D I R E C TO R ’ S N O T E S As You Like It presents the view of two worlds through the eyes of individuals from both those worlds. Duke Senior is usurped by his brother Frederick and flees to the Forest of Arden with many of his Lords. His daughter, Rosalind, is later forced to flee, accompanied by her cousin Celia, to that same forest to find sanctuary. What they expect and what they find are the key. Each world has its rules and restrictions and yet they are each necessary. Each carries responsibilities yet seek time for entertainment. The Duke says “sweet are the uses of adversity”. In the modern vernacular it’s “when given lemons make lemonade”. Touchstone tells Corin he’s damned because he’s never been in court and Corin, the shepherd, reminds Touchstone, a court fool, that “those that are good manners at the court are as ridiculous in the country as the behavior of the country is most mockable at the court.” Two worlds. Two views. We hope you enjoy our As You Like It and that upon leaving the world of our play, you find your Forest of Arden.
