F R O M T H E E X E C U T I V E D I R E C TO R Dear Danceworks Friends, As we come out of the season of lights, decorations and gifts, I can’t help but reflect on 2011 and all that we received at Danceworks—new dancers, board members, studio classes, students, donors, audience and space! It only reminds us that people everywhere need and deserve to have joy, health and creativity in their lives. Among our gifts are the bright new talents of Liz Zastrow and Sarah Gonsiorowski joining us for DPC’s 15th Anniversary Season; the shining presence of Betsy Hoylman of Northwestern Mutual and Kilby Williamson of Rexnord on our Board; the many lit up faces of new dance fitness students who didn’t think they could dance, along with the young and old celebrating the bonds of their new friendships formed in Danceworks’ Intergenerational Multi-Arts Project (IMAP); and the thousands of students glowing with pride in their dress-up clothes as they come marching out arm in arm and heads held high, prepared to dance at the Bradley Center in the Mad Hot Ballroom and Tap (MHBT) Competition. With all these remarkable students you’d think Danceworks would start a youth company…we did. Drawing from the beaming abilities of students in MHBT and our studio classes, Danceworks Youth Performance Company (DYPC) was launched in September, directed by the exuberant Faith Mitchell. Watching people of all ages and abilities discover the freedom that is expressed in dance through the reality of discipline is the shining light of Danceworks. I would be remiss not to mention the light bulb that turned on in Liz Tesch’s head when she came up with the bright idea to have schools sell Alterra coffee for an MHBT fundraiser. Paul Miller, Lincoln Fowler and Ward Fowler answered the call and brilliantly created a “Mad Hot and Bold” Blend, which we complemented with some fun red mugs. Our MHBT schools are busy selling coffee and mugs to help pay for the program, which is helping us bring new schools on and sustain the schools already in the program. You can buy coffee too—order forms are at our front desk. All proceeds support Danceworks MHBT, which is filling in where physical education and arts programming have been cut from the school day. While you’re at it, you can check out the dancers in the lobby windows. From outside, you can see how each is uniquely designed by a Company member to capture the dancing spirit. Inside, you can pledge a gift and sign your name to help sponsor the dancer of your choice. Then, check out our new apparel. Along with teaching many of our popular dance fitness classes, Kim JohnsonRockafellow has been busy selecting the line of clothes that make you look good while you’re taking one. Finally, where would I be without the radiance of Danceworks’ committed board, staff, dancers, faculty, volunteers and all of you? F R O M T H E A R T I S T I C D I R E C TO R We all know the history of sequels—most don’t quite meet up to the originals. A few examples of this point: Dumb and Dumberer, Dirty Dancing: Havana Nights, Friday the 13th Part VIII: Jason Takes Manhattan. The Empire Strikes Back is a rare exception in an overwhelming case for resisting the urge to do sequels. So why, you might ask, would I, as the artistic director of DPC, put the company members in the potentially perilous and highly scrutinized position of doing a show called The Sequel!? Two years ago, when we did our first fun, crowd-pleasing dance concert based on the movie genre, Lights, DPC…ACTION!, it seemed every rehearsal ended with comments like, “If we ever do another movie show, we should do…” We couldn’t fit all the ideas we had into one concert! So here we are with The Sequel! Once again, this show is based on the movie genre, but we have bent and morphed the confines of each genre to work inside a contemporary dance aesthetic. The human body, and dance in particular, has the potential to communicate humor, passion, compassion, aggression, fear, fearlessness, joy and sorrow. As we dance our way through movie genres, be prepared for a wild ride of human emotion! As in the past, many choreographers of DPC have assumed the director’s chair for The Sequel! in an effort to provide an evening that is eclectic and surprising. We normally seek ways to create together, sometimes in tandem and other times colliding. DPC is a group of individuals that works and plays well together and sometimes agrees to disagree. BIOGR APHIES Deborah Farris, Executive Director, has led Danceworks since 2002. During her tenure, the organization has experienced significant growth in both budget and programming, with annual revenue increasing from $300,000 to more than $1,000,000. During this exciting time, Danceworks received the UPAF Management Excellence Award in 2005, 2006 and 2011 and the Education/Outreach Award in 2006, 2007, 2009 and 2011. Prior to coming to Danceworks in 2002, Deborah worked with Milwaukee Ballet as Director of Education and Outreach and was on the Milwaukee Ballet School faculty. Before returning to Milwaukee in 1999, she was Assistant Director for Business and Finance of the North Carolina Botanical Garden at the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill, from 1995-1999, where within her tenure revenues increased more than 400%. Deborah has served on the Department of Dance and Theatre faculties of Tulane University, University of NC at Chapel Hill and UW-Milwaukee, where she is also currently an adjunct faculty member. As an Equity actress, singer and dancer, she has performed extensively throughout the United States, appearing Off and Off-Off Broadway as well as in regional theatre and dance companies. Originally from Milwaukee, she received her Bachelor of Fine Arts and Master’s Degrees from UWM. Deborah received the 2007 Business Journal Woman of Influence Award for Nonprofit Leadership in 2007. Dani Kuepper, Artistic Director, Danceworks Performance Company, sponsored by Tim and Sue Frautschi, joined DPC in 1998 and has since choreographed more than 20 dances for the company, as well as several evening length works. In addition to her commitment to DPC, Dani has done a wide variety of community work on Danceworks’ behalf over the past ten 6 Danceworks
years, including working extensively to develop the dance component of Danceworks’ Intergenerational MultiArts Project (IMAP). Dani received her BFA and MFA from UW-Milwaukee, where she has been an adjunct faculty member of the dance department since 1999. As an undergraduate at UWM, Dani performed the solo, “Mrs. Schultz,” at the national American College Dance Festival at the Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C. Dani has enjoyed collaborations with Florentine Opera Company, Present Music, First Stage Children’s Theater, Milwaukee Art Museum, Sweetwater Organics, Next Actors Summer Theatre for Youth and Milwaukee Youth Symphony Orchestra. Dani was honored in 2009 as a “Forty Under 40” recipient by the Business Journal of Milwaukee and also received the UWM Alumni Association Teaching Excellence Award for non-tenure track in instructors in 2010. Kelly Anderson is a resident choreographer and company member of DPC. Her second eveninglength work for DPC, Vaudeville, was performed in 2011. Her first, The Bra Project, premiered in 2009. Kelly was named one of the “Next Generation of Leaders” by Milwaukee Magazine. She choreographed Missed Connections (Gal Friday Films), co-created 26 with Milwaukee Opera Theatre and created The Mondo Lucha Dancers for Mondo Lucha at Turner Hall. She is a member of Gerald Casel Dance (NYC) and has performed with Bobbevy (Portland, Ore.), Your Mother Dances, Wild Space and Foothold. Melissa Anderson, a native of Milwaukee, has had the pleasure of being a DPC member since 2002. She has performed with companies as diverse as the Milwaukee Ballet, Ballet Teatro Municipal de San Juan, Southern Ballet Theatre (now the
B I O G R A P H I E S ( c o n t .) Orlando Ballet) and the Icelandic National Ballet. Melissa is frequently teaching and choreographing for the Chicago National Association of Dance Masters, Dance Masters of Wisconsin and Texas Association Teachers of Dance. She teaches ballet at UWM as a dance lecturer, as well as at the Nancy Dianne studio of Dance and Danceworks. Melissa has been featured in in Dance Teacher Magazine and in Dance Magazine’s Dancer online chat. Simon Eichinger, sponsored by Tim and Sue Frautschi, was born in Charlotte, North Carolina and moved to Milwaukee at a young age. After pursuing roles in many different arts fields he eventually received his BFA in Dance from UWMilwaukee. He has had the privilege of working with multiple choreographers, dancers, directors, playwrights, composers, musicians, painters and more. This is Simon’s second full season with DPC. Sarah Gonsiorowski recently received a BFA in Dance and a BA in English from the University of Iowa. She performed in works by George Balanchine, Jose Limon, Harrison McEldowney and Carl Flink. She spent three years as a member of Dancers In Company, performing throughout the Midwest and Puebla, Mexico. She has attended summer intensives with the Joffrey Midwest Workshop, Milwaukee Ballet, Joffrey Contemporary/Jazz program in New York and Hubbard Street Dance Chicago. She recently worked with Chicago Freelance Dance Organization as a performer and collaborator, and is enjoying her first season with DPC.
Kim JohnsonRockafellow, Associate Artistic Director, Danceworks Performance Company, began her dance training at Northern Michigan Dance Academy in her hometown of Kingsford, Mich. In 2000, she graduated with high honors from UW-Milwaukee with a BFA in dance. Upon graduation, Kim joined DPC and has served as associate artistic director since the 2009-10 season. She has created pieces for DPC as well as Milwaukee Ballet II. In addition to teaching a variety of classes, including ballet, modern, composition and Pilates, she has acted as Children’s Division coordinator, branch manager and helped create curriculum for the Milwaukee Ballet School. Kim is a dance lecturer at UWM, where she teaches modern technique and Body Sense. At Danceworks, she has enjoyed writing curriculum and growing the company’s dance fitness program. Holly Keskey, sponsored by Jody and Kambiz Pahlavan, has trained in all forms of dance since a young age. While obtaining her degree at UW-Milwaukee, Holly performed in UWM productions of West Side Story and HAIR. Holly graduated with her BFA in Dance in 2009 and was a recipient of the Dean’s Honors Award. Since then she has studied with the Bill T. Jones/Arnie Zane Co. and has performed with Kanye West. This is her third season with DPC. Liz Tesch graduated from UW-Milwaukee in 2004 with a BFA in Dance. A competitive gymnast for seven years, Liz turned to dance when she arrived at UWM in 2001. She has been a part of Danceworks since 2002 as an instructor and administrator and currently is the Danceworks 7

In that time she has had the pleasure of working with some of Milwaukee’s greatest artists and is looking forward to continuing her work in the theatre as well as in the community.

In Minneapolis, Moses appeared with Mathew Janczewski’s ARENAdances, Carl Flink’s Black Label Movement and the Minnesota Opera. Most recently, he worked as a guest performer with the Joe Goode Performance Group in San Francisco. Locally, Steven has been a part of DPC and is with Your Mother Dances. Stacy Pottinger, DPC Guest Artist, has performed professionally since 1996 throughout the country with the Christopher Watson Dance Company, Biodance, Kinetic Evolutions Dance Company and the City Children’s Nutcracker. She has also worked with internationally known artists Bill Evans and Juanita Suarez of the Latina Dance Project. Stacy received her MA in Dance Education at SUNY-Brockport and her MFA in Dance at UW-Milwaukee. She teaches at Danceworks and Carthage College, where she serves as Director of the Dance Minor within the Department of Theatre. Emily Spadafora, DPC Guest Artist, a Wausau native, danced for Allegro Dance Theatre, where she performed principal roles in story ballets alongside professionals from Milwaukee Ballet, Joffrey Ballet and American Ballet Theatre. She has attended intensive programs at Alonzo King Lines Ballet, Thodos Dance Chicago, Milwaukee Ballet, American Ballet Theatre and Dance New Amsterdam. Emily has also danced professionally with Missouri Contemporary Ballet.
Elyse Cohn, Director of Development and Marketing, joined Danceworks in May 2008. A Milwaukee native, Elyse has more than 20 years of experience in arts administration. She spent 13 years at First Stage Children’s Theater, working in both marketing and development. Most recently Elyse was the director of corporate & foundation giving at Milwaukee Repertory Theater. She has also worked for Wild Space Dance Company and Skylight Opera Theater. A dancer and performer throughout her childhood and early adulthood, Elyse received her B.A. in Drama from the University of Texas at Austin. Jan Kellogg, Lighting Designer and Stage Manager, has been designing lights and stage managing for DPC since 2003. Previous shows include Stone Soup, Lights, DPC…Action!, The Bra Project, Living Breathless and Classic Examples. She has also designed the lights for Wild Space Dance Company, Milwaukee Chamber Theatre, Milwaukee Opera Theatre, Renaissance Theaterworks, In Tandem Theatre, Bialystock and Bloom, Your Mother Dances, Catey Ott Dance Collective, Carroll College, Theater X, Foothold Dance/Performance, the UWM Dance Department and UCLA. Anthony Lyons, Technical Director, has been engaged with Danceworks in some fashion for 14 years. Anthony is also technical director for Renaissance Theater works and Wild Space Dance Company, in addition to Danceworks Performance Company. He has worked in various capacities for Skylight Opera Theatre, Milwaukee Chamber Theatre and Bialystock & Bloom (R.I.P.).
