SPRING AWAKENING Book and Lyrics by Steven Sater Music by Duncan Sheik Based on the play by Frank Wedekind s t e v e n s at e r ( B o o k a n d l y r i c s ) In plays include the long-running Carbondale Dreams, Perfect for You, Doll (Rosenthal Prize, Cincinnati Playhouse), Umbrage (Steppenwolf New Play Prize), A Footnote to the Iliad (New York Stage and Film, The Miniature Theatre of Chester), Asylum (Naked Angels), Murder at the Gates (commissioned by Eye of the Storm), In Search of Lost Wings (Sanford Meisner) and a reconceived version of Shakespeare’s The Tempest, with music by Laurie Anderson, which played London’s Lyric Hammersmith and toured internationally. In addition to Spring Awakening, Sater has collaborated with alt-rocker Duncan Sheik on the NY premiere of Umbrage (HERE), Nero: Another Golden Rome (The Magic Theatre), and The Nightingale (commissioned by Martin McCallum, work-shopped both at the O’Neill Musical Theatre Conference and La Jolla Playhouse, forthcoming in La Jolla’s 2007 season). He is the lyricist for Sheik’s critically-acclaimed album Phantom Moon (Nonesuch), and together the two wrote the songs for Michael Mayer’s feature film A Home at the End of the World (Warner Classics) as well as the independent feature Brother’s Shadow. Steven is co-creator and Executive Producer, with Paul Reiser, of recent pilots for both NBC and Sony/FX, and has developed two projects for HBO, and a pilot for Showtime (with Reiser). He is also at work, with Jessie Nelson, on a feature film for New Line. Nelson and together they have recently completed a rewrite of the Warner Bros animated feature, C Horse. In addition, Steven continues to work as a lyricist with a variety of composers in the pop/rock world. Duncan Sheik (Music) In addition to writing the music for Spring Awakening, which received a critically acclaimed Lincoln Center American Songbook Concert staging, Grammy award nominated singer–songwriter Duncan Sheik collaborated with Playwright Steven Sater on The Nightingale, a musical based on the Hans Christian Andersen classic which premiered during the 26th annual O’Neill Music Theater Conference at the Eugene O’Neill Theater Center. Sheik has composed original music for the Public Theatre’s Shakespeare in the Park production of Twelfth Night and for The Golden Rooms of Nero, which recently debuted at Cornell University and opened at the Magic Theater in San Francisco earlier this year. His self-titled debut album, which was an enormous popular and critical success, introduced the hit singles “Barely Breathing” and “She Runs Away,” and spent 30 weeks on the Billboard 200. Other albums include “Humming,” “Daylight,” “Phantom Moon” with lyrics by Steven Sater and his latest, “White Limousine”, which was released in January of 2006. Film Soundtracks: Great Expectations, The Saint, Teaching Mrs. Tingle, Three to Tango, What a Girl Wants, Transamerica and A Body Goes Down. Sheik recently composed and produced the original score for the feature film A Home at the End of the World, directed by Michael Mayer and starring Colin Farrell. Spring Awakening

She’d also like to thank the friends and family of the Pine Forest. And, also, her sweetheart, Slim 765.2 miles got nothing on us. Emily Moritz (Assistant to the Designer) is a sophomore Technical Production & Design major with minors in English, Art, and Communication. always supporting her, as well as the faculty, especially Herschel and Maureen Kruger, for giving her this opportunity. Steven Brown (Assistant to the Designer) is a junior Technical Theater Production and Design Major with a Studio Art Minor. Steven is excited, inspired, and proud to continue his work on the plays of Carthage Theater. His latest work includes Sound Design for TARTUFFE and set construction and stage

Steven would like to thank the theater faculty, his biological family, fraternity family, and friends for all of their support. He would especially like to thank Briana Bell for all of the adventures experienced and those yet to come.
d i r e c to r ’ s n o t e s The original play entitled Spring Awakening A Children’s Tragedy was written by Frank Wedekind in the winter of 1890-1891 and completed on Easter in the spring of 1891. The play was censored for almost fifteen years and Wedekind’s success and fame as a playwright did not arrive until 1906. Early productions across Germany and Europe were cut to suppress the sexually explicit scenes and action. Unfortunately Wedekind died in 1918 at the age of 54 due to complications from abdominal surgery. In 2006 Spring Awakening the musical opened on Broadway – it won eight Tony awards. Theatre critics applauded it as groundbreaking and authentic, but Wedekind loyalists shot it down as offensive and trite. Regardless of the critics and loyalists point of view the show you see tonight has been carefully worked to follow the provocative play and ideas that Wedekind presented in 1891. I believe the responsibility of anyone directing this show is to take all of the characters and issues seriously. In the 122 years since the completion of the play the world has changed, but many of the issues faced by teens in 2013 have not. Suicide, sexual exploration, sexual identity, child abuse, and abortion have not gone away. Nor has the stigma of talking about or addressing any of these issues. In many cities across the country productions of this musical are met with censorship and/or controversy. What are we afraid of? I think that is possibly the depth of what Wedekind wanted to explore. Why do we allow this to happen to our children? Why do we shelter them from the knowledge and the tools that can help them through the years of adolescence through adulthood? How have the institutions of the family, church, and education failed our young people? It is my belief that when you produce this show you should take on the responsibility and pledge Wedekind made to educate and protect children. In the lobby you will find literature regarding resources and programs especially related to the themes and action of the play. You can also make a donation to support the various causes. The laws of this world are for children. -Frank Wedekind

The aims of this national theater education program are to identify and promote quality in college-level theater production. To this end, each production entered is eligible for a response by a regional KCACTF representative, and selected students and faculty are invited to participate in KCACTF programs involving scholarships, internships, grants and awards for actors, directors, dramaturgs, playwrights, designers, stage managers and critics at both the regional and national levels. Productions entered on the Participating level are eligible for inclusion at the KCACTF regional festival and can also be considered for invitation to the KCACTF national festival at the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts in Washington, DC in the spring of 2011. Last year more than 1,300 productions were entered in the KCACTF involving more than 200,000 students nationwide. By entering this production, our theater department is sharing in the KCACTF goals to recognize, reward, and celebrate the exemplary work produced in college and university theaters across the nation.
