Actually, I fell in love with it after seeing a production in Chicago over twenty years ago, and have wanted to work on it ever since. Last year I came across a new translation by English playwright Chris Hannan, and applied for the rights to produce the US premiere of his version right here at Carthage. Alexandr Galin wrote the play in 1982, but for obvious reasons it was not staged in Russia until after the demise of Communism. The world has changed a lot since the 1980 Olympics that form the backdrop of the play, but as recent events have proven, the past isn’t gone; in fact, it’s not even the past. True, the Soviet system collapsed under its own weight during the late 1980’s, heralding the end of one of the most repressive regimes on earth. But clearly, there is still much to be done, not only in Russia but in other countries all over the globe, to further advance the cause of human freedom. Wherever there is power without accountability and wherever authority is held in more regard than human dignity, we rely on people like Mr. Galin to show us that no matter what else we may suffer, our dreams can never be taken from us. CAST BIOGR APHIES Grace Brunette (Valentina): Grace is a senior and this is her sixth production here at Carthage. You may have seen her as Diana in NEXT TO NORMAL, Desiree in A LITTLE NIGHT MUSIC (both Music Theatre Workshops), or Drowsy in THE DROWSY CHAPERONE, but tonight you will see her as a totalitarian fire officer in STARS IN THE MORNING SKY. Now for the shout outs: Martin, you are the most honest and motivating director I have ever worked with, thank you for forcing us to smell the truth! To everyone in the cast, thank you for being so fabulous and creating such a trusting environment. And finally to everyone who helped me run lines and supported me, a whole hearted thanks. 2
