ARTIST NOTES “I am Maria, Maria tango, slum Maria, Maria night, Maria fatal passion, Maria love of Buenos Aires, that’s me.” We are thrilled to welcome you to the world of Maria de Buenos Aires. It is night. Love is important. There is death, but also rebirth. There are devils, angels and tango. To say that we have been seduced by this piece is an understatement. We are head-over-heels in love. Piazzolla referred to Maria as his “little opera,” but to us, it is an expansive, sprawling work. A piece that will unite singers, dancers and orchestra in a meditation on the life of a city and a woman who lives, dances and dies there. Premiering in 1968, Maria points the way toward some of Piazzolla’s most successful work. The score pulsates with angular tangos, dreamy waltzes and unforgettable melodies as it ushers us through the various levels of Maria’s existence. The poetry of the libretto is written in the Spanish slang of the Buenos Aires demimonde. Composed by the legendary tango lyricist Horacio Ferrer, the text paints a surreal picture of Maria’s bohemian world, where dreams come unbuttoned, goblins recite poetry and a miracle could happen any moment. Working together on such a massive collaboration between multiple organizations has been inspiring and joyful. Finally sharing our work with you is immensely satisfying. Please join us and immerse yourself. Become surrounded by and seduced by Maria.
