musical experiences for all, free of charge, regardless of musical background. He is an avid member of his school choir, wind ensemble, jazz ensemble, and orchestra and is active at DaySpring Baptist Church, particularly in the music ministry. Isaac especially enjoys working as a mentor to underclassmen at his school, preparing and supporting them for their journeys ahead in any way he can. However, there is nothing
more important to Isaac than serving his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, and for Isaac music is only one way of fulfilling this desire. Hannah White, 12, is currently in sixth grade and has been playing the violin for nearly six years. A second year merit scholarship recipient and member of the Music Institute of Chicago’s (MIC) Academy Program for gifted pre-college musicians, she currently studies with MIC artist faculty member Hye-Sun Lee and has previously studied with Karla Siegler and Pamela Simmons. Hannah has performed in master classes with Christos Galieas and Ilana Setapen. For three years Hannah was a member of Waukesha Area Youth Orchestra (WAYO) under the direction of Timothy Cobb. Hannah has been a member of MYSO’s String Orchestra and Philharmonia, and currently plays in both the Senior Symphony and Chamber Orchestra; she has also participated in the MYSO Chamber Ensemble program for three years. In addition, she has previously performed with the Eastbrook Symphony and for two years has been a member of MIC’s Academy Chamber Program and Academy Strings, under the direction of James Setapen. Hannah was awarded a gold plaque from Kettle Moraine Music Teachers Association for achieving highest ratings three consecutive years. She received second place of the Lake Country Baroque Music Competition and was a winner of the Milwaukee Symphony Bach Double Competition performing with the Milwaukee Symphony Orchestra. Hannah was winner of the 2010 MYSO String Orchestra Concerto Competition and performed as featured soloist with the orchestra. She won second place in the Primary Division Spring Concerts 3
B I O G R A P H I E S ( c o n t .) of the Society of American Musicians Music Competition and received second place in the Junior Division. Hannah won third prize in the Junior Division of the Frank Stehlik Memorial Scholarship Contest and honorable mention in the Senior Division. As winner of the DePaul Concerto Competition, Hannah performed with the Oistrakh Symphony Orchestra conducted by Mina Zikri. She took third place at the Chinese Fine Arts Society Music competition and earned honorable mention in the Junior Division of Madison Concerto Competition. Hannah was awarded first place in the Elementary Division and won first place in the Junior Division of the Sejong Cultural Society Music Competition. A two-time winner of the MIC Academy Strings Concerto Competition, she was soloist with the Academy Strings Orchestra. Hannah participated in the Midwest Young Artists and Walgreens National Concerto Competition and received first prize as category winner and was named overall winner.
Hannah has performed at Milwaukee and Chicago area corporations and businesses, weddings and other social engagements. She has volunteered her time teaching violin to young children and has performed at various senior residences and churches. Hannah performed at Mettawa Manor, home of television news anchor and host, Bill Kurtis, for the Lake Forest Symphony Orchestra Annual Gala. Hannah has performed for governors and delegates and has also been featured on Chicago’s WFMT 98.7 FM Introductions program, KBS broadcasts, and in various Chicagoa-area newspapers. Outside of music, Hannah enjoys reading her Bible, being home schooled with her two brothers, baking, biking, fishing, golfing, raising her egg-laying chickens and modeling. Hannah humbly gives all the glory to God for her ability to express herself through the violin.

BIOGR APHIES Shawn Head is a senior at Franklin High school, as well as a student at UWM, and a member of MYSO’s Senior Symphony and Chamber Orchestra. Shawn has been exposed to music since the age of two through his supportive parents who introduced classical music such as Brahms, Beethoven, Shostakovich and many others. Beginning the guitar at the age of thirteen and joining rock bands were the basis for his creativity and passion for composing. Over time, Shawn began to look at other styles of music such as jazz and classical music. He soon became bored with guitar and wanted to experiment with Viola. Starting Viola at the age of 15, Shawn quickly disciplined himself to the rigor of a classical musician to meet the criteria of many opportunities that awaited him in the classical world. Here he began to take his rock songs and arrange them for string orchestras and other ensembles. Soon after, Shawn’s school orchestra director T.J. Hull introduced composition techniques and other materials for him to generate music. Over the next year, Shawn would go through the biggest change in his life, from being a rock musician to being a classical string player and
composer. He became inspired by the music of Schoenberg, Hindemith, Bartok and especially, Shostakovich and Stravinsky. All of this while keeping up with the demand of a classical musician, putting in at several hours a day of practice, composing a piece every week, and most importantly finishing his schoolwork on time. Shawn has gone through his composing and viola career with Mr. Hull, Jon Monhardt of UW-Milwaukee, Mark Mantel, and Jenny Kozoroz who often plays in the viola section of the Milwaukee Symphony, and he continues to study with Dr. Monhardt and Mrs. Kozoroz. He continues to compose on a regular basis and enjoys teaching violin and viola to students ranging from age five to fifty-five. Shawn’s other interests are his daily visits to the special needs students at his high school. There he plays viola for them and assist the teachers so that the classroom is a healthy learning environment for all involved. Ultimately Shawn has found his passion in life and want to pursue a Ph.D. in both composition and viola. BIOGR APHIES Nova Terkhorn is a thirteen year old in seventh grade at West Allis Lincoln Intermediate School. She has been playing violin for eight years, starting with the Suzuki method in kindergarten at West Allis Horace Mann Elementary School and taught by Michael Britz. For the past three years she has taken private lessons from Juanita Groff. This is Nova’s second year in MYSO, but her first time participating in the John Downey Creation Project. Though she has created some “little” songs on her keyboard, this is the first time that she has composed— with the guidance of her coach Julie Brandenburg—a piece to be played by an orchestra. Nova presently plays violin in her school’s orchestra led by Kelly Schultz. She also has performed in the MYSO Chamber Ensemble Program in 2011 and 2012. Nova also enjoys cross-country running, swimming and playing basketball.
Fourteen- year-old flutist Max Lin is a freshman at New Berlin Eisenhower High School. He has been playing flute for five years and piccolo for one and a half years. Max studied flute with Jill Streator and has been studying with Judith Ormond of the Milwaukee Symphony Orchestra for the past two and half years. He currently performs with MYSO’s Chamber Flute Ensemble and Philharmonia. Max was the 2011 Flute Chorale Concerto Competition Winner, is the 2012 Chamber Flute Ensemble Concerto Competition Winner, and an Honorable Mention in 2012’s Philharmonia Concerto Competition. In 2011, he served as principal flute for both the National Band Association’s Wisconsin All-State Junior Band and Wisconsin School Music Association Middle Level State Honors Orchestra. This year, he competed for the first time in the Milwaukee Symphony Orchestra Young Artist Auditions and was named honorable mention for both flute and piccolo performances which resulted in the opportunity to play side-by-side Spring Concerts 23
B I O G R A P H I E S ( c o n t .) with the Milwaukee Symphony. In school, Max was invited to join the high school band in the eighth grade and has served as the principal flute ever since. In addition to his work on flute, he has studied piano for 7 years, currently with Tatiyana Smith. He has won numerous awards for his piano performances, including two-time winner of the Milwaukee Music Teachers’ Association Youth Concert Series and receiving honorable mention status in the Cardinal Stritch University Piano Festival and the Wisconsin Music Teachers’ Association Badger Keyboard Competition. In addition to his performing, Max has taken on composition as a new interest. He has been chosen twice as a John Downey Project Fellow and he has received an honorable mention in the Wisconsin School Music Association Student Composition Project. One of his composition pieces won him a scholarship to the Junior Composers Institute at the University of Minnesota. Samantha Carter has been studying the violin for seven years; she has studied with Linda Ulrich, JoAnn Haasler, and currently studies with Pamela Simmons. Samantha is a current member of MYSO’s Philharmonia and Chamber Orchestra, WAYO’s Sinfonietta and Chamber Orchestra, a string quartet, and she also plays the oboe for the Whitewater Middle School Band. Samantha also enjoys mentoring for MYSO’s Progressions program and WAYO’s Philharmonic because it gives her a chance to share her knowledge while it provides the opportunity for personal growth. As a home schooled 8th grader and a busy musician, she has become accustomed to homework in the car. But when she has free time, she loves to read, do arts and crafts, photography, downhill skiing, swim24 Milwaukee Youth Symphony Orchestra
ming, camping, and a variety of other outdoor activities, and, of course, spending time with friends and beloved cats, Sir Isaac (Newton), The (Zen) Master, and Mahatma (Gandhi). Torrin Hallett has played the horn for 3 years and is a member of MYSO’s Philharmonia, UWM Youth Wind Ensemble, and the Wind Symphony at Oconomowoc High School where he is a junior and drum major under the direction of Michael R. Krofta. Torrin plays the trumpet in his school’s jazz band and enjoys playing the guitar and piano, as well. He began composing two and a half years ago and has since written several solos, duets, and works for large and small ensembles. In January, one of his pieces, a horn duet entitled “Marathon” was published by Alliance Publications, Inc. “Rise and Rise Again” is his first piece for symphony orchestra. The title references the piece’s high and low points and how it always rises up in a glorious fashion after each downturn. He would like to thank his collaborator, Frances Way, and coach, Adam Murphy, for their advice, inspiration, and ideas in creating the work as well as J.J. Endres for teaching him the incredibly confusing logic behind string bowings, and the string players who reviewed the parts. Frances Way is a sophomore at Oconomowoc High School. She has been playing trombone for five years and is taught privately by Megumi Kanda. In the past year she has become interested in composition, and as a team, Torrin Hallett and Frances composed “Rise and Rise Again.’. She is very excited to
B I O G R A P H I E S ( c o n t .) hear her first composed piece performed and cannot wait to start composing more pieces. She wants to thank Adam Murphy for helping them with the details of their piece and also Torrin, for the opportunity to work with him. Other than composition, she was
recently accepted to the Interlochen Arts Academy Trombone Institute which she will attend this summer. Her other interests include metal arts and jewelry, ceramics, sailing, cooking and traveling.

J O H N D OW N E Y C R E AT I O N P R OJ E C T MYSO is proud to collaborate with one of America’s premier new music ensembles, Present Music, as we bring twelve world premiere student compositions to performance this year. In memory of Dr. John Downey, both a visionary composer and an inspiring man, MYSO musicians are invited to have the opportunity to meet with professionals who guide them from the early structural and conceptual issues of composition through the final printing and rehearsals of their work. The John Downey Creation Project provides MYSO ensembles, as well as MYSO composers, important and exciting experience by undertaking the many challenges of new music. John Downey served as Director of Music Theory and Composition for Music For Youth/MYSO for more than 40 years and was a very important and beloved member of the MYSO family until his passing in 2004. Dr. Downey, a Distinguished Professor of Music at UW-Milwaukee, was an internationally renowned composer who collaborated with the great artists of his time and, among many honors, was knighted by the French government. Among many pieces performed by musicians all over the world, he wrote a number of works for Music For Youth/ MYSO, as his MYSO students were an essential and joyous part of his career. Professor Downey played a critically important role in the lives of thousands of students, several of whom have become noted composers. He was absolutely central to our organization and mission for many years. The 2012 John Downey Fellows and the MYSO ensemble for which they are composing are as follows: Shawn Head, Chamber Orchestra; Isaac Young, Senior Symphony; Sabrina Raber, Sinfonia; Amanda Wahl, Brass Ensemble as part of MYSO’s Chamber Ensembles Program; Max Lin, Woodwind Ensemble as part of MYSO’s Chamber Ensembles Program; Elaine Hyke, Junior Wind Ensemble; Torrin Hallett and Frances Way, Philharmonia; Nova Terkhorn, String Orchestra Central and West. We are confident that Dr. Downey would be thrilled by the enthusiasm, creativity and the seriousness of purpose displayed by these young MYSO composers, whom he would lovingly have called “my geniuses.”

M I LWAU K E E YO U T H S Y M P H O N Y O R C H E S T R A Celebrating 56 years of excellence, Milwaukee Youth Symphony Orchestra (MYSO) has been instrumental in changing the lives of young people since 1956 when it began as a single orchestra of 30 musicians. Since its early beginnings, it has grown to become, by several measures, the largest and most extensive youth orchestra program in the country. Serving more than 900 talented young musicians from as many as 14 counties in southeastern Wisconsin and northern Illinois, this award-winning program offers the highest level of training in ensemble musicianship to motivated young people from diverse backgrounds. Students with varied levels of instrumental skills benefit from the broad range of MYSO experiences, all created to foster talent, build character and enhance lives by nurturing an enduring love of music. In 2005, MYSO moved into the acclaimed Milwaukee Youth Arts Center, a collaborative initiative of MYSO and First Stage Children’s Theater. Home, also, to dance and vocal music training programs, this 56,000 sq. ft. state of the art facility in Milwaukee’s historic Schlitz Park is quickly becoming a national model for arts education, with a mission of using the arts to enhance all children’s lives. Several innovative MYSO offerings, prompted and made possible by the move, have received notable awards and recognition—locally, regionally and nationally—particularly for MYSO’s ambitious efforts in outreach and community partnerships. Building on the rich past of its first half-century, MYSO combines many respected, established programs with exciting new ventures. Founded with assistance from the Junior League and Rotary Club of Milwaukee, MYSO has expanded its offerings to include: 38 Milwaukee Youth Symphony Orchestra
M I LWAU K E E YO U T H S Y M P H O N Y O R C H E S T R A ( c o n t .) Senior Symphony—MYSO’s flagship ensemble, a full symphony orchestra made up of very advanced players, generally in the upper grades of high school. It has long been recognized as one of the nation’s top youth music ensembles, hailed for artistic excellence both nationally and internationally. Philharmonia—A full symphony orchestra which provides musicians with experience in preparing a great variety of shorter works from the romantic to post-modern periods; comprised generally of younger high school musicians. Chamber Orchestra—A subset of the Senior Symphony, this very advanced group is organized to play standard chamber orchestra repertoire—music not generally played by the large symphony orchestras. Sinfonia/Junior Symphony Orchestra—A large, intermediate-level string orchestra whose members are generally in middle school and early high school. In the spring, selected wind players from the Junior Wind Ensemble augment this group to form the Junior Symphony Orchestra, playing full orchestra literature. Junior Wind Ensemble—An intermediate-level wind ensemble comprised of woodwind, brass and percussion players in grades 6-9. String Orchestra—A string training program, which rehearses as four smaller groups at regional sites around the area (Central, North, South and West). These groups combine to perform as two large string orchestras. Chamber Flute Ensemble—An advanced, multi-part flute choir that works on cutting edge, advanced flute ensemble repertoire and more sophisticated arrangements of orchestral repertoire. Flute Chorale—A multi-part flute choir that plays standard flute ensemble repertoire and arrangements of orchestral repertoire. Members are generally in middle school or early high school. Progressions—An intensive, introductory string training program consisting of lessons and orchestra experience; directed toward City of Milwaukee populations which have previously been under-represented in MYSO. Jazz Studies—A constellation of classes and small combo opportunities for middle and high school students, with a special focus on City of Milwaukee students. Calypso—A steel band in the Trinidadian tradition, originally formed in partnership with Milwaukee Public Schools. White Rock Elementary initiative—A beginning string instrument training program at White Rock Elementary School, a predominantly Latino public school in downtown Waukesha. MYSO’s extensive schedule of rehearsals, performances, outreach initiatives and enrichment opportunities also includes: a large chamber music program, music theory and composition classes, “side-by-side” rehearsals which combine less Spring Concerts 39
M I LWAU K E E YO U T H S Y M P H O N Y O R C H E S T R A ( c o n t .) experienced players with those who are more advanced, free master classes, workshops, competitions, recitals and much more. MYSO has partnered with numerous other organizations to better serve both students and community. Examples of these collaborations, in addition to the facility initiative with First Stage Children’s Theater, include “side-by-side” reading workshops with the Milwaukee Symphony Orchestra, an annual concert with the Milwaukee Children’s Choir, Jazz Collab, a joint venture with the Wisconsin Conservatory of Music, the John Downey Creation Project, a “new music” composition initiative with Present Music, a talent development partnership with the Boys & Girls Clubs, ongoing programs in cooperation with Milwaukee Public Schools and periodic artistic initiatives with such groups as Danceworks, Master Singers and Milwaukee Choristers. MYSO’s talented music faculty members blend creativity and pedagogical expertise with their great breadth of musical knowledge. They come from all corners of the musical world and include UW-Milwaukee faculty, Milwaukee Symphony Orchestra players, seasoned and recognized school educators and other noted area musicians. MYSO’s experienced, capable administrative staff has doubled organization’s enrollment over the past fifteen years while successfully completing the fundraising for—and building of—a major new community facility. The entire MYSO family is united in its dedication not only to training future performers and music educators but especially to instilling in many thousands of young people a much deeper appreciation of the arts— fine music in particular. While participation in most MYSO ensembles is tuition-based, we have a longstanding commitment to making our programs available to all qualified musicians; scholarship assistance is available upon application, and no student shall be denied an opportunity to participate because of financial need. A major community initiative to raise $2 million in scholarship funds (“Fran’s Fund”) is underway, with plans to complete the effort by June 2012. MYSO has been a member of the United Performing Arts Fund since UPAF’s founding in 1969. We are grateful to UPAF and to the thousands of other generous donors who make our programs possible! This concert and MYSO are supported in part by generous grants from UPAF, CAMPAC and Wisconsin Arts Board with funds from the State of Wisconsin. MYSO gratefully acknowledges this important support as well as the critically important donations from so many individuals, foundations and corporations.
